Baffert banned by Belmont. Long-faced Harry Kane says he wants out at Spuds. A HUUUUUGE soccer match will take place today at Chelsea. The Astros are allowing a full crowd with no masks starting today. And Canadian stadiums are still forbidding all fans from attending, because they simply can’t admit they were wrong.  And that’s sports.

OMWC’s hero

Russian Tsar Nicholas II was born on this day. He shares it with mathematician/philosopher Bertrand Russell, baseball player Babe Adams, filmmaker Frank Capra, tennis great and fashion icon Fred Perry, bluesman Big Joe Turner, musical tv personality Perry Como, Pope John Paul II, baseball HOFer Brooks Robinson, soccer player Nobby Stiles, HOF slugger Reggie Jackson, country singer George Strait, actor Chow Yun Fat, hockey great Jari Kurri, rapper Rob Base, actress Tina Fey, pitcher Rich Garces, and college football great Vince Young.

That was a decent list. Now on to…the links!

Diplomatic immunity….apparently won’t be revoked.  Man, movies are way better than real life.

Christ, what an asshole. But even assholes should enjoy due process.

FAA Chief Steve Dickson, in January, first signed the order directing the agency to take a “zero-tolerance policy” in unruly passenger cases — handing down stricter punishments without a warning, including fines of up to $35,000 and imprisonment.

Fuck you, FAA.

Killer Cuomo

Wow, this dude is way underpaid. Doing the math at 15,000 people killed in nursing homes alone, he’s only getting $340 per victim.  There’s not a Whitman in the country that would work at that rate.

This shit is absolutely laughable.

“This is the latest tool in our toolbox to maximize our state’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic,” Lamont said in a statement.

No, the tool you need to use is to cut off benefits to people who don’t go back to work.  Also, you’re a tool, Lamont.

That’s some nice police work, Lou. I guess its “bailiff work”, but the quote works better my way.

Chicago unveils its new slogan.

These numbers are astonishing. And not on a good way.

Good lord. These people are real life cartoon characters. Or what I like to call “retards”.

This man deserves a medal. What a hero.

I don’t play these guys often enough. Although I bet I get accused of playing them too often by putting them on just once.

Now get out there and have a great day, dear friends!

Morning, Sloopy — don’t let the critics get you down, you can be adamant in your music choices.

I’m sure the FAA would be happy to put due process in place. After they fine you, you can go to a FAA tribunal where they’ll decide if they fined you enough. Process!

    • DEG

That’s how the Clown Prince of NH handled violations of his emergency orders. He set up a special court run by the state AG.

    • Fourscore

      Too early for a pun

  2. Scruffy Nerfherder

Whenever Joe Glickman heads out for groceries, he places an N95 mask over his face and tugs a cloth mask on top of it. He then pulls on a pair of goggles.

He has used this safety protocol for the past 14 months. It did not change after he contracted the coronavirus in November. It did not budge when, earlier this month, he became fully vaccinated. And even though President Joe Biden said on Thursday that fully vaccinated people do not have to wear a mask, Glickman said he planned to stay the course.

I really should have gone into the tiger-repelling rock business.

    • sloopyinca

      These people are mentally broken.

      • juris imprudent

Willing to bet that to the very last one they have all forsaken god to worship almighty government.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        Yes

I have to assume that was the point for some of this crap.

      • Festus

I know a few that like to wear the mask. “Smile, Honey!”

      • mrfamous

So folks asked last year “even if you think the masks don’t work, what’s the harm?” From the article:

“‘This is great, I’m never going to get sick again!’”

Some people really have trouble with thinking through the full consequences of certain policies.

    • Tonio

I’m actually glad that there are such people. They will serve as a reminder of the hysteria and slowly become objects of public mockery. Hopefully this will help the majority of folks come to the conclusion that it was theatre of hysteria all along.

      • AlexinCT

HOW DARE YOU MOCK THESE POOR SOULS????

I just don’t get how messed up one needs to be Tonio to go through life as stupid as these people do..

      • juris imprudent

Hopefully this will help the majority of folks come to the conclusion that it was theatre of hysteria all along.

    • SDF-7

It puzzles me how these hypochondriacs don’t think about how if they’re right (and they are reducing their chances at more “normal” illnesses like standard flu, colds, etc.), they’re just weakening their immune systems so they’ll be more affected when they inevitably get *something*.

