That the United States made it through President Joe Biden’s inauguration without any major act of violence is a relief. But the fact that we had to be seriously worried about it — to the point of deploying 25,000 National Guard troops to secure Washington, DC — illustrates that the threat of far-right violence is here to stay.
——-
Federal agents have been warning of a surge in far-right violence since at least 2009, but Trump’s malign influence supercharged the threat. The Trump years have seen a flurry of deadly right-wing violence: the murder of Heather Heyer in Charlottesville; 16 pipe bombs mailed to prominent Democrats and media figures; the mass shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue; and then the Capitol assault, a literal attack on the democratic process by an armed mob fueled by bigotry and conspiracy theories.
As Biden’s presidency begins, Americans are faced with the possibility that we are entering a new era of political violence — one that Trump and his party have stoked for years.
——-
Sustained campaigns of political violence don’t happen in a vacuum; they become plausible only when societies are rent by deep and serious cleavages. The GOP’s willingness to play with rhetorical fire — stoking racial resentment, delegitimizing the Democratic Party and the democratic process, and even indulging in naked appeals to violent fantasies — has created an environment that can encourage the outbreak of right-wing violence. This is already doing concrete damage to our democracy: Several Republican legislators have said they would have supported impeachment if doing so did not pose a threat to their families’ lives.
This specter of violence hanging over our politics may prove to be one of Trump’s most enduring legacies, and a steep challenge for a Biden administration already facing crises on multiple fronts.
We’re through the looking glass. Forget plastics, young graduates. Doomsday bodice rippers is the growth industry of the 21st century. Hate and fear will set you free.
Wave that crusty sock high.
“But the fact that we had to be seriously worried about it — to the point of deploying 25,000 National Guard troops to secure Washington, DC — illustrates that the threat of far-right violence is here to stay.l
See, that’s how you assume a conclusion.
“Put down that knife!!” said the crazy woman, loudly enough that she is overheard, and thus everyone looks judgmentally at her flabbergasted and entirely unarmed boyfriend.
If we are to be held responsible for someone else’s paranoid delusions, we’re in for more character assassination and even criminal proceedings.
Reflecting wuiclly on actual violence done to congresscritters in recent years, I come up with:
1) Gabby Giffords being shot by a lone wolf lefty nutter
2) Republican congressmen and senators being shot at (with one hit) during a softball practice, perpetrated by a Bernie Bro.
3) BKM mob attacking Senator Paul and his wife in the street.
My mind is blanking on righties physically harming congresscritters.
But we have to FEAR the bad Trump crowd! Why, Trump even inspired noted conservative celebrity Kathy Griffin to pose with a fake decapitated head of some politician or other for a photo shoot!
BKM
Black Knives Matter?
Burger King Mafia
4) Paul assaulted by his neighbor, sending him to the hospital.
I like that they blame the Republicans for stoking racial resentment.
Yeah… apparently none of them have ever been to Minneapolis or Chicago or Atlanta or New York or Dallas or Baltimore or Philadelphia or Boston or Detroit or…
But the fact that we had to be seriously worried about it
Who is “we” kemosabe?

If I only could turn that into solid form I’d be Norman Borlaug.
“That the far-right poses the most salient terrorist threat is no longer up for debate,” scholars Bruce Hoffman and Jacob Ware wrote in a November piece on Lawfare.
Thass a fack, Jack!

