You have to at least give me some credit for truing to find different things to talk about.  You’re probably skipping to beer and then proceeding directly to bitching about, I dunno, SCOTUS? Corporate Media?

I’m right aren’t I?

This is my review of Boulevard Rye on Rye

Something that caught everyone’s attention this week SpaceX test, that….blew up.  Nobody was on board.

The 165-foot-tall (50 meters) SN8 appeared to notch all of these big milestones, except for the final one: The vehicle hit its landing mark but came in too fast, exploding in a dramatic fireball 6 minutes and 42 seconds after liftoff.

SN8’s rapid unplanned disassembly did nothing to dampen the spirits of SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk, who was thrilled by the results of today’s flight.

“Fuel header tank pressure was low during landing burn, causing touchdown velocity to be high & RUD, but we got all the data we needed! Congrats SpaceX team hell yeah!!” Musk tweeted this evening.

“Mars, here we come!” he added in another tweet.

Musk was not expecting complete, wire-to-wire success today; he had previously given SN8 (short for “Serial No. 8”) just a 1-in-3 chance of landing in one piece

Emphasis mine.

Lets be real,  this is actually fantastic news if you compare the number of exploding rockets NASA built—with astronauts onboard.  Not to mention the Soviets, they probably had more but covered them up.

Musk was in the news even earlier this week when it was discovered the terms of service (ToS) for his Starlink satellite service included a small provision regarding the colonization of Mars:

For services provided on Mars, or in transit to Mars via Starship or other colonization spacecraft, the parties recognize Mars as a free planet and that no Earth-based government has authority or sovereignty over Martian activities. Accordingly, Disputes will be settled through self-governing principles, established in good faith at the time of the Martian settlement.

Let it be known, Musk spends an extraordinary amount of time trying to get me to not hate him.   Yes, I am that self-absorbed to believe he threw this in there specifically to entertain me.

What do you mean this won’t hold up in court…there is no court.

The issue the linked editorial presents is Mars being a celestial body, falls under International Law. Mars therefore falls under the jurisdiction of the international treaties the US is a signatory and SpaceX is launching from the US.  They therefore that line in the ToS is void.

I don’t think so.  I am reminded of the idiotic nostrum that possession is 9/10 of the law, but more importantly that the key to government edict is the idea of legitimacy.  Without it there is no sense in following anything they say we need to do.  What many forget (not around here, obviously) that legitimacy is contingent upon their ability to enforce their edicts.

How can enforce their edict in a place where it it will take 9 months to reach, with a 26 month “ideal launch window?”

The truth is it will not be easy once the colony reaches a point where it can sustain itself without input from Earth.  At that point those who rule will be there locally, determined in a way the locals agree.  We’ve seen this story before.  It presents an optimistic view of the future if those locals see it the same way, even if the present appears awful.

This is an absolutely ryetastic beer.  Boulevard is known for their heavy Belgian-style ales and this one spent some time in a rye barrel with a dash of maple syrup.  Ever have Crown Royal Maple?  I could say it is like that and be done with this article and declare “yet another week in the bag!”… but I’d be lying.  There is that type of flavor in this but thankfully, its mostly the Quad.  Its the Quad followed by a dash of Crown Royal Maple.  Thats not so bad, because Crown Royal Maple is everything that Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey wanted to be but failed miserably. Ever have Crown Royal Maple?

    Bleccch. Sounds disgusting.

    • R C Dean

A good mixer, IMO. the maple works well with other flavors.

      • EvilSheldon

Crown Royal has done some surprisingly good stuff lately. Their Northern Harvest Rye is great.

Tasty Beer, Mars? Who stays there first Wins, not who gets there….
    /Expanse….

    • LJW

Does is it count as staying if you die there?

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        Technically, Yes,
but who ever can break away from Earth bound needs, can tell Earth to Fuck Right Off,

      • Threedoor

        Yep.

      • limey

But then, Earth has all the nukes. Bah.

