Today we mark the one year anniversary of the beginning of the torrent of “Executive Orders” from Governor Pritzker Baron Harkonnen. This saw massive restrictions on liberty – to include the infamous Executive Order #10…”With exceptions as outlined below, all individuals currently living within the State of Illinois are ordered to stay home or at their place of residence except as allowed in this Executive Order.” ORDERED.
I, foolishly, thought this rubbish would only last until the end of the month…you know, “give us two weeks to bend the curve”. Ha. I should have known better. In His last order, His Imperiousness extended his ukases through April 3rd. I am quite sure that will be extended shortly. Or rather, longly.
We have endlessly commented and highlighted the idiocy and power trips the various governments, Karens, media and grifters have been about – but what will the “end” look like? Thanks to DEG, we see what people are doing in NH to try and cut a few heads off the Hydra. But here in Illinois (“Land of Lincoln” is out…new state motto, “Will the Defendant please rise”) I see almost nothing. A few lone voices crying in the liberty wilderness, drown out by the buzzing of the obedient hivemind.
Much venom was spewed at Texas and Mississippi, of course, but I did see a few mentions that other states were starting to loosen things up…Alabama, West Virginia and Connecticut. Also Montana, North Dakota, South Carolina, and Wyoming. Some still cling to the talismasking, but are ending other useless restrictions on how many people can do what and where. Places like South Dakota and Florida had already been in a better position than the recent joiners. A semi-useful update/summary can be found here. (I say semi-useful because things like “Restrictions tighten in West Virginia” – right before describing how the governor loosened restrictions. Oy.)
I ask the Glibertariat…how long will the jackass states like Illinois and New York and California cling to squashing their citizenry, while their neighbors open back up? What reforms to the oft-abused powers will there be, if any, in your state? Will there be any looking back and realizing that most of what was done was ineffective, harmful and abusive?
Discuss, please!
As long as they can possibly get away with it, and probably six months longer.
In Colorado? None. In Alaska? Well, the most abused powers were local (Anchorage, Juneau.) Out where our new house is in the Sustina Valley, the restrictions were generally ignored.
Does a chicken have lips?
“Will there be any looking back and realizing that most of what was done was ineffective, harmful and abusive?”
That’s the big question. Look what is happening with social media, corporate media, journalism, publishing, education, etc. This massively increased push towards censorship is the worst thing that happened since a year ago.
Yup. And I bet the answer will be “no”. You know, if the entirety of human history up to this point is anything to go by.
They’ve gone too far to admit their mistakes anyway. They’d lose whatever small sliver of credibility they have left.
I didn’t mean that the perpetrators will ever admit their wrongdoing, but that others will realize it.
Lenin and Stalin come to mind.
It often takes a very bad man to uproot and displace a bad man.
Didn’t it take death to remove both of them?
I bet the answer will be “no”

Except that there are two things here that are different. Firstly, the U.S. is an exceptional country. Secondly, we are at a much higher level of technology, including communication technology. So I think there is hope. Many people here say the ratchet only goes one way, but there have been exceptions to that. Guns are one example. It’s much easier to legally carry a gun now than it was 50 years ago.
It is much easier to legally carry a gun in most places in the US now than it was 30 years ago.
When I decided to leave the US for the 2nd time (1991) FL and VT were the only places the average citizen could easily CCW legally. It was actually part of my decision process – what’s the big deal about being disarmed in Japan if I am equally disarmed when I go out the front door in the US? Particularly when it is much safer living in Japan than the US.
All that has changed now – still much, much safer in Japan but at least in the US I can legally arm myself.
“ORDERED.”
I ask the Glibertariat…how long will the jackass states like Illinois and New York and California cling to squashing their citizenry, while their neighbors open back up?
All of this will last everywhere until people stop complying. Period. End of sentence. The stats across the country do not matter to the covidreligous otherwise they would have stopped complying. It all depends on where you get your news and info.
But, but there’s a one in a billion chance you’ll be asymptomatic and accidentally kill somebody’s grandma. Do you really want to take that chance? In seriousness, some people have become so risk averse that I’m not sure this will ever end because they have no comprehension of risk and they’re always going to be terrified (assuming they’re being on the up and up about their true motivation and many are not).
