Around the country, from Los Angeles to Seattle to Minneapolis to Philadelphia, city officials are mulling cuts that scale back the number of officers to shift money toward social services.
Economic woes from coronavirus lockdowns have left city budgets strapped for revenue and decision makers looking for places to trim, even as crime rates spike.
I have an idea. Take their car keys away, and make them walk a beat. Save money, force the fat bastards to exert themselves, even reduce carbon emissions. I say we give it a shot.
I say we give it a shot.
That could be taken two ways, both of which I approve of.
The getting out of their cars thing would be a good start, maybe they’d actually get to know the locals and it’d make them feel like a part of the community they’re policing. As it stands now I get the distinct impression that many of them view riding their jurisdictions as being equivalent to leaving the Baghdad Green Zone in 2007.
The “us v them” “thin blue line” bullshit needs to stop. There’s a part of me that thinks something useful may come from all of this, but I don’t dare give it much credence.
Yeah, don’t get your hopes up too high but there is an opportunity here.
So much all of this.
We all know why they went from walking the beat to riding in cars: revenue. You can’t give traffic tickets on foot.
They will say it was to increase response times and there may a kernel of truth in that, but that’s not the reason the beat disappeared.
“With crime increasing you cannot afford to dilute the deployment,” she said. “There’ll be cuts to overtime. Investigations will suffer. Response times will suffer — everything we ask the police to improve in terms of response time, in terms of clearing investigations and finding people responsible for various crimes.”
Geez, lady, come up for air and wipe that stuff off your chin.
I like how we’re supposed to pretend they don’t just mostly sit around eating donuts and occasionally screwing with a normy to write a ticket to cover their salary.
The rest of the hero first responders too. Last summer or the summer before, one of the city councillors up in Albany took a photo of a double-parked vehicle and pointed out on social media that people should avoid double parking because it’s dangerous. Unfortunately for her, said vehicle was an ambulance, and the response was pretty uniformly, “How dare you insult our sainted first responders!”
Crime has been decreasing for years. This year may be different, but it is still likely that crime will be lower than, say, 2005.

The four cops fired over the death of George Floyd stand a good chance of getting their jobs back if the police union appeals their dismissals, records show.
The Minneapolis Police Federation has a string of wins in getting terminations reversed by arbitrators — six out of eight since 2006, according to NBC News.
In a letter to members, the union’s president signaled that he was working to get the officers reinstated. All four ex-cops are also facing criminal charges, including murder.
“They were fired without due process,” wrote the president, Lt. Bob Kroll.
——-
For criminal justice experts, arbitration plays an outsized role in keeping officers accused of serious misconduct.
“I would say this is one of the most important accountability issues,” said Stephen Rushin, a Loyola University Chicago law professor who published a study on arbitration in 2018. “If you can’t remove bad officers, it’s going to be really hard to improve a police organization.”
The Minneapolis police union estimated that only a couple of cases a year go to arbitration and pointed out that research shows arbitrators uphold police firings at about the same rate — roughly 50% — as other types of public employees.
For Skoogman, those statistics drive home point that the system is flawed.
“Imagine running any business and you have to allow 50% of the people you’ve fired to come back in and work in your business,” he said. “It sends the completely wrong message that you can do whatever you want and you’re not going to get fired.”
How can you expect a cop to do his job with some civilian looking over his shoulder and second-guessing split second life-or-death decisions?
The idea that due process is required in order to fire a government employee, is completely insane.
Employee rights means the bad guys can’t get fired.
Feature, not bug.

I’m starting to think that, au contraire – the “calls for change” stem from decades of overspending and this is something they can get away with cutting & with minimal pushback.
Mayor Bill de Blasio has said he supports cutting money from the NYPD budget to shift toward youth and social services and is in closed-door negotiations with the City Council.
“I’m very hopeful that we’ll get to a positive outcome with the Council, a major shift of funds from the NYPD to youth services and other community needs,” de Blasio said on Friday.
“What this place needs is another slush fund for the promotion of the Democratic machine, and to grease the skids for my re-election campaign.”
“We must not let this crisis go to waste!”
Fortunately, this doesn’t exist.
The next mayor will be even worse.
Of that I have absolutely no doubt.