You’d think it would be pretty difficult to talk someone into leaving such an awesome planet for a… less desirable one. Yet, there appear to be millions of people who think it’s somehow going to be better.

    • trshmnstr the terrible

Narcissistic escapism. Losers who can’t find joy or adventure in their lives here think that they’ll end up transforming into some adventurous, joyful person out there.

      /indicting myself here, too

      • Suthenboy

I have been an adventurous, joyful person.

        Trust me, it is overrated.

    • Mojeaux

Lots of people have an itchy foot. It’s not that they want to go somewhere thinking it’s somehow going to be better. It’s that they want to know what’s out there.

Maybe there is a minority percentage of people who think they can build Utopia, but to me, it’s no different than the Vikings setting sail or the pioneers going west.

Add in the fact that now, unlike in the past, there is nowhere for freedom-loving individuals to go and “hide” or at least live in peace. The world’s locked up in despotism of one sort or another.

    • Floridaman

Because while the land is one factor it isn’t the only one. By quality of the land California should be the most desirable state to live in. But it isn’t anymore, and we all know why.

      • Gadfly

But it isn’t anymore, and we all know why.

        Hell is other people.

    • Threedoor

Work and struggle are desirable for a lot of us. The promise of tomorrow even if we never see it is alluring.

    • limey

On the topic of space exploration, yes it is all very fascinating, but literally everywhere in space or on any known heavenly body would appear to be acutely inhospitable at best.

On a related note, every time I poke around Reopen PA – related facebook pages, I see the list of restaurants defying Wolf’s order growing.

    It warms my heart.

Well, except I like Tennessee Honey.

    • Suthenboy

“legitimacy is contingent upon their ability to enforce their edicts.”

Uh…I dont think that is it.

      • R C Dean

I agree. On phone at brewpub, so not gonna type an extended discussion.

      • Suthenboy

I would say their ability to enforce their edicts is dependent on their legitimacy, which they are trying very hard to destroy.

      • mexican sharpshooter

Serious question: do you drive the speed limit, and why?

      • Mojeaux

        No. And I don’t wear a seatbelt.

But not out of any perverse desire to stick it to the man. I just like to get where I’m going as fast as possible without getting caught and I don’t like seatbelts.

I don’t do anything illegal JUST to stick it to the man. I just want what I want and hope I don’t get caught.

      • Sean

I’m a fastidious seatbelt wearer and have been since my mid 20s. For my own safety.

      • Mojeaux

I will admit that I need to adjust my attitude because if I die or am disabled/dismembered in a car accident and I’m not wearing my seatbelt, the policy won’t pay out.

      • Sean

Nope. I spent money on a nice car to drive like how I want.

      • mexican sharpshooter

That reminds me of a story…

      • Suthenboy

I drive what I consider to be a safe speed because you can mostly get away with violating the laws of man, but the laws of physics are a bit different.

      • mexican sharpshooter

So you’re saying they gotta catch you first?

      • Suthenboy

Heh. As it turns out what I consider to be a safe speed mostly corresponds with the speed limit and often just below.
We have a lot of idiot deer in Louisiana….and a lot of idiot drivers.

I have seen many horrible accidents. It isn’t something that only happens in movies or to other people. It can happen to you and it is real. When people complain about my overly cautious driving I respond with…

“If you had to entrust your children with a driver who would you choose?
Good choice, now I am doing the driver’s job so sit there and do the passenger’s job.”

At least three times my wife has said “How did. you see that coming? Oh my God, if I was driving we would be dead right now.”

I do all of the driving.

      • mexican sharpshooter

Are you suggesting “fuck you I won’t do what you tell me…although they probably can’t make me and its not the worst idea in the world”?

I’m just trying to see where you draw your line.

      • Suthenboy

I am saying I make my own decisions. I have watched ‘experts’ fuck up everything they touch all of my life. I do what I decide and I pay the consequences if I am wrong…I am just wrong much less frequently than ‘experts’.