Like the kindergarten teacher mentioned in the article bewailing that the kids “share their secretions” — yeah, that’s how they train their immune systems, crazy person. I know everyone is big on the whole “colonizer” history thing — but you might remember part of *why* Europe wiped out most of the previous Americas peoples without even meaning to. Because those jammed into small houses to survive the winter, lovers of Scottish sheep had traded so many things back and forth they didn’t even notice when they shared it out with the natives. And that seems much more sustainable in the long term than going in the Matrix or being a nation of Bubble Boys. Ugh.

      • Pope Jimbo

I was talking with a buddy last night and when the lack of flu came up we both laughed at the idea that the masks had anything to do with it.

We both agreed that the biggest factor was schools being closed. In our experience every time flu hit our families, it started with one kid coming home from school with the bug and spreading it to the rest of the family.

    • Trigger Hippie

‘He has used this safety protocol for the past 14 months. It did not change after he contracted the coronavirus in November.’

      LMAO!

It obviously didn’t work for you, fella but don’t let that get in the way of your ritual.

        DON’T QUESTION HIS LIVED SCIENCE!

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

I never did any of that, and didn’t contract anything at all.

      • Trigger Hippie

Almost positive I had it in January 2020. I didn’t do any of that since and have been well as rain water. In fact, I haven’t really gotten very sick since then. A small cold or and a very mild flu over two winters. I usually get wiped out for days on end.

Covid was just what my immune system needed!

    • trshmnstr the terrible

I’m trying to figure out what TMITE is trying to do by profiling these people? Is it an attempt to shift them out of this behavior? Is it holding them up as especially virtuous? Is it anchoring in an attempt to establish a middle ground where masking is still a thin?

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

        Agreed.

        Normally TMITE’s scam is clear.

In this instance it is not.

      • Festus

Methinks the third one rings true. Wearing the mask means that you are a right-thinker but you already read that here.

    • db

I remember the days when a person running around in pseudo-medical PPE in public would have been considered a little strange at best, and someone to keep the kids away from.

There’s a time and place for extreme measures against contagion, and at the beginning of all of this, I was pretty cautious, but I quickly realized it was overblown.

The overreaction to this contagious disease has unmasked, or caused, even more mental issues among the public.

    • Old Man With Candy

Went to Walmart yesterday for the first time since they lifted their mask requirement. 50% unmasked, the other 50%… nearly all were double masked AND had a plastic face shield.

      At Walmart.

What was the point of mentally breaking American society I wonder?

I thought it was protocol that if you have had the virus you should not get the vaccine? There might be a timeline in that protocol, I don’t remember atm.

      • DEG

Nope, if you’ve had it, you can get vaccinated. Then you are super-duper protected.

A relative of mine and the relative’s spouse had Covid. They had symptoms. They tested positive. They recovered. They got vaccinated… in Ohio because Pennsylvania hadn’t opened vaccinations up to everyone.

    • blackjack

It did not change after he contracted the coronavirus in November.

So, it’s a really effective method? Or is he just tricking himself while virtue signalling?

Ambassador Peter Lescouhier previously apologized on behalf of his wife, Xiang Xueqiu, saying she “might have had her reasons to be angry at the way she was treated in that shop, but committing physical violence is totally unacceptable.”

Name doesn’t seem Belgian, doesn’t seem Korean. Wonder if there’s more to this than is strictly being reported.

    • Festus

      Red Flag!

    • Pope Jimbo

The wife definitely doesn’t have a Korean name. I’d bet Chinese.

I’m actually surprised the wife was able to escape without a beatdown by the other employees. In my experience you don’t fuck around with Korean shop keepers. They can get really aggressive if you cross them. Of course, Koreans get really aggressive in just about any situation.

The best I ever saw was when I was in Pohang for Team Spirit ’88. We were taking the bus from the base into town and a drunk tried to get on the bus. I mean a really drunk guy. He didn’t have the fare, but still wanted to ride the bus. Big argument started. Finally the bus driver stands up, grabs the drunk and launches him out of the bus. Launches, not pushed him out the door. The guy was so drunk he never even got his hands up and hit the sidewalk face first and just laid there. Bus driver sat down and just drove on. None of the Korean passengers batted an eye.

    • Pope Jimbo

According to a more local article the dude wasn’t in for stalking, but for driving his SUV right at a bunch of kids on an indian reservation.

