Friday Afternoon Links of 4-Hour, One-Way Road Trips

I would have stuck around longer, but you know how it is when you’re hungry!

You may have heard about this already, but I can’t wait so we’re going to watch it again.

Meanwhile, dogs really are man’s best friend.

Seems appropriate that someone should be wearing masks, this time of year.

And Halloween swiftly approaches; you know what that means… It’s almost Christmas!

If it seems like it’s really too soon for that, and you’re not quite ready for Christmas music, you could always take a little break

Lastly, this is definitely not Christmas music.

YouTube has become extra annoying lately.

    • B.P.

I am besieged by youtube “Bet MGM” ads.

      • Chafed

        Online gambling addiction confirmed.

“Paula Reid of CBS News said a raccoon attacked multiple news crews on the North Lawn on Sept. 28, and posted photos on Twitter showing a few rummaging around a media tent.”

    Good.

    • J. Frank Parnell

Just one more example of Trump-inspired violence against our brave media.

    • Gender Traitor

Excuse me – “rac of color,” if you please!!!

    • B.P.

      Trash pandas attracted to trash.

    • pan fried wylie

The raccoon has a twitter account?

Living under a rock doesn’t seem like a bad idea. Thing is, after the election, you might want to stay under there

    • Fourscore

Just had a couple, long time friends, leave for home. Full blown liberals, suburban Mpls folks. Couldn’t/didn’t explain why they were Biden voters, surprised that us deplorables were not. (I’m a none voter, Mrs F is in the bag for Big Orange).

I ran down MY list of 2024 potential Republican candidates.

      Pompeo
      Rand Paul
      Mike Pence
      Kristi Noem
      Jim Jordan

My friend had never heard of Kristi, I told him the SoDak governor that wouldn’t lock down, our next door neighboring state. He wasn’t aware of that either. Didn’t know Jim Jordan or Rand. Both knew however that they were voting for Biden because Trump is a bad person. They were amazed at all the Trump signs here in the hinterland, didn’t make sense to them.
The Mrs wasn’t aware of the Middle East peace agreements.

Retired, college educated but sadly, either misinformed or uninformed.

      • Ownbestenemy

They are informed as much as the media or source they read wants them to be.

      • B.P.

They really, really buried the mideast peace situation.

      • slumbrew

It’s pretty amazing. Any other presidency, it’d still be front-page news.

        J/K, any D presidency.

      • Count Potato

Reagan and Nixon both got plenty of good press on foreign policy achievements. The Bushes got ass coverings for their Persian Gulf bullshit.

      • C. Anacreon

I think you should add Nikki Haley to that list.

      • Fourscore

Probably you’re right, other wannabbees, I’m sure. All are invited to add their likely candidates.

      • Gadfly

Retired, college educated but sadly, either misinformed or uninformed.

I’m reminded of that apocryphal Mark Twain quote: “If you don’t read the newspaper, you are uninformed. If you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed. ”

As an aside, while that quote is apocryphal, it does seem to capture his actual sentiment, because he did say this:

It has become a sarcastic proverb that a thing must be true if you saw it in a newspaper. That is the opinion intelligent people have of that lying vehicle in a nutshell. But the trouble is that the stupid people–who constitute the grand overwhelming majority of this and all other nations–do believe and are moulded and convinced by what they get out of a newspaper, and there is where the harm lies.

That awful power, the public opinion of a nation, is created in America by a horde of ignorant, self-complacent simpletons who failed at ditching and shoemaking and fetched up in journalism on their way to the poorhouse.

        The more things change…

      • C. Anacreon

I like when Twain said, “speak softly and carry a big dick”.

“If you love getting the Christmas tree out but hate the hassle of decorating around the back of it, this could be the perfect thing for you”

What’s next, half a nativity scene with 1.5 wise men?

    • leon

To me, decorating the tree is about doing it to have fun. If you can’t be bothered to do something fun, then why are you doing it at all?

      • Count Potato

Also, how do they keep it from making a mess of sap on the wall?

      • Toxteth O'Grady

Get a Charlie Brown tree. A red globe ornament and a light blue tree skirt. Very minimalist.

