GlibFit 4.0 – Anti-Inflammatories

by | Mar 13, 2022 | GlibFit | 294 comments

Sometimes you overdo it. You lifted too much, ran too far, chafed (drink!) your legs riding your bike, or rowed for an entire F1 race. You need some relief. That relief nearly always comes from some type of painkiller. I suppose you could drink until you don’t feel anything, but I can’t recommend that in GlibFit.

There are two main classes of over-the-counter pain medicines: acetaminophen (Tylenol) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Acetaminophen works by dulling pain receptors in the brain. NSAIDs lower the production of prostaglandins. These hormone-like chemicals irritate nerve endings, causing inflammation and pain. Common NSAIDs include aspirin, Advil, Motrin, and Aleve. NSAIDs are also available as creams, think Ben-Gay or Aspercreme.

Aspirin starts to work in about 15 minutes and brings meaningful relief in about 45 minutes. NSAIDs have a broader range of times before they take effect. Ibuprofen, for example will likely bring some relief in 15- 30 minutes (this does vary from person to person) but takes one to two hours to reach full effect.

Moving beyond sore muscles, you may want to pay attention to chronic inflammation. Many major diseases that plague us—including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and Alzheimer’s—have been linked to chronic inflammation. Needless to say, adhering to a diet that avoids inflammation has significant health benefits.

Foods that cause inflammation:

  • refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and pastries (Mmm doughnuts)
  • French fries and other fried foods
  • soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages
  • red meat (burgers, steaks) and processed meat (hot dogs, sausage)
  • margarine, shortening, and lard

Anti-inflammatory foods include:

  • tomatoes
  • olive oil
  • green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and collards
  • nuts like almonds and walnuts
  • fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna, and sardines
  • fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and oranges

This week’s music.

A First a day keeps the doctor away. Nothing else is needed. You all need to First more and watch your gains.

  2. Gustave Lytton

I’ve got a loaf of bread just about to go in the oven. I should have tuna sandwiches this week to counteract it then.

French fries and other fried foods

    Shit

red meat (burgers, steaks) and processed meat (hot dogs, sausage)

    More shit.

I’ve been a bit inconsistent with the gym last week. The cold is gone. This week will be a bit rough for getting into the gym on a regular schedule.

    • Fatty Bolger

For what it’s worth, my wife’s grandfather ate nothing but red meat his entire life, mostly hamburgers, and lived to 99 (almost made 100) without dementia, diabetes, stroke, or heart attacks, and in excellent shape for his age. He liked bread, and especially loved those greasy rolls they have at buffet style restaurants. Anecdotal, sure. But most of the people I know who lived long healthy lives didn’t do anything out of the ordinary.

      • DrOtto

Also, he clearly didn’t have dirt on the Clintons.

Am I the only person that thinks inflammation is being over-hyped in the past few years? Seems to me that effect is being confused with cause.

    • Mustang

Not sure if I’d say it’s over-hyped but given the huge number of overweight Americans walking around and the unwillingness of anyone to tell them to get healthy, I’d say it’s probably an issue with a pretty simple solution.

      • Chafed

        So much this.

    • Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

So, you think we are in an Inflammationary Cycle?

      • anti pro state

Hate to deflate you, but you’re theory is all hot air.

      • rhywun

        Putin’s inflammation hikes!

      • Aloysious

“So, you think we are in an Inflammationary Cycle?”

Depends. Has Q posted any links yet?

Well, I probably did exactly the right amount of deadlifting this morning. Going from how I feel now, one more would have been too many. Topped out at 5 x 195. My form was breaking down, so I didn’t goo for the 2-handle. Maybe next week.

I am sore, and will be sore, but I don’t take painkillers. I’ll live.

  6. The Late P Brooks

I start my day with cookies and coffee. Is that wrong?

    • TARDis

      (Dark) Chocolate>Cookies>Pie>Doughnuts>Candy>Cake.

Fight me. Or slap me around a little, if you are binary-female.

