GlibFit 4.0 – Coronavirus Edition LI: Crossrope Fuller Review

by | Mar 7, 2021 | Fitness, GlibFit | 177 comments

Two months ago, I wrote a partial review of the Crossrope system. I bought their Get Fit Bundle which includes two sets of handles and four ropes.  The ropes are steel cable coated in some sort of plasticized covering.  The Get Fit Bundle includes ¼, ½, 1-, and 2-pound ropes.

I found there was a little learning curve transitioning from a store-bought jump rope to Crossrope.  I think it stems from the heavier weight which initially has some effect on your jumping cadence. It only took a short time to adapt.

I never weighed my off the shelf jump rope, but it is lighter than the ¼ pound Crossrope.  I noticed early on getting a better workout with the Crossrope.  Stepping up to the ½ pound rope definitely increased the intensity.  As I mentioned in another article, I think this is somehow more than doubling because you are constantly exerting force on a weight moving in a circular path.  Whatever the truth, moving up was a challenge.

Yesterday I stepped it up and used the 1-pound rope for the first time.  Crossrope suggests the use of the second set of handles, which are thicker, for the 1- and 2-pound ropes.  More on the handles in a moment.

Going up to 1 pound was another new challenge.  Initially I noticed the additional momentum and if I didn’t stay focused, I found myself slowly moving off center and off my mat.  Crossrope generally categorizes the two lighter ropes as designed for cardio and the two heavier ropes as a full body workout.  I think that’s about right.  I’m a little sore today from the 1-poundrope. I wasn’t from either of the lighter ropes.

The handles come in two sizes, slim and power.  I estimate the width of the slim handles at about ¾ inch.  The power handles I estimate at 1 ¼ inches.  The difference is noticeable.  When I first started with the system, I did not like the slim handles because they were a major change from the store-bought rope.  Because they are much slimmer, I had to grip them differently and felt like I had a less secure grip.  I did but not because of their build.  I came to realize how involved my forearms are using these weighted ropes.  As my strength and endurance improved, my concern receded.  Now I can whip the lighter ropes with a confident grip.

Both sets of handles have a rubber coating.  It has been effective and I haven’t noticed any slipping even when I’m sweaty.  Summer will be the real test.

If you use Crossrope, I strongly suggest getting a rubber mat.  They sell a couple of their own, you could get one from a sporting goods store, or get rubber gym “tiles” from Home Depot.  It is good for your ankles and knees and will preserve the coating on the ropes.

All in all, I am very pleased with Crossrope and highly recommend it.    For anyone who is space or time constrained, jumping rope is an excellent workout. Many of the Gliberatti have told us about their preferred type of conditioning exercise and I encourage everyone to do whatever works for you. If you are looking for something new or additional, give this a try.

California’s seven-day average of Covid cases continues to plunge. Yet, we are the only state that keeps gym shuttered due to the governments overreaction to coronavirus.  Newsom is such a panic monger.  Fortunately, it looks like there is a reasonable chance he will get recalled.

If this recall turns into the free for all it was last time, then I may toss my hat in the ring. Kids want a savior, don’t need a fake, I wanna be elected.

Great Song, exercise is too much work, I work enough as it is,

I agree, fortunately my job keeps me in pretty good shape, and being thin is an asset, you might get cold, but that’s what clothes are for,

      • Tres Cool

I concur. According to my FitBit/GPS-enabled gov’t tracking device, I did over 16,000 steps at work the other night.

I should get one of those, I’m interested in knowing how far I Actually walk, it’s in the Miles range for sure,

      • Tres Cool

akshually, it was 18,073 steps (7.96 miles) , and that was over 7 hours or so since it resets @ 0000h
In the interest of accuracy I shave 10-20% off that number since I use my hands a lot and I dont know how it interprets that

Protip- never wear your FitBit while browsing pr0nhub. Once mine thought I jogged/rowed 8 miles when I never left the house

Back on the exercise routine and feeling better. Flomax for a couple weeks and the prostate seems to like it. Best I’ve felt all winter. Just want to lose a little stubborn belly fat but that seems to not want to cooperate. Thanks Chafed. Good to have some motivation.

Oh, after many years of high coffee consumption I cut down to about 1/6 of my old daily use (about 2 quarts). I went into caffeine withdrawal the first day and night but by the second evening it was over.

      I’m glad to help.

Glad you are doing well, Fourscore. See if upping the protein doesn’t help with the belly fat.

