Labor Day has come and gone but it’s still hot as hell in inland southern California. I look forward to the hot days and cool nights we typically get this time of year, but we aren’t there yet. Ah well, soon enough.
This week at the gym I couldn’t find an open squat rack, so I headed outside. My gym has one in a small courtyard along with other workout equipment. It reminded me of my workouts when gyms were allowed to reopen during the pandemic. This was both good and bad. Bad because it reminded of the recent shitstorm we’ve been through. Good in that it reminded me I found a way to get it done under less-than-ideal conditions.
After years of working out solely inside, I had about three seasons of working out in the great outdoors. The contrast has given me perspective. For gym work, I like being outside if I get to the gym early and the equipment I need is outside. It often isn’t, but when it is, then I want to use it. If it’s dark out or the sun recently rose, then I know the temperature will be fine, the sun won’t be in my eyes, and the cool air keeps me comfortable. The only part of it I don’t like is doing any sort of warmup when it is genuinely cold. None of this is to say I don’t like lifting weights inside. The only time I don’t like it is when the gym gets hot during summer. Early workouts for the win.
Aerobic work I much prefer to do outside. I like the changing scenery and feeling of motion from running. Even when it’s raining, I get an odd feeling of satisfaction from having gone out and gotten my run in. Jumping rope just belongs outside. I don’t know why, but it does. Treadmills, stationary bikes, and elliptical machines quickly get monotonous.

On a completely unrelated side note, I saw a TV ad for an HIV drug. It was just a short time ago (at least it seems that way to me) that AIDS was going to kill us all. I wonder how long it will be until we see ads for some therapeutic for Covid-19 and we all shrug.

Very good, field work is essential. Friday #3 Ethan and I played a round of rollers only, except for putts obviously, it was quite instructive.

I do most of my exercise – such as it is – indoors, either at the Y or on my own treadmill, surfing the Web or reading my Nook all the while. Climate control FTW.
Today’s exercise, though – weightlifting – was done outdoors. TT &I hauled twelve 50# bags of pea gravel for our impending fire pit from Lowe’s to the car to the back yard, and I’ll have you know I did at least half of it. Miraculously, even though I forgot to put on my gardening gloves, not only did I not break a nail, I didn’t even chip the polish of my brand new mani.
I am strong like ox.

Inside unless I’m doing yard work. I pay good money for a gym membership. I expect to be able to train inside.
The music selection brings a little nostalgia on. I remember my older brother getting that album and my copying it from him onto tape.
Weight is up, but my diet has been shit. I’ve started recording food again. 265.6 lbs at 26.5% bodyfat.
My aerobic capacity is coming back. Lifts are progressing. My trainer pointed out some problems with my deadlift form which I fixed. I also have to do more flexibility and mobility work.
I’ve been pressing again. The trainer wanted me to try seated presses. The problem was unracking the barbell from the seated press device (for lack of a better word) at my gym puts my back in a bad position. So, I’m standing and pressing like Rippetoe wants. However, I have trouble keeping my core braced for all the press sets at the weight I’m using. The trainer has me on a high volume program. I can handle more weight than I’m pressing at lower reps and keep my core properly braced to protect my back, but this weight at this volume? No. I’m caving and lowering the weight next time I press.
Atilis gym owners have a book about pushing back against the NJ governor. I’ve ordered a copy.
I might get to stop in at Atilis this upcoming weekend. I’ll be in the Philly area for a dance event. I’d like to get a trip to Atilis in while I’m down there.

More people pressing. Taking me out of the number of people pressing, it’s about even between men and women.
I saw a good looking woman bench press 125 lbs for a triple. She’s not the tall thin woman I mentioned in a previous “seen at the gym”. Different woman this time. Unfortunately, I remember her being one of the masked up zombies back when masks were required.
I saw a good looking woman pin bench pressing 95 lbs with bands for extra resistance for a lot of volume. I said to myself, “I bet she’s working with the same trainer I am.” I didn’t talk to her since she had her headphones on. I mentioned it to the trainer I work with a few days later. He said, yes, that’s one of his other clients. She’s a powerlifter. Her 1RM for bench press is 205 lbs. She’s got two kids.
I see more people pushing and pulling sleds in the turf area. The turf area changed after the renovations at my gym. The material is different making it harder to move a sled. The turf area is also longer. For a while after the renovations, I was one of only a handful of people pushing and pulling sleds. I mentioned that to my trainer, and he said, “Yeah. Lots of people of been complaining that it is too hard to push sleds on that turf.” I said, “So, drop the weight and build yourself back up. It’s what I’m doing.” I wonder if we’ll start having competition for the sleds on the turf area now like there used to be.
I was going to use the Hammer shoulder press machine. A good looking woman was using it with two 45 lb plates (one each side). With the volume work I’m doing, I said to myself, “That might be more than I can do at this volume.” and decided to walk away instead of asking to work in. I continued on with some arm work, and came back later after she went away. You know, despite my arms being fatigued, I worked up in weight and came really close to having two 45 lbs plates (one each side). Maybe I should have just asked.
I will miss GlibFit next week since I’ll be in PA. That is sad, but I’ll be dancing and maybe shooting.