    • TARDis

      So, I meant you’re good.

  7. DrOtto

Gave up fried foods for lent. I rarely drink sugary beverages anymore. You can have my red/processed meats when you pry it from my cold, dead hand.

  8. The Late P Brooks

Phoenix used to be such a great track, and napcar just completely ruined it.

  9. Mustang

Green tea and turmeric are also anti-inflammatory. I like to do little experiments with supplements where I will take a particular one religiously for 30 days and note any effects and avoid any other dietary changes. For 30 days I drank only green tea instead of coffee every morning and one cup of turmeric tea every evening. Noticeable improvement in general aches and pains. I now incorporate both more regularly (though I have always consumed a lot of green tea).

I think Warty said it best: don’t eat fat fuck foods. I suspect most American health problems come from eating a bunch of shitty processed food.

Now excuse me while I finish my Five Guys burger.

    • one true athena

so that’s why turmeric is suddenly everywhere. I had no idea what it was supposed to be doing for people, I just saw the supplement section awash in the stuff.

  10. slumbrew

rowed for an entire F1 race.

Heh, _literally_ just finished rowing for an hour while watching Drive To Survive (~10k meters, ~ 750 kcals); gotta get back in form for the upcoming season.

I tend to avoid pain-killers unless I really need something and then it’s usually just aspirin. I haven’t taken acetaminophen in years – I, uh, like a drink and acetaminophen and alcohol do _not_ go together (unless you want a new liver).

My diet falls into “pretty good, could be better territory”; I mostly don’t eat the things on your first list, and mostly do eat the things on the second list. I want animal protein on my salad (the kale caesar with steak I get at the local places is just so, so good) and not a big fan of fruit.

I confess I also ate the fries that came with my steak the other night.

    • Chafed

750 kcals!?! Congratulations on losing 20 pounds in one session.

  11. Mojeaux

After adventures in ulcers, I won’t touch NSAIDs. Judicious use of Tylenol only, thanks. I apparently have a fairly high tolerance for pain (except that damned blood pressure cuff), so…

In the hospital when I was almost fully out of it, one thing I do remember was being given a pain pump so I could press the button and get some painkillers. I was told I could press it every 10 minutes. I remember pressing it about 3 times and then later someone said, “Well, you’re not using it, so I guess we’ll just take it away.”

    • hayeksplosives

I agree on avoiding NSAIDs in order to protect my stomach from gastritis.

My go-to used to be Tylenol but that is contraindicated for liver health.

CBD oil is amazing, but not allowed for federal contractors even though it doesn’t have THC.

So I just grin and bear it. Builds character I guess.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

You should try targeted CBD gummies.

It ONLY CBD, and doesn’t contain any THC or other cannabis terpenes to trip a drug test.

They originally made it for parents who wanted a 0% TCH alternative to give to their children.

      • hayeksplosives

Sadly, it’s not just about passing the test. The way the regulations are written, we aren’t allowed to ingest/inhale ANYTHING derived from cannibis. Really silly rule.

      • Not Adahn

        Suppositories are ok then?

      • hayeksplosives

Lol. Not going to find out.

I did use a rub-in CBD cream on my back when I broke it in 2019. I don’t know if it absorbed enough to be detectable and I don’t plan to find out if it would meet the regulations.

      • Ted S.

        As are injections, apparently.

        Or transdermal patches.

    • pistoffnick the refusnik

You are a red head, right? I read somewhere that most red heads have higher pain tolerance.

I do not. I take a generic Aleve every morning to help with the arthritis. Just before I had my knees replaced, they made me stop that. It was a very painful 7 days.

    • Tres Cool

Thanks to having some fucked-up shoulders and other assorted age-induced aches/pains. I take a full 1g of aspirin each night before I go to work (Bayer Back & Body).
Luckily, I’ve never had stomach issues. The downside is that if I so much as nick myself at work, let alone a decent laceration, it bleeds and bleeds and bleeds….

