I know I called this a links post, but I just finished up a week long conference an hour ago, so this is self-service. Also, completely unrelated to the lack of links herein, OMWC was quite put out that I was “taking all the good links” for my post.
Have a great Saturday night! Or don’t, I’m not your boss, Mom or wife. (Nor would I want to be. I know how you people are.)
Wait, you ARE my wife!
I especially know how you are.
Get a room.
And then wildly do it!
WOOOOOOOOOO!!!
So wrong.
C.
Seconded
Well fuck 2020.
Toots Hibbert is dead.
Take a music link if you don’t know who he is.
Gah, Reggae. an trigger warning would be nice. RIP none the less.
He was the frontman for Toots and the Maytals, I got the chance to see him once back in the late 90’s/early 00’s. He was moving and dancing the whole hour long set.
Perhaps a cover of Country Roads would be more your speed?
A reggae version of a country song is still reggae! Look, I was trapped in the back seat for a car trip to the finger lakes and the two stoners up front wouldn’t take Bob Marley’s greatest hits out of the cassette player the entire 7+ hours. Reggae gives me PTSD.
Oh damn. Any album repeated that many times would cause me to rage.
That cover is superior to the original.
You could have hovered over the first link.
NOOO!!!!!
I saw Toots and the Maytals once about ten years ago. It was a good show.
Wasn’t he one of the Cosby Uncles?
Why not all five?
He’s not an overachiever.

Wut?
“New Hampshire’s first trans, anarchist, Satanic candidate for county sheriff says she’s not getting a lot of support from the Republican Party.”
OK?
So… anarchist running for office? Is she going to tear down the government from the inside?
Yes, apparently.
A sheriff who’s not a fan of anarchy? Shocking!
See, it always confounds me when they say “trans” and then say “she.” At that point, I’m lost, man, woman, who the fuck knows? The answer? Post up a pic. That’s a man, baby! Dafuq is a trans man? Is it a man or a woman pretending to be one? Dunno. If the pic has a 5 o’clock shadow and an adam’s apple, it becomes clear.
Who the fuck cares.
Its not as difficult as you think.
– A transwoman can be explained as such: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf0oXY4nDxE
– A transman is simply the reverse.
What if they’re also non-binary, gender queer?
Show your math.
Lessee, carry the one, carry the zero, dammit, there’s gotta be more than just ones and zeros…
I think at this point we are up to needing the Mayan sexagesimal numeration to track genders.
Yep. Ran unopposed.
“Melania and Donald Trump’s marriage is a ‘transactional deal’ where he gets ‘arm candy’ and she gets security, first lady’s former best friend claims”
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8726253/Melania-Donald-Trumps-marriage-transactional-deal-ladys-former-best-friend-claims.html
So a marriage?
I guess we know why it’s a former best friend.
Ooh ooh, now do the Clintons.
That was pure unadulterated love.
No, there was plenty of adultery involved.
That’s sort of what I was trying to do there…
Adulterated love
It is important to love your taint.
And if you can’t be
With the one you taint, honey
Taint the one you’re with
Unadulterated love
Ted S., are you feeling well recently? You’ve recently been picking songs I liked in my youth, and it’s scaring me.
What percent of marriages score “arm candy” like that?
Ones in which the guy is a billionaire?
“So a marriage?”
best possible answer. Close the thread.
lol they’re not even trying any more
Ohhh, so that’s why the model married the billionaire.
Thanks for clearing that up.
I forgot. I was canning pickles.
Lame excuse.
And we don’t believe you.
I believe him.
Canning pickles is a euphemism, right?
Pickles is his sister in law.
Pickles is a dog name
Pickles was the name of Buddy’s (Morey Amsterdam) wife on The Dick Van Dyke show. She was one of those sitcom characters who never appeared on camera.
Was that because she got canned?
Yes. Pickles is the name of a relative, whom he is beating with a cane.
Man, you weren’t even trying with that euphemism.
Caning the Pickle is a new one.
Nice.
Is that an anal reference since the pickle goes in the can? I’m trying to keep up with the memes.
euphemism?
Damn it. Lets try it again,
euphemism?
OUCH!
Cucumber?
Yes. I get enough yield that I do them every other year.

“Vaping DOES raise the risk of breast cancer, warn scientists amid concerns that young women are ‘targeted by E-cigarette companies’
The US team carried out tests on female mice, some kept in fresh air, others exposed to e-cigarette vapour. After a fortnight, all were injected with breast cancer. At the end of six weeks, tumours had grown almost twice as fast in the mice exposed to the vapour.”

