Western Michigan, color and shore

Western Michigan, color and shore

the road, winds, and long,

I had planned on playing a course in Benzonia MI, so off we went, 20 odd miles north of us, looking for Disc and color, the trees are doing their thing. There are lakes everywhere, so we pass Bear Lake headed to Benzonia.

Bear Lake

Color

Stop off at a local honey store, sadly closed, but pretty views, and move up north.

Honey

Pretty, IMO

Osprey Landing is a nice open course, easy birdies unless you hit the Treacherous Wind, which I did, 32 mph according to my app, so we bailed out.

Nice course, nice park

Frankfort has the Stormcloud Brewery, so we stopped for lunch and a flight. They specialize in Belgian ales, my favorite style, so I was happy, good service and real good food, the flatbread pizza was far better than expected.

Amazing pizza,

And World class beer, Poodle enjoyed the Cherry Cola and Caramel Pan Cookie with Ice cream, very decadent.

Belgian Ales

Atmosphere

Poodle

Caramel cookie, Vanilla Ice cream and Caramel drizzle, baked in a pan, hot and fresh and totally yummy,

As we make the turn South we come to Arcadia Dunes lookout, and tourists, because Saturday. We get out in shirts and shorts while every one else is bundled up like it’s Winter. Yusef acclimates, Yes!

Bitchin car!

A Great Lake

On we go, through the forests and the pines,

OK, we get it, Color, jeez,

Hmmm

Yes, a one lane bridge

Lakes to the right, vacation homes to the left til we reach 1,

Lake is Lake

Lake house

Really the name of the town is Onekama, they have 1, bumper stickers.

Boat

Onekama library

It’s not quite a hundred miles but it takes a day, around the west shore of Lake Michigan.

I’ll leave the shore for next time.

    Great pics.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

      Thanks Sean

      • Grumbletarian

Very nice. Those pictures remind me how gorgeous New Hampshire is in the autumn.

  2. kinnath

    lovely

  3. pistoffnick

    A Great Lake, sure.

But not the Best Lake. Some might even say mine is a Superior Lake.

Nice write up, Yusef. Glad you are acclimating (and not just mating).

    • Yusef drives a Kia

A truly Superior lake indeed, I am realizing the entire mitten a glacial moraine, a giant sand pile. And it’s 34 right now, going down to 33, then 34 at dawn when I got to work. the high only gets to about 39, never seen that, a 7 degree swing in a day

      • Rhywun

never seen that, a 7 degree swing in a day

Routine in the east biatch, git used to it!

Also routine is the “midnight hi temp” – we’ve had a bunch of those lately.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I’m not concerned, I work outside, all fucking day, it’s as cold or hot as it’s going get, ok

      • Rhywun

        ?

      • westernsloper

Wow. Welcome to the north where the temp rarely changes. I went to work and it was 6. When I left work it was at least in the teens if not twenties. I wasn’t paying attention. I just knew it was fucking cold but at least the sun was shining so didn’t matter.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

When the Sun came out, it was the backend of a small front, so wind chill! Needles in your finger tips

      • westernsloper

Is this the first time you have worked in the cold?

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I lived in Canon City, worked in Leadville in February, for example, cold means layers, nothing more.Michigan is not Colorado however

      • westernsloper

Ya, a bit cold in Leadville in Feb. I would do that before I would do a great lakes winter. Good luck!

      • Rhywun

He’ll love the lake effect 😉

      • dbleagle

Hawaii is frequently has seven degree differences from the high and low. It is easier to deal with than 70 degree daily differences in the desert.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

A friend spent some time there. He mentioned that there was no Weather Segment on the local news. The daytime temps were always the same and the nighttime temps were always the same. The only time that weather was different was when there was a hurricane on the way and then it wasn’t Weather, it was News.

      • Plinker762

It is just a big pile of sand. They build ski hills with scrapers.

  4. Rhywun

    Beautiful pics! I love fall.

  5. DEG

    Nice pictures!

Flat bread pizza? Isn’t all pizza flat bread pizza? Nice pics Yufus.

      I love knocker, knocker jokes.