      • mexican sharpshooter

        Aye,

For the record I go 5-10 or with the flow of traffic nearly everywhere I go. Yes, in AZ we have deer, farm equipment, idiots on horses, and everyone here seems to have a auto-related death wish.

unless its a school zone…for the children.

      • Warty

All I know is that the Constitution either authorizes a government such as we have or has failed to prevent it, and therefore is totally fit to exist and shit.

      • Suthenboy

It is not the constitution that has failed to prevent it.

      • Warty

        Let’s vote harder.

      • Suthenboy

Or start a new industry…rope stretching?

“Every now and then you have to shoot a General to encourage the others.” – Voltaire

      • Gadfly

Laws are obeyed for two reasons: respect and fear. Therefor, legitimacy can flow from either as well. The more worthy of respect the law itself is, the less the governing authority will have to rely on fear to maintain their legitimacy, so the less they have to rely on their own ability to see their edicts enforced and maintain their legitimacy. Of course, if a law is widely respected, it’s unlikely to be an edict generated from a governing authority themselves and more likely to be a preexisting moral code, so the legitimacy really rests elsewhere as well and the governing authority really doesn’t have that much legitimacy in and of itself.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, that also means it is easier for the government to crack down, but I’m trying to be optimistic.

        Lol.

I love these people. I want this movement to spread like a BLM fire.

  7. KSuellington

Those are indeed some fine lines by Musk. I’m happy to see that not only Tesla, but HP and Oracle have just announced moves out of California for Texas. We need more of this to happen here.

Posted this in the last dead thread, but I just came across this little gem of Peak Stupid from the LSU Texas A&M game:

    https://imgur.com/gallery/xiHC8gf

    • trshmnstr the terrible

HPE’s CEO is adament that there aren’t going to be layoffs for those who won’t relocate to TX from their silicon valley HQ.

That company is 30-40% too big as it stands right now, so I’m skeptical to say the least.

I’m guessing Oracle is in the same place, but they’re not directly competing in my tech field, so I don’t know how much they’re oversized.

      • Gustave Lytton

All they would have to do is rectify pay down towards Austin or WFHbumfuck levels and let those unwilling to move to seek other employment. Doesn’t have to drop all the way, just enough to make Bay Area untenable.

      • KSuellington

That’s what my hope is. I have been predicting such a thing and think that this may start a cascade effect with more and more tech companies locating outside the Bay Area. This state needs a very good spanking from reality.

      • zwak

I think the state is about 2-4 years out from an R takeover.

And all the gerrymandering the left did in years past is going to make that really easy.

      • DEG

I think there is some sarcasm in that comment.

On a serious note, I would like to see this succeed. Full disclosure: The website is better than PornHub as I gave money to the recall effort but have given no money to PornHub.

      • zwak

        Actually, no sarc.

I grew up there, my parents and brother and son were all born there, as were my grandfathers and great grandmothers. We go way back in that state, and I have never seen more anger than right now.

Loss of power is the keystone for this. And when the big money makers of tech leave, the state is toast. It’ll still have Hollywood, but that is it at that point. The Dems have done everything to alienate all the other industries. But people still work in those industries. Crime is going through the roof and is not contained to Oakland and Compton anymore. And the more it spreads into the ‘burbs, the more open to a hostile takeover. Watching Trump peel off more minorities than ever before, no matter how hard BLM pushes the All Racism, All The Time line, that will not hold.

Remember, Texas was a Dem stronghold at one time.

      • DEG

        I see.

I hope you’re right, but I’m feeling a little cynical.

Also look for Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye

      • Nephilium

That’s been shifted to just being in mix packs I believe. Hop Rod Rye from Bear Republic is a good one, but I’m not sure if it’s still in production, as Bear Republic pretty much pulled out of Ohio a couple years back. Cain and Ebel from Two Brothers is another good one, as is He*Brew’s Uncle Lenny RIPA (Rye India Pale Ale).

