Monday Morning Links

I need to knock the rust off here. It’s been a while.

One of several inconceivably bad decisions.

Arsenal won the FA Cup in a game that had highly suspect officiating. And sadly, that knocks a small club out of the Europa League.  Justin Thomas won the WGC-St Jude as the players get ready for the first major of the year this week. Nothing else really happened. I’m struggling to report on baseball because I think the reason is about to be cancelled, and I don’t want to make an investment in my time.

Great player, eh.

If you were born on this day, you share it with Otis Elevator Company founder Elisha Otis, high school teacher John Scopes, crooner Tony Bennett, novelist Leon Uris, actor-activist Martin Sheen, onetime-billionaire and convicted felon Martha Stewart, hockey legend Marcel Dionne, genius filmmaker John Landis, rocker James Hetfield, hurler Rod Beck, football player Tom Brady, and swimmer Ryan Lochte.

That was a pretty decent list. Now on to…the links!

Coming soon to a street near you.

This headline needs to be corrected. Something more like “politicians who completely shut down the economy may cause 40 million Americans to lose their homes” would be more accurate.

At least we know what we’re gonna be up against now. And I gotta tell you, if they don’t start hitting the range, this boogaloo ain’t gonna last long. Man, Portland can’t do anything right.

You just can’t make some people happy. Sorry those recyclable shopping bags are traps for disease and are therefore less safe. Maybe don’t force them on people next time, ok?

Oh the horror of people having fun!

So what were they arrested for, exactly? Oh, they were arrested for breaking…no laws. Man, this insanity of giving EOs the power of law better stop soon or somebody is gonna pretty much declare him/herself a king/queen.  Get this shit to the courts.

And speaking of which…I’m getting pretty sick and tired of the media douchebags saying what a great job NY has done (they haven’t) and saying Texas, Arizona, and Florida are a bunch of dumbasses (they aren’t, relatively speaking).

July went out with a bang in Chicago. And it looks like August kicked off the same way.  Protip: get the hell out of there while you still can.

Do they really expect us to believe this bullshit? But even if it’s true, you can’t blame him for the actions of the gazillion looters and rioters that destroyed entire city blocks.

I don’t trust anybody who lobbies for this job. Especially the person known for doing pretty much anything to help her political career.* (*I mean Kamala Harris whoring herself out in case you were wondering.)

Hello 80s!!!! Enjoy it.

Now get out there and have a great day, friends!

  1. WTF

The headlines about bad things being caused by the pandemic piss me off. The government is shutting things down and destroying businesses, not the damn pandemic.

    • AlexinCT

Passive aggressive political class wants you to believe they had nothing to do with fucking us all over.

    • juris imprudent

The media stating that might tend to direct anger at govt instead of fear and groveling.

  2. Scruffy Nerfherder

Nobody in Minneapolis has any agency. They must mimic all bad actors.

    • AlexinCT

Just let them carjack, rob, and ass rape you.. It’s not worth fighting back…

If I was a criminal, this recommendation to the sheep would mean it was open season…

    • juris imprudent

Just remember, they are projecting – always, always – projecting from themselves onto others.

    • Broswater

The soft bigotry of low expectation. They really see these people as infants that must be protected from themselves

I like the ”Yeah we know who he is, he is a really really bad that did other bad things and there is a lot more of people like him because he is part of those bad people gang, but no we won’t charge him nor name him. It just so happens that it fits our narrative.”

  3. WTF

Man, this insanity of giving EOs the power of law better stop soon or somebody is gonna pretty much declare him/herself a king/queen. Get this shit to the courts.

Most of this shit is happening in blue states, with judges appointed by leftist Democrats, who will rule in favor of the Democrat tyrant governors doing this shit.

    • Rhywun

      Right? That ship has sailed.

    • banginglc1

Most of this shit is happening in blue states

Is it? Our Republican governor here in Indiana wanted 180 days in jail for his mask order being violated. Fortunately out AG (elected separately) forced him down, pointing out its illegality.

    • DEG

      I remember Shelley Luther.

If Abbot never wanted her and people like her arrested, his EO should have stated that from the beginning instead of being amended after her arrest.

      • prolefeed

Yeah, fuck Abbott. And all the mayors in TX who ordered this stuff.

The Blue states were generally worse, but hardly anyone let people make their own decisions.

  4. robc

Rod Beck is fifth in war, but the 3 above him are uninspiring him, so not a bad choice. HOWEVER, #1 is Hall of Famer Harry Heilmann. IN 1927, he finished 2nd in the AL MVP voting, which is pretty strong considering the competition that year. Bet you can’t guess who he lost to?

    • WTF

      I know because I’m a Yankee fan (how’s that for a hint?).

      • robc

It is a very funny hint, considering.

    • Not Adahn

Rod Beck is fifth in war

Fifth in peace, and fifth in the esteem of his countrymen?

    • Gdragon

That MVP result was helped by the “no repeat winners” rule during that period, no?

  5. Rhywun

Sorry those recyclable shopping bags are traps for disease and are therefore less safe.

That CBS article was exactly as fair and balanced as I expected it would be.