  5. Count Potato

“The five-night stay costs an “Abraham Lincoln-inspired” $5 per night.”

    Sounds like a bargain.

I’ll be spending more on booze staying home.

  6. prolefeed

How Nancy Pelosi interprets the 25th Amendment:

their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President

“The president is mentally unfit, and as proof of this, he submitted a SCOTUS nominee I don’t approve of. So, let the soft coup transition of power begin …”

    Related:

The order of succession specifies that the office passes to the vice president; if the vice presidency is simultaneously vacant, or if the vice president is also incapacitated, the powers and duties of the presidency pass to the speaker of the House of Representatives

Hmm, so who takes power if the President is removed from power, and then the VP before he can appoint a successor?

    • J. Frank Parnell

OK great, send Pence to debate Biden next week.

      • prolefeed

I think she’s angling for President Pro Tem Pelosi to debate Biden.

      • The Other Kevin

2/3 of the people on stage are on the same team, might as well make it unanimous.

  7. The Other Kevin

I went mountain biking on a hand cycle for the first time today. It was fun but man am I tired.

    • Count Potato

I’d love a stationary hand bike, but they are very expensive, and few gyms have them. Great for SITS muscles.

    • Nephilium

That sounds mildly terrifying. Glad you enjoyed yourself.

    • commodious spittoon

On a mountain? Outside? Where the Covid is?

      • Mad Scientist

Before long there will be only one Kevin. Let’s remove our hats and observe a moment of silence.

      • The Other Kevin

In a park in Illinois. No mountains. And I was too fast for Covid to catch me.

    • Tonio

Coolness. Maybe do a short writeup of the experience? With pictures.

      • The Other Kevin

I only have one photo but I agree, it would be fun to write about it!

      • l0b0t

TOK, I too would LOVE to read all about this cycle and your thoughts on the machine. I was once in the Colorado Springs airport waiting for a flight when I struck up a conversation with a fellow who was traveling with his racing hand-cycle; he had just spent a few months at the Olympic Training Center. His cycle was amazing – so light and sleek.

      • Tonio

Also interested in the bike itself and the controls.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      Ok, you’re officially a badass.

      • slumbrew

        The sled hockey wasn’t enough?

    • Chafed

“A Chinese virologist who claims the coronavirus was cooked up in a military lab has accused Beijing of fabricating the virus genome data to cover up its ‘unrestricted bioweapon’.

Although scientists are still unravelling the origin of the pandemic, it is widely suggested that the virus had jumped onto humans from wild animals, such as bats or pangolins.

On January 11, China publicly released the genetic sequence of COVID-19 and shared it with the World Health Organization (WHO).”

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8823825/Coronavirus-Chinese-virologist-accuses-Beijing-faking-virus-genome-data-hide-bioweapon.html

    Who knows?

    • commodious spittoon

I expect better of Chinese virologists than this weak-tea Covid crap.

      • slumbrew

        Worst. Bioweapon. Ever.

      • commodious spittoon

        SAD!

      • Count Potato

I don’t know. Seems pretty devastating so far.

      • C. Anacreon

They know it actually came from Randy Marsh fucking a pangolin.

    • R C Dean

Can’t we sequence it ourself? Haven’t we, in order to determine that there is more than one mutation?

  9. Mostly Peaceful JaimeRoberto

If Trump managed to train the raccoons to attack reporters, he’s definitely got my vote. Though I suspect this was really the Hair’s doing.

    • Spartacus

Probably more like the other way around.

    • KibbledKristen

I don’t have a prob not honoring WW

      • Chafed

Agreed. You would think, though, that they would name it after someone with foreign policy experience.

      • KibbledKristen

Well, Condi Rice was just out of the question, given her unfortunate Republicanism.

I’m not defending Wilson. He might have been the worst President. And he was legit racist. But this re-naming shit because past people weren’t woke is just stupid.

    • C. Anacreon

Sounds like they were faced with a Hobson choice.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

Fine by me. I just don’t want Wilson memory-holed.

I’ll kick it off at 20:00 Eastern.

Bitchfest? Are you trying to imply that there ARE libertarian women?

      Yikes!