So if you are a mouse, don’t vape.
You ever try and explain life before all this wackiness? Try telling a kid how there wasn’t any safety seals on foods back in the day. Explain how nobody had a portable phone and they sold extra long cords so you could pace the room while talking. How about getting no answer when you called? You’d just try back later, unless they had one of those rich people tape recorders on their phone. How about explaining that all the kids ( or, at least most of them) would go home and then hang out in the general area until mom/dad got off work around 7 p.m. When I was a kid, safety was for sissies. Hell, most foods didn’t even have a “use by” date!
Or the wall phone had to be cranked by hand, a long crank was a 1, 2 long cranks was a 2, switching to shorts cranks after a long crank was for the second digit and vice versa. Our number was 15, 1 long and 5 shorts.. 5 longs and 1 short = 51. Small subscriber base, can’t remember how many. I think 1 long reached the switch board and she could call other locals.
Didn’t need a use by date, food didn’t last that long if there were kids in the family.
Was it a party line?
Yes, with about 20 subscribers, classified info was never discussed. Pretty much everyone knew all but the darkest secrets of the others.
Later, after I left home my folks got dial up with 3 other parties, only 1 phone rang but if you picked up the phone there may be someone already using the line. I think most people picked up the phone quietly and listened (and listened) before they tried to use it.
It was sort of funny. I’d get on the phone with my GF and you could tell when one of the old maid biddies had picked up, I mean you could hear them pick up and then try to muffle the receiver so you couldn’t hear them.
I’d just say, well I’m not going to talk about this when some old bag is listening. I even heard them forget what was happening and ‘gasp’ at that a couple of times, lol.
I really wanted to say ‘hey old bag, this is the reason you’ve never actually had sex before!’. But those were more polite times.
And BTW, that’s not an exaggeration and I have no disclaimer.
If you are a woman, don’t let people inject you with breast cancer.
And don’t inject yourself with breast cancer.
That seems like it is pretty close to Life Rule 1.
^this.
That has to be the most ridiculous thing I’ve read.

I don’t know.
I’m not sure why I would suspect that. I mean antifa have never set any fires before. Just wondering.
Looking through the pictures, the first guy definitely is.
Second guy just looks like a hillhippy who was probably high.
The lady looks like she’s part of one of those union agitator groups, so probably antifa light.
The 500k number is approximately the number under an type of evacuation order, mostly at Level 1 Be Ready. Actual evacuation Level 3 Go Now is about a tenth of that number. The state walked back the hyperbole number shortly after getting questioned and refused to explain how they arrived at the number.

As is the tradition. I’ll kick of a Zoom Virtual Happy Hour tonight at 20:00 Eastern. Maybe if I put Zoom in the post, people will stop asking about it later in the thread.
/expects people to ask about it later in the thread.
I won’t be on tonight. Live music at one of the local brewpubs.
Thanks for setting these up. I made last night’s pretty late.
We’ll try to drop by before I get into intensive prep for dinner.
I admit I’m curious about these, but frankly, don’t trust Zoom.
It’s perfectly safe as long as you use clean needles.
As opposed to every other privacy violation platform?
Fuck it. We’re all on the list already. Go see your friends in all their…uh…glory.
lol…….glory is one way to put it.
Don’t go down that rabbit hole.
If you’ve got a preferred meeting platform, I’m open to changing. I’ve had a lot less issues with Zoom then WebEx, and I doubt that everyone here has a Google account to do a Google Meet, I’m even more doubtful that everyone has a Microsoft account to do a Teams meeting.
On the application side, you can always sandbox it if you’re concerned about it accessing other files. I’ve never seen any reports of that. Most of the reported “security holes” that were reported early were things like allowing local links as URLs in the chat, unwanted people joining public meetings, and weak encryption for meetings without a paid account.
I don’t want China watching me caning pickles.
*canning
Zoom sucks. I guess people use it because you can put more faces on the screen at one time?
Both Skype and MS Teams are superior in every way in my experience. You can’t even do a virtual background with Zoom without a green screen? A green screen? WTF? This is 2020!
How many people use cameras? I’m not really likely to show my face, simply because I work for a company that, while not explicitly woke, has some folks in positions of real power that would not hesistate to ruin someone’s career for being associated with wrongthink.
plus, I only have a camera on my work laptop
Depends on the people. Some people put on cameras, others do not, others put up pictures as their image. You’ll get the chance to see a bunch of middle aged white guys though.
HAWT.
I still haven’t figured out how to put up a picture. I’ve RTFM (such as it is) and I still have no clue — half of the controls they reference in the docs don’t even show up on my screen.
I am required to show my face in some work meetings. That’s the only reason I have a camera. But Zoom annoys me because our flat is almost entirely open and I hate having some inquisitive person always saying ‘are those your tomato plants?’. No, someone else decided to plant some tomato plants on my deck and I decided to keep them. ‘Oh, is that your robovac just went by back there, he he’. No, that was my home killer robot with twin missile launchers. G’damnit, who wants to buy a giant plastic canvas to prop up behind your chair when every other app does not need one of those? And I keep having to tell my wife, hey I’m on Zoom, please do not walk through here naked, OK?
pics or it didn’t happen.
MS Teams are superior in every way in my experience.
Now you’re just trolling.
Well, we coulnd’t get the damn thing to work, so it saved us from a meeting.
I’m not trolling, I’m serious. I especially like the screen sharing, because I am sometimes logged into several RDP and VPN sessions at the same time, and when I want to share it will allow me to pick only that VPN or RDP window without having to show my entire desktop and alt+ctrl around.
Both WebEx and Zoom let you share a single window as well. I do it on a regular basis for work. Fuck you am I sharing my full desktop.
I’ve never seen that choice on Zoom. Might just not be looking in the right place, but it’s very obvious on Teams.
I’ve done it.
Yeah, I think it’s platform dependent. I know it works on Windows and Mac but not Linux, not sure about the web client or mobile devices.
How? I can’t do it on Win 10. Are you using a 3rd party app?
Go to the video settings (either in the client, or in a meeting by clicking the arrow point up in the video icon), Select Background & Filters, and select one of the pre-canned ones or add any image you want as a background. It helps if your background contrasts with what you’re wearing. Since I’m generally wearing a black t-shirt, in a room with a dark background, I can become a floating head.
“dark background”
I don’t have that, and I’m doing exactly what you just said. I tried it a while, it’s just a mess. I gave up. It’s extremely easy on Skype and Teams.
No. Zoom on Mac.
To be fair, the button that allows you to select a background has vanished – but if you hover the mouse where it used to be, a tooltip pops up and you can click there.
Both Skype and MS Teams are superior in every way in my experience. You can’t even do a virtual background with Zoom without a green screen? A green screen? WTF? This is 2020!
I don’t hate Teams, but Skype? Really? Assuming that I can actually stay connected to the meeting, Skype has the nasty habit of dropping sharing or video or audio for the hell of it.
Also, green screen is optional for virtual backgrounds on zoom.
“Also, green screen is optional for virtual backgrounds on zoom.”
I can’t make it work.
Also, never had had Skype drop a connection, and I’ve used it for years.
You don’t need a green screen anymore for Zoom, they gave you the option to have a virtual background without a green screen months ago. Just toggle the option on the virtual background page under settings.
Webex, however, still doesn’t have a virtual background option, green screen or not. I hate webex meetings for that reason…. I’d prefer people not see the cluttered shelves behind me.
Does anybody have the link to the online Zoom meeting thingy? /s
Seriously, thank you for setting up these happy hours, Nephilium. It’s been a treat to commiserate with fellow Glibertarians through the magic of audio and/or video chats.
That chatting with Glibs gives me hope… I’m off to contemplate this on the Tree of Woe. ?
I hope it is c or b.
Why not both?
I couldn’t find the ‘all of the above’ radio button, so was unable to participate.

