The Cowboys poleaxed the Eagles. Man, Jalen Hurts is not a good quarterback. The White Sox won their division for the first time in a long time. No other games of consequence took place last yesterday. But they’re back today, that’s for sure. UCL is back again this week, with a full slate of matches both today and tomorrow. Can’t wait. And that’s sports.
Chinese philosopher Confucius was born on this day. He shares it with plumber and inventor of the ballcock Thomas Crapper, French PM Georges Clemenceau, chemist Henri Moissan, baseball player Jack Fournier, tv personality Ed Sullivan, boxer Max Schmeling, cartoonist Al Capp, actor Peter Finch, actress Brigitte Bardot, pitcher Grant Jackson, another pitcher Todd Worrell, hockey goalie Grant Fuhr, actress Mira Sorvino, and actress/singer Hilary Duff.
Not a overlong list. Oh well, on to…the links!
Climate change takes the shape of a person…again. This one is using the excuse that she was boiling bear piss to drink.
And speaking of piss… this guy won’t be pissing on any teenagers for some time.
Yeah, hard pass. “Let’s make sure the least vulnerable to the disease get vaxxed with something we haven’t studied long enough to know the long-term side effects from yet.” What could possibly go wrong?
Let’s hope this catches on. For more reasons than one.
Can someone please explain this phenomenon to me? No, not “soaking”, but the phenomenon of elevating a few weirdo people’s online videos to the point that you’re mocking an entire religious group for kicks.
Infrastructure could mean anything. No, seriously. Apparently it could mean absolutely anything in the world as long as there’s a dollar sign attached to it.
Man, this is gender discrimination if I’ve ever seen it. So much for women’s equality.
This makes sense. If you’re a fucking retard. Which, obviously, San Francisco government is full of.
This will be an interesting matchup. Two absolute morons who have made a life out of their political grift will now have to face off against each other. I absolutely love political redistricting years.
Here’s a beauty of a song. I ay have played it within the last six months. I can’t remember. But I wanted to hear it this morning and that means you’re gonna hear it too. Enjoy.
Now go have a great day, friends!
Randy Quade gets all the bitchez!
“Can someone please explain this phenomenon to me? No, not “soaking”, but the phenomenon of elevating a few weirdo people’s online videos to the point that you’re mocking an entire religious group for kicks.”
JUST THE TIP!
These writers are so thorough. The found a whopping three (former) Mormons who would discuss the topic as if it was incredibly commonplace and also kept very hush-hush by current church members.
Oh well, I guess its better to use a few disgruntled former members to mock an entire religion than it is to interview actual mormons and find out of this is real or just the next butt-chugging or jenkem episode. I mean, how else can they make fun of an organized religion where the people seem genuinely happy?
NOT ONE OF US!
It was a major plot point on Garry Trudeau’s 2013 sitcom, Alpha House. I binged the show last year and asked every Mormon I knew (Mojeaux, and about half a dozen others) and no one had heard of such a thing. I figured it for garden variety theological prejudice and fear of The Other (like the bullshit about Jews shtupping through a hole in a sheet).
There was a whole sub-plot about soaking in the fine documentary Get Shorty.
So it is obviously true.
“Infrastructure could mean anything. No, seriously. Apparently it could mean absolutely anything in the world as long as there’s a dollar sign attached to it.”
You are almost there Sloop. Infrastructure spending means anything that helps team blue funnel tax payer money to their buddies, their own bank accounts, and their campaign coffers.
I believe I can fly…
Fly R. Kelly fly! If there ever was a time to fly, it’s now! Fly you fool!
I think there is a different “F” word that will be happening to him in prison, especially during shower time and after the lights go out, that comes to mind…
Feliz Navidad?

Gaia isn’t doing the things that would scare the rubes and hurt the non-believers enough, so her priesthood (she is a shaman) needs to take up the fight. At least this priesthood has not picked up the habit of decapitating those they want to punish or strapping a bomb to the body of some child and sending them out to blow themselves up amongst people they dislike to send a message yet. But that’s coming soon from the way the hoaxes now have escalated to burning down forests to boil down bear piss to drink.
That budget bill is the dying gasp of an empire that is being soaked for all its worth before the lights go out.
The Mormon Empire?
If anything I predict the nation of Deseret to rise out of the ashes and sweep across the intermountain west like a mighty wind.
They’re waiting for climate change to turn coastal California into a desert.
The credentialed but totally inept elite class has decided that since they have ran the Titanic into a massive ice block and doomed it to sink, they will just loot all the valuables – silver, chandeliers, expensive art, and so forth – load it into the life boats, then make sure to keep the other rubes on board distracted with bread & circuses so when they finally jump into the life boats and peddle away with the shit they looted, the ship only goes down with the idiots they divided and conquered still fighting about pronouns, skin color, and new fake history.
I really do think this is what’s going on. No one really know what the future will be like exactly. But judging from the actions of leadership it just looks like looting, and lying to cover for the looting. For the first time in my lifetime there is no shared national sense of progress, no goal, no destination. Stuff your pockets and flee.
It is. The real grifters see the writing on the wall, which says “FAILING CURRENCY”
When voters voted for Proposition G in 2007, giving it 58% of the vote, most of us (myself included) thought we were voting to keep chains like Starbucks and Burger King from taking over. “McDonald’s and other chain stores will have a harder time opening their doors in The City,” proclaimed the Examiner shortly after the election.
Okay, dummy.
Somebody should tell Sharky that even if that was the goal, it still makes him an asshole.
One of the biggest problems I have seen with people is that when a politician gives them a real vague and obviously faulty explanation of their agenda – “Fundamentally change America”, “If you want to keep your doctor, you can keep your doctor”, “Healthcare costs will go down if government controls it”, “Supporting good causes is infrastructure”, “The adults are in charge”, “Orange man bad!” – people don’t immediately go “Wait a fucking second, what are you really saying asshole”, but instead, they simply project their own personal beliefs of what the word salad/meme means on the crook being vague, and finally end up in tears and surprised when the politician shoves a couple of pineapples up their ass.
Apt. 10/10.
You get what you vote for.
That was not an accidental thing either, but by design to make sure the people planning to take advantage of this had a long time to rip everyone off.
“McDonald’s and other chain stores” is code for “brown people”.
To be fair, they don’t like poor white people either.
You’ve got to wait till the end of the clip for the punchline, but it’s a doozy…

NOT FAIR!

How dare he demand accountability for failure?
I thought they’d just throw him out and make sure he never finished his 20. Underestimated how petty and vindictive these assholes are.
It is not enough to deprive him of the bennies, especially since he CHOSE to walk away from them, and he needs to be made an example for anyone that dares fuck the machine in the numerous other instances of abject and total failure they will preside over as they drive the country into the ditch…
Remember when they were initially saying that he needed to seek mental help? Very Soviet of them. They liked to lock their dissidents in insane asylums too.
They need to do more than lock him up. That would make him a martyr. They need to thoroughly discredit him by saying that he’s motivated by mental illness.
The top men will punish anyone that exposes them for inept evil politically motivated hacks!
The incompetent get promotions and the honorable get fucked. The military is going to be screwed if they don’t get their heads on straight.
To be clear, I am not in favor of eliminating formula retail controls. I believe thoughtful planning is essential for cities, especially one as beautiful and unique as San Francisco.
He only beats me because he loves me.
So long as he stays there and doesn’t come to Texas, I’ll be happy. His burritos may be great. But he’s an idiot.
“I was voting for the good kind of fascism!”
These people truly are morons.
Remember when SNL was relevant (and funny)? Yeah, I know, been a long time, hasn’t it?
I suppose they are banking on Trump dominating the news cycle for 3 more years. Good luck with that.
No. (and No.)
I found it chuckleworthy.
That’s just pathetic.
Maybe they could get Chevy Chase to come back and trip a few times while imitating Ford as well.
Sock it to me! Wait, too far back.
They probably won’t be letting this guy write his own material, because he seems kind of funny. Can’t have that.
Trump has been lambasted in the media since the 1980s. Hell, even Bloom County was making fun of him.
I believe he’s on board with the “any publicity is good publicity” line of thought.
That’s how he won without spending much money at all. Free publicity.
When you have some of the most inept, corrupt, and stupid people projecting their deficiencies on you, enough people will catch on that the issue is jealousy/envy….
At least the impression works. He must like Trump enough to get it right. SNL sucks but this is far from the reason why.
It was funnier when they had to pretend Baldwin did a good job with his horrible impression of Trump.
I came across these sad tales – now Pfizer wants to do this to kids for no reason except greed.

