Spuds got bounced from the Euro JV tournament. ManUre and Arsenal are still in. And we started the NCAA basketball tournament yesterday with some entertaining games. But I bet Michigan State losing to UCLA (by spectacularly choking) won’t be the main story of the late game. The media will see to that. I’m not sure who Andy Nesbitt is, but he sounds like he’s never played team sports while an adult. Anyway, even money says Izzo gets more questions about that than the game. And I bet every single player they ask about it says it’s no big deal. But journalists gonna journalism.
Big birthdays today were English separatist William Bradford, Scottish explorer David Livingstone, English explorer Richard Francis Burton, Wild West lawman Wyatt Earp, big talker William Jennings Bryan, Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren, Nazi architect (and supposedly a distant relative) Albert Speer, holocaust organizer (and human filth) Adolf Eichmann, commie wife Jiang Qing, baseball HOFer Richie Ashburn, the lovely Ursula Andress, actress Glenn Close, convicted sex offender and Clinton pal Harvey Weinstein, Die Hard actor Bruce Willis, MLB great Ivan Calderon, hockey legend (who I saw hold the cup live once, bringing me to tears) Vladi Konstantinov, swimsuit model Vida Guerra, and my awesome father.
That’s a heavy list. Too many nazis for my taste (one is bad enough, but two?). Anyway, on to…the links!
I remember when my children all gave up their blankies. This is the same energy right here.
Blinken blinked. Also, same energy as a toddler when they are faced with adversity.
So who is gonna be the next Vice-President? Lol, I’m just kidding. Hell, super cop Kamala is probably the one behind this insanity.
But cancel culture isn’t real! Look, I don’t really care about this because Teen Vogue is commie trash. But I do find the irony ironic.
I hope this isn’t the thing that takes Cuomo down. First off, because it’s hilarious. And second, you know, because his decisions led to tons of deaths and he needs to be held accountable for that.
This is confusing to me. Mainly because I assumed DC Comics characters were the gay ones.
Gee what will it look like? Maybe like schools across the country that have been open since August without incident? Nah, they’ll somehow make it less inviting or educational. This is Chicago Public Schools, after all.
You should be happy about this, San Francisco. All those businesses who have suffered might actually have half a chance now. Until you tax them to death, anyway.
Good, they should have. Unless they were the cops holding the doors open for people who were there to petition their government for a redress of grievances. Those guys do deserve a medal.
Gonna finish the week off with a bang. Man, what a great song. Enjoy it.
Now get out there and be productive (or sit and watch basketball all day), dear friends. And have a great weekend!
I notice you say “until” and not “unless.” I mean, this is loony San Francisco, after all.
I try to keep things factual, not live in a fantasy world.
When your idea of running things is mega corps in collusion with corruptocrats, then small businesses are just fucking nuisances.

They’re both right!
That’s how you make the democrats really, really mad at you: you expose them for being just as, if not more, corrupt than you are..
I expect Putin has more accurate information about what’s going on with Biden than the American people do. That last paragraph would explain the green screen video. He’s either incapacitated or it’s a trial run to see if they can make it fly because he’s close.
Yeah, my suspicions are the same.
I’m getting similar feelings with Putin as I had with Trump. Don’t particularly like the guy, but he sure knows how to make the right people squirm.
Putin is like a competent version of Trump, which isn’t exactly good for the rest of the world or freedom within Russia.
He is a distasteful thug. On the other hand, he seems to genuinely care about his country and it’s people – the opposite of everyone in the Biden Administration.
“…and it’s people”
I mean, unless they are investigative journalists, dissidents, people who don’t want to have their sons conscripted to attack Georgia and Ukraine, people who don’t want a Ruler For Life looting their country on behalf of himself and his cronies, want free expression, want to not be subject to blasphemy laws from the Orthodox church, etc, etc, ad nauseum.
Now, now, Putin cares that his people keep his kleptocracy propped up. That’s caring too – and not all that different from what our ruling class expects of us.
Different than here how? Different orthodoxy you can’t cross and we attack with a volunteer army.
Most likely you’re correct. How fucked is it that’s the case?
I wasnt around yesterday, i know about the green screen story—what was the consensus here? Is it conspiracy or did they really fake him answering a question?
Both.
I saw stuff that’s hard to explain away as an optical illusion. Whether that means green screen or not, I dunno.
One of our sons-in-law is an amateur movie critic and special-effects geek. I showed him that video, and he said it was one of the worst shop-jobs he had ever seen.
I know, that opinion is worth every penny you paid for it, but I know the guy, and I think he’s got a pretty good handle on this kind of stuff. I’ve sat in front of too many movies with him and listened to him deconstruct special effects frame-by-frame.
There are multiple videos at different angles and plenty of AP photos and people who were there saying ‘I was there it’s not fake’. I guess it could all be faked but I’m not that far up conspiracy road quite yet.
The thing that really gets me about the conspiracy is it’s such a low value fake. Why the hell would you fake that interaction?
That said, the original video does look shopped to me. Maybe it’s just artifacts of compression. *shrugs* Doesn’t really matter anyway, it’s not like “Biden’s staff faked a video because Biden is so far gone” gets us anywhere better than President Harris and Vice President Warren.
Right. It makes zero sense to fake this unless you’re trying to provoke some weird reaction or misdirect away from something else. Someone’s just having fun here. There is something wrong with the video, but it’s probably not a coverup–if it were, it’d be a really incompetent one.
I actually had a thought (I know, right!) about that succession. If Biden needs to be removed for being senile, or something like that, it is best if Republicans don’t touch it.
Until Harris is installed. At that point, the R’s need to come out swinging with a “concerned” campaign to find out what happened. And then let that campaign led to a Harris impeachment. And it doesn’t matter if the impeachment fails (it will) but that Republicans are concerned that people close to Biden knew, and in knowing put the country at risk for political gain. All the while riding that to strength for the party.
Could be a good strategy, but they are the stupid party.
zwak– I agree. The Republicans can only fuck it up by trying to make a deal about it. It’ll happen no matter what they do, so better to stand back and let the Dems step in it badly, and then see how to react. Inserting themselves into this will only make the main headline news “Republicans sieze on Biden controversy” or the like.
I haven’t seen anything from people who were there or the actual filmers themselves – link plz!

So what is the explanation for the weird transparency of the fuzzy microphone at the 11-12s mark? I looked at it over and over it isn’t right, because if his hand is in front of the mic the perspective is all wrong and he should have hit it, and if it’s not in front of the mic you shouldn’t see it through the mic. I’m guessing it’s not entirely a fake but they may have done a sloppy editing job to excise a Biden gaffe or stumble or something.
The ‘dead cat’ is bigger than you think and they are right up against Joe, in the bit where his hand goes over the black one he actually bumps it they are that close.
Meant to link to this video explaining it.
It is a very obvious fake. What I dont understand is why.
There’s somewhere below zero chance that Biden meets Putin face to face.
It would prove to be disastrously embarrassing for the Biden admin.
I can’t find a link to the image of just the painting, but I’d love to see an interpretation of this with Putin and Biden: https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-painting-by-russian-artist-vera-donskaya-khilko-named-wrestling-where-42969731.html
Yeah, the most unbelievable part of that movie was that someone would cheat on Anne Archer with her.
Just like the least believable part of The Natural is that Roy Hobbs would get involved with a trannie.

She’s a HARDCORE Scientologist. Her son was their spokeshole for a number of years.
I’ve been watching Leah Remini’s documentary series on Scientology. Crazy ass shit there.
I also recommend Alex Gibney’s HBO movie “Going Clear”. Spanky Taylor’s story is outrageous.
The amount of makeup she’s wearing in that series is staggering.