Healthy at any size is bunk, but this guy is proof you can be fat and strong:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Ross
GET IN MAH BELLY!
Later tonight, I will try to lift an Atlas stone. Based on the diameter, it probably weighs about 150 pounds.
Lifting stones have proud history:
***
In Iceland, lifting stones were traditionally used to qualify men for work on fishing boats. One such set of stones can be found on the beach of Djúpalónssandur at the foot of Snæfellsjökull. Another set can be found at Hvallátur. To qualify, a man would have to lift at least the hálfdrættingur stone to hip-height onto a ledge. Lifting heavier stones would entitle the man to a greater share of the catch.
The stones at Djúpalónssandur are classified as:
amlóði (“useless”) at 23 kg (50.7 pounds)
hálfdrættingur (“weakling”) at 54 kg (119 pounds)
hálfsterkur (“half strength”) at 100 kg (220.5 pounds)
fullsterkur (“full strength”) weighing 154 kg (339.5 pounds)
One of the most famous Icelandic stones is the Húsafell Stone which weighs 186 kg (410 lb).
***
That’s a hell of job interview.
“Very nice, Mr. Magnusson. What very heavy stones do you see yourself lifting in 5 years?”
***
The Húsafell Stone is a lifting stone located in Húsafell, Iceland.[1] The stone weighs 186 kg (409 lb)[1] and was kept near a sheep pen built by reverend Snorri Björnsson over two hundred years ago.[1]
The stone has been used as a test of strength by either simply lifting the stone, or by lifting and carrying the stone around the goat pen where it is located. The Húsafell Stone is known as pen slab (Kvíahellan) in Iceland, as it was used as a door to the sheep pens.[1] Someone who could only lift the stone up to their knees would be lazybones,[a] those who could lift it up to the waist would be considered half-strong,[b] and a full-strong[c] could lift it up to the breast and walk with it around the perimeter of the sheep pen.[2]

“I will lift the world stone and the sky will tremble.”
Fat and strong. Yes, you can. Look at all the NFL backs and power lifters who are fat.
But that doesn’t mean being fat is good for your long term health. It isn’t. How many really old fat people have you seen? Most older people who are still active, are not fat, most are very slim.
You can be fat and strong. You cannot be fat and healthy. Different metrics.
“…proof you can be fat and strong…”
That’s what I keep telling myself.
I saw a documentary once about a Hawaiian Sumo wrestler. He was fat but also amazingly fast and really strong.
Right up until he died from a massive heart attack.
‘Nearly half’ of CNN’s GOP commentators are backing Biden, report finds
The network has very few on-air contributors who support President Trump

Great job, Team Red. Way to stick together.
“CNN’s GOP commentators”
lol
“Your turn in the barrel, bitchez.”
Yeah, “nearly half” is surprisingly low for that group.
I don’t know who they are, but I have noticed that everytime CNN start about how GOP members support Biden, it’s always the same people, Mittens and that type. It’s why I laughed at the term “CNN’s GOP commentators”.
Might was well say ‘The NYT’s constitutionalist advisory panel’.
I would think that you would rather *not* have CNN’s “GOP commentators” on your side.
They failed when they took jobs at CNN. It’s shocking that half of them would consider not backing Biden. Question is: What do you call it when half of the libertarian ticket backs Hillary? And, what if the other half backs forced cake baking?
“half of the libertarian ticket backs Hillary”
You mean the cocktail party gang over at TOS? That’s why the LP is a bad joke.
I did finally check out this JoJo gorgen whatever. Commie light? If we needed commie lite, we already had Tulsi and she’s got nice tits! Tulsi’s tits for LP candidate 2024!