Except when Hispanics are white, amirite?
That’s the beauty of race based politics. You can adjust the race measuring slide any which way favors whatever you are arguing as a fucking asshole trying to fuck over and rip off people.
Which is relevant because…? JFC these people are tedious.
Just a few hundred feet from turning into the parking lot for work another I hit another damn deer. Radiator leaking again, plastic grille smashed to bits. But, that appears to be all of the damage. Waiting for the local shop to open, at least I was able to drive it home and didn’t have to get it towed. 🙁
That sucks.
Sorry dude.
Bummer
I fucking hate deer unless it is cooked and on my fucking plate… They are worse than fucking squirrels.
Dang, dude. Glad you weren’t hurt.
Deer are vermin.
Mechanic says AC condenser is bent as well. Just had that and the radiator replaced in the spring from a deer and then a cat. 🙁
I’ve got a lot of work to do (for my side gig), but this morning I feel more like drinking beer. I’ll just have to work harder tomorrow.
Shit. Sorry, friend.
Sorry.
Ugh. We need more of this, with less regulation.
Ridiculing the outgroup makes people feel better about themselves and builds community cohesion? Because people without individuality need community to have any sense or worth?
Also, Mormons are icky Republican bigots and racist homophobic hypocrites who want to control women’s bodies to oppress LGBTIQQ2S+ BIPOCS. Why do you not believe in
Speaking of the redistricting years. Ohio is up to three lawsuits against the new proposed map. The RINO’s have super-majority control of both statehouses, and the governorship. The most recent lawsuit claims that the maps dilute “voting power of Ohio voters”. Local news is all about how outrageous these maps are and how dare the Republicans tilt things even more to their favor.
It never occurs to any of these idiots that a simple solution to restoring voting power to the people would be to abolish the Permanent Apportionment Act and to have a rep for every 30,000 people in a state.
How are you gonna powergrift doing shit like that, yo?
“It never occurs to any of these idiots that a simple solution to restoring voting power to the people…”
I think I found your problem.
Weird how Ohio was a purple state less than 10 years ago.
The major cities are solidly blue. The last Republican mayor of Cleveland was Voinovich (1989), Columbus was Lashutka (2000), Cincinnati was Gradison (1971). It’s the suburbs, exurbs, and rural areas that are red.
Must be nice to have red suburbs. Ours (NJ) are mostly solid blue, my neighbors regularly whine about property taxes while approving the annual school budgets responsible for ~85% of the tax hit.
Howdy neighbor!
It’s like you don’t even clickbait bruh.
Yup. Just like the Daily Fail writing up a big story about a dude who’s knife play got out of hand, didn’t want their BF to find out they were cheating on them, and caused a paic.
6-year-old boy follows mom’s instruction to leave mask on at school, wears it in school photo
Put that photo above the mantel.
While Peoples’ photo of her son quickly went viral, Mason is not the only student who chose to keep a mask on for school photos this year, according to Matthew Comfort, branch manager for Dorian Studio, the photography studio that took Mason’s school photo.
“We’ve taken hundreds and hundreds of students this fall wearing their masks,” Comfort told “Good Morning America.” “It’s not an isolated incident.”
Man, fundamentalist Muslim girls have been doing this for years and they don’t get fawned over. I blame sexism.
One hundred years from now those photos will be twinged to our minds the same way that we read whores of yore.
Blank faces matter
This used to make me angry but now it just makes me sad.
No worries, Sloop. Those terrible links were rescued by Vargas!
Surprise… Not.
Vaccination Status Is the New Must-Have on Your Resume
LOL, no.
No fucking way. I would find it really strange to see that on a resume. As strange as a headshot for a technical role.
Present for you, Friend https://youtu.be/FMENQeCbxfI
Or preferred pronouns.
Automatic disqualification.
Well, unless their preferred pronouns were really entertaining.
I find amateur nouns more entertaining.
“As strange as a headshot for a technical role.”
Dick picks FTW!
Speaking from experience, “hiring managers” generally don’t have a a fucking clue what makes a good employee. I hated dealing with those idiots in HR.
^^^THIS^^^
I told the company I currently work for I am done interviewing IT people if an HR asshole whose one claim to fame is getting their masters in some stupid “Studies” degree and carrying upwards of $100K in student loan debt, simply ignores the results of the interview and does whatever shit they want. I have been telling the company I work for that they will never be able to recruit the IT top young talent because the industry we are in simply is boring and not real IT. The HR people refused this and kept trying to recruit from Ivy League schools.
We had a scenario where the HR douche overrode my advice to get the kid from a state university that was a real problem solver and willing to learn to hire some dumb ass Ivy League lay about that pointed out the company would be lucky to have em despite the fact that he was mediocre and lazy (he admitted to me he was neither interested in doing grunt work nor learning any old and crappy tech as part of any job). They bring the Ivy Leaguer in at almost double the rate they could have gotten the go getter they dismissed cause his degree wasn’t from an Ivy League school. Two weeks after they hired him the kid checks in code to our SCM tool with the comment “Fuck this asshole company for lying to me and making me work on boring old shit, and I am out of here” then simply stops showing up for work. They never catch on to this until a month after when I report the check-in comment and they go looking for the kid. His manager thought like all spoiled brats the kid had simply decided to take time off. Needles to say they try to contact em and he tells them to fuck off he is working somewhere else.
The HR person contacted me to find out why the “great hire candidate” left (his manager had no clue), and got furious when I pointed out I had predicted exactly this only to have her override me cause she knew better with her manager on the calls. She then tried to make it my fault for not pressing her hard enough. I told her and her manager that I was done interviewing cause I was not into wasting my time if they were going to not listen to the person that knows the subject and candidate. Have declined now three times after they reached out to me to have me do interviewing again. I also want to point out that they went back, found the original candidate I had recommended and offered him a job, but he was smart enough to tell them to fuck off (politely, of course). I have started seeing a lot more hires happening now that are less problematic because HR dropped their idiot Ivy League focus.
My go-to story on this sort of nonsense credentialism is that one of the best IT troubleshooters I knew was a former car mechanic. No degree.
In fact, these days a degree, especially a ‘prestigious’ degree is a negative qualification in my eyes. They need to show that academia hasn’t rotted their brains.
Not surprising; car mechanics need to look at complex systems, identify the snag, and rectify it. Seems like that would carry over easily to IT stuff once you familiarize yourself with how those systems are supposed to work.
Who the hell would want to hire someone who’s going to run to HR screaming “microaggression” the first time they hear a boob joke in the break room? I wish we could move back to a system where hiring was more dependent on skills testing than degrees, and where managers were picked from the rank-and-file workers who actually understand the product the company makes… But there are a lot of roadblocks to that, namely occupational licensing laws that mandate government degrees for certain occupations, and how kids are told “go to college” every single day of K-12.
The most important characteristic I look for in new hire developers is the ability to diagnose & solve complex problems using logic and reason. This is the most important skill to be a successful developer.
What kind of fucked up company lets HR decide who to hire? HR is there to push the paper to hire who I tell them to hire. If I said “hire this one” and they hired somebody else, there would be a smoking fucking crater where HR used to be.
LOL
California tech firms, that’s who.
I was going to war with HR back in the 90’s. I usually lost.
I run the software HR needs to exist. I can delete HR, remove them from the records, make them no longer ever have existed.
But they don’t realize this. Instead, they don’t want to be bothered with anything so droll as actually deciding anything. So I fill out the paperwork, do the interviews and recommend a hire. Never had to war with HR, it’s always a war with budget. No one wants to pay for the people and things needed to fulfill the grand designs.
“But they don’t realize this. Instead, they don’t want to be bothered with anything so droll as actually deciding anything.”
As I tell everyone anywhere when the subject of HR comes up: HR exists to protect the company. Any employee stupid enough to believe the peddled trope HR is there to help them deserves the massive ass fucking HR will deliver them the moment they feel the employee can be a liability to the company (which they automatically go to as soon as you have any sort of serious issue). Avoid HR.
I can’t. My client agencies are the Department of Civil Service, the Governer’s Office of Employee Relations, and the Office of General Services (in particular, the Business Services Center, which is NYS HR)
You must not have ever worked for one of the larger companies out there. I work for a company with some 33K employees across the US (and another 10K across the globe). Of those 33K US employees 3K (yes close to 10% of the company) is HR people. And they have to do things to justify their existence.
No company can be that HR heavy and survive.
Lay off 90% of HR immediately, then fire the remainder.
I expect the HR department to take the company I work for down eventually, but so far they are slow walking that…
Yep. No hire without project approval.
Make sure to put your sex, race, marital status, and religion on your resume too so the hiring manger doesn’t have to ask about those either.
“None of your business, none of your business, none of your business, and, oh, none of your business.”
Rejected candidates should feel lucky. You don’t want to work for a company that rejects qualified candidates for stupid reasons.
That is a convenient way to weed out 70% of the companies you don’t want to work for, I guess.
A third of hiring managers surveyed said they were automatically eliminating résumés that don’t spell out vaccine status
Cool. I’d rather not provide value to an organization that thinks this is a good idea. Nice of them to self-filter, saves me the trouble.
How many times has it been since Corn Pop’s nemesis had an election “fortified” so his handlers could take back control that they simply decided to fucking ignore the courts and do whatever the fuck stupid shit they are hell bent on doing now with ?this thing?
They just let tens of thousands into the country. Of course this is how they’re going to play it.
I don’t care what his motivation was to do this, but IMO, this is exactly the way to deal with this subject when some woke white asshole wants you to help their cause using Hollywood as a weapon.
So. Rumour has it that Judi’s workplace is going mandate. We’ve heard nothing yet at mine. I plan to keep my head down as long as possible but if she really means this, we lose everything. I hate everyone, right now. I’m too damned old to live like a renter again. Too damned old to live like a property owner but that’s neither here nor there.
Fight the power, Festus!
Get a bulldozer and learn to weld.
Sorry to hear that man. Any chance of medical/religious exemption?
I’m sure we could cook something up but I’m just so fucking tired of it all. Judi asked me last night about whether or not I cared about my health. Silly Girl, it ain’t about that.
I have clients that I care about and care for me. If I stop working I’ll be dead in a decade.
I’ll sneak you across the border and you can be my butler. Probably more cleaning needed at my house than at your job.
Look at Batman over here trying to get himself an Alfred….
It’s rough times, but stay strong.
The HR manager at my work sent out a company-wide email requesting everyone’s vaccination status for the purpose of “ID cards” or something. Guess they’re going to give us big yellow stars to wear on our arms or something. What the fuck ever, I’ll wear it with pride, and if they mass-fire the unvaccinated, I’ll find a new job wherever and start freelance writing again.
I think they’re hesistant to fire all the unvaccinated though since probably 1/3 to 1/2 of the workforce is “hesitant”, and we’re understaffed as it is, and that group includes numerous pharmacists (who are not easy to replace).
There’s a story in Politico (I think) about Larry Hogan’s plan to rescue the Republican Party from Trump’s robot army by getting elected President in ’24.
Make America more like Baltimore!
Let’s see Hogan-Romney? Hogan-Cheney? Is Flake available?
The shaman firestarter girl has a BS in hard sciences from Caltech. Why on earth are they harping on her being a yoga instructor? Also, would.

