My youngest was on spring break this week so I took a few days off to spend some time with her. I thought it might be fun to go hiking and, to my delight, my device loving daughter agreed. San Diego County has lots of areas to hike so we picked one and headed out.
Though the trail we went to permits leashed dogs, Moe had to stay home. He’s twelve and arthritic. His hiking days are behind him. Still, it was nice seeing other people with their dogs.
I deliberately left my phone in my car. Being out in nature, disconnecting from everyone and everything except my daughter for a couple of hours was just what I needed. The best part was the free-flowing conversation. Our minds wandered and the conversation wandered with it. It was a lovely, relaxed way of connecting with each other. I must admit, you don’t get that in the gym.
Enough about my personal experience, here’s the good people at Web MD to tell you the benefits of hiking. Hiking is a powerful cardio workout that can:
- Lower your risk of heart disease
- Improve your blood pressure and blood sugar levels
- Boost bone density, since walking is a weight-bearing exercise
- Build strength in your glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, and the muscles in your hips and lower legs
- Strengthen your core
- Improve balance
- Help control your weight
- Boost your mood.
“Research shows that hiking has a positive impact on combating the symptoms of stress and anxiety,” says Gregory A. Miller, PhD, president of the American Hiking Society. “Being in nature is ingrained in our DNA, and we sometimes forget that.”

Completely off topic, one of you posted this article from Tablet by Jacob Siegel. Thank you and a hat tip to whoever it was. After finishing the article, I thought the author was familiar and he was. I heard him on The Fifth Column two years ago. He is very much a man of the left but in the Glenn Greenwald or Matt Taibbi mold. In other words, he grapples with reality and is more than willing to call out his own side when they violate his core beliefs. If you think what is passed off as fact checking is a scam, then the article is well worth a read.
This week’s music.
Being in nature is ingrained in our DNA…
Preach it.

I deliberately left my phone in my car.
Turn if off. Pack it where is it inconvenient to get it. Keep it on your person.
Shit happens. Don’t leave the miracle of instant communication where you can’t get to it.
Kid had her phone. For me, leaving it behind was very freeing.
Once when Id left for a project out of town, I got through the airport, cleared TSA, and arrived at my gate and realized Id left my phone sitting on my kitchen table. Didnt have enough time to go back, get it, and repeat the process.
While somewhat inconvenient, it was very liberating spending a (working) week without being tethered to that thing.
Hiking and tacos.
I hike every day, there’s a game involved
Moe’s a bit chonky, the sweet bastard!
He is and thanks. He was trim when we used to run. It’s hard for him to get enough exercise at his age.
I can relate.
It’s not exactly hiking, but Mr Splosives and I have started walking in our residential neighborhood at night when the sun has gone down. There’s minimal light pollution so we see the stars and moon, and the desert cools off nicely in the evenings.
Since his aneurysm surgery, the Mr has some balance issues, some of it due to lack of confidence, so we are building strength and balance. It helps me too since i have some weight to lose and I’m sure my heart can use the exercise too. We got way too sedentary during COVID lockdowns. Once this gets too easy, I might add ankle weights. For now, I have PLENTY of weight.
Longer term goal is to be able to hike the Red Rock State Park. I’ve driven through it, and it’s quite lovely. They have some milder hikes that two arthritic handicapped people like us might be able to manage. https://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/lasvegas/hikes-trails/
For now, the streets are enough!
Obviously he may be self conscious – although being in the dark may help – but a good hiking/walking stick might help too.
My ancient knees agree. Especially once they get off the pavement.
He usually uses a cane. Somedays he absolutely NEEDS it, others less so.
On a trip to Shawnee State Park in southern Ohio last fall, we found one with the image of Steve Smith on it!
Red Rocks is a great place to hike. Nice scenery and different levels of difficulty on different trails.
Ice Box Canyon is wonderful but can be a bit strenuous. We love Red Rock though. A bit easier is Sloan Canyon Petroglyphs. Mile in, mile out. Most is just soft rock trail.
Hey Chafed, from what I just read, Seigel is taking a page or two from Matt Taibbi, as in identical sentences, this may be a problem.
Fact check his ass. Report him to the Plaigarizer-in-Chief
You’ll have to point me to what you’ve seen.
MT’s article on Substack is close to verbatim, that’s why I noticed

Good off-topic, Chafed
I finally am able to do some ‘hiking’ on the treadmill. Everyday I try to go just a little farther, a little faster. Today was 1 3/4 miles at 3 MPH. While even Moe would scoff and laugh he probably didn’t sit inside all winter, looking at the snow and ice.
Then I spent some time cleaning up the bee equipment, just standing makes me tired. A few more days and I’ll be done.
I try to remember my phone every time I go outside. One never knows…
Thanks, C
Yes! My mom fell in her condo, and thank goodness she carries her phone even when she’s at home.
Mid 60s today. Driving home from church today, saw one dude out in full beekeeper regalia handling frames. I’d seen about a dozen hives on the edge of that yard before, but never saw anyone out doing anything with ’em yet.
If/when I get my little piece in the “middle of nowhere” definitely intend to get a hive to use for whatever I happen to plant in the area.
A lot of Urban Bee Keepers

A jar of honey makes the neighbors more friendly
That is really cool!
There are urban gardeners so I’m sure they appreciate the little busy pollinators.
Congratulations Fourscore. You are much more capable than Moe.
Not hiking, but definitely fitness related. Maybe one of our Glib gym rats could tell me what’s going on here.