      • Rhywun

Has anyone ever been able to tolerate the presence of Jimmy Kimmel long enough to listen to him explain away his years-long enthusiasm for juggies?

      • straffinrun

        Go woke+no apology > unwoke + apology

      • Rhywun

        >> unwoke + no apology

Jimmy got his own show and all Adam got was sporadic appearances on fucking Tucker.

      • Sir Digby Classic

He had that bust-a-shady-unlicensed-contractor show for a small bit. That, and The Hammer.

I’d much rather watch The Hammer on repeat every night than a Kimmel show.

      • Gdragon

I feel like he has another new show where he builds stuff for some reason, no?

I liked “The Hammer” the only time I caught it, I should watch it again.

      • Sir Digby Classic

Hammer is actually quite funny, and belongs up there with Rudy, imo.

If he does have a new show, it’s never shown up on my radar. But, it would be welcome.

      • Gdragon

Here we go, I found it. My description was even much closer than I thought it would be 😉 Didn’t last long.

“Builds Stuff Live” wasn’t great, I’m sorry to say. Intriguing premise, but the energy just didn’t work.

I realized tonight that I think Adam is divorcing – he’s been mentioning a new Malibu condo for awhile and it just clicked that he’s likely moving out.

I’m more sad that I thought I would be for some random dude I’ve never met (yet have listened to on and off since the 90’s)

      • slumbrew

I will recommend The Adam Carolla Project from 2005.

He buys his father’s POS house and flips it.

        It’s great.

      • LCDR_Fish

Adam’s got about 5 different podcasts going at the same time – including contractor stuff and dr drew – and he seems to be doing some car racing.

He also did a movie and college tour with Prager last year.

    • DEG

      I recommend #27’s iChive gallery.

      #30 is a RealDoll.

Despite the tattoos and the mask pictures, I kinda like #32’s iChive gallery.

I can google image searches on archive pictures again. That lead me to #37’s instagram page. Shame about the BLM support.

#40 has a good iChive gallery.

The first hit for a google image search on #41.

#45 should lose the stupid mask picture from her iChive gallery.

#46 and #59 also have good iChive galleries.

Caramel Pan Cookie with Ice cream

I am very down with that right there.

  8. Tonio

Sorry your round of golf got skunked. Looks like lovely country.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

It is pretty, and tree golf makes you better, I’m shaping shots, and grenades over giant trees, real fun to play here

      • Tonio

Tree golf does indeed make you better… at cursing.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

It also makes your aim better, and you learn your discs abilities much more, at least the ones that aren’t sacrificed to
        STEVE SMITH!

  9. straffinrun

    Autumn or Fall? Nice pics.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Two weeks ago, it’s beginning to fade as the weather changes, we had all four seasons today,

    • Rhywun

Fall. “Autumn” is too fancy-pants and/or British for me.

      • straffinrun

I like the silent “n”. Compromise with “faln”?

      • Rhywun

        Damn!

    • Hyperion

It’s the midwest. Fall. Autumn is some fancy uppity fake news, like soda.

  10. Sean

Tony Bobulinski is not a good speaker, but the story is compelling.

    • Rhywun

Every time I hear his name this runs through my head.

  11. Sean

Oh shit, Romania just implicated in the Biden crime syndicate.

Well, Pie? Time to come clean.

    • Rhywun

They’re giving each other the ‘vid right now, aren’t they.

    • westernsloper

      WTF you watching?

      • Sean

        Tucker interviewing Bobulinski.

      • westernsloper

        Aaah.

There it is – they screwed him out of a lot money.

  13. Hyperion

    Nice pics, Yusef.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Thanks! I have some new stuff in the future, glad you like it,

      • Hyperion

Sort of makes me homesick in a way, odd sort of way since I couldn’t go back. But I love the pics.

That little store reminds me of the little bait shops like that all over MI and Northern IN. Fishing is great out here if you ever get into it. Stay warm, bro.

    • westernsloper

We need to come up with the nuclear OFFS for shit like that. I contribute ….Fuck Off Already Fer Fucks Sake. FOAFFS. Nye totally FOAFFS it there.

    • Rhywun

Only a giant, soulless corporate chain could support that level of flapdoodle.