Ive often wondered why the people most out-spoken against over-population arent the ones that kill themselves.
Still would. I know, but honesty.
Well, Yeah!
Hard Sciences? Are you making a joke that a forestry degree gives people wood? Cause fucking around in forests is not hard sciences unless you are joking about getting wood.
Biology and Chemistry double major. Her Linkedin is public.
So? I heard AOC has an economics degree from Boston College, and the beotch is about as economically illiterate as they come. Degrees, especially at woke colleges, are no longer worth the paper they are printed on. And that applies to hard sciences as well, as most of what passes for education now is marxist indoctrination.
I wonder what she was taught about the Austrians, if anything.
Hitler was a very, very bad person.
Even though she probably doesn’t know Hitler was Austrian, he was Austrian, so that counts.
But she knows Arnold Schwarzenegger was. And he was also a Republican, just like Hitler.
Foresters actually do make good statisticians.

I believe I said would. Look we all have types.

I love having to write an explainer to “general audiences” (read management) about why our 9-year old application is having trouble communicating with brand new applications and needs to be updated.
“Shit’s broken, yo.”
“Needs moar funding!”
Funny thing is, our recommended solution is to use an already purchased and available system which doesn’t require any additional monies be taken out of the nontechnical budget of the agency (at this time).
I don’t think anyone will take you seriously unless it needs more funding.
It’s like you don’t know how to government properly.
I do.
The client agencies don’t want to send any of their precious, precious monies to fund IT, especially since IT has moved to another agency that is not theirs. So they will fight against any IT proposal that costs money, even if it would save them money in the long run.
Paying for servers to get their work done is not more funding for the agency, it’s a loss of funding.
*Shrug*
I stand corrected.
Tard Tuesday: STUPID RETHUGLICANS ARE GOING TO DIE AND TAKE US ALL WITH THEM!
Trump in the news is the best thing going for the Democrats right now. Cartoon enemies help raise cash. In New jersey, for example, Gov. Murphy is – according to his ads – running against Donald Trump for governor, not defending his own record of ineptness and authoritarianism.
Trump is political crack to them. They need that next hit.
Ineptitude is one hell of a drug.
The most dangerous people are the ones that are truly inept and thing they are actually anything but because of their credentials… They are the top men across the board in our government, military, academia, and political class.
This is half the reason why that I will work a shitty job into my autumn years. I got “Peter-Principled” a dozen times. Dude, I’m not that gifted! Put me back on the line where I belong! I will only hurt you. I will disappoint you…
“As the morgues and ICUs in Idaho overflow with COVID patients”
Really happening or bullshit? I’m going to go with extrapolated nonsense based on some dubious half truth until I hear otherwise.
The “evidence” is probably that around 90% of the beds are filled. Nevermind that most ICUs are usually floating around that occupancy rate anyway.
Also, with all the concern from the Left about running out of hospital beds, you’d think they might be open to re-examining some regulations that could have a negative effect on that *cough CERTIFICATE OF NEED cough*.

Lol, Eleanor Clift.
As the morgues and ICUs in Idaho overflow with COVID patients, Republican Governor Brad Little said he would fine businesses with over 100 employees if they enacted a mask mandate.
WTF? He was into the Covid Cult. He was, as I recall, pretty heavy handed with his Lil Rona Panic measures.
Here’s a local story that should shed a little light.
Eleanor Clift [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED].
Not mentioned: what, if any, early stage therapies are being practiced at Idaho hospitals, and how that might affect the number of people that eventually require ICU care.
“Man, Jalen Hurts is not a good quarterback. ”
Yeah, as expected, he and the young Eagles got schooled on national tv by the Cowpokes. But the verdict is still out on Hurts. Think back a few years to when Dak Prescott came up for Dallas and looked like shit. It usually takes a few years to confirm or expose a QB.
Several people here have asserted that Latinos are a “naturally Democratic” demographic. But:
1) Biden’s administration, for obvious partisan reasons, has made it much harder for Cubans fleeing tyranny to escape to Florida.
2) The WaPo yesterday published an article about how the Texas GOP is handling redistricting. In it, they had two maps showing how the lower Rio Grande went from solidly Blue in 2016 to almost neutral. The entire map shifted Redder.
I’d say the facts in the WaPo article is evidence that, in Texas at least, individual Latinos are likely moving away from voting along ethnic lines and instead are accelerating the urban versus rural partisan divide.
Yeah, the ones who leave or were never part of the urban ethnic ghettoes seem to have politics that are similar to their paleskin neighbors.
And THAT is how you get white hispanics!
I once went and did a breakdown of the census data. Turns out 70% of the Hispanic population is white.
I can only surmise that the “Hispanic” demographic pigeonhole was created out of thin air for the sole purpose of getting them hooked on government dependence.
Using these kids as political props is our job!
The state school superintendent, Kathy Hoffman, a Democrat, praised the ruling as a welcome harbinger of change to the legislative process in Arizona, where Republican legislators routinely leverage their votes for the budget in exchange for something in return — in this case, substantive policy changes that Cooper ruled have no businesses being included in the budget.
Hoffman described the Republican standard operating procedure as “an assault on the democratic process,” and urged the state to let the ruling stand.
“While some will likely want to challenge today’s ruling, our school communities are tired of being political pawns in dangerous attempts to subvert democracy and ignore science,” Hoffman said.
Those poor degreed educators just want to impart wisdom to the next generation and enrich their live. Whycome Republicans so petty and mean spirited?
Democracy is great until the people actually want something different than we do.
Dog with pizza.

