Since we’ve been going with big drinks the past couple of times, I’m going to tone it down a bit this time. On the downside, this does mean that you’ll need to pick up some new bottles (unless you’ve already got them on the shelf).
The first we’re going to talk about is a red bitter that hails from Italy: Campari. This can be served neat, chilled, mixed with soda, or in a cocktail. Since we were talking about Bond last week, let’s bring up another drink that Bond ordered in a book:
- 1 part Campari
- 1 part Sweet Vermouth
- Top with soda water
One thing you’ll notice about this drink (and the next) is that they include no high proof ingredients. So if you’re looking for something you can drink through the night, these may be up your alley. To build this drink, fill a rocks glass with ice, add in the Campari and vermouth, then top with soda water. Garnish with an orange twist.
For this next drink, we’ll need to get a bottle of maraschino liqueur. The standard brand is Luxardo (you may recognize that name from small jars of cherries).
- 12 parts dry vermouth
- 6 parts sweet vermouth
- 1 part maraschino liqueur
- 2 dashes orange bitters
This is another drink that will be stirred instead of shaken (the general rule is if the recipe is all spirit based, it’s stirred), then strained into a chilled cocktail glass and garnished with a cherry and a twist of lemon peel.
For the third drink this time, I’m going to break from my standard of going to old cocktails and bring up a modern one that both the girlfriend and I are a fan of. For this drink, you’ll need Benedictine liqueur. It’s from a book called Apothecary Cocktails. To really change it, this is also a hot cocktail, which if I was thinking about it, I could have riffed on earlier.
Cold Cure #1001
- 6 part hot peppermint tea
- 3 part Benedictine
- 2 part Sweet Vermouth
- 2 dashes of Jamaican bitters (though any will work)
Start by filling your mugs up with boiling water to preheat them. Start making your tea while the mugs are heating. Add the Benedictine and Vermouth to the warm mug, top with the peppermint tea, gently stir and add in the bitters. The herbal aroma of the Benedictine pairs well with the peppermint.
Since this was a break with the usual format, did you prefer this style, or would you prefer I stick with a single themed ingredient through the piece?
WTF? Tequila is cheaper.
^^ This. That is all I have to say. I might not remember it the next day though
My cocktail of choice:
1 part beer
Pour into glass
Enjoy irresponsibly
There’s a clause for that.
To wit: The party of the first part skips the party of the second part and concentrates on the party of the third part.
I was blind for three days.
It’s from a distant memory of a Marx brother’s skit. Adapted to the present issue, of course.
Mix it up! Do a theme sometimes, and this sometimes. I like both. And thanks, I’ll definitely have to try the peppermint tea one.
^^This
It’s a very nice change of pace from the traditional hot toddy.
Holy shit I have to buy oranges?
You have to have a stocked bar to make Neph’s drinks. Not that I am complaining but mine consists of Scotch, bourbon, maybe a vodka here and there, and beer.
I’m trying to ease into the more exotics. The Old Fashioned required just sugar, water, bitters, and whiskey.
And the oranges are used as a garnish, which I usually skip when making them for myself.
Im just messing. I enjoy these and have them bookmarked for when I want to entertain…and by entertain, I mean have a new drink for Zoom.
If I was really ambitious, I’d attempt to mimic the style of an old blogger (before they were called bloggers) who would do a monthly column on a classic cocktail, including the history, the changes over time, the ways the recipe changed through the years, and then an idea for a themed party focusing on the cocktail. The site stopped getting updates over 15 years ago (and I’ve lost the URL regardless). It’s what really got me interested in cocktails.
I am not that ambitious.
Spoiler alert: Glibs will get sucked into a wormhole and be transported back in time, setting us all on a collision course with TOS in the ancient days, where we all will become Tulpa.
That blogger was you, escaped from the wreckage, attempting to regain your sanity, hoping against hope that you don’t really know the happenings of 2008-2021, that it was all just a bad dream.
I have an often replenished bottle of tequila, bourbon, a dusty bottle of sweet vermouth that I wouldn’t drink, and a who knows how many year old bottle of bitters I would not drink. I am classless. Sansclass. Nulclass. I also have some Mango White Claws because I am super cool and the random local brews because why not I like beer too.
The sweet vermouth wouldn’t be spoiled, but the flavor may be off.
The bitters will have most likely lost some potency, but should still provide some kick.
My “apt” upstairs often exceeds 100 F in the summer and both those bottles are on a top shelf so I will replace because no. I need to make a shopping list so I can be one of the cool kids and have a cocktail on Friday instead of my standard Tequila, lime and soda in the free from the bank plastic cup. I am going to be cultured as fuck. Might even over night a smoking jacket order, but fuck I QUITE SMOKING! Ok, Ima going with a stained t-shirt.
I think my parents still have the same bottle of bitters from my childhood.
That may be the saddest thing I’ve ever read.
LOL, I moved to NYC in 2005 with an almost full bottle of Maker’s Mark. After a decade as a drunken New Orleans’ bartender (and being flabbergasted by NYC bar prices), I quit drinking. I finished the bottle in 2018, when I started drinking again. Now I drink a handle of Wild Turkey 101 per week. Sigh…
Since this was a break with the usual format, did you prefer this style, or would you prefer I stick with a single themed ingredient through the piece?
You be you. I am not going to dicktat how you do your articles. I am just glad you do them. Thanks Neph!
I slept though Cocktails 101 and 105 apparently. This format seems good! Can I go back to sleep?
I got some fancy grenadine & passion fruit syrup today. Still waiting on the orgeat.
I have a big passion fruit vine that produces all summer.
Wonder if I could do something useful with it?
Ooh, good quality grenadine is a nice thing to have in the fridge. I recommend a Clover Club, Mary Pickford or El Presidente with that stuff.
If there’s a glib meetup, I vote for it to be at Neph’s house.
I hear that the place to be is in AZ, at least from the stories
Seconded.

