A glimpse at the Abyss – Browser History

What follows is a brief glimpse into the abyss, otherwise known as a selection of my web history; Granted pretty sure I can’t compete with this crowd for the abyssal nature of browser history. Work links have been filtered as has redtube.com – you don’t need to see those filters (hint: Kamala, Midgets, Latex, Barrels of Lube).

Recent purchase of hunting rifle optics led me down a rabbit hole of optics, mostly on Vortex and Leupold. Ended up with this little fella. Yes I’m a cheap bastard.

Spending a lot of time at Landwatch (and Zillow). filterList = {“size”:>=10, “HOA”:FUCKNO, “CC&Rs”:”MINIMAL”, “state”:[“Arizona”, “South Dakota”, “Idaho”],  “wish”:”Florida wasn’t so… Florida”}.  BTW, “FUCKNO” is new quantum boolean type that’s just even more FALSE than FALSE.

I finally broke down and started getting Rogan off Spotify. While full episodes were appearing on YouTube intermittently, that seems to have been cut off pretty efficiently now. Plus I’m trying to stay off of YouTube as much as possible, preferring Odysee if the content is available. Signed up with a fake, temp email. Since Spotify doesn’t support VPN connections, I basically stream on separate audio device (muted) and capture with  Audacity to listen to later. No video, audio only.

I spend some time on Odysee, especially Bret Weinstein. Dark Horse podcast is in regular rotation. Recent one offs include Kory  and Malone + Kirsch, both of which were banned on YouTube.  JBP, MP, Tom Woods among others also make regular appearance.

There are things I still “need” to use YouTube for. Been watching the Tour de France highlights. US Olympic swimming trials. The highlights and races are about perfect, you can avoid all useless interviews, Rowdy Gaines hysterics, and the sheer stupidity of jersey presentations with masks. It would be nice to see the full coverage of some of the longer climbs in the Tour and such, but c’est la vie.

Also on Youtube, the Metabolic Classroom with Bikman. Various other Keto/Carnivore/politics of nutrition stuff as well.

I’ve also read through Covid Care as well. Just reading, haven’t looked into online prescriptions or anything. Honestly not too worried even if I get it, but maybe have Iver on the shelf just in case.

And finally, have this running in the background.  Less so recently as it hasn’t been as dramatic as the past.  And man, Iceland sure is cloudy and rainy sometimes.

Speaking of Tom Woods, I’m on his mailing list; got an email Tuesday, he has pneumonia. Haven’t heard since, hope he is recovering.

      Another covid case.

      • Ghostpatzer

Tom’s been rather vocal about his disdain for covidmania, I really hope this is not true.

    Landwatch – thanks.

Are you using the new audacity with data collection, or are you using one of the earlier, less intrusive versions?

    • PutridMeat

Currently older version. I’m assuming my OS will rebuild with the phone-home patched out. If not – I run it out of a shell script that blocks it’s access to the network prior to starting anyway, so not too concerned either way.

  5. The Late P Brooks

    Landwatch- interesting.

The more I think about, the more I lean toward buying a “tearer-downer” (or, better, a chunk of land with a mobile which can be dragged away). Power, water and septic already in place.

I have my new shop/home mostly roughed out in my head.

  6. Old Man With Candy

We do a LOT of YouTube., especially since we gave up Netflix and all network TV. Much foreign language cooking videos. Geek electronic stuff for me. Music for both of us. And best of all… great old TV shows not available elsewhere, like Norm, TV Funhouse, and Amos ‘n’ Andy.

I’m on a geek electronics forum with Sensei. And many many visits to Judith Curry’s website.

My porn browsing is highly limited due to my paranoia.

      Hey now!

BTW – my Nvidia Shield TV plus this application has been glorious for YouTube.

I bought a 1.13 acre plot of desert lank in Elko County Nevada some 4 years ago for 1000 bucks. It has an amazing view of the Ruby Mountains and is only 20 minutes or so from I-80 and the nearest Walmart. I camped on it 3 times but haven’t been back to it since. I have paid about 45 dollars in property taxes since buying it. I get fairly regular offers to buy it usually in the 600-800 dollar range. Recently I was super stoked because the latest offer was 1200 smackers. Hah. I’m not selling. And I’m not telling where the bodies are buried neither.

    • waffles

I do regret not buying the whole 60 acre hillside for about 20k when I had the chance. I like Elko, good skiing and decent people. Only 3 hours to SLC, 3 hours to Boise. That’s positively urban compared with some of ya’ll.

      • Old Man With Candy

        How hot/desert is it there?

