Weird weather here, signalling the winter is going out and our schizophrenic spring is on it’s way. One the plus side, masks are slowly going the way of the dodo.
Let’s see what we can find in the news to trigger ourselves!
If true, Joe has some decisions to make, or not. But he will.
If you know Highway 1, this is known as winter.
Bill Gates has done such great things with his money, remember the genetically modified mosquitos he released in Brazil that created a breed of super mosquitos? He’s far from done.
Welp, that’ll get you through until Zoom starts. Peace out, Glibbies.
Whipping Post is far superior to Freebird, and I am a fan of the latter.
I concur.
Holy drum sets batman!
So.. at the Music Instrument Museum down in Arizona, they did have this drum set. If you can’t read the little card:
Two fantastic albums.
I liked the Music Instrument Museum. There was really cool stuff to see and you get to hear music too.
The biggest set I’ve seen live was Mike Portnoy’s 2 Headed monster kit during the Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence tour in 03.
Or
Neil Peart on any of the 8 times I’ve seen Rush.
Sure but for overlong southern rock dreck you can’t beat “Dreams I’ll Never See”
Molly Hatchet > Lynyrd Skynyrd > Allmans Bros
Molly Hatchet’s original line ups. What happened to that band after Lightning Strikes Twice, I think it was, was very sad.
Truth.
I’m not surprised you like Free Bird.
Gawd I hate these people.
Then drugs fell out of their asses.
It was in there before I checked the morning links. I was too lazy to take it out.
I did not need to look at Janet Yellens face again. You are the wurst.

*wipes brow* I have been on the edge of my seat over that one.
At least dad’s head isn’t jammed so far up his own ass it pops back out up to and looks normal.
My aunt told me about it. Isn’t it crazy. I’m like WTF.
There doesn’t seem to be too much faith that this vaccine works….
They want you to continue wearing masks (double or triple masks are even better!), and getting tested, even well after your second dose. This shit isn’t about science.
And it’s clear that the bureaucrat doctors and the actual doctors seeing patients are not together on this one. My wife went to the doctor twice in a week because of a cough, and they did not feel the need to test her either time because she didn’t meet very specific criteria (wasn’t around someone infected for an extended period), which says the doctors on the ground seem to disagree with the “we need people to continue getting tested furiously” bullshit being spouted by bureaucrats.
https://www.wkyt.com/2021/02/27/health-experts-push-importance-of-getting-covid-19-tested-even-if-youre-vaccinated/
It’s not a traditional “vaccine” if I understand correctly, so I don’t expect any of this theater to end unless the people are revolting.
My understanding is that the end result is the same (immune response to the virus) but the concern is that people may become asymptomatic carriers even with the vaccine.
It would seem to me that it’s an even more ridiculous concern than regular asymptomatic spread, which is a rounding error.
You said it they stink on ice!
I don’t know about revolting, but the very second I get my second shot (I don’t even have my first, and am in no hurry), I won’t wear a mask at all under any circumstances. Not even as a courtesy to businesses.
I’m already at the stage just below, which (for me) is to wear no mask as the default, and only out one on if a representative of a company asks me to, and there’s a good chance I’ll just walk out if he/she does rather than comply.
So neither was smallpox vaccine. Or at least the historical cowpox version of that vaccine.
“unless the people are revolting”
“They sure are!”

The trial for the J&J vaccine had 7 deaths in the placebo group of 22,000 people. A 0.032% mortality rate. There’s nothing for the vaccine prevent. This is like when Baghdad Bob did his propaganda thing with American tanks in the background.
I have not reviewed the trial details, but I’m assuming they excluded the very old and those with severe comorbidities. If so, this would be the true mortality rate of covid for the majority of the population.
They did exclude old people.
When the FDA issues the EUA, it will likely be for people ages 18-65.
I doubt it. Moderna’s trial didn’t have anyone over 80 in it. There is no upper age limit for use.
‘The trial for the J&J vaccine had 7 deaths in the placebo group of 22,000 people. A 0.032% mortality rate.’
If true, that’s a mortality rate roughly on par with receiving a colonoscopy.
We should destroy the world’s economy and implement a mixture of Marxism and Fascism until we purge the world of deaths by insurance covered ass probing.

