Tales of the Belt pt. 13 Traitor

Hello, I am Zhero, this is my XO Whan, and our assistants Dgu and Trey, may we come aboard? And then they were there, right in front of us in my Stateroom, with a holographic image of Titania in the center of the group. We have seen these before, but never in such great detail.

ย To Cat and the Crew of the Leopard and Moria, greetings! There is much to discuss, and many things we can share, we are an explorer race, when we found what you call Titania we were as shocked as you, never in nature does this occur, and we have been searching for the answer ever since.

1k years and you donโ€™t know what you are dealing with? Aren’t you like Interstellar travelers? How do you not know? Oh we know what they are, we just donโ€™t know who, or why they would go to such links to protect,…ย  I have said too much, I need to consult with my Superiors, we will contact you in one Earth cycle, ย and then they were gone.ย

ย What in Mars Gates was that? We have almost no info to go on except for the one thing nagging at me. Seamus, what do you think they meant when they said protect? protect who? from what? โ€œI donโ€™t rightly know Cat, but it appears they have almost no defensive capabilities, I estimate 5 minutes tops to blow them from the skyโ€ No Seamus, not yet, we need to do this right, keep your boys ready and those plans of yours at hand, we may need em.

Funeral for a traitor

ย

โ€œCat we just had an unplanned egress at airlock 4, one soul out, presumed lostโ€ Get on it Now!

What the hell just happened? I thought as I ran to the airlock, then I saw Seamus, ashen faced, as if he had been spaced. Seamus, what happened? He held up 2 S4 shaped charges, โ€œCat I know you were smitten by the lass, but she were a spy and saboteur, my boy Calvin found her planting these in the reactor room, Woulda destroyed the ship for certain.โ€ You spaced Angelique? With no evidence that she did this? But I knew better, we have plenty of video and telemetry, and why would Seamus lie about such a thing? Jealousy? hardly, he made the right move, but damned if I wasnโ€™t fooled by the lady, probably CCP,ย  now I have no Disc partner, they really do hate me.

Truth be told

ย They arrived on time in the stateroom, only Zhero and his XO this time which was fine with me, it gets cramped in here. Time to explain Cat, you see, the Titania are located in the Oort cloud at very specific points, and have a type of variable gravity, which is constantly changing, your own ships have compensated for this according to our data. Great, they are scanning us. We also know that they are not solid Titanium, they merely mimic the element.

ย ย As time progressed, we noted a lack of disturbed orbits around each anomaly and realized that they were keeping the Oort objects from crashing into the Solar System. Granted, a few get through every cycle but it appears to be a robust defence, Humans need this Cat, there are abundant riches in the cloud, and we will point them out to you, but under no circumstances are you to attempt to mine the Anomalies, or suffer the penalties, oh no! Not from us, from them.

The devil you know

ย

ย The Tuyani, true to their word, showed us some valuable rocks that Seamus lassoed and sent homeward, so the Boys were happy, then the fun began, if you want to call it that. It seems as though the CCP were headed toward an Anomaly themselves, and the Tuyani had no defences, WTF? Zhero, what are you doing with no defence? We were hoping you could help Cat, the CCP is moving on several Anomalies, with hopes of taking them. They will be sadly mistaken, but this will shake up the Cloud in unknown ways, we need to stop it, now.

To be continued

I had this fucked up nightmare a while ago. I just decided to take a nap because I had to push some updates to prod at 8pm. So I lay down at 4pm and then about 5:30pm, my wife woke me up and was saying ‘hey, wake up, are you OK?’. Apparently I was screaming ‘Help me, help me and some other sort of unintelligible horrified stuff’. A moment later I remembered the nightmare. It was just all fucked up you know, but the gist of it was I for some reason had to enter this abandoned building and was just trying to find my way back out when I opened this door to another room and there was this dark demonic entity in there who started to attack me and I couldn’t get away from it. Jeebus *shudder*, I haven’t had a nightmare like that in as long as I can remember. I scared my wife half to death. This is what working at night does to your brain.

    • kinnath

I have a recurring nightmare. I have dreams that the country is being run by a dementia patient and a hooker.

      • db

Sometimes it can take years to recover from the mental trauma that forms that kind of dream.

      • Hyperion

I hate to break it to you, Kinnath. That’s not a dream.

