North Channel Brewing

This is my local brewery, why I haven’t been sooner? IDK, but here we are.

I got there right at opening, after a walk that is its own post, and was greeted by a young, enthusiastic waiter, and proceeded with a pint of Firestorm Smoked Porter, Abv, 8.16%.

Smoking good

Exactly what a Porter should be, smooth, flavorful, and light in the mouth.

5/5

Well done flight

It took a minute for the kids to get the taps up, but I got my flight in good time, a mixed bag indeed.

India Pale Lager, yep, very dry and somewhat sweet, better in the summer I’m sure. Abv 7.89%  4.5/5

Manistees IPA, meh, not an IPA I ever had, no hops. Abv 7.2%,  3/5

Sawmill Stout, very thin for a stout, but warmed up nice. Abv 7.4%  3/5

Salt City Blonde Ale, this is a real nice light-drinking fun citrusy brew, better for summer, it made me sneeze. Abv 5.9% 4/5

Yummy!I told them I was a writer, and can I take pictures, all of a sudden the staff is asking how I thought every beer was, then they brought me samples, and more samples, and a NCB Ale glass, etc.

Mettalicka!!

Brewing goes on here

All up, it’s a nice place to visit at least once.

4 out of 5 overall.

How can an IPA lack hops? Never mind—sounds like a win overall.

Hold on, little microbreweries!! You can survive the COVID economic sabotage!

    • Yusef drives a Kia

thats why its barely an IPA, this aint Detroit as far as the Rules gom Whitmer isn’t welcome in hese parts,

    • Caput Lupinum

Their website states that it has an IBU of 70, which is solidly in the IPA range, which tend to sit between 60 and 80; is definitely supposed to be hoppy, maybe Yusef got a bad batch?

      • Yusef drives a Kia

or Maybe Yusef has had hundreds of IPA’s and can tell you, this ain’t one, they’re Porter is more Stout than theie Stout, stuff like that….

      • Caput Lupinum

Trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, but either way they screwed something up and I trust your tastebuds over their marketing.

      • Nephilium

It also depends on what the original gravity is. High residual sugar will overwhelm a large amount of IBU (which are usually calculated with a flawed formula instead of lab testing).

  2. Nephilium

To keep trends alive, two Cleveland breweries have continued their streak of getting at least one GABF medal each year they’ve been open (Fat Head’s and Masthead).

    • Yusef drives a Kia

I think Stormcloud could put up some good Belgians for GABF, north Channel needs some work, great Schotch Ale though

      • Nephilium

Fat Head’s won this year for their Goggle Fogger Hefeweizen (which is a damned solid one). Masthead won for their Augenblick lager, which I’ll also drink a stunning amount of.

      • Sir Digby Classic

        great Scotch Ale

        Damn, that’s good to hear.

/Can’t enjoy my McEwans Scotch Ale any more.

  3. Rebel Scum

    Salt City Blonde Ale

    Everyone likes a salty blonde.

    *cracks Guinness*

I still can’t get my hands on any fall themed beer so my ‘go-to’ that is good for cool/cold weather will suffice.

    • westernsloper

I went to town today to get some soda and even hit the liquor store for tequila but forgot to get any fall beers. I also forgot my propane bottles to refill. I am forgetful. The few times I have done it I liked getting the flights. Good fun. Thanks Yufus.

      • westernsloper

^not supposed to be a reply

  4. Yusef drives a Kia

NCB New England IPA, again, not real hoppy, but thats fine, it’s a good beer, Citrus and Pine notes with a smooth finish,

Not saying I’m intimately acquainted with the current state of personal attitudes in Taiwanese sports, but after decades of knowing a number of Taiwanese personally I detect a slice of “Sorry dude, just doing my job” in that expression.

      • Chipping Pioneer

Exactly this. When you make a play like this act like you’ve done it before and will do it again.

Also, if you’re going to trot around the bases and high five your teammates, make damn sure that you actually hit it out.

    • Sir Digby Classic

That’s the sort of interesting tactics that Taiwan is gonna need….IYKWIM.

    • Rebel Scum

He’s killing it in Nevada right now.

      • Tejicano

With all the negative press on Trump, articles explaining how he’s expecting to lose, etc., I get a real strong sense of Deja Vu from exactly 4 years ago.

      • Sean

Man, he really is. I turned it on after you mentioned it.

I can watch Ray Bradbury theater reruns later.

      • Nephilium

I’ve got the full run of Ray Bradbury theater on DVD. As well as the full Twilight Zone, original Outer Limits, Tales from the Crypt, and several others.

        /buffs his geek cred

      • Sean

The Bradbury stuff is pretty good. We’ve been watching the Night Gallery recently too.

