GlibFit 4.0 – Coronavirus Edition LIII: It’s Epic, I mean EPOC

by | Mar 21, 2021 | Fitness, GlibFit | 142 comments

I’m writing this while drinking beer, watching Baywatch, listening to Eddie Trunk, and nibbling some dark chocolate.  Make of that what you will. I’m doing this after hitting a personal best with my Crossrope set; 28:45 of continuous jumping.  I worked up a nice sweat which felt like a good way to end the week.

That workout really did lead to this week’s column.  We all know working out burnscalories.  But what effect, if any, does that have on calorie burn when you are done? Apparently, the huffing and puffing from exercise is a sign of an oxygen debt.  Who knew?

Physiology nerds call it excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC).  The basic idea is strenuous exercise leaves you oxygen deprived.  You need to take in extra oxygen to get back to your resting metabolic rate. The larger your oxygen debt the more calories you burn after your workout.  This is starting to explain why it seems to take so much longer to get back to resting rate after sprinting or some type of HIIT workout.

Interestingly, strength training helps with EPOC.  Greater muscle size leads to a greater post-workout calorie burn. Working larger muscle groups also contributes to a greater EPOC and its concomitant energy burn.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

California’s 7day Covid case rate has fallen so far, we are back to our early June numbers.  Notwithstanding that, because of my governor’s completely arbitrary tier system, my county only this week went down to the red tier.  For the longest time I could not understand how the red tier wasn’t the highest tier.  Instead purple is the highest tier.  Have you ever seen movie with people screaming purple alert in a crisis?  Me neither.

It finally hit me.  The governor set up a system based on his dick.  I’ll leave it all of you to decide if it’s ever yellow or orange.  He was married to Kimberly Guilfoyle so maybe she can tell us.  For sure, he looked down one day and realized purple is more severe than red, so here we are.  This may explain why 2.1 million Californians have signed the petition to recall the bastard.

This song will make you do HIIT.  It starts with an aggressive rhythm and around the threeminute mark on the album version it really takes off.  No matter how tired I am, when this song comes on, I kick it into high gear.  When the song takes off, I involuntarily go into a higher gear.  I think I linked this song recently but I can’t be asked to enact my own labor to check.  Just enjoy it (again.)

Beautiful day today. A little cool, 63F, but sunny and no wind. Just put the pepper plants outside.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Almost ready for the peppers, maybe 2 more weeks, the weed is killing! Good crop,

    • hayeksplosives

By coincidence, I just watered my parapet plants. They’re still in a grow tent in the house. It dips into the 30s some nights, so I’m giving them a little more indoor time.

It’s about 68 and sunny today. Very warm indeed in the sun, fairly cool in the shade with a breeze.

I haven’t paid much attention to my own fitness this week. But the hubby is trying to get around without his walker today, so collectively we are making progress.

Some people say everyday gets us a day closer to dying. I disagree. I’ve been closer to dying before, and my husband was definitely closer to dying a month ago than he is now.

So I’m taking a positive spin and disagreeing with the mindset that every day is closer to dying.

      • TARDis

        So, how were your steaks?

    28:45 of continuous jumping.

    Holy shit! Nice work.

I finally got on a scale. I am down 35 lbs from my fattest ever some 2 years ago. 20 more to get where I want to be. I was asked at work if I was losing weight. I said no, my muscles are just getting HUGE. Dood called bullshit, which is right.

This is starting to explain why it seems to take so much longer to get back to resting rate after sprinting or some type of HIIT workout.

I am still doing rowing machine sprints most weekday mornings except when I flake out. I am a big believer in HIIT even if it is for 5 mins. Max your heart rate until you feel like your going to stroke out and either you stroke out or your heart gets stronger. (I am not a Dr, and this is not medical advice)

I worked a super spreader event last night and almost 29,000 steps logged on the phone for the day. I am sore as fuck today in spite of late night zooming and numerous medicinal tequila and sodas. I plan a few more this afternoon, for medicinal purposes only, while I cook the weeks meats.

    • Chafed

That’s great progress on the weight loss WS! I totally agree even a small amount of HIIT a few days a week makes a big difference.

  11. Gender Traitor

O/T except inasmuch as stress management is an important part of every fitness plan (it is, isn’t it?):

After having swept the accumulated winter detritus off the back porch and into the still-brown zoysia, and once again wrestling a giant marshmallow into submission, I am proud to declare, to no one’s interest but my own, that Tranquility Base is open for the 2021 season.

    I feel better already.

I think there might be more science behind your theory than whatever it is Fauci is currently spewing.

St. Patrick’s week is over, so back to booze limits.

Weight stayed steady over last week but bodyfat percentage went down. 273.3 lbs @ 27.1%.

I tried sumo deadlifts off plates to shorten the range of motion. My form must have been a bit off as I felt little twinges and knots in my right hamstring as I did them. Otherwise, the week’s workouts went find with no irritation of the herniation or nerve. My trainer wants me to try loading my spine in different ways. I tried some kettlebell reverse lunges where I held the kettlebells up by my shoulder. No problems other than maintaining my balance. Monday I’ll use the safety squat bar again for some squats.

    • TARDis

      27.1%?

      Are you a giant?

      • DEG

        No. Overweight.

Did a little Glibfit this week. Got my truck stuck in snow this week. Shouldn’t have happened but the combination of refrozen ice and slushy snow left me high centered with spinning wheels. Ended up digging it out and to boot, some nice guy stopped and lent a hand.