      • Chafed

        Waking nightmare?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

I hate waking nightmares, I have them all the time, I’m insane,

    • slumbrew

You sound super stressed out ๐Ÿ™

      • Hyperion

Not really. I do have occasional anxiety. But that dream was a real outlier. Crazy, no idea what the fuck that was all about.

      • Hyperion

I have noticed lately that I don’t think I’m sleeping well enough. And when I had that dream, I had of course fallen into one of those super deep sleeps that you typically get intense dreams in. I wish it would have been hookers and blow and not some shit demon monster.

I probably need to start getting more sleep, planning on mentioning that to my doctor.

      • db

*doctor writes prescription for sleep study, CPAP machine vendor alerted*

      • Hyperion

I’ll also be sure to tell my doctor if I get an erection that lasts more than 4 hours.

      • Chafed

        Remember to take some pics.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        Oh, you have no idea,

    • ignoreLander

Hate to hear it brah. I know it sucks, I have night terrors, so it’s a pretty frequent occurrence with me.

      • db

I used to sit up bolt upright in the middle of the night, still sleeping, when stressed. Freaked my GF right out. I haven’t had a really bad nightmare since I left my extremely stressful job about 10 years ago.

About 2 weeks ago, I had the most incredibly realistic sex dream maybe ever. It was amazing. I’d like to have more of those.

      • Hyperion

“About 2 weeks ago, I had the most incredibly realistic sex dream maybe ever. It was amazing. Iโ€™d like to have more of those.”

They should make some sort of remote tuner where you get to select those. Having bad dream? Change the channel!

      • Not Adahn

One of the many, many perks of the Culture that I wish we had.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

I’m convinced that once, during a particularly stressful time, I sleep wrote a gibberish email to my entire department. I blamed it on my phone being compromised, but I never found any indication that it was, and the issue never happened again.

      • Hyperion

What was that sleep medicine that was making celebrities shitpost all over the internet?

      • db

        Trumpolactin?

      • Hyperion

I’m being serious. Am I the only one who remembers that? It was a real thing, where celebrities would shitpost and instead of apologizing and groveling, they would blame it on [drug name] posting.

      • slumbrew

        Ambien

      • Hyperion

        “Ambien”

Thank you. I need some for an excuse for everything. OK, who are we kidding. I’m a shitpost and never apologize.

      • slumbrew

Ambien does have a lot of weird reported side effects.

Blacked-out eating is apparently common. “Who the hell ate the whole pie that was in the refrigerator?!”

      • Chafed

        Homer Simpson hardest hit.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

I hear it’s that plus any milliliter or more of alcohol.

      • hayeksplosives

All of these tales sound like partial โ€œseizuresโ€ in the temporal lobe.

Hear me out: everyone has a โ€œseizure thresholdโ€ where brain electrical activity can cause a seizure. Also, seizures do NOT always mean the โ€œcrappie flopโ€ grand mal physical convulsions that people imagine a seizure always is.

No, a seizure is unusual rhythmic (vs random looking) brain electrical activity in a part of the brain. If itโ€™s the whole brain, then yeah you get the full body tonic-clonic no memory seizure.

But far more common is the โ€œpartialโ€ seizure, confined to one part of the brain, like the temporal lobe, left or right.

One of the biggest triggers for seizures in the temporal lobe is sleep deprivation. โ€œNormalsโ€ can get a temporal lobe seizure if stress and sleep deprivation are sufficiently prolonged. Deja Vu is a temporal lobe seizure, albeit a brief one.

So to recap, everyone has a seizure threshold. What makes people with epilepsy different is that ours is lower than that of normal people.

Also, hypergraphia (writing a ton non-stop) is part of temporal lobe epilepsy. So if you get an eeg, particularly if your doc is smart enough to order a โ€œsleep deprivedโ€ eeg, you might learn some interesting things.

      • rhywun

Iโ€™d like to have more of those.

        A-fucking-men.

      • Akira

I used to sit up bolt upright in the middle of the night, still sleeping, when stressed.

At times in my life when I’ve been extremely stressed, I have this weird thing happen where I wake up with this unshakeable feeling like I need to do something very urgently, like a bunch of people are waiting for me to take care of something. I would often sit up and look around the room for two minutes or so, sometimes even getting up and walking around before I realize that I’m just up in the middle of the night for no reason.

