Thursday Afternoon SPrightly Links

Greetings, Glib friends and others.

Two days after the election, the politicians keep politicianing. The usual suspects are screaming on both sides of the Dem/Rep line. Bureaucrats are being themselves. Journalists and pundits keep talking incessantly and thinking that what they have to say is important. In other news, water is wet.

While we wait to find out which group of power-hungry, mendacious, anti-Constitution people will be infringing on our liberty coming up in January, I’ve been Getting Stuff Done while pretty much ignoring all of the stuff happening in that previous paragraph. Except the part about water being wet. That’s actually useful.

Let’s energetically look at some links!

And some music about energy!

I hope you all find some peace and joy in your life this week.

The country is so divided now, I don’t know how things ever go back to people just mostly getting along.

Don’t worry. Biden assures us that he is a leftist authoritarian Democratic candidate but he will rule the deplorables with an iron fist be an American president.

    • The Other Kevin

I saw that speech. All I could think of is, “We’re all Americans. Except for your deplorables and white supremacists.”

    • juris imprudent

The only solution for this division is for all those damned sinners to repent!

…but in the end this election was a contest between our better and worse angels.

    • Agent Cooper

“The country is so divided now, I don’t know how things ever go back to people just mostly getting along.”

Most people do just mostly get along.

      • Gadfly

Most people do just mostly get along.

There’s a reason for that old advice of not talking politics or religion in polite company. When you are not insulting others most cherished beliefs or having your own insulted, there’s a lot more room for common ground.

      • Heroic Mulatto

That’s the unspoken social contract in countries like the US that are culturally pluralistic. But Nationalist Populism is a hell of a drug.

      • Count Potato

That’s not who I see injecting politics into everything.

      • Hyperion

The commies have been injecting their sick fucking demented version of politics (religion) into society since before the Bolshevik revolution.

And they’re not going to accept that you don’t want to play that game.

It doesn’t matter that almost everyone is not interested in playing their game of happy happy workers in utopia, you will not be given a chance to not participate.

      • Galt1138

Yep. It’s why companies have things like “Inclusion” groups, and “unconscious bias” training (which I had to sit through two hours of this morning).

P.S. Hi, Glibs! I’ve been remiss in checking the site for a good 2 – 3 months, plus I’ve been really busy with work (somehow I’m busier now since working remotely).
        Hope you’re all doing well!

      • Hyperion

“somehow I’m busier now since working remotely).”

        Aren’t we all?

Haven’t been to a client’s office in more than 6 months. Used to go a couple times a week. Being told we will never go back twice a week or more, ever. Good, I have no plans to go back, I can do everything I need to do from this desk.

      • Gadfly

But Nationalist Populism is a hell of a drug.

In fairness, it’s not just the NatPops who are against pluralism. A lot of people who style themselves cosmopolitan are as well.

  2. Count Potato

“We can learn from Britain’s current struggles that unless or until we drastically improve our alternative energy and electricity storage technology, we are not yet able to engage in a meaning transition.”

So water is wet, and it’s dark at night? This website is so educational.

    • Count Potato

“The reason for this warning was that a mass of cold, calm air moved over the U.K.”

This is surprising because you never read Shakespeare, Dickens, or a weather report?

    • juris imprudent

Well you see the problem is that they haven’t yet identified as a sunny, clear, warm climate. You have to believe in your new identity before you can transition.

      • Ted S.

The climate identifies itself that way. What kind of a phobe are you?

    • Gadfly

While there may be some yet undreamed of breakthrough on the energy storage front sometime in the future, it would be the height of folly to make plans assuming that will happen. IIRC, all the batteries in the world could store 5 min of the American power grid’s output. We are a long way from being able to rely on an electric grid that must rely on batteries.

    • Pope Jimbo

Just wait until we all get so good at cutting our carbon footprint that Gaia starts to cool and the Gulf Stream stops sending all that super warm water up to England. Think of the energy they’ll need then.

  3. juris imprudent

If the Democrats managed a significant conspiracy to pull of the presidential election, someone sure screwed the pooch for the House.

    • Gadfly

Yeah, RCP is showing the Dems losing from 8-13 seats, and a 13 seat loss would put them at a very slim 4 seat majority. That plus a slim R lead in the Senate should put the brakes on the worst leftist impulses for the next two years.

