‘Twas the Saturday night before Christmas…links

by | Dec 19, 2020 | Daily Links | 344 comments

Hmm, Christmas seems alive and well in Bethlehem.

Whether you celebrate the holiday or not, at least there should be some respite next week. All my shopping is done. SIL is coming to plague my life for five days, and then it’s time to close this sucker of a year out.

Five cases is a top headline on Drudge.

I would go all New Yorker and just piss on the sidewalk.

This should make for entertaining committee meetings.

Yep, they finally broke him.

Because there are just so many to choose from.

Try to avoid the derp next week and have a good time with friends and family!

Merry Christmas! I nominate egould for Snoopy.

Probably the best thing Adam Sandler has done.

So the musical group is the Vince Guaraldi Trio, and if you don’t have the whole Christmas album, you must get it. It’s fabulous.

      • But Enough About My "Essential Retiree" Status

The soundtrack first came out on CD in the early 90s, IIRC (and I frequently don’t): I bought it the moment I saw it in the music store.

        Remember music stores? {wave of sadness for realizing yet again that I’m gettin’ old}

        *sad sigh* I remember.

I have it playing right now as an honest-to-goodness CD playing through the AV receiver and the built-in house Bose speakers.

Kid in the green shirt in the back is moonwalking. Fifteen years or so before MJ.

Fight me if you think I’m wrong.

      • The Hyperbole

I think that’s either the Lawn Mower or The Shopping Cart. The entire crew could be Exhibit One in the case against white people dancing. The girl in the green looks like she’s taking off a straight jacket, the twins in the purple are doing some variation of “smelly hippie chick at a blues concert after the Dead quit touring”, Linus and Lucy are the worst of the bunch. The dude doing the Shrug-dance as Rhywun called it is at least trying to do the Camel Walk but he’s stuck on the first two moves. Notice that Franklin ain’t having any part of this debacle.

      • C. Anacreon

The kid in the green shirt is Shermy, who was one of the original Peanuts characters, in fact the one who uttered the punch line in the very first strip: “Good old Charlie Brown…..how I hate him.” He disappeared as other characters took center stage as the strip progressed.

The ‘shrug’ kid is named 555 95472, or 5 for short. He didn’t last in the strip very long, as his name was basically his whole shtick. His father, long before Elon Musk, got frustrated with the modern world and decided to give in, thus change the family’s names to numbers. 5 was the third kid, so the fifth member of the family. Their last name was the zip code from where they supposedly lived before they moved to Charlie Brown’s neighborhood.

Bonus: I think 95472 was Charles Schulz’ home zip code in Sonoma County, CA.

      • rhywun

        That’s… admirably bizarre.

Another asked if it might have been deliberately engineered.

What will happen when the U.S. Administration becomes less pro-Russian?

The State Department has informed Congress that it plans to shutter its last two consulates in Russia over caps set by Moscow on the number of diplomats that are allowed in the country.

In a letter to congressional leaders sent Dec. 10 and obtained by The Hill, the administration said it will permanently close its Vladivostok consulate and temporarily halt work at the consulate in Yekaterinburg.

The move means the U.S. embassy in Moscow will be the only diplomatic installation in Russia. It also leaves the U.S. without a diplomatic presence throughout a massive swath of Russian territory, which will hinder both efforts by Americans to travel to Russia and Russians to obtain visas to the U.S.

    Britons something something slaves…

From Sunday 20 December, some areas in England will enter Tier 4: Stay At Home.

And they won’t even defend their territorial waters.

Britain’s Conservative Party-led government has already agreed to pay the EU a multi-billion “divorce” settlement — despite having paid far more into the EU budget than t had taken out over the decades — and submit the British province of Northern Ireland to EU regulations in an attempt to secure a Brexit deal, but the bloc is still refusing to agree one, with its demands for continued control over Britain’s national fisheries a key sticking point.

Now a report by the Blue Marine Foundation revealing that over 95 per cent of the 100,000 tonnes taken from Dogger Bank in 2017 and 2018 went to the EU in an “unlawful asset-stripping operation” has added a further wrinkle to the dispute. with the NGO arguing catches which damage the marine environment, vital for the survival of porpoises, seals, and other marine life, are illegal under the Offshore Habitats Regulations.

