I totally want to respond to the morning thread’s inclusion of the B-52s’ Private Idaho. Excellent choice!

Somehow I missed until now that Ricky Wilson played a Mosrite. I know he used a special tuning for Rock Lobster but forgot he got the tone with the Mosrite.

        *whew*

I didn’t really want to point out that Roam kinda sucks…

(TBF, I probably just heard it _way_ too much when it came out)

      • Toxteth O'Grady

Channel Z > Roam > Love Shack (speaking only of that album)

      • Frnxt Ghrt Digby Gurm

Lord, I barely remember Channel Z!

        Ha–good times.

      • Frnxt Ghrt Digby Gurm

        Wait–you wanted to link that??

What you picked was so much better, and considering the state of the band back then, your sentiment makes sense.

      • slumbrew

Are we into the insane nonsense part of the night?

Because saying Roam is somehow superior to Tempted is just crazy-talk.*

        * These statements have not been evaluated by anyone. These opinions are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

      • Frnxt Ghrt Digby Gurm

Oh, you done did it now.

Roam, at the very least, has a category it could be classified into….sort of. Tempted is a bunch of nothing, and quickly gets the channel changed should its shit, shrill warbling touch my ears.

And, I’m not exactly a fan of the B-52’s, although I don’t dislike them, either.

“Squeeze”–tha fuck is that? Nada, that’s what.

A-ha is one of the supreme musical talents of the 80’s (and beyond, really). You’ll get no argument from me, there.

Tempted is just a frggin’ whiny sounding song. Oh:

It was produced by Elvis Costello

        No wonder. ?

      • slumbrew

Bruh, Tempted is Blue-Eyed Soul. Which is a category.*

Next you’ll be saying intemperate things about The Style Council.

        * also, maybe New Wave. Also a category.

      • Frnxt Ghrt Digby Gurm

Now, see, Slum–that was so much better than that warbling mess. It had some style.

There is no way in Satan’s Hell that Tempted is “blue-eyed soul”. If that’s what it officially gets labeled, it’s no wonder the Blacks hate the Whites.

      • slumbrew

Oh, you done did it now.

Going totally off topic, that phrase reminds me of a hip-hop video by a WWE star that I find shockingly enjoyable

I stopped renting my attached apartment in January because I feared this situation was going to get out of hand. Sadly it appears that the situation dropped out of hand, was kicked while trying to pick it, and is now circling the storm drain before getting flushed out to sea.

I know several other people who did the same thing in early 2020. How many of these units will come back into Oahu’s tight rental market is anybody’s guess. My money is on a 33-40% drop in 2021 and it will last multiple years.

As a landlord who has had to evict deadbeat tenants in the past, I have sympathy for people in true need, but at some point, you have to own up to your obligations. Nothing is free in this world, and landlords have to deal with crazy shit all the time. I basically had a shitty tenant’s damage to my property eat the entirety of their annual rent once.

      • Gender Traitor

…and the CDC is now in charge of the country and has picked you to lose.

    • Gustave Lytton

I was going to respond to Bruschettawad when this post dropped.

Yeah, renter in a tight place through no fault of their own are in a shit sandwich, but forcing it uphill doesn’t make it taste any better or go down easier. All this does is a) halt price discovery and downward pressure on lowering rents and b) creates incentives to take housing units off the market & cut costs (repairs, maintenance, and upkeep). Those will linger longer than any eviction freeze.

      • Gustave Lytton

And, the sort of tenant that needs to be evicted to leave a unit is least likely to be a fine upstanding person who takes good care of the place.

      • Frnxt Ghrt Digby Gurm

Proving once again that landlords are evil and private property is a myth propped up by raysis.

      • Brochettaward

Like it or not, landlords are not a particularly well liked class of people in this country.

I’d like to think that decent landlords are treating decent tenants in a rough spot correctly on their own through self-interest and some amount of compassion. I don’t believe it is the government’s role to intervene regardless. But good luck finding a politician who will support that and who can win elections.

      • Frnxt Ghrt Digby Gurm

But good luck finding a politician

Screw dat–got enough of ’em in my life.