      • Ownbestenemy

Elko is about at at 5100 elevation and average during summers is high 90s, with it rarely going above 100. It was one of our stops on the way to Idaho from SoCal when I was a kid. My dad said it was a rest stop but really it was to feed his gambling additction and probably a couple vodkas..

      • Old Man With Candy

Nice! I could deal with that. Cool nights because of the altitude?

      • Ownbestenemy

So says historical data. Very high desert/semi-arid environment. Looks like nights even during summer dip down low. So a high 90s day with 50s-60s at night probably. Not bad.

      • R C Dean

        Sounds very similar to Albuquerque.

I want to move to the Sacramento Mountains in New Mexico. But wifey isn’t too sure.

      • blackjack

I’ve been around/near there in September. It’s not far from Bonneville. The weather in Sept. is excellent. Sunny and around 75 degrees. One year it rained. Still comfortable. Never anywhere near PX heat.

      • waffles

Ownbestenemy nailed it below. While the summers aren’t bad, the winters are super cold. My property is at 5700ft looking across a valley at a bunch of peaks that are over 11k. There are skiable lines well into May in the upper parts. The most famous one is a couloir called “Terminal Cancer”.

      • Ownbestenemy

Used to love the drive through Elko and Eli, all depending on dad took us through the Great Basin. Typically it was through Eli/Wells/Jackpot, but every once in a while he would take a different route.

      • Ownbestenemy

Oops..Ely. Whatever, they are deplorable up there and I am allowed to disparage the name of their town.

      • waffles

It’s a real struggle to imagine anyone getting slighted about that in those parts.

      • blackjack

In Ely, there’s a huge lot which contains somebody’s personal Studebaker collection. I was getting gas in my bike and noticed a dilapidated 50 something Hawk. I walked over to see it and, over the berm was about a 100 various Studes. I still have pics somewhere.

      • blackjack

I used to ride to Vegas and then turn left and go all the way up 93 to Wendover. It’s a great ride once you get past Vegas. Sadly, I couldn’t find any way to avoid the interstate until after Vegas. The 93 is all farms and hills. Only bummer is there a very few gas stops, so you gotta plan it out before hand, on a bike anyway.

      • waffles

I always gaze up at the Rubies and think “yep, I intend to die in those mountains”. I figure that’s still 4, shoot maybe even 5 decades off but it’s good to have a plan.

Spent a couple days in Winnemucca a few years back. Was doing some work on a hay deal. Real nice people. Hawks, eagles, coyotes, cougars, elk, hares, too. Got 8 inches of snow daily while I was there. Beautiful. Cold as fuck, though. I-80 was impeccable.

Not that I was naive enough to think anything else would possibly happen, but when I reported an ethics concern in my company that was smack dab in the middle of the targeted technologies they were focused on analyzing, I didn’t expect them to be so open about it. “Oh, that’s not a concern… University of [insert some Canadian city here] wouldn’t ever abuse this info.” This despite the info I provided showing that they were planning on identifying and deprogramming anti-vaxxers on Twitter.

      • Rat on a train

It’s OK. Like Obama, they personally vetted the list.

    Thanks for land watch!

I have a bunch of stuff set up on Zillow, but I don’t particularly like that company and would gladly switch if there was a viable alternative. I won’t touch Realtor.com because I refuse to support the Realtor association. Haven’t checked Trulia in a while, but it was markedly inferior last time I tried. Redfin doesn’t operate in the area we’re looking, but I’d use them if they did.

Thanks for this article. I took Weinstein to be saying “audacy” and why the fuck would anyone use that??

  12. R C Dean

This is interesting. Checking out the total population-adjusted deaths for Sweden, they are the lowest except for Ecuador (which makes me think they are probably, in reality, the lowest on the planet). They’ve had single digit deaths per day for nearly six weeks, with a number of zero deaths per day. While Sweden had some ‘Vid restrictions, if memory serves, they were very light. Sweden held to the Old Ways on pandemic response, and the results are . . . excellent.

    • rhywun

Any result other than “dramatically worse” is vindication of everything the “covidiots” have been saying for over a year now.

      • R C Dean

What’s interesting is that I thought deaths per 100,000 would converge as the pandemic played out. But that’s not really the case, and Sweden is a massive outlier. Unless there is some other explanation (and I haven’t seen one), its hard to see this as anything but a complete repudiation of the lockdowns. Based on this data, the lockdowns not only did whatever collateral damage they did, they are correlated with worse results on the pandemic. And I think you can build a similar correlation (although likely not as strong) just with US states.

      • waffles

This is interesting. I wish we were honest enough to learn from all of this. That is a real and fervent wish.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

Stick people in enclosed environments with less Vitamin D and no exercise. Hmmmm… what could be wrong about that?

