Did I give it away with the title? Last week we explored pre-workout supplements. This week we’ll explore post-workout drinks. I was surprised in the difference between the two. Apparently, there is some basis to think some pre-workout supplements are useful. For post-workout drinks, there isn’t any reason to use them unless you are doing multiple competitions in a day.
Three common myths are played up to sell post-workout drinks.
Myth 1: Large amounts of protein are necessary for recovery
No. Some protein is helpful for recovery, but it is unlikely that you need protein supplementation. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for protein is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. This increases to about 1.2–1.7 g/kg for athletes in a medium- to high-workload training plan (in terms of volume and/or intensity). But consuming more than 2.0 g/kg of protein doesn’t do you any more good in terms of recovery, muscle synthesis, immune function, or energy metabolism. Whether you are a carnivore, omnivore, vegetarian, or vegan, you should be able to consume 1.2–1.7 g/kg of protein daily through your normal meals and snacks.
Myth 2: The best time to consume protein is immediately after exercise
In terms of timing, you should be careful not to focus too many of your post-workout nutrition choices on protein. Immediately post-workout you want to focus on replenishing carbohydrates. Adding some protein to your food/drink choices may help accelerate the uptake of carbohydrates. I don’t understand the science but apparently that’s how our bodies work.
So, when should you consume the most protein? Actually, never. It’s better to spread your intake throughout the day. You need fuel for building and maintaining muscle tissue, your immune system, and all the other functions of protein throughout the day. You don’t store protein. You can only use protein from food when you consume it. In addition, protein is satiating and slows digestion, which helps keep energy levels from spiking and crashing and helps keep you from feeling so hungry.
The one minor modification to this thought is for people trying to gain muscle. In a previous GlibFit I discussed research showing eating 40 grams of protein in a single meal assists with growing muscle.
Myth 3: You need a recovery drink after every workout
Every manufacturer of post-workout recovery drinks wants you to believe this. It’s a crock.
Recovery drinks deliver carbohydrate, electrolytes, fluid, and protein and they are typically consumed immediately after exercise when your body is ready for rapid replenishment. This 60–90 minute post-exercise period is often referred to as the “glycogen window” because it is when your body is able to replenish glycogen stores most rapidly.
Replenishment of fluid, electrolytes, carbohydrate, and protein doesn’t cease after the glycogen window. It just gradually slows down. If you trained for 60–90 minutes, glycogen replenishment shouldn’t be a big challenge because you most likely didn’t empty the tank in the first place. And even if you did, your glycogen stores will be completely replenished in 24 hours from your normal food intake.
When should you use a recovery drink? If you are training or competing more than once in a single day. If you are riding back-to-back days of long miles (like during a bike tour, cycling camp, stage race, ultramarathon, etc. Hi Nephilium and Deadhead), then it’s a good idea as well. Otherwise, save your money or donate it to the Human Fund or Glibertarians Foundation. I’m not your boss.

Completely unrelated to working out, but speaking of low-carb, protein-rich beverages, I’ve become quite enamored of this particular flavor of Atkins shake. I keep a stash in my office at work, stick one in the break room freezer as soon as I arrive each morning, and just about the time I’m ready for “elevensies,” it has thickened up to a delightfully slushie consistency like unto a good milk shake. It’s a regimen I’m happy to stick to, and after all, if you can’t bring yourself to stick to a regimen, what the hell good is it? (And it satisfies me until I take my late lunch – an Atkins frozen meal, of which I’ve found several that are quite tasty. And the later I eat lunch, the less likely I am to succumb to the temptation of the unhealthy break room snacks.)

Well, the Piper has come calling for all of my Gib-Fit throughout the years. Specifically the torn meniscus that was “repaired”, taken out. Bone on bone for the last 23 years has apparently rubbed the bone away and exposed the nerves in my right knee, also arthritis. Very painful, can’t really walk normally, feels best to keep my right knee locked. The Dr. gave me a steroid shot, kept saying just relax, “I’m trying, ya have a damn needle in my knee!!!”, as he is also saying, “Boy, you have a lot built up scar tissue in here.” Supposedly will feel better in 5-7 days, I haven’t noticed much change yet on day 4. They also want to put some lubrication in my knee, if insurance will approve; if not I’m asking for the cash price and hopefully it is reasonable.
Knee replacement surgery is in order. Seemed like the Dr. thought in a few years. When I go back I am telling him to get the ball rolling and get this damn thing replaced ASAP!
I had both of mine replaced (sequentially) this summer. I should have done it years ago.

If your doc won’t give youa new knee, get a different doc. Seriously. My husband’s doc wouldn’t (too young, too fat) and I badgered him to find a different doc. He didn’t do it until he tripped and screwed up his knee beyond all saving and got a different doc. He got a new knee and loves it.
I have been very angry with him for not going to a different doc. Do it. Go shopping until you find someone who will give you a new knee.