The Metropolitan cafe has been closed for quite a while now, but the Nautica Queen was still doing “cruises” before the lockdowns.
And it’s still the JAKE!
The difference between a diplomat and a lady (as told by an old Occidental College alum in the foreign service):
If a diplomat says yes, he means maybe; if he says maybe, he means no; if he says no, he isn’t a diplomat.
If a lady says no, she means maybe; if she says maybe, she means yes; and if she says yes, she isn’t a lady.
No doubt would be more amusing after a couple of those Diplomats.
There’s some rumors that the Diplomat was originally conceived as a low alcohol drink that a diplomat could order at events, keeping a drink in hand and keeping their wits about them. The drink dates back to the 1920’s.
https://youtu.be/16sT4yV43Cs
Conferring with my wife, this all checks out..especially after a few Diplomats.
My wife is an Oxy alum. I (we) got so very, very drunk at her reunion a few years ago…
Slight OT…okay not slight.
I was WFH today and after a meeting I looked to my right and my little dog had presented me with a bird and a wagging tail seeking confirmation of her job well done. Glad we bought the Lysol last week.
To make it not so OT, I will be having some bourbon tonight with a slice of lime for no reason other than to seem as fancy as Neph. 🙂
Did that show up on the meeting?
That would have been awesome!
Pets on Zoom
Politically active pets are out of luck in New Hampshire, where some lawmakers say they have been told to keep their cats and dogs out of the room when they log on for remote hearings.
Rep. Anita Burroughs, a Democrat from Glen, said her cats, Yoshi and Jack, have made appearances during several recent House Commerce and Consumer Affairs Committee hearings — including Wednesday, when Yoshi’s fluffy black-and-white face partially obscured her own as he moved in for some attention. No one objected at the time, but a colleague later passed along a message from the committee chair, Republican Rep. John Hunt of Rindge.
Pfft! People are working from home, pets, kids, are in the house.
My boss has the patience of a saint, the way his kid is constantly chiming in during meetings. The problem seems to be that his wife has been in India for weeks dealing with family issues. I guess it wouldn’t be seemly to scream at the little angel with everyone listening but I would have great difficulty not doing so.
Did anyone watching say “My, you have a nice pussy?”
Our just-turned-one pup has recently developed an incredibly loud bark that she deploys whenever someone is outside the house.
That’d be cool and all if we lived on a farm, in the middle of the city, not so much.
Apologizing for the dog during meetings has become de rigueur.
Good thing she’s cute.
I’m going to have to get Benedictine. I have sweet and dry vermouth and comparing. I have bitters, but not necessarily Jamaican bitters. What is special about Jamaican bitters?
It’s just another flavor style of bitters, like orange or chocolate bitters. Think more ginger/molasses/allspice type notes.
There was a time when a Brandy & Benedictine was a thing.
Heh, my uncle used to dig those back in the 80’s.
You can still get pre-mixed Dom B&B. It’s great in Egg Nog.
I love Benedictine, it’s about my favorite cocktail ingredient.
Here’s my suggestion: without giving away what concoctions will be discussed in your next article, tease it by listing the special ingredients that will be needed. Then people can try making one while the article is still at the top.
I’ll see what I can do to help on that. It’ll require a bit more planning then I’ve been doing so far, but should be possible.
The one I’m currently working on is dealing with some drinks for St. Patrick’s Day…
Green beer. Check.
Maybe something not too strong with Baileys, for us sissy lightweights?
I’ve suddenly developed a craving for Baileys.
Re: comparing, it is really bitter and yet it seems to leave sugar around the cap – I have to wipe it down or there are crystals at the screw cap. Weird.