Another very strange dream experience: A couple of months ago, my girlfriend’s dad was actively dying so we spent pretty much all the time we could at the hospital. I laid down in a recliner in one of those family rooms, put a COVID mask over my eyes, and popped my headphones in with Dvorak’s New World Symphony to drown out the noise of everyone else talking. I quickly drifted off to sleep. At the beginning of the second movement, I had this dream that I was standing on a mountainside looking down on the most gorgeous nature scene: Grey snow-capped mountains surrounded by lush forests, waterfalls and rivers running throughout, deer stopping on the banks to drink, flocks of birds soaring through the sky… In the dream, the beauty was more than I could comprehend, and I cried tears of joy. I woke up with actual tears in my eyes (it’s unusual because I don’t recall ever crying other than from sadness or anger).

      That’s 1000% better than 97.6% of Ted’s links.

      • MikeS

        Ha! Excellent follow up.

      • MikeS

I like Todd Snider, but have only scratched the surface. His Jerry Jeff Walker tribute on SXM was very touching. I’ve been meaning to listen to more Todd, but only so may hours in the day.

      • The Hyperbole

He’s a bleeding heart lib but he writes a damn good song, If you haven’t yet, check out his double live album “The Storyteller” some great songs and some hilarious between song banter/stories. The one about being on the football team is great.

      • MikeS

Will do. Speaking of bleeding-heart lefties I put up with to listen to their music, James McMurtry is very good. Very much in the same vein as Snider. But, I assume you know that already.

      • The Hyperbole

If you’re going to steal someone’s sound why would you chose U2? Unless these guys came first, in which case they should sue U2, and then never make any music again and issue a blanket apology to everyone who had to listen to the Edge do that two note reverb/echo/whatever effect thing he beat like a dead horse for twenty plus years.

    • Chafed

Jesus. It’s been forever since I looked at Rolling Stone. This is a reminder why.

โ€œWeโ€™re going to learn so much,โ€ Harris said, telling the children they โ€œyouโ€™re going to literally see the craters on the moon with your own eyes. With your own eyes. Iโ€™m telling you.โ€

Yeah, I do that every time I look up at a moon that’s at any phase other than new.

  10. The Gunslinger

    BREAKING NEWS!

Jon Gruden is no longer coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

    • Hyperion

      You are really joking, yes???

      • The Gunslinger

        No

      • Hyperion

Please tell me it’s because of some poor play calling and not some racist #MeToo shit?

Because if not, he’ll be headcoach of the Bucs next week and they’ll win another Superbowl.

      • Urthona

They went through all his emails and he’s — you know — a dumb jock in more ways than that. Sexist,”homophobic”, etc.

He could’ve easily weathered this storm though I think. No one gives a shit about the New York Times anymore.

        He just wanted out.

      • Hyperion

He just wanted out of a 100 million dollar contract?

      • slumbrew

That contact was insane – maybe Marc came to his senses and saw a way out

      • Urthona

Apparently. I mean the media would’ve talked about this for weeks, but would any paying football fans give a shit? Not if he didn’t suck ass as a coach.

      • Hyperion

Marc didn’t come to his senses. He has a huge man crush on Gruden.

Gruden doesn’t suck as a coach. You could blame the loos to SD on bad play calling. But last week, I sat here and watched Edwards and Waller drop passes that we right on target.

This has nothing to so with bad coaching. It’s just the further deterioration of the NFL into a woke shithole.

      • Urthona

        Ok then

      • Chafed

He wanted out or got fired? There is probably an eight figure difference in the outcome.

      • rhywun

No, he’s toast. He will never work in football again.

I mean, he called Goodell a faggot, FFS.

      • Urthona

I give him points for that at least.

      • slumbrew

I heard he bad mouthed Obama – an unforgivable sin

      • Hyperion

He should have just called Goodell a fucking idiot for accuracy.

      • Urthona

Yeah. Is that his only “homophobic” comment? cause privately using that language like we did as kids… while certainly not appropriate .,. doesn’t mean he actually hates gays. He just hates Goodell. Like a sensible dude.

      • rhywun

Apparently he didn’t want “queers” in the NFL, either.