      • Nephilium

It really is, but I’ve also been a Bradbury fanboy since grade school. Keep in mind that George RR Martin got his start writing for the rebooted Twilight Zone and Outer Limits.

      • Rhywun

The Martian Chronicles is still one of my favoritest things ever.

      • Count Potato

I remember some lame scene when I guy takes off his hair. Or is that something else?

      • Sir Digby Classic

The 80’s TZ, huh? Damn, I loved many of those episode. We got The Cold Equations,

        Voices in the Earth

, and Song of the Younger World.

      • Sir Digby Classic

What in the actual hell….? I’ve been off my computer game a lot–didn’t know it was by that much.

      • C. Anacreon

Did you get to the Night Gallery episode with the gardener little old lady who has a green thumb? I liked that one when it first ran on NBC, and my parents didn’t realize i was up late and watching a show that could give me nightmares.

      • Sean

        Doesn’t sound familiar.

    • hayeksplosives

      Awesome.

Need some chopper mitts with heavy wool liners, when you are driving between jobs. Gloves just aren’t enough. If you’re ever 300 miles West I’ll take you to MikeS’ s hangout and buy you a beer or two. I’ll even be the designated driver, how about that?

      • hayeksplosives

I became a fan of those butane hand warmers when I was hiking in Sweden.

We used them at Dugway Proving Ground too.

      • Fourscore

I have them, used them for ice fishing. Put one in a muff and in between fish the muff/hand warmer combo is great. For deer hunting I just use a muff, hand comes out quietly, but deer hunting weather is usually not so cold.

      • Sir Digby Classic

        I can’t even with all this phrasing….

    • Count Potato

“2 pair Carhartt Flannel lined Jeans”

      Those are great.

That’s a lot of money in clothes though.

  6. DEG

That looks like a good place.

  7. R C Dean

The main thing is to have a local. Looks like you’ve got one, Yusef. Mine is the branch office of sentinel Peak. Their regular brews are solid, their seasonals are usually really good, their food is decent bar food. I’m good.

    How’s the food?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

pretty good burgers, the tacos rock, about all I’ve had so far, i met the owner today and critiqued his Stout, he agrees and is going to make it thicker next run….

    • Rhywun

We don’t even have a target date in NYC for when bars might open again. Uncle Bill said something about “next year” last time he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and bothered to express an opinion on it. Of course, Uncle Andy has the final say on the matter which means yet another media bitch-fight over it some day.

      • Gustave Lytton

If he waits long enough, there won’t be any bars closed. One way or another.

      Cheers!

    • Nephilium

My local added a Jackie O’s coffee blonde and a Left Hand Peanut Butter Milk Stout to the $4 special board. It almost made up for the travesty of a game today.

        I have the Maverick XR-50.

      • Grummun

        The line everyone remembers:

“No matter where you go, there you are.”

But that movie is full of great lines. John LIthgow’s finest work.

      • Rhywun

I like Lithgow a lot. Not familiar with that movie at all.

      • Tundra

It is one of my favorites of all time. Please track it down and dig it!

      • Rhywun

I always dismissed it as silliness beneath me. I’ll give it a chance if I come across it again!

Last shots at the most beautiful range in the world.

Bloke and Chap spend some time at a Swiss shooting range that has had a 143 year run. The range is shutting down due to fall out from Swiss Federal environmental regulations.

    • zwak

There used to be a great shooting range in the Oakland hills, but closed down a few years ago due to “environmental issues.” Every time the city/county would set a benchmark for them on lead abatement they would nail it, but the goalposts kept moving.

It was a serious Olympic caliber range.

      • Animal

Our gun club has a long history in the area. Housing here in Aurora, though, is beginning to grow up in the general area. A couple years back, we were told in the annual meeting, some local homeowners contacted the city complaining about noise from the range and worried about people with guns.

One of the club officers went to the city council meeting where it was discussed. The Mayor at that time told the homeowners, “the gun club has been there since the early nineteen-fifties. It’s an Aurora institution. You knew it was there when you bought your house. For Chrissake, you bought a house on Gun Club Road. You know why it’s called Gun Club Road? Because it was first built for the gun club.”

And that, folks, was the end of that. For now.

        Although probably SW of you.

South west of Alaska? That’s the middle of the Pacific.

    • Semi-Spartan Dad

I went to our backyard range yesterday and today. It’s not a Swiss Alps retreat, but is set on top of a dam in a valley. Beautiful view of a stocked pond just feet from the lane and forest all around. The valley provides a natural backstop ~40 feet high and at least a couple thousand feet long that contains our gunshot noise while also keeping out noise. Nice peaceful fishing spot too.

I finally took the time to set it up properly with a dedicated target frame and distance markers. Wife declared target shooting is her new favorite hobby and that we need to lay in another few thousand rounds of .223/5.56… I asked why she couldn’t have decided this 8 months ago.

