Monday “Oh Gawd, maybe I have the ‘vid – Round II”

by | Jan 11, 2021 | Daily Links | 374 comments

Ancient ‘vid.

Coughing again…This time with low grade fever! I hate to be #$@&ing paranoid about this, but I have to care for a Mom in her 80s and a Dad in his 90s. So, these will be sparse, while I go look for a rapid testing location.

  • I didn’t realize Grannykiller Cuomo was part of a mendicant order? Enjoy bailing out my state too, suckers!
  • Shockingly small, and no SMITHS. Disregard.
  • Enforcing this judgment may be … difficult. Maybe straffin can point out some hidden assets. Not that I would know anything about such…
  • Jupiter missed with a thunderbolt. Again.

*cough, cough*

“A new administration is going to be walking into a lot of deep problems, COVID-19 being one of them, an economy that is on the verge of collapse, a loss of standing in the world, environmental hazards – I mean the list is really, really long,” Lightfoot said at a news conference on Thursday.

“The thing that gives me hope is … that they will govern with empathy,” she said. “That means a lot particularly given what we’ve been through the last four years.”

Empaty = lots and lots of other peoples’ money.

    • Swiss Servator

I thank the taxpayers of the rest of the states for funding the corruption, lavish union pensions and politicians ability to steer contracts to friends, etc., of Illinois!

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

“Empathy” = Let’s punish those Trump fuckers! Make it impossible for them to do anything!

      • The Gunslinger

But do it in a way that brings unity and healing.

    • Not Adahn

My tax bill is a prime example of why NYS is in such deep shit.

City/county pensions cost more than all city/county srvices combined.

Medicaid is more expensive than that.

School taxes are four times all of the above combined.

      • Swiss Servator

I have 13 lines on mine – 6 are other people’s retirement funds.

      • I'm Here To Help

11 on mine, none are obviously other people’s retirement funds:

        1. County general revenue
        2. Schools – state
        3. Schools – local
        4. Municipal MTSU (basically services such as roads, mosquito spraying, fire/sheriff, etc)
        5. Water management district
        6. Port authority
        7. Children’s Board
        8. Transit
        9. Environmental voter approved debt repayment
        10. unincorporated parks voter approved debt repayment
        11. County libraries

      • Jerms

Im on a tax free NYC pension. Craziest thing about it is that if i had my wish i would have worked until i was 60. I had to retire and start getting my pension at 45. They said i couldnt do my job after my second surgery—yet i go the the gym every day and can still lift more than 95% of the guys/gals still working. What a country.

      • rhywun

I could just cut out the middle-man and hand my wallet over to you.

      • Jerms

Sorry Rywun, i didnt plan it this way.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

    • Master JaimeRoberto (royal we/us)

When I was a kid my dad banned the use of he word “hope” in our house, because hope isn’t enough. You have to do.

I’m beginning to feel the same way about “empathy”. Having empathy is fine, but it’s also cheap and often nothing more than theater.

      • Master JaimeRoberto (royal we/us)

I guess I should clarify. Empathy is cheap for the one exhibiting it. It’s expense for a lot of other people.

      • EvilSheldon

Progressives are all about empathy, until you ask them to actually show it for someone else. Then you get a very confused look.

    • Rat on a train

Empathy = other people’s money + ends justify means

    • Agent Cooper

      Fuck you, Beetlejuice.

    • kinnath

Many, many people use empathy when they really mean sympathy.

I think this site provides a nice clean explanation: https://www.diffen.com/difference/Empathy_vs_Sympathy

Empathy is the ability to experience the feelings of another person. It goes beyond sympathy, which is caring and understanding for the suffering of others. Both words are used similarly and often interchangeably (incorrectly so) but differ subtly in their emotional meaning.

Empathy — Understanding what others are feeling because you have experienced it yourself or can put yourself in their shoes.

Sympathy — Acknowledging another person’s emotional hardships and providing comfort and assurance.

Sympathy without empathy is a dangerous combination. I would argue that all of progressive theory is based on sympathy without empathy.

They will force their solutions on people they sympathize with (for their own good) without having any concept of why those people reject the progressive solutions.

      • Mojeaux

Sympathy without empathy is a dangerous combination.

I disagree. In the normal course of events, MOST people can only sympathize with another who is going through something. My cousin’s wife is dying from the ‘vid (probably). Since I have not lost a spouse, I can’t possibly empathize, but I can have sympathy and express my hope that she wakes up, and tell him I am praying for/thinking about him and his wife.

I cannot empathize with a closeted gay person, but I can be sad about his/her situation.

I cannot empathize with someone who is so poor their cupboards are bare, because no matter how little money I’ve ever had, I’ve always had food to eat. But I can be sad about their situation and help put food on their table.