So my neurologist has me going to a physical therapist, mostly in preparation for a cortisone shot that I have coming up for arthritis in my spin. (yeah)

But, she showed me a new stretch that is dramatically helping, a nerve glide for my left leg. Started seeing strong increases in the amount of time I can do leg lifts on that side, which is an incredible plus. In other words, I am getting ready for my eight-state week-long road trip. Wherein I might break a few rules on what I do with my body.

    • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

It’s surprising to me how many people don’t know about nerve glides; they saved me after years of dealing with brachioradial pruritus (a form of peripheral neuropathy) back in the early Oughts.

      • Chafed

Help a brother out. What is a nerve glide?

Interesting. Thanks. This seems much more mild than traditional stretching.

We do Stretch and Flex every morning. Most people just stand around and listen to music or talk.

        Thanks D!

      • westernsloper

That stretch helped with my nerve impingement due to the disc herniation.

I’m going to ask my doc for a referral to an orthopedic doc. Both my feet are effed up but in different ways. One has relatively new and very painful Achilles’ tendon damage (often a side effect of psoriatic arthritis, which I have) and the other foot with something wrong with the top/outer. That one is very painful and unstable, especially on first standing. It’s plantar fasciitis-like in that pattern but in an entirely different spot. Hoping for brace and PT options.

For the spouse, I am going to have to listen to the PT myself and become the enforcer. He’s still on a walker, and now that he has a DVT on top if the rest, I want him to get some movement.

  9. Lazer

Usual work, 8-12,000 steps a day, MWRF. Made it to the gym Tuesday and got the squats, military press, hang cleans, and pull ups in.

Called later Tuesday to get some lime-sand to fill up the whole under my house 22x10x4,(an old cellar maybe) they called Wednesday morning and were on their way! OH, I thought I would have the weekend to clean shit out of the way! So, no gym the rest of the week, spent about 1.5 hours after work W/R/F shoveling in the lime-sand, crawling through the small whole, shoveling it around. Spent from 08:30 to 14:30 doing the same, (had a one hour break) did have a couple friends show up to help.

I thought I had ordered just a little extra, to go ahead and put as a driveway; well I guess I ordered A LOT extra, will have a bigger driveway as soon as a friend can get over with his skid steer. (the lady who figured the dimensions I gave said I’d need 53 tons, I think I have about 20-22 tons left!)

Might get to gym today, but probably will work on yard

    • Tundra

      Those are solid friends!

      • Chafed

They sure are. You know, I need to move some furniture….

I walked 2 miles twice this week, and I took a couple of baby steps in the eating right department.

Lots of grilled stuff with salad.

I’ve got a long ways to go, but some level motivation, however low, has returned, which is a good sign.

  11. DEG

I like Alice Cooper. Back in the before times, I saw him perform in Boston. Excellent show.

    This sounds interesting.

Conditioning work for me has been a mix of the Airdyne bike and sled pushing. I haven’t used battle ropes or the stairmaster in a while. For both the Airdyne bike and the stairmaster, I’ve used fast/slow intervals.

Earlier today I was at a “Fuck the Governor” breakfast/brunch/lunch. No one wore masks. People shook hands. Several people carried guns openly. The food was delicious. I think I ate enough food for two days of normal consumption, but it was worth it.

My current bodyweight is 274 lbs at 27.5% bodyfat. My bodyfat percentage drop seems to have stalled out. The last several weeks, according to my weight tracking, have bounced around the same level. Bodyweight over the same time had, except for one week, a steady downward trend. My weights have improved, until this week when I had a setback.

I was pushing myself through some push presses, without my trainer watching me, and got sloppy. Yep, I banged the herniation into the nerve. Ouch. After things had settled down, I picked up my workouts again. Deadlift day with a squat day after some rest. I discovered I am not bracing my core properly, and my back is getting a bit out of alignment, pushing the herniation into the nerve. I was in a good bit of pain yesterday. Today is OK. I had talked with my trainer, and he’s thinking a) I should go through a de-load week since I’ve been pushing myself pretty hard the last few weeks, and b) time for a new program with more core work. We’ll talk more on Tuesday.

    • Chafed

Damn DEG, I thought if anyone would emphasize good form it would be you. Get back to strict form. You don’t want another injury.

      • DEG

Yep. Last week wasn’t a good week.