I mean, he’s probably a jerk but the NFL got a queer anyway so BFD.

    • kinnath

      who

    • slumbrew

Holy shit. A couple lines in some emails 10 years ago. Not even an NFL employee at the time.

      • Hyperion

The NFL is beyond repair. Fuck them.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

*shrug* I’m having a hard time getting worked up about it. Does anybody think the NFL isn’t woke at this point? As soon as it broke, I knew he was gonna be fired. It’s probably information somebody in the org has had for a long time and they chose the right time to publicize it to give cover to firing the guy.

      • Urthona

yeah. I mean that was a horrible loss over the weekend.

    • Urthona

I will miss his big white honky lips.

  11. Yusef drives a Kia

I think you are Silly People,
    Enjoy!

    • Hyperion

The left are a bunch of depraved degenerates. Prove me wrong.

    • db

      paywall

      • rhywun

And a sophisticated one, at that.

      • db

Yeah, you can’t even ctrl-A ctrl-C as the page is loading to get the text.

      • db

oh wait, yes you actually can. huh

      • MikeS

OMG. I didn’t know that worked. Thanks db!

      • straffinrun

        All the best porn is.

    • Urthona

Not possible. This never actually happens.

      • db

From the couple of paragraphs I was able to read before the paywall hit, he was trying to bring up what happened, right after the school board had stated outright that there had never been such an incident, after they knew that a student had been charged with forcible sodomy weeks earlier allegedly for doing that to his daughter.

Then, another person at the meeting tried to contradict him and he lost his temper, then got his ass beat and arrested, and never got to tell the real story at the meeting.

Sounds like a coverup, but a particularly inept one, to me. Maybe there’s more info further down in the article.

In any case, it’s evil that the school board would cover it up and knowingly prevent him from talking.

      • Urthona

I was being facetious but yes.

I mean the funniest part of the “it never happens” argument is we only have a window of a few years in a few places.

      • db

On May 28, Stone Bridge High School called Smith to come to the school, where they told him that his 15-year-old daughter had just been in a physical altercation in a bathroom with a male, Smith says. When he arrived, he determined that what had happened was not a case of his daughter being beaten up โ€” it was far more serious.

The school said it was handling the incident in-house. Smith was dumbfounded.

Deputies from the sheriffโ€™s office ultimately responded to the school โ€” not to investigate the alleged rape of a child โ€” Smith said, but because school administrators called them on him for making a scene about it.

Smith acknowledges he did make a scene and says any father would have done the same in the situation. โ€œI went nuts. I called the principal a pโ€”-,โ€ he said. โ€œSix cop cars showed up like a fโ€”ing SWAT teamโ€ to respond to the schoolโ€™s complaint about an assertive parent, he said.

The police department declined to provide records from that day to The Daily Wire.

โ€œThank God that I drew enough attention to it, without getting arrested, that we got an escort to the hospital and they administered a rape kit that night,โ€ Smith said. A SANE exam and buccal swab, his lawyer said, later came back favorable to the prosecutionโ€™s case.

At 4:48 p.m. on the day of the incident, the principal sent out an email to the community that claimed nothing jeopardizing student safety had occurred, painting Smith as the villain, and offering counseling services for witnesses of Smithโ€™s blowup:

        This is evil.

      • db

I can’t figure out what that means.

      • Tulip

        Public school.is child abuse

      • db

        ah. no argument here.

      • kinnath

Juvenile records are sealed, but Scottโ€™s attorney, Elizabeth Lancaster told The Daily Wire that a boy was charged with two counts of forcible sodomy, one count of anal sodomy, and one count of forcible fellatio, related to an incident that day at that school.

        A shooting offense

      • db

        Get this:

Lancaster told The Daily Wire that she accompanied Smithโ€™s daughter to meetings with prosecutors, that the suspect made self-incriminating statements in an interview, that prosecutors brought the charges, and that a conviction was expected imminently, likely in the form of a plea deal to a charge of felony aggravated sexual battery.

Smith had not opposed the downgrade, saying about the boy, โ€œWhat if he made one mistake?โ€

This guy went way beyond the level of forgiveness that most people could offer.