The day we neglected to tell such people to lock themselves indoors if they’re so afraid was they day we let them rule over us.
This. A thousand times, this.
And another thousand times!
This. I caught a tidbit of Joe Puddin Cup rambling on about doing something.
I’m meeting 15 other couples at a bar tonight. Inside. Newsome may have a bunch of restrictions, and there are no shortage of Karens tsk-tsking, but around here it’s barely a blip on the radar.
You sir hate grandma
Grandmas bake cookies. No one hates grandmas except gluten free weirdos.
A lot of women are reaching that age. They are lonely and angry. They can vote. We’re fucked, and not in a good way.

You in CA MS?
Yes.
What parts? I grew up in Covina/West Covina
Ventura County
I grew up at Silverstrand and Hollywood beach. I lived in Port Hueneme, Ojai, downtown Oxnard And VTA avenue. All in the ’70s and early ’80s.
You must miss the 33. Wait ’til you see what I found there last week!
I went to Matilija junior high for about three months. I lived on the street that Pat’s liquor was on.
Have fun!
I was in Frisco a few weeks back and the masks were universal. On Columbus street, I was the only one not wearing one. My wife was pissed. She kept walking 30 feet back. Those people are dedicated blue team members. They’ll do whatever the party/media demand without questions or reservations. I was shocked that such a chaotic place would so completely obey such a meaningless dictate.
98% of the people here wear masks at all times including outside. When I walk down the street here with my wife and kids we clear the sidewalk like Moses parting the Red Sea. I’ve always been a person who does what I can within reason to make people comfortable. I’ve gotten rid of that part of my personality. Fuck em. If you think you are going to catch a respiratory illness by walking past someone you may as well tell me that worshipping the sun causes it to rise in the East every morning. It’s cargo cult bullshit.
For the first time in a long time I was not the only maskless person at the grocery store.
You should have dropped a duece on the street before shooting up. No one would have noticed you.
You’re meeting at the French Laundry?
I am utterly dismayed that a clear majority of the population has said “fuck the constitution, the government must protect me from my friends, neighbors, and coworkers by any means necessary.” State and local officials have said, “you asked for it, you got it.”
No. This has never been about protecting anyone. If it’s happened under Obama, none of this would have been like it is. This is the Dem’s Reichstag fire moment. This virus has provided them with everything they could have ever wanted. We knew back in March of ’20 that less than one percent of those who get it would die. I remember AIDs and it was 100% fatal. None of this shit happened. It just got hard to get laid and we had to use condoms. Nobody cowered at home and shut down the whole world’s economy. There was nothing to gain from that. Only one side gained from this. Call me an ALex Jones fan if you will, but this whole thing is a scam like no other in history.
I’ve thought the same thing, but that doesn’t explain all of the other countries locking down as well.
For example, let’s say you buy a boat and keep it in a slip in the marina. You’re the new guy and your boat is much smaller than the others. The media starts warning of a storm coming. The reports keep getting more intense. You’ve never had to worry about such a thing. You look to the other, wealthier and more experienced owners to see what they do. If they panic, there’s your clue. If the biggest and baddest boat gets hauled out and maximum protection, you’re gonna do whatever is within reach to emulate them. Once we bolted, the smaller beasts followed us right over the cliff.
The elites seizing the opportunity to wrest control from the people isn’t a phenomenon restricted to the United States? I dunno. Mass hysteria is a thing, though. We’re living through it.
Each country has its own culture and political environment so it is very difficult to come up with the one, true statement which will cover even the majority of other countries. However, I wonder how many of them saw what the US politicians were doing and thought “Hm, I’d like to get me some of that kind of power too…” And it’s too easy for them to point to the US as an example – “See, we are just trying to protect you all the same way the rich/western/modern countries are doing.”
One added dynamic is the fact that the public health officials around the globe hang in the same crowd. They’ve been war gaming this kind of outbreak for decades, formulating a plan.
Fauxchi coordinated our response with the commies.

That little toad needs to be stretching a rope, or dulling the blades on a woodchipper.
He is a political hack and a quack quack quack and always has been.
The list is long, Suthen. There needs to be a rope shortage, amongst other things
The outburst of populism around the world. It wasn’t just Trump, it was Brexit, Modi, the Yellow Jackets, AFD in Germany, and so on. And all of the technocrats, who have been the nobility around the world since WWII, jumped on the chance to smack that down.