It should be noted, however, that if there are any shenanigans going on with votes, it wouldn’t affect the House at all. The most shady vote reporting places have all been big cities, and any cheating done in a big city will be confined to its House districts, which are probably going blue fair and square anyways, so it would not move the needle a bit.

    • Hyperion

How bad is it? I can’t even tell from the Foxnews election results. And I don’t feel like digging into it, I’m trying to ignore the entire clusterfuck right now.

But the House dems still have the majority, why does it matter the numbers? +1 seat is still the majority.

      • juris imprudent

Because all of those members that aren’t in AOC-like districts (i.e. you could run Hitler as long as he has the “D” attached) aren’t going to sacrifice themselves on the altar of progressivism. They want to get re-elected and if that means shutting up a few wing-nuts of the left, they don’t have a problem with that.

      • Hyperion

SanFran Nance, Maxiepad, and Schmoobz are all that is left of the old school to try to prop up BIden. They’re all about to meet their expiration date.

Meet the new angry left. Snowflake dumbfucks who think they are having a revolution. Yeah, from you mum’s basement, you silly fools, you’ll be the first to die in your revolution. ‘Oh muh gawds, that shit is real, it wasn’t like Call of Duty at all! They just blew my friens brains out all over shit place!’ Enjoy your prizes, you fucking fools.

      • DenverJ

Well, if the presidential election goes to the House, each State gets one vote, not each Rep. So, it might swing a state or two into the Republican camp. I believe they already had more states, but this assures it.

    • Grumbletarian

You can’t flips sets in Texas by stuffing ballot boxes in Michigan. I’m sure the Dems are working on fixing that loophole though.

      • juris imprudent

Where are the stuffed boxes in Michigan? The total congressional district vote is awfully damn close to the presidential vote in the state. And the main Detroit districts were below the average number of votes for the other districts (which would be a very weird way of stuffing via a Detroit Democratic machine).

      • Gadfly

Just curious, where are you getting that info? CNN was showing a 140,000 vote discrepancy between the presidential and congressional races. I haven’t looked at other sources, and there might be better info out there.

  4. Florida Man

I’m warming towards electric vehicles. If they can get the range to the conventional equivalent of an oil change, I think they takeover. Simpler, less maintenance, improved performance, more quiet. I will miss ICE but I’m sure people missed their horses at first.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

I’m warming to them simply because I’m starting to like Elon Musk. The guy is a madman. He’s made EVs a valid option and he gave us SpaceX. One of those goals would be an incredible life achievement, two is phenomenal.

      • Count Potato

He also had sex with Amber Heard without physical injury.

      • Hyperion

I’ve always liked Musk. But I’ve always like Trump as well.

I want guys who get shit done, I don’t give a fuck how crazy or how big of assholes they are. Look at most of the great movers and doers from history. Not many of them were nice guys. Nice guys are overrated to a ridiculous degree these days.

      • DenverJ

Isn’t he also the guy ruining our. Ight skies by launching a bazillion satellites?

      • Hyperion

Get that shit online already. I want it, like yesterday.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

For all of the fuss people made about that a few months ago, I’ve never heard any astronomers bitching about those satellites. big non-issue

    • Not Adahn

I wouldn’t miss ICEs if the driving experience of EVs was equal/better. At all.

My very limited experience with them (Tesla model X) is that the ergos are a bit hinky even if the acceleraiton etc are good. Also range IS a performance metric.

      • UnCivilServant

Range and recharge time are the dealbreakers. If I can’t get four hundred miles on a ten minute transaction for refuelling/recharging, none of the other factors matter.

      • Gadfly

I’m here as well. Plus the electric vehicle batteries seem to still need some work to get to the point where the technology can maintain the theoretical range. It’s just anecdotal, but I’ve heard the vehicles don’t achieve/maintain the range they promise. I’m not against electric vehicles per se, but they still seem significantly inferior at present.

      • UnCivilServant

I had initially typed 500 miles (the theoretical range of my car) but remembered I only get 460 or so between fills, so I cut it to a true value.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

I wouldn’t miss ICEs if the driving experience of EVs was equal/better. At all.

        Agreed.

    • R C Dean

If they can get the range to the conventional equivalent of an oil change

I doubt there is any conceivable battery technology that would give a 5,000 mile range.

Onboard fusion or fission, sure. But that’s a loooong way off.

