GlibFit 4.0 – The Iron

by | Feb 20, 2022 | GlibFit | 174 comments

Someone posted this last week. My Google Fu is terrible, so I don’t know who to credit. Sorry. A hat tip to whoever it was.

That article really hit a chord with me. Love or hate Henry Rollins, he says what is on his mind. For those of you not familiar with Mr. Rollins. Here he is in his prime.

This paragraph is where it grabbed me. “It took me years to fully appreciate the value of the lessons I have learned from the Iron. I used to think that it was my adversary, that I was trying to lift that which does not want to be lifted. I was wrong. When the Iron doesn’t want to come off the mat, it’s the kindest thing it can do for you. If it flew up and went through the ceiling, it wouldn’t teach you anything. That’s the way the Iron talks to you. It tells you that the material you work with is that which you will come to resemble.”

Preach it Henry. In a world of subjective craziness, it’s a delight to encounter an objective standard. I have done something, or I have not. I have achieved something, or I have not. I am making progress, or I am not. The Iron always tells you the truth. It is completely candid. Whether you are flattered or embarrassed, the Iron always tells you the truth.

“I learned that nothing good comes without work and a certain amount of pain. When I finish a set that leaves me shaking, I know more about myself. When something gets bad, I know it can’t be as bad as that workout.” This must be some sort of universal phenomenon. I have had days in court that were just ugly. The moment I walked away from counsel table I thought to myself, “it wasn’t as bad this morning’s workout.” The moment I was alone, I smiled to myself.

Rollins wrote long before Covid-19, “I prefer to work out alone. It enables me to concentrate on the lessons that the Iron has for me. Learning about what you’re made of is always time well spent, and I have found no better teacher. The Iron had taught me how to live. Life is capable of driving you out of your mind. The way it all comes down these days, it’s some kind of miracle if you’re not insane. People have become separated from their bodies. They are no longer whole.” After two years of insanity in California, this is so much the truth. Closing gyms for a time only made it worse. Being in the gym, feeling whatever it is I am feeling that day, grasping my connection to my physical being, provides a grounding unobtainable anywhere else.

This week’s music.

Just got back from dropping the bikes off at the shop. They’re still experiencing shortages for new bikes, except for a couple of the less popular styles (which happens to be what I’m in the market for in a couple of months). Weight is still trending down for the year, even after the weekend of the Superb Owl and drinking down in Columbus. Spin classes have dropped down to once or twice a week as my backlog of classes has been almost used up. I managed to get a new max power in the past couple of weeks (just under 1,200 watts), and average power has been climbing up as well.

Thursday I get to go to the first concert that should have a mosh pit in almost three years. I am very much looking forward to it (no mask requirement, no proof of vax, and no testing requirement for the venue).

Profound stuff. I already worked out today – mostly cardio. Now I’ll need to do some big lifts tomorrow.

    LPVA Convention results:

The Mises Caucus took the Treasurer position. Didn’t quite have the numbers on the others, but it was close.

More importantly, the MC took half of the delegates to Reno because they organized the voting amongst their members to maximize seats. It was clever and well done.

Also, the MC got the membership expulsion rules moved out of bylaws and into the constitution so the SCC can’t rewrite them at will and conduct a purge like we’ve seen in other states.

Caryn Ann Harlos was there and offered a lot of parliamentary assistance to the MC.

The LPVA was not prepared for the convention in general. It was pretty sad. The current chair and vice-chair didn’t even show up. And there were rumblings of “Republican infiltrators” in the crowd and from the current secretary.

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

Additionally, Spike Cohen was far more impressive on the videoconference than I’ve seen him before. He’s shaping up to be a much better candidate than I gave him credit for.

    • db

I haven’t really been paying attention to LP internal politics other than to know that there is some sort of struggle between factions–Mises Caucus, I guess, and SCC–what is that?

I’m presuming SCC, whatever it means, is a skinsuit operation?

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        State Central Committee

Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and all of the district reps.

We’d be happy to have a write-up on this.

      • Sensei

Tonio or Swiss, I’ve got an article that can go whenever you need it.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        Will do

    • creech

“The current chair and vice-chair didn’t even show up.”
This is why most people can’t take the LP seriously. How do non-committed folks end up elected as Chair and Vice Chair of a state party?
Delegates, don’t vote for anyone for higher office in the LP unless they’ve put in, say, four years climbing the ladder of the lesser positions.

    • Tundra

So, should I even bother with the LPCO?

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

Harlos will certainly be there since she lives in CO. I’ll find out what their prospects look like.

Just heard that the Mises Caucus swept the California convention. I think they may have a real chance of getting McCardle elected and running out the Sarwark buddies now.

  10. db

Way to miss the point entirely, WaPo.

But of course, why would we expect the Washington Post to see a threat in the water in which it swims?