      • rhywun

Makes sense since most people are catching it from the people they live with.

And yes, we will never be honest about this stuff.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

Here’s the reality that I’ve really struggled to accept. It doesn’t matter. Sweden could have multiple times better outcomes, and it won’t matter. We’re so far past the ability to have anybody discuss this in good faith and amend their opinions based on reality that it’s impossible to conceive of a situation where we fall back to that good faith paradigm.

Maybe there are a handful in the margins who have been ill informed but have kept an open mind, but to the extent that this message needs to get broad circulation to gain traction, there are government, media, corporate, non-profit, and psychological institutions standing at the ready, eager to do everything they can to quash the slightest momentum toward a shift in public sentiment. Beyond that, a large majority of the US (and I’m sure the West as a whole) have descended into a quasi-religious mentality regarding everything in the public sphere. It has become so unfruitful to discuss such things that most are taking the preferred narrative circulated by their cohort as an article of faith.

The zeitgeist is formed by force these days, and unless you’re willing to cram this information down people’s throats by force, nothing will change.

        /pessimistic rant

We’re so far past the ability to have anybody discuss this in good faith and amend their opinions based on reality that it’s impossible to conceive of a situation where we fall back to that good faith paradigm.

Yup. We are talking about mandating the vaccine for our employees. My colleagues (at least the ones willing to speak up) cannot conceive of a good faith, non-crazy objection to the vaccine. If I weren’t so attached to my job, I could easily walk them through a rational risk-benefit analysis that leads to “No, thanks. Not for me.” But I lack confidence that I wouldn’t be labelled an anti-vaxer and suffer . . . adverse consequences (see above, “no ability to discuss in good faith”), so I keep my mouth shut.

You can replace vaccine with DEI and it’s the same. Crossing the DEI activists is done at your own peril. Ignoring the DEI activists eventually catches up to you. As a result, I’ve made a niche for myself critiquing data gathering/analysis methods and making sure inclusiveness initiatives aren’t only gender/race based. Employer can’t critique me for not being involved. Employer can’t critique me for being unmutual. The best they can do is call me a wet blanket because I don’t let initiatives preconceive a conclusion and measure data until they find some that can be used in support of the conclusion.

Being the devil’s advocate, Finland’s deaths per 100K of population were significantly lower.

      • R C Dean

You are correct. They fell off the bottom of the chart when I was looking at Sweden. Sweden is around 142 total deaths per 100K, and Finland is at around 18 deaths per day, which is far and away the best results on the planet. I wonder what might account for that?

      • Timeloose

        Vodka consumption per capita?

      • R C Dean

Erp. Should be “Finland is at around 18 total deaths per 100K”.

      • Ownbestenemy

I think that is one of the more frustrating parts of all of this. Every human being on the planet is being treated exactly the same in terms of this virus except where it may result in political/power gains. Science my ass.

      • The Other Kevin

Correct. But that’s a big government solution. One size fits all, no customization. Just like education and 100 other things.

      • Pope Jimbo

About six months ago, there was some noise about Sweden doing worse than Norway and Finland and that was PROOF that Sweden fucked up by not locking down.

The thinking was that those countries are all fairly similar and thus the differences were all because of lockdowns working. In depth analysis though showed that in the few years prior to the Rona Sweden had way less flu deaths than their neighbors. That meant that there was a lot more “tinder” for the Rona to burn through.

Basically in 10 years, the excess deaths will all end up being about even.

Kevin Roche is close to what I was talking about but I can’t be bothered to look further.

  13. The Late P Brooks

When asked how to increase Alabama’s vaccination rate, Ivey said, “I don’t know, you tell me. Folks are supposed to have common sense. But it’s time to start blaming the unvaccinated folks, not the regular folks. It’s the unvaccinated folks that are letting us down.”

She added, “I’ve done all I know how to do. I can encourage you to do something, but I can’t make you take care of yourself.”

the unvaccinated folks, not the regular folks

And there it is. If you aren’t vaccinated, you aren’t “regular folks” and can be discriminated against and abused.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

It’s coming and it’s coming soon. Open discrimination against those icky anti-vaxxers is being normalized before everybody takes the plunge into outright oppression this fall.

      • Tundra

I thought the unvaxxed are closer to 50%

      • Ownbestenemy

Ah yeah. 59% fully, 50% with at least one jab.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

Almost 60% have received at least one dose

49% have gotten a full set of doses.

      • Akira

And Dave Smith pointed out on his podcast that many of the people who got vaxxed didn’t really want to do it but had to get it under some kind of duress (college/job mandates, extreme social/family pressure, etc.)