“What should make it even easier for ministers to enforce the law is the disclosure today that almost none of this unlawful fishing activity is actually benefiting the UK Treasury and in fact it is damaging a marine asset that absorbs lots of carbon, thereby costing the UK money reducing its emissions elsewhere in the economy,” said Blue Marine Foundation executive director Charles Clover.

As someone looking at properties to buy for the past 6 months, every day, I can tell you something.

People are fleeing cities at an alarming rate and properties outside of cities that are still commutable are disappearing.

There’s really not anywhere I can commute to the offices of my current clients that is affordable except for one place, mostly because of high tax rates. Last week I was looking at a couple of places there. There were about 45 homes for sale there last week. Every single one of them are either contingent or pending. I kid you not.

I have to get out of here to another state, even if it means losing my clients and starting over again. I’ve just accepted that. I have enough money to survive for a couple of years, so I just have to hope for the best.

    • Urthona

So, I’ll just tell you what I’m talking about. There’s nowhere in this state where properties are worth even 50% of the asking price. PA is commutable, but the taxes are astronomical.

The place I was looking is Jefferson County, WV. Everything there is sold, and I mean everything that is in my budget. And that was not true last week. People are running for their very lives.

      • rhywun

People are running for their very lives.

So why are you? I mean, I get why you don’t like where you are, but this whole “running for your life” thing is pretty much bullshit, isn’t it?

“So why are you? I mean, I get why you don’t like where you are, but this whole “running for your life” thing is pretty much bullshit, isn’t it?”

Talking to some old friends back in Chicago, and the reality appears to be that a lot of folks in blue states and the big blue cities are mostly worried about the capriciousness of the decisions that have been made this year.

A friend who owns a bar in Chicago is now having marital problems over the financial ruin that Lightfoot and Pritzker have inflicted upon his business. The idea that this can be fixed with checks and bailouts is a sterling example of the mediocre thinking behind popular progressive policy ideas: you cannot fix this level of uncertainty in the business landscape. It’s a value and investment killer.

    • trshmnstr the terrible

It’s hot as hell most everywhere. We sold in the DC area and got asking within a couple weeks. We had a hard time finding a rental in Dallas, as they were disappearing day of. My dad sold his place in Indianapolis in a day, full asking in cash. He bought a place in Knoxville full asking in cash the day his new place listed.

Rock bottom interest rates and really low lending standards are inflating this bubble. I’m not convinced it’s anything besides a bubble. In fact, I think it’ll make the ’08 bubble look small.

I’m seriously thinking about flying down there this weekend and making an offer. Hope SpaceX or someone else down there will hire me after my client decides I can’t work remotely even though I haven’t been to the office in over 7 months.

      • mikey

In the West it’s common for the sketchy and the really nice to be side by side. Particularly in parts of town that were built up one house at a time. A product of no zoning. Two houses down from our very nice place is a rough single wide. Nice lady that brings us a big bag of potatoes at harvest time. As The area picks up the sketchy places get sold as tear downs.

      Been there, done that.

Don’t worry, they expect so little of us that it doesn’t matter in the long run.

Fried polenta, eggs and coffee is an amazing breakfast when it’s snowy outside. Especially if you made the polenta with some chopped andouille and cayenne.

Im weighing my numerous options, since I have a fridge full of leftovers. However, Spam™ and runny fried AIGS are in the running. With some toasted fake bread.

The good thing about my Sunday shoot being cancelled is it gives me time to cook breakfast.

      Fried polenta

I need to try making that. Lacking a rather crucial ingredient yet.

      • Not Adahn

Don’t tell anyone, I use plain ol’ cornmeal. 1 part to 3 parts water, boil for a few minutes, then let it cool down and chill it in whatever shaped container you want it to congeal in.

      • rhywun

Yes, that is what the recipe I’m looking at calls for.

      • Not Adahn

Because there’s so much water in it, it takes a long time to fry the edges to crispyness, so you’ll probably want to use lower heat than on most things. But it gives you plenty of time to make coffee and get everything else ready while it’s cooking.