“It is utterly embarrassing that “pay people enough to live” is a stance that’s even up for debate.
Override the parliamentarian and raise the wage. McD’s workers in Denmark are paid $22/hr + 6 wks paid vacation. $15/hr is a deep compromise – a big one, considering the phase in.”
Ummm Denmark doesn’t have a minimum wage…
Do you actually expect her to know that? Word on the street was fast food workers in the hey day of the ND fracking rush were paid $20 plus an hour. It’s amazing! A booming strong economy gets large wages! Who would have thunk such nonsense?
I don’t expect her to know anything.
And I bet that a Big Mac costs a fuck ton.
I cannot remember exactly but when I was there in 1998, a normal Micky D’s meal was like 15 American dollars or there about. I
According to the intertoobs, its 33 krone or about $6 for a Big Mac against about $4 here..from what I can find.
Big Macs in Denmark cost $7 ($5.60 + 25% VAT) vs $5.09 ($4.80 + 6% tax) in my state.
The taxes should be calculated in the total cost.
That’s a 38% differential.
Which in the end is a wash because their cost of living is about 30% higher.
This site shows a McMeal being more than 50% more expensive in Denmark.
Fuck that.
https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_countries_result.jsp?country1=United+States&country2=Denmark
On the other hand, you can order a beer along with that Big Mac and fries.
No Danegeld, dollars only
pay people enough to live
The minimum wage is already high enough that people can live on it. Can they live whatever lifestyle they please? No, but that’s why it’s the minimum wage; you can always go for more, if you can earn it.
Pshaw, next you’ll be saying that minimum wage jobs aren’t intended to be a career but just a stepping stone to a better job.
My cold cure is:

So, the ground is rumbling in Iceland and the thinking is that one of the volcanos might erupt. This being 2021, what do you do?
Set up a live stream, of course! Of course, right now it’s 1:30 AM in Iceland so still dark. But if the volcano does blow during the night, I assume it will be quite visible.
Global Warming!
Not masking hard enough!
Wait.. I’ve got
Trump’s fault!
Actually, volcano means global warming issue solved.
Oh goodie – another live cam that will keep me up all night watching!
I may have to get some advice on live streams at some point. We are thinking of setting up a bird feeder, and were thinking it would be fun to have a live cam streaming our Alaskan feathered friends.
Yes! Fun!
Also, you could set one up away from your house and point it at the sky. I think you need a wide-open aperture or something (I don’t know photography lingo) for auroras.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
After nearly 2 straight months of bombarding us with ThE iNsUrReCtIoN iN tHe HeArT oF dEmOcRaCy!! rhetoric, and a dearth of calling out Antifa during 3 straight months of continuous rioting and looting, and not a peep since the election except to provide cover, and people still don’t buy the narrative. We’ve been carpet bombed with shrieky rhetoric, and it’s not working.
This is a good sign. More people than not aren’t buying the shit they’re selling.
Of course the media completely whiffs on learning anything, however. When I heard about this I searched for an article. There were a billion and one articles from the same poll highlighting that a big chunk approve of Biden so far, while the only site I could find this tidbit on us one I’ve never heard of.

Good.
The media are like the Bourbons: They’ve learned nothing and forgotten nothing.
Everything the cornpop killer has done has been completely fucked for everyone involved. He’s yet to improve anyone’s lot. How can anybody approve of him?
We have war in ME again, shitloads of people storming the border, shitloads of other people losing their jobs, shitloads of other people’s money getting flushed down a toilet, everybody’s rights being dramatically curtailed. Who in the flying fuck approves of this shit?
But at least we have restore decency and normalcy in this country.