Gonna finish the week off with a bang.
Finishing off the week with a bang on the door
I can’t hear you.
I was expecting something from Dave Edmunds.
I haz disappoint.
Does he have a gong?
I love every single thing about that video.
I’d love to hear the actual audio track of that session. Because I’m willing to bet it’s completely fucked up.
Fun fact- when Screamin’ Jay Hawkins recorded “I Put A Spell On You”, he was snot-slinging, toilet-hugging, drunk. Most of the screaming and ad-libs were because he couldnt remember the words.
See also: Iron Butterfly. Innagadadavida was originally “In the Garden of Eden”, but that Ingle guy was so fucked-up he slurred the words.

Ha! I was thinking along exactly the same lines, but couldn’t formulate it as wittily as you did.
Something a little more angsty but with cool animation.
I read “Inside the Third Reich” by Speer when I was a little kid. Also read “The Arms of Krupp”. I was a weird kid. Parents joined a book club so there were many that would just show up monthly aside from what we drew from the library.
I’ve read the Speer book a couple times. It’s an excellent read. He captured the collective sociopathy quite well.
Yes indeedy do!
I too read these but couldn’t believe smart people would go along. Now I see it first hand and it makes sense. These aren’t smart people: we are told they are because of their credentials, but they are fucking stupid morons.
Speer was a very canny operator. He saw his opportunity immediately after the war to become “the good Nazi” and played the role to the hilt, managing to sanitize his own participation in the death machine.
Fritz Sauckel was hanged while Speer was not. Sauckel provided the slave labor, Speer used the slave labor. Never made much sense if you think about it.
I guess I need to get Speer’s book. I have read ‘The Arms of Krupp’.
I also got some real good nuggets of WTF from “The rise and fall of the Third Reich” by William L. Shirer…
Just (depending on the edition) be careful about how obvious it is on the shelf behind you if you’re doing a video call…
The visual I’m talking about (and have seen on a call) is that it’s a great big black book with a bright red band across the spine, and the black/white swastika right there on the band.
I was like “I know you’re a super history geek, but still…”
This might turn some heads.
I did a book report in 7th grade on Shirer’s companion piece, “The Rise and Fall of You Know Who Else Had a Book Written about Him?”
That would probably get you kicked out of school nowadays.
You can’t hold a kid with “The Arms of Krupp”.

Hostile takeover?
They should just merge and get it over with. We’re down to what, 7 major media companies now? Let’s do away with the illusion of choice. No one needs more than 2 (fake) choices of anything. Except genders of course, we need lots of those. And people who are oppressed, need more of those too.
I can’t wait until they go after biology and demand we stop just having XX and XY chromosomes as defining gender…. SCIENCE IT UP, MAN!

I’ve already corrected it after Banjos said I’d cause much reeeeeing with the DC/Marvel thing. Even though DC is pretty gay.

The teacher’s unions are just slow walking all this “careful reopening” crap all over Northern Illinois. They will drag it out so they don’t really have to work the rest of this semester. I think they know in the Fall they will have to go back to actually going to a classroom. I have to laugh at the fate of the next few tax increase referenda around here…used to be you could just chant “Do it for the Children!” “The Children are Our Future!” and *bang* up go the property taxes. Now… probably not for a couple of years.
Yeah, it’s basically set in stone. If the unions don’t get their way it’s gonna be the Rapture.
It’s also rage-inducing how the media swallowed the “reopen safely” propaganda hook, line, and sinker.
Yep. Especially with all the evidence available from schools that have been open for several months without an outbreak of any kind.
The private schools around here are laughing all the way to full enrollment.