      • Fourscore

I know that routine, even if my aspirin is a 81mg. The slightest bump on the backs of my hands caused black skin for weeks. The heart seems to work OK, slow and steady.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

Now try being on real blood thinners.

It was truly terrible. Someone could flick me, and I’d develop a bruise the size of a softball that lasted a month or more. They never hurt, but holy shit were they ugly.

The first time I shot a rifle on blood thinners, I had a massive bruise about the size of a volleyball on my arm, back. Turned everything color of the rainbow, and lasted nearly 6 weeks.

        Man, fuck that stuff.

      • pistoffnick the refusnik

Yep. I’m on the rat poison for the rest of my life. Feckin’ Dutch ancestors.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

I don’t know who to blame. No one in my family line had premature heart attacks, yet here I am, having had 2 heart attacks by the time I was 40.

Fortunately I’m only on baby aspirin, but I was on blood thinners for 18 months after each heart attack to allow time for stents to settle in.

    • rhywun

I was advised by several different hospital-folk that ibuprofen helped wreck my colon so I’m on the acetaminophen train now too.

    • Gender Traitor

I’ll only take acetaminophen for a fever, since otherwise it makes me feel clammy, as if it’s lowering my body temp whether I need it to or not. No known stomach issues (::knocks wood::) so I take two ibuprofen right before bed to try to prevent my wonky right shoulder (my “old mime injury”) from pinching a nerve and sending sharp pain down my arm when I sleep on my side.

      • Tres Cool

A mime in a terrible thing to waste.

Due to a neck injury, either hand will routinely go numb and/or get painful when I sleep. Ive learned that a slight neck position adjustment either way makes it go away almost immediately. Also explains why my sleep is rough at best.

Speaking of- I work tonight. Im going to bed.

    • C. Anacreon

I ended up with a small bowel obstruction, which, according to the gastroenterologist, was due to daily motrin and aspirin I was taking for the pain from my crushed spine from bone marrow cancer. Two abdominal surgeries later, it still flares up on occasion. So much for being good and trying to avoid addictive meds.

    • Brochettaward

I mean, you can look at anyone on that list and say the same. What the fuck makes Chelsea Clinton qualified to talk as an expert on anything, though?

      • Tres Cool

I imagine that she’s been instructed on how to thoroughly wipe things (like with a cloth), shred documents, and induce suicides by rounds to the back of the head.
Network security likely isnt in her wheelhouse.

      • hayeksplosives

She’s the child of not one but two mafia bosses.

not gunning for anyone, but this is one of those heads I win tails you lose deals that isn’t rare at glibs dot com

regular person with the nation’s ear: what qualifies them to lecture me!?

the only way to weigh anyone’s contribution is to weigh their contribution

      • Fatty Bolger

I’d be happy to listen to the PhD.

I don’t feel obligated to take everything he says as the gospel truth.

      • Don escaped Texas

        good

it’s not like there’s a monolithic commitment to both responses; it’s more that there’s a lot of patience for both responses when they come up

I’m certainly not defending the Clintons; other than Lachowsky, I’ve probably known more about them longer than almost everyone here (can see Arkansas from porch)

      • Tres Cool

Can you see Russia from your porch, too ?

      • Fatty Bolger

What I find far more frustrating is that I can listen to the experts, look at their actual scientific findings, see that the actual studies and findings do not agree with the “consensus” or “conventional wisdom” or “what rational people believe” or whatever you want to call it, sometimes dramatically; and yet I can’t bring that up in polite conversation without being branded a conspiracy theorist or worse.

It’s like the mask thing, I’ve actually read the studies, with a focus on RCT’s which are the gold standard of scientific research, and they all conclude that masks don’t work for viruses, including COVID. But try to tell that to people that who aren’t anti-mask already, and you get noses in the air, and “I think I’ll trust what the experts say, thank you.”

      • Fourscore

Even those well educated people to include some in the medical fields.