      • Gustave Lytton

        Hah hah.

  15. Nephilium

So PA governor Wolf today vetoed a bill to try to save the restaurants and breweries in the area. My two big takeaways from the news report are these:

72% of the House originally voted in favor, and 88% of the Senate voted in favor. Each chamber only needs 67% to get the job done. Similar recent bills have failed during this process.

    Which leads to this one:

If the 2/3 vote is not made to override the veto, we will be publishing which legislators flipped their vote, thus sealing the fate for many businesses in their district, and the state as a whole.

    • Sean

Fuck Tom Wolf. Fuck his famly. I hope they all rot in hell.

      • Nephilium

From your lips to any god’s ears.

I’ve got to say I’m happy to see that second part published online. It’s a website that specializes in beer news for PA, so this is they’re lifeblood as well.

As Halloween rolls up, I’ve thrown up this band to listen to while catching up on threads here.

      • Fourscore

Walz of MN won the Wolf Act Alike Contest, Wolf came in 2nd

    • DEG

      Yep.

A bill to loosen restriction on sports passed with similar numbers. Wolf vetoed it. Enough Democrats flipped that the legislature couldn’t overturn the veto.

I expect the same thing will happen here.

      • Rhywun

        Cowards.

      • Nephilium

That’s why I’ve got some hope for them in that it passed overwhelmingly, and at least one media group is willing to call out those who flip.

      • DEG

Your hopes and my hopes and a lot of other people’s hopes will be dashed.

Sports, especially high school sports, are a big deal in PA. That one failed. This will fail too.

      • Caput Lupinum

That’s the trick, the legislature can’t disappoint me if I never had expectations to begin with.

      • Nephilium

DeWine knew better then to fuck too hard with the breweries here in Ohio. We’ve now got full to go cocktail sales and drinking in parking lots (with written permission of the owner). Of course, breweries in the state always had the option to self distribute and do delivery to those in the state. It just wasn’t profitable to do previously.

/looks at the $6 six pack of 9% triple I had dropped off on my front porch

It may not be profitable to do moving forward either.

      • Gustave Lytton

How many of them voted for it the first time, knowing Wolf would veto it? Have their cake and eat it too.

      • Rhywun

        Exactly. Craven knaves.

    • Count Potato

Why are these governors being such assholes? It certainly can’t help their careers.

      • Tundra

        Power corrupts.

They are freaked out that people are obeying them.

They will be just as freaked out as they are selected to adorn light fixtures.

      • Rhywun

I haven’t seen any evidence that it isn’t helping their careers.

      • kbolino

This, plus power trip, plus the courts have their backs. The PA Supreme Court ruled that the only accountability provision in the very bill that gives Wolf his emergency powers unconstitutional, but not the bill itself. So they essentially rewrote legislation to give the governor more power, even though the state constitution assigns no such power to the governor in the first place. One would think that striking the parts of statutes the governor doesn’t like but keeping the parts he does would raise series separation of powers concerns, but apparently you can eat your cake and have it too.

    • Homple

      • Count Potato

I just looked it up. It was 1994 when Tekken came out. Tekken 2 was a year later. Definitely past the age of arcades.

    • DEG

A friend of mine in PA has a restaurant. He’s not open for indoor dining, outdoor and take out only. Indoor dining doesn’t make sense for him given the lay out and Gauleiter Wolf’s restrictions.

He’s been using the quiet times to make lemonade from lemons. He wanted to put a small arcade in the back part of the restaurant. He’s been working through his backlog of arcade machines, restoring them and getting them ready.

At some point, he’ll be able to open for indoor dining and show off his new arcade.

      • Tundra

        Smart.

I would never open a bar, but if I did, it would have a back room full of old school pinball and video games.

The Galaga game would be for me only, however.

      • Animal

        You thought we wouldn’t notice.

        But we did.

      • Nephilium

Here in Ohio we’ve got a couple of “barcades”, pinball still costs $.25-$.50 a game, but cabinets are free to play as long as you (or someone in your party) is drinking. They’ve been hurt badly by the lockdowns which also prohibited bar games (with the exception of the Ohio Lottery touchscreens).

  17. Count Potato

OT: I was traveling this week and actually watched a couple movies on the flights.

Ford vs Ferrari. Awesome. I might buy it.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Fun as hell. Went a direction I didn’t expect. I briefly stopped hating DiCaprio. Pitt was hilarious. I loved Brandy the dog.

Those might have been the first ‘new’ movies I’ve watched in 2020. Fuck this year.

    • Rhywun

I liked DiCaprio in Inception. I don’t care for him either but it worked.

      • Tundra

I’ve liked him in most of his movies. He’s really good. I am able to suspend hatred for a couple hours periodically for entertainment! 😉

      • LJW

I liked it, but it was too long. Much of it could have been cut out.