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I think you can safely assume that the current unvaxxed are opposed to mandatory vaccinations.

And there will be a percentage of people who have been vaxxed who are opposed as well.

So support for mandatory is going to be well under 50%.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

So support for mandatory is going to be well under 50%.

The polls, of course, will be cooked to the point where mandatory vaccines appear to have 70%+ support.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        Well yeah.

But this isn’t a soft issue. There are going to be some extremely motivated opponents to this, myself included.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

Yes, but the “Nobody I know voted for Nixon” effect is strong right now.

I don’t mean railcar oppression. I mean the firings will start and the pressure to deny service to unvaxxed will ramp up and they’ll make their big push for vaccine passports.

      • Ownbestenemy

Yes agreed. That is the oppression that will be borne out of this. I guess those old shops can dust off their Whites Only and Colored Enter Here signs and just use a sharpie to update it.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

They better be ready for a rough ride, because I don’t think it’s going to go the way they think it will.

      • Nephilium

Yeah. A couple of the board game group meetups have started back up (one of the larger ones is tomorrow). For my own mental health, I’m staying away at the present. All of them are doing the no mask if fully vaccinated stance… and some people are still masking up even after being vaccinated. I’m also pretty sure that the girlfriend has talked about my stance on the vax on FB, and I’m not about to lie or wear a mask.

My fuse on this shit is too short to deal with someone trying to lecture me while I’m trying to relax. I’m hoping the weather holds up so I can go ride a bike instead.

      • Ownbestenemy

Hmm. We have a birthday party to go to tomorrow. I wonder how that will be. The couple is not opposed to vaccines, but not vehemently against those who are. She is deaf and hated the past year.

The Senate Armed Services Committee has approved language in its annual defense policy bill that would require women to register for the draft.

Equipment trailer from branch store blows a tire on interstate. Go out to service with spare, wrong hub and tire size. Swap trailers and bring one with three tires in for service. Turns out it has 15 in rims on it when it should have 16 in. Few years back they bent an axle and downsized the rims when fixing because the 16 in were rubbing the fenders. Thus cutting the load capacity of the trailer. They could have just bent the damn fenders back into place but they decided to get smart and save $200 on tires instead. Idiots.

      • Ownbestenemy

Hmm. So just using telemedicine and saying you want some for some reason. I guess it is time to jump on to my raspberry pi and open wifi to request a doc visit.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

You’ll have to use the Medici app for their services.

      • Gustave Lytton

Why bother with doc in a phone? Just go to Tractor Supply and pick up some Agri-Mectin.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I did. I’m trying to switch to a prophylaxis prescription now. Not quite as smooth as the first time around. Pharmacy didn’t get the scrip yet.

      • Ownbestenemy

Hmmm..cash only or HSA doc near me. Unfortunately, he is out of the office until August. I guess I will wait.

Though with my wife’s dog grooming business, we could probably find some way to tap into the vet supplies like Q mentioned.

It’s named after the fucking statues on one of the bridges to the Jake. The Guardians of Traffic.

It’s a slap in the face to the fan base that’s stuck with them for over a century. By coincidence, I’m going to be at the game tonight, so we’ll see if they announce anything about the new name at the game. The girlfriend already changed her mind on what shirt she’s wearing to the game, she went back to an Indians shirt.

      • Nephilium

On the other hand, I’m going with my full shitlord shirt.

      • Gustave Lytton

That’s the purported inspiration. It’s obviously due to the childish superhero obsession of pop culture over the past twenty years.

      • The Other Kevin

So why didn’t they incorporate the statues in the logo?

      • Ownbestenemy

Cause they look native, dressed as if they are in the Pantheon guarding the white man’s travels?

      • Nephilium

Because they’re trying to keep as much of the Indians color and iconography they can (the block C, the colors, the similar font). Besides, they got burned on the last mascot…

They also haven’t announced any merch yet, but the local clothing companies are jumping all over it. I’m waiting for one of the companies to update their “It’s Still the Jake Shirt!” to include the Indians in some way… but I doubt it’ll happen.

      • blackjack

Nose swab. I’m going to have to get myself tested. My kid got all scared and teary. I had to explain that he was fine and it wont really hurt him. I’m thinking I might take him for a second test too. I have had some congestion, but it passed and I’m feeling better the past two days. Probably had it.

      • Ownbestenemy

Yeah if we suspect our kids have anything, they are getting lab work done, not the swab test. I know our doc will balk at that, but I don’t trust something that you can make say what you want it to say by hitting it with more and more cycles.