      • juris imprudent

I think you missed the bigger picture – who gives a fuck about whom the Vatican invites to talk? Personally, I think a Clinton is right up their alley.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

What’s the common denominator? An elitist establishment with a coordinated agenda and an army of lackeys looking for the most effective person to put in front of the microphone to push the agenda. The act of appearing at the Vatican or on CNN or wherever is, in and of itself, discrediting. At the least, they’re unwitting, naive participants in the scam. All too often, they’re in on the whole thing.

      • Not an Economist

Well, she was born to the people with the right beliefs, went to the right schools, so that makes her an expert on just about everything. And she is better than you by default.

      • Ted S.

  12. The Late P Brooks

    Stand up for your rights

As many people return to more pre-pandemic behaviors, this can feel like an especially perilous moment for older people, those with weak immune systems and other health problems that make the virus especially dangerous. Parents of kids too young to get vaccinated are worried too. Many feel left behind and angry.

Golden is one of the many healthy people who aren’t necessarily at high risk but who nonetheless are also feeling out of sync with the world around them.

It can be tricky to adjust, experts agree, and hard to deal with the social pressure to shrug off COVID worries. Their advice is that it’s OK to hold on to your own sense of what’s safe and take your time coming out of the bunker.

Embrace your government-issue manufactured hypochondria and germophobia. Don’t let those terrorists buffalo you.

    • rhywun

      NPR knows its customer.

    • Muzzled Woodchipper

In my observation, old people were the FIRST to say “Fuck these masks.”

It’s the young, those under 25 or 30, who are still screaming “DANGER!”

It’s people who chose to swallow the government line, not people who are genuinely scared to unmask because Health.

      • Tres Cool

I think I’ve mentioned my barber before, “Fritz”. He’s been cutting my hair since I was 5 or 6.
He’s 74 now, and when we had a “lockdown” he still ran his clandestine hair-cutting business when everyone else was closed.
His take is “Look, I took 1 shot so I could play on my golf league. But fuck hiding inside the house. There’s still too much out there to do.”

      • trshmnstr the terrible

I heard my first mask shaming today. We were playing tennis and my daughter’s coach was on the next court with a couple of masked up girls (9 or so years old). After a few minutes, it was clear that the masks were an impediment to breathing, and she laid into the parents for forcing the kids to wear them outside on a windy day while physically exerting themselves. “It’s nice to see your beautiful faces now!” was her response when they took them off.

I signed daughter up for an additional month of lessons after that. Sane people get my business.

      • rhywun

Masked up outside never make any fucking sense and anyone enforcing that now SHOULD be shamed.

  13. The Late P Brooks

That’s how Michelle Forman, 42, feels. “It does feel like a sort of like a weird in-between time,” she says. “It does feel strange. It feels uncomfortable, you know, being in a store and seeing people without masks.”

Forman, who lives in Kensington, Md., with her husband and two kids, says masks feel “a little bit like a like a security blanket.” Wearing them, “feels normal, and it feels reassuring,” she says.

So even though they’re all fully vaccinated and healthy too, they’ll keep masking around other people, to protect themselves, and others from COVID-19 and long COVID. And they still aren’t eating inside restaurants or going to the gym or movies.

And it’s high fives all around for the public health experts fart-sniffers.

    • rhywun

they’ll keep masking around other people, to protect themselves, and others from COVID-19 and long COVID

Who’s going to tell them that none of that works and “long covid” isn’t even a thing?

      The poor kids.

      • Fourscore

It must be a helluva let down after 2 years of “playing by the rules” to find out it was for naught. Many, however, will never give up not believing it saved their life.

I can’t remind my friends though, I have so few left that I still take what I can get.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

Many, however, will never give up not believing it saved their life.

        This.

Despite Omicron blowing shit mask theory out of the water, and shit vaccine theory to a lesser extent, they still hang on because they simply won’t believe that the last 2 years were complete bullshit.

An 81 mg aspirin daily for the last 35 years, seems to work for me. Since Mrs F grew up where pork and chicken were the dominant farm animals we eat a lot of that. I have to eat one deer a year by myself.

