Update from Ev

by | May 26, 2020 | Finance, Health Care | 368 comments

Editor’s Note: Last Autumn Glibertarians.com community member and writing contributor Ev was very seriously injured. While Ev has mentioned his ongoing struggles in comments, this is a stand-alone update on where things stand.

I have started a GoFundMe for my difficulties. I want to write a whole article about what’s been happening but it would require multiple installments and I’m afraid would touch on novel length. Here is what I wrote for the GoFundMe.

On September 22, 2019 I was hit by a car. I was in a coma for six weeks. I shattered my skull, broke four ribs and my shoulder blade. With pride, I started teaching again…before I really should have. That had to end.

I suffer from extreme auditory hallucinations, intense anxiety, and constant problems with my memory. My skull had to be put back together with titanium wiring.  Putting all of this together,  I struggle with figuring out what is real and what isn’t. I am still in rehab and am desperately trying my best to get back to work and look at the world with happiness and triumph.

I am asking for money to ease the struggle on my loved ones for taking care of me.  I want to conquer this and get back to being me, but I am only halfway through the process of recovery, according to my. I am also out of money and need to find ways to be able to pay for help and medication.

I am not a person who asks for help. But now I need to. There is no other option. Please donate whatever you can so I can try my best to recover and not be as useless as I am right now. I want to prove to everyone that I can get up, recover and prosper.

Thank you for your time and I hope you can help me during this incredibly strenuous era in my life. I no longer need surgery, so there isn’t a strict timeline on this assistance. In order to be solvent before I can get another job, I estimate that I will need about $2000. I will be honest and say that I don’t know how much I will need because I don’t know how long my brain will be this intransigent. Simply talking to me, especially by those who have gone through brain injuries, is another profound way of helping.

Thank you all. I am not afraid to look this angry bull in the eye as it snorts and starts kicking its feet. I need to do this. Your aid helps in any way that you can give it.

You turn our standard arguments against left and right back on us and poke our sensitive spots. That may sometimes seem like trolling, it may even sometimes be trolling, but it is entirely within the rules of civilized interaction, and even useful in pointing out areas that we may be rationalizing. That doesn’t deserve cat butts.

Mr. Axe Murderer is apparently trying to simulate a psychotic for his own amusement, which seems kind of a sociopathic entertainment,

Y’know, it’s a crying shame we blew our war load on shitholes in the Middle East.

While I generally abhor war as a matter of principle, going to war on behalf of Hong Kong would be a zillion time more moral and ethical than the nonsense we’ve engaged in for 70 years. Of course that won’t happen and Hong Kong is very quickly going to become just another ChiCom dump. I regret that I never went there before this started happening.

      • Q Continuum

And I echo a comment I heard somewhere else: “Let’s trade all of our Commies for all of Hong Kong’s freedom lovers. Everyone wins!”

    Twitter promoting mail-in ballots:

The social media giant targeted two tweets the president posted on Tuesday in which he contended without evidence that mail-in voting would lead to fraud and a “Rigged Election.”

Under the tweets, Twitter posted a link which read “Get the facts about mail-in ballots” and which took users to a notice calling the claims “unsubstantiated”, citing reporting by CNN, the Washington Post and other media.

“Trump falsely claimed that mail-in ballots would lead to ‘Rigged Election’,” the notice contended.

“However, fact-checkers say there is no evidence that mail-in ballots are linked to voter fraud.”

    https://www.france24.com/en/20200527-twitter-tags-trump-tweet-with-fact-check-warning-us-president-furious

    • Gustave Lytton

The president has long used Twitter as a platform to spread abuse, conspiracy theories, false information and insults to his 80 million followers.

For years before being elected in 2016, he built his political brand by supporting the “birther” lie that Barack Obama, America’s first black president, was not born in the United States and therefore was not eligible to be president.

And on Tuesday he ignited a storm with an attempted character assassination of MSNBC host Joe Scarborough by spreading the baseless rumor he murdered an aide.

      Impartial journalism there.

