So my youngest asked me for a snack, and I found a box of raisins.  Because raisins suck, I told him the old joke.

”Raisins are nature’s candy.”

Correctly, he looked at me like I was a fucking idiot.

How about some links?

No shit? NPR finally noticed.  So now the college professors and know what you knew already.

Carlos Slim, the wealthiest person in Latin America, has been in the news a lot.  No, he didn’t kill anyone, but like every billionaire he’s politically connected.

I swear I keep seeing this Maduro’s Gold story at least once a year.

Well, that’s not very nice.

Its either that or let the Argentine government kidnap children of dissidents and let families loyal to the regime adopt them.  Yes, that actually happened.

LOL.

Here’s a tune. Have a great day!

“Because raisins suck, I told him the old joke.”

    I was expecting, “Que pasas?”

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Re-plumped with water (or even ETOH), they can be nice in some recipes.

      • Nephilium

They provide yeast nutrients when making quick and simple mead.

      • UnCivilServant

Why would you ruin the raisins like that?

      • rhywun

I was going to ask why ruin the mead.

      • Nephilium

It’s 3-5 raisins for a half gallon batch. The flavor doesn’t come through at all.

      • Nephilium

Because mead is good, and raisins are already ruined?

      • MikeS

        ^ correct answer ^

      • Pope Jimbo

3 square meads a day is what growing boys need

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        Paging kinnath?

      • kinnath

Using raisins for nutrients is old-school. Most mead makers today using commercial yeast nutrient. According to the “conventional wisdom” at one Facebook group that I hang out on, raisins provide little value in making mead.

      • pistoffnick

        “…raisins provide little value…”

        shortened it for you.

I have tried many weird foods (cows stomach, snails, frogs, squirrel, ostrich, etc.) I am an adventurous eater, but I don’t like raisins.

Why would you ruin a perfectly good grape?

    • Animal

A raisin’s best and most noble use is in oatmeal raisin cookies.

      This is known.

      • Count Potato

They are also good in non-cookie oatmeal.

      • UnCivilServant

        And non-oatmeal cookies.

      • Nephilium

        /sigh

The only purpose they serve in cookies is to trick children into eating them thinking they’re getting a chocolate chip.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        pfeh.

      • rhywun

        lol so true

      • UnCivilServant

What is wrong with you people?

Why would you let children near your cookies?

      • Nephilium

Because my sister spawned, and I believe my cooking and baking is good enough for them. I’m mildly proud that a recipe that I found is one my sister has fully embraced into the Christmas cookie rotation (steel cut oat chocolate cookies). There are no raisins in them as we are not cruel people

      • UnCivilServant

There is nothing cruel about raisins and other delicious dried fruits.

Nearly all of Cuba’s children aged 2 to 18 have now been vaccinated with home-grown vaccines.

Cuba has said its homegrown, protein-based Abdala, Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus shots give upwards of 90% protection against symptomatic Covid-19 when offered in three-dose schemes.

I’m waiting for the Soberana Plus Supreme shot myself.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

However, Cuba has not yet published results of its large-scale clinical trials in peer-reviewed journals, nor has it submitted the documents required by the World Health Organization for approval of its vaccines, according to the WHO’s online tally.

      The FDA nods and smiles.

    • Count Potato

“However, Cuba has not yet published results of its large-scale clinical trials in peer-reviewed journals, nor has it submitted the documents required by the World Health Organization for approval of its vaccines, according to the WHO’s online tally.”

So no one knows what it does.

      • Sean

        Berenson did not kill himself.

  6. prolefeed

My oldest kid, who is training to be a doctor, has the ‘vid. Can hardly move because everything hurts too much, and barely sleeping because of the coughing.

She was “vaccinated”, of course. All three of the kids have been putting on the full court press to get me jabbed, too, saying they wouldn’t let me visit in person until I did that.

The youngest hasn’t connected the dots – the goalposts have been moved from “the jab will vaccinate you and make you safe” to “my sister got sick because she didn’t get the booster shot.”

My middle kid is, I think, slowly getting it – we had a good video chat, where he accepted that the “vaccine” didn’t, you know, vaccinate you and keep you from getting sick, it acts like Theraflu. I didn’t broach the notion yet that maybe, just maybe, shunning me would keep him safe (because I was The Plague Carrier Who Hadn’t Joined The Ranks Of The Clean TM).

Objective reality is hard to grasp.

    • Count Potato

I hope your daughter is feeling better soon.