      • Overt

My M/F In-laws have several properties adjacent to theirs. They have kept rent steady for years because they feel it is better to have a tenant paying $100/mo less in rent, than spending 3 months trying to fill a vacancy. They are friendly with their renters, and my F-I-Law is still the guy who goes over to fix their plumbing and sprinklers. They have done their best to work with their renters on a structure that will work.

This is, to be frank, a nut punch. At any point these renters could say that they aren’t going to pay. My in-laws would have worked with them to try and keep them in their homes, but now, these renters could just say “F-U I am not paying anything” and my in-laws would have no recourse.

To me, this is the worst sort of pandering, and even my sympathy for Trump leaves me feeling like this is a huge f-u to the property owners who have tended to support him.

      • mrfamous

Yeah, ultimately this is bad for tenants too.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

And for buildings, just like rent control.

Had another meal out in a sit down restaurant without having to wear a mask. Place opened during all this shit. Stopped in today for lunch. Staff was wearing masks, because state mandate, but no guests were. Overpaid for a mediocre fajita meal, but it was nice just to do it.

    • CPRM

I’m confused, Wisconsin’s lock downs ended because the State Supreme court said the gov couldn’t declare a state of emergency for more than 30 days, yet this mask mandate is starting it’s second month. The rules don’t matter anymore. Political Thunderdome.

    • db

Here in Western PA, none of the counties (except Allegheny) are enforcing this. It’s mostly the private business owners mandating masks out of fear for their licenses. Staff in restaurants wear masks, but none of the diners do. The servers love customers and are just glad we’re coming out to eat. Basically the only places people wear masks here are in stores where the state could potentially revoke a business license. But as far as I can tell, most police and sheriff’s departments here are refusing to enforce the state requirements. Some stores post a sign saying the Governor has “requested” you wear a mask, but they will respect your choice to disobey (usually phrased as “respecting your privacy”).

    • Sean

      Sorry, but not really.

A lifetime ago, I was a huge fan of Pearly Baker’s Alehouse. They aren’t open for lunch most days though.

Been grooving on Prime steakhouse in Bethlehem recently though.

I’m seeing another one of those commercials frequently today (remember when channels used to rotate through more than two or three different commercials?) where shoppers and shopkeepers are all happily masked up and doing commerce like everything’s just peachy keen. I wish they would stop normalizing this shit. I don’t want to see another fucking mask in a fucking commercial.

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (which I had not watched since I was a child) is secretly a very intelligent movie. And, even if inadvertently, it raises some interesting questions. Genghis Khan is a historical figure that its ok to joke about, but the movie knew enough to stay away from, say, Hitler.

    • Frnxt Ghrt Digby Gurm

I don’t think the SDHS class of ’88, or ’89 was very interested in hearing from Hitler. Or, him to speak to them, since their football rules, and is a threat to his Reich.

      • Frnxt Ghrt Digby Gurm

Faux pas time–I remember going with my broseph to see B&TEA when it was released as a sneak preview, complete with surveys afterwards. We drove around laughing our proverbial asses off, afterwards.

And then I think about how Underworld stared out like this.

I’m betting only Rhywun knows that one.

      • KSuellington

I saw that a couple weeks after it opened after taking a half eighth of mushrooms at the Kabuki in SF. This was the best Underworld song on the soundtrack.

      • slumbrew

That’s a fantastic track & one I still listen to.

I, too, saw the film in SF when I was visiting my sister – it took us about 15 minutes for our brains to start interpreting the Scots accents correctly. We then laughed for the rest of the movie (other than at the horrible parts, of course. Poor Tommy).

Drudge is currently running with headlines related to Melania Trump. One on her having a private email server (like this is comparable to Hillary having one as Secretary of State), and another on why one of her backstabbing aides was recording her. Like, who gives a fuck?

Drudge has lost his god damn mind.

    • slumbrew

Drudge, as in Matt, sold the site last year. He’s currently swimming around in his Scrooge McDuckian cash vault.

      • Brochettaward

It would have to be the quietest sale in history. But it would make sense. I mean, the guy has either lost his god damn mind over Covid and Trump or it’s not him running things anymore.

      • Brochettaward

If you did buy Drudge, you’d want to keep it quiet. So I won’t dismiss that out of hand. But I think it’d be tough over the long term. And the reports on this seem old already. And how fucking hard is it to run the Drudge Report? Maybe he sold just because the offer was too good. I don’t know. But the site is different and not in a good way.