Sinvisc worked great for me, I still had cartilage but the back of my kneecap looked like fish scales.
I’ve had it 3 times in one knee and once in the other. My last time was 7 years ago, not being on active duty seems to help also.
I run 4 times a week with no issues and before Sinvisc, I thought I was going to be medically retired from the Marines.

Synvisc worked for me for about 3 years, 6 months at a shot. Then I became allergic to part of the drug. That wasn’t pleasant.

My knee swelled up and hurt without putting weight on it. I could put it weight on it and so walking was extremely painful, I ended up going to the ER because I couldn’t contact the doctor (I could contact his office but not him). They ended giving me a prescription for pain pills that I allowed me to function. I only took the pills for a few days but it did help me a lot. I tried Synvisc again (I’m a sucker for punishment) the next week and it happened again, but not as painful. I took something similar after that.
Get ready for the 55-gallon drum of lube….

<cough>lower case d</cough>. FWIW, since April I’ve been doing most of my training in a fasted state, so my recovery intake is my breakfast and vice-versa. For that I eat oatmeal fortified with chia seeds, hemp seeds, Udo’s 3-6-9 and soy milk. I also drink homemade rice milk (basmati rice in water with a tiny bit of salt) and a green drink (spinach, cucumber, carrot and a sweetener (typically an apple) in water).
I seem to stay fairly healthy, although eight days ago I had twelve and a half beers and now appear to have a slight case of the vid.

Udo’s 3-6-9 is one of the many things I consume or do that I suspect helps me out, but I could be wrong about. Some things I change around to try to figure out if I’m getting a benefit, but I love the taste of the oatmeal I eat. It’s especially good when it’s been refrigerated overnight and I’ve just done my morning run. It’s like getting to eat cake for breakfast.
FWIW, I do think I could do better than Udo’s 3-6-9, but it would be more time consuming and time is money.

Doesn’t seem the zinc/D/C/Quercetin is working for me. Have had a cold since Mid-October, just now finally getting rid of it. Have been using the Zinc/C/D/Quercetin since first of Nov. Shrug. I did lose my smell the Saturday after thanksgiving, seems like it has returned starting Friday. My sister got the covid after thanksgiving. Seen a health freedom doctor who prescribed Ivermectin and some IV thingie and is feeling better now after 15 days. So maybe I did have the covid and my immune system plus the Zinc/D/C/Quercetin did work? Hell if I know.

If you have 2, 5 lbs weights, you can do free-style swim motions with your breath held. See if you can do 25. Then switch to backstroke with breath held for 25, continue until you can only do 10 while breath held. It’s a pretty fast workout that resets your pineal gland. It can help you sleep better.
My fitness is on hold at the moment, but before when I ran in the morning, my recovery drink was a Gatorade made with half the powder the label called for.

I started eating lo-carb on Nov 1. Lost a quick 13 pounds in the first two weeks and then stalled and stopped showing much in the way of ketones. .3 on the meter in AM around .5-.7 in the evening.
Took IRBEs advice and fasted for a few days, and took Mojeuxs advice and started drinking a lot more water to try and jumpstart weight loss and ketones again.
Lost three pounds during the fast but slowly put it back on within a few days and still was showing just trace amounts of ketones.
To make sure I wasnt somehow knocking myself out of ketosis with hidden carbs I went 4 days of eating eggs, chicken and steak only. No cheese no veggies, black coffee pretty much zero carbs. Still had just trace ketones. Started takings BHB capsules and MCT powder—still nothing.
From what IRBE had told me and from what Ive read its just my body using all of the ketones up and not wasting any. It just seems that for me, more ketones equals more weight loss, which is my goal, so Im a little frustrated. Physically and mentally I feel great, much more energy without carbs and its not even close, so it hasnt all been for nothing.
Question for anyone who would know—now that I know Im not going to show ketones no matter what, is there any reason to take things like the BHB exogenous ketones and the MCT oil? Am I getting anything out of them?

I have plateaued as well. From my reading/listening there is a chance our livers are just chocked full of glucose and they are dumping it and will work themselves out of it eventually. My plan to get over the hump is to up my exercise, especially sprints and HIIT sort of stuff. Stress the system.

I was peeing pink most mornings but now that I have the meter I am seeing .5. I am barely in. I am not cheating with eating but I tend to overindulge on the tequila some evenings. Those days I don’t even bother checking. Like today. Spineless I am. I plan on getting more routine with the monitoring. I have slacked off. It is cold now so I use that as an excuse. Weak!
IMO 3 lbs loss during fast is pretty good and standard. It is not unusual to pick the weight back up afterwards. Just knowing that you can fast and be more than OK is pretty psychologically liberating.
If you are utilizing ketones as fuel, taking exogenous ketones is providing you fuel..the question is do you need to take in those ketones if you can convert your fat to ketones…

Honestly , great doesn’t get much better than that. If you want to lose weight you can always fast and lose 3 lbs. If you want to lose more weight you can always do a dry fast (no water, no shower, ect).

Ignore the ketone meter. Chasing the numbers can make you insane. And besides, the more adapted you become, the less likely you are to show high ketone numbers.

