Saturday evening, Spud’s back links

Nothing to see here.

Having safely returned from a rousing, multi-day game of smash liver, I am here to provide a few links. OMWC, SP and Webdom continue to be just superb hosts.

FFS. This is pay walled, but the headline says it all.

I’m fixed, but I’m so totally getting one of these.

I don’t know if this should be a head on desk moment, or a moment of glee.

I’ve never lived a lifestyle where this would have been necessary, but okay.

I love my town.

You know who else built they’re own meat plant?

There is absolutely no downside to this at all.

And lastly, a shout out to FourScore. Your honey played a prominent role as an ingredient last week. And I just wanted to let you know that was the finest honey I have ever eaten in my life. It was the taste and smell of my childhood, roaming through the woods and underbrush of the Napa Valley. Bravo, Sir!

How about a little ancient Billy Joel today?

    My favorite picture of Swissy.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

At least Glinda didn’t spill his red wine on himself.

Hey, speaking of prepping, add to your cellar!

      • Trigger Hippie

Red Wine? Turnips? Cucumbers pickled? Ammo? I’m a terrible shot and wine gives me a wicked hangover so I only purchase it two or three times a year. I’m a cheap date in regards to wine. Anything more expensive than $30 a bottle is lost on me.

Also, I rent for cash off the books. I have no cellar.

      • Spudalicious

        We eat you first.

      • Trigger Hippie

        Kinky.

      • Trigger Hippie

        Dammit!

Forgot to add the obligatory Frank Drebin:

“Kinky. But I like my sex the way I like my basketball. One on one and with as little dribbling as possible”

I just noticed, “Every man has a right to his own destiny, until it crosses into another man’s.”

      Gordon R. Dickson in “Dorsai!”.

    • J. Frank Parnell

      Ayn Marley?

I shot the sheriff because he was in the process of enforcing a statist system of institutionalized violence which I was forced to fight against using my individual right to self defense. I did not shoot the deputy, as he properly recognized that the proper role of government is to protect the rights of the individual against violence by force or fraud.

‘…the bond between the soldier and his neodog (or “caleb”) is more intense than any human marriage or relationship. If the master is killed, the neodog is killed at once. If the dog is killed, doctors restrain the master and slowly put his mind back together.’

There was a town in Idaho that didn’t allow shooting on your property? What the fuck?

    • hayeksplosives

I have heard Californians are going to Idaho in droves and fucking it up.

Hey, fellow Californian emigrants: we are refugees, not missionaries.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

“we are refugees, ” I never forget that, the people here are uncommonly nice, it feels strange not to be paranoid,
As much as I love my Home, California died many years ago for me,

      • Animal

I have heard Californians are going to Idaho in droves and fucking it up.

Well, they certainly did that to Colorado. That’s one of the reasons we left.

Fortunately they don’t seem to be able to withstand the winters up here in the Great Land.

There will be a special video presentation from a cabin in the woods around 8:30.

    • Spudalicious

Okay, duck lips are now officially a turnoff for me.

  7. Jerms

Spuds—just curious, did you meet OMWC and SP on here? At TOS or in real life?

    • Spudalicious

I’ve known OMWC since the early ’90s. We met on a pre-internet service called Prodigy, which had a wine board hosted by world renowned wine critic, Robert Parker. The rest is history.

SP and Webdom are just delightful additions to the friendship, and dear friends in their own right.

      • Trigger Hippie

Okay, I have to ask. I’ve once seen mention of the claim on this site that one of TPTB here lays claim to the patent for the plumping effect in a Ballpark Frank. I’ve always suspected that it was you.

Please feel free to respond or not respond in the manner you most feel comfortable with… aka…silence or a hearty helping of Piss Off. No butthurt on my end.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

the plumping effect in a Ballpark Frank

I didn’t know that the “two balls and a strike” fluffing method was patentable.

That was Q. He was working on enhancing penis size. Science doesn’t always take a straight path.

      • Spudalicious

BWAHAHAHA!!!! That’s friggin’ awesome. I just don’t have anywhere near that talent. No worries.

      • Ownbestenemy

Prodigy….I think I had my first cybersex on that

      • slumbrew

You still in touch with that dude?

      • slumbrew

        (spoiler: that was a dude)

      • Ownbestenemy

        Hahaha no doubt.