WRT to FitBit- since 2019 they’ve been part of Google. And despite getting an email about their “we wont share anything” privacy policy, its….Google.
I have the GPS disabled (they say), but my sleep history, heart rate, steps, all correlated to day/time belongs to Alphabet, Inc. Along with any data Ive entered for weight, diet, etc.

Though I do wonder if any of that falls under HIPAA, and disclosure is less likely.

HAH! Who am I kidding ?

    • Mojeaux

That bugs me too, but I didn’t know FitBit was part of EvilCorp.

Having read what I just typed, and knowing there’s an AppleWatch or 2 laying around here that Jugsy decided were unsuitable, I may switch and give them my data instead. After all, they took a quasi-positioned stance about unlocking the San Bernardino shooter’s phones.
Plus, each time Im having chest pain, I can see if its A-Fib or a muscle.

    • slumbrew

I’m in the same boat – love my FitBit, not at all happy Google owns them now (AFAIK, the regulator approval just finalized, which is when they sent out that e-mail).

I’d be open to an alternative – really like the sleep tracking. Maybe a Garmin Vivofit.

I also have a FitBit scale, though – perhaps I should just pledge my data allegiance to Withings (they have trackers and a scale). Since they’re owned by a European company (Nokia) they _might_ be less carefree with my data.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        Am I not getting through?
check out what I got down below

      • slumbrew

I follow; I want the data logged, just not to Google.

I’m not going to manually enter the data in a spreadsheet like some sort of Dark Ages serf…

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I get it Tuesday, and let you know what can do, it may fit your needs,

      • DEG

I’m not going to manually enter the data in a spreadsheet like some sort of Dark Ages serf…

I enter the data into a plain text file using vi like the Lord intended.

      • DEG

        Heh.

On a serious note, I actually keep my weight tracking in a text file which I edit with vi.

      • slumbrew

        I gathered 😉

I could go back to that but I like the convenience of the data automatically uploading.

The Garmin fitness tracker looks nice – blood oxygen estimation would be a nice addition, if it’s at all accurate.

The question becomes, did their high-profile woes last year lead to better information security or are they still questionable?

    • Chafed

If past is prologue then he is still around. Unfortunately, this is not the first time something like this has happened. As far as I know, he has neither taken up any Glibs offer to talk offline/help nor seen a therapist. I feel for him. I just don’t know how to help someone who won’t do anything.

      • DEG

I remember stuff like this coming from him before, but this seemed…. different.

You can’t help the unwilling. At some point, you have to move on. I haven’t quite hit that point for when I see him posting like that.

      • Chipping Pioneer

I get that he’s in a dark place. But it’s a dick move to repeatedly post like that when good people here are obviously going to be concerned and to offer help, then to not take that help or get some elsewhere.

My guess we all have had periods of depression when it seems like nothing is going right. Sometimes we have to sit down and talk to ourselves, mentally or verbally.

When I get depressed I think of those kids on TV at the Shriner’s or the other Kid Hospital. Then I realize my problems are minuscule and they really are . I have a helluva time complaining when I look around and see other folks that have real problems.

Dinner being 15 minutes late seems trivial in comparison.

I find anger to be a great uplifter, it focuses the mind, I’m in a great mood today but still very angry.

I signed up for the Bataan Memorial Death March after I had heard about it due to Gary Johnson’s participation. I knew that it was for a good cause, but there are tons of good causes out there and I really signed up for the physical challenge. The day before my march, I wound up hearing Ben Steele speak.

I didn’t know Ben from a hole in the ground, although his artwork was on display and is impressive. Turns out there was a book written about him which I’ve since read. It’s worthwhile. Hearing him speak changed my life (for the better).

I vowed to return to BMDM every year as long as some of the participants in the real Bataan Death March still returned. Each year I got to hear stories of BDM participants, including John Mims.

At times I feel more than a bit guilty. Perhaps I’m the bad guy, or at least a vampire, by taking inspiration from their suffering. OTOH, at least I’m lucky enough to know that I’ve lived an exceedingly charmed life.

I hope Commodious reads this. He’s a great guy and I look forward to getting together with him again.

Thanks for the review of the ropes, they sound pretty sweet. As far as rubber mats, any Fleet Farm/Tractor Supply will sell stall mats. They are tough and very cost effective.\

Jumping exercises make me nervous, though. Imma keep doing hills and hockey for my conditioning.

Sorry to hear that your cunte is keeping the gyms shut. I’m still visiting the ‘speak three times a week. No mask, no chalk and good company. I may be done with the corporate gym.