The powers that be are certainly using every avenue possible to scare the shit out of the population to achieve political goals.
My comment was that the majority of population has swallowed it hook, line, and sinker.
I still can’t believe that the people didn’t revolt last summer.
“I still can’t believe that the people didn’t revolt last summer.”
It’s because people are so used to organizing everything on social media, and social media would not let them.
Governments the world over learned a big lesson when they saw the protests/riots/revolutions of the Arab Spring organize nearly effortlessly using Facebook and other social media tools. They weren’t going to let that mistake happen twice, at least not for movements they didn’t control/endorse.
The Reopen NH rallies were on facebook.
Despite Reopen NH having the wrong politics, facebook never pulled the events for the rallies.
They did for a equivalent KY group.
There are a lot of believers out there. The statistics are some 1/2 million died but conveniently forget the other 2 M that died from other causes. Half of my high school class decided to bail out early, before the cooties could catch them.
4 of my surviving classmates have been telling me to get vaccinated, to be safe. I’m already safe…
It’s funny to hear people tell me that I should be clamoring to get my kids vaccinated to keep them safe.
Erm, they’re more likely to die in the parking lot on the way to getting the vaccine while being struck by lightning and winning the lottery simultaneously than from covid.
Some or all of the vaccines have not been tested on children. They should not receive the vaccine at all until those tests are complete.
I don’t doubt that bringing such info to the awareness of these people would result in a “oh… well, still, you should be doing more to keep your kids safe during these trying times.”
Don’t confuse them with the facts.
These vaccines were barely tested on adults. Leaving that aside, the odds of me needing it are so low, it makes no sense to me to try out some brand new drug to avoid a ridiculously small chance of getting a disease that 99.5% of people survive anyway. I happily deny the science on this. Happily.
Thanks for the shout-out. I’m not one of the folks doing the heavy lifting here in NH. I just help out.
How long will the jackass states squish their citizens? As long as they can get away with it.
I am part of some groups related to reopening PA and NC. I see a lot of defiance in Pennsylvania. In fact, I have an ever growing list of businesses that I need to patronize when I’m next visiting my friends and family in Pennsylvania. I hear about some defiance in NC, but my impression is that there is more defiance in PA.
I don’t believe Whitmer will stop until her term ends and hopefully she is voted out. I would dearly love to see her pay for her overreach but I don’t have much hope of it.
In any event, we are heading to Hilton Head island for spring break. Hoping for some semblance of normalcy.
Here in Japan, well, the Tokyo metro area we are in an extended state of emergency – which means restaurants/bars are requested to (will get financial compensation for complying with the following) stop serving alcohol after 7:00 PM and stop serving food after 8:00 PM. This was declared in January and supposed to end a coupe weeks back – despite the fact that the infection rate has been declining precipitously.
Masking is, and will continue to be the norm for the foreseeable future. Most probably through the end of this year. (Some gov’t bureaucrat on the TV was saying it will go on for five years but I doubt many people will put up with that idea)
However, from anecdotal word I have heard through a few younger co-workers, a lot of younger people are done with this crap and are doing the traditional blossom viewing parties in local parks in big groups. I hear that the larger parks are crammed full of groups – they bring out blue plastic tarps, food and drink, and spend hours hanging out (this was the norm in the before times here). I think they gave it a year and are done with going through a life not lived.
You can expect that in every other aspect of their lives they will be masked up and following the rules – particularly as they cannot control what the shops do. But on their own time, well, spring is coming on and at least some significant number of people are willing to take the risk.
I hope the hanami start again.
Are the host and hostess clubs officially still shut down? From my friends I heard that they seemed to be the only really meaningful way young people were getting infected. Not dying, just getting infected mind you…
I can’t say much beyond my cursory observations but for the hostess clubs and massage places near the train stations which I commute through – those places don’t seem to have changed their hours.
Currently with the lockdown the majority of the Japanese people I’m speaking with are women so it’s generally not a topic of conversation!
So what you’re saying is that you are no longer in touch with any hostesses during their off hours…
I’ve never actually been to a hostess club. I’ve kind of wanted to do so just for the experience and only truly for the conversation.