I go to private school by the way

The tax increase will pass. One passed here, for the chillens, last fall when people were bitching about schools being closed.
Not here – we just passed the FOR TEH CHILDREN in 2019. The district here will have to lay low for a while. Lots of angry two earner households.
I’ve been running around trying to find what has been causing my new disks to sound like they’re constantly writing.
It’s linux. an annoying little process ‘ext4lazyinit’ because someone too bright for their own good realized that building a multiterabyte filesystem takes a long time, so they switched it to run mostly in the background, without any indication to that effect.
It’s still annoying, but I have to accept that for several days this process will be creating inodes for empty space.
If you lubricate the discs with silicon spray, that should help.
Go on…
Axle grease works wonders
I just submerge the whole computer in mineral oil.
That would be just Cray-Cray…
Is that what STEVE SMITH does?
STEVE SMITH NOT USE SLIPPERY STUFF! STEVE SMITH GO RAW!
Afterwards, you have to wipe it with a cloth.
If it was an option, you should have used btrfs. Ext4 is a dead end. Even the maintainer says it was a patch to bridge until the next generation filesystems were available.
The very phrase “next generation filesystem” makes me distrust it.
“new” in and of itself is not enough to convince me that something is needed. What does it actually provide that isn’t available in proven systems?
There are two types of fools* in this world: those that say “This is old, and therefore good,” and those that say “This is new, and therefore better.”
I lean a bit toward being the first kind.
*note: there are a lot more than two types of fools in this world, this is just n aphorism I saw somewhere.
I’m still looking for an opportunity to use a dialog snippet I came up with years ago.
Character 1: “They don’t make them like they used to.”
Character 2: “And it’s a good thing too.”
There are two types of fools* in this world: those that say “This is old, and therefore good,” and those that say “This is new, and therefore better.”
[thinks about G.K. Chesterton’s fence]
Yes, I’ve always thought of that as a distillation of Chet’s Fence.
Ext4 was released in 2008. ZFS in 2006. Btrfs in 2009. Btrfs is now in the kernel. ZFS is still outside due to licensing conflicts. Btrfs and ZFS are stable.
The most significant improvement is block checksums for bitrot protection with self-healing.
Copy-on-write protects against RAID “write hole” on power failure.
Snapshots are supported which allow you to have hot backups on the filesystem. It keeps block-level changes while retaining the original. If something gets corrupted, it can roll back to that version. It is also usable in union mounting to seed a filesystem.
If you backup btrfs to another btfrs system it can be done by transferring only the changed blocks instead of changed files.
All too newfangled.
Within my use case, there’s no benefit. Backups are to an NTFS drive on another system. Snapshots are not needed.
As an aside, despite Sun’s promises, ZFS still doesn’t dynamically release resources it has glommed on to and we still need to explicitly limit it so the applications can use the box. There is no way it need to grab half a terabyte of RAM and crowd out the actual purpose of the box. Why haven’t they fixed it yet?
Because stealing all available system memory for their cache gives good iozone numbers? 😉
Oracle always believes they are the only reason you have hardware.
Hey UCS, have you posted your hardware specs yet? A NAS has been sitting on my to-do list for a year and a half and I’m curious as to your hardware choices.
It’s an old linux box with an onboard raid controller. of the six sata ports, one still holds a DVD drive, one has a 60gb SSD that has the root filesystem and boot image. The remaining four connect to the mass storage disks.
I don’t know the CPU, but it was cheap when I got it and that was years ago. It had 4 gb of memory, but I stuffed 16 in there because the DDR3 sticks from my pre-upgrade gaming rig’s motherboard were still perfectly good and fit.
/proc/cpuinfo says it’s an Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4130 CPU @ 3.40GHz
I’m tempted to go the same direction. I have an old desktop sitting in the closet that could be repurposed. I’ve never set up RAID before and have mismatching disks, but it appears to be a substantially cheaper path than getting a synology enclosure.
Anything remotely modern can handle software RAID if you don’t have a controller. It is still recommended to boot from a non-raid drive.
I’m curious about your onboard RAID controller. Some motherboard-integrated RAID controllers actually offload the heavy lifting to a “driver”; that is, the RAID is all done in software anyway, so you might as well be running Linux MD RAID.
Don’t recall having to install any software explicitly. Doesn’t maen it’s not doing that.
But the box has resources to spare, and the bottlenecks are not at the drives.
btrfs has been around for a while — but it is a bit weird in uptake. RHEL had it… but then dropped support recently… while Fedora just made it their default root FS. (Explain that logic to me…).
I’ve been using it for my home NAS for some years now — because it is pretty decent with spanning multiple drives in a RAID1+0 manner (RAID 5/6 was buggy as heck, and while supposedly now fixed, I expect is poorly tested) in a manner easier than ZFS at least for me. (Drives can be heterogenous [that’s cis-drives, you drive-a-phobe!], can add them at will instead of making fixed pools, uses less RAM, etc.). I will say drive deletion / rebalance takes days but that’s probably unavoidable with 10-16Tb drives, I suppose.
I ran ZFS when I had a home-grown NAS. It was more stable at the time (~2010). I switched to btrfs when I migrated to a Synology NAS in 2019.
I run RAID 10 with 3 drives per mirror. It can take 1+ days to resilver with the size of drives. You want to have at least two failure tolerance. I know double parity is available, but it is slower to rebuild. Drives are inexpensive enough that I don’t mind the 1/3 of 3-mirror instead of the 1/2 of 2-parity.
Disks are not cheap with regards to my budget. Fortunately the “Valuable” data is less than 2gb and I can keep multiple backups. The 2.7TB of bulk data is entirely replacable.
(Valuable meaning I can’t just pull it again from another source – ie, my work output)
I also only have four bays to stick the drives in without having to replace cases and get an additional raid controller.
Have they finally solved that pesky “all your data is corrupted and there’s no recovery options” problem? It’s probable that btrfs isn’t as bad as it once was, but it’s also probable that overcoming its bad reputation will take so long that something else (e.g. XFS, which has diverged in Linux from what SGI released all those years ago) will supplant it instead.
As far as I know — I thought that was part of the whole RAID 5/6 issue they were having. RAID0, RAID1, RAID1+0 has been stable for ages.
Yeah, their problem is mostly one of marketing and communication. What features were well supported vs experimental, how to handle edge cases, how to configure and optimize the file system for different use cases, these things have all been communicated poorly and it has led to a lot of people getting burned using btrfs.
Back in the day my HS compsci teacher told me about a “shake” program he had seen to make the computer rack (HP 2000A) physically shake by constantly creating and deleting files. Young Tonio immediately wrote one of these and deployed it to the mild annoyance of the teacher.
Ha! I’ve never actually seen it happen, but there was an apocryphal tale told about the old DEC RA80 drive rack. Supposedly, a series of carefully timed disk seek commands could make a tune play on the disk array, or else cause the rack to run in ‘horizontal mode.’
Sort of like Stuxnet?
Traffic levels are indeed one of my greatest sources of daily aggravation.
GET OUT OF THE LEFT HAND LANE, YOU SLOW ASS MF’er.
A year ago, when traffic levels dropped, still had morons driving in the left lane with both lanes clear. They can’t help it apparently.
Driving slow in the left lane reduces the probability that you will have to change lanes because someone is driving slower than you. Same thing with the middle lane blockers.
To be fair, the left roadbed is often in far better condition than the right. At least here in MI, and I recall NC, OR, & MN being similar. That tends to develop the habit, especially if you a) drive fast and b) move right for those who drive faster.
That is exactly why my wife drives in the left lane. “It is smoother”
Sigh. She’s an Asian Woman Driver so maybe she can’t be helped, but she shouldn’t nag me when I’m driving to pull into the left lane because it is hard for her to fall asleep driving on the rough right lane.
Interstate 5 is that way as well up the Central Valley at least. Trucks (mostly) stick to the right, and you get some impressive potholes and ruts… because CA gas taxes can’t go to icky icky roads after all…
Plus I have sympathy for folks who get tired of “pass truck, merge back right… pass next truck .1 miles down road, repeat”. At some point it is simpler for cars to stay left and duck right when faster traffic comes up behind them.
Those people should be shot. Lazy fucks have no business on the road. It’s not difficult to pass and return to right lane if you’re actually driving, instead of sleeping, eating, texting your friends, or whatever else.
Also should be shot: people who speed up for passing lanes then slow down and people who cannot drive the same speed consistently (note to Califucktards that are driving in places with hills: if the road is going up in front of you, you must press the go faster pedal down further to maintain the same speed. Apparently this isn’t taught in what passes for their driver ed).
people who speed up for passing lanes then slow down
Disagreed. If I’m passing you at +1 MPH with my cruise on, I’m gonna mash the pedal to get around you faster and then let cruise take over once I get in front of you. There should be no conflict in that scenario unless the person I just passed is one of those people who decide to get all aggressive about it.
I just spent the last 8 miles gaining ground on them and now that I’m around them, they’re suddenly going faster than me? Surrrrre.
Yes, those drivers irk me to no end. I use my cruise control all the time, so I know my speed’s consistent.
I think he meant when it’s the temporary two lane passing sections where people speed up (two lanes must be a mental trigger that faster is ok?).
Gustave is talking about the asshole who has been going 53 in a 55 for the last ten miles of unpassable curves and hills, with 6 cars stacked up behind him.
When he gets to the one 1/4 mile straight open section, where people can pass him, suddenly he’s going 70.
Don’t worry about him though, he’ll slow down for the next 3 miles.
This happens along my way to work many mornings.
Yep. Bobarian had my unclear thinking, although 53 in a 55 would be one of the faster ones.
*Rousing applause*
It’s about stopping the people that will not comply like they do and feel the speed limits are for dorks. Don’t you know driving fast kills?
Driving at a speed dramatically faster or lower than the flow of traffic is what causes accidents. Those dickheads who do 60 in the fast lane are a lot more dangerous than the 20 drivers going 85 who have to check up because some fucko who is “teaching them a lesson”.
Agree totally Sloopster. And every time I have been caught behind some asshat doing 65 in the fast lane when I clearly am doing 90, I have eventually passed them to see some marmish asshole that is pissed I am not doing the speed limit like they believe I should.
a hill to die on
I still want a plow blade and a 105 mounted on the Big Ugly
Speaking of hills to die on and left lanes. There are a couple of ones marked “trucks right lane only” on the interstate. Apparently that means unless they feel like using the left lane, then have at it.
I was doing 100 in the left lane yesterday and some dude passed me on the right. I still felt like an asshole for not driving with proper etiquette.
*** thunderous applause ***
Big Ugly is chipped by GM to 100, but it takes such a dump when you hit the rev limiter that all I can really do is 95.
Out around Monahans, that’s a shame, but, there’s always that slowing down to 70 to cross ditches every other mile anyway.
I can’t imagine having a speed limiter. I had dinner with my son earlier this week and we went for a drive my newest vehicle (I bought a Macan S last week that’s had some mods done and is running at about 400 HP). He mentioned his car being limited to 100, and about shit when I just kept speeding past that number.
And if I’m being honest, this is the most enjoyable driving vehicle I’ve ever owned. Put about 1500 miles on it already and I get excited every time I go to the driveway.
I suspect 90% of driver who bitch about people hanging out in the left lane, hang out in the left lane. My experience when I occasionally zone out and stay in the passing lane to long and don’t notice the guy flying up behind me and get the headlight flash, after I pull over he goes by and stays right there in the left lane.
I’m a fan of adopting the German model… It’s OK to stay on the left if you’re maintaining speed, but you need to yield right as soon as you recognize someone gaining on you.
Not waiting until they’ve caught you.
If you’re the fastest person on that section of highway, the left should be yours.
Now you make me want to make a “You know who else…” comment.
But there’s not enough space for the replies.
Buddy of mine drove the autobahn years ago. He said it was crazy how fast cars were upon you. He drove a typical German sedan going over 100mph and would get passed by cars going much faster. They’d usually flash lights way in the distance and he’d move over just in time to see them go by.
I hear that. When I learned to drive they taught us to move in the path of least resistance. Nothing worse than somebody driving the speed limit when everyone else is zipping along.
There is a simpler law: As the number of people you interact with increases, the probability of encountering an asshole approaches 1.
I proved that formula once with 0 people by telling the person to look in the mirror….
This.
It doesn’t approach 1, it starts there.
https://youtu.be/sen8Tn8CBA4
Simpler: Ohio drivers are left lane assholes.
Fuck. Ohio. Drivers.
Indiana is worse though.
I was doing 75 in a 65 zone approaching a left exit recently when a diesel truck with an emissions delete decided I wasn’t going fast enough. So he passed on the right, got in front and smoked me. All so he could pick up another couple hundred yards.
Asshole
As a fast driver, I will say that camping the left lane in busier traffic is perfectly acceptable when all of the lanes are occupied. I hate getting over, like you’re supposed to, just to have some asshat ride your left fender just long enough to get stuck behind the slower vehicle in the middle lane. You then get passed by all of the other cars in the left lane because of the one car that had to ride your bumper with no intentions of actually going faster than you.
On a different note, if I’m going 13 over and you fly up behind me and ride my bumper, prepare to be brake checked, because fuck you. The least I will do is flip on my blinker and make the slowest lane change in history, just for you.
If we’re all stuck behind the semi – slow guy in the left lane and the other lanes are mostly full of cars and you try to pass me and use the 4 car lengths in front of me to cut me off, I will pace you and stare you down then entire time.
Second paragraph for the win.
Cy gets it. I don’t drive fast anymore, and I will drive in the left lane due to shit road conditions, but I will try to get over when appropriate.
But when other drivers act like complete asshats, fuck them.
I generally keep right as I’m not a fast driver. I will move right if faster traffic is approaching and I’m not keeping up with the car in front of me.
We have a lot of two-lane country roads here. I don’t care if you want to go 20 over the limit. If you race up and sit on my bumper, I will drive more cautiously so I don’t get a car up my ass if I have to slow. Enjoy riding my ass as far as you like. The closer you get, the slower I drive.
So, teaching XX to drive has been an adventure. Mr. Mojeaux has done most of the heavy lifting because I tend to tense up, hold the “oh-shit” handle, and other such nonsense the poor girl has to endure.
I’ve taught her a lot of things I didn’t know I knew and found out how much I DON’T know, or don’t notice anymore so I can’t give a straight answer.
Anyway, I’m a fast driver. Started wearing my seatbelt because my AD&D insurance doesn’t pay out if I’m not wearing it. Incentives matter. I’ve taught her to get over on the left if she can when approaching an entrance ramp to let people merge seamlessly. I’ve told her repeatedly it’s an act of courtesy. We’ve had some narrow misses on that one when there was someone in her blind spot.
She’s good about staying with the flow of traffic because yes, going significantly over or under the flow is what causes accidents. She’s good with knowing when to pass and when not to. She’s good about knowing that if she’s going to miss an exit to not try to hit it, but continue on to the next exit and double back.
She passed her driving test and she has her own car now, but she’s still nervous about driving by herself. I don’t know when that’s going to abate. I’ll send her out on some short jaunts and she can drive to work and back (that’s short), but she doesn’t want to drive all the way to Cerner by herself (busy highway section) and semis make her nervous. Well, shit, semis make everybody nervous.
It’s amazing how many little refinements you make as you get more and more experienced and how you can afford to zone out a little and let muscle memory take over.
If you miss your turn, you are supposed to do whatever it takes to get back on track: two-lane change, reverse on the shoulder, u-turn if necessary. Priorities, man. You can’t afford any inconvenience.
From thr Blinken article: “The top US diplomat said that in calls with nearly 100 counterparts, he was ‘hearing deep satisfaction that the United States is back, that we’re reengaged with our allies and partners. I’m also hearing deep concern about some of the actions your government is taking.'”
Remember how Trump never talked to allies, amd just sat around watching the gorilla channel.
*cough* bullshit *cough*
*the sound of international foes sharpening knives*
Ayatoll-ya so!
What they said was “We are glad we can freeload off of the deplorable’s tax money once again.”
More pallets of cash to fund Shia militias to kill your kids over there and wipe Israel off the map. I don’t get it. Why? Have you seen those IDF girls?
What he is hearing is foreigners telling him they are happy that diplomats like the one that made this fucking stupid comment are back and again bending the American people over and forcing them to take it in the ass so the foreign countries can profit at the expense of Americans.
amd just sat around watching the gorilla channel.
Dicks out for Harambe?
Always, Ted, always.
And there’s his out. That’s far worse than anything he did, in current day.
I gotta give credit to Cuomo for at least being an equal opportunity misogynist. Boylan and one other chick who has accused him are pretty hot. But there’s also a few dogs in the mix. Good on him for treating all women equally.
I know that it shouldn’t be but I actually believe these women about him. Call me a girl, if you wish. That guy is creepy as fuck.
You fucked up.
You trusted us.