      • Certified Public Asshat

We might want to get to 500 mile range first, which would actually be pretty solid for me.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

500 mile with a less than hour recharge would meet 90+% of commuter car requirements.

Get the battery longevity up to the equivalent of the typical rebuild mileage on a IC engine and you’re there.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

I still think Elon was right to try at a fast battery swap. That has the potential to be faster than a gas up.

      • dorvinion

If you want to drive 500 miles with somewhere between 40-60 minutes spent charging you can do that today with a Model 3. You’d probably have to make 3 stops, but could be done on 2 (might actually take longer though)

I do a 400 mile trip with some regularity and I spend only 30 minutes charging. Most of that 30 minutes I’m occupied with food and bathroom break so it doesn’t really take but maybe 5 minutes more than the same trip on gas.

    • Agent Cooper

      I do like the Rivians*.

      *-not a Star Trek reference.

    • dorvinion

Believe it or not, most of the problems people think they’d have with an EV have been resolved, are very close to being resolved, or are are not as big of a downside as people imagine them to be.

I’ll spare everyone my usual long EV booster bit and just say that (ignoring price), if you have a way to charge it at home, 90% of people could fit one of today’s long range EVs (anything advertising 300+ miles of range) into their daily driving as well as their road trip driving, and they could do it without having to make any sacrifices*

I will hit on one thing however. “I need to be able to charge it in 10 minutes”

Its not as necessary as you’d think, its almost possible today, the 10 minute charge won’t be exactly what you expect, but it will satisfy even the toughest critic.

      * Sacrifices start to become necessary to travel > 500 miles in a single day (>300 miles in winter)

Well Biden was clued in that they were more diverse than the community of black voters.

The nuanced and sometimes dissonant political preferences shown by Latino voters in the 2020 presidential election have sparked bewilderment and soul-searching among Democrats as the party lost significant ground with Latinos in Florida and Texas over the past four years.

    • KOVIDKristen

It’s almost as if a huge number of Latinos are socially conservative & hard-working instead of woke & lazy.

    • Viking1865

Biden even as a shell has forgotten more about retail politics than the millenial morons that populate the media will ever learn in a dozen lifetimes.

The stupid fucking country club Republicans have squandered 20 years with the Latino vote thinking amnesty and a few “cut the capital gains tax!!!” speeches delivered in Spanish would win the bloc over to there side.

8 hours of sleep doesn’t work for me and I think that before the industrial revolution of 9-5 jobs, it didn’t really exist.

      • DenverJ

Before the industrial revolution you slept when it was dark.

There’s been a few debates I’ve watched between foot-soldier climate change fanatics and guys like Alex Epstein.

Invariably, and I mean invariably, the foot soldiers are motivated by a hatred of gluttony; they see people consuming large amounts of energy as being sinful gluttons, and want them to be forced to live virtuous energy-starved lives.

These people will never promote anything that will make our lives better. They want us to live like the austere religious scholars they revere.

      • juris imprudent

Honestly, I’d take an imam over McKibben.

      • Viking1865

And yet I see so few of them walk like they talk. True environmentalism is a lifestyle choice.

Live in a small home within a couple miles of your work, and travel there via foot or bike as often as possible. Buy a used Japanese hatchback and drive it for 300,000 miles. Wash your clothes and dishes by hand. Practice minimalist consumer spending. Use it Up, Wear it Out, Make it Do, or Do Without. Grow vegetables in your garden, eat eggs from your chickens, limit your meat consumption.

I cannot fucking stand being lectured on the environment by people who think of themselves as Eco Warriors but live in huge houses, driving Teslas, buying lots and lots of stuff, ordering Amazon five times a week, etc etc.

It is a religion, and I judge most religious people by their adherence to their actual faith. I consider Learjet environmentalists on a par with Joel Osteen.

ROFLOL. The greens have brought coal back.

Seriously, though, I can’t comprehend how more people don’t see the utterly obvious problem with wind and solar as alternative forms of energy. The people making these decisions must have literally no knowledge about how power works, or be so blinded by their ideology that they ignore it. You need consistent, reliable sources of energy to power the electric grid, and wind and solar ain’t it. Nuclear, hydro, and geothermal are the way to go if you want a green future.