There are very few things I don’t like. Okra is one of them.
I thought you had serious problems, and this confirms that suspicion.
Okra is disgusting. Nick has some serious problems but that is not one of them.

Oh yeah. I like that song.
Former Acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell didn’t rule out running for California governor after teasing a potential challenge to Gov. Gavin Newsom in his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
Yuck. A swamp creature as a possible replacement for Newsom if the recall goes through? Assuming he is a swamp creature, he did work for Trump. Did McConnel suggest Grenell?
Orbital Assembly Corp., a California-based startup that wants to pioneer construction and infrastructure in outer space, has hit its $1 million fundraising goal and aims to open an operational luxury hotel in orbit in 2027.
Screwing in space would be interesting.
Do you get a tax writeoff for holding conferences at space hotels, or does the new global tax eliminate such loopholes?
Screwing the motion of…nothing?

Yeah, that’s not enough money to launch a bedbug larva into space.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9306371/Son-Weather-Underground-militant-says-dad-vaccinated-prison-serving-life.html
Why am I not shocked that the kid of a weather underground terrorist is a DA in San Francisco?
Ya, I kind of did a double take and then said, “yep, makes sense.”
He’s a true red-diaper baby. Supposedly funded by Soros, to boot.
He was raised by Barack Obama’s good friends Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn since both his parents were in prison. He also worked as an interpreter for Hugo Chavez.
That may sound all like Alex Jones conspiracy theory stuff to say about the San Francisco DA, but no it’s 100% true.
This kid was given every advantage and opportunity in life because of who his parents and his parents’ friends were. Being chic terrorists is apparently more advantageous than the being the normal kind.
Because fucking of course she was.
Terrorism is only bad when right wingers do it.
She meant well. Because she cares.
Yes, the outrage that elderly prisoners in congregate living that the state has assumed the responsibility for their care and safety should be vaccinated ahead of lower risk persons. Outrage!
Hooray! That’s going to suck for Ireland.
Set corporate tax rates to zero. Problem solved.
They’ll blame Brexit for their Troubles.
I read one version of that story (not sure if it’s the same one linked), and what struck me about the tone of the piece was that it was all centered around the logistics and mechanics of how to tax these profits. There was no discussion of the purpose of taxes or the need for income or anything. It was just: here are profits, they must be taxed.

I was joking about the HCQ killing people. Follow along.

As I’ve mentioned, I have a true crime themed “page a day” calendar. Today’s crime is a bizarre escape from the grim news.
First, the discovery:
What kind of wierdo breaks into a museum for feathers? This kind:
But how?
Why?
Rist’s use of his loot:
That’s…disappointing after the oddity of the rest of the tale.
The justice:
Sounds like a Will Farrell movie pitch.
To be fair, high quality musical instruments can get very expensive.
“tens of thousands of dollars he made on the feather underground”
This gives me hope for this timeline.

When I was working in the Smithsonian as an AV contractor, some cow-orkers and I came up with a plan to clean out the Blue Vault (contains the Hope Diamond, among other things) that I’m pretty sure we could have pulled off.
The security in all of the Smithsonian museums is not great. The biggest reason that they haven’t been hit more often, is that they just don’t have a whole lot of stuff on display that you could sell.
Every couple years I hear about some major art theft, Munch’s The Scream was one, and the paintings always seem to turn up unsold, tucked away somewhere. These objects are so famous that no one would take them off the thieves’ hands.

Leaving aside the less 100% efficacy of all vaccines, polio vaccine is a perfect example of vaccines not providing full sterilizing immunity yet are good enough for purpose- IPV has been shown to have viral shedding in challenge studies while OPV has led to vaccine derived polioviruses and corresponding outbreaks.
MrFamous is exactly right in his reply about the lack of proportionality in assessing risk. I’d also add the danger of arguing against the authoritarians on utilitarian grounds, despite the emotional appeal. It concedes ground and accepts that under some scenario, they’re acceptable. And they are not, even if the IFR was 80%.