The thing that gets me is that Gender swapping is old as fuck. Brewster’s Million had a gender swap in the 1920s and a race swap in 1980s so it is not like this is some brand new idea…

      • UnCivilServant

The people making these movies can’t remember history.

They can’t even make good movies.

      • Winston

Either they forgot or they think they can use their old “make a straight white male character gay, black or a woman” shtick to virtue signaling for woke points in this current year and to rile up people online in order to get attention and to pressure critics to give them good reviews.

And turning straight characters gay is an old idea too though but until recently they couldn’t admit they were doing that. See Little Caesar…

      • CPRM

Are you saying pizza is gay?

      • Winston

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Caesar_(film)#Possible_LGBT_subtext

One interpretation of the film’s title character is that he is a repressed or closeted gay man.[3][4][5] The evidence cited includes Otero’s fawning admiration of Rico, Rico’s great affinity for Joe, and Rico’s complete lack of interest in romantic relationships with women, as well as his utter contempt for Joe’s interest in women.[4] When the film was released, author Burnett apparently drew the same conclusion about the screen version of the character. Having written Rico as explicitly heterosexual in his novel, Burnett wrote a letter of complaint to the film’s producers about the conversion of the character to gay in the screen adaptation.[4]

      • l0b0t

The writing has to be decent. Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House has been remade with Tom Hanks, and Ice Cube but the Cary Grant version is the one that is remembered.

      • Winston

The writing has to be decent.

The idea of “decent writing” these days take a shit script but have the main character not be a straight white man.

      • Mojeaux

The decent writing is on HBO.

      • l0b0t

And pretty much has been since they started producing their own material back in the ’80s/’90s. Barbarians At The Gate, The Incredible True Story Of The Texas Cheerleader Alleged Murdering Mom, and The Pentagon Wars are all beautiful examples of that.

      • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

I think the thing that pisses me off the most about modern scripts is the pacing. There’s not a chance to develop an emotional connection to the characters because the plot moves along so quickly that the movie is almost over by the time you get to know them.

      • UnCivilServant

Nuance and character development are tools of the patriarchy.

      • Winston

Ironic that the pace gets super fast as the films themselves get longer.

And the fast pace is to prevent the audience from getting bored and not to think about the plot holes too much. Oh and the Chinese need to watch these movies so don’t anything that can’t be easily translated like dialogue…

      • Rhywun

Recent seasons of Nu (Doctor) Who takes this to ridiculous extremes. One reason it’s practically unwatchable.

Haven’t seen it, but I have watched a lot of reviews by YouTube nerds about it. It sounds horrible, like new Star Trek and Star Wars, which I also haven’t seen.

The people in charge of these franchises are imbeciles. All they had to do was play along with the mythos (-es?) of the franchises, and nobody would’ve cared. Instead, they decided to take a few steaming dumps on them. Got Woke, Going Broke. And it couldn’t happen to anyone more deserving.

Get fucked, Jar Jar Abrams, get fucked Kathleen Kennedy, get fucked – anyone on CW, get fucked, get fucked. SugarFree could write way better stuff than you put out. CPRM could, too. The idea that some truths are universal is derided as hopelessly outdated. But storyline elements are supposed to be universally appealing regardless of ethnicity or gender or sexuality or whatever. They’ll harvest the Disney message but dispense with the Disney princess, at least if she’s white. Well, okay.

      • Winston

some truths are universal is derided as hopelessly outdated

Last year I visited companies in Shenzhen, right across from Hong Kong and was impressed by the incredible urban infrastructure developed there, including a high speed train that whisked me to Hong Kong in only 15 minutes, a journey that in the past would have taken an hour or more.

“Change” is the key word. It applies to Hong Kong as well as China, which is changing and progressing in many directions. We and the people of Hong Kong will need to accept this change and adjust to a new reality. And if we compare the China of the Cultural Revolution to the China of today we can’t help but be optimistic.