    • robc

The best I have ever had was from a brewpub tgat is long since gone. However, once you haf it, your next beer tasted off, so you had to stick with rye

  11. CatchTheCarp

Ordered a pair of new bookshelf speakers which were delivered yesterday. When I took delivery I was optimistic, the box was in good shape, no visible dents, dings or crush marks. Open the first box and it contained 2 boxes, one for each speaker. Nothing protecting the inner boxes, no airbags, peanuts, foam, protective cardboard sleeves, they were just double boxed. While removing the first speaker from it’s box I detect a rattle. Looks like it took a steel toed boot right to the woofer, ruptured the speaker cone and knocked the driver right off it mounting point. Not a mark on the cabinet.

My guess would be either dropped in the warehouse or chucked from the back of a truck.

      • CatchTheCarp

Box was heavy (70lbs), probably chucked by UPS along the way. Vendor is sending a new one which has a 50/50 chance of arriving undamaged if packed in the same manner.

At least you got your package, I just delivered one to my neighbor that I received by stupidity, and mine is at someone elses place, maybe I’ll get it back….

At the hospital today for morning shift change. Handing out free tamales for staff!

My conclusion is that the night shift nurses are hotter. Probably because the new nurses get stuck with the night shift.

This concludes today’s update from the front lines.

    • Suthenboy

      Tamales….damn.
I was scratching my head earlier for what to cook for supper. I have already started the potato soup. You say that and I remember now that I have beef tamales in the freezer and some chipotle sauce for them.

      • Suthenboy

Very, very yummy. Top with sour cream, salsa, lettuce and tomato. Eat with fork and knife. Wife puts a touch of dressing.

My mom, aunts, and sisters made some a couple weekends ago. I now have no freezer space whatsoever. They didn’t plan for the next obvious step in determining what they plan to do with 144 tamales.

I have seen several stories about that very thing. There will be “local wage scale” adjustments for those who want to work remotely from outside the Bay Area / Silicon Valley. The Bozeman Greater Co-Prosperity Sphere is not the cheapest place in the world, but you could live extremely comfortably on San Fran money.

Just got back from supporting that local restaurant defying the shutdown edict on indoor dining.

First time there (not very keto friendly). They were pretty darn busy, but I don’t know their usual levels.

Waitress kind of annoyed me to start. I couldn’t get a martini (vodka or otherwise) because they identified as a brewery. Even though they stocked spirits. GF couldn’t get a Jim Beam and diet coke, cuz they only stock local spirits. I ended up with a gin & tonic and she had some local bourbon with diet coke.

They charge $2.50 to sub out fries for a side salad (on a $15 burger).

The burgers? OMFG. Dee-licous. Great quality beef and great topping combos.

I had the panther blood burger and she had the shenanigans burger.

    http://www.theproperbrewing.com

Kinda pricey, but would do again.

    • Nephilium

They didn’t stock vermouth? Or was there a legal issue for serving a martini?

Girlfriend and I went to one of the local butchers today and picked up about two porterhouse steaks, and four New York strip steaks. One of each is going to be prepped for dinner tonight, the others will be vacuum packed and put into the freezer. It was the most packed store I’ve seen in a long time, and they weren’t making people wait outside.

    • BakedPenguin

When I was visiting South Florida for a Thanksgiving / birthday visit with my brother and his family, they took me to Duffy’s. I ordered a medium hamburger, got a mediocre medium rare burger with near- garbage tier fries. I would’ve had to have been much more drunk than I was to find that acceptable. My bro seemed to like the place b/c they had a “points” system that included booze. Also, “2 for 1” booze.

The drinks were okay. Hot waitress.

      • BakedPenguin

Also, he was paying, so I didn’t bitch about it.

I like The Proper. It’s a good place and I’m happy they’re defying Wolf.

So…Go Army! I mean, Go Navy!

Oh, hell—have a great game and make some good memories with your fellows!

    • rhywun

I haven’t seen that many people in a stadium in months. Cuomo must be pitching a fit.