Hey westernsloper, we inverted your plan from earlier in the week and made shredded chicken tacos out of the leftover enchilada filling we made the other day.
Excellent! I never did the enchiladas because I had a bagged salad I needed to eat due to expiration. Shredded chicken goes well with a ceaser salad. Tonight is rice and beans with bratwurst and cheese and another ceaser salad. I am out of chicken.
Grilled shrimp salad.
I never think of Vermouth ad the main ingredient. I only see it as the second in a Martini or Manhattan or, of course, a Negroni (please).
May have to give the Diplomat a look.
There’s at one cocktail I’ve found that uses bitters as the main ingredient (the Trinidad Sour). I have not yet made it.
I… that sounds ugh.
It’s a strange enough cocktail that I’m going to have to try it at some point. It just seems wrong to use bitters as a main ingredient, and then use overproof rye as an accent.
It also uses orgeat, which I already have on hand.
I need to try the Americano. I always have the ingredients for a Negroni on hand, and I like the idea of something lighter once in a while.
PS. Which is why I enjoy Aperol now and then… it’s like a lighter Campari.
Just not a fan of the flavor of Aperol. Then again, I don’t like Campari either!
It is an acquired taste. Though, I acquired it pretty quickly.
Hell yes.
How do you feel about Fernet Branca? One of the local cocktail bars provided me a drink that used it as the bittering agent in it.
I feel like I have no idea what that is.
Yeah, approximately in the middle of my first sip of an Apero spritz (Aperol, Prosecco, Soda over ice and garnished with an orange slice). Damn that’s good.
We have a Haitian family friend who used to host parties every summer and she used to make kremas with rum Barbancourt. I wished I knew how to make it.
I’ve been mixing Claussen’s hearty garlic sandwich slices pickle juice with my Stroh’s, does that count as a cocktail?
Also what ever happened to Crusty?
Fucking hipster.
Negroni?
I miss that guy.

Democrats have already been talking about stripping him of his war powers. Pretty clear he isn’t in charge.
What are you even talking about? Biden is already the most popular president in history, his approval rating is 60 hundred thousand and eleventy leven million! You don’t read the polls, or what?
As long as we’re talking about potentially lethal doses…
South Carolina’s death penalty is on hold because it give convicts the option of choosing lethal injection…and there is no lawful method of lethal injection currently available, so naturally it’s what defendants choose.
Proposed legislation would empower the court in death penalty cases to impose the electric chair – or perhaps even a firing squad – over the objection of the defendant, if lethal injection is unavailable.
Dems say – if you’re forbidding abortion, how come you allow execution?
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9322973/South-Carolina-senators-add-firing-squad-alternative-method-death-penalty.html
Oh, and, the seque about lethal doses was strictly a joke – I’m sure Nephilium’s dosages are excellent!
Because the unborn have committed no crimes.
*shrug* I’m against both, but neither is a top issue for me. I guess I would make a poor Democrat or Republican in South Carolina.
SC is my favorite state to want to live in. As soon as I get there, they’ll find Lindsey eaten by gators, I had nothing to do with it.
I really dug Charleston the one time we went. As in, “I could live here”. Granted, it was February, so maybe I should check it out in August before moving.
Greenville, baby!
I’m (weakly) in favor of both, but neither is a top issue for me.
My practical objection to the death penalty is that the State is so prone to fucking things up that there’s a decent chance the guy is actually innocent. Some dudes need killin’ (looking at you, child rapists), but I just can’t trust the State with that power.
That is the argument that my brother used to win me over.
I admit to being conflicted though. I was,—not sure the right word; happy isn’t right but—I was not displeased when Tim McVeigh got the needle.
I don’t care what he thought about Waco. It didn’t give him the right to kill and maim all those innocents in the building. What he called “collateral damage.”
Yep. I don’t get people that think the govt shouldn’t be trusted to set the minimum wage, but are cool with it giving out the maximum punishment.
This X1000!
I have a friend who works for The Innocence Project and she always had trouble with my position that killing those who aggress against others is fine and dandy, but the state can’t even competently deliver the mail; I can’t trust them to get it right.
You are sentenced to Leisure World where you will surely die of COVID.
And another execution-related story –
“Canadian conservation officer, 37, fired for refusing to kill two orphaned bear cubs in 2015 files lawsuit to be reinstated with a salary of up to $75,000 and to receive up to five years of back pay

