Sunday Evening Open Post and SPecial Announcement

by | Oct 25, 2020 | Admin, Open Post | 377 comments

I’ve been reliably informed that the software running our server is going to be upgraded on Tuesday. There shouldn’t be much, if any, downtime, but I wanted to warn you all now.

Also, due to some special programming that is coming this week, I will be shutting everyone out of the backend of the site from tomorrow morning around 1000 GlibTime to sometime later in the week. This includes all the Contributors, Editorial Staff, and, yes, even TPTB. Admins will be able to access the backend as needed per usual.

Don’t be alarmed when you login and it doesn’t present your usual writing/editing dashboard. Your privileges will be restored.

If you have writing in progress, don’t worry, it will still be there when you are allowed back in. If you are just starting an idea, you might want to write it in some other app until I open the back of the site again. That way, you can just paste in your content as soon as you have access.

Articles and commenting thereon will continue to be available throughout.

If you have any questions or comments, please direct them to my legal counsel for this project, STEVE SMITH, ESQ.

You may now proceed to your Sunday Night Open Post!

I've got an idea! How about we just stick to the Constitution as written and then the government can leave me the fuck alone.

OK, thanks for letting us all know 🙂

All my unfinished articles are offline…

    • Nephilium

This is why I do my writing in something else, then clean up the formatting here.

Thanks for all the work SP, it truly is appreciated.

      • Count Potato

Tonio wrote a very good primer on how to make glibs articles.

So I should write it all down and submit.

    Phrasing.

HM is probably admin so all is right with the world.

I have no idea, do you?

Not usually. I can’t even do crazy eyes.

No need, we know what you mean by links.

See, that’s worrying to me. Crazy eyes? Eh, they’re tipping their hand. It’s the cold, dead, emotionless eyes you have to worry about. I’m sure when my wife finally does the calculations and sees that yes, she can live a very nice life on the proceeds from my life insurance, the last thing I will see is the steady, steely grey/green eyes staring at me…

      • R C Dean

I’m mystified that Mrs. Dean hasn’t done the math yet. I’m clearly worth more dead.

      Pure evil.

      • Ayn Random Variation

That must be the talking point they have been pushing on NPR, because I have been hearing for at least the past week that Hillary lost because of the last minute sneak attack by the Russians, so now they have to be careful about what they let us sheep see.

Just like they were careful about not reporting on Trump paying $750 in taxes 2 days before the 1st debate. All of the media outlets and “platforms” were careful to validate that before reporting it.

      • Tejicano

        Yup. Totes gospel.

It had nothing to do with her burning bridges with much of flyover America with that “deplorables” comment. Nope, nothing to do with that attitude at all.

    • Chafed

The piece by Matt Taibbi that Greenwald references is quite good.

      • Count Potato

The one I posted this morning?

    • Drake

I’ve lost track what’s been officially confirmed and rumors. Nude photos of Hunter and his niece, underage Chinese girls, photos of Chris Coons’ daughter who Joe famously molested in public. And a diary from Joe’s daughter? I need a scorecard of what is real and if any of it is actually debunked. And obviously selling out U.S. foreign policy and using his son as the bag man.

SP the software upgrade is just a dress rehearsal for when Trump looses the election and shuts down the internet during his coup afterwards! Why else would it be happening exactly a week before the election?!?!

Yesterday’s World Series Game 4 was maybe the best WS game ever. The Dodgers lost to the Rays. The Dodgers are the better team, hands down, but Tampa was hella good this year. Normally…I make it a fucking rule to NEVER ROOT for the American League because the DH is a fucking stupid rule and no one should ever like it or use it or….I had best stop myself. But this year! Branch Covidians wanted the DH for both leagues! I am strongly suspecting that means it is now just the rule from now on….But at least I get to root for the underdog this year!

Clayton Kershaw is the best pitcher on the planet. He plays for LA. His salary, $31M/year off the top of my head, is more than the Rays’ entire budget. I’m OK rooting for the AL this year and this year only.

    “This game, which had been 1-0, then 2-0, then 2-1, then 3-1, then 3-2, then 4-2, then 5-4, then 6-5, then 6-6, then 7-6 and finally 8-7, ”

That’s NUTS. And the kid who got the winning hit ain’t Mickey Mantle. He his .196 this year. Didn’t play in the ALCS. Not on the roster. He’s a defensive replacement. But it was on his shoulders. Down 7-6. Botton 9th. Two outs. Two men on. Two strikes. Phillips up to hit. Got a base hit! Center field made an error and threw in late…and then the catcher made an error…and the winning run slapped home plate to end it! Series tied 2-2!!!

If that were Game 7, that would hands down have been the most exciting game ever played. No doubt. The only thing I think is better…and I am biased as hell here…is Game 7 when the Cubs won the championship in extra innings.