Baseball birthdays: sloopy did okay, but the list begins with Clayton Kershaw, who is at 69.6 WAR thru 13 seasons, already eclipsing Ashburn’s 64.4. From them it falls to 3 players between 10 and 20, Gee Walker, the already mentioned Calderon, and David Ross. Two HoFers and then David Ross at #5.
Fun fact, Ross pitched 2 innings in his career across 2 games, giving up 0 runs on 0 hits and 0 walks. Two perfect innings. Not exactly ruthian, but still pretty good.
Both games pitched were in 2015 at age 38.
805 games as Catcher, 2 games as Pitcher, 1 game as DH.
What are MLB doing with the rules around position players pitching and pitchers playing other positions? I haven’t been playing close attention but in the last couple of seasons before plague time there were a few more all-rounders weren’t there? My understanding was the MLB was introducing some Catch-22 style rules to stamp that out.
The stupid rules were for the stupid year. So far in 2021, stupid rules are just for the minor.
The abomination of the DH hovers ever because most people prefer violence and loud noises over steady, contemplative intrigue; there is an unending throng of people who simply don’t understand the elegant balance: if you would bat, you must field or retire; if you would field or pitch, you must bat or retire. Gross collision is football, and there’s nothing wrong with loving that, but no amount of grace and logic will overcome “I just want to see home runs” and “who wants to see a pitcher bat.” Football has already been ruined by this sort of mindlessness: huge scores, four wide, outlawing defense. . . ugh.
I very much agree. I’m so glad they’ve ditched the NL DH quickly. Now finally get rid of it from the AL, too. And make double headers full games. If people don’t want to watch the whole thing they can go home, or catch the highlights after, or the condensed game.
* I mean I hope they finally get rid of it from the AL.
And the MLPA laughs at you.
DH will be gone soon. Not if, but when.
I hope so, but I dont see the MLBPA letting it happen. If anything, it will be forced upon the NL.
Agreed with robc. I hate the DH. Those fuckers play about 8 minutes of baseball a game. I want pitchers to be ball players, not just throwers.
The DH is old guy welfare. Guys who can no longer play ball, but can still hit. The MLBPA will never let that go, especially since DH is amongst the highest paid positions in baseball.
I know that milb is doing some weird stuff, limiting shifts so there has to be at least 4 players on the infield dirt at all times, and a bunch of others but i forget the rest
Wtf is so hard about hit it where they ain’t? Modern professional sports have become unwatchable.
Kershaw was a Highland Park Scot. I’m pretty sure Matt Stafford was his catcher . . . but one wonders what Matt could do from the mound.
/ Dallas vs Houston news
Ashburn was best slap hitter and bunter I ever saw. Had he played for the Yankees or Dodgers he would have been celebrated and a first round HOF selection instead of creeping in through the Old Timers vote.

Just because the American left has recently found it fashionable to criticize an institution doesn’t mean it hasn’t already bee despicable on its face for centuries and an abomination to any thinking person.