I’ve resisted the call so far because I’m cheap, but it’s time to start buying physical media.
Um… that’s kind of the point.
The main issue is that the stupid is starting to infect other countries. We had some feminist here complaining that a novel studies in high school had racism and violence against women. The protagonist was through the novel the bad guy. He was a brute and not presented in a sympathetic light. At all.
Y’all need to crush that attitude with extreme prejudice before it takes hold or you’ll get what we’ve gotten.
Art (mainstream corporate art at least) from here here on out until this attitude changes is going to be a bowl of unflavored instant oatmeal, you can consume it if you want but it’ll be as bland and as uninteresting and as safe as you can get.

Short answer: everything you like or are curious about.

Seeking a more equitable society, free of prejudice and race hate
“We don’t want white people here,” Newsome told The Post, still fired up as he walked near Yankee Stadium, gesturing at the majestic pre-war apartments on the Grand Concourse and a brilliant sunset.
“We don’t want white people coming in and raising our rents. You can’t be a supporter of black people if you come gentrify their neighborhoods. Stay the f–k out of our communities.”
——-
His vision for the Bronx is similarly militant — a black and brown sovereign nation with its own self-policing force.
“Black and brown guys that join the [NYPD]?” he said. “You can’t trust ‘em. They go blue as soon as they become cops and the blue line is ruled by white men. We don’t want them here telling our people what to do.”
——-
He doesn’t apologize for opinions that President Trump called in a tweet “Treason, Sedition, Insurrection” after hearing him on Fox News Wednesday. Newsome embraces the movement’s destructive side, saying it was hypocritical for his opponents to call him out for endorsing violence when the U.S. uses “blood and bullets” to get what it wants domestically and overseas.
“I was standing in front of Wells Fargo when it was burning in Minneapolis,” he said. “It was very liberating. F–k that. Burn man. They only listen when we destroy things. America doesn’t care about people; they care about property.”
To be sure, in principle we regret the need to seek justice through violent ends, but The Man just won’t give us what we want.

The amount of damage that Harry Potter has done to popular culture is beyond estimation. Probably the most destructive cultural force since The Beatles.

Oh hey but let’s not forget Rowling calling bullshit on the “men can be women” movement.
EvilSheldon: ‘The amount of damage that Harry Potter has done to popular culture is beyond estimation. Probably the most destructive cultural force since The Beatles.’
?
Yeah, that statement made no FN sense to me either.
He is saying that the generation raised on Harry Pottery is often childish with fantastical thinking, and don’t read past Harry Potter. Their literature education begins and ends with a 10yo magical rabblerouser and they never move past it.
“When I was a child, I spake as a child. When I became a man, I put away childish things.”
They grew up, but they never became adults.
Thanks, Mojeaux
I agree the people obsessed with Harry Potter seemed to never mature beyond that intellectually, but I can’t put my finger on why. I love things I loved as a child, I still read comic books, watch my Transformers G1 and Thundercats DVDs, buy myself fancier versions of toys I had or wanted as a child; but that hasn’t stifled my intellect in the same way these people seem stunted, so I don’t think it’s the pop culture to blame. I never read Harry Potter, maybe it was focused on people reading below their grade level? Like was it popular for HS kids to read it but was written at like a 5th grade reading level, giving them an inflated sense of achievement? I never heard of Harry Potter until I went to college and met people obsessed with it. So I guess that’s my generation, but it never was a thing around here.
They were reading Harry Potter and just…stopped reading anything else. The world was so immersive they felt they were living it. Shit, I still love books like that, but they stopped looking for them.
Then, about the time the last book came out, social media was ramping up and hard. Blog posts turned into 140-character tweets and sharing memes.
EVERY other form of entertainment suffered, especially in that cohort. Books, movies, TV (there wasn’t much of worth there anyway), sports (playing and watching), socializing IRL. Every traditional social outlet and/or hobby got left by the wayside for the quick dopamine hit.
With regard to Pinterest and now, to Instagram, actually DOING crafts or whatever other crafty interest people have has turned into performance art for others’ consumption, for we who pin things we will never do, never have, never build, never attain. Let’s take bullet journaling, for instance. The system works for some people, but it was meant to be minimalist. Now there are people who make “setting up” a bullet journal an art form and the rest of us just watch and wonder at it. Performance art.
I don’t have a problem with that, per se, but I create something. I am getting back into my cross stitching. I am also getting back into reading other people’s work.
The people who grew up on Harry Potter abandoned READING for a life online. Those of us who had the luxury of being sandwiched between those two worlds are older and busy. Fun fact: My biggest buyers are in the 55-65 age group by far.
That is very sad.
So Trump isn’t doing very hot in the polls right now, and my question for you is: is it because of the response to Coronavirus, the riot handling, or the economy stupid? Or is it because he’s Trump? Or that people forgot who Biden was?
A mix of the above?
It’s because Biden’s been mostly hiding in his basement.
Yes.
The polls don’t mean much at this point though.
A hostile media machine isn’t helping either
Because everyone with a functioning brain knows his rallies will kill thousands!.
Or that people forgot who Biden was?
Biden forgot who Biden was.
Because Biden is hiding, it is still the race between Trump vs. generic Democrat.
What kind of polls?