      • Tundra

Maybe, but his movies are mostly like that.

      • Count Potato

        Not that I’ve noticed.

I miss going out for a beer. The last time I went, maybe back in June, was depressing enough that I swore it off until the restrictions are lifted entirely. The limited capacity, the masked waitstaff, no bar seating, everyone seemed sedate and unhappy. Given our governor is angling for a job in Biden’s White House, I doubt I’ll be going out again this year.

    • Tundra

I’ve been going out more. I need the interaction. The wait staff in every place I’ve been are exceptional.

One of the positives from this fucking shit-show might be a refocus on customer service.

      • Nephilium

        ^this^

For fucks sakes, I talked to a Stillers fan today at a bar in suburban Cleveland. I also figure since I’m tipping heavy during these times I can build up some good will for (if) when things open up fully again.

      • Rhywun

I’m with commode. I’m not a huge enough fan of that stuff in the best of times; I’m not participating again until the OLD NORMAL returns.

      • DEG

I’ve been going out more too.

      • Ownbestenemy

We have made it our goal to reward that customer service and places that are trying to rope in customers.

Those who would give up beer to obtain a little temporary sobriety deserve neither.

      • Tejicano

        Genuine LOL

      • Rhywun

I don’t drink enough beer to kill me. It’s the potatoes that are doing it, I suspect.

      • Count Potato

        RACIST!!

      • Count Potato

        “Carbs will kill you.”

Nah. There are hispanics and Italians in their 90’s. My grandfather was 96.

This weekend was a strange one for me, the spin class instructor tried to argue that I wasn’t a middle aged fat man (I had said I miss being able to change before and after classes). And two rides the girlfriend wanted to ride in Cedar Point had issues with my legs. One due to length, another due to thickness.

    • LJW

Pretty sure my knees would explode if I attempted that. The other day I was trying to show my daughter how to jump off a swing and I damn near killed myself.

      • Tundra

The key words are ‘damn near’.

That has to be realfake. I don’t see anybody holding his beer.

Evening glibbies. Makes sense to have the fire pit going as its “cooler” now in Vegas. Fire, sounds of crickets and critters, and a mellow drink to end the weekend.

    • Mojeaux the Malevolent

Planning on a micro bonfire in the firepit Thursday to clean up extraneous lumber.

      • Ownbestenemy

Right? I love how the party full of Devotional Candles for Saint RBG, Saint Hillary, etc talks so much shit about the Trump Cult.

If these people stopped lighting incense to the Obama Messiah Shrine maybe they could have some room to criticize, but every last one are just slobbery handmaidens to their own personality cult.

The projection and denial they have could fill an entire psychiatric medicine library of case studies. Just liking OMB is too much for them.

  24. Sir Digby Classic

An interesting take on OMB’s town hall: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8L4nUuHxsY

I think everyone here hates the concept of ‘loyalty oaths’ in most situations. I can say that these reverse loyalty oaths; “Will you disavow X, Mr. Prez?” are just as poisonous, especially when it’s a cadre of leftists from any and all position of societal influence. It definitely opens them up to the turn-about question, “Will you disavow Y?”

    • Sir Digby Classic

Also–if you watch, notice the little question box in the Twitter: Are Chiefs’ fans racist?”

Mojo–will YOU disavow racism? Hmmm? ??

      • PieInTheSky

Are Chiefs’ fans racist? – trick question. All white ones are, all non-white are not

Mornin’ Glibsters! Yesterday sucked hind tit because one of my sites had a waxing crew in on Saturday. I had to move everything back on my own. Yes, I’m old and feebler. My aching back…

    • Gender Traitor

Mornin’, Fes. Sorry ’bout your back.

      • Festus' Mustache

I’ll live but coming back from these things gets harder as the years carry on. Saturday yard work took a toll, too. How many years I have left doing this work is very much up in the air. Thanks for your tea and sympathy ;-).

    • l0b0t

Sorry to hear that sir. At our place, we’ve gotten sick from the floor guys using the propane powered floor stripper inside our poorly ventilated store. But, at least, their team moves and returns all the fixtures. Maybe a nice hot soak in the bath with some Epsom salts and a good nap?

Playing six or seven games om Friday and Saturday and partying until the wee hours takes a lot out of you. Three hours later you’re standing in the outfield doing your best turtle eyes impression. Buddy’s wife had some Midol that she dispensed to the team and we never looked back after that. Poor jim, puking over the fence in right field between at bats… We’d all get up on Monday and head to work like it was nothing.

      • Tres Cool

Midol is really just caffeine + paracetamol. So mind your liver whilst drinking on it.

      • Festus' Mustache

This was 25 years ago. Midol is the least of my worries in current year 🙂