    • AlexinCT

It is fucking hilarious to me that “The People’s Republic of Connecticut” in January went through all sorts of fanfare (virtue signalling) about how they had mandated (not to be confused with two guys going on a voluntary date) these disposables be done away with. The environmentalists did their song & dance, and grandstanded as well. All the shops pulled the plastic & paper bags, and sold you the crappy reusable bags at premium prices. No bag, no groceries! There you go you Gaia hating bastage! Stop your bullshit about this being a bad move because it was unsanitary! Fast forward to three months later, and they pass a law forcing every store to spend a fortune getting these disposable bags back on the shelf. And now they tell you they will NOT bag for you if you bring in your own reusable. Fuck these pretenders and their shit.

      • Rhywun

It’s still a complete crap-shoot here in the PRoNY. Ostensibly there is still a ban on plastic, but nobody seems to be enforcing it and every shop has different procedures now. Some give out plastic, some paper, some nothing. Some charge for paper. Some charge for plastic (!). The one decent thing is nobody has a problem with bagging my reusable bags.

      • pan fried wylie

Prony is the position one takes to get fucked by a Brony.

      • pan fried wylie

And if not for the mishmash of contradictory laws/orders, this would almost sound like freedom. Almost.

  6. Sean

And longtime Biden friend Ed Rendell, a former Pennsylvania governor, told CNN that Harris can “rub people the wrong way.”

    She’s bad at handjobs?

    • sloopyinca

How could somebody so practiced in prostituting herself for political gain be bad at something as simple as an Old Fashioned?

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

She cheaps out on the lotion.

      • AlexinCT

Actually I was told she refuses to go down on ya unless you pay premium dollar…

      • WTF

        Someone should interview Willie Brown.

      • Mostly Peaceful JaimeRoberto

        Calloused hands.

    • Rufus the Monocled

i can see that as she rubs against someone on the dance floor with that maniacal giggle.

    • DEG

People still listen to Ed Rendell?

  7. Rufus the Monocled

Marcel Dionne is perhaps one of the most unheralded and under appreciated hockey player in history. Him and Pierre Pilote.

    • AlexinCT

The fact that they are admitting this makes me wonder if they know this revelation will come out sooner than later, and they are doing damage control…

      • pan fried wylie

WILL come out? “90yr old, obesese, stage 4 cancer patient with diabetes and advanced heart disease dies of COVID”, it’s BEEN OUT THE WHOLE TIME, and yet, here we still are.

    • PieInTheSky

this is why you need an NHS

      • leon

        National Hot Sorority?

  8. Rufus the Monocled

“…It was yet another symbol of reckless socializing during the pandemic: ”

    2020. Is it over yet?

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      Nope

I’m wondering when the taxpayers are going to revolt over schools not opening.

      • UnCivilServant

I expected taxpayers to revolt decades ago,

        I gave up on predicting.

      • Rufus the Monocled

That one is amazing. It’s so overtly political and has nothing to do with science.

But there are parents who seem to think it’s a bad idea to re-open them saying stupid things like ‘I’m not sending them if this and that protocol is not in place’.

So parents can be just as idiotic.

        Dumbasses.

      • WTF

Considering the astronomical property taxes we pay in NJ, there should be much more unrest over this than there is.

      • Rufus the Monocled

My position is that if we have real leaders and not cowards pretending to be leaders they’d tell the teacher’s to get back to work or else they’re fired. Out.

I’d see it as opportunity to purge and get rid of the shit.

But we have cowards on both sides who are projecting their fears and stupidity onto children.

Way to go setting an example to our future you fucken loser clowns.

      • pan fried wylie

        Abort them all.

      • AlexinCT

In a move that really surprised me, my town has decided that the elementary school will reopen, and do so on time. The middle and high schools are a unified system (3 towns), and that group is having issues deciding what to do (a lot more union presence since that cabal was not busted like we did with our elementary school a few years back when they tried to fuck the tax payer over hard and good and ended up being the ones taking it in the ass).

      • invisible finger

Considering the product, I’d prefer government schools never open again. As soon as they open, they will cry poor.

    • Rufus the Monocled

Man oh man the 80s and 90s were an awesome time compared to this crap. I miss them.

I can’t believe what I’m seeing in 2020. Bunch of losers. Everyone. Especially public officials. They suck.

      • AlexinCT

I suspected we were heading here Mr. Muppet. You can’t spend the time to pussify 2 generations like we did with the bullcrap about having self-esteem despite having zero accomplishments and participation trophies for all (and yes, I blame the fucking idiot parents, not the kids), and not get to this zero risk tolerance and love for top men decisions we have today.

    • Rhywun

      COVIDIOTS!!1!

    • sloopyinca

Front-page Headline: “Reckless socializing blamed for possibly tens of Covid cases.”

Page 37 blurb: “Sending positive cases to nursing home may have unnecessarily led to 25,000 deaths.”

      Fuck the media.

      • Rufus the Monocled

This has been common knowledge since March.

Why do they act like it’s a revelation?

      • sloopyinca

Because they want to control the narrative and make Cuomo a viable presidential candidate one day instead of having him be known as the person who effectively killed tens of thousands of seniors.

      • AlexinCT

Like they are doing for Biden, whom they in the past called a dunce when he ran against Obama and Clinton? Now that he also has dementia thay are calling him a statesman… Fuck they are morons these tards.

      • Nikkodemus

Is it “common knowledge” though? None of my liberal/prog acquaintances know anything about it.

      • AlexinCT

Progs are really good at avoiding any facts that might hurt the narrative. I am sure they heard it but dismissed it because it didn’t come from an approved source…

    • sloopyinca

1-2-3-4-5? That’s amazing. I’ve got the same combination on my luggage!