I’d shit all over it but it seems to have a good spirit and be for a good cause so I’ll let it go.
Oh my God, why? Why? Why would someone do this? Are there not enough shit movies to remake, that you have to ruin the perfect ones?
Everyone involved in this atrocity should assemble a toaster in their shower.
1. you cannot ruin a movie with another one
2. it is not an actual remake really
1.) Oh, but you can. Were you hibernating through the whole Star Wars thing?
2.) It doesn’t really need to be. See point #1.
-1 Ghostbusters
Luckily the new reboot for Ghostbusters is ignoring the existence of the 2016 movie, as we all should.
Were you hibernating through the whole Star Wars thing – Star Wars was not that great in the first place. I ignored the recent ones, the original was ok but overrated.
You shut that whore mouth! Next you will say Jaws was a bad movie too
My 10 year old self hates you right now.
I tend to agree with you about Star Wars. The originals were okay. Not great, but certainly watchable.
That said, I think my point still stands. Prior to the remakes, I could sit through Hope and Empire and enjoy them well enough. Now I can’t, because the originals remind me of the remakes. The entire canon has been spoiled for me.
That is a strange problem to have. I never had a remake affect my enjoyment of the original in any way. you’re weird.
Prior to the remakes, I could sit through
HopeStar Wars and Empire and enjoy them well enoughAhem, that is another thing the prequels ruined.

Speaking of Palmer Raids
Attorney General Bill Barr said Friday he was forming a new government task force to take aim at “anti-government extremists.”
Barr outlined the new group in a memo obtained by the Washington Post.
“Although these extremists profess a variety of ideologies, they are united in their opposition to the core constitutional values of a democratic society governed by law,” Barr wrote. “Some pretend to profess a message of freedom and progress, but they are in fact forces of anarchy, destruction, and coercion.”
Seditious agitators will not be tolerated. The boogaloo boiz are an existential threat to freedom. Traitorous heads will be busted.
Round up everybody in a Hawaiian shirt.
“destruction, and coercion”
Ah. So the USG wants to hire them?
That second part could be applied to a lot of run of the mill libertarians if they’re being looked at with a jaundiced eye. Not good at all, especially if a Biden administration inherits this task force.
It shouldn’t be surprising that anti government positions are always attacked by the government. What’s sad is how thoroughly indoctrinated three public is that being called anti-government can shut down the debate.
Round up everybody in a Hawaiian shirt.

Flagstaff could face a potential default on the certificates and loss of the properties if it somehow finds itself unable to make those lease payments, said Harry Papp, vice chairman of the PSPRS. However, Papp said he considers that to be highly unlikely while noting that the city already is on the hook for its pension expenses.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and predit if Flagstaff defaults the investors will never see the properties.