Tyranny is the New Normal. Accept it yokels…

I find it interesting that Roddenberry’s utopian communist vision and slobbering over LBJ is now loved among cynics and “reactionaries”. I mean that is the problem with the “permanent revolution” as everything old must be smashed.

Star Trek has always been trendy Hollywood Left Liberalism. In the 1960s it was slobbering over how great American was under LBJ who was going to end racism and poverty and bring about utopia. TNG was filled with 1980s PCness and the trend among the Hollywood Left was how Nixon and Reagan destroyed the utopia that LBJ promised us. Discovery and Picard are the Hollywood Left going Woke SJW and going “wait a minute… wasn’t LBJ a straight white man?”

    • Winston

Not to mention Star Trek was always supposed to be heavy-handed allegories about contemporary issues. Let That Be Your Last Battlefield, The Klingons, the Romulans, The Ferengi, The Neutral Zone episode, etc.

    • Winston

And has the writing really gotten worse or is that we agree with past Star Trek’s take or are issues too much in the past to really get upset about? Early TNG had some pretty explicit shots about the Cold War and capitalism but those are in the past so no one watching them today is upset about them…

      • Brochettaward

Guys like RLM are left leaning to begin with so I’m not sure which “reactionaries” you’re referencing. I’m not a Star Trek fan, but I think the writing for the new shows is supposed to be downright retarded. It isn’t the politics doing it in on its own as much as its just terrible writing. And with Picard they seemed to be actively looking to take an iconic character and denigrate him (sort of like Luke Skywalker).

      • Winston

        I’m not sure which “reactionaries”

Dave Cullen and the Fandom Menace and other anti-SJW types.

I think the writing for the new shows is supposed to be downright retarded. It isn’t the politics doing it in on its own as much as its just terrible writing.

Well I do agree with the writing of these new Star Trek shows is bad. I’m not a Trekkie or seen too many serialized cable shows but Discovery and Picard seem rather aimless and boring. Filled with so many concepts and characters but not doing anything interesting with them.

Some critics have wondered that a major problem with current serialized streaming shows is that the episodes themselves sometimes are no longer self-contained so they end up feeling rather pointless when watched on their own.

And with Picard they seemed to be actively looking to take an iconic character and denigrate him (sort of like Luke Skywalker).

Interesting that this was done with the full support of Stewart. I know plenty of people have question whether this is the work of SJWs denigrating straight white men or GenXers mad at the Baby Boomers for fucking up.

      • Brochettaward

A whole lot of the anti-SJW Youtubers are or at least were left leaning to begin with. These are guys who were anti-Bush the II growing up who probably don’t even have negative views of Obama. Probably fine with Bernie.

Star Trek had plenty of conservative fans in its prime. People who grew up with it. So its politics probably weren’t as heavy handed as you think. A lot of fiction has a left bent, especially sci-fi, but people, including on here, find a way to enjoy it despite that.

      • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

        Starship Troopers.

Love the book. Cannot stand the movie.

      • Chafed

        I thought I knew you.

      • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

C’mon, bruh! That movie is a blasphemy against a really good story. If it were Veerhoven’s original story, I might be a bit more lenient, all things considered. As it is, he and Neumeyer just wanted to shit on some supposed fascist writer.

I mean, it didn’t even come close to having the power armor!

      • CPRM

I think that is actually the case, there was an independantly written script that Verhoven liked, but lawyers thought it had too many similarities to Starship Troopers, so they bought the option for that and renamed the movie after the book. I don’t think Verhooven ever intended to make a Starship Troopers movie, but studio lawyers and studio interference morphed this other story into ‘Starship Troopers’.

While none of them are SJW’s or so political that it blinds them into fawning over diversity for diversity’s sake, they aren’t voting Republican. Jack is a straight up Democrat.

Rich was a Bernie guy. He supports a higher minimum wage and government healthcare.

Could be, he has the beetus. But I’ve never seen him espouse such, don’t know where you saw it.

      • Brochettaward

Are you talking about Jay’s remark?

Like I said – Jack and Rich talked about politics on their livestreams from time to time. Rich was a Bernie guy. Not speculation there.