  9. leon

Harris is such a bad choice, but it would be interesting to see what happens if she is chosen. Right now it seems like Biden is stalling, hoping someone else will make the decision for him.

    • Rhywun

Amazingly, there is an even worse choice in that commie Bass person.

    • Rufus the Monocled

Joe is at the kitchen table asking at what time The Aldrich Family will come on the radio.

      ‘Joe-eeeeeeee!’

      • leon

The fact that it’s being tested, and you hear that there are splits in the campaign over the choice, shows that Biden is not in charge of the decision

    • WTF

I’m pretty sure the DNC realizes that if Kamala Harris is the pick, Trump is going to trot out Dem debate footage of Harris calling Joe a racist.

      • leon

But then they get the Yass Queen segment of the vote.

    • robc

I am gusssing they haven’t considered the Joe & Joe ticket. Could Manchin deliver WV? Probably not. But I think a lot of people who dislike Trump might consider voting for Biden hoping he dies quick if Manchin was the veep. I could be wrong, but he seems like the kind of candidate that could hold some of the historical democratic vote is some key states.

      • sloopyinca

He’s already said he is choosing a black woman person with a cervix.

      • robc

Maybe Manchin identifies as a black woman.

      • robc

Also, since when did we start believing things politicians say?

      • sloopyinca

This one is worth believing, because if Biden goes back on it, you can bet your ass it kills him on Election Day.

      • R C Dean

Is Manchin a POC chick? If not, then he’s not on any list, short or not.

      • Q Continuum

Maybe he identifies as a panracial, masculine-presenting, transgender lesbian.

    • AlexinCT

Biden is not making any decisions. His team is. Biden doesn’t even know if he is wearing diapers or underwear anymore. And he is being handled and hidden to make sure people don’t see how bad that is.

    • Homple

Someone else is already making all Joe’s decisions for him.

  10. Rhywun

Protip: get the hell out of there while you still can.

To be fair, it is not exactly a surprise where exactly the crime is rising. Hint: it’s the same highly localized neighborhoods that are already shitholes.

    • sloopyinca

I know. But there’s still plenty of other reasons to leave. Namely: getting fleeced on your property taxes to pay for all the social programs and cops who aren’t getting a damn thing corrected.

    • DEG

#1. Yum. It’ll be a hard job, but I have to keep going.

#6 and #49 are the same. She has appeared in other galleries. I like her iChive gallery except for the face diaper picture.

#17 has another good iChive gallery.

      #41 – strip chess?

#61 – what are you reading?

  11. PieInTheSky

I am starting to be more convinced the covid was much more manageable if treated from the very first symptoms/detection with some vitamins (C and D) Zinc and HCQ

    • Q Continuum

Get a load of this Nazi over here.

    • leon

But Hydroxyphetamine was proven to not work!!!

    • WTF

Your post violates community standards and will be censored.

    • R C Dean

Way too many people who saw profit in a panic:

Media – if it bleeds it leads.
Pharma (and it’s captured regulators) – new pandemic needs new (patented) drugs.
Politicians – fear is the health of the state.
Big Gov agencies – a wet dream of overt rule by fiat.

    • PieInTheSky

I mean I don;t want to go all conspiracy theory and shit but Zinc is important to the immune system. There were studies in the past which showed it may improve common cold and flu symptoms, not fully conclusive but enough when you don;t have anything else. So does vit D, deficiency is bad for colds. Vit C as well.

The whole thing is, I look at it like fitness supplements. If it is cheap, does not hurt and it may help, why not. Vitamin and zinc supplementation are these things. HCQ is m0re risky but well studied.

But the whole point is this helps most to prevent bad symptoms. So you have to take it before bad symptoms. If you can prevent the onset of bad stuff, you prevent both deaths and future morbidity. Most hospitals gave HCQ only after bad symptoms set in, and often without Zinc, although most reports of success had zinc in it. Also many studies omitted zinc. Why? It is cheap, it will not harm, and earliest information from doctors who claimed success said it helped. I cannot understand why Zinc was not included in treatment and many studies. If you have an idea it may help, why not include it? It makes no sense to me.

      • sloopyinca

        Zinc is very valuable.

But probably not as valuable as zinc oxide.

      • invisible finger

American Conservatism is Fiddling While Rome Burns

      https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/american-conservatism-is-fiddling-while-rome-burns/

. It’s the foolish libertarianism that hates the government more than it loves America. – off course thats the problem

. Today, libertarians actively side with our enemies: they promote open borders and empty prisons, and strengthen China’s hand through their consumer-focused economic policies. Ours is primarily a conservatism of countries and borders, citizens and families, none of which can take root in the barren libertarian soil of atomized individuals and global markets. – barren soils is bad

“Nazi!” Is a cheap shot at anybody who isn’t a Nazi. And remember, everyone The Enlightened disagree with is not a Nazi

    • leon

I saw that this morning. It sounded like Trumps is doing the old “sink to there level” trick with Chinese business stuff.

Of course that means we all the up more screwed.

I would posit that she cares more about BLM’s Marxist platform than their pretense at caring about “black lives”. Either way it doesn’t matter when everything is all race, all the time. All she has to do is play the race card and convince enough people to vote purely on race.

If she kicks it on Friday before the election, McConnell will schedule a vote for Monday afternoon.

Actually, slightly kidding, as they will be in power regardless in the Senate through December, they will schedule the vote sometime before end of year.

