Flight of the Valkyries

Everyone complains about these but sometimes it can be fun.

This is my review of Tombstone Brewing Buck Nutty Nut Brown Ale:

Last Sunday the Tennessee Titans had a flyover from the 101st Airborne that ruffled a few feathers.

But now NewsChannel 5 Investigates has discovered one recent flyover by the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell may have crossed the line — from dramatic to dangerous.

“General reaction, yeah, it was unsafe,” said Larry Williams, a retired aviation safety inspector with the Federal Aviation Administration. “It was very dangerous.”

So how low were they?

Relax. We’re professionals here…

The link above has a video of the flyover it in real time.  What I thought was fun was the Army’s response:

Lt. Col. Kari McEwen, 101st Airborne Division spokesperson, downplayed the concerns.

“The unit that conducted the flyover is in contact with the FAA Nashville,” McEwen said. “At this time, there is no scheduled review.”

“We reviewed ourselves and found we did nothing wrong.”  The costs to the taxpayer for these shows are at least are baked in to already existing training costs, at least in some cases.  So if we are stuck with slack jawed yokels flying in to the sounds of Rock you like a Hurricane, lets at least make them entertaining.  Buzz the stadium.  Pop some smoke.  Hit the afterburners.

Its not like these guys are doing anything productive anyways.

Normally I like this style but this one I found to be a bit off.  It is done well but this one wasn’t sweet so much as it was rich.  Not a lot of hops to balance out the nuttiness but that’s normal.  I think I might have been expecting a bit more bite with the relatively high abv (7.0%).  More alcohol means more sugar.  Still, if its on tap I can see myself picking it up again even if I wasn’t blown away.  As I said, I generally like the style. Now that is a fly over. Good stuff

Sporting News- another fucking shitshow website.

Who makes these things? Methhead teenagers?

Not everybody has unlimited bandwidth, you know.

“We reviewed ourselves and found we did nothing wrong.”

Procedures were followed. They weren’t trained to know anything was wrong. hth. smooches. kthxbye

    • Bobarian LMD

      Fuck those bunches of nancies!

Those are tactical helicopters, all of which could have landed right in the stadium.

That wasn’t even NOE. (Nap of the Earth).

  4. Ted S.

Now mock kneeling for the national anthem, or forcing everybody to buy into your political protest the way Raheem Sterling is doing in England.

    • mexican sharpshooter

I could but that would make me racist by contemporary definitions.

    • rhywun

What is he up to now? Can’t stand him.

      • Ted S.

Isn’t he the one who led the whole kneeling thing? My understanding is they’re still doing it.

      • rhywun

No idea. I don’t watch Man City. But yes, it is still de rigeur at every match.

Last I remember he got someone sent to jail for “racism”.

  5. LCDR_Fish

Didn’t see a flyover clip at the link. And wth is the 101st flying anyways? They don’t own any airplanes – maybe some helos.

    • OBJ FRANKELSON

They are an Air Assault division, they are designed to be entirely airmobile, ala 1st Cavalry Division in ‘nam. Lots of helos.

      • OBJ FRANKELSON

That is some proper Soldiering right there!

I imagine that the Eastern Europeans did not think that having a bunch of drunken soldiers around was anything out of the ordinary.

      • Gustave Lytton

Who hasn’t lost an XO and not noticed they were gone? Although the classic “I was drugged” works about as well as “my credit card was stolen” in avoiding strip club charges.

      • UnCivilServant

Just unbox another Major and file an insurance claim on the lost one.

      • LCDR_Fish

Yeah, is it a helo flyover? Some of the pics look like planes.

      • Bobarian LMD

It was. Two Apaches, a Crashhawk and a Shithook.

And they were above the stadium by at least 100 feet.

    • kinnath

I don’t see the link either.

      • Rat on a train

That’s not low for helicopters. I watched Apache pilots playing leapfrog during training exercises. They would drop down and hover between trees to hide. The could have easily dipped down toward the field.

      • db

It isn’t low for helicopters, but it’s quite low for “densely populated areas.” I’m quite surprised the ATC in charge of the TFR there would authorize such a low pass. They can’t waive safety requirements for stuff like that.

      • Ownbestenemy

1000 ft above tallest structure in their flight path….they were more likely 50-100 feet below. Awesome, but unnecessary

    • Threedoor

More helicopters than any other nation are based at Ft Campbell. At least that’s what they told us when I was there.

  6. UnCivilServant

I have a smoked pheasant in the fridge, and no idea how to serve it for dinner. I’ve got to do something with it soon, so I’m going to risk asking the glibertariat for recommendations.

    • Ted S.

Isn’t pheasant traditionally served under glass?

      • LCDR_Fish

        Thats only ‘peasant’.

    • Animal

You’re smoking pheasants? That must involve some really big rolling paper.

      • UnCivilServant

        No, this one was pre-smoked.