Although probably low on any list from Florida.

Last week the Home Depot had removed all the seeds and inside gardening stuff and replaced it with XMAS stuff. WTF?! This is Hawaii and there is no off season for gardening. Plus XMAS crap (and one selection of Hanukah lights) before Thanksgiving is an affront to common decency. Then this week the grocery store had XMAS candy showing up next to the Halloween diabetes in a mega bag selection.

    Bah humbug!

    • Fourscore

Wow! You folks in a later time zone are way ahead of us. We still have to get through Columbus Day protests, Halloween decorations, Election Day craft beer, Veteran’s Day Candy
Hanukkah celebrations and finally pre-Kwanzaa on Dec 25th. We’re gonna have to do a lot of celebrating before 2021 flu season.

  13. LJW

They need a 3/4 tree that you can put in the corner.

    • The Hyperbole

1/4 tree, or are you thinking of an outside corner?

  14. Ownbestenemy

Im not saying it was me…but 2 weeks ago I implored the president to bring home the troops from Afghanistan as I do not want my son (19) and mh next sons (15) to sign up for the same war.

Then he tweets he wants them home. Okay I am saying it was me.

The hand wringing from anonymous sources saying this is a bad idea is death cult mentality. They want a new 100 year war.

    • The Hyperbole

Lets’ hope he means it this time, seems I’ve heard this song before. The cynic in my fears this is just an election time sop to the anti war crowd.

      • Fourscore

Besides us, is there an anti-war crowd? More like a trio/quartet, maybe

      • Fatty Bolger

        “anti war crowd”

Yeah, can’t win an election without those guys. ?

      • Ownbestenemy

Oh I agree. I know its smoke up my ass but for the sake of my kids I hold out hope.

      • mexican sharpshooter

The cynic in my fears this is just an election time sop to the anti war crowd.

        More likely the military/veterans.

      • The Hyperbole

Yeah, “anti-war crowd” wasn’t the best descriptor, I didn’t just mean dirty peacenik kumbaya hippies. Trump is no idiot he knows large swaths of voter are tired of the ME BS, still with no regards for who it’s aimed at, I truly hope it’s more than political pandering, but I’m not going to be holding my breath until the last man is home.

    • ron73440

I went in early 2013 for 6 months.

We were told our replacements would be the last Marines in that shithole.

It’s funny, because I know I’ll end up in a reeducation camp first, and if they don’t liquidate me, I will become a convert, join their version of the Checka, and become the Beria of the United Socialist States. Then all these useful idiots will be in some serious trouble.

    • l0b0t

Fun Fact – One of the worst crafty jobs I worked was a TGI Fridays commercial starring Olberman. It was shot on a Friday night, at the TGI Fridays in Times Square. They opted to keep the restaurant open for business because the clients wanted the “energy, vitality, and ambiance” of a house full of real customers (usually, a location would close and background actors employed to work under the 1st Assistant Director, performing whatever is required). As you might imagine, a scheduled 8 hour shoot turned into a 14 hour shoot because, Times Square on Friday night and Olberman getting tipsy to the point of being unable to it his marks.

      • Count Potato

You mentioned you had a forum. What’s it about?

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

Olbermann would happily escort wrong thinkers to the gulags and gas chambers.

He is truly an evil fucker.

It used to be that we removed crazy people like him from society.

Assume ACB -> SCOTUS. Assume 25 invoked Biden. SCOTUS yes/no 3 terms President Harris?

  17. dbleagle

My ballot arrived in the mail yesterday. It is showtime in Hawaii. Nobody gives a shit because our big 4 Electoral College votes are going for the HARRIS/biden ticket.

We are a 100% mail in voting state but even as stupid as our legislature and bureaucrats are they have made it pretty damn hard to fuck up your ballot.

In big bold red letters the outside envelope states: Votes received after 7pm election day will not be counted.
In big bold red letters the postage paid return envelope states: If you fail to sign inside the box on this envelope your ballot will not be counted.
In black letters it states that you must place your filled out ballot in the privacy sleeve.
The ballot states you must completely fill the box for your selections with only blue or black ink. If you fill in two boxes or use “whiteout” your vote for that office will not be counted. (Instructions included on how to request a new ballot.)