There. Are. Four. Lights.
Asshole.
Not up for debate is what the left says when they need the conclusion and are sick of trying to prove it so they try to browbeat you into going along with it.
“My political enemies are
Terrorists” is just blatantly debatable
Since criminal cases presume innocence until proven guilty, and the burden of proof is on the prosecution, I expect wearily civil actions against wrong thinkers instead.
And as usual, the process is the punishment.
-The moon is made out of green cheese.
-The world is flat.
-Joe Biden is not in the early to mid stages of dementia.
Those are facts by my decree, so mote it be (and if you disagree you need to be looked into so be careful what you say you possible traitor wannabe).
Lol@ the Kellogg story. Oddly enough, I did have that in my Rolodex of odd facts. Probably because when I read it years ago, I thought “The f@ck good did they think Corn Flakes were going to do with curbing libido? And why did they obsess about this “menace” anyway!”
Graham crackers have a similarly prudish origin, having been invented to prevent masturbation as well as 2-person hanky-panky.
And now graham crackers figure prominently in cheesecake crusts, and since It Is Known (TM) that cheesecakes are an aphrodisiac, I’d say that’s a fail.
Poor ol’ prudes missed their chance to put Americans on the path to self extinction.
There was an episode of Drunk History (before they went SJWoke) about the Kellogg bros, played by the Wilson bros.
Because he thought all bad things* were the result of (or at least exacerbated by) eating meat. So he was all about getting all of humanity on a vegetarian diet.
*sin of Onan donchakno.
I’m too lazy to look it up but I think Kellogg pushed circumcision for gentiles to curb masturbation. Who knows if that was before or after he tested the corn flakes
On the other hand, the internet also allows for individuals to self-radicalize by reading extremist content to a degree impossible in the pre-internet age. In addition, the Trump administration has systematically deprioritized right-wing radicalism (as compared to jihadism) for years — to the point where right-wing radicals have successfully infiltrated law enforcement agencies and the armed forces. The day before Biden’s inauguration, two members of the National Guard were removed from DC security duties after investigators discovered ties to right-wing extremism.
Okay, I have to stop. These people are like little children, with no recognition of context or ability to consider their “truth” from an alternate viewpoint.
The sooner they all disappear up their own assholes, the better.
*Is that violent eliminationist rhetoric? Probably.
“…right-wing radicals have successfully infiltrated law enforcement agencies and the armed forces. ”
DAFUQ??!?? So in this person’s mind previous to the Trump administration law enforcement and the military were bastions of liberal thought and wokeness… Please, somebody show me how that works.
Okay, I have to stop. These people are like little children, with no recognition of context or ability to consider their “truth” from an alternate viewpoint
DAFUQ??!?? So in this person’s mind previous to the Trump administration law enforcement and the military were bastions of liberal thought and wokeness…
I think the bigger picture is that no, they don’t truly believe this. Trying to parse it logically as a good faith discussion is going down the wrong path. They aren’t stupid… they are dangerous.
It’s simply propaganda to support the purge of wrong thinkers from law enforcement and the military. No different than the state-run media of any other banana republic. And the purge is real. A local news story gleefully proclaimed two police officers were fired in a rural bumfuck town next to me just for being among of the hundreds of thousands present in DC on the 6th (not even participating in the Capitol event).
Yes, don’t try to approach irrationality, either feigned or real, from a rational standpoint. It’ll drive you nuts. Some of the dumber ones might believe that stuff but the movers and shakers most certainly do not.
Didn’t Obama purge the military of s high number of top brass (and 2nd to top brass) so that he could let the top jobs be populated by correctly-thinking individuals?
I would say no to that. The top brass are essentially politicians first, soldiers second, but there is no reservoir of good-thinkers below them. The military system produces more of the same – building up officers until they reach the stage of requiring Congressional sponsorship (O-6 and above). That is the beginning of the transition from officer to politician (and it consumes them as they progress up the ranks).
The f@ck good did they think Corn Flakes were going to do with curbing libido?
Have you ever had corn flakes? Eating the box they came in would be a step up.
If you put in several well-rounded tablespoons of sugar they’re not that bad.
That takes me back to my elementary boarding school in Malaysia.
Monday…rice porridge (with prunes)
Tuesday – oatmeal – w/ raisins
Wed – muesli
Thurs – (oatmeal again I think?)
Fri – …granola? I can’t remember
Sat – Corn flakes – w/ sugar
Sun….muesli again I think.
Mon was “semolina”, Thurs was rice porridge…

It is much easier to read that menu schedule since it is cereal 😉
Weirdly…forgot to specify “breakfast” menu only, but assume it was pretty clear. It was a large dining hall type thing with each dorm at a different table. Menus were pretty routine week to week, but not as strict as the navy – other than certain meals.
Yeah I figured that wasn’t the daily rations 😉
I was actually wondering about pun etiquette since I am not a frequent punner. Which version do I use there to make the joke, “cereal” or “serial”?
Yup, had corn flakes regularly with two heaping spoonfuls of sugar.