I need to go fishing this summer, I like both catching and eating. Need some help with the boat so if anyone wants a vacation in lake country I’ve got a place for you to stay and I’ll act as the fishing guide.

The instructor at the NRA RSO class brought his Moisin-Nagant to teach us how to clear it. He was insistent that it wasn’t loaded from the top — you were supposed to open the magazine floor plate and load it from underneats.

I am so unimpressed with that class.

    Chafed!

I won’t take any anti-inflammatories any more. I do enough liver abuse as it is!

Great topic. Reducing inflammation should be the number one GlibFit goal. It truly is the root of all ill-health.

Red meat is not inflammatory, though. That’s propaganda.

As usual, the answer is food, movement and sleep.

I had another mediocre week this week. Not sure wtf is going on, but I’ve had no appetite, my workouts have been shit and my sleep garbage. However, I just got back from a nice 6 mile hike so I’ve decided that this bullshit ends today.

    • KSuellington

I’ve never had any real trouble falling asleep and staying asleep until the Vid Panic. I’ve experimented around a bit and found that while 3-5 mg of melatonin does a good job of putting me out, I noticed being a bit groggier in the morning and needed more caffeine to get going. Lately I have been taking magnesium and ashwagandha an hour before bed and it seems to be helping me to get back to sleep easier when I wake up in the middle of the night. I’m going to keep going with it as both of those have other beneficial effects and they are pretty cheap supplements. It may work for you.

      • rhywun

I don’t often have much trouble sleeping, and I do a ton of bad stuff in the hours before bed. Sometimes I wonder how much better it could be if I cut that shit out.

      • KSuellington

If you’re falling asleep easily and staying asleep I’d say you probably don’t even need to mess with it too much.

Those of you who choose to take acetaminophen (Tylenol), might want to consider supplementing with NAC (N-Acetylcysteine).

    • Tundra

Even those who don’t should take it.

      • Annoyed Nomad

Tundra! I think you were the one last week who recommended the mouth-taping technique to prevent snoring. My wife thanks you.

      • Tundra

        Awesome!

It really is magic. I’m glad momma won’t murder you.

        For snoring, anyway!

      • Ted S.

Now she wishes she could tape your mouth shut the rest of the day, amirite? :-p

      • blackjack

Mouth taping? Sounds a lot cheaper than roofies!

    • Annoyed Nomad

Because NAC can also help with viral illnesses, some people were recommending it as a way to reduce Covid symptoms/severity. So, of course it was treated like Ivermectin, with Amazon and others removing it from being purchased. I got mine at Swanson, who continues to offer it.

      • Tundra

        Sprouts has it, too.

  24. Tundra

rhywun, Wild/Rangers again tonight. Crazy fun start.

    • rhywun

      wut

      Unless you’re watching a repeat.

      • Tundra

        Lol.

        Fucking ESPN+. You are right!

      • rhywun

I was gonna say. We just crushed Dallas last night. It must have been nuts with the final score but sadly I missed all of it due to prior commitments.

      • Tundra

        Yep.

Preds tonight. Heavy start – they may need to replace the boards.

    • hayeksplosives

      Hopefully this is true.

      • Tundra

I think it is. I’ve seen a bunch of variations of this across a bunch of platforms.

Time to end this. What boggles the mind is that the truce will most likely be exactly what Putin wanted many years ago.

      • hayeksplosives

I give up. I have typed a multiple sentence reply here twice just to have them disappear.

        Grrr.

      • Chafed

That, unfortunately, is a distinct possibility.

      • Chafed

As I understand it, that demographic decline is likely to prevent China from, on average, becoming a rich country.

    • LCDR_Fish

Really interesting to hear the ADVChina guys talk about it. The gov’t is up to encouraging 4 or more kids…and potentially mandating pregnancy in some cases….just nuts trying to control people.