Hmm. Ideally yes, but it’s many expensives.
Yes they are.
I have 2, but worth it (imo).
So cute!
Is it cheaper in Eastern Europe, or even feasible to travel?
Yo, that’s a good doggo
Has anyone under the age of 40 watched “The Breakfast Club”? That was the defining coming-of-age movie for me and my fellow Gen Xers.
I’m afraid to rewatch it now, in case it’s not as good as I remember at the time.
I still love the monologue:
Remember when Occasional-Cortex or one of her staffers made an anonymous burner Twitter account to upload a video of her dancing, then claimed those fun-hating Rethuglicans were mocking her for dancing despite a complete absence of any Republicans going anywhere near it?
Pathological.

I’m under 40 and it was shown on TV quite extensively during my youth. Although the TV version cut several scenes making it kind of a strange movie. I didn’t see the uncut version but once as an adult. I guess it hold up. It had character and charm.
It holds up if you discount social media and view it in the context of its time.
Like movies where the plot revolves around something as simple as the lack of an available pay phone?
Pay phones are getting harder to come by as the years pass. I’ve got to drive miles to reach the nearest one.
Exactly. Now, each kid would be on their phones, probably streaming The Breakfast Club. They wouldn’t ever have to talk to each other at all, much less engage in a group therapy session.
Oh, and they’d be tweeting about it, ‘gramming about it, and TikToking about it.
I don’t even know what you just said.
/premature geezer.
Remote locks and cell phones have changed horror movies quite a bit as well. The classic trope of the phone lines being cut, or dropping the car keys under the car while trying to run away are D-E-D.
Now it’s all cell phone dead zones and electrical issues.
Which ones have the ‘twist’ where the dispatcher they reach is in on it?
Different trope. Usually with the addition of a cult or secret society that’s the real evil (which is man).
Even those won’t be an issue much longer.
I was going to refresh my first book, try to universalize it (as in, not date it either overtly or by technology use), and split the 3 romances out into separate books, but realized that technology and social media would substantially change the characters’ behavior. I dislike retconning. Even though I’ve done it before, it wasn’t much and even careful readers didn’t notice. The biggest changes I made were where I actually explained two characters’ behavior instead of letting the audience scratch their heads and believe them to be stupid and (just) crazy.
Some of the modern horror movies are setting the films in a grey time frame/world (such as It Follows). Where the technology is close enough to not feel really strange, but provides easy sidesteps as to why certain tropes are used.
Molly Ringwald, mmmmmmmm
She’s a collateral relative, but I must say she’ll never come close to appearing – at any age – in one of Q’s archives.
As a Gen X, it holds up. Judd Nelson is still fucking harsh.
It’s absolutely as good as you remember.
I never saw it as “defining” at the time because my HS experience was nothing even remotely like theirs. But it holds up pretty well anyway.
A contrarian view: http://moviesupclose.com/2018/10/22/why-the-breakfast-club-is-a-failure/
I could possibly write a rebuttal to that article, beginning with the fact that stereotypes exist for a reason.
Brian is the only one who can write a pointed essay. Besides, everybody knows that a paper written in committee is shit and nobody likes group projects.
Allison must want to be pretty; otherwise, she wouldn’t have allowed Claire to make her over. Also, boys like pretty girls, it is known.
Plus, let’s be honest, there’s a division of labor going on here, as in any society.
In any case, the punchline is that they acknowledge that yes, after they’re released from detention, they will go back to their lives, pretend they don’t know each other, and be exactly as stereotypical as they were to begin with.
However, I can appreciate the writer of the article can’t deal. Ferris Bueller was a hero when I was a teenager. Now, he’s just a giant douchebag.
The problem is that deep thinking hurts people these days. You can see it in the quality of media. Anything complex and not outright in your face bores and/or confuses the young ones.
Also, studios these days are usually focused on making big hits in the international market rather than just domestic ones. And the thing with the broadest worldwide appeal is brainless action movies.
This is one of the reasons why I don’t go back and watch any of those defining movies now, despite having missed them when they were supposedly relevant. When I saw that film, I just wanted the title character to get his comeuppance for the shit he put everyone else through.
Arguably Cameron is the actual protagonist.
And in the end, he stood up to his father rather than his abusive ‘friend’. I am disappointed in you Cameron.
Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer are well worth watching.
Better Off Dead is the pinnacle of 80’s teen films.
I’ve never seen either.
Heathers is the pinnacle for me. Even though I was in college already.
Yeah, Heathers is up there too.
What’s wrong with you people? The correct answer is, of course, Porky’s, Porky’s II: The Next Day, and Porky’s III: Porky’s Revenge. Would also accept the Revenge Of The Nerds franchise or any of the raunchier Porky’s clones like Screwballs.
You fucking rooted for the school principal, didn’t you?
I admit I am someone that does this sort of thing too UCS. When I watched Armageddon or Deep Impact, the stupid people made me end up rooting for the asteroid. For the short duration I watched Walking Dead, the idiots in that show also made me root for the zombies.
No fair rooting for the asteroids! Why should the rest of us die because the designated protagonists were assholes?!
Best scene from Armageddon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh8bbRPqHsE
Yeah Bueller was always the villain in that movie for me.
I still watch it once in a while if it’s on.
OFFS. That person apparently left the theater before the final 15 or 20 minutes.
I didn’t endorse it, just came across it the other day. I sure didn’t read the sidebar review of the Trump presidency.
Molly mentioned TBC on Rob Lowe’s podcast recently.
I never saw it.
And given the population of actual gang members at my high school, I doubt it was reflective of my experiences either. Heck, I’d wager the offenses they perpetrated wouldn’t even have gotten anyone detention at my school.
I hated how the dweeb still ended up writing the essay for the rest and he never got a taste. One of Hughes’ big failings.
That’s pointed out in the article TO’G just linked.
DNRTFA! I saw it when I was past that age but still got it. Poor dweeb. He’s bringing better firepower next time…
It holds up great. Fantastic movie.
I’m over 40. I’ve never seen the entirety of “The Breakfast Club”. The clips I saw of it, I wasn’t impressed.
I know that monologue, and while it is good, I just wasn’t impressed with the rest of the clips.
I don’t like John Hughes’ movies but he was a fantastic writer for the National Lampoon.
I watched it about a year ago because my girlfriend was flabbergasted that I had never seen it (I was 33).
All I got out of it was “being a teenager in high school is hard in various ways”. Dunno – maybe it resonates more if you see it as a teenager?
Love the Breakfast Club. A teenage angst movie that takes place almost entirely in a school library and is still fun & interesting? Yes.
Plus, Molly Ringwald’s outfit is something I would wear today. Though I liked her clothes in Pretty in Pink better.
Ralph Lauren FTW.
I can’t picture her as Allison, the part ISTR she originally read for.
“As the morgues and ICUs in Idaho overflow with COVID patients”
Really happening or bullshit? I’m going to go with extrapolated nonsense based on some dubious half truth until I hear otherwise.
I’m going down there today. I’ll see if I can count the bodies on the street awaiting pick-up.
I’m sorry for being so negative, lately, folks. It’s just life experiences and the Earth’s twirl setting me off a bit. I love Autumn until I don’t.
Worry not, Festus.
Titty Tuesday.