I have voted absentee almost my entire adult life. These instructions are pretty standard. If an adult can’t follow these simple instructions then their vote should not be counted. But it is abundantly clear that the Dems will seek to use the courts to count votes that can’t meet the statutory requirements of the local. They will also continue their cries of “voter suppression” when (if?) the GOP seeks to have the courts follow the letter of the law.

BTW: I get six choices for president and for the US House. Libertarian, along with American Socialist, Green, Constitutionalist, Independent, Donks and Elephants.

    • Sensei

I haven’t opened my NJ ballot yet. My bet is it isn’t nearly as well done.

      • LJW

Don’t worry someone already opened and submitted it for you.

    • Mostly Peaceful JaimeRoberto

Yeah, but is it in 20 different languages like in California? We almost have more languages than genders.

    • Ted S.

Are you sure that’s not seven choices?

      • dbleagle

Are Donks and Elephants really that different?

  18. Raven Nation

Glad to Expanse S5 is ready. Mildly disappointed that it’s going to come out on a (mostly) weekly schedule.

    • Rhywun

I won’t watch this preview since I haven’t watched S04 yet. I need to get on that (thanks, Lobot!)

      • Raven Nation

I think I went back and binged S1-4 over the course of a couple of weeks.

      • Rhywun

I think I’ve seen the first season three or four times by now. I’m undecided whether I need to binge S03 before I watch S04 – I’ve only seen it twice.

    • Ownbestenemy

      At the end…

[If] Trump makes a serious play to steal it, Lee’s “we’re not a democracy” argument provides a ready-made justification for tactics that amount to a kind of legal coup.”

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        Projection, all the time

      • Ownbestenemy

Hand waving the past 4 years of attempting a “legal” coup is just…I cannot even.

    • dbleagle

The article also hands waves away voter fraud issues and subtly espouses the abolition of the Electoral Collage without the hard work of amending the US Constitution.

    • Count Potato

      Uncut Gems was great though.

      • dbleagle

Yeah. It was like a totally different guy named Adam Sandler.

    • Mad Scientist

      Is there oil in Greenland?

        I don’t know, but it’s a great place for a missile base.

    • B.P.

I guess it was too much trouble to include one Eastern European country in the poll.

      • Count Potato

I’ve heard Trump is popular in Poland.

    • Raven Nation

I wouldn’t be surprised if most of those were fairly accurate. But, given recent politics in Germany, that one seems off.

    • Drake

The Eurotrash, Deep State, Media, and Big Tech all want me to vote for Biden. Some of the many reasons why I won’t.

      • dbleagle

I agree. In general if “Europe” thinks a policy or politician is good then I am pretty sure that policy/politician will be anti-liberty and I’ll be against it.

I do support many euro wines, beers, and liquors.

    • Rhywun

The issue is that Americans are so isolated that they don’t even know the rest of the world is way ahead of them with social care.

      Sick burn!

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

We’re all on borrowed money and time, particularly Europe.

The reckoning will come, as usual well beyond the point at which anything can be done about it.

      Yes, CNN all day.

    • ron73440

So looks like the media was successful on painting the kidnapping thing as Trump supporters?

      Why do you say that?

      • Ownbestenemy

The aftermath…what people on various sites are saying. That it was Trump supporters…etc.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Probably the same kind of people who can’t think for themselves and still buy into the Russia stuff. Those types will believe, or pretend to believe at least, anything they’re fed if it reflects badly on Trump.

      • ron73440

I try to avoid all that, but it doesn’t surprise me.

I wish I could go back to a simpler time, when “I hate people” was more of a joke.

    • Raven Nation

Interesting. I know someone who lives in Nebraska and apparently there is a measure on the ballot that would eliminate a provision in the state constitution which allows for slavery or involuntary servitude as a punishment.

    • Ownbestenemy

So the cops will shot a dog on sight but not break a window? I get it..they didnt want to deal with the aftermath of breaking the dudes window in the insane culture we live in.

I got the impression that most of the action (inaction?) took place before the cops came.

The cops showed up and broke it, but then it was too late.