Puppies!
My brother’s Great Pyr has a litter of seven yesterday. One’s being held for me. Now I’ve to to figure out if I can afford to fence in my yard. I’ll hit the farm supply store today and see what the cost will be for T posts and horsewire. l’ll put a section of real/respectable fencing splitting the front yard off from the back, but I’m not clearing a path through the woods to put in the more aesthetically pleasing dog containment barrier.
We’re nuts for that breed. Ours spent most of last night guarding us against Nephilium’s girlfriend.
Nice! I did t posts and field fencing with wood posts for the corners. Recommend field/woven fencing over horse. You can get away with 14 gauge since you don’t have livestock but spring for Class 3 galvanized so it won’t rust. That’ll run ~$150 for each 330 ft roll. Doesn’t really get more cost-effective than that.
I don’t know about Great Pyrenes, but our dogs are bad diggers. I ended up running a mesh chicken wire along the bottom of the fence to form an apron. Grass grows up through the mesh and seals the bottom of your field fencing to the ground. They also can’t dig through the apron.

of course cheap gin mostly tastes like Pinesol. It wasn’t until I had Hendricks, Liberty, barrel-finished, etc that I truly began to love the stuff. Only inexpensive ($19 a fifth) gin I like is Bombay Dry Gin (the stuff with the red cap, not the blue sapphire).
A good old gin and tonic made from the Pine Sol flavored stuff in the summertime is to die for.

Ha, that’s exactly the brand I had in mind, Seagram’s works too.

Cover story
As main protagonists go, Biden’s role has been comparatively limited — a startling contrast to the omnipresent president who preceded him. Donald Trump didn’t so much love the spotlight as he sought to totally consume it. Whether he was sending Twitter screeds at all hours or shouting answers over the ear-splitting blades of his presidential aircraft, Trump craved media attention like no American leader before him.
Biden’s current approach is nearly the antithesis. It also stands in contrast to how he operated earlier in his career. As a senator, he was known for his loquaciousness. As vice president, there was an ever-simmering fear in the White House that he would trample on the message of the day with his proclivity to freelance (a fear that often did not become realized).
——-
“He’s secure. He’s not threatened by someone else being in the spotlight,” Paul Begala, the veteran Democratic strategist, said of Biden. “In fact, I think he likes that. He’s showing the country that he’s pulled together a really talented and diverse team.”
During the presidential campaign, Biden turned his pledge to hire and rely on the advice of experts into a weapon against Trump. And his advisers went into the transition acutely aware of the history of presidents who shouldered too much of the load. Jimmy Carter, the first president elected after Richard Nixon left office, was a poor delegator and quickly came to be seen as unable to meet the demands of the office.
——-
During his own campaign, Biden perfected the act of laying low, to such an extent that Democrats joked he was part of an Avengers-like ensemble rather than a solo act.
Some, including people close to Biden, say while it’s not a driving factor, there is a generational component to his decision not to scramble for attention. At 78, he is the oldest president in history. His tech savviness is not regularly touted. He has pledged to be a bridge to a future generation of Democrats — who welcome whatever bit of the attention he can give them.
He’s not hiding, honest. He’s a very very wise man who doesn’t want to hog the limelight like that megalomaniac Trump. He is perfectly capable of speaking in public. He merely chooses not to.
Do Democrats ever get sick of the self-fellating?
Nah, they just stay in a perpetual state of drug induced black out, because if you can’t remember it, it never happened.
At least, that’s what a friend of mine told me.
The Being There Presidency.

I can’t even find potato starch anywhere.

Completely OT: I’m selling some of my coins on Ebay. The number of offers – to buy it now – I got was pretty surprising. Also a lot of: “These coins aren’t in the greatest condition, but let me buy them from you.” messages. I know it’s the way for small businesses to buy low, sell high but hey, at least show me some respect. These are 150-200 year old coins, of course they aren’t going to be mint uncirculated specimens, especially with my buying dollar when I’m more interested in the history than the object.
Then there’s Pete Buttigieg, known for his non-stop media hits during his presidential bid and as one of the Biden campaign’s most effective surrogates.
Buttigieg has made a dizzying number of appearances in his new role as Transportation secretary designate, stopping off at “The View,” “Morning Joe” (twice) and another MSNBC show, CNN (twice), NPR, Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight show, local TV stations in Green Bay and Detroit, an interview with the Washington Post, and a sit-down with “Captain America” star Chris Evans’ media company — all since mid-December.
Presidential nominees traditionally hold to a strict code of omertà before the Senate waves them through. But a Buttigieg adviser said the issues he’s talking about — Covid relief, Biden’s “Buy American” executive order, and climate change — are all “important transportation priorities that Pete is eager to get to work on at DOT, if confirmed.”
Buttigieg’s actual role in the administration has sometimes taken a back seat to whatever news is dominating the day. In a recent CNN interview with Don Lemon, he was asked about the Senate impeachment hearings involving Trump, Biden’s devotion to unity, and the president’s reversal of the transgender military ban — a topic to which he has a personal connection as an openly gay veteran.
Rather than duck, Buttigieg followed the lead set by others in Biden’s orbit and engaged, calling Biden’s order an example of what it really means to “support our troops.”
See what a good little boy I am, Daddy?