OTH – I have been at an event with a maiko in Kyoto… It was interesting to say the least.
I have. Very, very uncomfortable for me.
I went to a few hostess clubs when I first got to Okinawa – but those were specifically for GI’s so really not what you would find in the Tokyo area. But even then the feeling was off, not something I was/am interested in.
I understand. If I couldn’t speak Japanese I wouldn’t have an any interest.
I’m kind of curious what their “patter” goes like. I’ve seen it fictionalized and documentaries, but for the documentaries they know they are being filmed.
“I’m kind of curious what their “patter” goes like. ”
I’m pretty sure that depends on the level of the establishment – which would be reflected in the prices. Basically, it would be pretty similar to what the average Japanese girl says/does to get a guy’s attention in any social interaction.
The higher the level/cost, the better they are at being interesting.
One rule of thumb to figure the level of a hostess club in Ginza – the lower level clubs (still expensive by US standards) have the name of the establishment in Romaji (Roman alphabet). Medium range places have names in Kana. Higher end places have names in Kanji.
Very few here pay any attention to the illegal ‘orders’.
I went to the grocery this morning and not one single person was wearing a mask.
Masking here in my part of Phoenix remains a rounding error from 100% in all stores. Roughly 50% outside.
We have to wear them in stores. The store gets fined if we don’t. Outside, it’s maybe 60/40 wearing them/not.
It’s the same trick as tax withholding. Force the companies to do the shitty stuff. Take credit for the good stuff.
I can assure you this is strictly on topic for the post – the Alexandria, Virginia government has cancelled a conference of conservative and libertarian journalists (apparently a Reason editor(s) will be among the attendees.
The reason assigned for the cancellation is the virus.
“Wolfe said he does not know who complained, but the group has learned its lesson from the experience, noting that posting the name of the hotel for their events on their website is likely a thing of the past.
““In the past it’s been a useful detail,” he said. “Today, I guess it’s something that can get your event canceled.””
https://www.thecollegefix.com/conservative-student-journalism-conference-canceled-after-one-anonymous-complaint/
Given the wording of the first amendment I was under the impression that the Alexandria, Virginia government was forbidden to cancel any gathering.
Huh. You learn something new every day.
They should just gather and tell the government to fuck off.
The Constitution was written 100 years ago in a language no one understands.
They have no balls. I am a bit surprised they drifted towards the evil party instead of the spineless party.
It’s not surprising to me at all. The flag always flaps with the breeze. If the mainstream current was in the direction of gassing the jews, they’d be writing articles about how to make libertarian inroads with the anti-semites.
I am the nicest guy you will ever meet until….
They have no fight in them. If I ever meet a Reason writer I am going to spit on their shoes.
Fucking cowards.
Judging by the article, I’m not sure it was the Reason people *running* the conference, there would simply be one or more Reason people available to talk to the would-be student journalists.
Also, going back to earlier remarks, the Hilton Hotel was told by the govt not to host the conference – they were the designated baddies – so it would be invading the Hilton to hold the conference there.
Always have to set up an intermediary. Can’t have the peasants getting up in arms and storming the castle.
This is just the tip of a very large iceberg.
Yeah, it was “the Intercollegiate Studies Institute’s Collegiate Network student editors’ conference” and the govt put the screws on the Hilton where the event was scheduled. So I don’t think the Hilton gave the ISI the option of holding the event, I think they cancelled it.
Wherever the *do* end up meeting, “[t]he conference will include professional news editors from publications such as The Federalist, Daily Caller, Washington Examiner, Reason and others. They share their tips and experiences with the student journalists.”
I wonder if the Reason site (if I may utter the name) will mention this story and say who will be representing their magazine. Suave is the one who has been doing the outreach to the youth lately, but who knows.
Dudes, do you even dissident? Lesson learned.
Given that they have reached the recall petition threshold for Newsom, California should open up any day now.
He’s dancing as fast as he can.
*That’s* entertainment.
It does seem to have accelerated reopening.
The government keeps outsourcing it’s enforcement to Karens and businesses. IIRC businesses can be held liable if people catch the rona in their establishment if they are known to not enforce masks and distancing (even though it’s impossible to prove where an infection came from). Depending on the local population, I can see these “soft” mandates outliving the official ones. I’m in massachusetts and I can guarantee that businesses (and my employer…sigh) will require masks long after our squishy republican governor lets up.