      • hayeksplosives

And they had OMB, I mean the Commander in Chief Trump, make the coin toss.

        I’m literally shaking.

      • rhywun

Huh, missed that. I was on a different game.

      • Gender Traitor

How was he received by his troops?

      • hayeksplosives

They didn’t make a big deal about it, no political comments of any kind. I just happened to look up as the people were walking to midfield for the toss. The head ref explained the rules, handed the coin to Trump, he tossed it, Navy won the toss, and that was it.

There was a helmeted player from each team for the toss itself, the head referee, Trump, another referee, and several other folks gathered at midfield.

Only the two players, the refs, and Trump wore no Covid mask. Trump looked striking in his long black coat, standing tall and mouth an expression of dignified satisfaction.

Frankly, his tall maskless presence saved the moment; can you imagine Joe out there with his mask on, standing where they tell him to stand, meekly being led around.

I imagine he’s heard some good words today from the teams. I hope his last few weeks in office are semi-enjoyable, even though “the system” is clearly against him.

      • Gdragon

        The Whos, they keep playing!

They play without facemasks! They play in large masses!
They play without vaccines, without forward passes!

I got bored and decided to clean out my Service bag, these are my Basic hand tools for HVAC/R Service, 40 lb. of Money!

    • Threedoor

That’s not that bad for the basics. I like all the Klein stuff I’ve got. I e moved onto Mac screwdrivers, the 80s and 90s Carftsmen one’s were fantastic, the ones from the last twenty years stink. I go tired of breaking the philips with every use.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

For Electrical it’s Klein all the way, as you can see, the Craftsmen stuff is old, therefore still quality, and of course Crsent brand Wrenches and Slip joint pliers,
and 200 lb of other things we don’t bring into the house at first, it amazes me how much one can accumulate…

      • Gustave Lytton

I liked their strippers before they made the handles fat with “comfort” grips. Dipped plastic is good enough. Smaller is easier to slip in a pants pocket as needed. Or a smaller pouch.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        Old Klein tools FTW!

      • rhywun

I liked their strippers before they made the handles fat with “comfort” grips

        ??

      • DEG

        I saw that too.

      • Tres Cool

I’m Tres Cool, and I approve that message.

      • Threedoor

Has the entire line gone big? I’ve got both in my pile. The smaller handles work better with gloves.

    • Sensei

As I’ve gotten older and slightly richer, life is too short for cheap tools.

I tend to do lots of electrical work still and most of my stuff is Klein.

They make some stuff that I didn’t like, but they are honest and generally give you good value.

      • zwak

Klein and Proto for the win.

Oh, and Fluke. Cannot forget my Fluke.

    • rhywun

OFFS LOL lot of newfangled ones there I haven’t seen before.

    • Suthenboy

Preferred pronoun? I dont see “Your majesty” on the list.
I have no idea what any of that means. I do know that if you have to join a club you are probably not leadership material.

    • Gadfly

I like the “yo, yo, yos, yos, yoself” pronouns best.

Although, since there is a customized option I would be tempted to go with “shahanshah”. It fits in with those nonsense sounding words, so I’d think there would be a high likelihood of people missing what it means, plus it has triple the normal pronoun syllables, which is what I feel I deserve.

      • DEG

it has triple the normal pronoun syllables

That is an unequal distribution of pronoun syllables. Prepare to have your extra pronoun syllables redistributed.

My mother is looking for a new table computer.

    Any recommendations?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

A real computer, not some Android POC or even worse, an Apple Product!
      /typing on a real PC

    • hayeksplosives

My mom asked me and my sister what kind of PC to get. I told her if she wants my help, it has to be a Windows PC and I put together a spec for her.

My sister, the teacher and artist, told her to get a Mac.

So mom got the Mac. Mom calls me for help and I remind her she’s on her own because I don’t know Mac OS.

She got all huffy because she thought I’d been exaggerating when I told her I could not help her with a Mac.