    • Viking1865

Hey, I support anyone voting for Jo. I think there were libertarian cases to vote for Jo or for Trump. I remain convinced that the Democratic Party of 2020 has not a single libertarian policy position. It’s not pro peace, it’s not anti-Drug War, and it’s certainly not in favor of dismantling things like DHS or repealing the Patriot Act.

In WI in 2016 the Greens got enough votes to make up the difference. So the Democrats kicked the Greens off the ballot in 2020. Because they play hardball politics to win, and don’t give a damn about principles.

      • Heroic Mulatto

So the Democrats kicked the Greens off the ballot in 2020.

They did that by giving them a seat at the table. On the other hand, high off of their successful takeover of the GOP, NatPops, spent the past 4 years shitting in libertarians’ mouths with scathing attacks in places like the Daily Caller, Human Events, American Greatness, etc. and gleefuly shanked Thomas Massie in the back when he reminded everyone that we ran out of money a long time ago. The list of abuses go on and on, and well, you see the result.

Seeing Van Jones cry on election night because it wasn’t a “Blue Wave” made my day. Seeing a piece of shit like Will Chamberlain cry over libertarian “spoiler votes” made my decade.

      • Viking1865

Uh no, the Democratic government of Wisconsin pulled them from the ballot because the Green Party pulled votes from Clinton in 2016. I’m talking about ballot access, not policy.

I agree with the rest of what you said.

Once again (and regardless of any fraud in this election) the entire vote difference for total votes between R and D candidates is taken up in the Democratic People’s Republic of Commiefornistan. Historically, philosophically and politically illiterate assholes are advocating that the population centers of CA choose the president when they advocate national popular plurality vote.

  23. The Hyperbole

    • Ownbestenemy

I said before for the following scenarios – ignoring your snark, but it was seen:

Trump has lived his business career in the courts, as probably most do at that level. He seems to adhere to those court cases and their outcomes. That is pretty much what we ask of anything if it comes to courts. In this manner, he has every avenue available to him to seek that out. Here is how I see it play out.

Courts hear the cases, some numbers move, Trump loses the ultimate fight and he concedes the White House in spectacular Trump fashion – but nevertheless he leaves.

Courts hear the cases, some numbers move, Trump wins the ultimate fight and Biden appeals (as he should, unless its SCOTUS battle) and refuses to concede. Giving us a two-president government.

Courts refuse to listen to the cases, and we all die.

      • Rebel Scum

As Sean said, he needs to fight this (through every legal channel) to the end.

      • Ownbestenemy

If he were effective on conveying his case and had an actual unbiased press, its an appealing argument to take the the People. We do not have either of those so even though I understand what he is saying, it comes off as a bit of petulance

      • Rebel Scum

He needs to shut up (including Giuliani) about it and let his legal team handle it.

        an actual unbiased press

There would be no problem because he would be winning in a Reagan-esque landslide regardless. Plus Dem shenanigans would be called out and examined instead of covered for.

      • Ownbestenemy

I am torn on if he should or should not shut up. If he loses, it has in the back of people’s minds about shenanigans brought up by the president and not some tiny hole in the wall website. If he wins, it hurts him but he wasn’t gaining any love anyway after this election.

      • Sean

I thought illegitimate ballots were supposed to be tossed and you didn’t get a second chance post-election day.

The Georgia Democrat Party trained activists Wednesday night on how to go door-to-door to fix ballots rejected on Election Day.

Called ballot “curing,” the party is able to identify individuals who had defective ballots due to incorrect marking, mismatched signatures, or some other flaw. They are then visiting those voters in person and encouraging them to fix their ballots to count for the Democrats.

    • Rebel Scum

      That’s because it is suspicious.

Yeah the quiet from down-ticket is sickening for a Party (Dem/Repub).

      • Rebel Scum

Has there been any talk about these batches of unanimous Biden ballots and the other ballot measures that would be on said ballots or are they only marked for president?

      • Hyperion

You don’t have to mark ballots on all choices. For instance, wife and I marked all our choices for Trump and for the local repug candidate for the House because he looks very solid on 2A and other important issues, and we voted NO to every spending ballot. But there were issues we did not have time to research and we left those out for obvious reasons.

So, yeah, you can fill out an incomplete ballot and I assume most low info voters do not have a clue who any of those people are or even what a ballot issue is. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised when people only fill out the Biden vs Trump part and leave the rest blank. We’re going to have to do a lot better than that to prove fraud.