A year? You need to get in on some COVID Tinder action. All of those lonely people stuck in their rooms bored out of their minds. Just tell them you haven’t seen anyone for weeks or months. Then you can set up a different partner for each night of the week. How would they know?
Just show up in your mask acting all scared with some story about a rando attack by a MAGA hat wearer when you stopped for gas. Brag about your huge store of pre-COVID alcohol that you just picked up from Kroger on the way over.

Oh, I’m sure I could arrange that if I wanted to. But since I’ve reached middle age the effort hardly seems worth the bother. I’ve made it no secret here that I’m not exactly well in the best of times. The last year hasn’t been in the best of times. “Does anyone here with Tesla who lives in an apartment? Where is the most convenient part of Memphis to charge near mud island? I’m waiting for my car to be delivered. Now, I’m anxious if it is convenient to have a car like this here in Memphis, especially I can’t install my own charging station.”
I’m not gunning for Tesla; some of my friends are Tesla folk
But what kind of
personCalifornian buys a horse without owning the necessary pasture and then moves to a place that has no stables? Of course, I’m the dumbass because I can guaranfuckentee you that within minutes some out-o-towner is going to convince the flakes on our city council that I need to be taxed to set up a charging station for her car. What a dumb-ass I am: managing my own life well, planning ahead, avoiding risk, and paying for it out of my own pocket.
You’re probably subsidizing her tax bill in various ways, too. Isn’t graft wonderful?
Speaking of graft.
“We’re adding a billion people to the unemployment rolls every month.”
You’re supposed to beep your clown nose after you say stuff like that.
“ND Rep. Wayne Trottier wears a Crown Royal bag as his face covering at the capitol.”

He’s got my vote, hell let’s run this guy for president.
Good morning, WebD!
That Pompeii article is one of the best I’ve read in a long time. Thanks for sharing that one.
But the Merton link threw me – was there someone else you were thinking of. Merton certainly wrote some interesting stuff – if you’re into Catholic apologetics.
Second link. Eat like a Roman dude. Cool stuff.
Agreed
Wiki link doesn’t mention it, but she must have been referring to this.
A guy at work wears one, funny
Remind me again…is coinbase worth using for a general crypto bank or is there a preferred alternative?
Ooh, let’s give Congress veto power over federal elections conducted in the states.
“We do not approve your choice, people of [insert state]. Try again. If you wish, we will provide a list of acceptable candidates.”
Unity and healing, FTW!
Facebook update from high school buddy:
marked safe from (((space lazers)))
howz that?! I’m pretty sure a tin-foil sombrero won’t do the trick
Poor Joe. He INHERITED this horrible crisis.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he ask to be put in charge of it? Does he want to call backsies now?
Even Puddin’ knows he didn’t win.

Totally not an insane overreaction.
Had a great time meeting all the Glibs last night live and in the flesh. Wish I knew more about craft beer.
The major topic of discussion was craft beer??? NO. WAI.
Bipartisanship?
You can’t work with Satan. A man cannot worship the false god of consensus if it costs him his immortal soul. That’s just dumb.
As my Aussie colleague says, the trouble with wrestling in the mud with a pig is that after a while you realize the pig enjoys it.
“It’s going to take a looooong time for life to get back to normal.” No shit, Shirley?
Especially if morons like you keep listening to morons like Osterholm.
There is a large number of people who intend never to let life go back to normal.
That darned ratchet effect again.
Ratchets eventually fail when they over-tighten.
“Eventually” has a wide range, As I’ve mentioned before, nearly 20 years on we’re still taking our shoes off at the airport. “It’s just common sense”
+1 new normal
We have always been at war with
Eastasiacommon sense, each other, actual science, wrongthinkers, etc. etc. etc.Damn you and your lying eyes!
I’m not saying the people on Meet the Press live in a bubble, but they remind me of that time when Bush the Elder got roundly and deservedly mocked for presenting himself as a person who had never personally set foot in a grocery store in his life.
“Talk to actual living breathing Americans from Greater Flyoverlandia? Why on Earth would we? We have staff for that. And besides, we read the Washington Post every day and watch that splendid reasonable Scarborough feller, and they have their finger unerringly on the pulse of the nation. The Post tells us everything we need to know.”
“but they remind me of that time when Bush the Elder got roundly and deservedly mocked for presenting himself as a person who had never personally set foot in a grocery store in his life.”
TMITE old school edition.
This actually didn’t happen. It was a hit job by a NYT writer who wasn’t even there. Snopes even lists it as “false”:

For the nerds in the audience, the aurora forecast for tomorrow & Tuesday shows’ a KPI of 4. Strongest it’s been in a few weeks.
Churchill’s weather looks decent as well for Monday night.