I would like to lose about 15 pounds. Im in the gym every day, have a lot of muscle but am a little soft around the middle. Not actuallt writing down everything I eat but the last two weeks Ive been eating two meals a day and carb free protein powder in my first 2 cups of coffee a day.
I bought a glucose meter, the bllod meter for ketones, 50 buck worth of the test strips for the meter. Was all ready to track my glucose to ketone numbers to try and get to a sweet spot, and now its all useless. Whatever. I feel good and maybe Ill just do a bunch of fasting to get to my target.
It’s not useless, it’s just frustrating. I actually fin d glucose response much more interesting than ketones. I did some testing on various carbs and was shocked at which ones spiked m
15 pounds isn’t much, so you are really talking about body recomp.
Head over to ketogains.com and do their macro calculator. Then track religiously for a week or two. I like Cronometer. Prioritize protein and use fat to fill in gaps. If you are already in pretty good shape, you may just want to do some weekly tape measurements, rather than the scale.
You may actually need more calories, as bizarre as that sounds.

G-fit update: Sleep was good but last night not some much…went to bed late and slept in. Food was pretty good, little alcohol last night (see sleep). Hike mileage was 34 miles. Wim Hoff/meditative “ancient man” techniques; 1 time. I sauna, 1 cold swim. Went to gym 1 times. Weight stable at 178! Didn’t long fast.
I work out/hike fasted (well, coffee’d). When I get home, I eat protein, fruit and drink water with electrolytes. Seems to work.
Goals: Failed goal weight range (175-170)… Still not dead from Covid…MB;MC
To live better, fat adapt, skip a meal or three! Have a plan and some Narcan…

I’ve drastically increased my intake of vegetables (mostly broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and peas).
I’ve also reduced the amount of cured meats I consume. Hemorrhoidal flare ups seemed to have reduced significantly.
Not sure if that can be directly attributed to my diet but I’ll keep going with it until it fails.
I’m not sure either but if you got relief when you changed your diet then I would go with it.

I’ve been maintaining on the bike. At least 16 miles every morning before work and 23 miles today. Over 3k miles logged since starting earlier this year.
I’ve been stress eating way too much though, which has netted out weight loss from biking. Going into month 4 of acting as the GC on home renovations plus terminating a problem employee. At least both should be resolved this month and I will get back on track with my diet.

I would also encourage older dudes to adopt this strategy. We are losing muscle at a pretty good clip, so there is an argument that we need more protein than the young bastards.
A much better week this week. Walked every day, lifted MWF and nailed the diet (no booze!). My tracker informs me that over the past 7 days my average resting heart rate was 50, 30 miles logged, average 0f 14K steps and – most importantly – I averaged 7 hours, 45 minutes of sleep a night. Fuck yeah.
Yesterday’s hike was a nice loop in White Ranch Park 5.25 miles and 968 in elevation gain. It was a nice, fairly easy one, but we got to these beauties. Here’s another look at that rack!

It literally changed my life, I used to stay awake for at least 2 hours before I fell asleep and now I am out in less than a minute 95% of the time.

No booze. Yeah, I’ll be cutting even further back as I took a line officer position in the fire company again. Any drink means 12 hours until I can respond. On the plus side, once the first one is on board there’s no penalty for more. Assuming I don’t binge too badly – not likely, I should have the advantage GlibFit wise of severely reduced alcohol consumption.

They actually believe there was a conspiracy, run by trump, to have the Veep kidnapped and murdered along with Speaker Pelosi and to have Trump installed as permanent dictator forever. and the next person they frame for some crime is going to be the one who finally squeals and gives him up.

I got an app that tracks my running distance and pace. I’ve been getting a bit lazy with pace in recent years, so I figured I’d better hold myself accountable. My usual run is 5 miles, and my goal is to get every mile under 10 minutes (yea, not the fastest in the world, but I think I should get some credit for doing 5 miles nonstop at 240 pounds). I usually get the average pace under 10 minutes per mile, but there will usually be a mile or two that are over 10.
A few weeks ago, I was on the last two miles and really struggling. I doubted if I was going to finish without stopping. But from somewhere within, I got this burst of motivation and started moving faster – and nothing bad happened. That’s been my mantra ever since. Whenever I think I can’t push any harder, whenever I think I can’t make it, I just tell myself “nothing bad will happen.”
… Obviously, bad things can and do happen from pushing yourself TOO hard during exercise, but this wasn’t approaching that level of danger; it was just fatigue. I made it home and felt fine after having some coconut water and a giant bowl of domodah with brown rice.

Way too many carbs recently (“holiday” stuff) but 1+ hour/10k+ on the rowing machine today as I watched that totally bananas F1 finale.
Ozy put the “1 million meter club” in my head recently, so I’m psyching myself up for a million-meter 2022 – roughly 20 minutes a day, on average, at my usual pace.
Given my every-other-day goal (due to my somewhat wonky elbow), that’s 40 minutes per session, which isn’t too bad. Any vacations will put me in the hole, so I’ll need to step it up when I get back to it. I think I can do it.