Gregory Hines said that he and his brother were compared to them when they were young. At the time, he had never seen them dance and thought to himself, “Well, I’m pretty good, they must be pretty good too.” Then he saw them dance and said “Yeah, I’ll never be that good.”

Re: Earlier beer discussion
Isn’t the independent brewery movement getting a little silly? Here’s what “Naked Brewery” in Kennett Square, PA, is touting (from today’s local newsrag):
“a fluffy and full-flavored hazy double dry hopped IPA” called “Cat-a-Pillar.” The label features “a cat grooving on a mushroom” and the artwork is described as “Woodstock psychedelic Alice in Wonderland-esque.”
Breweries often double as Taprooms/Pubs, I know I enjoy lunch and some good local beer from time time, many people do,
There’s some pushback from some of the newer breweries just naming their beer by the style instead of coming up with new and unique names for every beer. It also doesn’t help that with all of the breweries trying to come up with new and unique names, there’s been several instances of multiple breweries using the same name for different beers.
Every market has a stoner brewery. Usually they’re terrible.

Pretty sure our world is being run by 8chan. We’re all its pawns.
Too good not to share (which of you wrote it?)
“It’s bound to backfire. In our frenetic necrophobia, we flee death, avoiding contact with others, locking ourselves in our homes, obsessively washing our hands, avoiding public places and gatherings—all for the sake of survival. But a life without human touch, a life in which we never venture, a life without risk is no life at all, but a living death. To preserve bare life at all costs is suicide. To elevate bare life as the supreme value, we have to make the supreme sacrifice of life itself. And so we flee from death, and find ourselves rushing to death’s embrace, strangely comforted. Our necrophobia becomes necrophilia.”

Thanks Hank, when I go into a rage with some of my masked friends that’s what I sound like, only with out the big words.
My daughter works in a nursing home, required to mask up. She lets her mask slip so the old people can see her smile, when she’s alone with a client.
Old folks need that, especially. They are already on the downhill side. I really can’t understand my friends being so frightened, we see the pages of the calendar slipping away, it’s like saving the ice cream for later.
We’re past the best used by date and we’re supposed to be worried? WTF is that all about.
Thanks, and like Fourscore I am inclined to express similar sentiments far less eloquently. Life is far too short to waste worrying about its inevitable ending.
I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been saying since the beginning that there is more to life than the elimination of all risk.
The cheesy line from Braveheart comes to mind: “Every man dies. Not every man truly lives.”
One of the things that 4 years in the Marine infantry as a young man taught me was that death smiles at us all; the best we can do is smile back.
Arkansas governor lifts most Lil Rona Panic restrictions
Effective immediately, Arkansas is lifting nearly all restrictions on businesses related to the coronavirus pandemic. Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced Friday that all capacity limits on businesses and large gatherings will only be recommendations, and not enforceable by law.
Speaking in a news conference at the state Capitol, Hutchinson said the goal is to give businesses more flexibility to tailor public health guidelines to better fit with their day-to-day operations.
“They are incentivized to follow the guidelines because that gives them business liability protection, because the business liability protection is based upon following public health guidelines and making a good faith effort to make sure everyone is safe in their employment,” Hutchinson said. “And so it does not mean a change in behavior that you will see.”
Hutchinson says the statewide mask mandate will remain in effect until at least March 31. He says if the state meets certain criteria, including having a seven-day rolling average of positive COVID-19 tests under 10%, or fewer than 750 Arkansans hospitalized with the virus if testing is diminished, then the mask mandate will end on that date.
I should stop with the Daily Mail links, but they’re like a cornucopia of clickworthy material, much of it newsworthy (more newsworthy than at certain other media sources, anyway).
Let me try to outdo their headline writers in describing this.