The only trial scheduled for last week in Fargo’s federal court was that of 55-year-old Jeffrey Sahl Ferris, who faced charges connected to an April 2020 incident on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in north-central North Dakota. Court records allege he drove a Jeep toward seven children at “excessive speeds” and nearly hit them.

Ferris also assaulted a person with a 9-mm handgun, court documents alleged. It is not clear from records if he fired the gun. Ferris faced charges of assault with a deadly weapon, reckless endangerment, terrorizing and using a firearm in a violent felony.

    • sloopyinca

Scruffy, are you still struggling with inventory?

I’m curious because it’s getting tougher and tougher to find equipment in Texas and I was wondering if the east coast was suffering the same fate or if work was still down due to the panic.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        Yes

Lead times have increased to 6 months on some fairly standard items. I know Bomag is now estimating delivery dates on rollers to be in the 2nd quarter of 2022.

Parts are a total crapshoot. If it’s not on the shelf, lead times are indeterminate.

      • sloopyinca

Yeah, it’s about the same here.

The only silver lining is that when I do find inventory, it’s selling for a premium.

      • westernsloper

A new used equipment operation opened up here in the last six months(?) and he has stuff on his lot. Mostly farm stuff but a few construction pieces. I noticed him because he has a little front end loader that I want. I can’t remember the name of the place otherwise I would shoot a link to you. If they have a website.

      • sloopyinca

I wonder how bad the correction in values is gonna be when this bubble pops.
Although with OEM cuts in production over the last year and from a few years ago, they might not drop off much at all.

      • westernsloper

I was in the Massey dealer a few weeks ago. They also sell Polaris side by sides, four wheelers and snow mobiles. I was told they have no new polaris inventory for sale in the show room at all. Everything they were going to get this year has had a down payment put on. Everything. I guess a lot of people used their Biden bucks to buy new toys. Not sure if there were cuts in production in those lines but I wish I had a few used ones laying around.

        Giant if I remember correctly.

      • LCDR_Fish

Checking the GSA auctions, I am still seeing gear selling there – although often times the hydraulics are probably questionable depending on which agency owned it and how often it was used. Saw some gear listed with under 500 miles for mobile cranes, etc but 20ish years old IIRC…

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I’ve outlawed selling out of our rental fleet. I can’t replace anything in a timely fashion and missing rentals is a huge no-no.

Whether made of bedazzled cloth or polypropylene, masks have emerged as a dystopian political flashpoint during the pandemic. A map of states that enforced mask mandates corresponds closely with how people in those states voted for president.

Now do “infections” hospitalizations and deaths.

    • sloopyinca

These people really need to switch over to ziplock bags rather than cloth masks. It creates a better shield between them and the rest of humanity.

      • Surly Knott

We should start calling them “the pre-diseased.” Especially since, slurred or through a mask, it sounds like “pre-deceased.”
Even if it didn’t, I think ‘pre-diseased’ ranks up there at least as high as ‘temporarily able bodied.’ Remember that one?

Strongly agree. That, and the omission of the question mark, are two of my major peeves right now.

    • Mad Scientist

What’s unforgiveable is that the article doesn’t bother to mention which button he pressed, but that’s not nearly as important as all the quotes from people on the internet who think he’s just the bestest.

And my state is run by morons. As you can clearly see from the article about paying people a bonus to get a job. How many bonus checks can I get if I go on a “In Living Color” Jamaican jobs hunt? How about you stop paying people more to NOT work? Fucking assholes.

Lemme guess: “I’m too good for this place”? Yeah, that’s always a good look.

    • Raven Nation

His argument has always been that he wants to win trophies. Spurs still seem several steps away from that. Might depend who they hire as manager.

      • robc

Everton gifted them a spot into the Europa Conference League. That would be a trophy. and probably winnable too.

      • Certified Public Asshat

They are currently holding on to the second Europa spot, thank you very much.

      • robc

I stand behind my statement. Although the way West Ham has been playing of late (they lost to Everton even), Everton (and Arsenal) still have an outside shot at 7th.

I bet Everton beats Man City on the final day and ends up tied for 7th and loses out on goal differential.

      • PieInTheSky

They all want to win trophies but few are willing to take any pay cut to do so.

      • rhywun

      • Certified Public Asshat

Because he has wanted to win with Tottenham, he’s been there since he was 11. The club was stale after losing to Liverpool in the CL and they haven’t refreshed enough since then.