I suspect this is how the Catholic Church was able for so many decades to cover up their abuses. I happen to know that in my parish growing up, one family was cajoled, coerced, and finally convinced to keep it secret in the best interests of the community.

      • MikeS

I hesitate to call people evil, but damn…if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck…

      • straffinrun

        and fucks like a duck…

    • commodious spittoon

Trans rights activists want to give male sex offenders access to female inmates. They’re offering up confined victims to convicted victimizers because to do otherwise would raise questions they’d rather not consider. Of course they don’t care if your precious teenage daughter is raped in the school bathroom.

      • commodious spittoon

This is so dumb and does not make me laugh.

    • creech

I had a conversation with a trans gender bathroom activist a year or two ago about such a situation. Her comment was that girls have showered for years, without complaint, with lesbians who looked at their naked bodies with lust, and boys had showered with gay guys who had done the same. (Yeah, but we once beat up a guy – presumably gay – who used to walk around in the gym showers and ‘check you out.” ) I guess her point was that Americans had never objected to being seen naked by same gender folks as long as their sexual impulses were kept under control, and that therefore straight guys should be allowed to take showers with straight girls as long as they didn’t touch them. I don’t think the guys would mind.

      • commodious spittoon

That is the aggressive retardation that insists it’s okay for a man to beat the shit out of women as long as he identified as female six seconds before the fight.

I’ll take my chances with a rapist gay dude making the rounds in the locker room. I don’t want my nieces taking theirs with a rapist straight dude who pretends to be, maybe even imagines himself to be, a woman.

      • rhywun

Um… glosses over the fact that a man in a dress is not, actually, a woman.

      • slumbrew

        So hurtful

      • straffinrun

        What is it?

      • straffinrun

Your social norms are bougie. After the revolution, we wonโ€™t even be sexually aroused by genitalia.

    • MikeS

That is fucking enraging. The left is actually losing their minds. A raped 15 year old girl is apparently just collateral damage.

    • Hyperion

That has to be one of the dumbest fucking things I’ve ever seen. And that’s saying a lot.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

They need jobs or owners, Dog behaviour……

      • straffinrun

        You mad.

    • slumbrew

So dumb. And yet I was laughing.

    • straffinrun

That is a good test for finding people who takes themselves too seriously.

      • slumbrew

That dude who was ready to throw down is clearly an asshole

      • MikeS

Yes. I could see myself giving an eye roll or a flipping a little birdie if they caught me in a bad mood, but the stare down and door opening was WAY over the top. He’ll likely end up in jail or the hospital before he’s 30.

      • slumbrew

Eye roll would be my bad-mood limit

      • straffinrun

By noon tomorrow I will be shed of these ulcers. Sadly, tomorrow is Tuesday and Tuesdays have never really been kind to me, so I’m thinking I should have chosen a Thursday. Thursdays are nice.

    • MikeS

Go get well, Mo! Imma dust off my praying ability and say one for you.

      • Mojeaux

Thank you! I am terribly excited to get these things gone.

That call against the Red Sox was utter bullshit. They want this to go 5 games.

  15. slumbrew

Woot! Sox win! On to the ALCS.

I was really not expecting that.

    • MikeS

      Yes! Go White Sox!!!!

      • slumbrew

We could see some hot Sox on Sox action.

      • rhywun

Wait a minute… is baseball about to get interesting?

      • slumbrew

        Probably not

      • MikeS

Oh. Didn’t know the White Sox were in it. Go Sox’x

Every action the government takes can be explained to children by telling them the story of the old lady who swallowed a fly.

    • Plinker762

I don’t know why you would say that.

  17. straffinrun

Whoโ€™s with me? Time to go post libertarian and win. Once you give up that pesky โ€œDonโ€™t use violence against peaceful peopleโ€ thingy, a bunch of new opportunities arise.

    • slumbrew

      Tempting… but no.

    • commodious spittoon

The GOP has a lock on the graceful loser ticket, so what we Libertarians need to do to differentiate ourselves is be a much less compelling knockoff Democrat party. We’ll exploit the vacuum created by the left-of-center and extremely-left-of-center duopoly by being more left-of-center than the left-of-center party but marginally less left-of-center extreme party, and we’ll rake in maybe four or even six percent of the vote.

    • Q Continuum

Freedom is a shitty message. Revealed preference: people don’t like it.