Unfortunately that article is pro Trump and is from a right wing source, so I can’t use it to convince anyone of what we’ve all been saying.

Cuomo on Meet the Press: we did everything right.
Of course you did. And keep throwing numbers around with no explanation of where they came from or how they were derived.
The best evidence we have masks are inconclusive:

Finally some good news.

Soooo, the pandemic is one way to get rid of Marxist-Leninist professors? God operates in mysterious ways.
Do you want actual white supremacists? This is how you get actual white supremacists.

I knew it. I never trusted Tundra or Jimbo.
Yeh. They’re waaaayyyy too nice. /narrows gaze.

“”“This unpaid emotional labor is often left to Black and Brown faculty who recognize it, feel it, and (all alone) are left to call it out,” “”
Marxist, having lost three debate on explotation theory of capital, retreat to ” well this costs me emotionally and you owe me for it!!!”
Emotions are not facts. Emotional responses are not objective. Your emotions are not in full control of you, unless you let them.
Non-prog theatre students? I only knew one other in my near decade of trying to graduate college.
I dated a theater student. Turns out someone studying drama is likely to fill your life with histrionic drama.
Colleges are hotbeds of white-supremacy. It is known.
Interesting alternate universe she inhabits.
Florence Pugh apologises after fan calls her out for cultural appropriation