Game 5 is on in 45 min. Kershaw is going to pitch. But there no matter what will be a Game 6. Get your popcorn. This is it. This is one of the main things that gives me happiness in my life. Music, sex, baseball, reading/writing. I’d say those are all the top tier. Let’s get going. Go Tampa.

      • Ted S.

Not Game 7 that year? (Or Game 7 10 years earlier?)

      • Ayn Random Variation

I’ve NPR’d that game from my memory.

      • Evan from Evansville

I hate the Yankees, so that’s a hard sell. No one on and two out? Impressive, I admit. But a homer doesn’t beat a shitty hitter coming through when he was (really) the only option left. (They did have a backup catcher who could pinch hit, but he’s an even worse hitter.)

And the errors and the guy on first falling over after rounding third cuz of the first error…and then getting up with the second error and pretty much crawling to home? Jeter’s accomplishment was awesome. But he’s got Legend Status for what he did with the Yanks. (I do agree he was not the best shortstop ever….but he could hit. Average but not power usually. And that does elevate what he was able to do there to the opposite field.)

The Cubs broke a a hilariously famous draught in Game 7 in extras. In dramatic fashion. Ya…ya can’t beat that. Even if you aren’t a rabid Cubs fan like I am.

      • Ayn Random Variation

Between being a Yankees fan and the rawness, at the time, of 9/11, I won’t pretend to be objective about this.

      • peachy rex

Game 7 in 2001 is awfully hard to top, given how the series had gone, and the, um, broader context.

      • pistoffnick

        “I hate the Yankees…”

I knew there was a reason I liked you.

      • mock-star

Game 7 of the 1960 WS is the best one. Its anti-science to suggest otherwise.

    • The Bearded Hobbit

I’ve heard that baseball does not exist in the US anymore, replaced by something called “DH ball”.

      • Pi Guy

Even as a lifelong Orioles fan I’d also prefer the pitchers have to stand in the box a couple times every start.

        No DH

      • Homple

Before long professional baseball will become professional Tee Ball. To hell with it.

    • Pi Guy

Indeed a great game. Best one I’ve watched.

    • I'm Here To Help

My wife is German, and she’s been to one baseball game in her life (she thinks). But we’ve been watching all the Tampa sports ball teams to support the locals. She was going nuts during the game last night. Granted, she didn’t understand half of what was happening, but she thoroughly enjoyed it.

But it doesn’t look like Tampa is going to be doing much tonight. Once again leaving Glasnow in too long. Sadly, “too long” tonight is the top of the 2nd…

Smart move. The media will carry his water, starting with tonight’s 60 Minutes, which has been promoted during every commercial break in the football games.

      • Sean

Probably the best move the campaign could make strategically. Doesn’t mean it can’t hurt him.

    • The Hyperbole

Meh, its over anyway. He’s not changing any mind or energizing the base, most people are voting for or against of Trump, Biden is irrelevant.

      • Sean

        “Biden is irrelevant.”

        Nice summation.

      • Rhywun

        Yup.

      • westernsloper

        A bit unprecedented though.

      • Sean

It’s crazy. That’s how much their campaign lacks in substance and messaging.

      • westernsloper

The last debate made the handlers reel him in. He might answer a reporters question and tell people he will end fossil fuels again. Best to keep him with the friendlies.

        Unfortunately, Harris is not irrelevant.

Neither can she. But, that’s a different sort of ‘can’t’.

    • blackjack

It’s part of the mail in vote election fixing scheme. That’s how they won the house and took all the reliably red districs here in CA. The next election after that, they started reworking the polling places. By “reworking” I mean whittling them down to about a third of the previous amount. The lines were all the way around the block. This time they were aided by all the paranoia theater. That way, all the votes come in by mail and there’s no one there to keep track of them. Nobody gets a receipt and there’s no proof of anything. They’ll never lose another election. That’s why Biden really doesn’t need to lift a finger. He has it in the bag.

How does one look at politics in 2020 and say, Oh yeah, it’s racism that’s the biggest problem we face? Especially when the left writes off the most vocal, unapologetic bigots around because they wrote into their bylaws that their bigots don’t count as bigots.

left libertarians are progs who quibble over how much of a boot to put on the throat of the citizenry.

Let me make it clear. A philosophy that is based around self ownership has no cutouts for color or gender or orientation or religious affiliation. To the extent that “inclusiveness” requires cutouts for those groups, it is not libertarian.

      • Gustave Lytton

They don’t quibble about how much boot really either. They just don’t like to admit to others, or themselves, how much boot is needed or the logical conclusions of their fantasies.

But for me, the “liberty to starve and die from treatable illness” is a mockery of the term liberty.

If you are worried about liberty, then you have no issue with these problems being handled via private, voluntary transactions. Or, are you one of those “yes, but” types of self-described libertarians?