  19. PieInTheSky

So this morning I made my pour over coffee at 95 instead of the usual 90 C and it does seem a slightly more intense taste I will do 95 for a few days see if I should switch

    • PieInTheSky

      Good morning glibs.

      • R C Dean

        Morning, Pie.

I mean, if you say so. I just got home from the office.

      • PieInTheSky

I mean it is dark outside but morning dark not evening dark.

    • rhywun

My current grind (a “house dark”) is pretty intense already so I think I’ll wait until I have weaker one to up my regular temp.

      Mornin’.

      • PieInTheSky

I always use light roast Kenyan or Ethiopian coffee and I read online when I googled that lighter roasts can use a higher temp

      • R C Dean

Lighter roast, hotter water, would be my suggestion. Iโ€™m working a medium roast Peruvian that is excellent. Unfortunately, when itโ€™s gone, itโ€™s gone. No more where it came from.

      • straffinrun

I just wait until the water boils. You guys are awfully accurate.

      • rhywun

        Heathen.

      • straffinrun

Unless you have done a legit blind taste test, Iโ€™m not buying that it makes a big difference. My buddies and I do blind beer testing every Saturday night. Itโ€™s amazing how far off we are in terms of what we thought we liked and what the test reveals.

      • R C Dean

Fair enough. It would be interesting. Not sure how to put together a test of coffee brewed at different temps, though.

      • straffinrun

Youโ€™d have to get someone to make 4 or 5 different styles for you and then run the test a few times on different days I suppose. Then again, if you think you like it the way you are making it now, then thatโ€™s the way you like it.

      • R C Dean

The Technivorm delivers 205 degree water.

      • rhywun

The results are in. Same grind, same amount of water, same pouring technique, 200F instead of 175F.

        Vast improvement.

      • db

        Excellent!

    • hayeksplosives

Welcome to the East Bloc, comrade. You should be thankful for what youโ€™ve got.

Question for the Glibs who were adults during the Carter administration: was it the same as now, back then? Worse? Better?

We did, as a nation, swing back better. I just want some hope to cling to.

      • dbleagle

Worse now than then. It was pretty shitty with stagflation, the “misery index”, a person obviously not us for the job as POTUS (like today), and remains of disco carried on. But we still had the buzz from the Bicentennial and pride in America for 200 years, most people thought things would get better even if they weren’t sure just how; and the arts were not dominated by “wokeitude” and recycling of earlier movies etc. We were in the Cold War and the USSR looked pretty scary, but we were not dependent on them economically. Plus as bad as a president Carter was (and he was terrible) he did deregulate the beer, rail and airline industries which would improve life until IPA’s became overhopped, and because of standards of passenger service one wished they were getting on Greyhound instead of most US airlines.

Today the crazy left ideas of student radicals are discussed as serious policy options, the corpse of Marxism has broken free of the grave because of the “western” left across the world, the idea of personal autonomy is regarded as evil by many, too many people find freedom as scary and want mommy and daddy government to “protect me and hurt them”.

But on the positive side of the ledger- information travels much more easily now, Eastern Europe is free, the specter of nuclear war involving the US is lower than then, the private space industry is taking baby steps, life for teh gays and women is much less restrained by law and cultural norms, and disco remains moribund outside of YT.

      • Akira

        ntil IPAโ€™s became overhopped

Good god, I’m glad someone else recognizes this. It’s like making chili with an absurd amount of heat that overpowers every other flavor, then someone else tries to add even more heat, and pretty soon chili just burns your mouth off and tastes of literally nothing else.

      • limey

        That sums it up well

      • db

I absolutely love hops, but what has happened to IPAs in the US is a tragedy. It’s exactly like you say–make the hot sauce as hot as you can as a competition, not to make a flavorful and enjoyable product.

      • Tres Cool

Wasn’t it Reagan that de-regulated phone services and broke up Ma Bell ?

      • The Hyperbole

I think it happened during his term but the groundwork was laid earlier.

      • Gustave Lytton

No, the court case started in the mid 70’s. AT&T was quite happy at the end to dump the albatross Bell operating companies (local telephone service) so they could make bank in the lucrative computer equipment, information services, and long distance. Didn’t quite work out the way they thought it would.