IIRC businesses can be held liable if people catch the rona in their establishment if they are known to not enforce masks and distancing
Many of the bits of legislation from across the country that I’ve seen the waive COVID liability for businesses only do so if the businesses comply with public health directives (masks, distancing, etc.).
I’m certain some places have passed these laws.
The prog-fascists have been putting the mechanisms in place for decades to do this kind of thing. Can’t get what you want through the legislative process? Fine, just do it indirectly by pressuring businesses through your non-profit front groups, regulatory bureaucracy, and in-the-pocket judiciary. Textbook fascism.
I visited six grocery stores today around Boston. Every single time I had to deal with the customer service desk. Only once I was asked to put on a face mask. That’s better than I expected.
I did 5 yesterday, 3 big stores and a restaurant and another. Mrs F and I were maskless and nary a word was said. Some of the few other maskless smiled at us.
The total number of people (outside of my household) I’ve seen without a mask in a grocery store in Massachusetts since the end of April is 2 (two). One guy in September and one guy in November. I do grocery shopping in person all the time.
NH is a little freer but you have to run in the right circles.
I am usually, but not always, the only person at the grocery store without a mask.
That’s encouraging. I live a bit further west in a place that is a little more conservative, at least by MA standards. I work in a grocery store and we do have a health exemption policy regarding masks, so I use that anytime a Karen tattles on some other custie that isn’t wearing a mask.
anytime a Karen tattles
You have more patience than I would. “We don’t need neerdowells like you shitting up the ambiance in our store. Take a hike, Hitler youth!”
We seldom get anyone in the office, but a client comes in to pick up a small pump (we seldom have any inventory). Working-class tech from Arkansas, I had never met him; we introduce ourselves and shake hands heartily. This stranger is comfortable in his skin, and my day was better just to enjoy getting to know someone who got out of bed this morning and wanted to earn his way. It did occur to me that there was some infinitesimal risk to taking his hand, but it was so normal and good for my blood pressure.
Barnaby has left the building.
Goodbye, sweet boy.
So sorry to hear that.
Sorry zwak.
you have my condolences.
Sorry
Sorry zwak.
:’-(
Bummer. Poor dog.
🙁
Awwwwww.
Thank you, everyone. He was only with the wife and me for a little over five years, but he had a rough life before that. We adopted him from the SPCA and he had come from a hoarding situation. He always had health challenges, the worst of which was an issue with a hyper para=thyroid gland. That caused a lot of pain and wasn’t an easy surgery, but we just wanted the best for the 15-pound fuzzball. He was rambunctious, loud, demanding, and always a little boy. He would eat everything, including random mushrooms from the yard, which got him a meal of charcoal one night.
I have never come across a dog with more personality. He will be missed. But the vet did let us be with him in his last moments, despite Covid.
So sorry, zwak. Barnaby sounds like a great pup.
I’m looking at my Kiki right now. 11 in May, but she’s been with us for only four months. She’s been through the wringer, too. Kidney disease, Lyme and severe dental issues, but I don’t care.
Good on you and Mrs. zwak for making sure that boy didn’t die alone on a goddamn concrete floor.
You guys are great.
I’m so sorry, Zwak. I’m glad you were able to be with him in his final moments here.
That sucks, zwak – we lost our just about a year ago, and it still stings. Dogs provide unconditional love, which makes their passing that much harder.
Sorry Zwak. It’s always difficult to lose a furry member of the family.
Accidently posted to the dead thread discussion about old big bore rifles.
—————————————————————–
This is a fun Montana movie from the Livingston area that hit the theaters in 1975.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LKoOzAb4Bs
The link should start around 56:25 and be germane to this discussion.
The link is for the entire movie, Slim Pickens, Jeff Bridges second real role, and see if you can recognize the others.
I lived “Montana near” the area for three years and visited often. Ahhh I missing the area.
Big bores…I count 338 Winchester, from there up 375 H&H, 375 Winchester, 44 mag, 444 Marlin, 450 Marlin, 458 Winchester Mag.
Easily the favorite is the .375 Winchester.
Also, a big Slim Pickens fan. He was a bit of a gunsmith and made rifles. What I wouldn’t do to have one.
