Saturday evening links of fall

by | Aug 28, 2021 | Daily Links | 304 comments

Ahhh.

What I really noticed about a week and a half ago is that the weather suddenly changed, and it became fall in two days. I will not miss the heat.

Hey! What a really screwed up week it’s been for the good ole’ USA. Let’s see what we can find that doesn’t make people want to jump into a hot bath and open up their wrists.

Well, this is taking us in the wrong direction. Do I hear running water?

ISIS-K(sounds like a breakfast cereal) is going to need two new guys to do the lunchtime kabob run.

Batten down the hatches, Gulf coast Glibs.

Alan Page doesn’t have enough, “notability”. FFS.

Polish Glib? There’s a tasteless joke in there somewhere, I know you guys can rise to the challenge.

I demand video evidence.

Do it one more time so you can nut punch Sandy Koufax beyond the grave.

I mean seriously, if your bands shtick is soaring guitar riffs, your songs are going to sound pretty much the same. This isn’t a bad cover though.

Still out riding fences on the whole vax thing. I’m going in to see if I get a med exemption on Tues. My wife is starting to push me to get shot up. I might just have to. Not without an acceptance of liability from the company, mind you.

  2. LCDR_Fish

    It’s all how you count…..

    https://www.weatherbug.com/news/Tropical-Activity-Spikes-In-Caribbean,-Atlantic

Elsewhere in the central Atlantic, Tropical Depression Ten formed 800 miles east-southeast of the Leeward Islands. This poorly organized storm is moving northward over the open waters of the central Atlantic. Meanwhile, another disturbance east of Bermuda is being watched in the central Atlantic for tropical development. Neither system poses a threat to land at this time.
Remember, the last weeks of August and first weeks of September are the peak development time for tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Grace and Henri were the seventh and eighth named storms of the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season, respectively.

While this is well off the record pace set last summer, with “Laura” and “Marco” forming on August 22, it is in line with to slightly ahead of the pace of other recent years that saw upwards of a dozen named storms on the year.

Considering that “tropical depressions” are now named – regardless of whether they develop further, I think this weather inflation is getting stupid too.

In all seriousness though – no hurricanes touching the US until the end of August – how does that actually rank for the last few decades?

    • Ghostpatzer

Prior to the availability of satellite observation, such “storms” could not be included in the statistics. I wonder why the historical records for tropical storms cannot be adjusted in a manner similar to what “climate scientists” do with temperature records. OK, not really.

  3. westernsloper

    Lesbians play softball?

    • Sean

      I’m shocked.

    • Ghostpatzer

Who knew, right? I thought softball required bats.

      • C. Anacreon

Fond dumb memory: back in college days, as I drove past a girl on the softball team, walking home from practice carrying a Louisville Slugger, my roommate in the other front seat rolls down the window, and shouts at her in his most insinuating voice, “Hey! What are you going to do with that bat?!”

  4. rhywun

Fall is a long way off here but today we’re getting a sneak preview of fall temps between heat waves. I only noticed it when my AC cycled off this morning and I was like wut.

    • Nah, just Yusef

It was pretty ugly today, it looks like 70’s for the next week, no too bad,

    • egould310

I’m going to be in Ft. Edward, NY for the week of September 20th. Hope to catch some Fall fireworks while I’m there.

      • rhywun

I don’t know where that is but good luck!

      • egould310

50 miles north of Albany. Then we’ll spend the weekend in either Manhattan or Brooklyn. The bext week in Asbury Park or Red Bank.

        A whole lot of NY/NJ.

      • Sean

        Eeeeewwwww. ?

        Have fun!

      • egould310

I’ll be working during the day. But dinners and drinks will be top notch.

And the weekend in NYC should be cool.

      • rhywun

I guess you’re not one of the unclean because dinner and drinks in NY will be a bit of a disappointment otherwise.

      • egould310

The Gould household is fully vaccinated. We were losing work otherwise. I’m not particularly happy about it. But we had no other option.

So I guess we at least get the privilege of dining out.

      • TARDis

It’s okay. I took my first jab last weekend. I got sick … of arguing with my wife. If there are complications, well then [redacted]. I shit you not.

      • Hyperion

“The Gould household is fully vaccinated.”

Well, the same here. So look, comrade. I have this petition here. It’s to put the anti-vaxxers in prison. You know, they aren’t like us, I mean human and all. So let’s round em up and put them in the cars. Send them off to the camps. Can I get your signature here?