      • Raven Nation

And he extended his contract through 2024. BBC story says Kane believes he has a gentleman’s agreement that he can leave this summer. Doesn’t mean anyone will pay what Levy asks.

      • rhywun

I can respect that, even if I am not a fan of him or the team lately.

      • juris imprudent

He apparently wants to stay in England, so Spurs have to sell him to one of the [truly] big clubs, so MU or City most likely.

      • Certified Public Asshat

Chelsea has the most money and would be best fit, but a very unlikely sale (fuck Chelsea). He likely ends up in Manchester if one of them ponies up the money, otherwise with Real and Barcelona broke, he has to stay.

      • juris imprudent

Can’t see any way that they sell him to another London club, and Liverpool doesn’t seem in play.

In interviews, vaccinated people who continue to wear masks said they are increasingly under pressure, especially in recent days; friends and family have urged them to relax, or even have suggested that they are paranoid. On a recent trip to the grocery store, Glickman said he was stared down by a man who entered, unmasked.

Meaning 6he guy walked past him and rolled his eyes.

      • Nephilium

As I mentioned over the weekend, I was at a brewery on Saturday and a couple sitting next to me said that they thought all the restrictions were over. I replied that was only for the fully vaccinated people.

He asked, “how could you tell?”

“They’ll have snazzy armbands they wear all the time.”

The couple started laughing, and the bartender almost lost it while ringing up a beer.

    Total Acreage

      • Pine_Tree

Same answer, though; neighbor doesn’t just mean resident. It means owner. Current residents fit your calculations one way. Owners who may become resident later fit a different way, but should be consider. And you can’t hand-wave away BLM; they’re a neighbor too. Where are you looking? I have seen some sort-of interesting 40ac plots in Wyoming, but you have to be careful to make sure they aren’t too low-lying. Water on the property can also mean “swamp” at the wrong times of year, if they’re in the flood plain of a creek.

      • LCDR_Fish

I’m looking at 40+ acres across Wyoming and elsewhere – wetlands status is a consideration (esp given my current backyard struggles). I doubt “swamp” is a legit concern in dry wyoming, but I’ll be asking about it. Preferring something with at least minor sloping to work with for the construction design, etc.

      • Fourscore

        Building permits, Zoning

I was denied a building permit on 40 acres ’cause it was zoned green space. Had to pay to go before the Zoning Board, at some considerable cost. Got a variance, then pay the shakedown artists for permits. (Well, electrical, septic, building)

Sometimes we like to pretend they don’t exist or matter, but they’re a very big deal – good and bad. Culture, number, location, borderline issues, etc.

      Adjacent properties.

Is there some form of government owned land adjacent to the property?

It shouldn’t matter, but come hunting season it does. Lots of characters “get lost” or “lose track” of their position and “accidentally” wander on to private property.

      • LCDR_Fish

Yeah, a lot of these are adjacent to BLM. Guessing I’d put up boundary markers either way. At this point, I’m making and updating the list based on availability – then, next summer hopefully get out and walk around on some of them to get a better feel.

      • Semi-Spartan Dad

Lots of characters “get lost” or “lose track” of their position and “accidentally” wander on to private property.

Putting up a couple miles of field fencing topped with barbed wire was expensive but cut the poaching down by quite a bit. Some asshole still cuts through the fence though to get his atv on the property.

    • Semi-Spartan Dad

Internet availability unless if you’re going with Starlink.

Unless if you have a blue-sky budget, be aware that there will probably be only a handful of large acre properties available with a nice house. When we bought our current 30 acre property with a standard house, well, pond, barn, etc, there were only five properties in our 40 mile search radius. Of those, only one (the one we bought) wasn’t either a dilapidated shack or impossible to navigate during winter.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the market for similar properties in Alabama, and there’s usually less than 7 or such properties available at any given time across the entire northern half of the state within our budget.

      • LCDR_Fish

Appreciate the tips. Cell coverage is my consideration there (most likely satellite otherwise) – although things could change moving forward. I’m not specifically looking for land with established houses although I do see a couple nice ones listed in AK. My long term dream has been to buy and then build – an earth-covered home to spec. (formworks, etc).

        I’ll wait and see though.

My mom (who lives with two of her sisters) doesn’t have cable service out in her neck of the boonies, but they do have cell service. Their internet is via their cell hotspots. In fact, that’s how my daughter will have internet when she moves out.