Absolutely. I think Megan Markle is a conniving bitch, but I couldn’t really care less because the institution of royalty is insulting in my eyes.

Putin grins at that.
And he says it rather frequently too.
Huh… he has a better grasp on reality than I thought…
A dose of hope? More like a dose of Fweedom.
Like grief, she says everyone’s experience and comfort level will be different.
“So, your family members might be ready to take their mask off and ready to follow the CDC guidelines as they’ve stated them, but you might have some hesitation and some anxiety and that’s OK,” she said.

Pederson says it’s important to acknowledge that everyone is experiencing this pandemic in their own unique way.
“I really encourage people if you have a family member or co-worker who says, ‘You know, I still would like us to keep our mask on for now.’ I think it’s OK to say, ‘Well, let’s delay this next step.’”

chess.com update. Two nights ago I got to 1100 ELO for the first time. Link to game is below, it is also the first time I have beaten anyone ranked over 1100. I was playing black. After 45 years or so of floundering around at this game, I am happy with the progress I have made last 60 days. Playing live games against real people of approximately equal strength helps.
1100
Congrats.
Personally, I once managed to stumble on to the fastest way to lose a chess match.
I did it twice recently playing blitz. My 1100 is at rapid, which I play with 10 minute clock. I play blitz at 3|2, which is 3 minutes plus a 2 second increment per move. I suck at it, rating in the 500s. The game above was someone trying to do the same, the wayward queen attack is a version of the scholar’s mate. Having fell for it twice at blitz speed, I have learned the defense, so at rapid speed there was no chance of me screwing it up too badly.
Bullet (1 minute clock) is stupid, I dont know how people play it at all.
Lots of GMs play blitz or bullet on-line because of the incidence of cheating at high levels in rapid.
Cool! Yeah, bullet seems insane. Something that would require a ton of memorization to even start to play. I’m still in the “scan the board, try to remember to acknowledge every active piece, checks and forks, etc” mode. Heck , Don beat me with the timer on rapid , and it was a fairly standard game we played.
https://www.chess.com/article/view/fastest-chess-checkmates
I’m pretty sure I was the fool.
Can I sic my son on you? Serious question- he’s a chess.com enthusiast.
You asked before…sure. You can get my id from the link above. I play at oddball times, so don’t know if I will be around. So far I have just played random people that get a match assigned.
I feel bad whenever I beat a Russian. You are Russian AND suck at chess, life has to be hard.
I was doing 100 in the left lane yesterday and some dude passed me on the right. I still felt like an asshole for not driving with proper etiquette.
That mirror’s not just for fixing your makeup, darling.
My left lane rant:
On U S 20, coming through the Targhee National Forest, there are several suicide lane passing areas; three lanes, with a center lane marked preferentially for uphill traffic. The rule is, STAY THE FUCK OUT OF THAT CENTER LANE UNLESS YOU ARE ACTUALLY PASSING SOMEBODY, NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION YOU ARE GOING. I repeatedly saw people pull into and sit in that center lane for no reason at all. This would be a rare justification for police patrol drones and summary loss of license, in the P Brooks 1,000 year Reich.
Forgive my conceit, (or don’t, ungrateful colonials) but I was saying that all this talk of “the ‘rona disappearing when Biden comes into office” was classic insular American thinking. It’s not a world leader in monkey see monkey do anymore, and the ‘rona response was bigger than just American political drama.
I’m feeling like making friends today.
Was a bad calculation on my part. I didn’t see that the Pre-Harris Administration would use the ‘rona panic to tick boxes off their legislative wish list and pay off their cronies. I should’ve seen that, but I did not.
It is telling that CNN’s Plague Case counter disappeared on January 21st, though.
Correct. It’s a worldwide scam to get people to test mRNA gene therapy, perpetrated by the drug companies. I’m not up on the Ron Laws, but the first one should be: Follow the money

To which the Glib corollary is: you cant fix typos.

I’m just a simple man. Apparently your can’t fix stupid was directed at me. Fuck off.
No, I was signing about my typo in the crack about typos.

[big fucking sigh]
LOL
My apologies. I’m definitely on edge more lately for a number of reasons mostly related to COVID.
But this is one reason I struggle here. No context.
That narrative was just the inverse of the “it’s all Trump’s fault” narrative. Both were uniquely stupid, quite insular, and of course quintessentially American.
Anyone who believes the President of the United States is in charge of anything, least of all the U.S. Government, must have spent the past 4+ years in cave. Just because the bureaucrats favored Biden over Trump does not mean they are about to surrender any power. The bureaucracy has nearly reached its perfect state; competence is irrelevant, power is diffused, the money spigot never gets turned off, and no one is responsible for anything.
And anyone who believes “the West” isn’t almost completely spent as cultural or political force at its top levels is equally out of touch. There remains not a single institution which isn’t either hollowed out or about to be. Some say China stands to benefit the most from this, but besides raw ambition, the Chinese upper levels are just good-enough yes-men. The spirit of curiosity, innovation, and creativity is dead; the concept of government in the public interest is dead; and above all else accountability and transparency are dead.
The solutions to our problems will not come from the top because the people near the top have ensured they can’t.

Interesting historical story of no consequence – The Arms of Krupp came up earlier and it reminds me of this anecdote.
During the war my Grandfather had a contract to use German prisoners (Wehrmacht, not hard core Nazis) as labor for cutting and milling timber. One of them was a machinist who had worked for Krupp. My father, just a kid then would go along and hang around. The only job he had was to go around to the guys and pass out their lunches to them when lunch break came. They ate peanut butter sandwiches and Kool-aid. One day when my father brought lunch to the machinist the guy had a circular saw blade centered on a stump table top style going around it sharpening each tooth with a file. I dont know how it came up but they began talking and he told my father that our steel was shit.
I just thought I would share that.
I have a friend whose family farm used German POW labor. From what I understand, some were allowed to return to the US after the war and even became citizens?
I have other anecdotal stories about that as well. Most of the regular army guys said they never would have gone to war against us if they had any idea what our country was like. They all wanted to live here and did NOT want to go back to Germany after the war.
America has been an eye-opener for a long time. Something like 17% of the Hessian mercenaries during the Rev War made the decision to desert and stay in the new U.S. of A.

It’s Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton, by the way. He was a Man among Men! Born in India to an East Indian Company officer father, he spoke multiple languages, translated the Kama Sutra and the One Thousand Nights and One, discovered the source of the Nile, snuck into both Mecca and Salt Lake City, was governor of Sudan, along with a host of other great feats.
Truly a great man.
I read up on the real Burton after reading the Riverworld series. He was indeed a fucking badass.

No love for sanitation, antibiotics, refrigeration, cars, computers, phones, etc?
The Good Old Days were horrible.
Meh. Horrible is a bit much. I’m of no illusion I’m as hard a man as my blacksmith/logger great grandfather from that era, but right about now I’d trade all of those to be just left the fuck alone.
Today is very convenient. Yesteryear was very liberating.
Im soft, too, but I’d trade some of my convenience for liberty at this point.