“Montana near”
Havre?
LOL. No, I was a neighbor from the Bozeman area.
That’s a great movie suggestion. I believe I missed watching that film the first time when it came out and somehow have not corrected that yet. Bookmarked for tonight.
My kid watched Rainbow’s Stargazer completely yesterday when I posted it. He got all excited and ran to his guitar and started banging away. He said the song gave him Ideas. Then, Just now, He asked me to show him again. After, we watched Heaven and Hell, Die young, and some UFO stuff. Turns out he loves DIO. Without any prompting from me other than just playing it around him.
You’re a good dad.
Jeez, I was thinking the same thing and now feel amiss to have skipped the chance to mention it. It’s great that you are feeding your son’s creative energies.
You and your son may enjoy listening to Eddie Trunk’s radio show. It’s out of New York on Friday nights but you can stream it from 8-11 PM PT. Dio and UFO are very much in his wheelhouse.
“The Mob Rules” would be appropriate for the times.
Loving Duo is a sign of intelligence.
Jesus is it ever.
20% humidity in NYC tonight. I think that’s the lowest I’ve ever seen. Sleep should be lovely tonight.
Past two days have been wonderful. At least weatherwise…
Just make sure to keep yourself hydrated. That’s pretty dry air. A glass of water before bed will help avoid a dry mouth and sinuses.
Currently 21% RH in my shop. The house gets there frequently in the winter too. Even drinking 500ml of water right before bed, I wake up feeling like I just camped in the desert.
When I go hunting out west, I have a 5 or so minute routine every morning to get the massive boogers out of my nose to be able to breathe.
I’m “hydrating”, of sorts.
Nephilium FTW.
We had a boil water warning for a few days, so I kept maybe four gallons boiled on the stove all the time. It was pretty nice in the house.
Just make sure to not touch a doorknob or the fridge.
I’m over-reacting, but it feels like the walls are closing in.
The local online paper closed their comments (Disqus). It’s their site, they have their reasons (all bad), but I hate that there’s no longer a place to call out bad reporting, bad logic, and the bad government they’re reporting on.
It’s a control thing: they can’t stand that a full half of their subscribers don’t buy their logic and don’t play nice. This will pass; I hated most of their coverage almost as much as their subjects, but I did like the virtual business . . . and their striking out in business to earn their way. I was pulling for them in principle, and they had picked up my favorite reporter in town, a fabulously impartial and knowledgeable coverer of local politics and government.
The machine wins. I cancelled my subscription, but spewing their drool gets easier. I’m not going to start my own site, so I guess I’ll just card out today’s ATL @ MIN spring game and get over it. Oh well
Sorry Don. I was at the gas station and they ran out just as mine started. I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard about that outside of panic buys in advance of a disaster or immediately afterwards. Not any mom and pop station either, it was Kroger. Between that and things going sideways at work, it feels like the wheels are coming off the bus. I’m getting closer to punching out.
On a happy hour call with coworkers last night some of them expressed surprise that there were people in the park without masks. I told them it was retarded to think that you need a mask outdoors. They somehow think I’m indispensable so I can get away with saying that. I guess their foolishness isn’t all bad.
New York’s diktat specifically “requires” a mask only if you are not “social distancing” with someone for more than fifteen minutes. It’s mystifying to me that those who have chosen to interpret that as “mask at all times and in all places or die” have basically taken control of society.
I’m one of the few people I’ve seen who walk in the parking lot with my mask in hand. Like, what do people think the mask is doing, when they’re walking alone outside? It just… it boggles my mind.
I am still amazed that there are people who drive their cars while masked.
I try to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they are between errands and don’t want to handle their mask. I’m probably wrong, but I try to be magnanimous.
Fcuk ’em. I generally believe that many people like that are probably so physically repulsive that they are doing us all a favor.
Lol. Comments like that are what keep me coming back.
Young people running around the golf course in a mask.
Young. Not obviously asthmatic. Obviously not obese. Fit as a fiddle, the kids say.
But maybe that’s the point, it’s not about health, it’s about signaling, and you’re not signaling to anyone in particular, you’re signaling to society in general, because we live in a panopticon of zealously observant, infinitely suspicious wannabe NKVD agents, so you wear the mask when you run. So maybe that’s what fit, unassailable twenty-somethings are thinking when they put on their stupid fucking masks to go jogging.