      • slumbrew

Matt himself is mid-50’s now and may just be tired of it all. The deal was probably a big pile of cash + an NDA. He probably assumed readers would catch on to any ideological shift and/or he just couldn’t care about anyone who didn’t notice.

        All supposition, of course.

      • slumbrew

It was indeed quiet, but it’s been kicked around for a bit now; Drudge himself gave a “no comment” a while back, which would seem to be a yes. As you say, it makes a ton of sense – the tone shift has been obvious.

    • KSuellington

Drudge is now a leftist news aggregator site, has been for awhile.

  15. UnCivilServant

My first half day of Crusader Kings 3 impressions – Your enjoyment will be based upon how much you enjoyed Crusader Kings 2. The biggest difference in how it plays is in shifting around the UI. During this mod-free phase, I have an ironman game going on starting in Celyon in the earliest start year, I took the Maldives and just got my first foothold on the subcontinent. I plan to take the rest of Kerala then focus on economic improvements. I’ve weakened the Raj of the region enough that I can do it once my truce runs out.

In my “No achievements” game played somewhat in parallel, I made the most insane custom faith I could manage to see how far I could push it. For some reason my neighbord are afraid of that character. Might have something to do with the human sacrifice and ritual cannibalism… nah.

    • Urthona

I immediately got my ass kicked. A bit rusty.

      • UnCivilServant

I had one of those sessions. Norse count on the tip of Brittany. Doomed from the time I picked the character. It’s a no-win starting position unless you cheat.

      • UnCivilServant

Actually, now that I think about it, if he immediately grabbed a catholic concubine and converted, he could have bought enough time to try to do something. Might end up losing independance and being a vassal of the king of brittany, but that’s not a game over.

      • UnCivilServant

Damn, not I have to try it and see if I can get away with it…

      • UnCivilServant

Yup, it’s doable. Now he isn’t dead, and has a decent chance of having a dynasty.

    • hayeksplosives

Lol. He finally got going at 6 minute mark on the commentary.

The whole ride video was great. “Black guy in a Tesla—you goin’ to jail.”

      • Frnxt Ghrt Digby Gurm

Gotta say–for anyone in his (former) camp re: things like owning a Tesla, that’s a good sell video.

      • hayeksplosives

He makes a good point distinguishing Tesla subsidies (paid back early with internet) compared to the Big Three ICE vehicle companies, who still owe BIllions.

As for the Green aspect, that was never really the main goal for Elon. He wants to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and also get out there with self driving cars, maybe even ride share ones.

The computers developed for Tesla are ridiculously powerful.

As is the Tesla itself. It’s damned easy to speed to 90-100mph and not notice because the car isn’t strained or whiny, not shuddering and oh so quiet. Today I had to call loudly to the security guard at the tent to the work parking lot so he could take my temperature today on the way in. He didn’t hear the Tesla 10 feet from him.

      • Frnxt Ghrt Digby Gurm

How easy is it to keep yours charged sufficiently? They do require special outlets, do they not?

      • thepasswordispassword

The biggest issue I heard about them was that they had some issues with fit and finish. Things like panels not quite fitting right which can make those 90-100mph drives a bit louder that you’d like. A mix of not using conventional hardware development processes so QA is less consistent and the actual design of the frame and panels being more complicated than a traditional vehicle manufacturer (I remember a not entirely fair complaint about total number of fasteners and the diversity of size and type of fasteners) so more places to screw up. Minor criticism in the long run compared to having a space car.

Still will never convince the curmudgeons who like mechanical feel though. Even though most would be hypocrites with their ABS and their EFI. They might even have ESC!

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

5G has very limited range compared to 4G so they have to install more, smaller towers in order to get coverage.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

And I guarantee the building owner is collecting rent on that installation.

      • Festus' Mustache

Well that’s a given. It’s just that some people are still freaked out about high-tension lines and say nothing about cel towers getting installed upstairs.

How convenient that we now have a handy excuse to drone on about the dIgItAl DiViDe.

    • Frnxt Ghrt Digby Gurm

In rare instances, the live polio virus in the oral vaccine can mutate into a form capable of sparking new outbreaks.

“Be sure to not catch Polio with this medicine…..unless, the medicine gives it to you.”