I don’t owe you shit.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley: “Black Lives Matter is a mandate from the people. It’s time — pay us what you owe us. Our Black skin is not a crime. It is the beautiful robe of nation-builders.”
Neither is my white skin, you racist cunte. And since we are playing a ‘sins of the father game’, I’m descendant primarily from eastern Europeans. Slavs. I wonder where the term “slave” comes from. . .
“It’s time — pay us what you owe us”
Why do white people keep ginning up racial strife?
I’m descended from micks and Germans. Germans in Russia who were starting to be persecuted like every other minority (and weren’t considered “Russians” despite living multiple generations there). if my ancestors had waited around another 40 years, would be in either a hole in the ground or Siberia like most of the ones who did.
Fuck her.
As far as genealogy records show, I don’t have any direct descendants that were in the country when slavery existed, and only a handful that lived south of the Mason-Dixon for a tad over a generation.
er…direct ancestors…
One side of my family came over on the Mayflower…but in freedom points, I have John Adams in my lineage (just ignore his Sedition Acts)
I have ancestors who most assuredly owned slaves. In the US south. I still don’t owe an apology for something someone else did and I don’t have anything they can claim belongs to them. Fuck your corruption of blood.
My wife is about 2/3 of African descent, and 1/3 slaveowners descent. So the white part of her lowes the black part reparations?
Not even with your dick.
You *know* somehow (((we’re))) gonna get screwed from all this bullshit worse than anyone else.
The German-Russians were sent to Kazakhstan not Siberia. My favorite high-school teacher has a German name–her late husband was German-Russian. It’s one of my security questions with one of the banks. If I pronounce her last name in German, the system recognizes it as the correct answer. But it’s not how her name is pronounced in Russia and that doesn’t work with the phone security system.
“pay us what you owe us”
Considering all the tax money you’ve stolen from me, I’d say this number is negative.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley: “Black Lives Matter is a mandate from the people. It’s time — pay us what you owe us. Our Black skin is not a crime. It is the beautiful robe of nation-builders.”
Roll up your sleeves and build yourselves a nation, then.
Somewhere else.
They keys to building an effective, independent, strong community:
1. Maintain all Federal, state, and local welfare programs. In fact, expand them.
2. Get paid “reparations”. Preferably on an ongoing basis.
3. Have others “invest” by throwing around lots of condition-free cash that will never be paid back.
Hey peeps, remember a couple months ago when I posted that the local Farm and Home had a new sign over the gun counter that they would need to know your occupation and the purpose for buying?
Well here’s the rest of the story. It seems the ATF has another form in addition to Ye Olde 4473 for lowers that can be used as pistols (at least, maybe pistols in general) for the FFL to fill out. That requires the purchaser’s name, age, occupation, price and purpose for buying. I discovered this when buying a new lower for an AR10 I’m building. Never heard of an AR10 pistol and wouldn’t want to try one without a wrist brace.
Also, that occupation field seems designed to correlate with IRS records. But, silly me, that would be illegal.
“Occupation: None of your damn business.”
“Purpose for buying: None of your damn business.”
All the more reason to buy off the books when you can.
If you asked for all that info before allowing someone to cast a vote, or before allowing them to protest, or before performing an abortion, nobody would doubt that it is an infringement. Ask for it to obtain firearm, though, and not only is it not unconstitutional, it’s not enough.
But y’all think I’m crazy for saying Trump is the best president for Gun Control since Reagan. The guy is either an impotent pussy or doesn’t care.
“doesn’t care”
I’m guessing this one. He knows he’ll still get the gun vote just because he can point at Beta and his ilk and say “who would you rather have?”
Also-
Cuomo says all those people who died in the nursing homes were poisoned by employees who got it at the grocery store, not by the symptomatic patients kicked out of hospital beds into nursing homes.
Apparently they don’t have any grocery stores in Florida.
*Remembers Lobot had an cow-orker that got the VID* Checks out. Carry on. Nothing to see here.
He’s probably not entirely wrong, particularly at the levels of community spread that NY had. A patient with a known disease is more likely to be isolated appropriately from other residents than staff members wandering around infecting other patients because it’s just allergies or or i forgot to wash my hands after scratching my nose or this mask is just annoying if I properly fit it. Care facilities with poor infection control..have poor infection control.
Wait…didn’t he claim that essential business, aka grocery stores were bastions of health and where you should get a job?
Did somebody mention Jeezuss?
He’s probably not entirely wrong, particularly at the levels of community spread that NY had.
Probably not. And your explanation makes perfect sense. But (the numbers keep jumping around, and I can’t keep track) wasn’t some large portion of victims found to be from among those who were “sheltering in place”? Which makes me think the shelter in place business was mostly theatrical.
Listening to Cuomo lecture the rest of the nation is galling, to say the least.
Yes. Listening to any of them lecture makes my blood boil.
I’m not too sure – there’s a huge difference in when the patient is sent to the home.
Not to put words in RC Dean’s mouth, but the other day he said that homes have to take recovered patients, otherwise hospitals would fill up – once they’re not infectious, there’s no point in keeping them at the hospital if they can be cared for in a home.
I don’t think forcing active cases into nursing homes can be defended – I would think the danger posed from residents actively shedding the virus is much higher than workers bringing it in.
Some enterprising reporter could try and follow the patients from hospitals to homes, and see how the cases at the homes changed. But, that sounds like a lot of work, and I’m sure the reporter would rather write about how racist you are.
I guess who knows – I do agree it’s absolutely insane that he feels he’s in the position to give lectures.
I haven’t seen a definitive answer to the question of whether that was happening. Nor anyone in the MSM even curious to find out.
That’s a good point – I was assuming they did, and you’re right, the information is vague.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/new-york-will-no-longer-require-nursing-homes-take-covid-n1204586
seems to suggest that homes were forced to accept patients even with positive tests, but how that relates to infectiousness, I’m not sure.
I think Cuomo kind of panicked – remember when he said NY needed 30,000 ventilators, and they requested the navy hospital ship (which as far as I know was hardly used at all). They thought they were going to be Italy x 1000, and were desperate to keep hospitals from filling up, so they decided to discharge patients earlier than they should have. Of course, I admit that I haven’t followed things as closely as I used to, so maybe there’s info out there that gives credence to other viewpoints
Trying to get in the headspace (and drunk enough) to write a new cartoon isn’t easy when morning drinking after an over-night shift. But, I’m about half way done and made some new assets yesterday. Should be done early this week.
I believe in you. You can do it!
Had some potential buyers round what for buying up and turfing me out of this wonderful house. Instead of worrying about the fridge magnets I decided to leave some art on the whiteboard.
Gentrification!?
You could quite easily gentrify this place just by removing me.
Well when I say ‘house’ it was only a hole in the ground covered by a piece of tarpolin, but it was a house to US.
Nice art