    • Sir Digby Classic

This is the best thing Chipotle has done since that latest outbreak of food poisoning.

      Heh

    • Sean

I was expecting some sheep in compromising positions.

      • Hyperion

And there are more sheep in NZ than people, and it’s extremely isolated compared to almost anywhere.

Sounds like experiments in totalitarianism to me.

      • commodious spittoon

Oh damn I haven’t thought about that in years. Maybe two of them.

      • Tres Cool

That IS a catchy little tune. Its going to be in my head all night.

      • Rhywun

        This is a bit worse.

    • dbleagle

Damn the same nation whose soldiers were feared by the enemy in two world wars has been skin-suited. This confirms my complete lack of respect the Kiwis and Aussies have earned since 2010.

      • Drake

They elected the Karen of all Karens.

      • westernsloper

I worked a few years in PNG with almost an exclusively Aussie and Kiwi crew with the odd Canadian thrown in. Being the token American I got a lot of shit because we are the evil fuckers on the planet but it was usually just crew ribbing and I got along. Those guys were true believers in nobody should own a gun except for hunting, and pretty much all the worlds problems were our fault. There might be an argument, a bad one, made for the second but the first, ya, not agreeing. Down under is lost. Sometimes I think of re-firing up facebook to check in with my ex Kiwi security guys when I was in Iraq (ex SAS) to see what they think of all that shit.

      • Sir Digby Classic

Funny how “commonwealth” seems to be an infection.

A royal pain in the ass.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Those people defending this by saying people get a nice stay in a hotel so this is AOK should be deported to Antarctica.

      • Hyperion

I’d like to interview a few of those lucky folk.

But I do know that one time AA fucked up my connecting flight and I got stuck in Miami overnight. They put me up in a hotel and I swear that was the nicest hotel room I’ve ever stayed in, in all my life. And I was still pissed. I would have been even more pissed if it was for 2 weeks.

There’s no price on freedom of movement.

    • LJW

It’s ok the New Zealanders still have their guns… What’s that? They gave those up a couple of years ago? Welp they’re screwed.

    • Urthona

      Well ok then.

  14. PudPaisley

Technically Yusef, you’re in the western part of lower Michigan. You have to go at least another 100 miles west (and north) to get to the Ottowa National Forest, Porcupine Mountains, and Keweemaw Peninsula to truly be in western Michigan.

Joking aside, I really want to make a trip to your new neck of the woods some day. It’s a pretty area and haven’t been there since I was a kid. I want to scuba dive the ultra clear waters in Traverse Bay.

    • Tres Cool

      +1 Petoskey Stone

      • PudPaisley

I just learned something new. Thanks!

      • Cancelled

Hope the Bee Joint is open the next time you cruise the course. Great pitchers, Yusef. Too local though, could be here. Good to know you are back to getting some joy in your life, been a tough year or two for you.

  18. PudPaisley

The Donald held a rally today at 5pm about 6 blocks down the road from my shop at the local race track in West Salem, WI.

When I drove to the shop around 9am this morning there were already a couple hundred patriotic Americans at the track, with most vehicles flying Trump flags. It was like a big party or tailgating before a concert at a big outdoor amphitheater.

When I left the shop around 3 there were thousands of people there already. I heard from a friend about 10,000 people showed up. What’s crazy is it was only about 25 degrees this morning and never got above 33 all day, yet everyone looked to be in high spirits and it had a festive vibe to the crowd.

This area normally votes blue due to all the college students in La Crosse, but barely went for Trump last time. Obama won big here in 2008 and 2012. I think Trump will win this area again. When you get outside La Crosse, there is a strong independent and libertarian streak in this area. When Ed Thompson ran for Governor on the Libertarian ticket in 2002, he got around 35-40% of the vote in this area.

    • Rhywun

And now he’s flapping his gums in Nebraska. I don’t know how he does it.

  19. R C Dean

Thanks, Yusef. Takes me straight back to my years in Wisconsin. Fall is wonderful in the upper Midwest.

    • leon

Are there confederate soldiers buried in Oregon?

    • LJW

Just ignore that pesky first amendment.

  20. leon

    Awesome Pics Yusef.