Yelp is losing their extortion income pool because restaurants and bars are shutting down left and right.

So they’re trying to make that lost revenue up by creating a whole new class of targets with this. Yelp WANTS bad reviews, it motivates businesses to pay them to get rid of the complaints.

There’s probably not an internet company I hate more than Yelp.

    • Rhywun

Unreal. Glad I stopped paying attention to them years ago.

    • The Last American Hero

So can I flag Yelp as a racist establishment?

      Tell that to Cuba.

.243 is the only one listed good for commies

It’s also big enough to be legal for deer in most places

I miss the Remington “Accelerator” round. They used a .30-06 (or .30-30, .308) brass with a .224 in a sabot. The .30-06 was 4080fps (2,003 ft/lbs). The sabot detached close to the barrel and was generally found around 10 yards away.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I remember that. It was disgusting.

“Scientists call for Covid herd immunity strategy for young

Critics describe proposal to isolate vulnerable, disabled and older people as ‘grotesque’

n international group of scientists has called on governments to overturn their coronavirus strategies and allow young and healthy people to return to normal life while protecting the most vulnerable.

The proposal, drawn up by three researchers but signed by many more, argues for letting the virus spread in low-risk groups in the hope of achieving “herd immunity”, where enough of the population is resistant to the virus to quell the pandemic.

Described as “the Great Barrington declaration”, after the Massachusetts town where it was drawn up, the plan marks the latest round in a hotly contested debate between scientists who back radically different approaches to the crisis. One critic said the “grotesque” plan amounted to a culling of sick and disabled people.

The authors of the declaration – Sunetra Gupta, of Oxford University, Jay Bhattacharya, of Stanford University, and Martin Kulldorff, of Harvard University – argue that Covid-19 lockdowns and restrictions are having “devastating effects” on public health by disrupting routine care and harming mental health, with the underprivileged bearing the greatest burden…..”

Somebody had to say it. Bravo for them.

    • R C Dean

But a strategy of isolating everyone isn’t grotesque?

        Equality!

    • Rhywun

the “grotesque” plan amounted to a culling of sick and disabled people

I don’t know what “disabled” has to do with anything but… does this person even know what “culling” means? It’s what the virus is already doing to sick people. What a maroon.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

If we pretend it’s not happening then we’re not complicit.

I am going to Mobile AL for work next week.

Because of travel restrictions I am driving with a stop in Anderson SC.

    Any recommendations at either place?

Also what are the COVID theater rules?

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Nothing specific but get you some BBQ. SC BBQ is pretty damn good.

I received my CA ballot in the mail today. I have to do a little reading on the propositions but I think I’ve got it.

So now, do I trust the post office? Should I take it to an in-person polling place?

I have no idea how they’re dealing with people who don’t have a fixed address. Do those people just ask for more ballots? It’s hard to see how to make sure people voting are citizens who live in the district they’re voting in. And although those should represent a smallish number of CA residents, a tremendous number of these “provisional” ballots will be cast.

Statewide, I’m screwed here, but I’m hoping for a decent local representative.

    • R C Dean

I dunno. Should you trust a bunch of pubsec union members who have declared their support for Biden and are already screwing up the delivery of ballots?

      Tough one.

    • mexican sharpshooter

I dunno. I might burn mine. Haven’t decided yet.

    • dbleagle

If you are in a reliably red precinct I recommend either using a blue precinct drop box or mailing it from a blue precinct. That way there is less chance your ballot will be “lost”.

I imagine everyone has heard an Antifa member is leading in the polls in the Portland mayoral race but I came across an interesting pic:

Check out the pics on the skirt: Mao…Che…it wouldn’t surprise me if Stalin and Pol Pot are on there somewhere. Portland is so fucked, I feel bad for the sane people there.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      Unreal

    • Rhywun

But is she offering more free shit? That’s all most voters care about.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Sure, you get a free ride to jail if you defend yourself or your property against her compatriots.

All the ballot propositions are easy- NO. I don’t vote for any “Office of Hawaiian Affairs” people since the entire organization uses tax money to be racist. This ballot is being easy to fill out so far. Really it is just the POTUS race that is a question mark.