ATTN: Festus.
Thanks for that! I feel a little better, now.
I have to get my second vax Oct 8th. I have no leverage here in Korea, and I am not ready to move out of my Teach-ESL-in-Asia career of 12+ years now. I almost hope something nasty happens to me so I can just take some time off and be able to make an example for my family of why I’m against it all. But I don’t predict anything nasty happening. Last time I just got to go to work late and my boss had to host one of my classes for me. I did become sleepy with my first, and those weird wake-sleepy switches lasted about two days.
Whatever. I wish I were in more of a position to fight back, but I also really don’t care. I do think about the long-term success of being a bad demonstration, but I highly doubt it and meh. (I wouldn’t trust my current mental state with anyone thinking of anything too logical outside of working and making money.)
Started this year on the felt, money-wise, and just want to keep adding bank. Paycheck coming in a week, and my two gigs are quite cake-y and I’ll ride while as I can. I did edit for UCS back in the day, have done other novels, plays, short stories, and plenty of online freelance work as well, though not in a while. Once I get better fiscally sorted, that is the world that I want to delve back into, though much deeper this time. I am also quite certain that I’ve got a helluva non-fiction book in me. It’s certainly a story with plenty of legit and unique aspects to it. I’ve got several hundred pages of in-the-moment documentation, a tiny amount of which I posted here not too long ago. There’s plenty more. Some of those moments are pretty solidly written out, in real-time, and there are many oddities of my recovery (hallucinations galore! and more!) that I detailed in depth as I went through the process.
I likely am not available now, but I know there are plenty of writers here with personal and outside knowledge/contacts. I would be hella keen to talk in the future about possible opportunities if any of y’all have knowledge or use. Something that I’ll be around to talk about in the future. It is good to have that goal, that was once a past accomplishment, in sight.
I was very envious of dbeagle’s boating race! I’ve been to Hawaii and it was just as magical as this boy could’ve imagined. I had many astounding moments during my week there, but the one that sticks with me the most is the memorial above the USS Arizona. That oil is still rising up to the surface and distorting the water’s reflections left a permanent image that I can still see when my mind wanders back.
Y’all are the best! For the first time since I’ve been back, I don’t have Wed mornings off! Gotta get ready for the morning commute. But, hey, for this week now I have Friday morning off! I’ll take it.
Sorry to read yesterday about your recent demoralization.
Thanks. Today started out weird but ended up OK. The yo-yo goes up and down. I suppose one of the better lessons learned is to understand the fluctuations. I have some bad times, but I never let them lead me to despair. Still kickin’ and that’s always important to remember. Frankly, doing quite well. The low-sinks-down are unpleasant, but it’s always good to trust yourself that you can rise back up.
So far I have proven that I can and invariably do. We all have frightfully upsetting days. I know I’ll have more. But I always expect to bounce back and I always have. Onward. Upward. Always. (I have no desire to ever get a tattoo, but that’s the strongest candidate so far. I’ll probably do it in different languages like a silly ’90s/current Kid getting something done in Chinese/etc. But I’ll do ’em in languages I know (enough of) and have lived in. I’m not quite sure that’ll be easy to explain…it’s supposed to just be a reminder to myself so others can’t read into it…but people will think I’m just doing that old, generic thing. I don’t understand tattoos…I don’t trust what I did a few years ago…and yet people permanently decide that they can trust themselves NOW into perpetuity?…Uh….I certainly don’t trust myself that much. For a variety of reasons 🙂
Get the one that states in Mandarin – “I am a buttplug for getting this silly tattoo”
Psh. Know no Chinese and have never been….technically. I’ve been to Taiwan and have been to Hong Kong, one of the raddest cities on the planet, I think four times.
Following your line of logical thinking, I’d definitely have to work in 씨발….which hilariously (AND BE CAREFUL!) sounds a lot like the word for ’18.’ And ‘immer’ in German is simple…I can find a way to put these things together….
“나는 bin 씨발…immer….” I don’t know how to mix the grammatical structures…but…uh…you’ve got me pretty close…
I’m sure they’d say “Just because that happened doesn’t mean it was because of the vaccine!” and then immediately bring up an anecdote about an anti-masker or anti-COVID-vaxxer who tested positive and imply that this proves that masks and vaccines are absolutely crucial for everyone.
Pay no attention to the angry mob behind the curtain
President Joe Biden can’t afford Terry McAuliffe to lose the governor’s race in Virginia — and the White House knows it.
It’s a scenario the president and his aides and close allies increasingly view as a real possibility, given tightening poll numbers in the race and signs of Democratic apathy. The White House, Democratic National Committee and outside partners are closely coordinating their efforts and speaking almost daily, according to three people familiar with the dynamic. Just over a month before Election Day, they are planning to ramp up activity and engagement — in addition to the $5 million the DNC has already budgeted for Virginia, one of the people said.
They know what’s at stake. A loss to Republican Glenn Youngkin in the off-cycle governor’s race could set off a domino effect, with Democrats panicking and thinking it’s 2009 all over again — the year they last lost the state’s gubernatorial race, followed by a wipeout in Congress. Democrats fear the party will lose faith in the idea that Biden’s agenda will help boost their electoral prospects; that they’ll fret about his broader handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, and even question the embrace of vaccine mandates as an electoral cudgel after it found favor with a wide swath of Americans.
“There should be concern, it’s a close race. If Terry loses that’s going to scare a lot of Democrats on the Hill. It’s going to make people worry about the midterms and it’s going to make it harder to pass the president’s agenda,” said Josh Schwerin, a Democratic strategist who has worked as a McAuliffe political adviser and former press secretary. “People are going to get skittish if we lose this.”
“It would be the wrong reaction,” Schwerin added, “but it would be the reaction.”
Pffft. Stupid voters; what do they know? Why would politicians pay attention to them?
I’ve seen all of one McAuliffe sign locally. He is not a popular candidate at all.
There’s plenty of signs for the local Democrat candidate for the house though.
The Ds changed laws to support fortifying the election. So don’t worry. Enough votes will be found.
The plan is to ballot harvest McAuliffe a a win…
“This fixation on appearance over substance has led to ridiculous results”
Sounds like progressivism.
Speaking of forest fires…
I drove through Yellowstone a year or two after the Big Fire (late ’80s). The burned areas had turned into lush green meadows full of elk and deer and buffalo. So tragic. Such an irretrievable loss.
Funny thing about Life, it’s always in the last place you look,
That’s only because I stop looking once I find it.
Dark, Man….
Some trees require a fire for their seeds to sprout. They know they can’t grow in thick underbrush.
Like every pine tree?
The mistake you make is denying the fact a whole lot of morons have been conditioned to believe the universe, earth, and nature, are static entities and change is always a bad thing, and conversely feel panic.
deer are a nuisance
“Of course I believe the White House is concerned,” said Chris Korge, national finance chair at the DNC who is close with McAuliffe. “Knowing Terry the way I do, this guy is tireless, he never stops, he’ll pull it out. But it’s going to require him running a near perfect campaign.”
Fear within the administration is real. Specifically, a third person expressed concerns about complacency among Democratic voters setting in, and pledged that much of their work over the final 35 days will be on ensuring those restive voters turn in their ballots.
“If Democrats, if the McAuliffe campaign, if the coordinated campaign run a strong [get out the vote] effort, which I believe that they will, I think that they’re going to be in a great spot,” the person told POLITICO. “But people have to show up. They’ve got to show up and vote.”
Don’t those people know they are the chattel property of the Democratic Party? How dare they shirk their duty to bring about the Thousand Year Reich?
Re “soaking”: I have never heard of it. That said, it also wouldn’t surprise me if it’s a thing. Kids tend to want to do shit to get around rules they think they should follow, but don’t want to follow. Add in social media, you really might find out “everybody’s doing it”. Our religion is quite sexually repressed. I believe it’s one reason people get married young. And, as one internet rando said once, “Pressure busts the pipe”. Other religions (as Trashy has alluded to more times than I can count) don’t have that problem, so the media turns to the one still-sexually-repressed religion in the western hemisphere. The reason they target us is because they can’t find another religion that actually believes in abstinence before marriage.
So, my never having heard of it does not mean it doesn’t happen and I would be surprised if it doesn’t.
I actually used that as a plot point in a few of my books because it’s quite significant and takes a toll on the psyche.
Reality is far crazier than imagination…
Mojeaux, if it makes you feel better, I’ve heard of soaking in reference to Catholic kids as well.
Meh, I don’t care. I grew up being a religious scapegoat and I’m not any worse for it, and I’ve done my own public bashing of the church, so I can’t point fingers. Also, none of this affects me in any way whatsoever.
“The FDA takes very seriously the importance of getting vaccines, shown to be safe and effective in children,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” show.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Meanwhile, Baker has stressed the importance of his mandate, saying it will help his state lead the nation in vaccinations. More than 74% of Massachusetts residents are fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Gotta pump them numbers up! So what if we break a few eggs? We like omelets.
Good song.
JFC what an asshole.
Yeah, but where’s the omelette then?
Our Betters enjoyed it. It’s their reward for a job well done.
leading infectious disease expert
STOP SAYING THAT!
or, equally apropos
You keep using [these] word[s]; I don’t think [they] mean what you think [they] mean.
She seems nice
A Maine woman has been arrested after calling in bomb threats to her boyfriend’s workplace because she wanted to spend more time with him.
WABI reports Kayla Blake, 33, of Etna, Maine, called in two separate bomb threats to Puritan Medical Products in Pittsfield, Maine, where her boyfriend works. Police say she called Maine State Police, claiming she would put a bomb at the plant on Thursday; two hours later, she called again, threatening to put four pipe bombs there.
Oh a real peach. Is that full on coyote ugly?
Don’t insult coyotes man…
Is it just me or does any else find it funny that when Obama was President he said he wouldn’t raise taxes on anyone making less than 250,000 and the salary of the VP is around 235,000. Now that Biden is President he won’t tax anyone making less than 400,000. Which is the salary of the President. I guess anyone making more than you is rich.
Of course anyone making more than me is rich.
But Joe left off all the %s he got from the bribery in his calculations.
That’s not money you put on your 1040, man!
Isn’t this phenom just human nature? People won’t admit it, but they are not for government confiscation of people’s earnings because they think government is noble and will do good with it, but because they are envious of those that have more. That’s why most people are OK finding out they are getting taxed more too because they always hope it hurts their show-off neighbor with the nice house & new cars more…
Good morning, Sloop!
Welcome back and thanks for all the lynx!
You are correct. The Chapelle R.Kelly skit, like pretty much all of Chapelle’s work, still stands up.
As does Candy-O. Great song.
I hope you and the rest of the gang have a fantastic day!
Happy Tuesday, Friend!
bridesmaids dresses are getting weird
https://twitter.com/aperigator3/status/1442771127223336960
If it isn’t crotch-less panties then I don’t believe you!
It would have been cooler if the bride was dressed like that…
That looks like a fun wedding.
That has a Warhammer-ish look to it. Perhaps UCS can comment.
You want me to go to a twitter link.
… fine.
Those bridesmaids are dressed up as Battle sisters.
Only stupid people disagree with us
“We have seen for sure that the vaccinated and unvaccinated have viewed the pandemic very differently,” said Liz Hamel, the foundation’s director of public opinion and survey research. “It’s not really surprising to me that they view the conversation around booster shots differently.”
Those still yet to receive a shot are among the “strongest holdouts,” Hamel said, adding that the unvaccinated are more likely to believe the severity of the pandemic has been exaggerated, are less worried about getting sick, and have viewed the safety and efficacy of the vaccines differently than those who are vaccinated.
——-
The split in attitudes toward vaccines more broadly continues to be a largely partisan one, the survey data shows, with 90% of respondents who are Democrats saying they have received at least one vaccine dose compared with 58% of Republicans.
That division by political identity has remained steady at about 30 percentage points since vaccines became widely available in the spring, Hamel said, even as other gaps along lines of race and ethnicity have narrowed.
Political affiliation determines one’s fundamental philosophical worldview and analytical framework, you say?
i think you might have that ass backwards.
That’s some mighty fine tautologizing there Lou.
The political split on vaccines extends to the public’s plans to get a booster shot, as 68% of Democrats said they will “definitely” get one if recommended, nearly twice the share of Republican respondents.
The vast majority of fully vaccinated adults overall said they would “definitely” or “probably” get a booster if it were recommended for them by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration.
Good little boys and girls do what Big Nanny says. They don’t ask questions.
I aint gettin no booster
Polling is satan’s santorum.