It is sad that I can’t say I unabashedly support her though. Fucking LP.
Current Affairs makes a good point for once. Turns out that Atlantic twit was a big-time war monger. And it got him ponies. For real.

With so many morally monstrous characters strutting about, it’s hard to take the one hundred thousandth declaration of Mr. Trump’s supposed singular moral horror very seriously. This is especially true considering who is usually making the charges. Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of the Atlantic and the author of the “suckers and losers” report, was “one of the leading media cheerleaders for the attack on Iraq,” loudly trumpeting falsehoods–including the outrageous claim that Saddam Hussein had ties to Al Qaeda–used to justify the invasion and destruction of that nation. Goldberg was rewarded for his criminal journalistic malpractice with lavish enticements to join the Atlantic which reportedly included gifts of ponies for Goldberg’s children. The former Israeli prison guard, who even conservative hawk Andrew Sullivan has mocked as a mouthpiece for Bibi Netanyahu, has since continued to serve as flatter-in-chief for the violent imperial urges of the day, and as court scribe writing with grandiosity about the “Obama Doctrine.”

On question of “Congress shall make no law”, there’s a great essay called The Myth of the Rule of Law
synopsis from Mises
***
For example, despite the US Constitution’s very clear language in most of its passages (there are some dangerously vague sections, of course), the most trained and brilliant legal minds can come to completely opposite conclusions over the exact same clause. Whether it is a particular amendment in the Bill of Rights or the particular language of executive or legislative power, a liberal and conservative judge could use sound reasoning and cite historical precedent to make their case — and they would both be right. “[B]ecause the law consists of contradictory rules and principles,” argues John Hasnas, “sound legal arguments will be available for all legal conclusions, and hence, the normative predispositions of the decision makers, rather than the law itself, determine the outcome of cases.”
The law, then, is not a neutral body of rules to help keep order and govern society; it is merely an opinion with a gun. Whenever the state is in charge of anything, the outcomes, process, and administration are always political in nature. There can never be a system of definite, consistent rules that produce determinate results because these laws, no matter how they are written, will always be subjected to the biases, prejudices, and discrimination of those who interpret and enforce them.
***
Hasnas uses the example of music. Is it speech? Strictly speaking, no. Singing is not the same as talking. So one could argue that the govt does have the power to regulate music.
the kill shot
***
In fact, I dare say I can read your thoughts. You are thinking that even if I have shown that the
present legal system is somewhat indetenninate, I certainly have not shown that the law is
inherently political. Although you may agree that the law as presently constituted is too vague or
contains too many contradictions, you probably believe that this state of affairs is due to the
actions of the liberal judicial activists, or the Reaganite adherents of the doctrine of original intent,
or the self-serving politicians, or the (feel free to fill in your favorite candidate for the group
that is responsible for the legal system’s ills) However, you do not believe that the law must be
this way, that it can never be definite and politically neutral. You believe that the law can be
reformed; that to bring about an end to political strife and institute a true rule of law, we merely
need to create a legal system comprised of consistent rules that are expressed in clear, definite
language.
It is my sad duty to inform you that this cannot be done. Even with all the good will in the
world, we could not produce such a legal code because there is simply no such thing as
uninterpretable language.
***
Maybe we need a compile-able deterministic symbolic language for laws to produce consistent interpretations. And make sure you use a code that allows for proofs.
“Whenever the state is in charge of anything, the outcomes, process, and administration are always political in nature.”
Replace “the state” with “the home owners’ association”, “the mob” or “mom and dad” and it’s still true.
As I recall, Herbert makes a point similar to this in Dune – that a system of law that was truly objective/not-subject-to-interpretation would be oppressive beyond anyone’s ability to tolerate. Such a system would certainly have no room for mercy – and yet we consider that a fairly important element within justice.
This to my mind has always been the fundamental flaw in anarchist thinking – no really better way of handling human conflict.
so many to pick from:
***
“All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible.”
― Frank Herbert
…
“Among my father’s most important messages were that governments lie to protect themselves and they make incredibly stupid decisions. Years after the publication of Dune, Richard M. Nixon provided ample proof. Dad said that Nixon did the American people an immense favor in his attempt to cover up the Watergate misdeeds. By amplified example, albeit unwittingly, the thirty-seventh president of the United States taught people to question their leaders. In interviews and impassioned speeches on university campuses all across the country, Frank Herbert warned young people not to trust government, telling them that the American founding fathers had understood this and had attempted to establish safeguards in the Constitution.”
― Frank Herbert
…
“The convoluted wording of legalisms grew up around the necessity to hide from ourselves the violence we intend toward each other. Between depriving a man of one hour from his life and depriving him of his life there exists only a difference of degree. You have done violence to him, consumed his energy. Elaborate euphemisms may conceal your intent to kill, but behind any use of power over another the ultimate assumption remains: “I feed on your energy.”
― Frank Herbert