The problem is when people use the word empathy as a cudgel, which is what is happening on the left.

      • R C Dean

I cannot empathize with someone who is so poor their cupboards are bare, because no matter how little money I’ve ever had, I’ve always had food to eat.

I can. At one point, I was selling plasma (to two separate centers, which is a no-no) to get money to buy ramen.

      • Mojeaux

Right. You’ve been there, so you can empathize.

I have not been there, so I can only sympathize.

      • EvilSheldon

You’ve either been there, or you have a highly trained emotional intelligence that allows you to accurately assess what other people are feeling based on preconscious cues. Most people can’t do that with anyone other than family and/or intimate partners. Really good salesmen and spies tend to have high levels of general empathy. The FBI Behavioral Sciences Unit operates based on having substantial empathy for serial killers. It’s rarely warm and fuzzy.

      • Mojeaux

I did not know that. Very interesting.

A homesteading group in which my wife participates got hit with the FB “moderation” hammer because they discussed “preparing.” The preparing is for gardening and canning and the shackles should, I assume, pass, but the whole group had enough. They migrated to MeWe.

Everyone knows preppers are crazy, right-wing, terrorist nutjobs.

” crazy, right-wing, terrorist nutjobs.” Yes, but not a prepper….

“Whiteness fuels and dominates policy and practice in food systems. Whiteness permeates the food system in the ways it “articulate(s) white ideals of health and nutrition, offer(s) whitened dreams of farming and gardening that erase the past and present of race in agriculture, mobilize(s) funding to direct programming toward non-white beneficiaries, and create(s) inviting spaces for white people.””

      • PBRstreetgang

        Capt. Queeg?

      • Fourscore

When Whitey stops farming/gardening S will really HTF. The economy is going to be where the action isn’t, with the businesses closed, Biden’s grandiose money schemes and limited production and distribution all those believing that they are the winners are going to be surprised. Nothing left to win.

Modern Monetary Policies are so old-fashioned. I wonder if a free market would improve things, didn’t some Massachusetts? governor try that 300 years ago?

      • Toxteth O'Grady

I notice Walmart carries a lot of southern food. Even a bit of Caribbean.

      • Chafed

That is some grade A SJW derp. This passage stood out to me, “Consequently, many historically white-led organizations find that their policies and programs fail to resonate with Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) communities.” Remind me again how well Michelle Obama’s school lunch program went.

      • Tonio

I think he means home-canned, like with mason jars. What the Brits would call “jugged.” We call it “putting up” down here.

      • Fourscore

This past year canning supplies ground to a halt. We had to beg, scrounge and borrow to insure enough we had jars for honey production. We’re not talking big quantities, about 7-8 dozen. Now I have a standard entry on my shopping list when I go to Walmart/Big Box stores, check for jars.

    • Drake

      Interesting business model they have.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

Is it too early to sound the bugle-oo?

It was the only way to save them.

    • robc

      Two possibilities.

      1. They assumed the vaccine was more effective than it really is and engaged in unsafe behavior that brought the virus in.

      2. Well, I won’t even say it, it even sounds too conspiratorial to me. But we shall see.

      • grrizzly

The Covid outbreak in the nursing home started at the same time as vaccination. So many people were infected before they got the vaccine. Also, the vaccine isn’t supposed to work instantaneously.

      • Gustave Lytton

Says the vaccination was a week before the outbreak, so another possibility is one of the vaccinators and/or support staff coming in to do it were infected.

      • R C Dean

The timing lines up. I think this would qualify as “irony”, no?

      • one true athena

“The Rocky Mount Police Department is aware that two off-duty officers were present at an event in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, January 6, 2021. The Town of Rocky Mount fully supports all lawful expressions of freedom of speech and assembly by its employees but does not condone the unlawful acts that occurred that day,” the released statement said. “Based on the available information, the Police Department has notified federal authorities and the individuals that were present at the event are on administrative leave pending a review.”

“We expect basic fairness from Washington finally. With our new president, a new Senate and the House members, I believe they will do justice.”

Cuomo shut down the state, causing the suffering. Trump gave him everything Cuomo wanted, so I don’t see the lack of basic fairness. Yes, I have a handicap: a working brain.

“Biden’s inauguration, set for next week, Jan. 20, comes at ‘a time of unprecedented crisis,’ according to the Biden team, and its inaugural theme ‘reflects the beginning’ of a ‘path to a brighter future,’” the outlet continued, referencing the official announcement.

“Our political divisions are seeking to tear us apart and continue to test the strength of our democracy,” the announcement read. “The moment calls for sober reflection and the mustering of our national resolve. It is also a moment of hope.”