    • Tres Cool

My 1st couple days ‘vid + displayed my naivete. I thought “Cool…Im gonna kick back, eat chicken soup and drink beer. Ill chill till this flu-thing is over.”
      Wrong.
Days 3-5 I felt like Tyson used my torso for a heavy bag. My back, ribs, spine, hips….that pain was something else. And Ive had broken ribs. No comparison.
Day 6 or so, that subsided and the fever set in….a couple days on the couch with 103.5º or so fever. Tylenol would knock it down to the mid 100’s or 101 at best.
After a few days of that, the fever kinda went down and the coughing started. Pointless, non-effective, no mucous-phlegm coughing. Just non-stop dry hacking like Id inhaled a bag of flour. My body was trying to rid itself of something, but seemed like it didnt know what it was. Coughing to where Id passed-out. And with all that, crippling fatigue.

YMMV- Im just detailing what I dealt with.

      • Nephilium

Did you get the loss of sense of smell and taste? So far, among those I know who’ve had it, I’ve been the only one to get that symptom (although I tested negative on the rapid test, and the testing site never did the PCR test). Lager tasted like seltzer water, I couldn’t taste salt (which to my knowledge isn’t a scent based flavor), bourbon tasted like water, I could taste Altoids as a slight minty flavor, and dry hopped IPA’s had a slight bitter flavor.

      • rhywun

I have lost mine, but it doesn’t seem unusual to me, it seems like a typical head-cold symptom.

I don’t have chest or coughing issues thank god, knock on wood, etc.

      • Nephilium

I’ve had the general head-cold loss of scent and taste, this was much worse. Again, salt didn’t even have a taste, just a texture.

      • rhywun

Just checked… I can taste salt.

I made a small pizza last night – I could sort of taste some of it. But mostly I’m sticking with the blandest of foods so as not to waste flavor.

      • Raven Nation

I didn’t lose taste or smell.

      • The Hyperbole

I completely lost my sense of smell for about two weeks, it was very weird. My sense of taste was diminished (probably due to being linked to smell) but not gone.

      • The Other Kevin

I lost my sense of smell. It was strange and I felt panicky because what if it didn’t come back? But it did, within 2 weeks. My middle kid just recovered, she lost her sense of smell too.

The result of the game will be recorded as a 1-0 win for Switzerland by forfeit in accordance with the IIHF Rule Book.

Growing up we had only a handful of holiday traditions. For New Year’s Eve, we’d usually have a dill dip in a bowl made from a pumpernickel loaf into which we’d dip the bread cutouts and chips. This dip was made with thin-sliced dried beef (relatively cheap ingredient typically found alongside prepackaged lunch meats.) I wanted to indulge in nostalgia, but the store did not have that ingredient. I tried using pastrami, but it’s got too much fat to work. I hate hunting for an absent cheapass ingredient because the more expensive alternatives don’t trigger my ‘grew up poor’ flavor nostalgia.

They were also out of pumpernickel loaves, but rye should work.

How did the doctor get these specific 15 corpses? I mean the article says he wasn’t the coroner for where/when these people died. Every so often I just go an look at the expensive listings for the fun of it.

I know my budget isn’t at that end of the spectrum.

      • Gender Traitor

Has Common Core math really been around long enough for its first victims to have grown up and become realtors?

      • Drake

        And appraisers! Bastards.

      • rhywun

        WTF?

      • UnCivilServant

        I’m thinking data entry error.

      • Gender Traitor

Decimals are racist! Or patriarchy or something.

      • creech

Shit, you could buy three of them with one trillion dollar coin.

      • UnCivilServant

But then I’d have to so something about the stack of billion dollar bills I’d get as change.

      • violent_k

        Heat the house with them?

      • CPRM

Not even a theater or sex dungeon.

      • TARDis

Now that I have the money for a sex dungeon, I don’t want one.

Okay I want one, but it wouldn’t get put to use.

      • CPRM

Isn’t that what conspicuous consumption is all about?

      • TARDis

I suppose so. I guess I could get a pool table with some restraint devices.

“Hey Honey, want to play some pool?”
        “NO.”

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

Are sex dungeons really that conspicuous?

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      Ah, linked above

    • Q Continuum

Tiny, biased sample. Not that I’m arguing the shots are safe, just that “90% of the population is going to DIE!!!11!1!!eleven!!” is kinda the other side of the coin from “the magic vaccines will deliver me from evil!”

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I don’t disagree, the main point is that there appears to be low level damage that’s going undetected and unattributed.

Pushing this on hundreds of millions without long term safety data is just insane.

Not to mention, the regulatory bodies are doing everything they can to ignore the feedback data from the populace.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

I coined a personal term for the scientist and engineer types who would never deal with field data or personally perform failure analysis, lab jockeys.