      • Homple

I used Prodigy, starting with a 1200 bd Hayes Smartmodem. Much has changed since then.

      • slumbrew

I remember my friend’s dad connecting to The Source with the acoustic-coupler modem on their new Atari 800. Totally futuristic.

Three hours to update on a forum that now takes about ten minutes.

  8. Zwak, sensual panzer

I had no idea you were from Napa. It’s odd growing up in places that later become super expensive and desirable. I can’t understand any of my friends who go back to SLO, it’s so expensive and fake now. A little finger of LA sneaking up the coast, destroying all it sees.

    • UnCivilServant

So what you’re saying is we should nuke the big costal coastal cities to save the country (including big lakecoasts)?

      • hayeksplosives

Lex Luthor (Hackman edition) knew what was what.

      • UnCivilServant

        Oh, I remember – Otiscity

        Ostrythe?

I’ve always liked that word. If I ever have a son with a Scandinavian chick I’ll name the kid Ostrythe.

    • Ownbestenemy

SLO used to be so idyllic and awesome.

Nothing says “welcome to your new home and new job ❤️“ quite like “Now take the right exit to Death Valley Road.”

    Wish us luck…

      Good luck.

Somewhere but it’s lost in a deep hole

      • Spudalicious

That is certainly a theme song for something.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

I saw that on the map, very cool IMO,

This is what a prominent pro-Putin Russian politician, a member of the ruling United Russia party, says about the vaccination campaign in Russia.

The Russian authorities have lost the campaign to inform the population about the coronavirus, methods of countering it and vaccination. This was stated by the Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Pyotr Tolstoy on the air of the NTV channel, a fragment of which he published in your Telegram channel.

“In my opinion, we need to speak more harshly: unfortunately, we conducted the entire information campaign about the coronavirus in Russia incorrectly and completely lost. There is no trust of people to go and give the vaccine. This is a fact, ”Tolstoy said.

At the same time, he noted that it is necessary to express deep gratitude to all those who are fighting for the lives of people, no matter what. Tolstoy explained that he agreed with the position of Russian President Vladimir Putin on the voluntary decision of each person to vaccinate.

“But we have thinking people, they weigh the pros and cons, they try to ask questions. Unfortunately, there is little information, few answers to the questions: “Why do those who are vaccinated get sick?”, “Why do those who are vaccinated die?”, “Why are there problems and complications after the vaccinations themselves?”

In his opinion, experts from the medical community were not ready for such a situation, they chose the wrong rhetoric when communicating with the population. “They approach this campaign like a conversation between a local doctor and some under-examined patient. It seems to me that the people in Russia are much smarter, and we need to talk much deeper and more reasoned than now. Only then can you get some kind of citizens’ confidence in the vaccination procedure, ”Tolstoy summed up.

Compare this to how the US rulers talk about their unvaccinated subjects.

    • rhywun

      experts from the medical community…

…were hand-picked by the government for their willingness to lie to the people, if they’re anything like ours.

I had customers last year who were saying that it was going to be up to a year to get their livestock slaughtered. They said the butchers were closing down, or something, because of regulations.

    • MikeS

Anecdotally speaking, there’s been a slow death of the local butcher for decades now, and everything I’ve read and heard is it’s due to the ever more complex (read: more expensive to conform with) standards.

  12. Hyperion

“Having safely returned from a rousing, multi-day game of smash liver”

Is it really possible to even damage that organ? I’ve drank enough alcohol to float me on a large ship from here to Europe and my liver function is 100%. Just had it checked again, not even a trace of fatty liver. What the fuck? Do you have to drink a gallon of 100% pure alcohol a day for 40 year or something to actually kill that thing?

    • UnCivilServant

I don’t know, but my uncle managed, and he had to get a new one.

      • Hyperion

I don’t get it. Alcohol did manage to damage my heart , but I completely recovered from that, while still drinking. Damaged my kidneys also, but it’s so minor that it doesn’t matter.

Amazing that drinking a powerful neurotoxin every day could hurt you, but it is what it is.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I only drink beer, but I drink a lot, every day, I seem to work just fine, YMMV,

      • Hyperion

        “I only drink beer”

Me too. It’s not good for you, but…

      • Yusef drives a Kia

But, it still has food value, and the low ABv, doesn’t get you as fast,

      • Chafed

        Wolverine status confirmed.