Suicide by braided toilet paper. Mind you, she might have succumbed to mind-rays by now.
Shit. Just drunkenly tripped over my namesake. Smashed down hard on my knee. The pain. It burns… Fuck!
Ow!
I hope it’s just a temporary pain and no real damage.
Me too. I’m not yet retirement age.
I don’t know if I’m horrified or amused at how bad the Biden administration is doing. Apparently the Narrative stops at our borders, and the other world leaders aren’t buying Democrat bullshit.
Are you referring to the Putin thing, or something else? I was thinking this morning in the shower about what people in other countries must be thinking about our dysfunction at the moment. I’m frankly surprised that some country or other hasn’t moved to take advantage of the obvious weaknesses. I’d expect some interesting international incidents before the end of the summer.
…and any Taiwanese nuclear projects have been accelerated to top speed.
Kind of funny that I could see more of an active role for SEATO these days when NATO has so obviously lived way past its shelf life….
I’m really curious to see if Kim Jong Un is going to float back to the surface, although that’s probably the least consequential international issue that could happen. Something between Russia and Ukraine — Biden might be entirely hamstrung in such a situation due to his family’s well known involvement there.
Similarly, China could do something to test Biden’s capacity and resolve, and his ties there would hurt him as well. I certainly don’t think he’s under their control, obviously, but there’s probably a lot of embarrassing information that could come out. That could lead to even more chaos in our government and even trigger a 25th Amendment push. The question would be, does either Putin or Xi prefer to deal with Harris or Biden?
Biden is a puddle. My 99 YO grandpa is more coherent, though they walk the same. He’s not in charge of his own faculties, how can he have intense discussions with strong world leaders? They much prefer Biden, I’m sure. Plus, they won’t be able to bully Harris due to the woman thing.
They won’t have to bully Harris.
She’s so far out of her depth it’s not even funny. She has no clue how to deal with hostility. She’s never had to deal with it politically.
Putin, and the China thing yesterday, and before that France even saying our wokeness is too much even for them.
I guess I missed the China news yesterday?
There was some kind of summit with China, and both sides were supposed to have a 2 minute opening statement. Instead China took 20 minutes to lecture the US about human rights and how we are no longer a world leader. Apparently it made the US diplomat look quite foolish.
And weak. He just sat there. He should have walked out long before the diatribe finished.
It was the first in what will likely be a series of tests. The Biden Admin failed.
So I read up on that, and was surprised (not really, given this admin) to see that after that opening, the US delegation just continued discussions? Wouldn’t it have been better to answer, and then say, “let’s meet again when you have something constructive to talk about?”
What memo would that be? All my proggie friends are over the moon about how “calm and dignified” their new president is, and how their overseas colleagues are thrilled America has “returned to its senses.”
If overseas colleagues are happy, we’re doing something wrong.
their overseas colleagues are thrilled America has “returned to its senses.”
Yes, that’s the criterion I use when deciding who to vote for.
Jeezus, another remake of the The Manchurian Candidate?
Joe Biden is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I’ve ever known in my life
Dignified? Dignified?
There are many adjectives that can be honestly applied to Joe Biden. Dignified has never been one of them, even before he went senile.
I thought the line was “He’s compassionate and CARES about Americans! unlike his impostor predecessor!!1!”
Don’t forget empathy. Biden’s supporters are big on empathy.
Math? I’ll give you math
As more companies announce diversity and inclusion measures, Ariel Investments’ co-CEO Mellody Hobson believes there’s a simple way to hold corporations accountable: math.
“Math has no opinion — have the math. The only way you can do that is commit to having an annual review of these issues to see where you’re gaining ground, where you’re losing ground,” she told CNBC’s Sharon Epperson as part of the network’s Inclusion in Action forum.
“Measuring, and then having the wherewithal to publish those numbers I think holds everyone accountable,” she said, before adding that tying compensation to diversity metrics could prompt the swiftest changes.
The only numbers I care about are profitability and return on investment, you insipid moaning ninny.
Apparently she didn’t get the memo that math is now white supremacist.
adding that tying compensation to diversity metrics could prompt the swiftest changes.
Bahahahahaha…..can’t see anything going wrong there.
Why are you bringing up the fact my idea to slingshot people to the moon will not work because your honkey math tells you this process can’t produce the required escape velocity without jellying up all meatsuits in the slingshot ball? FUCKING RACIST!
In business, you get more of what you measure.
Measuring the wrong things accurately don’t make you successful.
Doesn’t
Hobson noted that policies designed to promote growth and equity across hiring practices — including at the board level — is a step in the direction, but not enough. She focuses on what she calls the three “P”s — people, purchasing and philanthropy. It’s the purchasing category that Ariel believes needs more attention. This encompasses all areas of a company’s spending power and supply chain.
“We think that is another area where you can start to move the needle on equality in corporate America,” Hobson said.
Fiduciary responsibility? Hahahahahahaha.
So… quotas, funnelling money to only “approved” contractors/suppliers (graft) and donating money to “approved” causes (even more graft)?
Yeah, that doesn’t sound like an initiative to fence Corporate America into a cash cow for their politics or anything….
All of these things presume that the company is successful and has money to burn.
“Equality” in corporate America? You’re supposed to use the word “equity.” Update your manual to the newest version.

Re: Driving
When I was younger my goal if I ever hit it big and got so rich I didn’t have to work was to become a super hero fighting traffic congestion.
I would be The Rusty Avenger.
I’d buy a bunch of old beater cars and insure myself to the hilt. Then I’d drive the freeways during rush hour. When I saw some asshole driving badly and inconveniencing his fellow drivers I would close in on him and cause a minor fender bender. Then I’d get out (in my cape and tights) laugh and lecture at the asshole driver, give them my insurance card and flee the scene.
I’d never contest the accident so the asshole would get his car repaired by insurance, but he’d have to deal with the hassle of dealing with estimates, adjusters and mechanics.
Soon, anytime a beater car was spotted on the freeway everyone would begin driving politely.
There are no beater cars anymore. MmmMmmMmm Barack Hussein Obama!
Yeah and all of the great Japanese cars from the late’80s/early ‘90s were crushed. What a drag that was.
If you can find a copy of If I Had a Million, the segment with W.C. Fields and Alison Skipworth is similar.

Everything is stupid and ugly now.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Thursday that the U.S. has a “once in a century opportunity” to push forward infrastructure reforms and added that the country is on the verge of an “infrastructure season” that could potentially turn into an “infrastructure decade.” Buttigieg spoke Thursday at the virtual South by Southwest festival.
“In the last administration, infrastructure week became a punchline,” Buttigieg said during a keynote session. “We kept getting our hopes up for something big to happen on infrastructure and it never did.”
The new transportation secretary said his vision of 21st century infrastructure includes the “unglamorous” task of repairing the roads and bridges across the country, while making sure transportation plays a critical role in helping battle climate change.
Infrastructure- it’s like a post-hypnotic trigger for these dopes.
“When you hear the word, you will be suffused with feelings of peaceful relaxation and the happy satisfaction of a meaningful accomplishment.”
What, you have no sympathy for New Jersey commuters who have to wait a minute or two longer so their half-empty train can go under the Hudson River into NYC because the folks in Iowa and Alabama and Nevada didn’t give them a couple billion to build a second rail tunnel?
I picked the worst week to start to lose weight. Yesterday was my son’s birthday, and he asked me to make fried chicken cutlets and mashed potatoes with gravy as his birthday dinner. So of course I’m too weak to avoid eating it, plus cake, and now we have leftovers of all of it sitting around. I can hear them calling to me softly in the still of the kitchen: “You’re hunnnnnnngry”
But you didn’t try to give up sniffing glue?
The apology will never satisfy these assholes, and it’s an admission of guilt.
“Confess your sins, be absolved of them and welcomed back into the loving embrace of the Church.”
Haha, sucker!
They follow Deuteronomy 5:9 with visiting the sins of the father unto the third and fourth generation. Just wait until Barron Trump’s grandkids try to get a job in the New Woke U.S.A.
So Captain America’s secret identity is the lead singer of Dexys Midnight Runners?
Seriously though, if they were trying to be deliberately offensive with the depiction of a Gay Captain, I don’t think they would have drawn him much differently.
Ooooo-wah-ooooo-wah-ooooo-wah-yeahhhhhhhh
?
To be fair — and I haven’t cared enough to look into it much… as I hear it this is one of those “Main characters take a road trip across America and meet knock-offs^Wlocal heroes inspired by them” miniseries.
You know, the ones where writers get to dump their fan fiction versions of the actual characters because no one actually wanted to read their ideas.
And the ones that I’m sure will always portray the US away from the coastal regions properly….
When you let your party be overrun by feral children, you have to expect a few tantrums
“It will be Armageddon,” Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley told CBS News when asked whether Democrats will suffer in the midterms if they don’t enact filibuster reforms. “Our base will be so dispirited, so angry, so disaffected. They will stay home. And I understand why they will stay home if we failed them.”
Merkley has long been pushing for filibuster changes, and introduced the “talking filibuster” which would require senators to actually hold the floor to hold up legislation rather than the current practice of phoning it in. In an interview with ABC News, Mr. Biden said he supported that kind of reform, which reminded him of how the upper chamber operated in his early days as a senator. Now, he said, “It’s getting to the point where, you know, democracy is having a hard time functioning.”
But advocates note that Republicans haven’t yet filibustered legislation, such as the COVID relief bill, which was passed on party lines through a reconciliation process that only requires majority support. Once the opposition begins in earnest to agenda items like voting rights, climate, immigration and other Democratic priorities, the calls from the base of the party to change the upper chamber’s rules will only grow louder.
“Right now it’s an abstract issue, nothing has been filibustered yet. It’s going to get real quickly,” said Eli Zupnick, spokesman for Fix Our Senate, which launched a six figure ad campaign this week pushing lawmakers to eliminate the filibuster.
I eagerly await the petulant shrieking toddlers wailing about having been betrayed by “Do-Nothing” appeasers and turncoats.
Purge the impure. Root out the heretics and wafflers.
I also can’t wait to say, “You voted for that worthless idiot, don’t talk to me about it,” to a few people.
“Fix Our Senate”…..FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOU
Shows what a miserable failure the people are to understand their own government.
dELibErATive!
It’s refreshing to know that multi-trillion-dollar grandkid-busters can pass with mob rule.
A republic moves too slow for them and they see things like the fillibuster as a roadblock and detour to the treasury door.
” introduced the “talking filibuster” which would require senators to actually hold the floor to hold up legislation rather than the current practice of phoning it in”
I’d probably support this.
Strom Thurmond still holds the record for longest single person filibuster, he went over 24 hours.
Without the filibuster, you can get ready to celebrate the 51st and 52nd states. And it doesn’t look better for 2022 senate races – aren’t there 22 GOP seats up and only 9 Dem?
The Dems should want to split California into Northern and Southern and pick up two more Senate seats.