      • Don escaped Texas

terrifying: the thing must be fixed, but as much of the original materials and methods as possible should go unchanged

  28. LCDR_Fish

Another info thread – not much different than the one from this morning.

    https://twitter.com/WarintheFuture/status/1503138054373994496

In this context…I think some observations on Russia can be used for China (ie. low level of NCO involvement, lack of practical exp, not sure about skill at firefighting/damage control on ships, ability to improvise/flex) – but in a Air/Naval conflict the numbers there are still a major issue given the geography and they have a LOT of very good anti-ship missiles.

  29. The Hyperbole

You people are rubbing off on me, I just noticed a wokeisming in a TV show.

    • Brochettaward

You’d have to be one super oblivious cunt not to notice the woke just watching two minutes of commercials.

      • The Hyperbole

Why are you watching commercials? “Firsters” must not be very smart.

      • Brochettaward

Whatever I am, I’m not an oblivious super cunt.

    • JaimeRoberto (shama/lama/ding dong)

Are you sure it wasn’t Steve Smith rubbing off on you?

      • The Hyperbole

That pitch was hanging there a lot longer than I thought it would.

  30. Brochettaward

Tom Brady unretired. He could only put up with one month of family time.

    • Hyperion

But Broketard didn’t retire from being a super fag penis hound.

      • Brochettaward

I think, however, that this is a Michael Jordan mistake.

      • Tundra

        Yes.

One good year and it’s over.

      • Chafed

        It’s pronounced Fahv-ra.

      • rhywun

I don’t follow that game but if it means “shoulda stayed retired” I wholeheartedly agree.

I’m not a superfan of football and I’m already sick of that mug.

      • hayeksplosives

Brady’s life has been defined by his career do so long, I imagine that realizing it was over was something like post-partum depression or grieving the loss of a dear friend. He’s in the denial phase now, trying to “undo” the sense of loss.

Probably should have quit after his latest Super Bowl win, gone out on top.

      • LCDR_Fish

That was his first season with a new team though right? Probably needed more on the contract.

      • C. Anacreon

He had a great year this past season and came in second for league MVP. He came up short of the Super Bowl because of his team’s defense, not because of his play. It’s not like he stayed a year too long, yet anyway.

    • The Hyperbole

You misspelled vandalism. Amusing vandalism, but vandalism none the less.

        Of course.

    • rhywun

Gas station managers are not fans of the stickers.

A wag more enterprising than I could counter this beef by releasing a package of refrigerator magnets instead, for the conscientious objector.

      • LCDR_Fish

Would that mess up the computer and dick up the charge?

      • hayeksplosives

A thin fridge magnet wouldn’t be enough to affect the computer or the card reader.

      • The Hyperbole

The ease of removal doesn’t change the fact that someone will have to expend some amount of time and energy to do so. (assuming the owner wants doesn’t want them on his pump)

      • rhywun

Maybe the owner could take his or her complaints up to the supplier. And the supplier up to the gas company. And the gas company up to the Big Guy.

    • Gustave Lytton

I’ve seen them on cardlock pumps too.

  31. KSuellington

Speaking of Glibfit, I submitted my permit application to climb Mount Whitney this summer. It is the tallest peak in the lower 48. It’s a non technical climb in the summer, about 22 miles to summit and back. It can be done in about 14 hours. It’s 14,505 feet tall and the elevation gain is 6200 from the trailhead. We are hoping to get an overnight permit and camp out one night at 11k feet at Consultation Lake. For any Glib that might want to do it get on it today or tomorrow as the permit lottery ends tomorrow. It’s 6 bucks to apply for a permit. Hoping we get it this year as last year I didn’t win one.

    https://www.recreation.gov/permits/233260

    • Tundra

      Sweet!

I’m gonna do a couple 14ers this summer, too. Is Whitney very technical, or just brutal?

      • KSuellington

I’ve never done it before and am stoked to get a chance to try. It’s a non technical climb once the snow melts if you take the Mt Whitney trail. There are technical climbing routes, but the trail is just arduous I have been told. I absolutely love that part of the Sierras, very stark beauty. Close by are some of the oldest (if not oldest) trees in the world.