      Kipling supplies the reply:

      Dane-geld

IT IS always a temptation to an armed and agile nation
To call upon a neighbour and to say: –
“We invaded you last night – we are quite prepared to fight,
Unless you pay us cash to go away.”

And that is called asking for Dane-geld,
And the people who ask it explain
That you’ve only to pay ’em the Dane-geld
And then you’ll get rid of the Dane!

It is always a temptation for a rich and lazy nation,
To puff and look important and to say: –
“Though we know we should defeat you,
we have not the time to meet you.
We will therefore pay you cash to go away.”

      And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we’ve proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.

It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
      For fear they should succumb and go astray;
So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
You will find it better policy to say: —

      “We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
      No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that plays it is lost!”

Us: I am not a number, I’m a free man!

ENB: I am a number! As long as you don’t think anything icky, except sexwork, should be legal, and you are a free inclusive person with reasonable restrictions on that other icky Liberty.

      • Sir Digby Classic

Well, she hasn’t really done herself any favors with the arguments and stances she indulges in.

      • PieInTheSky

while that is true that cannot be automatically reduced to only cares of sexwork.

While I understand the marketing need of some libertarians to detach themselves from icky “racism” (real or imagined), ENB does not seem to find a good way of doing so.

      • Sir Digby Classic

I’m sure she has written about other issues, but, I think she was hired by Reason with ‘sex work’ as her main focus. With that, she seems to find other areas where freedom/liberty is more of a hinderance. That, and her (understandably) close association with her husband and his public writings.

Basically, for me, they aren’t really people I would want to hang out with. But, if she wants to be in the fold, so to speak, fine. But, she’s gonna get push-back on some of her takes.

      • PieInTheSky

I think she was hired by Reason with ‘sex work’ as her main focus – well yes this part is clear… many writers have some main focus areas

With that, she seems to find other areas where freedom/liberty is more of a hinderance – probably but I am not sure to the extent people here think

But, she’s gonna get push-back on some of her takes. – yes but there is pushback and there is pushback

      • CPRM

I don’t think so. She has denounced so many other forms of liberty over the years I don’t even know what she thinks is a ‘Libertarian’ government besides a mixed market prog government where sex work is legal.

      • PieInTheSky

. She has denounced so many other forms of liberty over the years – like what? and define over the years… 10 years ago is less relevant that 2 years ago.

That would presume she has adjusted or changed older stances. If she’s taking the same stances as she was 10 years ago, especially in light of new info and being around libertarians as a part of her work, I’d say those are just as relevant.

      • PieInTheSky

Yes. I have never believed ENB is full libertarian and I thing libertarian feminism is bullshit, but I have seen enough from ENB to believe she is at least libertarian leaning, and not what would be called a ” prog “

      • Sir Digby Classic

I agree with that…for the most part. I mean, I work for a police department, which isn’t high on the list of liberty-based jobs. But, she does have some areas that don’t seem to suggest she applied a liberty view to them.

Like I said, having her in the fold is fine with me, but, I wouldn’t really want to hang out with her.

Hey guys… I have been away from keyboard for a minute, so I missed a bunch of discussion here. So risking going over already plowed ground, I just have to point out:

All of the outlets that have refused to cover the “unverified” laptop that is verified both internally and by others involved went on to cover Giuliani and Borat as if it were a real story of import.

Now we have seen it. It is clear… As one would have suspected, the entire bit about Giuliani lying on a bed and putting his hand down his pants during an interview was a lie from start to finish. No rational person could have believed otherwise.

So here we have the juxtaposition. The same people who refuse to cover the story of Joe Biden being on the take… Verified by one of the conspirators… That is fake news and must be ignored.

But the story of a literal fake news story that is sold as being a fake news story and intentionally edited to lie about what really happened for the purpose of holding Giuliani up to ridicule? That one we cover as a serious news story.

Bonus moment for me was when people like Brian Shelter managed to denounce the laptop story as disinformation while weaving in attacks on Giuliani’s credibility because he tries to have sex with 15 years old network reporters.

Yes, that literally happened all in the same sentence. Also guilty, Andrea Mitchell and Chuck Todd. Don’t know how many others, but probably most.

    • Sir Digby Classic

Don’t forget that SB Cohen, Seth Rogen, et al, are all proto-commies; they literally attended a socialist summer camp in their youth, which is where they met.

They keep talking about it not being verified, but there’s literal fucking video of this guy smoking crack with underage girls (to include his cousin) that’s been released online. It’s not that it’s difficult to verify – it’s that they don’t want to do it.

The money shot is her claiming she was born to rule, but this is a close runner up for me. No, wait, I read further into the article and…

“Well, I think I live rent-free in his head,” she said. “He does not live rent-free in my head, because I have very little regard for him.”

It is as ugly as she and her daughter are.