Wonko the Sane had the right idea.
Mrs. MW and I were walking in the park a couple of days ago. The walking path goes around what I suspect to be somewhere between about 25-40 acres of land. There were 2 others on the path, and 1 person sitting under a tree about 100’ inside the path. So a grand total of 5 people on a piece of land 25-40 acres large.
And one of the walkers on the path not only was wearing a mask the entire time, but gave us at least a 20’ berth when we’d pass each other every 10 minutes or so.
It was all I could do to not choke her.
The fact that it’s been a year and there’s no consistent pattern of mask mandates improving the situation should be a clue that it’s bullshit.
And everyone keeps citing studies to me involving N95 or surgical masks, but as far as I know there are no studies on public health outcomes as they relate to wearing an ill-fitting square of T-shirt material over your face.
Stop it. You talk like a scientist. The lockdown crowd only listens to SCIENTISTS! You are testing a hypothesis (and finding it wanting.) They crave studies that support the narrative (and allow them to stay home.)
Everyone craves studies that supports their own chosen narrative. Everyone.
Agreed. But there are those of us that can be persuaded by quality evidence even if it contradicts our beliefs.
Who is that in your new avatar?
Same as always. The late great Maurice Colbourne.
I didn’t recognize him. He looks quite different, to me, compared to the photo from Doctor Who.
Holy crap! “I” have a kickstarter I didn’t know about.

Congratulations?
We just have to be thankful to all our great leaders for saving us and especially now that Chiney Jo has restored our democracy.
I heard his address on the radio. I was shocked by the amount of obedience he sought and seems to think he will get. He is delusional. Blue strongholds appear to have relatively compliant populations. Everywhere else, it’s over. People are just done and they are not going back to the way things were.
I head over to north Idaho just about every weekend for snowmobiling. It is refreshing. Minimal masks. I make it a point to eat in a local restaurant. Not even staff are wearing them.
Unfortunately the I5 corridor is moving over there and rapidly driving up real estate.
Never change Portland.

And here we go:
GRAB THEM GUNS!
Has nothing to do with safety, it’s about arresting more young black men, making them felons and taking their guns. For their own good you know.
Back from hockey. (Ice on both knees, because I’m old.) Group tonight was 30 guys. Everyone dutifully wore their masks into the rink and while they got ready. Before warm-ups were done, all masks were down and stayed that way for 90 minutes. Conversation on the ice and on the bench was lively and normal. The age range was 19 to over 60.
These guys give me some small amount of hope.
Nice. What time did you start playing? Isn’t after 1 AM in Minnesoda?
We go on the ice at 9:45. Done at 11:15. Bullshitting in the parking lot takes some time, so I usually get home after midnight.
And yes, now it’s almost 2.
You guys stay up late for a bunch of farmers. 😉
Ice time is always in high demand. You go on when you can get ice.
And it’s farmers and miners, motherfucker!
I was at a Honky Tonk in North Dallas last night, at least 400 people with a live band. I saw maybe 10 masks and those were mostly servers.

I hope he finds what he’s looking for.
*sniffles*
Man, that is sad. So much gone so quickly. I remember seeing aerial footage of a car trying to outrun the wave, speeding down the road with an unknown number of occupants.
It was clear that the wave was going to overtake the car.
I had to switch off the TV. It was like the jumpers on Sept 11. I knew that turning off the TV didn’t prevent their suffering, but I couldn’t cope with searing the images into my brain.
I remember in the aftermath, one of the videos shown on TV was a man on a bridge over a swollen river with debris (maybe 5 or 6 feet below the underside of the bridge) from the Tsunami floating down to the ocean. In the debris was a car and on top of the car was a guy, standing up, looking for way off. The guy on the bridge lowered something (pole? rope? I don’t remember) and the guy on the floating car grabbed it and was saved. Pure luck.
I can only imagine how many thousands of people weren’t able to get out of their cars or were just washed out to sea on whatever flotsam they had grabbed on to keep from drowning. All in the space of about 30 minutes.
If I lost Judi I would be literally helpless. Not quadruple amputee helpless, but pretty close. She does all the finances, buys the food and makes the household run. She’s also my only real-life friend in the world. The fish tanks! What the fuck do I do with the fish tanks?