I hate seated press. I can never find a rack position that doesn’t hurt. So I prefer standing and doing the SS method as well.
Sleds are probably the best HIIT ever. And so useful in real life, particularly in places with snow!

Be careful. One day long ago, I drank for a month. That did not end well.
I find it easy to quit for a month or two. But then for some reason, I make up for the lost 30-60 days in a day or two.

One of the parks near my house recently completed a pretty heavy upgrade to their hiking trails. They used to be almost constantly wet, with swampy conditions in some parts after a storm. On of the maintenance people told me they’ve spread almost 60 tons of gravel or crush and run and I have to say they did an excellent job. I’ve been running a 3.5 mile loop three times a week since early June.
Pull up station, few extra pieces of equipment, and some creativity gives me a home gym in my backyard for strength and conditioning. I’be lost almost 20 lbs. since May and am four pounds away from my goal. I even saw the shadow of an ab in the mirror.
Today’s outdoor exercise was putting up the last parts of the fence. I lost less blood to the wire than I did to the mosquitoes. I can haz killing frost nao?
Frost will not kill the mosquitos. They’ll just hibernate and save up energy for the next warm day so they can suck you dry of the rest of your blood. This is why northern climes are not fit for human habitation.
BOTH! I haven’t quite finished setting up our in-home gym downstairs because I cleaned and moved all 1300+ lb of weight, and then my wife changed her mind about where she wanted it. I’m proud I said nothing about it.
I’m starting to work out a little more regularly. Ice hockey twice a week helps. Running out of weed has also helped – no herb means no “vase” (as in, my wife’s lingo: “I think you left your vase outside on the patio last night.”)
Then the guy across the street asked me to start going to the gym with him and a couple of other guys in the neighborhood – at 5 AM. I agreed even while I inwardly cringed. Starts tomorrow.
So, of course my team captain can’t make a hockey game tonight and asked me to sub in for him, and I can’t say no to hockey. Shit – it’s good for me.
My weight’s down about 5 lb and hopefully I can keep the trend and get down into the 180s and stay. With a long range goal of getting in the upper 170s – that would put me ~10% BF.
Yard work is a great weight to burn some cals while being productive and not really working out. It’s a sneaky way of getting in some good, functional movement and also keeps me out and away from all of the snackies in the house.
Keep at it, Glibbies! No better defense against the ‘Rona – and other “co-morbidities” – than movement and some clean eatin’.

Today I’ve been wandering around trying to figure out how much of my tiredness can be blamed on the altitude. I was 7000-7500 feet above sea level, and since descended to my hotel at 6500 feet. My house is 53 feet above sea level.

If they did know they were gambling, there would be more thought put into their actions…like exercising outside in the thunder storm.

I managed to make two weeks only eating eating every 24 hours. Now I’m back to grazing. But I am grazing on steak, corned beef, hard cooked eggs, chicken, pork chops, bacon, shrimp, ahi, spinach, and Brussels sprouts. I haven’t had carbs in 3 weeks and the insane craving for breads has passed.

That’s great progress. OMAD is a very good stepping stone to longer fasts..if interested. To beat the Jonsein’ for carbs it takes 2 or 3 wks no carbs. The hard part is over but you have to remain vigil.
This morning, we had Pop and Fresh croissants with our coffee. We do that about once a month. Went out for a typical hike and afterward I was starved. Never happens when we hike fasted (coffee only).

I loved doing the no carb thing—sweets are my weakness and if they are off the table im able to stay very disciplined. Problem was after a few weeks my breath would be rotten. I tried everything, drank tons of water, took parsley seed oil, more veggies—nothing worked. I could brush my teeth and minutes later my wife would tell me its smells rotten again.
Something interesting about ketosis is, once you become real fat adapted your body uses/prefers ketones as fuel and those ketone urine tests won’t indicate levels of ketosis because there is none being expelled. Probably halitosis will go away…

A good week this week. Got my lifting in and felt pretty good. I wasn’t sure about having the stuff here, worried that it would be too easy to slack. Turns out it’s just the opposite. No excuse since I only have to walk downstairs. Plus, since I have no one to talk to I get done much faster!
A buddy of mine was in town this weekend so we went hiking in the mountains and then drank a few beers. That’s ‘active recovery’, right?
Thanks for the DLR. I had that album and loved it. I don’t give a fuck what anyone else thinks, Dave was flat-out fun. I saw the last VH tour from the 8th row, couldn’t hear for a week and it still ranks among the top 10 of all my concert experiences.