Anyone I think the underlying problem with Nu Trek is that Star Trek is inherently based on an idealized Cold War Liberalism that no one, at least among the Hollywood Left, believes in anymore. Even the techno-optimism isn’t really in among the left these days. Can’t really update something you don’t really believe in anymore.

      • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

Ehhh….I don’t quite see the WH “pretending” on the numbers–at least, not with her statement (which is certainly spin). I think she’s saying something to the effect of, “these were the numbers put up by experts, which is what we had to go on”.

It’s like these press people are scared of a virus killing millions here in one fell swoop, and also being disappointed that it didn’t kill millions here in fell swoop. Like, it must have put a giant harsh on the narrative they’ve been building, so they have to pivot. Or, something.

His tenant, a sweet English woman in her 60’s who I remember from doing another job on her apartment last year, killed herself a couple days ago there. She lived alone and her suicide note mentioned that she couldn’t handle the loss of all of the daily things she did. The shutdownistas can fuck themselves. Yo Gustave – if you’re still around – you had a question about kettlebells?

    • Gustave Lytton

Yes! Was wondering if you were using Pavel and his StrongFirst material. I’ve been looking at medicine ball/kettlebell and ordered one of his starting books to give it a try.

      • Gustave Lytton

        Not any specific question (yet).

      • Tejicano

I look at his site for pointers – I’ve been doing kettlebells for about 10 years and have about a dozen exercises which I cycle through but there is always more to learn.

In the past I had been looking at CrossFit videos on kettlebells – but their focus kinda diverges from what I’m looking for and they sometimes use a different form for the same exercise. For instance, CrossFit uses the legs to lift the kettlebell straight up to the shoulder on a clean. The StrongFirst form is to start with the KB on the floor a few inches forward from the toes then rocks the KB back, swinging between the ankles before swinging it forward again and lifting to the shoulder. StrongFirst still uses the legs but swings the KB much more.

      • Gustave Lytton

Ah, i thought I remembered a mention about Russian training, but didn’t remember any further. First time getting into it so haven’t even gotten my feet wet.

      • Tejicano

Kettlebells came to the US (in their current method of use) primarily via Russia and Pavel was one of the first promoters, but I have also been following Russian/Soviet protocols for other free weights and pull-ups.

I guess this is as good a place as any to update on my pull-ups. When I first started the program I outlined here I was doing a dozen or so chin-ups but could only do 3 pull-ups in perfect form. So 3 was the max I started with on March 10. I followed the program for 8 weeks at which point – following the program) I was doing, or attempting to do, more pull-ups than I could do properly. So I took a few days off and tested myself and found I could do 6 reps in perfect form.

From there I started doing my max reps – 6 – in five sets through the day with at least an hour, generally longer, between sets. Once I did 5 days in a row I took one day off then started again with 7 reps. Another 5 day cycle, then a rest, then started again with 8 reps. This week I am starting with 5 sets of 9 reps daily. No injuries/pains like I used to always have so I am happy with this system.

      • Gustave Lytton

Thanks! From the little I’ve read so far about the Russian style, I like the approach.

Yu, I can’t be completely sure I fully understand (and, I’m NOT asking for you to do so), although I think I do. And, tbh, I’m somewhat dealing with a similar issue here. I can say that the resentment is real, and there’s little good in watching things spiral.

The only thing I can say is, she couldn’t give what she didn’t have. I didn’t know her, but, I doubt you would have tolerated it if she was simply selfish. You speak waaay too highly of her, for me think that “selfish” describes her very well.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

true, never selfish, Wendy didnt want this, her babies etc. but I told her if she didnt get healthy she wouldn’t see them, and here we are….
She was a great Gal, I’m crying now, but she Fucked up, and no way I could have fixed it

      • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

Oh, I hear ya! And, of course, that was something that you could never fix, and her still have her free will. So, I get (as much as I can) being angry about her choices.

If she had any kind of underlying (documented) emotional issues (depression, anxiety, etc), then I will re-iterate the, “she couldn’t give what she didn’t have” line.