I got a call from her last week; she and I have known each other from years and we occasionally talk on the phone so I figured this was one of those “general” calls. It wasn’t.

We talked for quite some time and it was rather disturbing; here’s a lady that has been, by Gov Sununu, to transfer from Rep-Elect to Representative. To be lawfully seated with her peers to the NH Hall of Representative seat to which her constituents have elected her. It was a lot of information she through at me as she has tried hard to get what would amount to just a couple of minutes of Governor Sununu’s time to have her swear her oath in front of him. How petty is that?

    • Swiss Servator

      How is that…allowed?

      • Not Adahn

She’s refusing to be sworn in over zoom.

      • DEG

Article 85 of the NH Constitution requires, as I read it, oaths of office being administered by the governor in the presence of a justice of the state Supreme Court in the presence of both houses of the legislature. Note the governor’s oath is given by a justice of the state Supreme Court.

The State Supreme Court decided that the governor and the Executive Council didn’t have to take their oaths this year in the presence of the legislature as as mandated in the state constitution because a) it’s not an official act, and b) LIL RONA. Only the governor, the Executive Council, one state Supreme Court justice, the Senate president, the Speaker of the House (I think), and a few other officials were present at the governor’s inauguration and swearing in of the Executive Council.

Sununu did comply with the state constitution when swearing in those members of the legislature that were present for Organization Day. Those legislators that weren’t present were sworn in over Zoom because of Lil Rona. The rest of the legislature was almost certainly not on that Zoom call.

      • Not Adahn

I’m not saying you’re wrong, or that the Clown Prince doesn’t deserve to be gibbeted, but whats-her-face makes it seem like her ego is involved:

Paul Smith, the House Clerk was contacted the next week to schedule the swearing in ceremony where I could take my oath of office. He suggested a Zoom call for the swearing in on that medium. I wholeheartedly disagreed – we have already suffered enough this term with many indignancies. We cannot have in-person guests or any witnesses to this incredibly special achievement. We are not serving in the Peoples House at the Capitol. I do not believe the House members should be treated this way, of this I feel strongly.

      • DEG

I think there is a bit of ego involved.

Doesn’t matter to me. He should do his job.

    ZIP TIES!!!!

Two men allegedly seen in viral photographs of the deadly assault on the U.S. Capitol have been arrested, the Washington, D.C., attorney general announced Sunday. Larry Rendell Brock and Eric Gavelek Munchel were both allegedly seen in pictures of the riot occupying the chambers of Congress while wearing tactical gear and holding plastic zip ties.

    ——-

Brock was arrested Sunday in Texas and charged with the same crimes as Munchel, the Justice Department said. The department alleged that Brock is the man seen in multiple photographs from the riots wearing a green helmet, tactical vest and black and camo jacket while also carrying plastic zip ties.

Brock was identified as a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel by John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto’s Munk School. Scott-Railton told CBS News that he used a combination of facial recognition software and a group of experts to help identify the patches on his clothing. Brock’s identity was first reported in The New Yorker.

After feeling confident in his identification, Scott-Railton told CBS News, “I decided it was time to contact the FBI and refer the info to them.”

“I didn’t immediately go public, but worked with [journalist] Ronan Farrow and his team of fact checkers at the New Yorker,” he said. “I believe American public needed to know but wanted to be certain.”

Ivanka Trump is planning to attend Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20 – much to her father’s chagrin – and is scrambling to save her aspiring political career as the White House plunges further into chaos and is being dubbed a ‘circus on steroids’ by insiders.

‘Ivanka is worried that her promising political career is in jeopardy and she’s doing whatever she can to save her reputation,’ a White House insider tells DailyMail.com.

But President Trump is up in arms about Ivanka’s decision.

‘He said it’s an insult that she would even want to engage with the crooks that are trying to bring him down,’ says the insider, adding that Trump said the family must stand together and put on a united front.

‘The president told his daughter that her presence at the inauguration will cost her thousands of supporters and would be the worst decision she could ever make,’ they say.

But Ivanka is convinced that by attending Biden’s inauguration she will come across as ‘being a good sport and will gain future supporters,’ the source says.

‘She said she has to protect her own political aspirations and isn’t about to muck it all up by attending her dad’s 2024 campaign kick-off which is set for the same day. She’s leaving that for her dad and Don Jr.'”

Uffda. Doesn’t look like this year’s legislative session will be filled with Minnesoda Nice. But good for the GOP for pushing back against King Walz and the DFL.

Walz had been on the teleconference for more than 20 minutes before he spoke. When he did, he unloaded. “I’m incredibly disappointed in this conversation,” Walz said, holding up a photo from D.C. of a noose strung on a gallows. The election, he said, was investigated and litigated and found to be free and fair.