      • Rebel Scum

Of course you do not HAVE to mark all choices. A couple instances I have left things blank. But if there were a significant number of ballots only marked for president I’d find that a bit odd, especially if the other ballot measures are down ticket races and not things like state constitutional amendments or referendums.

    • Hyperion

There is trouble on the horizon.

I have no idea if the dems cheated or not. We rushed right into this massive mail in ballot experiment with no idea how it would turn out. Because we have to be saved from the lamest fucking pandemic of all time.

      • Ownbestenemy

Executives utilized special sessions (except Cali, Newsome just said it so) under the guise of the pandemic to change election laws, most about 3-4 months before the election and the people didn’t blink a damn eye to it.

      • Sean

We know they cheat. We knew mail in ballots (COVID!!) were pushed explicitly to enable more cheating. Court cases were brought to extend cheating windows.

There’s not a doubt in my mind we are watching fraud on a massive scale. Not even a sliver of doubt. Zero.

And the MSM is gonna continue to gaslight America, all while fanning the flames of violence. Yay.

      • Rebel Scum

Chick-fil-a could’ve efficiently managed the entire election in every state.

  29. Semi-Spartan Dad

So Trump gives a rational speech outlining all of the fraud going on with clear details and locations. As I listened, I thought surely the press will at least give the very slightest token acknowledgement that fraud isn’t okay and these actions should be given at least a cursory and quickly covered up investigation.

Nope. As soon as he stops, the first question out of the press is a man screaming “Mr. President, are you a sore loser?!” Then another reporter yells at Kayleigh about not being a real press secretary.

    • Ownbestenemy

This is exactly why I am torn on if he should shut up or not. The fact that he can come out and say the sky is blue today and the press will go on about anything other than what he said should have all people concerned about the major media companies and journalists.

      • Semi-Spartan Dad

I’m on the side that people need to know what’s going on. Even with the MSM, twitter, and facebook doing their damn best to censor it the second it drops, the news about the massive fraud is spreading and reaching.

This needs to be taken to the streets in addition to the courts. And we’re seeing that start to happen in Arizona and Nevada.

      • Count Potato

People should be against voter fraud no matter who wins.

      • Sean

        And Philly and Harrisburg.

      • Viking1865

He shouldn’t shut up. He should keep talking, calmly and rationally.

I’d say the fraud is in one big bucket: the mail in ballots that were “returned” by people who did not vote in 2016.

That’s the issue I have with all this. You cannot tell me that there are 500,000 living human beings in Michigan who didn’t vote for Clinton but did vote for Biden. There’s also supposedly 250,000 of them in Wisconsin. Those are the two states that sent mail in ballots out to everyone. So supposedly there are 750,000 actual Biden votes between those two states that have an actual real life human being attached to them.

Baseline standard Philly/Detroit/Milwaukee/Atlanta fraud, leave that aside for the moment. Just go through those mail in ballots, and run a standard audit on them. Pull them at random, go knock on the door. See how many people say “Yes, thats my signature heres my ID” and how many are former roomates or tenants, or are dead people, or are proggie granddaughter filling out evil racist grandpas ballot for him.

    • The Hyperbole

      clear details and locations

      links?

      • Semi-Spartan Dad

The press conference you mentioned above. It streamed live on YouTube. Trump talked about the cardboard being taped over windows in locations in Nevada (maybe?). In Philadelphia they locked out observers and then made them stand 80 feet away so the observers were using binoculars. He said how they finally won a court case to allow observers within six feet and the Dems are appealing that and asked for what possible reason could they appeal a transparent count other than to commit fraud. A lot more details laid out at each battleground location.

      • The Hyperbole

Fair enough, You never said Trump gave truthful details and locations, just that he gave them. I’ll modify my requests for links to include any other report of these things happening. I’ll even accept Breitbart if they have any collaborating evidence not just “I heard, they were taping windows”

    Benford’s Law

Its the theory that models first digit frequencies for a whole bunch of situations. Apparently, it can be used as kind of fraud detection device.
This stat’s professor applied it to milwaukee’s election results across the 478 wards and the results demonstrated, that while Trump’s results closely follow the correct distribution, Biden’s did not.

    Hmm…

I have no idea if it applies here or not – there are smarter people (like maybe you 🙂 ) that can shed more light on its effectiveness or not.