Otherwise, my week was pretty solid. Food was good, I got my minimum of 4 miles in every day (6.2 today), sleep was mostly ok. I gotta tighten up the beer consumption though….

I ordered some ancillary bee equipment today. Free shipping and it only has to come 50 miles so should arrive this week or next. About 2 months before we have to pick up the bees. Hope we have a warm and wet spring and summer.

    • BakedPenguin

We were discussing maple syrup last night in the chat. (I have an uncle who owns property in NH and made his own). I hope your honey is that sweet, Fourscore.

    • Suthenboy

Now that you mention it I need to get my ass in gear bee-wise

I have been very lazy this winter. Aside from cutting firewood out of the tree damage from Laura I haven’t done a thing. It is time to run the mower, rake, plant, weed etc.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

Were not quite there yet. The buttercups aren’t even out yet. In about a month or so we should be ready, but we’ll have to hit full gear, which sucks.

With any sized property above an acre or 2, there’s always work to be done.

      • Fourscore

The snow is leaving early, I hope to get in the woods in a few days with a chain saw. I don’t need much, a cord or 2 of quality stuff, oak/birch.

    • limey

Do you have to procure and install the bees yourself or do they move in by themselves if you make an attractive hive?

      • Fourscore

We buy the bees at a bee store and do our own installation. I have an equal partner younger, stronger and braver. Last year he got a kidney store the day we were picking up the bees. I did installation on 4 hives. We keep them inside the hive for a day or two, let them rest and get acquainted with their new home.

      • BakedPenguin

Still better than the murder hornet store.

      • Suthenboy

It is called a swarm trap (it is not really a trap) and I put them out every year. No guarantee you will catch a swarm so I also buy bees.

I hate to do it, but I think it’s necessary: BEES!

Neph. We are going to do a stay-cation with Viva this year. You doing the whole 4 days?

    Who broke the avatars?

    • Gender Traitor

I’m going to go out on a limb and blame a WordPress “upgrade.” Shame, too – you all are missing the great nude avatar I’m rocking right now.

        That’s always a safe bet.

      It’s probably fall-out from the mask-free breakfast/brunch/lunch I attended.

Or did we kill grandma instead?

      It’s tough to tell anymore.

    • Spudalicious

      Probably the teachers union.

      • Chafed

You can’t spell antifa without teachers union.

Now they have another excuse to keep getting paid to not work. Cooties and arsonists! Oh my!

      Those damn white supremacists!

    • Not Adahn

Malicious? Hardly. That was mostly peaceful arson for Justice and property destruction for Equity.

Speaking of physical activity, had a new experience this afternoon: Tom T & I went to see a musician friend of his – a grown-ass man (or as grown-ass as musicians get, I guess) – ride in an indoor BMX race! The track was built inside an old industrial building in the heart of Dayton, and there were many more folks there than we were expecting – folks from at least as far as suburban Cleveland. Riders of all ages, including tiny little tikes who didn’t even have pedals on their bikes – they just pushed their bikes along with their feet as if they were scooters with seats. LOTS of girls competing, though I didn’t notice too many adult women. (There may have been more than I could pick out. It’s hard to tell with those helmets.) THIS is hometown grassroots racing!

And best of all, a refreshing lack of masks! Only saw a handful the entire time we were there. I’d say 99% of those in attendance were free-faced.

    • Chafed

      How did Nephilium do?

      • Gender Traitor

After what I heard about last night’s Zoom? I’d say he was Sir Not Appearing In This Race.

      ? That sounds fun.

  22. The Hyperbole

Next time I’m drinking stingers on zoom, someone remind me to drink a lake Erie highball between each one, that or just shoot me.

    • westernsloper

      Ha!

    • zwak

Well, according to the book I am reading now, a stinger is a whore’s drink.

So, you got that going for you. Which is nice.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

This would be how the Dems intend to get back the blue-collar votes. They’re going to buy them.

What nobody is asking is what happens when there are no jobs left to pay the taxes to pay these pensions.

My glib fit update: I got off my ass in the mornings. I have to be at work at 0600 so I already get up early. I bumped it up another half hour and now get up at 0300 and get on the rowing machine. I have been doing sprints to the point of ye old chest ham flapping like it will explode. I figure I will either have a heart attack or get more fit. Either one is a win in my humble opinion. It hasn’t exploded yet so I think I am on the right track.

    • Chafed

      Great work westernsloper!

    • Tundra