Once the product was out of their design phase, they wanted nothing to do with it. But the field data is the most important data you can get as it describes how things work in the real world.

The VAERS data is an example. It’s an exceedingly important signal to the product performance of the vaccine along with many others, but the FDA et al are stonewalling or ignoring any data that didn’t come from a randomized control trial. Meanwhile the pharma companies know how to game the RCTs to get the results they want.

        It makes me nuts.

  18. Count Potato

    “Good morning Resisters!

I think Anderson Cooper is onto something with his idea to withhold SS from the unvaccinated.

Proving you’ve been vaccinated should also be a requirement to vote.

When anti-vaxxers freak out over not getting a SS check, remind them they hate socialism.”

    Not satire.

    • rhywun

Deprogramming the world from this shit is going to be a bitch.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Problem is these attitudes have always been there but Covid has supplied these types with an internal moral justification for their psychopathic meddling. There have always been authoritarian busybodies in the world and there always will be.

      • TARDis

True, but their psychosis level has been doped to the extreme. I fear the incinerators will not be able to keep up with the demand. The world is fixin’ to be rather stinky. They want violence and our bureaucracy is promoting it, along with the media and academia.

      • DEG

The Climate Change cult (or whatever it is calling itself now) has not gone away.

    • commodious spittoon

The replies are the best sort of kicked over hornets nest replies outside of primary Dem candidate fan brawls.

      • UnCivilServant

I don’t get how you can suffer that insanity, let alone extract enjoyment from it.

      • commodious spittoon

Inanity, really. Inanity is too much to hope for.

    • CPRM

I think everyone at work assumes I’m vaxxed. The company tried to bribe us with $500 to get vaxxed and it showed up on my paystub that I got it, even though I neither applied nor received the money. January will be interesting if SCOTUS doesn’t find it’s balls.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        woohoo!

? go on, take the money and run

(You’ll probably have to give it back at some point.)

      • CPRM

But I never actually got it, it just says I did on my pay stub.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        I wouldn’t say a word.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        Nor, sorry.

        V

      • Raven Nation

So, you just get to pay taxes on it?

      • Swiss Servator

        “nor received the money”

    • Drake

They’d have to put an infantry company at every voting station. My family has been here since Jamestown. If I don’t get to vote, nobody does.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Take it, and give me back my confiscations, minus inflation?

    • MikeS

So, let me see if I understand:

demanding proof of vax = prudent health measure
demanding proof of residence = racism

      • Gustave Lytton

The county vax clinic (slush fund to private contractor in association with the state and largest local hospital) proudly proclaims they don’t check immigration status or require proof of citizenship, but they require disclosure of race, ethnicity, and preferred language, along with usual vital statistics. And if you’re there for a booster, must present a valid CDC card (which will be checked against the state database) so that only qualified persons are getting a booster. The idea of just managing your own like every previous vaccination, series or boosters, is apparently plain crazy.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        Oh boy, what’s its address?

  19. CPRM

Can any of you programmer types tell me why so many websites think I’m accessing from ‘a new device’ so often when I’m not?

    • rhywun

Are you frequently tossing your cookies?

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        Kinky

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      What browser are you using?

      • CPRM

Brave, but it was happening when I was using Chrome as well.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

If you’ve got the broader set to clean everything when you exit, it will do that.

It if you’re running a separate program like CCleaner that nukes your history and cookies it will also do that.

You may be able to set some exclusions for particular websites.

      • R.J.

Brave does it even without emptying the cookies. It is annoying.

    • UnCivilServant

It’ll happen anytime your history gets cleared.

      • CPRM

But it doesn’t happen at the same time.

      • Raven Nation

Yeah, I’ve had the same thing this week. Different websites suddenly wanting to verify my ID as if I’ve never logged on from this machine. Wonder if it’s just a date thing.

      • UnCivilServant

Even if not cleared, the certification probably has an expiry date.

  20. Draw Me Like One of Your Tulpae, Jack

2.5 more hours in my long, lonely split shift. At least there was a press release tonight so I had something to do.

    • Swiss Servator

      “Release the hounds press!”

      • Draw Me Like One of Your Tulpae, Jack

Unfortunately a press release on a week when the press office is closed means there’s some disaster somewhere in the world. Philippines this time, poor bastards.

      • dbleagle

This would have never happened if man didn’t cause the Pacific Plate to move and subduct nearby, causing the subsequent volcanism which lead to the formation of the PI. Fuck you white males!

Did I get the press release correct?