Well, the cops need something to do with all the free time on their hands now that DA’s and prosecutors aren’t going after actual crimes.
I got some “Kind” granola/nutrition bars at the store the other day.
I don’t know what they’re made out of, but it’s like trying to bite through a polyurethane suspension bushing.
I read that as “polyurethane suspension binding” and was about to reply “no need to bite through it, just say the safe word.”
I’m a big fan of this company.
Rather have two Snickers bars.
The ones on the right look good. Pass on the nut ones on the left.
I’m going to start making stuff like cheddar bacon granola bars. All of this sickly sweet stuff isn’t for me.
Thank you!
Uh-huh…

CCP strategy #1: deflect, distract, dissemble
Hey peeps.
I got a call from our pal Fourscore this morning. A few days ago, he took a good fall outside his place and managed to fracture his pelvis. He’s currently in the hospital and sampling pain killers.
He said that he doesn’t have a prognosis yet, but he will probably stay awhile in the hospital. He’s got a decent support system, so things around the compound will be taken care of.
I’ll update as soon as I hear more. I asked if it was OK to share the story and he said he could use the positive thoughts. So let’s have some, huh? He’s not a religious guy, but I don’t think prayers would offend him, either.
Oh, that sucks!
*channels positive thoughts for Fourscore*
*gets out crystals and copper meditation pyramid*
Prayers the fourscore and family. Thanks Tundra for the update
Glad he’s ok. Did he say what caused the fall?
Yeah, he wiped out on some ice. Sucks.
Wow that sucks, but definitely hoping for a swift recovery. Broken pelvis sounds like no nookie for at least a week.
Ouch — definitely wishing him the best. Probably worth a repost in whatever later morning story we get today, I expect most people have moved on to their actual work by this point.
Yeah, I’ll repost in each of them this afternoon.
Get well, Fourscore.
Ya know if’n yer damn legs weren’t so long it would have been a shorter fall!
Oh my. Good ol’ fourscore. I imagine hospital life will drive him crazy. At least there’s WiFi now…
Will be praying for Fourscore ‘s recovery and for a hospital stay that’s as comfy as possible.
Oh, good heavens, no!
What a bummer. Prayers are what he’s gonna get.
Sorry to hear that. Falls are no picnic for the aged. A friend in early 70s fell on ice last month and needs 8mm taken out of his radius bone to correct the fracture. There goes his part-time work driving a school bus for the special kids. Climate change (warming) can’t come soon enough for those of us in winter climates.
Oh jesus. I think SP and I need to get out there to visit him.
Thanks for letting us know. I wish him a quick recovery.
? positive vibes ?
4x has my positive thoughts for a speedy recovery.
I’m very sorry to hear this, and wish him all the best. May his recovery be complete and speedy!
I thought he was just on yesterday or the day before? Man. Hoping for the best.
Get well soon, Fourscore.
Godammit. Get well very soon, 20×4!
I cracked my pelvis in a car accident, but I was 14 at the time, so the experience was probably different.
Fucking in the back seat does not constitute a “car accident”, for the record.
“Experts” say OBEY
States are pushing ahead with expanding Covid-19 vaccine access and rolling back restrictions on businesses and large gatherings as America seeks a return to normalcy.
But experts say two barriers stand in the way of reaching herd immunity and getting back to life as we knew it — Covid-19 variants and vaccine hesitancy.
“We’re seeing restrictions being lifted in so many parts of the country, we’re seeing travel at an all-time high. People are already going back to pre-pandemic normal,” emergency physician Dr. Leana Wen told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Thursday.
“We have a pretty narrow window of opportunity to make clear what the benefits of vaccinations are. We know that these vaccines are really effective at preventing severe disease. They also do substantially reduce your risk in each of these different types of settings, whether it’s going to the restaurant or gym, or seeing family and friends.”
——-
Dr. Wen stressed on Thursday to CNN that with the visible increase in travel and people moving toward pre-pandemic lifestyles without proper safety measures, a message needs to be enhanced by the CDC to the general public: inoculation leads to a quicker return to safer activities.
“What the CDC really needs to do at this point is to say for unvaccinated people, here are the activities that are low risk, medium risk and high risk. Probably a lot of things are going to be high risk for unvaccinated people,” Wen said.
“Then they need to say for vaccinated individuals, you’re able to do so much more. Nothing is going to be zero risk, but many of these activities that were formally high risk are now low risk,” she said. “I think that type of benefit of vaccination really needs to be illustrated to people.”
What we cannot allow is people thinking for themselves.
formally?