When the home health nurse came out today and showed me how to give the daily infusion of antibiotics into my husband’s PICC line, she had to ask various questions for the form.
One section was about social health and interaction.
“Do you have a group outside the home, like a church, you meet with?”
“Not since lockdown.”
“Do you go to any other club meetings?”
“Not anymore. The Moose lodge is closed and so is the VFW.”
“How often do you see relatives?”
“It’s been over a year now.”
She made some “Hmms” and other sounds of surprise/concern.
Where the hell else are supposed to go meeting people? Even the golf club is closed to indoor dining so we don’t see friends at the “corner pub” any more. He can’t play with a band or even go see live music.

I’m happy for you, dude. 2020 was an incredibly shitty year for you. Glad to see you find a measure of happiness this cycle around the sun.
Awesome dude!
I’ve learned to love mushrooms again… When I was about 6, I ate a can of mushroom soup and threw up, then I never liked them. In my late 20s, I got sick of having to avoid them and ask for “no mushrooms” at restaurants. So one day, I bought a box of mushrooms, fried them in butter, and forced myself to eat every single one. Seneca was right – the things we’re afraid of are not a fraction as bad as we imagine them to be.
Now I can chow down on some fungus with no issue. In fact, one of my favorite foods is Neapolitan-style pizza with capicola and portobella mushrooms. Da bomb.
Ha I had something similar. At a pretentious fart’s house for lunch – he served a bunch of 16-year-old kids a plate of mushrooms each. WTF? I couldn’t eat it.
I still question the texture but I love the flavor in stews and such.
Mushrooms are one of many items on the list of things I hated (or thought I hated) when I was younger that I love now.
The Shop people say Maitake is the best, and I have plenty, and I guess I can get them whenever I want, cool Job,
Yea, the texture can be odd. My favorite way to enjoy them is sliced very thin and roasted or fried, e.g. baked on a pizza or in a stir-fry.
I’m even thinking about starting a shitake mushroom farm in my yard, but growing mushrooms is a whole science in itself.
I like stuffing an omelet with fried onion, bell peppers, ham, and mushrooms (all diced). The mushroom adds an element which really enhances the experience.

BERGEN STRONG!
This is truly la-la land. In my nabe there are signs on lawns objecting to bear hunts, presumably because the bruins are so cute in suburban settings.
I have lived in major bear habitats in the western states and I never saw bears on some many different occasions as when I did the NJ portion of the Appalachian Trail. They were everywhere. NJ needs a hunt to both cull numbers and to remind them they are not #1 on the food chain.
(Note about grizzly bear country. Man is wise to remember that he is number 2 on the food chain there and act like it.)
You bet we do. The Appalachian trail is God’s country, not surprising to see bears there. I am 12 miles from Manhattan and woke up one morning to see a black bear cub (cute little guy, when they caught him they estimated 180 lbs) in my next-door neighbor’s driveway. Did not stick around to see if mama was nearby.

Episode 1844 if Tom Woods podcast is about restaurant owners (a husband and wife team, Woodchips BBQ, trying to defy Michigan’s draconian and baseless virus lockdown “rules”.
One infuriating thing they shared was that when Michigan courts said the Governor doesn’t have the power to put those rules in place, the Michigan Health & Human Services issued the exact same rule the Governor had.
When the restaurant decided to open up anyway, the local sheriff said he wouldn’t enforce anything against them. The police said they’d have to file a complaint if anybody did complain but otherwise wouldn’t mess with them.
The judicial branch did the right thing, the law enforcement did, and the legislature abdicated its powers to the executive.
So the executive took total command and pulled the restaurant’s liquor license because they’d committed a crime on premises, and the crime was an unconstitutional executive fiat.
What the heck happened to balance of power? We have elected emperors and near-hereditary bureaucrats.

And the people who say Trump is a “threat to Democracy” are cheering while governors and unelected health bureaucrats trample the separation of powers.
I forgot how fun this movie is.