    • Rebel Scum

Ginsburg, who was in and out of the hospital last week, said she intends to remain on the court, a decision that likely was influenced by the conservative nominee President Donald Trump would put up to replace her if she were to retire.

      So it’s about politics then.

    • leon

Similarly, Chief Justice John Roberts suffered a forehead injury that required stitches on Father’s Day. In a normal year, the court would have met in public the next day and Roberts’ wound would have been easy to see.

Forget about it. People buy doom and gloom, not good news. It is the same with politics – the loudest (and stupidest) are called “leaders”. The question is whether or not they are charismatic enough to go with the loudness and stupidity. Trump certainly is, for some. And that demonstrates the limitations right there. Biden is a Dem version of Kasich – so many boxes checked, but no real substance and all of the charm of a piss-soaked rag.

I was feeling a strong disturbance in the force from Susan Rice, but then both her and Biden are directly implicated in the biggest scandal since Watergate that noone in the MSM is talking about, so I wonder if they will avoid that one, and she’s probably too establishmenty for the Bernie Bros and the shock troops. It went right by here… and it never even got all that windy. Maybe 25-30 mph winds and they eye was some 40 miles away. And it barely rained. Most of the time it was sunny.

For those who don’t live in Hurricane country, those outer bands can sometimes lead to cloudy, rainy, stormy days for 3 or 4 days. These things are huge. Thinly veiled? I read it as some of the most racist shit imaginable.

“99% of plastics is made from fossil fuels, and we know that they are a major contributor to climate change,” Natalie Fie, head of City to Sea, a British nonprofit dedicated to campaigning against pollution, told CBS News’ Roxana Saberi.

Oh, for crying out loud. They’ll just say anything. Conflating “plastics” with “major contributors to climate change” because “fossil fuels” and “single use plastic bags” is beyond scientifically illiterate. There’s so much wrong in there that it is hard to respond to, and it is only one sentence.

    1. Plastics are not a major contributor to climate change. They are what you call a carbon sink… they end up in a landfill where the carbon is sequestered.

    2. Single use plastic bags are not a major portion of plastic use.

    3. Reusable plastic bags do not use less plastic than single use plastic bags. Counter-intuitively, single use plastic bags use less plastic and cause less environmental harm that both reusable plastic bags and reusable cloth bags.

    4. To the extent that the British nonprofit City to Sea is fighting pollution of the seas (judging by their name), focusing on single use plastics in the US is idiotic – our waste management chain is pretty tight, with almost all plastic waste ending up in landfills, not in the sea. Assuming that they are worried about things like the Great Pacific Gyre, that stuff comes from places like China. The US contributes less than 2% of ocean plastic waste, despite being what was until recently the world’s largest consumer of plastic.

    5. Plastic companies are just fine with the government mandating reusable plastic bags. They actually use much more plastic than disposable plastic bags and they sell for much more, so plastic companies and manufacturers both make more money and move more product due to the mandates. (I don’t recall the exact number, but it turns out that you have to reuse a plastic bag for many years for it to wind up on par with a single use bag… plus, people use the disposable bags for other things, things that require them to buy single use bags when the reusable ones are banned)

That is a heck of a lot to get wrong in one single sentence. And shame on the reporter for not knowing any of it. Sure, it might be a bit much to expect a reporter who does this for a living to know more than some random dude in Florida, but you gotta at least know some of that stuff. It is all available with a quick google, and most of it received heavy coverage in the science media at the time. I mean, ask a question or something.

    • cyto

      I knew I missed something…..

A majority of the worlds recyclables end up in China so it’s not surprising the majority of that ends up in the ocean. On the net we are going to find out that people who recycle have much larger net carbon output than the evil selfish people who don’t.

      • cyto

Waste in China only makes it into a landfill about 60% of the time. (compare with 98%+ here). At least, that was the number a year ago or so when the studies about the GPG came out tracing the source. One big driver for me learning about it was how annoyed I was at my local city for banning plastic straws. So I guess it was a little more than a year ago that I read all that stuff.

    • Rhywun

It’s not that the reporter doesn’t “know” stuff, it’s that his employer has an obvious agenda to push. We will never learn what he “knows” because he has no interest in telling us.

      • cyto

This is actually the correct analysis. The assignment was “write a story about how this is bad for the environment and climate change” and the trash activist is only there to provide a pull quote.

Still, amazing to find a pull quote that has more things wrong than actual words in the quote.

  25. Nikkodemus

So my youngest (hes 4) had a dentist appt today. Got out of the car and masked up (I’ll play along with the theater for my kids health) and went inside. Answered all the standard questions, then they told me “We’re having parents wait out in their cars while we do our examinations”. Luckily, he’s a fairly confident 4 year old, so it was no issue. I ended up finding out that if parents wanted to be there with their kids, they would not only need a mask, but a gown as well. WTF??? Also, while I was sitting in the car waiting, I watched one of the office employees walk right in with no mask. Theater for thee, but not for me.

    • Viking1865

A large part of this is a hecklers veto type affect.

I work for a business that brings a lot of people in the door. We have the full on “sanitize hands, temp check, person asking you questions” thing to enter. We surveyed our customers, and this was the preference of the majority. The majority of the people who responded, who are probably the paranoid people glued to their media feeds about THE PANDEMIC OF DOOM. The people who couldn’t be bothered to respond probably think the whole thing is dumb, but they didn’t engage against the shriekers.