I would Love to see aurora, but theres a bunch of crap in the sky, blocks my view,
/yells at clouds….
For now, we’ll have to settle for the digital variety. But it is still spectacular to see it happening live, even on a computer screen.
Bookmarked, I love web cam stuff, explore org
And Thanks KK, stupid phone ..
Have a look at Pipeline cam (just about sunrise in Oahu). Waves were 8-9′ yesterday. I think they’re supposed to be down today

Hadn’t realized the Dow dropped below 30k. I think the fat government money has somewhat dried up for the Rona and the slide will be happening soonish. But I was REALLY wrong about the last 6 months regarding the market.
Never underestimate the capability of the market to remain irrational for longer than you think it can.
My employer will be making its annual “profit sharing” 401(k) contribution any day now. Should I hope we catch mutual fund shares “on sale,” or should I ask if I can get all of mine in GME stock?
Serious journalism, for serious people
To say the end of his time in office was rocky would be to put it mildly. His relationship with Trump has been virtually non-existent since a mob of the former president’s followers stormed the U.S. Capitol in a failed attempt to assassinate Pence and overturn the outcome of the election. Before the Jan. 6 riot, Pence’s time with Trump had been defined by the vice president’s role as a loyal soldier.
WHEEEEEEEEE!
Does the ‘crowded theater’ thing just not apply anymore because of the Vid?

“she can’nae take any more, captain”
This actually didn’t happen. It was a hit job by a NYT writer who wasn’t even there. Snopes even lists it as “false”:
Spoilsport.
Hatchet job: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9205915/Jordan-Peterson-claims-suicidal-hooked-benzodiazepines.html
“In Moscow, Peterson was intubated for undiagnosed pneumonia and administered propofol – the drug responsible for killing Michael Jackson – so that he could be induced into a coma for eight days.
While in the coma, medics did a plasmapheresis to clean the drug out of Peterson’s system but when he regained consciousness, the psychologist still had a long road to recovery. ”
Sounds a bit extreme.
Pro-tip: don’t find yourself in the media spotlight especially if you are wrongthinker.
Never underestimate the capability of the market to remain irrational for longer than you think it can.
The market can remain irrational (far) longer than you can remain solvent.
I’m finding the same thing applies to reality lately.
Using the back door to kill an industry:
Vape shops are dead. Not only can they not send their products to willing customers, but they cannot even ship to other vape shops. They cannot order products to sell in their stores. They cannot engage in business.
This is evil, and I’m a little bit more than pissed that UPS and FedEx have followed suit due to the government banning using USPS to ship vape products.
I know several vape shop owners, and I know they’re already looking to buy trucks and form their own shipping, but I’m sure the bUiLd YoUr OwN sHiPpInG cOmPaNy argument will begin, and I’m sure it’ll be smothered by the left as well. It’ll either be banned outright, or else regulated so much it’s nearly impossible.
Shoved into the spending bill that Trump signed.
Cocksuckers.
Read the rest of that – it just gets worse from there.
Great. I can go back to smokes. Worthless assholes. Just utter fucking scum.
Yep.
And after switching from black market weed to perfectly legal Delta8 vapes, I’ll have to go back to black market weed.
Don’t you just love how they create criminals with a snap of their finger?
Well, Three Felonies a Day just isn’t enough.
I thought it was bad when Florida outlawed all flavored nicotine vapes, and I couldn’t get Vanilla. I wish I could have heard about this earlier, so I could have ineffectively bitched about it to my congresswoman.
PS. Just call it hookah and sue the fuck out of them.
DHL for shipping?
“James Sharpe, professor of history at the University of York, has described how Guy Fawkes came to be toasted as “the last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions”
Thanks for the links Webdom and nice song. That’s good stuff there. I always hated corn flakes.
Corn Flake was a bad dude…
I know this thread is dead, bu I must register my polite applause for that one.
Given his stated intentions, I’m kind of surprised he didn’t figure out a way to add saltpeter to them.
We missed you!!