    • Fourscore

We had a serious drought with the higher than average temps this summer. About 10 days ago the maple leaves started changing color but not to red, more brown and dry looking. Ferns dried up, aspen (poplar) and birch leaves yellow and falling. It seems about a month early. I don’t think the colors will be as radiant as usual. Most recently we’re getting the rain as per normal and the grass/weeds have regenerated.

The lack of wild flowers this summer really curtailed the honey production, 50% or more. Honey Harvest goes on but some of the folks will have a little less work, still enough though to get everyone’s hands sticky.

Temps have gone back to seasonal, comfortable. Good to see the rain to go into the fall/winter. Maybe we’ll see more snow this winter.

Spud, your cover picture is beautiful, is that local?

      • Nah, just Yusef

Odd, we have had a Hot, Green summer, and the ferns ar bury your disc thick, I’m waiting fot the color, I think I’m South of you, and it makes a difference up here I suppose,

      • Spudalicious

The front page is in Boise,

      • Zwak, jack off, all trades

We had that here as well, cooked my wife’s garden.

And after that week, everything turned back to normal.

    • C. Anacreon

99 degrees here in the SF East Bay today, made worse by a thick layer of low-hanging smoke, courtesy of the wildfires around Tahoe. This is getting to be a regular feature of late summer in Northern California. It didn’t use to be an annual event, but it sure seems that way now.

  5. Nah, just Yusef

Good version, I was hoping for a Chick lead singer, that would be awesome!

  6. creech

For all you Jeopardy fans, the schadenfreude is on-going. Now, Ken Jennings is out because he once commented that it was a real shame to see a Hot Woman in a wheelchair.
As Ken is a Progressive, the blow-back brings a smile. Also, Kareem has joined the chorus plumping for LaVar Burton to be the host, because apparently America still sees black men as dumb jocks and not intelligent lovers of history, art, science, and whatever other categories Jeopardy is presenting.

      • Tulip

        That would be awesome!

      • rhywun

        I would watch that.

The last time I viewed Jeopardy was maybe 15 years ago and it was unwatchable there were so many stoopid questions.

      • Mojeaux

I think that’s a brilliant idea because the man is brilliant.

      • Nah, just Yusef

        I can do that!

    • rhywun

There’s no other way to see it. It’s the bottom line.

      The science is settled.

      And that bio. ??

Could this be a parody account…?

  8. Shpip

Do it one more time so you can nut punch Sandy Koufax beyond the grave.

The rumors of Koufax’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

Also, unlike football, where top players almost invariably come from big time college programs, baseball types can sometimes sneak up on you. Two of the best MLB pitchers of the last few years (Sale and Jacob DeGrom) played their college ball at Florida Gulf Coast University and Stetson. Nice programs, to be sure, but not exactly a Florida / FSU / Miami-type threat to advance to the College World Series every year.

I don’t know if that means that every college scout missed on Sale (DeGrom grew up in Deland and wanted to stay home), or if he was just a late bloomer.

  9. Nephilium

It’s Saturday and I don’t have other plans… so here’s the link to the Zoom/Happy Hour/Drunken ramblings for tonight. As usual, I’ll be kicking it off at 20:00 Eastern.

    • DEG

Thanks Neph. I’m heading out tonight and won’t join. Have fun folks!

The article pic at top is gorgeous.

    • Spudalicious

That was taken by a professional photographer over on the east side of the state. That picture was taken at 6,000ft. I have a 36”x42” hanging on the wall.

      • Hyperion

Geez, I’m sorry man, what state? Forgive me, I’m old and shit.

      • Spudalicious

        Idaho? Spudalicious? 🙂

      • Hyperion

Y’all surviving the Californite invasion OK so far?

Sean, on the last thread you asked for pics of the rifle I received today. It’s the rifle in this thread. I guess the thread posted decided to sell the rifle. The listing on Guns International is already gone.

I guess the poster decided to sell the rifle to the gun shop I bought it from.

Nice DEG, I picked up a BSA no. 12 .220 long rifle Martini target rifle a few weeks ago. I have never come across a trigger like that. If it’s 1 pound factory I wouldn’t be surprised.

      Yeah, he’s toast.

      Sorry, Brazil.

      • Hyperion

The electronic voting system is nothing like the mess we now have here. You HAVE to go to the polls, mail-in ballots are strictly forbidden, they check your ID and I mean it has to be you or you are not voting. The machines are not online.

If anyone is toast, it’s the USA, now a 3rd world corrupt voting system.

      • rhywun

Ah. Yeah, when I hear “electronic voting” I think our laughable joke of a system.