“He made headlines when he refused an order to kill the cubs after he had shot dead their mom for repeatedly raiding a freezer of mobile home near Port Hardy [British Columbia?]
“Last year, Casavant won one battle when a judge ruled that Casavant acted within the law when he decided to rescue to cubs instead of killing them
“Despite that ruling he was not allowed to return to his job; in fact, his badge was not reactivated and his uniform was not reissued by the government
“His lawyer is asking that Casavant receive a salary between $55,000 to $75,000

Evidently, the next person to use the machine took it to the station staff. I came back half an hour later and got the money. Awesome!
I found a couple thousand yen notes on the ground last month outside the station just last month. I turned it in to the Koban (police box). Karma maybe?

Anxiety producer for me: hearing something odd that might have been the sound of something being dropped. If I can’t find the thing, I can get really nervous.
that pays off though! Last week I was taking the mail out of our post office box and there was a slight metallic cling on the floor. So I look around, and at first I don’t see anything, then I find a tiny screw. A tiny screw fell out of my mail? How weird, right? But then I look at the mechanism of the lock for the box, which yes, somehow, lost a screw that holds the lock on the little door.
I took the screw to the counter – and since this was the post office I figured they’d have to call the Box Maintenance person tomorrow, but to actually give props where due, the window clerk closed her window, grabbed a screwdriver, and fixed my box right then.
, the window clerk closed her window, grabbed a screwdriver, and fixed my box right then.
That’s… shocking. The least Post-Office-behavior imaginable.
That postal worker is as mythical as a libertarian woman.
“fixed my box right then.”
Bow chicka wow.
doubly so if I don’t know what I’m looking for, so I might find something and not be sure it was the only thing that fell.

Yeah, the work makes it irreplaceable.
The watch thing was my fault. I knew that cat had a penchant for biffing stuff off my nightstand to get my attention, and I had a small wastebasket there. I should have figured the odds were high that the watch would eventually find its way there.
Now I wear a far uglier smart watch.

I’ve got my hands full with working, doing housework, taking care of sick husband (med infusions, checking vitals, helping him get up, etc).
So I’m considering one of the home meal prep subscriptions like Hello Fresh, Home Chef, etc. That way there’s healthy variety without shopping and coordinating side dishes. Brain-free.
I’ve used Home Chef in the past and liked them pretty well.
Do any of you have experience or recommendations with this kind of service?
Indirect, but my brother has been raving about Hello Fresh – “I’m actually cooking now”.
YeH, they get good reviews.
I liked that the one I was on before threw in items I’d never cooked before, like acorn squash.
I’ve just finished the second week of Home Chef. There’s an AmEx Platinum card offer with $50 off $50 (thrice). I’ve been cooking all the meals myself (the partner is teaching until 9:15pm Mo-Th). While our priority has been minimizing cooking time, it’s fine to cook something more involved–I even feel good doing it. The ingredients quality is good. Would I be feeling so happy about it paying the full price? Probably, not. But I hate paying the full price for anything.
I’m confident I could cook cheaper if I did the planning and shopping myself.
But in accordance with good advice I was given when similarly stretched thin, “Buy yourself some time.”
So for now at least, reviving my Home Chef account will be the way to go. It’s easy to skip days or weeks too.
I’ll log in and see what’s changed in the last 5 years.

So I heard there’s going to be an insurrection today, I heard about it on the news…..

Yo! Homey! You go to the WPCU ATM in our ‘hood, right? What the HELL do folks do at that machine?? For the second day in a row, the ATM for MY credit union – the one I go right past on my way home – was not dispensing cash. (GRRRRR!!!) So I pondered the nearby alternatives, and Wright-Patt’s was the only one not well out of my way. I got in line, and two of the folks ahead of me took AGES to do their transactions. WTF??? I’d swear the closing on our house went more quickly!
I know, specially this time of month. Its like they take 20 minutes to review their investment portfolio.

Good morning!
To you as well, Good Sirrah!

Interesting that a positive Covid diagnosis in the past indicating the naturally acquired equivalent of a vaccine doesn’t cover someone but a vaccine does, not that this should be a thing. Seems arbitrary and capricious to me but that doesn’t matter anymore.
Oh! But they’re the party of PSY-ENCE!
I wish that I could be a Rebel and a Loner about all of this mummery but a Man’s got to eat.
Heh. When they cut Puddin’ Cup off it should have gone to the old “Indian head” logo.