But, that also means that you really should seek out some support groups. Or, something in the same vein–don’t let this mass of emotions just sit there w/o ‘doing something’.

    • salted earth

Yusef, are you looking for suggestions/advice, or do you just need someone to listen?

      • Yusef drives a Kia

yes, I’m lost, I have no idea what I’m doing, am supposed to do, or where to go, I’m lost and I tell anyone who might help,
        i don’t want to die,

      • salted earth

Yusef, I haven’t gone through what you are going through. I think everything you are feeling is normal (I know that isn’t a comfort). I don’t know if this is an option but you may try to see if there is a grief support group. It seems nights are (understandably) hard there may be AA meetings or something similar that run at night. I am not saying you need AA, but it would be a place to go with other people on short notice.

      • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

Yeah–this sounds like a “connections” issue; you need new human connections, Yusef. Support groups will probably do you, and the other attendees, a world of good.

If you’re leery about them, just think–you may end up helping someone else who’s struggling, which would, in turn, help you.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

How does being the leader of the Lost Boys sound? We are legion out here, and I seem to find them, not a great help, but I’m not lonely

      • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

Hey–as long as you don’t try to turn those of us that don’t want to be turned.

Agree to that, and no Death By Stereo.

Sorry to say, but I’m really pissed about my Wife’s decisions, she died, and I’m still here

    • Evan from Evansville

I’m sorry, Yusef. I’ve been depressed all day—which has never happened. Odd. I’m sorry for your loss and sadness. Feel free to email or chat with me at any time. mathews.evang at gmail.

At least you’re still here. That’s what made me feel better, after a considerable bit of time. As long as I’m up, there’s still more to learn and do.

I might be confusing your version of depression with mine, but we are coming from it at different directions. I mean no insincerity by my comments if you take them as such. Just the way my brain is operating now.

Stick with us, bud. You’ve always cheered me up. It’s the least I can offer you in return. It may help us both get through some profoundly shitty shit.

      Cheers, mate.

      ev

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Evan, that’s the nicest thing you could say, and i’m glad you are alive, Wendy was glad you survived as well, she saw your skull FWIW,
let’s stick together in the Glib World, get better little Brother!

    • CPRM

This might not be the most polite thing to say, but I’m not known for my etiquette in interpersonal relationships. You had a wife you loved who loved you. You have children and grandchildren who you can still have time with. Some of us haven’t yet had, and may never have such things. Cherish what was AND what can be.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        Agreed, it still hurts

      • CPRM

5 years on I still tear up thinking of my dad. I get it. That hole might always be there, but instead of letting the pain be a weakness, use it as a strength to make the life you have the most fulfilling.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

12 years for my parents, I miss my Mom most, next to Wendy, I hate even typing her name, I cry every time

  33. Yusef drives a Kia

It’s very tiring, trying to be normal, and act like everything is cool, it’s not cool, every day seems like a burden and I just want to sleep,of course I can’t

I’m not going to bore you guys with my BS anymore tonight, tomorrow will be better I suppose,
    Peace out!

    • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

If you’re feeling grounded and safe, then, Peace!

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Safe? Ozy got me a Big Gun, Grounded? OOOOK, anything but…

      • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

        YouknowwhatImean!

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Yes i do, i got some photos from my Cousin that creeped me out, but again need to get beyond this or it will kill me, I just dont care anymore, and that’s not good

      • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

Well, you do care about something–at least, enough to talk to us about it. Also, keep in mind: While you’re inhabiting your body, and living all of your seconds, day in and out, it hasn’t been such a long time since she passed. At least, not what I would think would be enough for you, based on things you’ve said.

Keep on keeping on, and fill your time up with the things you’ve been enjoying and that sustain you.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Yes Sir and thanks,I won’t quit or give up, i just miss her bad, and all the things I do, she would have done, with me, that hurts

  35. salted earth

Tejicano, if you were the one who recommended hanging, thank you. If not keep the thank you, I’m sure you deserve it for something 🙂

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Don’y hang yourself! Good God who’s instructions are you following?