      • Hyperion

Brazil’s voting system is very secure compared to ours, as of now. Don’t think that the lefties there are not paying attention and want to follow our example. They are and they do.

What I really noticed about a week and a half ago is that the weather suddenly changed, and it became fall in two days.

Yup. First frost here last night. It’s rainy this time of year, but the next 3-4 days are supposed to be sunny and beautiful. So – choring!

    • Hyperion

Well, you know, Alaska. It’s not like we lower 48ers. It think avg first frost here is around Nov 6.

      • Animal

When I was a little tad back in Allamakee County, I remember mid-late October for first frost. But back then the last glaciers were still receding, so…

      • Hyperion

Yeah, when I was in Northern IN, the first frost would come as early as first week of Oct.

I still remember that article you wrote about sledding off the hills there in the summer and the dude who got you to go first, lol, and the groundhog I think, LOL. That was fucking epic hilarious.

      • The coolest vaccine-free BEAM in the world™

We had a frost warning last week, but it never materialized; typically we see our first “hard” frost prior to September 15th, which can be glorious if we then have a prolonged warm Fall (hard frosts kill all the biting insects so the few weeks of nice weather afterwards are wonderful, and grills/BBQs are roaring all over town…).

    • Hyperion

Animal, you ever been to Juneau? I’m just going by pictures, never been to Alaska, but My God the pics are stunning.

      • Animal

Not yet, but it’s on our ‘to-do’ list. I want to see the whole panhandle eventually. Supposed to be some great fishing thereabouts.

      • Fourscore

We were in Juneau a few years ago, we scheduled week there. After 2 days we were ready to leave, changed plans and went to Kodiak for the remainder. Juneau is small, we did the museums, glacier, T-shirt shops, government and were ready to go. Kodiak was more interesting (but no bears). We rented a car and drove to the end of every road out of town

This is when I hate Texas. From now until mid-October. I love the fall in the Midwest. Down here, it’s liable to still be A/C season until almost Halloween.

I don’t hate the summer being hot (I don’t like it, but I don’t hate it). I hate the summer being long. September should be transitional between heat and cool. October should be a bit nippy as the sun goes down.

And calm your tits, for fuck’s sake!

    • Chafed

Finally some taxpayer funded research I can feel good about.

    • Nah, just Yusef

We are Global! I’m on my last one tonight, headed North Tomorrow!
      /Cheers!

    • MikeS

Morgan James is a smoke show.

      • Spudalicious

All three of them. But her? Yeah.

    • Spudalicious

      I love that video.

      • MikeS

I addition to the hotties singing a cover far better than the original, the bass solo…duo?…is pretty cool, too.

  24. mikey

Well, it looks like the world’s strife has even infected even our little backwater cow town. The biggest hardware store in town (we were blessed with three) has closed. Jut like that. The owner announced this afternoon that the store was closing and all the employees were laid off. No warning. Just “Bye”. Our local FB channel is all a twitter. Lots of speculation as to why. My money is on the auditors were closing in. Sorry about the now unemployed, but it’s kinda nice living in a place where a hardware store closing is big news.

  25. kinnath

Spent 4 hours pouring mead for the uninitiated this evening.

The best part was a middle aged lady telling me she loved me.

    • Nah, just Yusef

“The best part was a middle aged lady telling me she loved me.”
      That sounds good to me,

      • kinnath

        Highlight of my day.

      • kinnath

As things were shutting down, I ran into the same lady. She introduced me to her husband and then reiterated that she loved me.

        Alcohol is the great equalizer.

      • Nah, just Yusef

        Quite,
        Cheers!

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        (G-rated, meant for kinnath)

      • Toxteth O'Grady

I am shure I would be shimilarly shororal in the same plaishe.

  26. DEG

I cut my night out short.

There’s a married couple that are regulars at the bar I was at last night. We’ve chatted a few times. They’re good people.

I found out the husband had died recently.

I hardly knew them, but it really bothered me.

I decided to cut the night short.

    • grrizzly

A friend’s husband died last summer at the age of 51. Way too early.

      This bothers me, too.

      • Nah, just Yusef

When I was 53 I lost 4 different friends, same age, And Wendy was 51 as well, way too young,

      • DEG

        Ouch.

        Too young.

      • DEG

        That’s too young.

I think the husband was about that age.

    • DEG

      At tonight, not last night.

    • Zwak, jack off, all trades

Yeah, I get you DEG. I lost some good friends over the last few years, and the average age was 50. I know it’s going to start happening, but it is still too soon.