      • Mojeaux

Although now that I’ve typed all that out, I can see that might work for an individual, but it wouldn’t work for a whole-house situation. It certainly wouldn’t work for us, with the Roku and all that.

      • LCDR_Fish

BTW…is it possible to get a device that will scan all cell frequencies? I had to switch providers because AT&T was awful on most bases I’ve worked on, but Verizon had passable service.

iPhones cover all carrier bands. You are, however, limited to whichever carrier’s SIM card you are using at the time.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

If you have internet service, you can use most modern cellphones thru the WIFI connection for voice.

Alternatively, you can set up a directional antenna and a cell booster for phone service around your house. I’ve done it for a couple of people.

I think that’s covered partly in utilities (current) as well as the access considerations, but I am looking in the text descriptions – ie. some are “lumber only, no permission to build roads”, etc.

      • Rat on a train

I know someone that got hit with road access to an interior parcel. It wasn’t a problem for decades until it became profitable to develop the interior parcel.

      • LCDR_Fish

You mean having to grant access to someone else for their property? It’s a consideration when I get closer to building I guess. Some of these actually have county roads cutting across them already – not perfect, but better for yearlong access.

      • Rat on a train

Yes. The right to build an access road across your property so they can connect to public roads.

I read a paper a few years back that talked about meshing wifi networks together to get around any filtering/censorship on the regular internet. The author argued that there are so many wifi networks that it would be possible to mesh them in a way that you could establish big networks without ever hitting a telcom or other infrastructure where The Man could block traffic.

Basically the guy was saying that revolutionaries could pretty much keep a network up and running in a major metropolitan area no matter what the government tried. It was fairly interesting.

Mesh networking isn’t anything new. Lots of protocols are out there that could be used easily to pull it off.

I hadn’t thought of the proliferation of Amazon devices. A ton of IoT solutions use mesh networking because it is much more efficient to deploy in the field than a pure wifi or wired network.

The never ending quest for newer, more terrifying hobgoblins

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ biggest fear as a parent isn’t gun violence, or drunk driving, or anything related to the pandemic.

    It’s social media.

And specifically, the new sense of “brokenness” she hears about in children in her district, and nationwide. Teen depression and suicide rates have been rising for over a decade, and she sees social apps as a major reason.

At a hearing this March on Capitol Hill, the Republican congresswoman from Washington confronted Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Google CEO Sundar Pichai with a list of statistics: From 2011 to 2018, rates of teen depression increased by more than 60%, and from 2009 to 2015, emergency room admissions for self-harm among 10- to 14-year-old girls tripled.

“It’s a battle for their development. It’s a battle for their mental health — and ultimately a battle for their safety,” McMorris Rodgers told the tech leaders.

But when she pointed a question specifically to Zuckerberg, about whether he acknowledged a connection between children’s declining mental health and social media platforms, he demurred.

“I don’t think that the research is conclusive on that,” replied Zuckerberg.

Social media is hurting the childrens!

“The correlational evidence showing that there is a link between social media use and depression is pretty definitive at this point,” said Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University. “The largest and most well-conducted studies that we have all show that teens who spend more time on social media are more likely to be depressed or unhappy.”

Correlation is not causation, and one area of further study is whether greater social media usage leads to poor mental health outcomes or whether those who are depressed and unhappy are drawn to spend more time on social media. But researchers also worry that not enough government funding is going toward getting objective data to answer these sorts of questions.

Here’s my somewhat unsolicited take: The ramblings of a madman is what follows.

Settlers are dicks when given leeway from Israeli courts (see guy who said on camera if I don’t take your home someone else will. This after Israeli courts said housing complexes in east Jerusalem belonged to some Jews rather than the Palestinians who had lived there for some 50 years), Palestinians react by throwing tantrums and destroying property belonging to likely uninvolved settlers. This provokes counter attacks by Israeli settler paramilitary; one of which was at the Al Aqsa mosque (one of the holiest sites in the regions for Muslims), Palestinians and mideast media report it was an attack by the IDF (almost guarantee it wasn’t). This event gets international attention and Hamas begins lobbing every fucking rocket they have in those bunkers into Israel. Israel does what it always does, and drops bunker busters all over Gaza. Iran pumps more shit in because they want full scale war to gain more control over the west bank and Gaza and to undo the peace agreements made with Israel during the trump administration. So long as the rockets continue to flow, Israel will continue to drop bombs. They won’t escalate to full scale war, though, for fear of reprisal from the countries they have signed peace agreements with. So long story short, Trump is currently why full scale war has been averted thus far, but I think Israel is sick of the shit and kinda hopes they can regain full control of Gaza and the west bank and tell the rest of the world to suck it. Most in the middle east don’t actually like the Palestinians either.