      • CPRM

        David Carradine I assume.

      • salted earth

poorly worded…I think he recommended pull-ups as an exercise and suggested that even just “hanging” would help with shoulder problems. Too much poorly postured desk time has given me a pinch in my shoulder.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Hanging by your arms and relaxing the back muscles is a great way of fixing a back, sometimes

    • Tejicano

      Good to hear it helped.

Something I should have mentioned at the time – while hanging from the bar move your head back and forwards. Try to look at your feet, then slowly move back and try to look at the ceiling/sky. That movement gets a lot of shoulder and neck muscles stretched out.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        Thanks Tej, I’ll use that

      • Yusef drives a Kia

when you are thin like me, you have no muscles in your back for support, exercises help

      • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

when you are thin like me

Whoa! Gettin’ that moxie back enough to humble-brag!

      • Yusef drives a Kia

quite the opposite, i got Dentures and lost 25 lbs I cant get back, ever, i’m 125lbs now,too thin

      • Yusef drinks too much

I grind the Lumberjacks, I eat meat mostly, just thin, don’t know why

      • salted earth

Thanks, I’ll add those movements into my “hang.”

  36. Yusef drives a Kia

I may be thin but i have a ripping nice tan, and a tight if thin body, capable of River trips and fine Women stuff, so I’m OK, for now…

    • Digby recommends Crelm toothpaste

      I remember those days….

    • Festus

“Relative youth is it’s own aphrodisiac.” (to paraphrase the war criminal). I catch myself eyeing up girls that would never pass the test 30 years ago just because they are young…

  38. Festus

Not to take away from Evan’s poignant post but I just discovered that one of my newly purchased tires from five months ago is leaking. Damn, I hope it is under warranty. It still has the little flagellum running around the outer surface and the tread seems sound. Find out later today, I suppose…

  39. UnCivilServant

Is there any way to flatten out laminate flooring that has had its edges curl due to water spillage soaking in?

While I’ve fixed the source of the water (the hose draining the condensation from the portable AC), the water on the floor went unnoticed for long enough to damage the laminate.

    • Festus

Sorry, I don’t think so, Friend. We have contractors here that might gainsay me but once that stuff gets saturated to that extent it is probably toast and you’ll need to look at the sub-floor as well. You might go all 70’s on us and install some shag carpeting over the area but I sense somehow that this solution would not line up with your particular sensibilities. We lost a 90 gallon fish tank last winter and I feel your pain.

      • UnCivilServant

It wasn’t saturated, the edges have just let go and raised a smidge. “Started to curl” might have given an impression of more deformity than exists.

      • Festus

Maybe plane off the worst of the damage and try to find the right color to match? If it’s a small enough area no one will ever know except for you but I suspect that issue would keep us both up at night. Trying to be helpful!

  40. Gender Traitor

    Good morning, gentlemen!

From the department of Too Local, these decaying ruins have been sitting untouched for a full year since last Memorial Day’s tornado. This is just over a mile from my home, so I drive past it on a regular basis. Most locals reminisce about the rock concerts or hockey games they saw there, but the connection is a bit more personal to me – it was quite close to my high school (recently torn down and replaced with a new building,) so I learned to drive in the arena’s vast parking lot, and my graduation ceremony was held here. Boy, do I hope someone really does find a way to redevelop all that land into something productive, even if it isn’t on the “fashionable” side of the Dayton area.

  41. Sean

This early morning work thing is annoying.

    Bring back the shutdown.

    • Festus

No. The shutdown can go fuck itself in the ass. My poor little doge is getting skinny and I’m pretty damn sick of “projects”.

      • Sean

        Sarcasm. ?

I’m glad our company has resumed field operations. Even if still somewhat limited.

We’ll be back to full swing pretty soon.

      • Festus

Good to hear! My behavior has changed not a whit since the stupidity started.

  42. WTF

Best of luck, Evan, hope things will start looking up for you.