      • blackjack

Yeah, I just don’t really care if we have it or not. Certainly, my kid will be fine, and likely that’s why I’ve been slightly ill. I just have to deal with my work’s paranoia about it. I’m at the end of my travel quarantine and now it’s getting stretched for this.

      • Ownbestenemy

I get that. I have to still wear my mask at work cause I am not taking the shot. Though I have ventured a few times without it. Might cost me my job but pulling 200′ of cable through the ceiling is not fun while wearing it..so sue me.

      • blackjack

        The upside is, natural immunity!

My wife got the first shot, but skipped the second. I have no shots. My kid’s only eight, so no shot for him either. I’m waiting to hear back what work wants from me now.

I’m 55 and my lungs are all beat up. If the minor illness I’ve had for the last few days is all this has got, I am even less scared than I used to be, which was not at all.

      • Ownbestenemy

Fake News! Misinformation! There is no such thing as natural immunity…only Man…er…Personmade vaccines can provide immunity!

      • Ghostpatzer

Natural immunity? I thought that was unpossible.

Pretty sure I had it in March 2020, well before testing was available. Riding crowded commuter buses and subways in NYC every day, it was unavoidable. 3 days of horrible cough, could not even work from home. I’m 68, with sleep apnea and mild COPD, so am one of those “at risk” folks, if I hadn’t been sick back them I’d probably get the vax, but don’t care to take that risk now (not a few co-workers have gotten quite ill from the vax). Right or wrong, that is a decision best left to the individual.

“The vaccines are a good risk for some and a bad risk for many.”

        Individual judgement cannot be allowed.

      • Ownbestenemy

Kinnath that is true and can’t speak for everyone here, but that is known that for some, it is a terrible affliction. From what I have seen, everyone here pretty much would have accepted the direction of protecting the weak and ill while allowing the healthy to move about their lives.

Even then, I have seen severely ill people contract it, beat it and move on with their lives. Maybe they were outliers, but the approach we have taken as a country on a whole has been much more disastrous and shows how a top-down, one-size-fits-all approach is absolutely terrible.

      • blackjack

I don’t disparage anyone for getting the vax themselves, and I don’t for a minute think the ‘vid is not real or a threat to some people. I have never been scared of getting it myself and now, I feel like I’ve had it and won. I’m going to get my nose swab this afternoon and likely will have to have more quarantine from work. I’m sorry for your loss, Kinnath. Please be sure and know, I’m not belittling that.

      • kinnath

I am a walking-talking-poster-child for those at high-risk for Covid.

However, I would recommend anyone under 50 of normal weight and health to stay the fuck away from the vaccine.

“…this is a rant post. Because I am angry. SO angry. Anyone seeing this post that has not/will not get vaccinated just do me a favor and unfriend me. Because I do not need “friends” that are too damn ignorant and selfish to do 1 simple thing to show they care about anyone other than themselves. The sweet boy in this picture, that I waited forever for and that I love more than I even thought possible, can not get vaccinated yet. I spent the weekend in the hospital watching him struggle to breathe and thankfully that wasn’t from Covid. This time. But he’s been tested about 8 times now in his little life. The 5th graders they are about to cram into the classroom (yet maintain 3 feet between?…) I may or may not be able to return to, can not be vaccinated yet. But anyone older than 12 can. And if everyone that could just would then we wouldn’t still be in this position. And I wouldn’t be so mad. So go get the damn shot. Or get out of here. Thanks.”

This is a rant from a friend that I’ve known since high school. I feel like this “pandemic” has empowered individuals to try and control what other’s are doing while making themselves feel important.

      Yes. “You body, my choice”

    • Ownbestenemy

Yes. The propaganda on this has been one of the most successful in my lifetime. Even better than 9/11. The government and by extension, the media, has done a bang-up job on persuading the masses that COVID wanders throughout the air we breathe, held back by a cloth or your door or if you are sitting or standing, and what drink you have in your hand. People believe you have a high percentage chance of landing in the hospital, tubes shoved down your throat if you catch it. People believe that packages, mail, and fruits have COVID lingering quietly upon them, ready to jump onto you. People believe that merely walking on the same side of the street as the unclean will cause you death.

They will disregard the data from the past year if the government and media outlets say so. Never mind there were no giant outbreaks in schools. Hey what about that motorcycle rally…or Disney World, or the GOP convention, or the sports that finally had fans, or on and on and on.

Anything put out contrary to that above is met with unpersoning.

Don’t mistake my placid facade as anything but that… a facade. As soon as the comfort goes away, the anger will take over, and it won’t be in the form of some stupid rant on social media.