This shows up here every once in awhile. Which is a good thing.
This should be read by everyone every couple of years.
Nothing could be clearer, less ambiguous than “… shall not be abridged” yet how many volumes have been written to “interpret’ these four simple words?
This seems pretty clear!
Believe it or not, that essay may have been my first real introduction to the concept of libertarianism. If I remember correctly, he ends the piece by making a strong philosophical argument for Anarcho-capitalism. I didn’t agree with him completely on that, I think in many ways that theory is as willfully blind to human nature as communism. However, it did steer me towards the NAP and helped settle me on the quasi-minarchist views I currently hold.
Good find!
I tried posting this in the dead thread, but it was dead. But I just find it too interesting.
Anyone ever hear about this?
Mysterious mounds of the Aisle of Pines
I found this interesting because unlike a lot of there ‘mysteries’, this one has apparently not been solved.
I read that entire article and there’s been no shortage of far fetched theories thrown out by serious researchers.
To my untrained eye, those just scream ‘100% natural origin’, IOW, no people involved with that. No tools or anything associated with human activity ever found around them.
Also, they just look natural, like no sort of pattern that would show human intention. They’re just randomly located.
My guess, some sort of ancient extinct plant or tree, or that with some sort of organism involved. Like ancient trees destroyed by some infestation of something and that’s what left. The so called ‘concrete’ is just some sort of natural concretions.
Looks just like the Mima Mounds near Tacoma, Washington.

Interesting to watch how people used to be able to have fun without burning shit down and looting. I wonder if it will be remembered in the history books?
There will be no books but White Fragility in CommaLa’s USA.
C’mon! We have the unique opportunity to watch BOTH Steven King’s the Stand AND Lord of the Flies played out in real time! What a time to be alive!
Part three is gonna be Red Dawn.
I just watched the 1990s miniseries of The Stand on Blu-Ray. It holds up pretty well.
The Stand is King’s best film. I love that film.
He got woke and started sucking badly after that. He sold out to the woketards. That made for TV movie Under the Dome is the worst horseshit I have ever seen. The novel was not bad, they totally ruined it. I can’t see how King didn’t hide his face in shame over that. I haven’t even tried to read anything by him since then.
I was (like most fans) utterly disappointed in the Dark Tower series post-book 3. Wizard and Glass sucked, sucked, sucked and I stopped reading there.
Yeah, Book IV bored the everloving shit out of me. Made it maybe a third in, put it down, and never went back to the series.
The first three are masterpieces. Especially Wastelands.
Yeah, you’re all right, it went downhill with Wizard and Glass. I made it through, but was bored.
I even made it to Wolves of the Calla, and was like ‘what the fuck am I reading? I didn’t sign up for this’, and that was it.
Yep, I loved esp. II and III.

DiMezzo said in her blog post that her victory in the primary was an argument for anarchism because of how “clueless the average voter is.” She garnered 4,211 votes, easily beating a traditional candidate who received only a few hundred votes, election results show.
“Sweet Satan, how can you not be an anarchist?!” she wrote. “Between 75 and 80 percent of the primary voters — the ones alleged to be more politically aware than the average voter — were completely and totally ignorant of who they were voting for! What is the percentage with the average voter? 90 percent? 95 percent? These people are deciding who gets to rule you,” she said, before calling on Cheshire County to secede from both New Hampshire and the U.S.