“How do we find common ground when we have people who won’t say the election was fair?” Walz asked. “Just because you’re angry with the result of it isn’t an excuse for what’s happened.

“The United States Capitol was stormed by people who were intent on killing the Vice President, the Speaker of the House and our other legislative leaders at the urging of the President of the United States.”

And Walz said he took “umbrage” with statements that what happened in St. Paul was okay, because, he said, “the result of that, and that language of taking the governor and his family prisoner, and that ‘there may be casualties,’ resulted for the first time the State Patrol entering the living quarters and removing my 14-year-old son to a safe location.”

Maybe Tim Walz should think about relenquishing his “emergency rule” powers and letting the legislators do their jobs?

    • Pope Jimbo

Also, do you think I should hold my breath waiting for a fact checker to rate his statement about the mob wanting to kill the VP at the bidding of Trump?

      • Viking1865

It’s more of the “Are they this dumb or this dishonest?” to me.

Let’s postulate that there was in fact a mob, lets say 200 strong, of zealous Trumpaloos who were 100% committed to armed insurrection, with capture and public execution of the politicians in the Capitol. Let’s say the plan was to breach, truss up, and drag out senior politicians and kill them on the steps of Our Sacred Temple of Democracy.

None of them brought guns? It’s the middle of winter, I can imagine quite a lot of hardware being smuggled in under winter coats. Where was it? If I was conspiring to commit a coup, I’d bring in more than a flag or a Q KNOWS THE TRUTH poster.

Yeah if you can snatch the Speakers gavel and find enough fellow travelers to make a quorum you apparently wield the power of the US government.

Like, we need to be careful with foreign visitors to the oval office. The Pakistani ambassador could grab the red phone and yell NUKE ISRAEL NOW and StratCom just flips the switches and the ICBMS fly in seconds, no questions asked.

How about we investigate the election fraud claims? I’d like to know if it’s normal to kick all of the observers out and then run the stacks of ballot through the machine 3-4 times. There’s more th

      • EvilSheldon

How do we find common ground when we have people who won’t admit that there was at least the appearance of electoral impropriety?

We don’t. Common ground requires a common understanding of reality, and we’ve lost that. Either we get it back, or one side consumes the other. That, is it.

      • blackjack

Yes. When we can’t even agree what happened, right before our eyes, there’s no common ground anymore. Last week at work, my supervisor came into the morning meeting and said that the rioters, had they been black BLM folk, would have been shot on sight. I pointed out that BLM had burned multiple cities to the ground, killed, raped and stole all year and nobody lifted a finger. In fact the vice president actually shilled for raising bail money for them. The two crazy lefties ( the supe and one other ‘tard) just paused until I was finished speaking and went right back to bitching about all the racism. I knew then that I was leaving that place as soon as is practical.

intent on killing the Vice President, the Speaker of the House and our other legislative leaders at the urging of the President of the United States.”

Really? Bullshit! They were intent on walking through the building with little to no damage. Excepting of course the couple of odd birds wearing all black with hoodies trying to break windows ( who, BTW, were stopped by MAGA people) AND, the president did no such thing. He gave a speech which did not include any incitement whatsoever. The lies are just way too extreme. How does anyone not just look at the tape?

Well this certainly has been a time for reckoning – learning that my Democrat mom is insane about DJT and wants him IMPEACHEDEHDHHDDDDD!@!!!! I reined myself if from making some snarky comments.

And the posts I put up on FB – Glenn Greenwald, etc – about the dangerous path they are taking was met with stony silence from almost everyone I know.

But happy to see that a few folks from the old punk rock scene are calling this censorship out; so there is some hope for humanity. Old punkers either become Libertarians or rabid government apologists. A strange world.

The only positive thing that has happened in the last year is the number of “normies” that have quietly come around to our way of thinking. People who used to tell me I was nuts have told me that they realize I might have been onto something.

I suck at chess. I have been trying for nearly 51 years to not suck, to no avail. I started playing on chess.com against other live sucky players.

So far, in 18 games, 9 of each color, I am 4-5 as white and 7-1-1 as black.

I know enough about chess to know that isnt right. I know the issue. To put it in soccer terms, as white I pkay a positive game, pushing forward. As black, I park the bus and counter attack. Against other players of my level, it works.

      • But Enough About [this space intentionally left blank]

Why, it’s almost like it’s been designed to have symptoms that look almost random from one person to the next.

      • Urthona

To be fair, flus and colds are the same way. Remember reading an article published on the CDC web page years ago about this.

For whatever reason, a healthy percentage of people just don’t get serious serious symptoms from a particular strain and THIS IS NOT PREDICTIVE of what will happen with the next strain.

It’s just a weird wacky world.