I say you get Mom an Asus PC with a lighter keyboard and set up an option so you can take remote access to help with issues over the phone.

      • kinnath

She has a Win PC. She is looking for a replacement for a Samsung tablet that is dying.

/ no one uses, no support, limited programs, other than that…….

    • Nephilium

What’s going to be the use? Social media, sharing videos/pictures, and e-mail? You may be able to get away with a chromebook or something along those lines if price is a concern. Otherwise, you can put together a fairly inexpensive micro-PC with an integrated video card. In general, I prefer the build your own, as it allows for more customization, and comes with a longer overall warrant (most of the components have 3-5 year warranties on them).

    • rhywun

LOL I’m not wading into this flame war.

  22. prolefeed

Legitimacy in government has three legs:

The people in charge have the right to do what they do.

Those people have the power to enforce their laws.

The people ruled accept and acknowledge both of the above.

Thus, legitimacy in government is an individual belief, and any given government has some ratio of those who believe it is legitimate, and those who don’t. As that ratio gets lower, more and more coercion is needed to get compliance by the ruled.

Right now, I’d say a conservative estimate is that around 50 million people in the U.S. believe some or all of the government levels they are subjected to are illegitimate.

    I am one of them.

    2

    • Ownbestenemy

Which starts first, completely ignoring local/state/federal edicts or firebombings and blood?

      • prolefeed

Selective ignoring of the more retarded or evil edicts seems preferable, considering how well armed all the levels of governments are. Apparently voting them out is no longer an option, since they’ll just cheat harder.

At some level of tyranny, the other options are liable to erupt.

      • hayeksplosives

Completely and publicly ignoring them, flouting the illegal orders.

Cops will have to choose sides. County sheriffs are the closest counterbalance to them. Neither really wants to mow down civilians.

Since that bullshit amendment mandating direct election of US senators, there is nothing that represents a state in the US Federal government. That was a major mistake. If there is a National mask mandate, the states can’t rebuke the federal government through a neat political process.

There will be showdowns. How much blood will be spilled is an open question.

      • commodious spittoon

Neither really wants to mow down civilians.

I hope one day to share your boundless optimism.

  23. Hyperion

Amazon delivery is absolute garbage. I’ve had it with them to the extent I will probably now cancel Prime. It’s not worth it anymore unless you want at least 30% of your orders delivered to who the the fuck knows where except where it was supposed to be delivered to.

My wife just spent 5 minutes trying to calm me down. I absolutely want these people to die in a fire. I bet I’ve spent at least 5-6 thousand dollars with these jackasses in the past 6 months, probably over 10K in the past year.

I am soooo fucking pissed at these assholes. Bezos needs to go fuck himself up the arse with a rusty chainsaw.

I live in a Mobile park, someone got my lights today, are they cool enough to give them to me? I received a wrong addressed packaged today and got it to my neighbors house, hopefully someone doesn’t need my lights, but since they are nice, I’m sure I’ve been ripped off, Fuck them All!

      • Hyperion

I thought that was a single family you had up there? I didn’t even know that had mobile home parks up there.

When I lived up there, I was 10 and I was there about a year and a half. That was never Travis City. I think that is just North or South of where you are now? I’ve been up there a lot since, and I still have a friend new Travis City.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

    Blueberry pie

    Butterscotch Haystacks
    Golden brownies
    Fudge Brownies
    and Fudge,
    Maybe a Spice cake,
    yummy…..

  25. Suthenboy

On the taco recipe I posted above: I have made them twice. I went heavier on the cinnamon the first time and heavier on the clove the second time. The dish is great both times but very different.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Cinnamon in taco Seasoning? naah, I’ll stick with real Mexican food thanks,
      /Old school Cali food FTW!

      • Suthenboy

Here ‘real Mexican’ means TexMex. Heavy on cumin and chili powder…which is very good, but not ‘real Mexican’.
Check out the video I posted. Trust me, it is delicious.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leeiMxCbvBQ

Also, I used pepper jack cheese.