Basically, for your dentist, if they don’t do all this shit, they get blasted on social media by the Chicken Littles about how ABC DENTISTS ARENT KEEPING OUR KIDS SAFE. But if they do this stupid security theater, than Nikkodemus just rolls his eyes and goes along with it to get his kids dentist appt done.

      • Rufus the Monocled

      • Nikkodemus

I think that’s the case on a lot of things these days. The only reason the shriekers get what they want is because people like me just want to live our fucking lives and be left alone, so we go with it because its easier than starting an argument that could be put on social media and used to destroy said life.

So, we could have chosen to go to max allowable entry, but we chose, on the supposed preference of our customers, to go to a smaller number than the max allowed.

It’s like if state govts allowed restaurants to open at 50%, but my restaurant listened to the small minority of shrieking nervous nellies and opened at 20% TO BE MORE SAFER THAN OTHER BAD RESTAURANTS. Chasing the good feels of paranoid shutins over the ability to put more paying customers in the door.

Strange that you mention Foreigner today… I was just over at TOS over the weekend. Kurt Loder has a piece up about the Go-Go’s not being in the Rock and Roll hall of fame, inspired by a new documentary coming out.

I spammed all over the thread because the Rock and Roll HoF is a watered down joke. I started listing other bands that had albums out the same year as the Go-Go’s seminal album… Foreigner 4 is among them. That was actually a pretty great year for music.

    • leon

why on earth would the Go-Go’s deserve to be in the HoF?

      • cyto

There was a whole argument to that effect.

I used facts and logic. I was countered with “first all-female band with a number one album!”

It was a spectacular clash of intellect over one of the seminal issues of our time. I think the “Rock and Roll HoF is a joke” crowd took the day.

The reason there have not been hundreds of follow-on groups growing int the fertile soil of the ground the broke is that nobody cares if they are all women, or if they have a dude playing bass, or any of it. They don’t want all women, and they don’t want no women. They care if the music speaks to them and if they have a charismatic and entertaining stage presence. That’s about it.”

They should have been able to get there the first time Comey or Brennan explained that the entire thing was because they had “intel” from the Steele Dossier that Russians were trying to infiltrate the Trump campaign… so they began a counter-intelligence investigation to prevent that…. and never told anyone at the Trump campaign, but instead started spying on them instead of spying on russians.

Everyone here had it figured out the second they revealed that they had indeed been tapping the phones of various Trump campaign officials. Remember when they said he was a paranoid-delusional for claiming “his wires were tapped”? If you believed the Russia Collusion story for even one second after that moment, you had your blinders on. And everything Mueller did came after that moment.

      • R C Dean

they never got around to figuring out that the entire thing was a sham to spy on Trump and sabotage his administration

I think its pretty well established from their own internal documents that they knew immediately.

      • leon

In government, you can commit any crime, as long as 1) You never admit that you did that, and 2) You have the political clout to get people from challenging you about it.

      • B.P.

I vaguely remember a fact check that called Trump’s wiretapping claims wrong because a phone was not physically tapped electronically, like wiretapping was done 50 years ago.

      • Akira

        It’s fucking ridiculous.

It’s not like these Deep Staters just stumbled across some evidence of collusion and had to take action for the good of the country; they’ve pretty much admitted that the whole thing was just a way to destroy Trump. Andrew McCabe said on national television that they discussed ways to get rid of him and settled on using a special prosecutor.

And everything that has come out since the end of the Mueller investigation has only confirmed that the entire story was fabricated bullshit. The continued mentioning of “Russian collusion” by the corporate media shows us where the real “fake news” problem is.

    Our best. Our brightest.

The government should again impose strict coronavirus-related lockdowns for a month or longer across the U.S. in order to boost the economy, a top Federal Reserve official said Sunday.

Neel Kashkari, president of the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank, said the nation needs to control the spread of the virus, which is increasing across much of the country, to get back on a path to economic health.

“That’s the only way we’re really going to have a real robust economic recovery. Otherwise, we’re going to have flare-ups, lockdowns and a very halting recovery with many more job losses and many more bankruptcies for an extended period of time unfortunately,” Kashkari said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

To do so, he suggested strict shutdowns, which is contrary to what President Trump and many of his allies have been pushing in recent months as measures to aid the economy.

“I mean if we were to lock down really hard, I know I hate to even suggest it, people will be frustrated by it, but if we were to lock down hard for a month or six weeks, we could get the case count down so that our testing and our contact tracing was actually enough to control it the way that it’s happening in the Northeast right now,” Kashkari said. “They had a rocky start, but they’re doing a pretty good job right now.”

He warned the virus will spread throughout the country with flare-ups and local lockdowns for the “the next year or two,” causing more businesses to fail, without such measures.

“We’re going to see many, many more business bankruptcies, small businesses, big businesses, and that’s going to take a lot of time to recover from to rebuild those businesses and then to bring workers back in and re-engage them in the workforce. That’s going to be a much slower recovery for all of us,” Kashkari said.

He also said that Congress can afford large sums for coronavirus relief efforts, though Republican lawmakers are looking to lessen the amount of supplemental aid for unemployed Americans as part of the next relief bill.

It’ll be fun. It’ll be like we’re all on vacation. And don’t worry, we have plenty of checks.

One more degenerate who should be hanging by his heels.

“They had a rocky start, but they’re doing a pretty good job right now.”

I’ve noticed TPTB are trying to spin out of this, because the news has gradually spread to people that NY, NJ, CT absolutely had the worst deaths. Like, the media is trying to make DeSantis the moron, but people are actually counting deaths and death rates and aren’t buying it.