      • Nephilium

So it’s stored in a balloon?

    • Suthenboy

Bake pheasant and save drippings. I season poultry often with black pepper and lime seasoning ( https://spicehunter.com/products/pepper-key-lime-blend )

heat drippings in a small pan, add in a couple of teaspoons of flour, some finely diced sweet onion and stir over medium heat. When the onion is clear add in between a cup to a cup and a half of chicken stock, a teaspoon of kitchen bouquet and a pinch or two of ground cayenne. Check for salt and pepper, add if necessary. That is the basic recipe. Adding in a couple of tablespoons of this makes it even better ( https://shop.savoiesfoods.com/savoie's-rice-dressing-mix-mild ) <—- ground giblets, unseasoned

You can experiment with aromatic spices like cinnamon, allspice, clove or nutmeg (my favorite) but go easy. A little aromatic goes a long way.

      There is your gravy.

Side1 – asparagus wrapped in bacon and baked.
Side2 – light salad – sweet bell, lettuce and extra sweet cherry tomatoes. Add in some walnuts or pecans for fun. : raspberry vinaigrette dressing.

There is your meal – sweet, sour, salty, hearty and light
If you want to get fancier stuff the bird with apples or oranges and some onion.
You could have a lot of fun playing around with a bird like that.

      • UnCivilServant

The bird is already cooked, so baking it would probably prodice few drippings and dry it to hell at this point. That was part of my dilemma.

      • Suthenboy

Ah. So, just make the gravy. Make your roux with sesame oil.

    • Loveconstitution1789

Cream of mushrooms with drippings to form a gravy is good.

  7. dbleagle

From OMWC’s links. Never shoot a “golf course” or college campus deer since the meat is awful. All the chemicals used in fertilizer and pesticides make the meat literally smell. A friend offered me some venison in NC and when I defrosted it I gagged from the chemical smell. I called him and asked him WTF was up with that animal he admitted he got it at the edge of a golf course (archery). Later he threw it out because even his dogs were reluctant to eat it.

Superman & Lois appears to be a terrible reboot of the Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman format, except it’s moved on some and they have two teenage boys, and Clark gets fired from the Daily Planet, and his mom dies. Too sad. I miss Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher.

    • Chipping Pioneer

      Clark should learn to code.

    • Nephilium

Give it some time. I watched the first season, and it grew into itself. And I generally consider Superman a bad character to use.

Stargirl on the other hand, has been brilliant.

    • Suthenboy

Oh look, more recycling of old stories/characters etc.
I fell asleep reading that. I guess they are saving me on my ambien prescription.

    OK, then.

I need help finding a new job. My employer announced, in an email sent out Friday at 5:15, that they would be voluntarily going along with the OSHA emergency reg.

I’m fully vaccinated (until they change the definition), so I’m not facing any deadlines, but I think it’s time to look for greener pastures.

Are there job boards or good search strategies anyone would recommend?

    • Ted S.

I think somebody linked over on the forum to a no-vax-required job search site.

    • Threedoor

Red Balloon. It’s small for now.

      • Ownbestenemy

        Thanks Mojeaux

    • R C Dean

      What field?

    • trshmnstr the terrible

If you have any insights for how to broach such topics during the hiring process, I’d be interested in hearing them. Im in a little bit of a different position because I didn’t get the shots, but I’m not sure how/when to broach the issue with a company interested in hiring me.

      • R C Dean

What’s wrong with “l’m not vaccinated. I’m not going to get vaccinated. Is that going to be an issue?”

      • UnCivilServant

I think “My personal health decisions are none of my employer’s business outside of the impact on my availablilty.” is more appropriate.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

I’m fine with that, but do I say that on the first interview or when I ask for compensation plan info after a tentative offer has been extended.

      • Nephilium

From the random contractor job e-mails I get, I’ve noticed some include a blurb about requiring all applicants to be fully vaxxed, while others say nothing. I wouldn’t volunteer any of my medical information to them during an interview process before, I don’t see why I would start doing it now. I figure if it’s a requirement, they should be up front with it, it will be included in the offer letter, or it would be in the compensation package (under the health care benefits).

      • R C Dean

I wouldn’t assume that. This is a go/ no go issue for some companies. Get it clear up front.

If you want something a little less explicit, maybe “does your company have a vaccine requirement? Is it subject to any of the federal requirements now being litigated?”

        Don’t pussyfoot around, though.

      • Lackadaisical

^this, particularly the latter question. It’s agnostic related to your views of the vaccine, but you find out what you need to know.

I didn’t know there was a Chinook in that flyover. That’s make a big hole in the endzone.

Fun to ride in. I wish I had had more opportunities to be cargo.

  12. Yusef the Unclean

My cat escaped last night, and she usually runs around and is on the porch the next morning, hungry. I walked the entire park and asked some neighbors, but no Sophie, Now I’m concerned.