Oh, how I laughed.
She kinda has a point…
I take it that the GOP has given up that race.
What is this “Mountain Dew Zero” and why would the store think it’s an acceptable substitute for my Diet Mountain Dew order?
It’s the same thing. They just changed the name to make it more appealing for men, because diet soda is for womenfolk. Usually.
The ingredient list doesn’t even come close to being the same.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mountain_Dew_flavors_and_varieties#Current
***
A low-calorie variant first introduced in 1988.[2] It was formerly known as “Sugar-Free Mountain Dew” until 1986, when it was given its current name. In 2006 Diet Mountain Dew was reformulated with a new “Tuned Up Taste”, using a blend of sucralose, aspartame, and acesulfame potassium as sweeteners. The previous formulation was sweetened exclusively with aspartame.[3]
…
A no-calorie variant introduced in 2020, intended to more closely replicate the taste of regular Mountain Dew than Diet Mountain Dew.
***
But the 2006 Diet formulation tastes better.
I’m just going to back away slowly now.
The fuck? Not only is Mountain Dew ancient, but the sugar-free variety is older than I am?
The wiki entries can’t even decide when diet was introduced, or when the name change happened, so I can’t count on the accuracy of the page.
When I was a kid, I had it in the green bottles with the guy with a ceramic jug in his hand. It was awful, nothing but neon green colored corn syrup and some weird flavor. I hated it, but lots of guys drank it, probably for all that sugar and caffeine.
Then came Jolt cola. After that it was ” Mountain who?”
I’d’ve sworn it came out in middle school in the late 90s. And thinking back, I have absolutely nothing substantive to back that up. The entire world was invented in the late 90s as far as I know. Mom and dad bought a Honda about then, so apparently the Civic was invented in the late 90s, as well as Honda, and auto manufacturing, and Japan.
That sounds like the “classic” version I found in the store a few years ago. I didn’t like it either.
“I’d’ve sworn it came out in middle school in the late 90s.”
I can tell you for certain it was around in the 60s.
From Wiki:
I was once dicking around with one of those computerized soda machines that will mix and dispense anything in the Coca-Cola catalog. I discovered that Mountain Dew is pretty much ginger ale with orange. Try it if you get the chance, the taste is remarkably close.
It’s not ginger ale, well it wasn’t when I tried it.
The only real commercial brand Ginger Ale I know of, is Vernors. All the other big brand ginger ale is Seven Up or Sprite with a different label.
Yeah, we’ve already established that your taste buds are fucked up. No need to dwell on it further.
And the flavor is awful – it tastes like the regular crap.
Ha!
That’s what they were trying to do.
I refer you to my other comment
I did the research a while back and I couldn’t discover if there was any difference. But I wouldn’t mind a better-tasting diet Dew.
The ingredients list is nothing alike.
And it depends on whether you like the taste of regular dew.
I’m going to have to find someone to offload these bottles on, because I will never drink them.
Regular Dew was a mainstay for two decades.
Just drink water.
Vodka water is a terrible drink.
But, Vodka and Diet Squirt is excellent.
Is vodka water like a Midas curse?
*files for future reference*
Seriously… I’ve been looking for ages for a diet soda that goes with vodka. Diet 7-Up isn’t half bad. I don’t think I’ve seen Diet Squirt anywhere but I’ll keep an eye open.
Sprite Zero?
Vodka and Fresca works equally well, but Fresca doesn’t go on sale as often around here.
Yeah, vodka Fresca is not bad. But I find I get tired of it after a while and start tasting the diet too much and have to move on to something else.
Mountain Dew Zero is crap
Mountain Dew Throw-Back has apparently been thrown-back and has been replaced with Mountain Dew Real Sugar, which is also crap.
Zero cal’s. Maybe they are trying to tell you something?
Maybe it will be the official antifa drink.
I can just see the commercial with some antifa dude on the street with flaming building in the background:
‘Whenever your’re rioting and burning, and you’re running out of energy and don’t know when the next pallet of bricks and fireworks will arrive, Mountain Dew Zero hits the spot, ahhh, key Zookie, look over there, there’s a CVS over there that hasn’t been looted, let’s go! *tosses bottle of Moutain Dew Zero to Zookie*’.
Well, it does dress in black and have terrible taste.
You drink…DIET…Mountain Dew?
This answers so many questions, yet raise so many more.
Who doesn’t? Diet soda is like masturbation. It feels good, affects nothing, and if you feel guilty about it that’s between you and God.
What’s the best part about masturbation?
You don’t have to talk to anyone afterwards.
“As a pleasure, it is too fleeting. As a pastime, it is too tiring. And it is totally unsuited to the drawing room.”
-Mark Twain
Just don’t let it get out of hand.

Our heat is down a some today, 84 now with nice Trade Winds and 75 expected tonight. I am making tomato salad since I picked a bunch from the garden today and I used the last group for garlic soup. I gave away about 25 avocados and my next set of sunflowers, squash and watermelon are coming along well. I found yet another bunch of apple bananas in my patch so now I have 3 bunches (~300 bananas) hanging there- hopefully they’ll space out becoming ripe.
Tomorrow I’ll go to the bar to eat breakfast and watch the Packers (sound will be off) followed by a sail. I am stuck on a rock, but it is not a bad rock to be stuck on.

I’m culturally appropriating from the Chinese again tonight (last night was potstickers).

Tonight was a Kale Caesar salad, New York Strip, and broccoli with Hillbilly Hollandaise, two Aviation cocktails, three Goose Island IPAs, and a few espressos. My ass ain’t gonna make it ’til the morning.