I come to the glibs, the experts on everything.
I saw an orthodontist this morning because well, I want straight teeth. I am apparently eligible to use aligners which would be nice so that I am not advertising braces as an adult.
However, the orthodontist thought I would probably benefit from surgery to correct my (small? to me at least) overbite. This wasn’t something I was considering, as I don’t think I have any issues currently.
Any thoughts on this? Seemed a little extreme to me, and it’s not a cheap surgery either. Supposed benefits include breathing better (I can breathe now), less risk of sleep apnea (I sleep like a baby), better chewing (I ate steak the other night with no issues), and less sinus issues (I do have seasonal allergies that Allegra takes care of).
Don’t do it.
If it’s within the range of motion for your jaw to line up the incisors to bite, you’re fine.
No. To me, it’s upselling. Unless you have a significant overbite that interferes with your activities of daily living, there is absolutely no reason for it.
Ok, you and UCS are confirming my thoughts. My dentist has never said anything about it, other than “hey you have an overbite.”
Definitely sounds like upselling. I dumped the first dentist I tried in the area when he pushed a whole bunch of work. My current dentist focuses on monitoring my old fillings as they slowly crack my teeth.
Same. Current dentist is just, “You need to get that cracked filling re-done.”
Me: “When I get around to it, I will.”
I like my dentist, says I clean and take care of my teeth well. Recommends getting them straightened out every time, but that’s the only upsell from her.
And yet, she recommended this orthodontist.
I had an overbite as a kid but fixed it with braces
A friend was very happy with her teeth straightening thingamajigs but they were somewhat pricey and implied receiving new things every couple of weeks. I have no idea what aligners are
invisalign it was called
I have almost straight teeth due to 4 years of braces as a kid and I think it is good enough.
Same thing, they called them aligners.
TMJ surgery?
I think so, they just called it “corrective” jaw surgery.
He has a luxury car or boat payment due for his mistress and is using you as a means to that end…
If you don’t absolutely need it, you do not want to go through that. Second opinion should be mandatory. It’s a big fucking deal.
IIRC, the surgeries for TMJ and overbite are slightly different.
“However, the orthodontist thought I would probably benefit from surgery to correct my (small? to me at least) overbite. ”
Open jaw surgery for a slight overbite? No.
I thought you were about to do some kind of throwback to that article linked in the AM thread yesterday about some guy with a small dick having issues with his wife telling him she wanted to cuck him with a guy with a big dick, but then I saw you were commenting to a small overbite problem and not cucks…
Don’t do it. Dental surgery can jack you up. Unless you are in pain over it, Do Not Do It.
I had a large underbite as a kid and it was fixed with braces.
Forget the teeth.
Get a bewb job.
For those of you following along at home, we’re about to dump our money pit of a house and move. We now have a place to rent and it is nice.
Now the stress morphs from uncertainty and fear to moving and making a home in a new place. This house has put us through the wringer, but we’ve lived here for 16 years (to the day of the move) and I’m going to miss it, miss the routine, miss the places where my stuff used to be, even while I enjoy the “I don’t have to repair anything in this place” and “It’s already all put together yay!”
Also, I don’t want any part of home ownership again. But the idea of living under someone ELSE’S roof is making me feel somewhat like a guest and I’m not sure how to deal with that. The last time I rented, I was renting from my mother and she let me do whatever I wanted with the place. It’s going to take a while to make myself feel like it’s my home.
Also also, I’m having my ulcers cut out on the 12th, and after that I’m going to be useless in a move, and I will feel the accompanying guilt of being useless. We have the house starting Friday so we’ll be able to take our time moving our stuff. It’s only a couple of miles away and we have a truck. This is all between my workingness.
It’s exciting and scary and wonderful and awful all at the same time. But the new place sure is nice.
To be honest, I thought you’d moved out months ago.
Good luck with the operation. Get better soon.
We thought we’d be moved out months ago, too! Situations. Lifeus interruptus. You know.
Thanks for the well wishes. How are you doing from your recent encounter with a laparoscope?
My incisions are down to red lines on the skin (some texture, but no worries of reopening). My physical abilities are back to “get up and move lazy bones” levels of unimpeded by the operation.
I used to say my stress levels could be measured in antacid and lotto tickets, but I’ve not needed antacid. Now if only I can get that injection of cash so I don’t need the lotto tickets…
I ended up popping Tums yesterday because my ulcer-calmer-downer medication wasn’t doing its job.
They gave me this stuff called Carafate to coat my insides but they correctly called it my new second job because 4 times a day you have to grind up the pill, mix it with a little water, and suck it down. You can’t eat one hour before and after each application. Can’t take your meds with it, either.
Fun.
Hopefully the operation will put an end to that (in a good way)
Thanks.
Also, I don’t want any part of home ownership again. – according to youtube recommendations of late building your own off grid house seems popular these days. Or finding an old barn in a quiet village in the mountains of spain and renovating that into a house.
*whimper*
No. Just…no. I’m hoping the apocalypse kills me quickly. Preferably painlessly.
Good luck with the medicals
I will do my version of prayer for you, sweet Mojo. You have accumulated much more in those years than you’ve bargained for.
Thank you, Festus, and my prayers back to you. I know your life is stressful right now and I feel for you.
I could make it better if I put some effort into it but then I’d be even more stressed. Does that make any sense?
Yes, it totally does. Inertia is a helluva drug.
I hope the operation and the move go well.
I’m only a couple months in, but so far I really dig renting. I actually love that this is someone else’s house. Instead of busting my ass all weekend on projects, I go hiking or fishing.
I may feel differently in a year, but for now, this is heaven.
Good luck!
That is what I’m hoping for, too. Every place I’ve ever rented (even when I couldn’t change anything), I managed to make my home. I don’t expect this to be any different once we’re settled in.
Late to the party…
First, congrats on the Great Escape!
I’m having my ulcers cut out on the 12th, and after that I’m going to be useless in a move, and I will feel the accompanying guilt of being useless
Good to get that taken care of. Try not to fret about feeling useless. We’ve been here nearly 20 years – 2 1/2 weeks before we moved, I tore my calf muscle falling UP a staircase, and was on crutches as my wife did all the heavy lifting. First thing I did after moving was see a local orthopedist about my calf – he took one look, sent me to the local hospital for ultrasound, and I spent the next 3 days there on anticoagulants for the DVT that resulted from the bleedout of the torn muscle. My lovely wife brings this up every now and then when I complain about some chore.
In local covid updates, the cases are rising and so are the restrictions. the fuckers learned nothing.
WHY GOOD does it fucking do to close stores at 1800? And restrict travel between 2000 and 0500 ? What is the possible fucking reason? So everyone crowds in the stores at the same time?
We’re all gonna die.
I mean not me, but in general yes
Check your undead privilege, bro.
LOL
DO WHATE WE TELL YOU, YOU FUCKING SERF BITCH!
The world has lost its fucking mind.
I never thought I would see anything like it.
Protest! The inability to purchase masks after work will result in UNTOLD DEATHS…
“A yet unidentified man was carried off on a stretcher at the Capitol riot after a fall of 3x-4x his height off a staircase. I slowed down four different angles of video, and it appears that he was pushed by a US Capitol police officer in a motorcycle helmet.”