So now the message seems to be “Mistakes were made, but Great Governor Cuomo rallied in the end and finished really strong”

        That article was really strange…

My immediate take beyond “play stupid games, win stupid prizes” was “who thinks it is a good idea to spook a large animal in a crowd? ” I mean, she had her buddy filming it, and then what? Best case, the horse jumps and throws the cop? He ends up like Christopher Reeves? Worst case, he panics and stomps a half dozen people?

Friends of the Little Guy speak out on their behalf

More than 100 current and former top executives at major U.S. companies are calling on Congress to pass long-term relief for small businesses to ensure they survive the coronavirus pandemic.

In a letter released Monday that was sent to top congressional leaders of both parties in the House and Senate, the CEOs and other executives warn of significant consequences to the economy if Congress doesn’t immediately act to save small business.

“By Labor Day, we foresee a wave of permanent closures if the right steps are not taken soon,” they wrote. “Allowing small businesses to fail will turn temporary job losses into permanent ones. By year end, the domino effect of lost jobs — as well as the lost services and lost products that small businesses provide — could be catastrophic.”

The letter, spearheaded by Howard Schultz, chairman emeritus of Starbucks, was also signed by Facebook chief operations officer Sheryl Sandberg, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon and U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO Thomas Donahue, among many others.

In addition to pushing for another round of short-term relief through the Paycheck Protection Program, they called on lawmakers to pass legislation similar to a measure proposed by Sens. Michael Bennet, D-Co., and Todd Young, R-Ind. Their bill would extend the period for the hardest-hit businesses that have seen their revenues decline by at least 25 percent to use their PPP funds and meet requirements for loan forgiveness.

Let’s load them down with more debt. And maybe we can continue to incentivise their employees to not go back to work. That will definitely help.

Or maybe we could stop actively destroying the economy.

So I have been predicting that there either will be no debates this election or that they will be conducted virtually at the insistence of the Biden camp. In a normal Pres election year haven’t they already announced the dates already? Here is the first article I have seen laying the groundwork for Joe, I expect a cavalcade of similar shite in the next few weeks. “It would be incredibly irresponsible to hold a live debate with a pandemic going on.” “Trump wants to kill your grandma just so he can grandstand on tv.” I don’t know if it will be ultimately successful, but if I had to bet serous money I would say they get it down to 1 live debate or all virtual ones. Let’s see.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/03/opinion/trump-biden-presidential-debates-2020.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage

    • leon

A lot of people know that the “Don’t show them Biden” has been a good strategy. No reason to deviate from a winning strategy. So yes, i suspect that they will maneuver into getting out of debates. If the Trump Camp isn’t ready for that, then they have been derelict in thinking about it.

    • pan fried wylie

but if I had to bet serous money

“TRUMP WANTS PEOPLE TO INJECT CURRENCY, VOTE BIDEN!!11oneoneone”

    • Viking1865

Yeah I still think the vast majority of the country isn’t going to go along with that.

If Biden ducks out, Trump is gonna score that as a forfeit, and I think the electorate will agree with him Every single person who’s voting in America, except people voting for the first time, have cast a vote after three debates. 84 million people watched it last year, and when you add in people who watched clips or let their own preferred TEAM analysis into their brains, its higher.

They would have needed to start the propaganda back in March, I don’t think they can pull it off this fast.

      • R C Dean

I still think the Dems will make ridiculous demand after ridiculous demand until Trump says no, and then say Trump is refusing to debate.

They’ve already started, with their “real-time fact checkers”.

The deal breaker might be a demand for a “virtual” debate. I don’t see how they can roll the dice with Biden exposed on stage for an hour at a time, for however many debates. I think they are trapped, and their only exit is to collude with the debate org and the media to structure a debate Trump won’t participate in.

      • KSuellington

That will be exactly how they do it. I’d be surprised if it plays out differently.

      • Viking1865

Trump has a very simple rebuttal to that:

Biden should debate me just like Hillary did.

Yes, the Journolist will try to spin it away as PANDEMIC and whatnot, but bottom line, the American voter believes the debates are a requirement to be President, and I don’t think they can change that in two months, even with a full on propaganda effort.

      • leon

yes, but you already have half the electorate already on the side of no debates.

  39. DEG

It was yet another symbol of reckless socializing during the pandemic: The Liberty Belle was dinged for violating distancing rules, and its owners were accused of running an unlicensed bar, the authorities said.

The author can go fuck himself. The boat owners did nothing wrong.

The increasing nastiness is fueled by a sense, even among Biden’s closest advisers, that Biden is entering the final phase of the search without a clear favorite. Rather than a traditional “short list” of three candidates, people close to the process expect him to interview five or six finalists for the position.

He probably just forgot whom he chose and needs to go through the process again.

    LOGIC
    TW: Robert Reich

What’s Trump’s plan to revive the economy? The same one he’s been pushing for months: just “reopen” it.

He wants the public to believe the shutdown orders that began in March caused the economy to tank in the first place, so reversing them will bring the economy back.

Rubbish. It was the virus that caused the downturn, and its resurgence is taking the economy down again. The virus is surging back because governors reopened prematurely, before the virus was under control – at Trump’s repeated insistence.

The sequence of cause-and-effect is clear. The virus has surged most in states that were among the first to reopen, such as Florida, South Carolina, Texas and much of the rest of the sun belt.