      • Spudalicious

I have dealt with a number of patients that drank themselves to death. It pretty much tends to be a lifestyle.

      • Hyperion

It actually killed my brother. Or at least that’s what they said. I don’t even know what actually happened, but they said it was his liver.

      • Fourscore

My brother died from cirrhosis, hadn’t had a drink in 35-40 years. He was also diabetic, did not take care of that problem, either.

  13. Hyperion

I want to see Chuckie as NFL commissioner. I’m one sick mofo I know, but not nearly as sick as the pussies who run the NFL.

  14. slumbrew

A-Rod was a good player but he’s just cring as a commentator.

  15. Fourscore

Good to hear that you made the trip safely, both ways, Spud. Rumor has it that the liver is recoverable but it takes time and a terrible remedy.

This ain’t your father’s Napa Valley but it is what it is. Winters are brutal, summer’s mosquitoes are unbearable. Warn your old friends back in CA not to attempt a move, too dangerous. For the Glibs, however, there is a honeymoon shanty that stays empty most of the time.

Optimistically, I bought a deer hunting license yesterday, only 3 more weeks of waiting.

    • R C Dean

Every deer license is bought optimistically.

Good on ya. Now you’ve got the option to go hunting. Git ‘em!

  16. Tundra

    Hiya Spud!

You know who else built they’re own meat plant?

No clue, but Massie has been pushing his PRIME act for years. It would solve this bullshit once and for all.

    (Their)

I got my Fourscore package, too. Absolutely amazing.

Trying to decide if I’m gonna subscribe to ESPN+ for the hockey. I haven’t watched a game since 3/20.

    Thoughts?

    • Ownbestenemy

So we got ESPN+ but it’s so sporadic on if we get the Kings. Black out if they are playing Vegas. I’ll go back to free streams…I don’t care about if I’m stealing.

      • Ownbestenemy

Know what I would love to see…Kopitar and Ovechkin on the same team. Both can command the ice and puck and Kopi can just feed Ovi to propell him past Gretzsky hahaha

      • Tundra

So what are you saying? If I’m in CO, will I get MN games?

      • Ownbestenemy

I really don’t know lol. I’ve had it for a week to try out. Since we are playing you tonight I guess I’ll see if it is a game they carry.

      • rhywun

In my experience ESPN+ blacked out local games. Which didn’t affect me because cable has regional networks that show all the locals games.

    • rhywun

I liked ESPN+ until they jacked up the fee by something like 40% this year. Dropped it out of spite.

I get all the hockey I could want on cable. I had ESPN+ mostly for soccer and tennis but I can live without.

    • Chafed

How much woke are you willing pay for?

  17. R C Dean

I’m all packed up for my trip to Pahrump.

I’ll be incommunicado for the week. Four day combat shotgun class. Woo-hoo!

    • Ownbestenemy

Enjoy! If swinging thru Vegas either on way or out let me know.

      • R C Dean

Vegas is on the travel route, so I’ll be driving straight through. We’re planning a trip with a Vegas stopover, though.

    • JaimeRoberto (shama/lama/ding dong)

Iowa Hawkeyes get exposed, along with the “College Ratings” voters. Iowa, #3 last week, was getting pasted at home by #4 Penn State until State’s star quarterback went down. Iowa managed to pull it out, and gets rewarded by moving up to #2. Visitng unranked Purdue walks all over them today; Iowa shouldn’t be in Top 10.

    • trshmnstr the terrible

Espn’s football Power index had them at a much more reasonable 13. Purdue is probably going to end up being a 7 win team this year, so it’s not a horrible loss, but that ends Iowa’s CFP aspirations a la Ohio state in 2018.

But our furniture moving truck arrives Monday, so we will still be in the Best Western for a couple of days.

When I checked in tonight the front desk gal saw I had pre paid a “pet” . I confirmed Yes a cat. Big mistake. She said they don’t take cats, and I showed on their website that they did.

I just cut-up, trimmed (to the best of my ability) an 18 lb brisket. Jugsy is pissing and moaning about her sore arm from Vax #deux.

        Yvonne Craig is dead.

Fun fact- both Julie Newmar and Yvonne Craig appeared on Star Trek. Julie was the pregnant broad that said “Mah-Coy” and of course Yvonne was the slutty green chic.

I got a pair of porterhouses and some burgers to grill today.