What a fucking tool…
How did he feel about the Summer of Love events?
If you can find a copy of If I Had a Million, the segment with W.C. Fields and Alison Skipworth is similar.
“ROADHOG!”
*reads fourscore news*
Oh, shit. Good thoughts and hope, Mister Beekeeper.
Sloopy, I commend you on today’s comprehensive list of links. That’s a long’un.
RE: Captain America character:
“who protects homeless youths and runaways,”
Wait until they steal his shit.
Then he turns into Homelander.
I’m secretly hoping for a Homelander rehab arc in The Boys. Season 1 was great. Season 2 was … bleh.
A redemption arc for him would be incongruous. He’s a sociopathic narcissist and he should not change.
Yeah, but they have to go somewhere with the character because none of the good guys are going anywhere interesting.
I predict Homelander will get pretty interesting once he realizes what The Black Noir is up to…
Speaking of meh series, season 3 of Cobra Kai got too stupid to bear by the end of episode 3. Nobody (and by nobody, I mean Johnny) learns anything, nobody changes. I want Johnny to grow. I don’t care if Danny does, but Johnny should learn something.
Johnny kinda grew, though, didn’t he?
He did. And then in season 3 reverted back to cringey stupid.
I will give him this: I wouldn’t know what to do about Kreese, either.
Kreese is a damaged human ossified beyond repair, cut him out of your life and move on. Get a restraining order, before he tricks you into losing your cool and getting one against you. Be prepared to defend yourself. Relocate.
I know nothing of her, but really? They are making moves to expel her from Congress?
https://www.zerohedge.com/political/twitter-freezes-marjorie-taylor-greenes-account-ahead-vote-expel-her-congress
Hilarious.
I thought we were supposed to respect the voters’ choice and “defend democracy?” If they remove her, and refuse to seat the Iowa congresswoman who won very narrowly, I think we should start talking about “Democrat Insurrectionists.”
“I take no joy in introducing this resolution…”
Can anyone here think of how this might in any way be a true statement?
How about expelling every member that violates their oath of office, dickwad?
To Gomez.

I note that my Alma mater has managed to get a number 4 seed in the March Madness tourney.
Too bad the kids are all going through this once-in-a-lifetime experience wearing face diapers and quarantining from the outside world.
Still, go Pokes! May Pistol Pete continue packing heat as part of his mascot costume forever!
It looks like they’re trying to design a costume for gay Captain America which is gayer than the costume for straight Captain America. Good luck with that.
Every time I see a headline which starts out, “Most Americans” I reflexively insert “are idiots, on their best day”.
This is especially applicable to surveys regarding how other people’s money should be disbursed, college loan forgiveness and the minimum wage being two prominent and popular examples.
God I’m poor…

Some members called their loved ones to say goodbye
*outright, prolonged laughter*
I know, right? I’m not sure what’s funnier; the idea of a bunch of politicians sobbing out their last goodbyes as the mob batters down the last door, or the idea that politicians actually have loved ones.
The number of people who would be required to help fake the green screen is less than the number of Journolist participants.
And once again, there an easy way to put this to bed. Release all of the B roll and raw footage for the entire event.
And hold a real press conference, outdoors if they like, with filming from the moment he walks out to walking back in.
Sure, the press’ll get right on that, just like they kept the cameras rolling every time FDR entered or left a room…
Fucks given either way: 0
Biden isn’t in charge of anything. He’s an irrelevant figurehead. Who cares what fakery they put out?
If he’s still alive in a few months, they’ll be wheeling him around in a Captain Pike chair and the media will fawn as he blinks “yes” or “no”.
The video looks weird as hell, but what would be the point of faking this? I don’t get it. He looks just as addled as he does any other time.
Anything remotely modern can handle software RAID if you don’t have a controller.
Yeah… I was due for an upgrade on the main PC till I learned about the whole, Fuck You Silicon Shortage, so I turned my focus on my files.
Raid1 in the main PC was annoying my balls off the past few years. Replaced all its platters with ssds this xmas.
Got 3 more platters, tossed em all in the Ole’ i7-3770k/32gb. 6x 2TB in raid6 for 7.3TB of some of the slowest fucking storage youve ever seen. Far far slower than the drives individually.
So I dropped 300bucks on a LSI 9271-8i with the ssd cache addon. Sequential write speeds per CrystalDiskMark better than my new WD Black Gen3 ssds. Ingested a 31gb payload without ever saturating the cache, at the max read of the source ssd. some screen caps
tl:dr
Yeah, software raid in an old machine WILL work. 4/8 old cores/threads can only do so much though. Throw a raid card in it if you want your files to ever make it into it before you end up upgrading to your next storage solution. Or just buy a newer machine with 16 cores (once possible) if you want to do software raid. Then you can just drop another dumb hostbus adapter in it when you want to go past the number of drives you can connect to the motherboard.
I’m not sure what you did get get such piss-poor performance on the spinning platters, because I had much better results on worse hardware.
Intel’s SATA? The Marvell controller only had 3 ports, and the mobo cant raid across controllers…
To be fair, it was still initializing the volume the first time I tried copying to it. “30MB/s WHAT IN THE EVER LOVING FUCKING HEL…*installs the intel raid software…gets proper status indicator for the raid* Ohhhh *waits for initialization to complete*
*waits*
*waits*
And then it still only managed 70-100MB/s when the drives individually could manage 150+ easy
As for budget, 2TB Seagate Baracudas were only $50/each.
I did a chart
I’ll take your word for it (imgur hates me)
my calculus said I don’t want to replace a 2TB disk with another 2TB disk, if I was cracking the case, I was upgrading something
Try ImgBB https://imgbb.com/
The image PFW shared was on imgur… kinda makes it hard to see when I can’t figure out why that site won’t load on my machine. I wasn’t trying to share anything myself.
Oh I see.
replace? MULTIPLY, MUWAHAHAHA.
I’d share the pic of the completed HD stack with super sexy cable management, but you can’t figure out how to open a different browser, and I can’t be bothered to start another image sharing account. Wydev.net wasnt worth $100/yr to share photos, but I’m not so sure anymore…
As an enticement though, you can see my Calculus for Dummies book in the background, so…
Raid1 in the main PC was annoying my balls off the past few years.
SOFTWARE raid1, so any crash, every lil brownout/heavy wind gust that touched a branch to a power line…tied up 12% of my CPU the next 6hours as the volume resynched.
(a UPS was another addition to the storage system this round of upgrading. Whycome nobody told me they were so affordable years ago, huh, whatgives?! Way to advertise, APS.)
I have UPSes on all of my computers.
I lost several power supplies to brownouts at my apartment so I made it a standard element.
So i blame you, then?
I was mobile devices that really did it for me. “Everything else has it’s own battery now, dammit, my PCs are the only thing that doesn’t yet almost deserves it the most!” *goes shopping* *blown away by affordability of current market in Smart Batteries*
I only got the entry level APS dealie, but dang, I’m sufficiently impressed. More than enough juice to shut the system down, but the battery connectors are nice an beefy; i didn’t feel the need to go digging deeper inside after that, maybe thats how they trick you. “Ha, all we need to do is put the 10ga wires on the battery, the rest of the guts can be garbage, the morons!” Well, and the battery itself is a nice piece of Chonk too. The software side has nice generality to it, it shows up practically everywhere that has sensor scraping.
Way to go APS.
Also, curious if that led to a psu brand change?
I didn’t have any brand loyalty there, so I couldn’t tell you which ones the dead power supplies were.
“brand” might not have been the right word.
Did you stop buying $40 bargain bin supplies?
*shrug*
Don’t know. It’s been so long since I’ve bought one I’d be hard pressed to tell you what I paid.
“Gee, i dunno if I got this out of the bargain bin. I mean, no, it doesn’t have any logos on it, it’s just a plain metal box that says ‘Made In Hangzhou’, but yeah, I’m sure It’s quality construction that I paid a reasonable price for…”
Not that plain metal boxes SHOULDNT be just fine…but they rarely contain good products anymore. I’d only trust it if I was the one that put the components in the box.
Not to fanboy it up, but I’ve stuck with corsair since c.2013, had one lower wattage, lower-efficiency CX- model supply that I was really pushing in a tight case (READ: shit was hot), mid summer in a hot room (READ: shit was even hotter), die from a brownout. I replaced two CX- models for RX- models to get modular cables, that’s it. Five supplies over 8yrs. (I just purchased the fifth.) The CX’es still work fine if I had a use for some ~600W, non-modular supplies.
At a minimum UPS your network and servers. I have one UPS for the ONT and another to keep my servers and LAN up.
I just had no idea $150 units were a thing now. I don’t think I’d looked into it this century…
Definitely less expensive than they were in the oughts.
Biden can best you in push ups and the stair climber