Because of this resurgence, many states are pausing plans to reopen and some are reimposing restrictions. But these restrictions are not the reason the economy is slowing. They are the necessary consequence of allowing the pandemic to get out of control.

    ——-

The White House argues that the extra unemployment payments have discouraged workers from seeking jobs because some are receiving more money in benefits than they would earn by working.

“We don’t want to create disincentives to work,” says Trump adviser Larry Kudlow.

More rubbish. A study by Yale economists finds “no evidence” that people who have lost their jobs are choosing to stay unemployed because of the extra federal aid. In fact, “workers facing larger [unemployment] expansions generally appear to be quicker to return to work than others, not slower.”

People can’t go back to work because there is very little work for them to do. Fourteen million more people are unemployed than there are jobs.

Where did all the jobs go? The plague killed them. Not governors.

Definitely not “public health experts” with criminally fictitious computer models.

He wants the public to believe the shutdown orders that began in March caused the economy to tank in the first place, so reversing them will bring the economy back.

The first half is correct. The second half is questionable. IMO, reopening is necessary, but not sufficient.

    • Urthona

It’s hard to believe there’s an “economist” who believes that longer and more generous unemployment benefits does not encourage unemployment. It’s completely provable and has been proven over and over again.

      • leon

It is politically convenient to believe so. Economists are little more than sophists campaigning for one ideology or another. Some are consitent with their ideology, and some are more nakedly partisan in that their ideology is nothing more than partisan politics.

The idea that we “must close the economy to save it” is based off the idea that by shutting down we are saving X amount of dollars in saved lives, and so it is better for the economy to shutdown for 3 years than to let the virus go unimpeded. It is complete shit, but it is politically useful shit, and about all they have to argue for keeping the economy shutdown.

      • pan fried wylie

Surely he must have at least a back of the envelope estimate of X to make such an argument, right?

      • leon

The amount i’ve seen, is that based off of “value of life” estimates, used by the government, the amount of lives saved would equal 3 years of GDP, and that is why it is completely justified to halt the economy to slow the virus, because it is less than that.

Of course anyone who thinks can see that there is something wrong with this. If this were true, then it would be worth it to shutdown the entire economy for 3 years. But that can’t be because everyone would die if we all stopped working.

      • R C Dean

the amount of lives saved would equal 3 years of GDP

How many lives are claimed to be saved?

I’ve seen several of the branch covidian class saying we need to rush the Vaccine and need it now without further testing. I really think they are starting to get scared about this thing basically vanishing by the end of the month due to burnout. Hospitalizations are down in nearly all the hotspots deaths are going to follow shortly we are going to get around 100 a day by the end of the month in all likelyhood. The school shut downs will be hilarious by mid september when no deaths are occurring and they are still screaming it’s unsafe after private schools largely are open with in person learning. We are going to get through this pandemic with nealry noone interested in getting a vaccine and them having to make a national mandate on some level( I predict it’s based on school enrollment) making everyone get one for something that’s going to have killed less than 15,000 people under the age of 55.

Hey, if there had been a Chicken Pox vaccine when I was a wee lad, I wouldn’t be missing a few eyelashes. The horror!

    • Urthona

I am somewhat biased here because I am presently in the Pfizer vaccine trial and receiving injections of either the vaccine or a placebo.

I really want this to go away and so I signed up.

But it’s the left now who’s worried about rushing. They’re afraid a successful vaccine will benefit Trump. There’s an article in the NYT this morning complaining that corners are being cut and an article in the right wing Federalist saying that is bull crap.

      It’s interesting.

Note this: the vaccine trials are already on phase 3 and thus far it has been 100% effective .

Makes you wonder what happen if the Feds got out of the way more often.

      • R C Dean

Got a link for progress on the vaccine? I seem to recall that there are several being trialed.

      • Fatty Bolger

Makes you wonder what happen if the Feds got out of the way more often.

What?!! Haven’t you heard of Thalidomide? We’d all be flopping around with flipper hands and feet! Thalidomide! Thalidomide!

      • leon

Ghoulish has been the best word for what i have seen coming from the left this past year. They are thriving on death, reveling in it and desiring it. They are the necrophages of our time, feasting on misery, hoping to ride that bull to political power.

      • kinnath

Is it the Feds getting out of the way? Or is the Feds promising multi-billion-dollar contracts for the resulting vaccine?

      • Idle Hands

Yes this is definitely possible as well. But I think many of the people beating the drum on this thing see an out with the vaccines coming to market they wouldn’t have otherwise. A ton of smart people can’t admit they were buffaloed so completely about this.

    • pan fried wylie

We need a vaccine now or else how are we going to send armed squads door to door and start shooting people who refuse?

It’s hard to believe there’s an “economist” who believes that longer and more generous unemployment benefits does not encourage unemployment. It’s completely provable and has been proven over and over again.

But that one study. Correlation! From YALE!

    • Fourscore

Of all the ways for an economy to grow and prosper, the government has chosen the one guaranteed way to destroy it.

Timely! I was berated by a customer last night for our store not having any paper bags available for him. He was bitching about using plastic and I apologized, explaining that we haven’t had paper bags since the ChiComPox panic started. He questioned my intelligence and told me that the store keeps them in the back and will always bring them out for him upon request and that I should go back and find him some. I wandered off to the back and vaped in the bathroom for a while, reflecting upon the fact that I’m the schmuck who receives the pallets and we haven’t had a single paper bag in this store since March.