I tried many years ago to climb Mount Shasta which is just a bit lower. That you need cramp-ons and ice axe to do, even in the summer. We failed due to some bad planning but got pretty high up. If we win the permit I’m going to get to the top. Happy hiking Tundra!

      • Tundra

        You too, brother!

        Sounds amazing.

      • Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

Neither. It is actually a cakewalk, and there is a back door to it from the east side (Whitney Portal). I did it as a boy scout 35-40 years ago when there was no permitting. Things have changed since then. I friend of mine did it a couple years ago, and said the worst thing was piles of shit. Literally.

      • Tundra

What the fuck? Do people not understand burying shit?

      • Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

Well, some people can give a shit, but not take it.

      • Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

I do know that in the ultralight backpacking scene, toilet paper is frowned upon, so they use smooth rocks.

      • rhywun

        I can’t even.

      • Chafed

        Hard pass.

      • Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

      • EvilSheldon

This is just one of the many ways that hyperlighters are weird.

      • KSuellington

I know on Shasta they gave you a gallon ziploc with a shit target to pack out your waste. Of course people have to fuck it up.

      • dbleagle

The trail up Whitney can be brutal coming down. You are tired and have to do thousands of vertical feet and the fronts of your thighs will know it. The nice thing is you pass close to Mt Muir and can take a quick detour and bag a second 14er.

There is a non-technical route up the East Face called the “Mountaineers Route” which John Muir did the first ascent. Until late in the summer an ice ax and maybe at least instep crampons are a good idea. I got my high school aged kids up and back in a day. The day included headlamps at both ends but it was a day. Much more scenic and less people, and shit. In the 1990s you didn’t need to get a permit for that way as long as you weren’t going to establish a camp.

    • EvilSheldon

      Sounds like a great time!

  32. hayeksplosives

    Ugh.

Dems are pushing for Nevada to become “first in the nation” by scheduling it’s presidential primary before Iowa’s caucus.

I do not look forward to the boost in political activity here.

    • rhywun

I hate that whole system. There’s something wrong about it that I can’t quite put my finger on, but it seems like there has to be a better way. Maybe one primary day nationwide? I dunno.

I suspect this is something the forefathers didn’t anticipate, so therefore it became a shit-show.

      • Trigger Hippie

‘I hate that whole system. There’s something wrong about it that I can’t quite put my finger on’

For one: Staggered primary/caucus results influence the more herd minded portions of our voting citizens to bandwagon/follow the perceived political winds. Let them all happen at once. Don’t allow the wealthy and politically connected the flexibility to manipulate further election results. Force them into a out all their eggs into one narrative and let’s see what happens.

Just my two pennies for the ferryman.

      • The Hyperbole

No state involvement in primaries what-so-ever. Let the parties choses their candidates in what ever manner they see fit (and fund it themselves), the state should only be involved in general elections.

      • rhywun

        Works for me.

      • The Hyperbole

Oh, and the rules for getting on that general election ballot need to be identical for everyone, none of this automatically putting on the R’s and D’s or what ever party might have met some past criteria. Every election you all start from zero, If first timer and unaffiliated Joe Blow has to get X number of signatures in X percentage of the precincts then so does your Trump’s Clinton’s Biden’s Bush’s etc…

    • Trigger Hippie

It’s a cynical cash grab via political donations. First in line for the slush fund.

      • rhywun

Nice. I like the display – took me a while to find those big blue digits myself. I had to set the time manually, though.

      • Gender Traitor

I love the display, too. but the design is a bit too sleek and high-tech. The various buttons on tip are lined up flush with each other, so I had to stick a piece of Velcro on the snooze button to differentiate it from the others. And getting it set to the correct time zone may require a STEM degree.

      • UnCivilServant

The buttons and switches on my alarm are neatly separated so the half-asleep user is able to find the correct one by touch.