Clearview has dismissed criticism of its data collection and surveillance work by saying it is built exclusively for law enforcement and the public good. In an online “principles” pledge, the company said that it works only with government agencies and that it limits its technology to “lawful investigative processes directed at criminal conduct, or at preventing specific, substantial, and imminent threats to people’s lives or physical safety.”

But the presentation shows the company has based its “product expansion plan” on boosting corporate sales, from financial services and the gig economy to commercial real estate. On a slide devoted to its “total addressable market,” government and defense contracts are shown as a small fraction of potential revenue, with other possible sources including in banking, retail and e-commerce.

Is there anything “they wouldn’t sell this mass surveillance for?” asked Jack Poulson, a former Google research scientist who now runs the research advocacy group Tech Inquiry. “If they’re selling it for just regular commercial uses, that’s just mass surveillance writ large. It’s not targeted toward the most extreme cases, as they’ve pledged in the past.”

They’re incapable of seeing evil in anything that government could do, and has demonstrated that it has done and will continue to do, but freak out at all the things they imagine that private enterprise might do with it. Certainly corporations could use and abuse this technology, but the potential damage by governmental abuses is of a higher order.

And I feel like the “we only breach your privacy at the lawful request of Law Enforcement” is one of the biggest dodges in history.

    • db

I f-ed up the blockquote. Paragraphs 2 – 4 are quotes from the article:

Last few weeks have been a wreck, fitness-wise, as I was traveling and eating in vacation mode.

There was a 10 day gap where I didn’t row at all (downside to rowing: it requires specialized equipment).

Gettting back on the horse this week.

    • Chafed

Welcome back to the fold slumbrew. I have an on topic question for you. I bought Jabra Elite Active 75t earbuds based on your praise of Jabra. They’re great but the pop out of my ears when I’m jumping. Any recommendations for replacement earbud tips that will keep them in place?

      • Drake

        Staples?

      • westernsloper

A buddy of mine got some of these. Loves them. I am going to give them a try I think.

      • Chafed

Thanks WS. If hadn’t already purchased the Jabra pair, I would consider that.

      • slumbrew

Glad you like them but I’m sorry to say I don’t have a fix for that – the rowing motion is smooth enough that I don’t have an issue with them popping out & that’s the most active thing I do with them. I will sometimes sort of “screw” them into my ears.

That’s about all they seem to suggest, other than slightly stretching out your ear first:

        https://www.jabra.com/blog/how-to-find-wireless-earbuds-that-dont-fall-out/

        Damn. Thanks.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        Yeah, stop jumping.

    • westernsloper

I can relate. My trip to TX really fucked me up. And I was faltering prior to the trip. If I don’t get my heart rate jacked at least once a day I lose gains rapidly. I made it about 20 mins up a slight grade on the bike this morning heart rate maxed and legs burning. It felt good but I felt pretty pathetic. I got big doses of Vit D the past two days which really helped my mood. That and tequila. I think the snow is going to hold off long enough tomorrow to get another bike ride in.

Slightly OT: I previously shared that I got a Covid Antibodies test from Labcorp. I had to pay a $6 fee (I think for a Labcorp doctor to authorize the test since I ordered it directly on their website), but recently confirmed that my Caresource health insurance (Obamacare) paid for the test itself.

    • Drake

I got that test from Quest after my wife had covid for 2 weeks. It came back negative – I never got any exposure to covid despite sleeping next to somebody with it.

I spent the next few weeks saying “I’m covid-proof, I can’t ever get it” – just to watch my wife knock on wood and freak out over me tempting fate.

      I really am covid-proof.

I’ve seen 4WD pickups get stuck out on the beach for all those in the reddit saying it’s a cure.

My wife got the Jetta stuck in a bit of loose sand when trying to turn around in a parking lot at the coast. Went off the pavement on what looked like packed dirt and… no forward movement. Thankfully some nice guy lent a hand to help push it free.

      • mikey

4wd lets you get stuck deeper and further from help than 2wd. Got stuck last week making a u turn on back county road – trying to avoid a drift. Guy came after half an hour and pulled me out with his winch. I was lucky coulda been a way longer wait.

  15. Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

I haven’t been specifically working out, but rather spending my energy doing a bathroom remodel. Almost done with that for the time being, as I am waiting for the new flooring to arrive, so next week will be a get back on the horse week.

Weight is down though, as I am adjusting to not having as physical a job as before. Which takes a bit of practice to not eat as many calories as you need to keep going, but once you get on the rhythm of it, it does feel better to not be stuffed.

When asked if there was still a present danger to the public, Sheppard said, “There are a lot of guns in our city, and there are a lot of responsible gun owners and there are also people who are not responsible. Can I definitively say there is no danger? No.”

Totally on message for gun violence gun violence gun violence message, while ignoring the problem is Portland has a criminal problem and a criminal behaviors problem that has been out in the open for 2+ years.

    • Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

If you drive east past the 205 towards Gresham you will see hundreds of cars being stripped for parts, broken down RV’s that look like they were meth factories, trash everywhere, etc. And that is probably the least “progressive” area of that city. I have been wondering when something like this was going to happen.

  17. Tundra

    Chafed!

It was me. That’s one of my favorite essays and I’m really glad you liked it. There is so much truth there it hurts.

Since I stopped going to the gym I have discovered the love of lifting alone. It’s just so nice to close the basement door, put on whatever I feel like listening to and get after it. It’s funny, too, that I feel worse about missing a rep in my own house than at the crowded gym!

I had a good Glibfit week. Everything kind of worked! Yesterday’s hike was a short but kind of brutal one. 3.2 mile loop at Mount Sanitas up in Boulder. The ascent was really steep – 1400 feet in about a mile, but the view was fucking amazing! Today was 62 and sunny, so I did my walk in shorts and a t shirt. Fucking love this weather.

Thanks so much for doing these. I really enjoy your topics and reading about what everyone is doing. We might be freaks, but we are freaks on a mission!

You can really tell how close you are to the epicenter of Progdom simply by how many masks you see. In my little town, it is dying out. Go to the college town 10 miles over and you still see double masking. My barber over there says that after the ordinance is over (3/28) he will still wear one, as that is how that town is.

I can’t tell if he wants to wear it, or just feels he needs to keep his business going.

maybe that’s what LJW can hope for: that Trudeau will lose his coalition

      • Don escaped Texas

here’s a primer on parliamentary government; so far as I know, Canada is typical: Officially, the prime minister is appointed by the Governor General of Canada, but by constitutional convention, the prime minister must have the confidence of the elected House of Commons. Normally, this is the leader of the party caucus with the greatest number of seats in the house. But if that leader lacks the support of the majority, the governor general can appoint another leader who has that support or may dissolve parliament and call a new election. By constitutional convention, a prime minister holds a seat in parliament and, since the early 20th century, this has more specifically meant the House of Commons.

Mornin’! Why am I awake at this hour on my day off?

    • robodruid

      Good Morning.
Last good day before weather turns cruddy again.

    • Festus

      Ottawa or Washington, DC?

    • Festus

I don’t go to the local rallies because I’m afraid that I might get a little “het up” by the counter protests. Plus, people.

    suh’ fam
    whats goody

    • Ghostpatzer

      Yo.

    • Festus

I only had just the one accident today, thus far. That’s sorta goody!

      • Ghostpatzer

Just read about your “accident” upthread. Hope the rest of your day is less shitty.

      • Sean

        Yeah, that’s unfortunate.

Anyone here know if Voltaren actually does anything? To me it seems like rubbing vapo-rub. Diclofenenic diethylamine gel 1.9% The act of massaging it in probably helps more.

For acute injury, Im a fan of DMSO (dimenthyl sulfoxide) generally found in horse liniments. However, since it tends to load down the liver, and I enjoy a beer or 12, I havent used it in years.
For my arthritic shoulders I slap on lidocaine patches when Im home. Before work I slather aspercreme with lidocaine all over them. Bayer “back & body” seems to beneficial too.

Thanks, Tres. Judi is a horse girl. She’ll know about that stuff.

Nothing much just – Spinning Laser Blade, Lion Head Attack, Lion Torches, Sting Ray Missiles, Ion Darts, Eye Beams, Electro-Force Cross, Lion Lariat, Electro-Saber, Argon Force Field, and the Blazing Sword, his ultimate weapon.

      • Festus

Hype, you’re just a cunte, but I love you anyways.

Thank God the government is developing solutions to the tragic opioid epidemic.

    https://www.upi.com/Health_News/2022/02/21/fentanyl-test-strips/4281645214200/

“Developed and sold by the Canadian biotech company BTNX, the single-test strips were the subject of a study led by Brown University and published in the November 2018 issue of the International Journal of Drug Policy.”

Oh, wait – this was developed by an evil corporation?

I like to think that legalizing drugs (all of them) would correct the problem of adulterants in a small amount of time. Dealers wouldnt have to hop-up their low-grade, shitty, smack, if the good stuff were available.

      • Ghostpatzer

^^^This. My 23 year old son told me pretty much the same thing the other night during a family discussion. I love that boy.

      • Tres Cool

Well, it could be a class thing, where beer-snob like people (lookin @ you Neph) will only ever use the free-range, non-GMO, humanely-slaughted, craft heroin.
And people like me (Milwaukee’s Best Light) will likely pay for whatever is cheapest.

Our (medium-sized) town has them on a few of the main drags. Not really known by the general populace. I have a family member who’s done some “internship” type stuff with the local PD a few years ago. From those anecdotes, the “ordinary” use of them is for BOLOs or just to ping if a vehicle that’s reported as stolen or involved in a crime goes by. I’d bet, based on what I’ve heard, that they’re actually very common, just on the down-low.