      • db

If you read “Raven Rock,” there is some interesting information in there that supports the argument that the US gov blocked and slow played the breakup because of the very secret emergency ground-based communications systems that were built to survive a nuclear war, and surreptitiously funded and disguised as civilian comms. Breaking up that monopoly would have made it vastly more difficult to maintain the secrecy of those systems. It wasn’t until satellite comms became robust enough to abandon the hard wires in most places that the breakup was allowed to proceed, according to the author.

      • hayeksplosives

Thank you for the thoughtful answer, Dbleagle.

โ€œthe idea of personal autonomy is regarded as evil by many, too many people find freedom as scary and want mommy and daddy government to โ€œprotect me and hurt themโ€.โ€

I have to believe that the pendulum will swing backโ€”itโ€™s our only hope. But with public education and journalism being what they are right now, Iโ€™m not sure brains are growing the neural pathways needed to process reality.

      • limey

There is a certain amount of ugliness in the possibility of some poorly articulated backlash when that pendulum swings back. Human nature being what it is, some of those who are ideologicaly in favor of freedom have some pretty big blind spots when it comes to their own (our own?) prejudices and assumptions. I don’t believe that describes us Glibs in any massively significant way, although we too are only human, but it is worth thinking about. There will be a return to factions, too (not that it’s ever an extreme one way or the other) should the common adversaries no longer be perceived pose such an existential threat.

Perhaps there will be a return to school board meetings like that scene from Field of Dreams? Vintage “so-con”. I really don’t know how representative that is of those days.

      • TARDis

        pendulum swings back

It seems to me that overtime this happens, another chunk of personal freedom is sliced out of the middle class. The ratchet just keeps on clicking.

      • TARDis

        …every time…

      • db

Yeah, I still remember when my Dad told me, when I was in elementary school, that the pendulum swings. In the 40+ years since, I’ve observed it never fully swings back to the right.

      • Tres Cool

I was a kid during those years, so the things that affect me now didnt resonate back then. But I do remember Tres Sr. constantly bitching about prices of goods and services. And Mama Tres cursing under her breath at the grocery over food prices.

        How YOU doin’ ?

      • Ghostpatzer

A little of both, mostly better. Cost of healthcare was still reasonable, so less fear of unemployment. It was possible to discuss issues in a somewhat civil manner. Punk on the rise, disco on the decline. On the downside, stagflation and gas rationing. I’ll never forget running out of gas coming back from Atlantic City and pushing my friend’s car 2 miles up the Turnpike to get our 2 gallon allotment at the next rest stop. You were allowed to purchase fuel on alternate days based on your license plate (odd/even). Fun times.

    • rhywun

  24. limey

This is developing well, Yusef. Something put me in mind of Freecloud from the non-canon* Patrick Stewart vehicle that is Star Trek: Picard. I sort of liked the idea to include such a place in the Star Trek universe. I was surprised the ship didn’t have an ad blocker installed.

In 2201, a short five-sentence constitution was ratified, calling for universal service by all able-bodied citizens after they turned sixteen years of age in the Freecloud Defense Network.

I’m not a huge fan of that part. I’d be interested to read about a fictional “libertarian” planet written from a sympathetic point of view.

    • The Hyperbole

The Donovan series by W. Michael Gear has a bit of that, It’s only a colony/expedition/outpost that gets abandoned and organize themselves in a fairly libertarian manner but it’s not a planet wide advanced society with cities, industries and such, so small scale.

If you haven’t already seen it Midnight Mass is a better Netflix show IMHO.

      • Festus

Looked incredibly silly to me but what the hell would I know?

    • TARDis

Definitely not must see, but we enjoyed it. The dubbing is pretty bad, but we’ve been enjoying several badly dubbed foreign shows lately. It’s comedic in a way. Nice little twist at the end. I will give the second season a go.

Doctor Buck entered the room and the the tiny Fillapina nurse felt an electric shock pulse through her loins as he ran his strong finger up her spine. Don’t worry about that silly Mormon, she’s dead to the world. We can take our time. Dr. Buck playfully flicked Isabelle’s shirt buttons open, one by one. His hands were so strong and he stood at least a foot taller than her. She dropped the tray from her hands and furtively checked the door. Soon you will belong to me “Doctor”. Soon.