      • Nah, just Yusef

Back at ya Zwak, Hold Fast!

  27. grrizzly

Vladimir Putin said that people should not be threatened with dismissal for refusing to get vaccinated

“We can only defeat this dangerous epidemic together. Pressure, after which people can lose their jobs, is unacceptable. We must persistently and respectfully convince people of the need to do this, explain how important it is to get vaccinated to preserve their own life, health, and their loved ones, show that this vaccine really works, and reduces the risks of complications” the President explained.

    • trshmnstr the terrible

We live in a world where Vladimir Putin respects me and my rights more than the sitting US president does.

      Hmm….

      • Gustave Lytton

If taken at face value. I can see a darker reading of those words.

      • rhywun

        Right?!

      • DEG

        Heh.

        Yes.

He worked his way up through the KGB.

He probably strangled people to death with his bare hands before he ate lunch.

  28. Brochettaward

Where the white bitches at? Apparently not in the Zoom.

  29. MikeS

“What’s the lesson of Afghanistan. Maybe it’s that everyone from the giant dorm room b—- session that is the internet should take a good look at what real oppression looks like,” Maher continued. “Ask your maid, ask your Uber driver, ask the Asian woman giving you a massage. … America may not be the country of your faculty lounge and Twitter dreams, but no one here tries to escape by hanging on to an airplane. No, we wait ’til we get inside the plane to fight – and only because they cut off the beverage service.”

    — Bill Maher

    • Brochettaward

Something tells me that Maher would be singing a different tune if Trump were in the White House. He’d have a far different lesson he’d be taking from Afghanistan.

    • rhywun

I don’t have a maid, an Asian woman giving me a massage, a faculty lounge, or Twitter dreams. I do have the occasional Uber driver, I guess.

  30. Gustave Lytton

WTF is Dementia Joe doing personally issuing warnings that the airport is likely to be attacked? Is this an attempt to preemptively avoid being blamed for such an attack?

    • Chafed

I doubt there is much of a plan.

    • DEG

      Beautiful.

  31. Nah, just Yusef

Every time I think I’m OK I take three steps and fall, this is getting bad,

    • hayeksplosives

Dbleagle, I just played that and it made me get up out of bed and dance like an idiot by myself.

In my fantasy world the dance was beautiful and tomorrow is wonderful and full of potential.

      • hayeksplosives

        Holy shit, that was awful.

How did anyone survive the seventies?!?

I was a kid so could just go to the creek and catch crawdads, but damn, some of y’all were grownups.

      • Ted S.

Although for 70s dance, I’ll guess this might be more your type of music.

      • hayeksplosives

Solid Gold for the eighties win.

(Let’s admit it was essentially the Late Seventies)

        https://youtu.be/jPwahcScwOw

      • hayeksplosives

GT, that was fucking hysterical. I had not seen or heard of it before.

        I am crying.

        TY.

      • Gender Traitor

YW. IIRC, that was his first hit. The “Best” one I linked is a sweet ballad, IMO.

I have to stop typing now. I’ve run out of acronyms.

      • Tres Cool

Do we know she wasnt dancing on the ceiling ?

And no, Im not linking Lionel Richie.

      • hayeksplosives

        That was wonderfully obscure.

Wasn’t there a Fred Astaire thingy with that same setup?

      • Ted S.

That is Fred Astaire, with the hand vac edited in.

Both the original movie, Royal Wedding, and Lionel Richie’s “Dancing on the Ceiling” music video, were directed by Stanley Donen.

      • hayeksplosives

That one I confess I kinda like.

      • Ted S.

But then it’s not the 70s.

      • rhywun

Yeah, it’s actually a decent song. 80s FTW

      • hayeksplosives

I have now typed and backspaced over my words more times in my life for this comment.

        I love you guys.

        As you were.

  32. Tres Cool

    suh’ fam

    • hayeksplosives

      Yo dog!!

No tall cans here, but mebbe a Bloody Mary in a few hours!

      • Tres Cool

I worked all night, so its well-past 5 pm in my head.

      • hayeksplosives

Do you have room in your head for me to crawl in, curl up, and take a nap?

Cuz, damn, do I ever need it.

      • Tres Cool

        Take a nap ?

Oh, honey- you’d get the “bonus plan”.

      • hayeksplosives

Lol! From what I am given to understand from the Glibs, I’m “your type”!!

        ?