I completely get geography may have a big impact on whether an outdoor workout is feasible. Of course, that occurred to me after I submitted the article.
I couldn’t care less what DLR does or doesn’t do behind closed doors. I think there is a reason the world kept turning after Rob Halford announced he was gay. Music lovers care about the music. Show up for your show, put in the effort, and entertain me. If you do that, then I’m satisfied.
As for DLR specifically, he was the right man, in the right place, at the right time. The music he created with VH was terrific. I’m sorry they gave up the “brown sound” but that’s beyond my control. Dave’s solo stuff was a real mix but some of it was the same type of fun as his VH days.
I slacked off this week, no exercise days, no stretch days. My mood is too black right now, and while I am not going to do anything stupid, it is really hard to get motivated under the bullshit that Oregon is putting itself through with gov. Cunt. I haven’t been wearing the mask of shame unless I choose to do so, even though we are required to wear one, even outside. For the most part, no one says anything, but yesterday I was semi-challenged, and it is something that the wife and I do not see eye to eye on. I also know that at least one of my best friends has gone covidiot, as has my mother. It is all so depressing.
On the plus side, I am starting to get body temp dialed in, as that is a pretty serious trigger for my neurological system. Also, diet is taken care of, as the wife signed up for a salmon split. Also, we eat almost all-natural veggies and proteins. So, I got that going for me, which is nice.

Yesterday I was out of cell service for a bunch of the day. It was almost as if the world was normal and populated by healthy, smiling people and their dogs. Who, when politely negotiating the inevitable interactions on a narrow trail, were inevitably positive and sincere.

Where in OR are you?
I am in Albany, about an hour south of Portland. One of my biggest disappointments is with my condition(s) I cannot do long-distance walking at this point, though hopefully, that will change soon. They just found arthritis in a couple of my back discs and hip, which might be a fixable problem. Also, I am thinking about getting a tadpole trike to get back into long-distance bicycling, and there are more than a few trails around here for that.
No e exercise over the weekend. Two nights out with Neph, girlfriend, wife and I was a blast. Drinking, music, food and drinking.
Was going to head down again for pool party but we got stuff around the house that we need to take care of.
I am curious that if other nations are saying “nah we aren’t doing this anymore” and the US is going to double down…what is that about? Waning political and military influence in the world? Cannot recognize that the path we are on isn’t scientific at all?
I think it is another sign that our government is more corrupt than various others in the world.
Maybe they are just like us. So successful and so comfortable that they never think it could happen to them.

I see TMITE’s reporting on this is as dishonest as ever.
I need to do better on watching what I eat. I started back watching more closely a few days ago and am going to do better this week. I’m going to also try to do more meats on the grill and bought a grinder to not waste so much trimmings on things like brisket… looking forward to brisket burgers. I also found a nice 1/4 hp slicer that I’m thinking about pulling the trigger on. I can’t find decent roast beef anywhere, even the most expensive at the grocery store still has crap like tendons running through the meat.
One the other hand, I’ve been maintaining daily biking for 2-3 months now and even started getting up earlier to add more time. ~24 miles every day before work and I try to do a longer 35-40 mile ride on Saturday time permitting. I haven’t been losing much weight because of the poor diet, but at least have been building muscle and not gaining any more weight.

I think there is something that gets lost in the whole idea of exercise, and that is the goal is to be healthy, and not to have lost weight. If you are riding your bike that much, I would bet that even with a so-so diet you are in better shape than before. Better breathing, better walking, greater endurance, and so on.
I’ve never lifted outside. All my stuff is inside. But last year during lockdowns we found an outdoor rink and played there several times. That was fun. Except for the time there was a heavy frost and they hadn’t cleared the ice.
Outside hockey is the best hockey. Where I grew up we had three rinks within walking distance. We would periodically stop to shovel the rink and I’ll never forget the arguments over whose turn it was.

I workout in a garage – hot as hell in the summer (but you can open the big ol’ door), and extremely cold in the winter.
Summer – it’s usually nothing but shorts on.
Winter – being Michigan I’ll wear a runner’s mask, a hat, an old winter coat, light gloves under the workout gloves, and try to rush through everything as quickly as I can.
If the temps fall below 10, that’s when I usually decided it’s a good day to work out with bands – inside. Not quite the same level of workout but damn that iron gets so cold.
Once it hit 10, I put on gloves to throw, a bit awkward, but I still get out there, even in the dead of Winter, right now is prime time, bugs going away, and Color!

Good week. Did not lose anymore weight, but feel good. I only got to work out three times the last week, but am walking in the mornings as well. I am thinking of doing Ozzy’s one a day plan for a morning routine, plus going to the gym. Im doing 5×5 Strong LIfts. Max bench did 275 for four times. Was very happy. Went to see the girlfriend this weekend, and she has noticed, which is good.