I don’t know what it is, maybe growing up in the mountains, but there is something fascinating to me about a lake so big you can’t see the other side.

    • blackjack

Yusef makes even frisbees look cool and fun. That guy’s got the life, man!

    • Caput Lupinum

Well if the Red Rock Pass is Idaho hadn’t collapsed a few thousand years ago, you’d still have Lake Bonneville in Utah. While it lasted it was around the size of current day Lake Michigan, but once the natural dam holding it broke up all but the deepest part of it drained out, so now you’re stuck with the remnants of it, the Great Salt Lake, Utah Lake, Sevier Lake, and Rush Lake.

      • Gustave Lytton

Eating delicious corn tonight, thanks to the Missoula floods.

  21. leon

I don’t know why, but i do keep seeing Biden ads. Seems like a waste of money advertising here. But whatever.

    • blackjack

I keep getting texts from PACs. The last one was from AFL/CIO and begging me to vote against prop 22. The one that reverses the legislature on outlawing independent contractors. Since it’s just a text, I respond and tell them that I’m opposed to outlawing certain jobs and I like Uber and Lyft. They responded that I should read their website to learn more about the issue. I then, told him he should read about authoritarian governments and what happens when they take control of industry. The last response was ” OK” LOL.

      • Rhywun

I don’t think I’ve gotten more than a handful of spam texts in my life, and none of them political. I feel unwanted 🙁

      • Caput Lupinum

I keep getting texts from various right leaning PACs, but they all refer to me by my father’s name. I think he gave my phone number to someone.

      • slumbrew

        That’s awesome.

      • Caput Lupinum

I find them humorous, but it would have been gut bustingingly hilarious if he gave them my sister’s number instead.

      • Gadfly

Were you ever on the same phone plan as your father? Because that could explain it. I’ve had the same thing happen to me, both left and right leaning groups keep texting me under my father’s name. I know my dad wouldn’t give out my number, so I can only assume the databases the data-miners keep have an error somewhere, probably because my number used to be on his plan.

      • Caput Lupinum

Nope. Haven’t been on the family plan since college, and pops didn’t see the need for a cell phone back then since we lived in an area that still mostly lacks cell reception and he’d have to leave it at home when he went to work any way. He only got a cell phone three or four years ago, mostly to annoy my mother. He admitted to giving out my number, he needed a phone number to sign up for something and didn’t want to give out the house number, knew giving them my mother’s number would cause no end of grief for him, and couldn’t remember his own cell number. He gave mine because it was one of the few he could remember and he figured I’m tech savvy enough to block anything I didn’t want and antisocial enough that probably wouldn’t care.

      • Sir Digby Classic

I get plenty of texts calling me Angela, and wondering if I’m interested in selling a house on a street, and in a city, where I’ve never lived.

I also get voicemails and calls looking to get Angela to pay on some debt or something. Maybe it’s that old mortgage….

Also, how did they figure out my alter ego?

      • slumbrew

NY-7/NY-8/NY-9 (I assume you’re in one of those) are D+38/D+36/D+34 – nobody is wasting their campaign dollars on you 😉

      • Rhywun

        NY-11 – R+3

      • Rhywun

I’ve heard my district is “one of the most competitive in the country” this year. Just unbelievable buckets of mail and TV commercials, for example.

No, the reason I don’t get any text is because I don’t give my number out to anyone unless absolutely necessary.

      • Rhywun

        Also, I have a Manhattan prefix (646).

        ?

      • Rhywun

        Or, area code. Whatever.

      • slumbrew

You hipsters with your “646” area code. In my day, the Manhattan area code was 212, and that’s it.

(yes, I’m aware we’re the same age)

      • slumbrew

Ah, you get lumped in with all the Staten Island voters. I figure +3 is close enough they’d be bugging you…

      • slumbrew

The whole “not giving out your number” thing also applies.

      • Rhywun

Yeah, it’s not exactly “conservative” here but it does remain the most most conservative part of Brooklyn. Except maybe for (((those guys))) immediately to the east of me who went for Trump by like 60 points.

I’ve been having idle fantasies about living somewhere that wasn’t so ridiculously blue. R+3 sounds nice.