      • l0b0t

#metoo I’m drinkin’ Bourbon and making cheeseburgers, while I wait for the kids to wake up so I can get them breakfasted.

    • Not Adahn

Match this morning. Was going to wear the Glib colors to it, but because of the rain and mud I’m thinking not.

Should be a well-attended one, with some good shooters. The stages look fun, like KF&G usually does.

  33. hayeksplosives

My beloved kitty cat is now on the bed “making bread” on my boobs.

Does that count as getting some action?

    • Ted S.

      Is it turning you on?

      • hayeksplosives

        Who wants to know? 😉

But no, it doesn’t. It’s just cute.

      • Ted S.

I was obliquely suggesting it counts as action if it turns you on, and doesn’t count if it doesn’t turn you on.

      • hayeksplosives

I gotcha, and for the record I think you’re right.

Kind of a Rule 34 thing,

But my kitty kneading my boob is just plain cute to me.

    • Gender Traitor

My kitty keeps insisting on hopping up on my lap when I sit down on the toilet.

I may have to tell my employer I’m retiring early because I need to spend more time with my cat.

      • Tres Cool

        You could always stand.

    • Tres Cool

I was never breastfed. My mom said she only liked me “as a friend”.

  34. Zwak, jack off, all trades

Insomnia seems to be ripping through my household like corona through a rest home. My wife gets it late at night, while I get the early AM version.

    Is the suck.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Ah, sorry. I know the feeling.

91X Resurrection Sunday (80s tunes, more or less) begins in 90 minutes! http://player.listenlive.co/36281

      • Gender Traitor

I may have to check that out. SiriusXM’s Symphony Hall has my usual Sunday morning go-to, Vox Choral, but it’s not doing it for me right now.

Or maybe I’ll just switch over to the ’80s channel. /flaunts satellite radio privilege

      • Toxteth O'Grady

My mom has that in her car. My ould dashboard would have to be eviscerated to accommodate a Sirius sub.

Alt 80s, I should specify. The Cure, the Smiths, DM, et al.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        *33, Richard Blade 😉

Someone on the net said she hired RB for her husband’s bday party or summat (TM Jeff Spicoli) and that he couldn’t have been nicer.

      • Gender Traitor

I don’t have it in my car – my commute is only long enough to keep an ear on local weather and traffic. I have an obsolete little portable radio with the home kit, which I keep in my office. (I have to keep the radio lying flat on its back now so the dial & selection button don’t fall off.)

At home, I stream it online.

      • Zwak, jack off, all trades

Heh, that was what all the girls I hung out with in high school listened to. Class of ’89. But I was getting early Chilli Peppers, Mary’s Danish, fIREHOSE, Clash, Cult, and so on.

        Punk, Skate, Thrash.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

My dad had a little pager-like Sirius dongle for a while.

“Oh captain / There are doubts…” Wish I’d heard of them earlier.

    • Gender Traitor

But this is the best time of day at Glibs! ?

      • Zwak, jack off, all trades

        Beast Coast privledge.

I woke up around 3 best coast time.

  35. hayeksplosives

I know y’all aren’t icky “conservatives” but damn, Mark Steyn has it going on today.

    https://www.steynonline.com/11648/performance-art-with-no-performers

Until January 6th, the highlight of Michael Byrd’s “law-enforcement” career was leaving his loaded Glock in a congressional men’s room and paying no price. He “serves” with the grotesquely misnamed “Capitol Police”, which is not a police department but a praetorian guard – a personal security team for the praetors of Congress. Lieutenant Byrd shot and killed Ashli Babbitt, a 5’2″ unarmed woman, because “she was posing a threat to the US House of Representatives”.

And that was mark just warming up…

      • hayeksplosives

Excellent recommendation. Bookmarked for future reference.

Was this, I found myself wondering, the result of woolly thinking on the author’s part? This seemed unlikely, given Srinivasan’s successful career as a philosopher, an occupation that demands verbal precision. Rather, the cumulative impression is of intentional evasiveness.

The closer I get to Resignation Day, the more Frank I get with my staff.

A dozen Hayek and other great thinker books are currently “checked out” to my underlings.

    • hayeksplosives

Holy shit. When I linked the Steyn article I had only read about half.

Now I’ve read the whole thing. Damn.

  36. l0b0t

Regarding Robert Crumb. He and a couple other underground comix authors have a band, The Cheap Suit Serenaders, that do olde timey Americana music. Here is their brilliant cover of <emI Had But Fifty Cents

    • Gender Traitor

That was wonderful, l0! I may just let YT feed me more of it…