Nothing to see here! Move along!
The victim has been in jail since then, right?
Could have been the guy “trampled to death.”
No wonder they are fighting so hard to prevent the release of the footage.
Awwww! Animal’s post attracted a spambot. *sniff* Glibs is growing up so fast.
Every one of Animal’s posts get a spambot. It’s been a pattern for a while now.
Better lock the windows and doors!
It’s not a spambot. It’s a ping-back from his blog to whatever he wrote here.
Oooh! Like a webring!
Heh. Except not quite.

Yeah, that’s me.
G’night, Folks!
Good night, Festus. Sleep tight.
Legalism is a problem with all religions. Fortunately, Christianity avoided that due to the direct denouncement of legalism in the New Testament [insert eye roll here].
Yeah, in my church, grace got shit-canned in 1969 with this little gem. I call it The Rule Book.
Legalism comes along whenever there are rules. When the rules say you can’t do something you want to do, you end up looking for a reading of the letter that doesn’t cover as much as the spirit. That is, until you decide to just ignore the rules and risk the retribution of the rest of your neighbors.
Only if you had not been paying attention to the destructive left’s agenda…
Strange how locking down and preventing free movement while simultaneously pushing a panic narrative created a volatile situation.
Nobody could have predicted that.
Not to mention the early release of thousands of prisoners.
“On the flip side, property crimes declined almost 8 percent, the 18th consecutive year estimates for these offenses fell.”
I find this hard to believe. Where I live theft is rampant and the police don’t seem to care much.
If the police don’t respond it is not a crime…
See how the number goes down?
Regarding replacing healthcare workers with the NG, this made me laugh.
Half the nurses in the hospital couldn’t find any veins for blood draws or IVs and they had to call their dedicated IV guy to put mine in.
I’m glad I got that done before this nonsense.
Same. Nurses, no can do. Anesthesiologists (after I’m put under even!), no. The only people who can reliably find a place to draw blood or put an IV without blowing out all my veins are the phlebotomists.
The stupid in that thread hurts.
I’m trying to imagine a scenario where I was hospitalized and would need to care whether or not my nurse was vaccinated. Certainly not if I was already there for Covid.
I’m still not clear on how calling in the National Guard helps.
The NY Gov can only call the NY National Guard, so they are all in-state already.
If they are licensed, they are almost certainly working a healthcare job somewhere else in NY.
So this is just moving the deck chairs on the Titanic. No net increase in NY healthcare workers to address a shortage, just moving some of them around. Classic somethingism.
Probably the icky red counties. The big cities need them more.
They can show up wearing 50 lbs of gear and scatter some orange cones around.
Only one more condo “inspection” (twice-yearly spy mission to make sure we don’t have improper plumbing or flooring or whatever the fuck) in Spring ’22 to go before I GTFO.
I had finally managed to get the water in my bathroom sink to go below the drain (so I could clean the sink bowl from the primordial sludge that had come up with my plunging efforts), and the MFers filled it back up again during their “inspection”.
The very thought of that type of inspection rankles me.
I’m glad I’ve got this little hovel almost paid off. Just $20K left!
Congrats!
Thank you.
I’m debating sinking my upcoming retro pay into the mortgage to pay it off even sooner.
Once I’m out of debt, I’ll have to pick a new goal. But I’ll be able to accumulate savings faster.
Picking one goal at the time is the right approach, focus is key.
You could look at the Dave Ramsey list and see what you haven’t done. I think you moved step 6 (pay off house) in with step 2 (pay off all other debts), which, actually, he is totally okay with. Its the one modification to his list that I think he has no issue with at all.
It has been discussed here before, and not sure where you are on other stuff, but will list again.
1. Small emergency fund. Dave says $1000, but he has been using that number for 25+ years now, so it is low IMO. I say 1 month of expenses.
2. Pay off debts other than house (check).
3. Big emergency fund. Go for 6 months of expenses.
4. Retirement. I think this is probably the place you could hit hard after the house, crank up the tax benefited retirement until the IRS says stop!
5. Kids college. Not applicable, IIRC.
6. Pay off house (check, soon).
7. Hookers and blow. I think Ramsey words it differently.
I have 1, 2, 3, and 7 down. 5 and 6 do not apply. I really need to up my retirement game.
A huge gun safe and a collection to put in it.
So I should buy a bank building with a vault?
And just like that, you’ve added something to my goals list.
Surprisingly affordable.
Gonna need a remodel. I hope those couches are included.
That is sweet. Looks like they didn’t fuck up the historical detail. I could definitely see living in a place like that. For another $100K in remodeling, it could be awesome.
I’m moving to kutztown.
Yes, that looks like something I could go for, assuming the neighborhood isn’t shit and there’s somewhere off the street to park.
But no yard.
I have coped with no yard so far.
My hassles have all been with parking.
It rankles me twice a year. It’s really disruptive. They ask us to clean out our closets where the air handling units are located, and I said “fuck that shit” long ago. I’m not disassembling my storage closet and reassembling it every March & September.
No more HOAs of any kind for me. I just want to be left alone!
The very idea of an HOA is a dealbreaker for me.
It’s my property, the fewer people who get a say in what I do with it, the better.
How does one go about collecting enough bear piss to boil?
I’m sure you can get it online, if you’re not picky about the species.
Well, she’s not really there for the hunting.
If you win the powerball, can you turn it down and take the 2nd prize instead?
Winning $1 million would be perfect. After taxes, I could pay off the new house (still under construction) and make some nice donations to charity. That would use up the whole prize and be in a much better position, without a house payment each month.
Dealing with $410 million (current cash value) seems like hard work.
I’d be willing to take on that work. It would make for an interesting change of pace.
Cost/benefit analysis sez….worth it.
Based on the history of lottery winners…maybe not.
I mean, I know how to deal with money, so it wouldn’t be like that, but still.
A different colored Ferrari for every day of the week.
I’m sure the state would keep the extra winnings.
Sure, they’ll keep $409M. Then in April, the IRS will ask you for the taxes on the full $410.
Take the annuity.
Half lump sum (or less) and half annuity seems like a winner.
I’m not sure a mix like that is allowed. I believe it’s all lump sum, with a substantial surcharge for it being lump sum, or annuity, on which you would get the full amount less taxes.
I know Kansas says if you take a reduced payment, you can keep your identity secret. Missouri doesn’t allow for secret identity collection of winnings.
If you’re married, joint ticket with two winners electing a different payout is what one winner did here.
If I win in New York and take the annuity, does New York get to keep taxing the future payments after I’ve moved out?
Probably. When I was in public accounting we had a lottery winner as a client and she had to file a non-resident return every year for her winnings in Massachusetts.
So my best bet is to take the tax hit all now, so they can’t raise the rate on me later as they get desperate for funds?
I would say yes, unfortunately. It would give you a clean break away from NY too if that’s the goal.
Of course you are also betting on whether or not the Federal rate will increase in the future.
Move before you cash the ticket.
If I recall, you have to be a resident of the state where the ticket was purchased to win.
By the ticket in the state you wish to move to.
Buy, even.
That won’t work.
Move before you even play.
Hard work 30 different times.
:: jumps up and down in studio audience:: Take the lump sum! Take the lump sum!!
Of course, I can earn more than the annuity.
Oh. The annuity isn’t for earning interest. It’s to keep us from spending it all in 2 years.
Have a lawyer set up a trust in a non-extradition treaty country.
If you cannot handle the lump sum, you shouldn’t play the lottery.
Of course, I discuss this with the chance of me buying a ticket being very close to zero.
Srsly, d00d?
Happier now?
If you cannot handle the lump sum, you shouldn’t play the lottery.People do a lot of things I think they shouldn’t do.
You don’t have to keep it. Find some good charities.
By the time that $410MM gets discounted to present value and taxed, its more like $100MM, if that helps.
Yes, the headline number is the total amount that will be paid if you don’t take the cash option. The cash option is the discounted present value. Its blatant fraud that only the government could get away with.
The $410 is the present value, the full value is $570. So, after tax, lets say $250.
Haven’t been tracking the jackpot. I’ll take your word for it.
Felt a little sick yesterday. Today just tired and dragged out. And cold!
But no fever.
So obviously a new COVID variant, so please pray for my soul. 😉
It very well could be. I only had sinus issues, and thought it was allergies.
In a just world, Bob Ferguson would be dangling from a [REDACTED]