      • Timeloose

    ACB’s already getting results:

SCOTUS Rules 6-3 That Voting For Biden Is Unconstitutional

According to secret anonymous sources, ACB was overheard saying to a friend: “Yeah, it’s unconstitutional to vote for Joe Biden, mainly because he’s a commie. Also, the constitution doesn’t mention the name ‘Joe Biden’ anywhere which means he’s not eligible to become president because I’m an originalist and that’s totally how originalism works.” According to the unnamed sources, she then turned to a colleague and said, “I hate women!”

10 days without a smartphone. Broke it and didn’t bother to get a new one. Wife finally forced me to pick one up. Too bad cuz I was able to read 2 books (250 pages each) and start a third. Having internet access 24/7 isn’t such a good thing.

    • Seguin

I’ve been considering switching to a flip phone myself…I am essentially addicted to Wikipedia and Youtube. I think I’d be a lot more satisfied with my days if I didn’t have this 24/7 distraction machine on me.

      • straffinrun

Exactly. I’m addicted for sure. I’m leaving it home most weekdays from now on.

He does not consider that in the great chessboard of human society, every single piece has a principle of motion of its own, altogether different from that which the legislature might choose to impress upon it.” -The Theory Of Moral Sentiments, Part VI, Section II, Chapter II, pp. 233-4, para 17.

      The comments do not disappoint.

Fuck that guy. Im 99% sure his income won’t suffer in a shutdown.

      • Ownbestenemy

I would wager that 99% of the people asking for more lockdowns are secure in said lockdowns. Even my lefty Bernie Bro brother stated he advocates for shutdowns knowing it wont hurt or change his routine.

  27. Ownbestenemy

Bets on what the Biden/Dem/Media is going to drop in the next couple of days to try and damage Trump or do you think they have blown their wad so-to-speak in the past couple of months?

Or is the absolute blackout of the Biden/Hunter/China story by the MSM it? I did see they tried another tax leak but that obviously went no where.

Shitty news, folks. The Penna. GOP in the Philly burbs is panicking. Just talked to my GOP committeeman contact in Chester County. It used to be that the Philly suburbs would turn in a GOP vote margin just about enough to offset the City of Philadelphia’s DEM margin. Their internal polling this year indicates the
DEM margin in the Philly burbs is almost equal to the DEM margin in the City! With 50% of the PA vote coming from Philly and the four surrounding counties, Trump will have to take about 75% of the rest of the state in order to win. Kiss PA goodbye.

    • hayeksplosives

      I haz a sad

    • Caput Lupinum

There’s still time for the city to burn itself to the ground, and by God they seem determined to do it.

    • Gadfly

It used to be that the Philly suburbs would turn in a GOP vote margin just about enough to offset the City of Philadelphia’s DEM margin. Their internal polling this year indicates the
DEM margin in the Philly burbs is almost equal to the DEM margin in the City!

Now, if the DEM margin in the burbs is the same as in the city, that’s a massive swing and PA is Biden’s, handily. However, it should be noted that in 2016 Philly and the four surrounding counties all went Hillary, by 67 (Philly), 23 (Delaware), 21 (Montgomery), 9 (Chester), and 1 (Bucks) points. The idea that the Philadelphia burbs are a bastion of Republicans is way outdated, as 3 of those 4 burb counties have gone D every election since 1992, Chester being the only county to ever vote R.

      • Caput Lupinum

Compared to the city, where only 11% of voters are registered as republican, even Montgomery County is a bastion of conservatism at 35%. I can see Philly keeping its normal 90/10 D to R split, but the idea that Montgomery, let alone Bucks County where the registration split is 44% dem to 41% repub, will follow suit without massive fraud doesn’t pass the smell test. Trump likely won’t win any of the counties, though he has a decent chance in Chester and a snowball’s chance at Delaware and Bucks, but I don’t see him falling that far behind Biden.

Either way, I’m still hoping to jettison Philly to Jersey. Or Delaware. Or space.