NJR imagines life without money:
https://www.currentaffairs.org/2020/09/the-possibility-of-life-without-money
***
Let me describe to you an imagined place where money has virtually disappeared from people’s lives:
Pleasant Acres is one of those awful Florida retirement villages full of Trump supporters where everyone plays pickleball and does salsa dancing.
…
Eventually, Pleasant Acres was so pleasant that it attracted many visitors, who liked to take its classes and attend the movie nights. The visitors were charged money (unless they were from elsewhere in the Pleasant Acres Network), and eventually the intake from visitors became substantial. At this point, Pleasant Acres did something interesting: it cut the workweek in half, and it entirely eliminated the $100,000 annual fee, instead simply requiring 20 hours a week of work from all residents. Supplies the facility needed to purchase from outside (new lawnmowers, electronics, food, medical equipment) were paid for with the tourist revenue. But much was made inside the village, and all the work was simply done by the village residents. Performing the work guaranteed that when you eventually became unable to do work, you were still allowed to live and use all the amenities as before.
There was, of course, eventually a labor uprising, because the seniors of the village realized at a certain point that upper management was extraneous. They refused any longer to let extra tourist revenue go to the company’s profits, and insisted it be split among the workers equally. Because the company had made the mistake of becoming dependent on the village residents, it was forced to democratize.
And thus was Socialism In One Retirement Village achieved.
***
Very imaginative, Nate. Do you have any real examples of this actually happening?
And even your fantasy requires *other* people to pay for things!
There are no cities that are dependent on tourism dollars now. None at all.
Well… there won’t be after another year or so of lockdown.
Or, and let me know if I’m stretching the ol gray matter too far, we go to work in highly capitalized firms putting our efforts to the long lever arm of productivity, you know, letting the machines do most of the work, and then we collect a paycheck and then we use that paycheck to buy the things we want to buy, rather than pretending that work is just the application of effort to some task, whatever it is, however it gets done.
In Tanzania between 1973 and 1975, millions of people were forced into planned villages for collective farming. It was called Ujamaa (familyhood, togetherness). Crop yields plummeted. Managers stole equipment and fertilizer and sold it on the black market. I met a guy who lived through it who said after a while it was impossible to buy things like soap and toothpaste.
The lefty vermin at wiki blame it all on bad luck, of course.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ujamaa#Ujamaa_Villages_and_Tanzanian_Villagization
***
Eventually a number of factors contributed to the downfall of the development model based on the Ujamaa concept. Among those factors were the oil crisis of the 1970s, the collapse of export commodity prices (particularly coffee and sisal), a lack of foreign direct investment, two successive droughts, and the onset of the war with Uganda in 1978, which bled the young Tanzanian nation of valuable resources.
There were also internal factors that lead to the implosion of the Ujamaa program. The first was resistance from the public. During the 1970s there was a resistance from the peasantry to leave their individual farms and move to communal living due to the lack of personal capital that came out of the communal farms. This led President Nyerere to order forced movement to Ujamaa villages.[citation needed] Public frustration did not help the Ujamaa villages in producing acceptable agricultural yields.
Another issue that created friction in the success of Ujamaa was the importance of self-reliance during a time of neoliberal international economic policies. These international economic policies made it particularly difficult for newly independent countries such as Tanzania to be able to grow even with the mentality of self-propagated economic production.
By 1985 it was clear that Ujamaa had failed to lift Tanzania out of its poor economic state; Nyerere announced that he would retire voluntarily after presidential elections that same year.

None of these utopia schemes have ever worked out. The ensuing catastrophe just varies in scope, from the Soviet Union where tens of millions were starved to death to the recent example of CHOP in Seattle.
But nevertheless it is always a shit show. You saw CHOP, you see Portland today. That is what the democrats want for the entire country, so something much more on the scale of the Soviet Union disaster wise.

Nine Black Lives Matter protesters who were confronted by a white St. Louis couple waving an AR 15-style rifle and a semi-automatic pistol as they allegedly stood guard on the beautifully manicured lawn of their mansion, have been issued trespassing summonses for marching onto a private property.

On Sept. 4, Black Lives Matter activist Ohun Ashe posted on Twitter that she had received a summons from the police department.
“I was just sent a summons to appear in court for ‘trespassing on private property’ on Portland Pl aka the street Patricia and Mark McCloskey live on,” she wrote.
“I had a gun waved in my face by them but trespassing is what matters?” she added.
In July, Circuit Attorney Kimberly Gardner recommended “that the McCloskeys participate in one of my office’s diversion programs.” And Missouri Gov. Mike Parson said he would likely pardon the couple if they were charged.

Mrs T. and I just watched several episodes of Cobra Kai. She pretty much hated it. I thought it was pretty good. I could be sympathetic to most of the characters without idealizing them. She could not….
My kid watched a bunch of that. It’s funny, because it takes place in a bunch of local neighborhoods and has a lot of insider comments. That Macchio guy grew up around here. It’s a throwback to when all TV and most movies were centered on LA locations. I enjoyed it, mostly.
I’ll be enjoying it by myself apparently.
Mrs TOK also hated it. But I’m into season 2 already and I think it’s great.
I think it does the whole “morally ambiguous character” thing very well. Everyone wants their game/book/show to show the moral gray area everyone inhabits, but most of them do it clumsily by having people act out of character randomly. Cobra Kai does a very good job of setting up both the good and the bad behavior of the characters as being natural behavior for them. Human flaws are much more interesting when they emerge naturally, rather than because the writer says “Ok, character X is just too good, time for the rape murder scene” or “Hmm, no one is hoing to root for Hitler at all, maybe have a scene where he feeds puppies”
The character development is seriously lacking, but we’ll see where it goes.
I’ve been hearing loud music all night. I though the neighbors were having a party. Turns out there’s some kind of concert at the fairgrounds. Nice to see some things are getting back to normal.
I can hear Pimlico concerts up here. About 5 miles north. I’m not sure if I haven’t heard any this summer is due to commie cooties, or the neighborhood meeting they had around here last fall, complaining about the noise. I mean it was freaking loud, including all day long helicopter fly overs.
Lucky bastard! Ain’t been no live music venues all fucking year, and according to our “DR” from the county, we don’t get to until after the election. Is This the Secret to Selling Joe Biden?
Young people aren’t particularly excited about Joe Biden. One strategy to change their mind? Convince them that they’re voting for a big, progressive crew.
***
The Democratic Avengers has since become one of the group’s most popular messages about Biden, according to its surveys, and the idea has made its way into ads. One features action-movie music, a comic-book font, and various Democrats stylized as cartoon characters. Bernie Sanders, it reads, “supports a $15 minimum wage!” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is “champion of [the] Green New Deal!” Joe Biden, meanwhile, “is building the team that we want to run things!” A similar theme has also made its way into an ad by Students for [Ed] Markey, another old guy who recently triumphed somewhat unexpectedly. Recently, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert made a loving send-up with a similar Avengers theme.
***
The ad in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=678wgwQLpa4
ratio’d with brutal comments
***
If the Avengers model works beyond focus groups and the occasional YouTube video, it could suggest that young people, or at least Democrats, or at least young Democrats, are actually more interested in liberal policies than they are in charismatic candidates. Rather than get fired up about Biden’s personality, 20-somethings might thrill to a coterie of technocrats who have concrete proposals to change the way the country works. Brent Cohen, the executive director of Generation Progress, another youth-voting advocacy group, told me that he’s not worried about the Biden enthusiasm gap because “young people vote based on policy.” And he and other Democratic strategists believe that when it comes to policy, the choice for young voters is clear.
***
[anguished Zoidberg groan]
***
The prospects of the Avengers strategy are still murky. The Avengers-style ad by NextGen had 145 views on YouTube when I last played it. Young voters’ cynicism about Biden and other traditional politicians might extend to a PAC’s dorky attempt to convince them that senators are superheroes.