People say what CNN wanted to hear

Several days since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said fully vaccinated Americans can — for the most part — ditch their masks, more places are announcing changes to their mask policies, or doing away with the requirement altogether.

    =======

But experts are worried about the rapid changes, and say that without verification systems, parts of the country are now having to rely on an honor system to ensure unvaccinated Americans are masking up — a system that some say, does not work.
“I say this respectfully to the CDC but we really need to get back to a point where it’s encouraging (people) to get vaccinated and more of that focus rather than celebrating our newfound freedoms,” the mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, told CNN on Monday. “Because the honor system just ain’t working here, I don’t think it’s going to work in a lot of parts in this country,” Mayor Quinton Lucas said.
Now, the mayor said, local officials are worried about how to move forward.
“It creates these sort of challenges where, how does the store clerk check it? How does our health department actually enforce any rule at all? So, while I respect many of the jurisdictions that are trying to, I think, really have adherence to the CDC (guidance), it’s a challenge for us,” the mayor said.

Oh, no. Freedom be damned. How will we know whose neck to put the boot on? Those cheaters will leave a trail of dead bodies in their wake.

    • WTF

What difference does it make? If someone is unvaccinated and unmasked, it’s their choice and their risk that they choose to take, it doesn’t involve anyone else, so fuck right off.

It’s a win, but how could it even be a question?

The Supreme Court unanimously rejected Biden administration arguments in a case from Rhode Island that police should be allowed to enter homes without a warrant to seize handguns.

The ruling in the case, Caniglia v. Strom, court file 20-157, came May 17. Oral arguments took place telephonically on March 24.

The case came before the high court as President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats pressed for aggressive new restrictions on Second Amendment gun ownership rights, including controversial “red flag” laws, which allow gun seizures from law-abiding gun owners with limited due process, in the wake of highly publicized deadly mass shootings in March at a Boulder, Colorado, supermarket and at Atlanta-area spas.

With just over 3 percent of Canadians fully inoculated against COVID-19, a growing number of America’s northern border states and communities have stepped up to offer excess vaccines to Canadians.

The cross-border vaccine offers have come after frustrations grew in Canada over the pace of arrival of the large numbers of doses the Canadian government has ordered. Even as provinces ramp up vaccinations this month, several remain under severe public health restrictions enacted to overcome a variant-driven wave of COVID-19 infections that has strained hospitals.

Jut what we need- another princeling

Andrew Giuliani, the son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, announced Tuesday that he’s officially running for governor of the state in 2022.

The 35-year-old, who has never served in elected office and has limited political experience, launched a campaign website Tuesday with little information other than his biography.

“For New Yorkers, Andrew helped to preserve thousands of MTA jobs by facilitating CARES Act funding,” Giuliani’s website says, referring to his time working as an aide under former President Donald Trump. “He also worked with the Treasury Department and Health and Human Services to ensure that the $3.9 million that had been inadvertently taken out of the 9/11 First Responders Fund over thirteen years and three administrations was completely refunded.”

Giuliani had been hinting at a bid for weeks, telling The Washington Examiner last month that he thinks he has a chance of winning.

Fuck you and the legacy you rode in on.

Just came back from voting at 0930. There was no line, only three voters at the table and one who strolled in after me. 80% masking. Outside, there were three candidates for school board, one of whom was masked.

It reminded me that in PA, as a voter registered in a party other than the Democrat or Republican, that I have no say in the closed primary (unless some idiot from the local LP decides to run for School Board as a Libertarian). Closed primaries are mostly BS. They perpetuate the two (or mono) party system. If there were a legitimate “none of the above” option in the general election (that would result in a new election or an empty office if it won), a closed primary would make more sense, but otherwise, it is simply a way for the two major parties to maintain their stranglehold on the electoral process.

    • DEG

Wreckers and Hoarders, we’re coming for you!

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen called on Tuesday for business leaders to pay higher taxes to support government stimulus spending, and backed stronger labor unions and lowering barriers to foreign competition.

In a speech to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Yellen reiterated the White House’s intent to raise taxes on corporations and the highest earners as part of an ambitious infrastructure spending plan.