My goodness that is sad.
Threading fail. That was meant for you GL.
It’s Friday night, so that means another trip to the ER for the Mr.
This time the issue was searing pain in his right arm. He gave it a 10 on the pain scale. I said “Really? The worst pain you’ve ever felt? Worse than kidney stones?”
He did back down to 8 at that. But I know his much he hates going to the ER so I figure it must be seriously painful if it’s enough to make him want to go.
I’m now back home in bed, but I seriously doubt I’ll be sleeping.
Audiobook it is…
I will keep him in my evening prayers. Hopefully they will be able to figure it out and fix it this time.
Sorry to hear HS. I was typing and didn’t know. Buy that Man a recumbent bike or a rowing machine and get yourself a set of kettle drums.
Kidding aside, I hope that you and he weather this latest storm of bullshit.
So sorry you’re having another “adventure.” Was he admitted?
Sorry to hear that. Some rollercoasters you can’t get off of. Remember, it’s your life. Not his.
Mornin’ Glibbies! My new trainee (mentioned yesterday) turned out to be less than “painfully shy”. I barely got a word in edgewise. She’s stoked for the extra hours but I’m not sure that she’s physically up to the task. My last back-up had shoulders like Riven and a bum to match (Sorry, Riven). This one is enthusiastic but will probably wash out pretty quickly. Cool girl though, all things considered. Have I mentioned lately how much I hate these mask mandates? How the hell are you supposed to teach skills when every query and answer sounds like the Teacher from Peanuts? I wonder how many people that we’ve met since November will never recognize each other at the grocery store.
Mornin,’ Son,
Now throw in old ears that don’t hear (or listen) so well. I’m constantly saying, “‘I didn’t understand a word you said” Most often they pull the mask down, sometimes probably swear louder at me. Sometimes I want to say “I liked you better with the mask on”
I tease the kid at the local grocery store, he wears a bandana, I call him “Jesse James” but he probably doesn’t know the story. I’ve not worn a mask in Podunkville but again there aren’t many people or many places to go.
Good that you have a new trainee, always go with the cute ones, if you have to work, may as well have some better surroundings. Good luck with your new trainee but the talkers are the worst, they feel they have a need to keep you informed way too much.
This dog’s hunting is done but he still likes to watch the pheasants on the wide-screen. Seemed a really nice girl and I promise not to “Cuomo” her. Did have to tap her on the shoulder once to get out of the way of a forklift and nobody cried “Rapist!” so it’s all good. 🙂
G’ monrin Festus, 4score.
How long will the jackass states like Illinois and New York and California cling to squashing their citizenry, while their neighbors open back up?
As long as they can until there is some watershed moment. Remember, IT’S SCIENCE!!!! That and the elite are LOVING this lock down.
What reforms to the oft-abused powers will there be, if any, in your state?
None. Cuomo got caught red handed killing off grandparents by the thousands all so he didn’t have to look like he was accepting federal aid from the D. What was done to him? Notta!
Will there be any looking back and realizing that most of what was done was ineffective, harmful and abusive?
Yes. But it’ll all be fortified away by the ‘We had to do something! We didn’t know!’ crowd. It’s the same crowd who got to hang out at home and collect checks the whole time.
Yep. Government workers cheered the lock-downs while the rest of us schlubs kept at it. They gave zero fucks about custodians, retail clerks, truckers or basically anyone that needs to get their hands dirty on a regular basis. This was a defining moment in Western History. The class divide is real and the chasm is growing.

At least some in Ohio are trying to fight the good fight against DeRINO.
That’s great! I’ve seen very little push-back up here even in the deeply Tory corner of the Province. “You Canadians! You’ve got no balls!”
Thanks for the write up Swiss. I’ve unfortunately had to deal with both Indiana and Illinois restrictions. For a long time, even now (haven’t checked lately), I wasn’t supposed to go to Chicago without a 2 week self quarantine. Most people I know just minimally comply. But I do think vaccines are making a difference. Mom and Dad (both named Karen now) got theirs and they’ve already booked a flight to Florida to see my sister. People seem to think vaccines will make them invincible, which might not be true, but at least they’ll quickly lose patience with restrictions.