All I want to do is skip merrily along through life but once in awhile the Black Dog starts nipping at my heels. I am so sorry if my comments caused my Friends here any distress. You people mean the world to me.
Hey Festus. I’m glad you are around.
Thank you, Friend. Likewise I’m sure! I can get a little too “dramatic” for my own good once in awhile. I sometimes question my life’s worth in more stringent terms than need be.
So I don’t need to offer to have your baby?
*raised triple eyebrow*
That did concern me. Glad to know you are okay.
Thanks Chafed! You were in my corner through a bad patch last year and I’ll never forget that kindness.
Great to know that you are doing well, Festus!
I read much and talk little here, so I know that you and your comments are valued and appreciated. I look forward to reading them for years to come.
Take care of yourself, be well and keep putting one foot in front of the other. As Tom Hanks says in Cast Away:
“I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?”
Hey bruh, glad you’re here with us.
I get that kind of crap going on in my mind too. Reading Stoic philosophy has helped me a ton (Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, and now Epictetus).
Also read a book called “12 Rules for Life” by some hardcore alt-right neo-Nazi from Canada that was quite beneficial to me.
Much appreciated! I feel better now. It all just seems like a fucking chore sometimes. Your kind words are a help.
Definitely get the idea of living being a bit of a chore- I get bored of eating sometimes. Like I could be hungry, and it is just a chore to actually go through the motions of eating. Could be delicious food and everything- it’s like peak first world problems, but I can’t help it.
Heh, I almost said the same thing about the Stoics. Big Kermit fan too, though I haven’t gotten 12 rules yet.
I have a very similar temperament. Best of luck…

I go to bed early and so I missed the discussion last night, regrettably.
Re: Derpetologist’s discussion of Herbert’s interpretation of law.
Believing that the meaning of law is flexible is a simple and very common mistake. (Hat tip to Heroic) Words do not have meanings. Meanings have words. It is impossible to overstate the importance of this distinction.
I am an originalist in that the words of the law are meant to convey a particular meaning. It is mendacious to take those words and hang them on meanings that they were not meant to convey. Going down that road leads one to “…that depends on the the meaning of ‘is’ is. ”
This is where science has something to teach us. One does not start with a preconceived, desired conclusion then construct a pretzelly narrative leading to that conclusion. Doing so is the height of dishonesty even if one is not aware they are doing so.
Despite one’s ability to garble the language the ideas behind the words in the bill of rights are fixed. “Shall make no law” are words meant to convey a particular meaning and any honest, sensible person knows what that meaning is.
This highlights the importance of the premise of natural rights and is the primary cause of the schist in our country today.
Ideas matter.
Keto pancakes make an excellent delivery system for Kerrygold butter.
Mmmmmmm. Plus some blueberries.
Our summer huckleberries….well, just try some and you will never touch a blanched, tasteless blueberry again.
I don’t think I’ve every had huckleberries before.
*ever
I was in Maine in July and picking the blueberries along the hikes was awesome!
Tart and tasty!

Can recommend.
Hmmm… May I safely assume this can also be used for waffles?
I make my keto waffles from scratch, but you can safely assume with this stuff.
Mrs. Suthenboy makes pancakes with finely ground oat powder mixed in cottage cheese. I dont know the exact recipe but they are damned good and taste just like pancakes.
She just walked in….let me ask
2 cups cottage cheese
1/4 cup oat powder….oatmeal ground up in a ninja or other type blender
3 eggs
2tble oil
sweetener and cinnamon optional – she uses Splenda and cinnamon
takes longer than regular pancakes to cook.
I use lots of butter and maple syrup
These are quite good and dont give you that bloated/ I ate too much feeling that flour pancakes are prone to give you.
Coffee makes an excellent delivery system for MCTs 😉
One spoonful of coconut oil for me and one for my coffee.