      • Rhywun

“Symptoms include dry mouth and polio. Call your doctor if you can’t walk.”

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

And they wonder why people don’t trust them.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Whatever they come out with Imma wait a couple of months and see how many people do/don’t get majorly screwed up.

      • Gender Traitor

        Let Gates take it first.

    • Fourscore

No mask, shoes or shirt, sorry, you’ll have to leave

      • Festus' Mustache

America don’t trust Bear! Bear is Asshoe!

  19. Festus' Mustache

White girl in the comic is HM thicc.

    • TARDIS

If you can clearly see her hand and butt crack, what could we see from the front?

    • Gender Traitor

Is this a tiny light in the midst of the darkness (yeah, yeah, I know – dark/light metaphors “problematic”) or is this guy even worse?

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

He seems to be the choice of the AOC types so I’d guess worse. I’ll take corrupt womanizing alcoholic over commie-lite and not so lite any day.

      • Gender Traitor

        Bernie’s cousin, maybe?

      • Festus' Mustache

Markey is a Commie but it’s nice to know that the flickering Kennedy flame has been snuffed for another cycle.

      • Festus' Mustache

No fear, the other one with the “Lion’s Mane” of hair will soon step unto the breach.

      • Rhywun

        *swoon*

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        And a complete, pandering douchebag.

  20. Gender Traitor

This is one of the reasons Tom T has forbidden me from joining Glibzoom chats. : (

    • westernsloper

Mehh, sounds like they weren’t using a passcode. I am not too worried about it. Other Zoom participants are in the biz and they don’t seem concerned.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

Oh no, they showed a swastika. I think I would die from fright.

“No one should have to experience such blatant acts of hatred,” the social media post said.”

So some douche with an internet connection hijacked a frat Zoom meeting and trolled them with swastikas.

IT’S JUST MORE OF TRUMP’S AMERIKKKA.

I’m sure everyone who even heard about it needed therapy for PTSD afterwards. I know I do.

      • Rhywun

I think I would die from fright.

No, but you’ll probably get canceled and lose your job. Welcome to current year.

    • Tulip

      We use a waiting room

      • Festus' Mustache

Yeah, there are no dick-pics. Everything under the desk is the Wild West, though.

    • Festus' Mustache

Kitteh! My namesake is doing better but I’ve watched this play out too many times. Sure has gotten even sweeter since we started drugging him and I didn’t believe that was possible. My poor feller. He’s a cat but it will be a nut-punch when he goes. The last one we said goodbye to was nearly 20. Imma cry like a baby. We’ll wait a bit and get two more kittens, as God intended.

      • Festus' Mustache

They probably won’t even let us in the room when they do the deed. I wonder how many of the elderly have died scared and alone since this bullshit started. Sure, Granny is going to die but why does she have to among strangers without a family member to hold her hand? This shit is evil. They are grooming us for what they believe is sure to come.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      Only if you’re not Antifa

      • Festus' Mustache

*Furiously starts scrubbing Glib accounts from lap-top and phone, gives up and hurls computer, phone and himself off the bridge*

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      Best comment:

      “The peacefulness is intensifying”

    • PieInTheSky

if they did not burn it down what is even the point?

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        So impatient.

These things take time to develop as the mob gains more and more chutzpah.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

In other words, we’re not quite at the Romanian revolution stage yet.

    • Not an Economist

Use of unnecessary violence is authorized now.

    • Rhywun

What is the extreme far-right-wing Rethuglican’s name?

      • Festus' Mustache

Does it matter? They are eating their own and “voting” Day is still two months hence.

  21. TARDIS

I’m passing around the graphic above as a crew briefing. Now people are running around saying, “Smell my finger.”

    • Festus' Mustache

That’s how you do it! Insert Robert Redford GIF.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      We have the worst revolutionaries.

      • Festus' Mustache

It was worse than when his his Grandpa started calling him a “Nancy”! He just couldn’t EVEN…

      • Sean

Would you prefer them to actually be scary?

      • Festus' Mustache

Like bomb-setting and snipering and the like? Fuck no! They’re moving in that direction which is worrisome but they still seem to be a tiny minority getting an out sized bit of attention. I mean, look at that guy… Most of them seem to be just like him.