Shitty behavior by Greyhound but their company and forcing them to condone illegal actions is flat wrong. So is extorting money to pay to criminals. Not that any substantial amount will go to the individual criminals. Skimming off from the state and then to select organizations who will help illegals enter and remain in this country.
Won’t somebody please think of the Latinx and other passengers of color?!
Well EF made it back from Ireland; United canceled her flight – one day delay – so she ended up paying out of pocket for a one-way flight via Delta.
And her sister rented a car in Chicago to make the drive back.
She’s happy to be back home.
Ah, the romance of air travel.
Glad she’s back.
Glad she got home…how’s COVID Life in Ireland?
Let me tell you how much I’m enjoying reading about the beginning of releasing a “beta” of full self driving on the Tesla forums. This is the same self driving that we were promised roughly 5 years ago and that people of paid anywhere from $5k to $10k when they purchased their car and been unable to use.
Musk, likely to reach some accounting or SEC hurdle, has started to release this very slowly into the wild. With veneer of a “beta” so that the driver remains responsible and that this isn’t really self driving. Mind you it still drives like a scared teenager.
But the best part is that to get access to the beta that you paid $10k for – the car will monitor your current driving for your driving characteristics and phone home. Those with what Tesla deems unsafe driving practices get no access to the “beta” i.e. you still won’t get anything for your $10k.
The best part on the forums is the split between the cheerleaders and the critics. On one hand “we” all have to do our part to help Musk so of course these restrictions make sense. OTH, folks are rightly pissed they paid this money and now have to jump through hoops to get what they paid for years ago.
Bonus – many of the owners now realize what shitty drivers they are. The car reports to you what driving parameters it tracks and how you score on them. To me the parameters aren’t particularly problematic, but on an empty road to have fun I’d certainly break them. But on a regular ride in typical metropolitan NYC you can drive perfectly fine and seemingly not really break them. However, these folk can’t seem to follow even by NYC standards ridiculously close and frequently hard brake.
That said I don’t know for sure as I didn’t buy any of the self driving crap so I can’t evaluate how easy or hard it is to get a low driving score. So I’m just sitting back with the popcorn and enjoying this.
Oh…I don’t want my car to do that…Eek.
Insurance companies do this now with plug in OBD devices. Voluntary for now…
It can be a very lucrative business. Selling that data to various other entities (properly anonymized of course!).
OnStar makes a ton of money selling their data to third parties.
These younger kids could be vaccinated by Halloween, Pfizer CEO says.
Gee wonder why their PR team picked that date. Cause they know parents are weak
Honestly they couldn’t get boosters approved. This is unlikely to happen by then.
Nobody is home today. Thus, along with my mulled cider wax cubes, I have the Christmas music on loudly. I hear you groaning. Stop that.
It’s not even Q4 yet.
Acceptable if this album: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BaTeascyDq8
(Can’t find full album searching by phone.)
Nope. Just stuff I’ve collected throughout the years.
Also this from my childhood. I have to play that straight through in order. NO SHUFFLING!
And also this.
And the Vince Guaraldi Peanuts album.
And the five different performances of Messiah.
I’ve got plenty to last me all year!
We bought new decorations for the tree. First big decoration purchase in ten years. Looking forward to Christmas.
Because my Christmas tree was in storage, I bought a small live tree with those really soft needles. Well, I replanted it in a bigger pot after Christmas and put it in the sun. It’s doubled in size. I’m going to have to get a larger pot for it.
I’m not groaning – IFL Christmas. Though I try to hold off until the day after Thanksgiving just to ensure it’s a rare & special time of year. But I’m tempted to have a hot beverage and watch Polar Express throughout the year.
I TRY, but I almost never make it. Last year was shit, so I wasn’t looking forward to it and I never got a Christmas boner from it, so of course it sucked.
The local scenic railroad announced they aren’t doing the Polar Express change this year, and instead replacing it with a “North Pole Adventure”.
I smell a lawsuit somewhere in that change.
So FAA is throwing incentives to get people to get their vaccinations. Time off to get the shots..20 hour time-off award when you go get it, 8-hour time off award if you were vaccinated prior to Sept 9,
What a bunch of crock
20 hour time-off award when you go get it, 8-hour time off award if you were vaccinated prior to Sept 9,
Yet again, being a good little soldier means you are a sucker.
I don’t necessarily think you’re a sucker. That’s a decent deal.
oh nm. I just got what you were saying.
That’s horseshit. I got vaksed a looong time ago – I would want my 20 fucking hours.
https://www.oann.com/demonstrators-protest-sen-manchin-over-opposition-to-3-5t-budget-plan/
Dude’s DC residence is a house boat?
I never liked the guy, but now I kinda like him a little.
Manchin is bidding his time, looking for one huge payday. His vote on the ‘destroy Murica while there’s still something left to steal’ must be worth a few billion at least. When he gets it, he’ll just sail off into the sunset in that houseboat and you’ll never hear from him again.
Stay the course, Joe. Please don’t destroy muh country.
He’ll sell out as soon as the bid is high enough. Enjoy the $15 cans of tuna and $10 loaves of bread while there’s still some on the shelves.
The good news is that this cures the immigration crisis, they’ll be no good reason for anyone to come here. The illegals that are already here will get harassed by the IRS and have their assets seized. They forgot to tell them at the border ‘all your stuff is belong to us, now get to work on my lawn, Pedro’.
He’s secretly concerned about sea level rise.
He’s going to be the first to take an actual measurement of the sea level and show us the alarming one centimeter rise over the past 3000 years.
don’t sink citizenship
How declining to make citizenship valueless somehow amounts to sinking citizenship is an exercise for the reader, I suppose.
It makes more sense when you understand that they don’t actually give a shit about that stuff. They just want power over you.
Pimp’n ain’t easy but it’s necessary…
“Infrastructure could mean anything.”
It could mean anything.
But what it actually does mean, is that they are going to tax you to death and steal the pennies from your dead eyes.