So I don’t feel too bad and blowing it all by picking up some Girl Scout cookies today. Happened to check the cookie website and saw they were doing booth sales at grocery stores again. Felt like thanking them by buying a box or two.

    • DEG

Having a shovel in the car during the winter months is wise.

In a snowstorm with poor visibility, I was a little too far right as I exited the highway near my house. I got hung up on the snowbank. I said, “I’ll be damned if I get towed home this close to home.” I got out, I got my shovel, and dug out the bank enough that I could rock the car free and get home.

      • DEG

        Heh.

I had a rear wheel drive car, proper snow tires, and a shovel. I also spun my tires less than he did.

It might have taken the same amount of time.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

Fuck that DEG, tow strap and a buddy!

      • deadhead

It’ s been a few years, but I used to live in southern NH and was commuting to Lowell (hi Joe!). It was the first snowfall of the year and I was coming home after dark. I remember singing “Casper the Friendly Ghost” to myself and then the next thing I knew, I had crossed the center line and was about to go over the edge. I completely flipped my Volkswagen Rabbit and while I was upside down I remember thinking “This is really cool. My mom is going to be very sad.”.

In this universe, my hood (and not the roof) hit first, with enough force to continue flipping my vehicle to where it landed on all four wheels snug against a tree. Unscathed, I pulled a unicycle out of the trunk and rode home in the snow. The woman I was living with was not amused.

And that’s why when you go for a sleep exam one of the multiple choices as to why you’re there is “car accident”. Whee!

      • DEG

        Wow.

At least you got through it alive.

      • Ted S.

My sister totaled her VW Rabbit on some black ice somehwere in the Southern Tier of New York driving from the Catskills back to Ithaca College. Apparently the unibody design made it more expensive to repair than the car was worth.

      • Mojeaux

A vintage VW Bug’s value is its floor pan that is part of the chassis. Get one with an intact floor pan and it’s worth quite a bit.

      • limey

Ladder frame FTW. Monocoque is too progressive and European. So un-American. Automobile chassis design should remain faithful to the mid-20th century clonky olde land yacht paradigm.

    Congrats on the PR.

It appears that HIIT is most beneficial when used sparingly. No need to do it multiple times per week.

As hockey continues, I’ve noticed that I am slowly becoming less dead afterwards. I still need to work on mobility, but I don’t fall down the stairs anymore.

Weights are still moving the right direction. I still am a little thicc, so I may need to adjust the macros.

Still walking every day, lifting MWF and playing the hockey on Fridays.

    Have a great week, Glibfitters!

    • egould310

How much contact occurs in your hockey league? Seems like getting banged up would be harder to recover from than the physical exertion.

      • Tundra

No checking, but it’s still a physical game. Lots of quick starts and stops, falls, etc. It’s hardcore HIIT, though. You are either going full out or sitting on the bench.

Far and away my favorite workout.

    • Chafed

If you’re still thicc then post a picture for Count Potato.

      • Tundra

Fucking midsection fat is annoying. I got really skinny, but then I was really skinny. Now I have some bulk, but the goddamn middle gets thicc, too.

At one point in my 18th year of life I dropped down to 130 pounds (stress, poor nutrition, etc.). I looked quite unhealthy, but I still had my effing love handles! No matter what else I’ve done in life, those things have been a constant. Farg.

  16. egould310

My schedule precluded me from running this week. I ran 6 miles this morning, for the first time since 03/13/21. But I’m at home this week and my schedule should work out better for running.

Wife and I have been fasting, eating low carb/keto stuff. That’s going well.

Thanks to the latest round of FedBux, I just purchased a very nice vintage 1966 Rickenbacker 450 12-string guitar about ten minutes ago. Running that baby through my Vox AC15 twin. Layer on some sustain and a smidge of chorus. I will achieve the jangliest guitar sound ever.

    • TARDis

I have been working out with a physical therapist as I am getting a cortisone shot in my lower spine in a couple of weeks. She has shown me a few new stretches which I really like and that compliment my current routine. Not too shabby!

Also, tomorrow I leave on a week-long road trip circling the northwest. As long as the weather permits, I will take pictures and submit a travelogue.

And on a final note, the wife and I adopted two cats today, a bonded pair. Right now they are chilling in the spare bedroom as they acclimate to the new living situation. I have thought about naming them Rice and Beans, or Rub and Tug, but those have all been shot down by said wife.

Different performance, different organist, different organ I have always preferred the performance by Jean Guillou (above) of the several recordings I have of this piece, but this is a very good performance and slightly better audio than the version above. The original recording of the Guillou performance was produced on Dorian (ha!) records, and has the dynamic range to do some serious damage to an unprepared audio system (and a listener’s ears).

Was so nice I didn’t even come here to see what foolishness was going on, but I’M back now.Had a weight machine in the house so I did do like 3×5 presses.

Last Thursday made it to the gym and got my “Ripptoe” workout in; new watch says I walked 20,000 steps one day, I think that’s a little off, I’m taking 25% off my step counter.

Umpired two baseball games Friday and Saturday, approximately 3 hrs each day.

Noticed at the “gym” (planet fitness, Hey, it gets my wife to go, even if its just for the tanning) that the bars on the stupid “free weight” machine are only 20lbs, I’d been figuring them as a regular 45lb, so I re adjusted and actually did the weight I thought I had been. It all worked well, except Military Press, had to take that down to 105. Them damn “saftey” machines are more fucking dangerous than just using a free weight bar; still got my cleans in though, didn’t know if I would be able to on that machine but i was able to.