    • Ownbestenemy

Statements like this make me think otherwise…as his cities devolve into chaos.

      https://www.governor.pa.gov/newsroom/pennsylvanians-urged-to-hand-deliver-mail-ballots-immediately/

“If you haven’t already, voters with mail ballots should immediately hand-deliver your ballot to your county-designated location,” said Gov. Wolf. “Don’t wait until election day. Hand-delivering your own ballot now will give you the peace of mind that your vote will be counted, and your voice will be heard in this historic election.”

Hurry! Don’t change your vote! Get it in there!

      • Tejicano

So I have to wonder if the DNC sat down with Hunter for a few hours to come up with a list of the worst things he can remember from that laptop. They might want to know what else could possibly be coming, and how bad. I can imagine that if they had such a list and knew that what’s been released so far might only be the tip of the iceberg, they might want to get as many votes in as soon as possible.

      • Ownbestenemy

His statement to me has a hint that if you vote in person, on Nov 3rd, you won’t be counted, but could be the cynicism that has been building for the past 20 years.

  29. grrizzly

Lots of Dodgers fans without masks interviewed on TV. Obviously, it’s hard to understand anyone speaking with a mask on.

  30. Ownbestenemy

Newsom is being gracious I see with allowing families to give thanks this year; with a heavy boot on their necks.

“All gatherings must include no more than three households, including hosts and guests, and must be held outdoors, lasting for two hours of less.”

He is also allowing you to use a bathroom in your own home, as long as you sanitize it. I am sure we all have that uncle or grandpa that will absolutely destroy the bathroom.

Somehow you have to maintain 6 feet at all times, between the households.

Put those masks on if you aren’t actively eating.

While talking to one of the servers, she said that they have been very busy lately. I noted that people are saying “fuck it”. She also said that her sister lives in Portland. She says it is a shit hole now and is leaving.

In some states, at each polling place there is a witness from each major party or even an election judge of each party. Idea is to prevent rampant vote fraud, as the mixed table of judges gives you one ballot and you can’t leave with it.

So with the freshly minted 50 different processes for vote-by-mail, where’s the chain of command? The parity of ballot handlers?

This will not be a legitimate election.

    • Ownbestenemy

That has been Trump’s legal team argument on the process of mail-in-ballots.

So far in NV – Dems are outpacing in the mail-in category and Repubs are outpacing in early voting in person/drop off.

Of course, I hate that we even know if they are dem/repub ballots and its only a matter of the next election that we will know actual candidate counts months before election day.

    • Gustave Lytton

The chain of custody & observation by party appointees should start with when a mail in ballot is verified via signature match as a valid ballot to be counted.

      • Ownbestenemy

And all the state governments, during lockdowns/shutdowns/virtual sessions, all managed to put in the necessary controls last minute. At least give me a reach around next time.

Not towards you, I just find it hard to believe that any state was able to do that.

      • Gustave Lytton

They can’t even conduct polls in normal years. Best practices aren’t even on the radar.

    • Sir Digby Classic

I have a feeling that the Dems feel that turn-about is fair play, after having to endure 8 years of W via a SC decision. They deserve to rule after that, doncha know.

Of course, the electoral college came along, scooped up HRC’s win, and gave it to OMB. So, this is the only way to make things right!!

    • Tejicano

Less than half the adult population has faith in 1/3rd of the government at any given 4-year cycle. An extremely high percentage has no faith in another 1/3rd. I would say less than half the country believes in the Federal Constitution and even less even know they have a State Constitution.

ie Michigan: I own 20 acres of land off of highway 31, near a town called Hart. It’s a beautiful area during through Spring and Fall but it becomes a ghost town in the winter. The population drops to about the same as the suburb/city I live in near Grand Rapids. A lot of Michigan retirees, who can’t afford Florida, live up there because housing and land is cheap and the taxes are low.

    • Lord Humungus

My parent used to own an acre on Lake Michigan, a few miles north of Stony Lake. The land was bought for something like $24k back in 1978. The old man said he wished he had bought more! They built a house behind the dunes and I spent most of my weekends and summers there as a pre-teen.

Well time goes by and my parents got old. Their next door neighbor, who is a rich feller, made a cash offer for the land and house. I was happy since trying to sell an expensive house on the Lake is getting difficult. Not a lot of people have the income to do that, and those who do want to build their own custom house; not a white cedar log cabin.