The administration also is seeking a global corporate minimum tax in an effort to stop companies from relocating their bases to avoid higher levies at home.

“With corporate taxes at a historical low of one percent of GDP, we believe the corporate sector can contribute to this effort by bearing its fair share: we propose simply to return the corporate tax toward historical norms,” Yellen said in prepared remarks for the Chamber’s Global Forum on Economic Recovery.

Yellen added that President Joe Biden’s American Families Plan will be paid for in part by a “series of tax reforms that ensure that wealthy individuals are paying their fair share.” She said the administration is also looking to stop tax evasion that has “stacked the deck for decades against responsible and compliant taxpayers.”

      • SDF-7

What… like free candy from a van or something?

      • db

I think it’s best to teach children that the only candy worth taking is candy that you have to pay for. If it’s being given away, it can’t be any good. Value for value.

будь-якого was the only word I didn’t understand.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

Russkiy is the only one I do.

      • grrizzly

I was making fun of the modern Ukrainian language. By the way, маст хев above stands for “must have.”

      • creech

I’ll just bet Trump understands Russian.

    James Dean’s transaxle

How am I supposed to set my beer on that?

    • Pope Jimbo

For us non-car guys, what exactly is a transaxle? I know what an axle is, but I’m not sure what car part gets confused and identifies as an axle.

      • Tundra

        Lol.

        Axle, transmission and differential assembly.

      • Pope Jimbo

        differential assembly

That is where you dangle one of those bitty bugs that Scruffy linked to above from our rear view mirror?

  59. The Late P Brooks

Transaxle is an all in one deal. Transmission and differential and drive flanges driveshafts to wheels all in the same housing.

    • R C Dean

These euphemisms are getting pretty automotive.

What did you expect them to do?

The group was searching with metal detectors when they found an old artillery mortar round covered in rust. It appeared to be very old, but also looked as if it could be live, according to a news release from the Wadena County sheriff’s office.

One of the individuals called the sheriff’s office and shared that they were at the Nimrod Bar with the mortar.

The hunters had placed the mortar round in their vehicle and brought it to the bar to show others, law enforcement learned.

Members of the Brainerd bomb squad responded to the scene

      Brainerd has a bomb squad?

      • creech

Can never be too careful, what with all those white supremacist insurrectionists running wild. I’m surprised that police depts. don’t have A10 Warthogs yet.

      • Pope Jimbo

You don’t want the hillwilliams out in the sticks to have a bomb squad? I bet you don’t want them to have a SWAT team either.

        Big city elitist.

Noted scientist Jane Fonda is here in Minnesoda to help us rubes understand that pipelines are bad.

Fonda also admits the pipeline workers and their families are hostile right now.

“But we are not against those workers,” she says. “It’s like with the Vietnam War; it wasn’t the soldiers’ fault.”

In fact, she says, like it or not, the fossil fuel industry built this nation.

“We should thank the workers for doing such dangerous, dirty jobs,” Fonda says, “but help them understand this is a new era for the salvation of the planet. If the fossil fuel industries hadn’t lied to us for 40 years, we could have started the transition decades ago, and it could’ve been an incremental, gentle transition. But now we have a very small window of opportunity, and we can’t leave the workers behind, but we have to move away from fossil fuels.”

    • Pope Jimbo

Her lab partner Winona LaDuke is also quoted:

She knows the ultimate reason behind this latest dumb idea—“Enbridge’s money poisons everything”—but she doesn’t understand why so many people who should know better are on board. According to LaDuke, oil pipelines don’t make sense anymore, economically or ecologically.

“It’s such a bitter pill for our tribes,” she says. “This is Walz’s equivalent to the wall: an infrastructure project that is not needed.”

Wonder if she’d like to explain to the Easterners how they could have avoided all the gas shortages if they’d only gotten rid of their pipeline earlier.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      it wasn’t the soldiers’ fault

Yeah, you’d probably be better off not bringing that up.

I see the Bidens and Harris’ released their tax returns. Joe and the Doctor gave about 5% to charity, and Kamaltoe and the Second Man gave less than 2%.

Yet both will continue to lecture us about compassion and concern for the poor and unprivileged.

    • LCDR_Fish

You do know that personal charity is worthless and only govt can truly provide for the people.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

“Really, if the lower orders don’t set us a good example, what on earth is the use of them?”

      I ❤️ Oscar.