    • Threedoor

That sucks. The male that moved into our shop and gets along with our girls the middle of the year has been AWOL for a week now. He keeps the Toms away which is nice. Hope we see him soon.

      • Yusef the Unclean

Unless she went traveling, there is no real road traffic, and I didn’t find a body, so I’m hoping.

      • hayeksplosives

My kitty gave me a scare a couple of nights ago. We try to get him in before dark but distant manage it, so he ended up staying out all night, even though it was cold. I got up every couple of hours to check for him, but no luck.

Then in the morning, I found him curled up on the outdoor couch as if nothing had happened.

        Sophie will be back…

    • Loveconstitution1789

Check at night. We tap canned food lids to the can as most cats that get canned food know that noise.

Once the cat gets really hungry it will make its way closer to your house.

I was discriminated against today. I decided that I needed some new clothes, and given my current state, I decided to try some maternity clothes. I am carrying The First That Will Change Everything to term. I was trying on outfits in front of the mirror at Walmart. A woman pushing a stroller in the baby section started mumbling something. I couldn’t make out what it was, and she walked away. I thought that was strange, but went on with my task. But then an employee approached me asking if everything was ok. And if I needed to be pointed to the men’s section. I told her know, I am a pregnant man. I need maternity clothes and I expect to be left to shop in peace. The employee? She rolled her eyes at me.

There is too much bigotry in this world.

      • hayeksplosives

Yeah the comments are tiresome. The usual “How could you be so insensitive after recent gun deaths?”, never stopping to think that the difference is that Massie and co. aren’t murderers, but the murderers, well, are.

It’s almost as if the crimes are the fault of the criminals and not the guns…

I mean, you’re already asking for it by reading Twitter. Reading the comments? What do you expect, transcendent wisdom?

      • UnCivilServant

There is postulated to be a point where sheer stupidity loops around and becomes genious.

    • rhywun

      How white of them.

    • EvilSheldon

Damn, son! I always thought that Massie was pretty cool, but there’s cool, and then there’s ‘owning an M60’ cool.

      • UnCivilServant

There’s an even cooler state – getting rid of the laws that prevent others from owning an M60 too.

      • Threedoor

        This.

  15. Nephilium

Managed to check out a new(er) brewery on my way back from picking up the quarterly mead club membership. The schwarzbier wasn’t bad, the pilsner was good enough I brought a crowler home, and I was mildly entertained that the missed the mark with a Kolsch, so they named it Klosch** and labeled it as a golden ale.

    • mexican sharpshooter

      I wish others did that.

      • Nephilium

I doubt they’ll make it again, the brewery has only been open for a couple of months, so they’ll probably tweak the recipe and try again to nail it. I do appreciate them labeling it correctly and not pushing out something that doesn’t meet the style.

    • EvilSheldon

It doesn’t get said often enough – small town brewpubs are the best. This one looks like a particularly nice example.

      • Nephilium

This one is a college town place (Kent State… you may have heard of it). But there’s no shortage of little breweries around me that have zero distribution footprint.

      • EvilSheldon

I mean, a small college-town brewpub is literally where I learned to drink beer (and play Euchre, but that’s another story…)

I have my biases, and I’m quite fond of most of them.

      • hayeksplosives

There was an interesting study (more of a survey really) that seemed to indicate that people with certain allergies were less vulnerable to COVID. People with hayfever, eczema, and asthma were all less likely to catch COVID or to suffer more than mild cases.

So those hyperactive immune responses were actually good for something. It’s another reminder of the hubris of the medical docs, who all automatically put asthmatic people in the “high risk” category for COVID based on no evidence.

    Depraved monsters

Democrats are up in arms this month over GOP charges that President Biden is to blame for the prolonged COVID-19 crisis.

They argue that Republicans, from former President Trump to his most vocal allies in Congress and in state capitals, bear plenty of responsibility for public resistance to masks and vaccines, noting the opposition to those leading mitigation efforts comes overwhelmingly from the right.

The criticism of masks and vaccines has sabotaged Biden’s efforts to get the nation past the pandemic, some argue.

“They’ve done everything possible to ensure that we can’t get past it,” Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas) said of the Republicans. “They’ve fought mask requirements, vaccine requirements. They’ve spread misinformation. They have amplified dangerous conspiracy theories.

“There is one group to blame in this country for the continued spread of COVID,” she added, “and that’s those actors who have done each and every one of those things.”

They refuse to clap, and now Tinkerbell is literally at Death’s door.

    • Ownbestenemy

Now it is just a wedge issue signaling it will never go away. Yay

  22. The Late P Brooks

GOP lawmakers, conservative news outlets and right-wing activists have led the charge against the push for universal vaccines and mask requirements — steps seen as vital, in the eyes of the country’s top public health experts, for containing the global pandemic.

Don’t you get it? When credentialed experts tell us what to do, we have to do it. Otherwise everybody will die.