    • UnCivilServant

You don’t know about the magical back room that always contains exactly what the customer is demanding whenever they demand it regardless of how much or little the store has?

      • leon

A room any store can’t do without.

      • Fatty Bolger

That always made me laugh when I worked at a bookstore. The customers seemed to imagine an Indiana Jones style warehouse in the back, filled with boxes containing copies of every book ever published in the history of mankind. The reality was a room barely bigger than a typical walk-in closet.

      • Fourscore

Well, Amazon does it, so there.

      • Fourscore

I worked in a used books and record store. We would hear “I’ve been looking for this record for 10 years and now I have it”
We would ring it up, take the record and pretend to put it in a bag, instead have a junk record under the counter, fold the junk and hear it crack, put it in a small bag and hand it to the customer with a “I didn’t had a big bag, here ya go” Much hilarity would ensue.

    • SUPREME OVERLORD trshmnstr

“it’ll take a while, but if youll kindly remove that stick from your ass, I’ll gladly pulp it and make it into a paper bag for you”

    • KSuellington

Ha! I bet the look on his face was enjoyable for you after you came out ten minutes later saying you looked in every spot and that you’re clean out of them. I hate assholes like that. My theory is there are about 5-10% of the population that thrive off of being jerks to anyone in the service industry and they largely get their egos massaged by people who don’t want to lose their jobs. As I own my own small biz and I don’t really need more customers (and really don’t need any asshole customers) I love telling them to beat it like Michael Jackson.

      • invisible finger

My favorite is when it’s 5 degrees below zero outside and the customer comes in not wearing any gloves and reaches in the refrigerator, touches a six-can-pack of beer and yells “The beer is warm!!!”

      • pan fried wylie

It’s like they’ve never burned their frozen hands on the cold water tap before.

    • DEG

      Some people.

“Arkansas Black Lives Matter protesters traveled to Zinc, Arkansas, to march on the Ku Klux Klan’s Grand Wizard’s hometown and compound Sunday.

The protest comes just four days after a viral video labeled nearby Harrison, Arkansas, as being ‘America’s Most Racist Town’ and the ‘Ku Klux Klan’s headquarters.’

The KKK’s website claims its national headquarters to be in Harrison and that its national director, Thomas Robb, uses at least three post office boxes there, the Springfield News-Leader reported.

    Is that a flamethrower?

    • R C Dean

      Yes it is.

      Interesting choice.

      • Fatty Bolger

Lance and shield is more traditional.

    • kinnath

They really are trying to start a shooting war.

    • EvilSheldon

Hey, ‘local resident!’ You’re not impressing anyone with your AR with no sights.

      • Not Adahn

She’s got some pretty righteous forearms for a chick tho.

      • R C Dean

I think I see a peep sight on there.

I doubt she was “watching over” the protestors.

If the shooting starts, I’m looking for my shot at the guy with the flamethrower.

    • Apples and Knives

      Sure looks like it.

I know at least one Facebook friend who went to that march, probably more. By the way, having been to Harrison a couple times and having many friends (and one hippy ex girlfriend) from there, the idea that it’s the most racist town in America is so stupid. They’ve got very vocal racists outside of town that the actual townspeople are very embarrassed by. But it’s like saying LA is the most conservative city in America because Ronald Reagan, John Wayne and Ben Shapiro live(d) there. It’s probably not a progressive hot spot or anything, but my friend who went to the march lives there as an openly gay man without issues. There are Asian and Indians business owners there. Not a huge black population, but that’s the Ozarks.

    • Rhywun

      America’s Most Racist Town

      OFFS.

      • UnCivilServant

        San Fransisco?

        Hollywood?

      • R C Dean

Probably still Boston, would be my guess.

      • pan fried wylie

DC, by dollars spent on racism.

    • pan fried wylie

      “Mostly-stationary-combustion maintenance device.”

    • pan fried wylie

The protest comes just four days after a viral video labeled all suburbs as being ‘America’s Most Racist Town’ and the ‘Ku Klux Klan’s headquarters.’

      • leon

DC isn’t the most racist town?

      • pan fried wylie

this edited quote was to point out how the mission is on to the Move Violence To The Suburbs stage. I pointed out DC in the appropriate place above.

      • leon

Ahh. yeah i didn’t read it clearly. Yeah they have a hard on for destroying the suburbs.

      • pan fried wylie

Might as well destroy something worth destroying. How do you even know when you’ve destroyed something like a Minneapolis or NYC?

    • R C Dean

Reading the whole article, I’m not seeing much to criticize. They stayed clear of a confrontation, threw a little barbecue, there was no violence. Not, I suspect, “in spite of” all the guns on both sides, but “because of” all the guns on both sides.

      • pan fried wylie

        threw a little barbecue

IS IT A FUCKING FLAMETHROWER OR NOT, MAKE UP YOUR MIND.

      • UnCivilServant

        It’s a portable grill.

      • pan fried wylie

        If you’re throwing it, yeah.

    • Grosspatzer

It is known that the feds have a monopoly on stimulus checks. Cutting out the middleman will get you in trouble.

    • Not Adahn

See, what you need to do is print it with Bezos’ account number on it so that the check clears. By the time he figures out he didn’t buy that particular Porsche, you’ll be long gone. And anyway you can always claim you were set up by Amber Heard — he’ll believe that one.

    • leon

I’ll admit that the butthurt of people upset because that it hasn’t failed due to covid is amusing.