ATM I am reading Mojos pirate book. What I have listened to over the past six or seven months: Primal blue Print, Keto Continuum, The Carnivore Code, Lies My Doctor Told Me, Super Gut, Keto for Life and the latest audio book was Carnivore Cure. (Mark Sisson’s books are full of good info but holy fuck I want to face punch the asshat who reads them)
That’s some fine instruction following there Lou.
I’m confused. You want to punch yourself for reading them?
I should be back home by then, and will will write up the audio books from my jaunt.
Yesterday was sunny and in the 50s, and I didn’t get the dog out until mid-afternoon instead of our normal mid-morning walk. As a result, we ran into the entire mountain bike club. As always, Sonny gets compliments on his looks and I don’t.
Oh, and I had my phone with me in case of emergency or anything worth photographing, like the day an owl flew overhead or the time Sonny picked up a turtle in his mouth….

Hey, Q! How’s the little Q-lette? I’ve lost track of time, so I’m guessing she’s older than I recall.
Hope you guys are having fun!!
She’s doing great; 13 months old now. Started walking early (9 months) and is now a wrecking ball. Super good humored and always smiling, but nonstop motion and getting into trouble; sitting still is the worst punishment.. Took her to a toddler gym class today and all she wanted to do was try to make friends with the other kids (terrifying them in the process) and run around. I spent the hour chasing her and preventing her from killing herself.
LOL, that’s awesome. And yeah, somehow I didn’t think she was over a year.
My husband’s daughter’s two boys are coming to visit next month. The older boy has always been thoughtful and deliberate in his actions (sure, he runs around like any kid sometimes) but his little brother is a shrieking agro demon spawn. Luck of the draw I guess!!
Awesome. As long as she isn’t hugging friends with her teeth, she’s doing great.

KILLSKIDSTEER
My father-in-law, for his 65th birthday, took his family and friends to a Construction Equipment sandbox (www.extremesandbox.com). It was a blast.
I sprained my wrist trying to smash in a the driver’s side window of an 80’s k car with a sledge hammer. The hammer just bounced right back.
“Let’s go camping” is a surefire way to get groans of disgust from my college buddies.
We all went camping one weekend in March during junior year. As the sole person with significant camping experience, I tried to convince them that staying off the mountain would be wise, but noooooo…. they wanted to camp up at 3500 feet in the Virginia Appalachians.
That was a notably miserable experience that I don’t any of them ever recovered from.
I have plentiful tales of woe and joy from hiking and camping trips. One involved a large bag of weed and some LSD at 12,500 feet. Many stupid things were done.
My grand daughter, a teacher in a remote Alaskan village, teaches a class in Outdoor Adventure where she takes the local kids out camping/fishing. The class always has a village elder with them when they leave campus and who probably does most of the teaching. Kids love it, many haven’t been exposed too much to the outdoor stuff..Like all kids they have phones/games but not allowed on the Adventure classes. The elder has his phone though.
Just got back from hanging out with my sister, brother-in-law, and nephews for a birthday. The boys were as well behaved as you can expect a teenager and a pre-teen to be. My sister made me kill her experiment with hot pepper infused tequila, I offered to help them with their Sam Adams problem, and I learned my eldest nephew is still interested in going to Free Comic Book Day. This puts me in a much better mood then I deserve to be in.
Fitness wise, weight is still trending down, albeit slowly. I’ve suspended my subscription to the spin studio, hoping the weather will warm up by the time I’m back from Vegas. Today my phone reminded my I did a 20+ mile ride last year; in the present, there’s snow on the ground.
?
Eric Avery’s bass lines made that band. I saw them in Isla Vista (throw back to the am lynx) in ’89.
I miss hiking and walking most of all.
Your dog is a chonk. I love it.
Mankind got along how long sand phone? Ya, you can leave it in the car.
Lawn is mown! Fresh sharpened blade sure makes a difference.
Scotch will now be poured.
I see people talking about all these things they are doing, but not one of you has mentioned Firsting. It is not my place to question The Great Firster, but at times I do wonder how you can be the chosen people.
(((I))) was born into it.
I am more than ready to not hear another damn thing about Ukraine. Fuck Ukraine, right to fucking hell. Everyone who even mentions it again needs to have their ass put on a plane and dropped right in there to put their big stupid fuck mouth into action. Fuck Ukraine, Fuck Biden, Fuck neocons, fuck TMITE, fuck progtards.
Don’t watch the Grammys then. I guess that happened tonight and that T-shirt guy addressed them for some reason.
There was no way that was going to happen anyway, Ukraine of not. If I ever even watched it once, must have been 30 years ago.
Not sure if I’ve ever watched it. It was bad enough 30 years ago but popular music today is like I-can’t-even horrible.
What? They didn’t cancel so more resources could be directed towards the war effort?
The news channel seem to be losing their mind over Orban too.
*looks*
LOL. “Authoritarian”, “Putin stooge”, “isolated”. That’s just the top hits.
Wow the propaganda is flying off the shelves.
Yeah, it’s quite the spectacle of stupid.
I’m going to regret asking, but why do you feel that way? The fuck Ukraine part I mean.
The country was invaded, they stood their ground, and revealed just how overrated the Russian army is. I’m glad to hear about what they are doing to defend themselves.
“but why do you feel that way? The fuck Ukraine part I mean.”
You want to go to war to defend them because the neocons and proggressives want to sell you that? Go ahead, not me, fuck them.
You are stealing a base. I didn’t say I want to go to war. I’m not advocating the US send troops. I’m glad to see people fighting for their freedom when attacked by an authoritarian country.
I think calling what they have in Ukraine freedom is a bit of an overstatement. If Russia toppled the government and installed their puppet, it may be something worse. But what they have now is a corrupt oligarchy.
“I think calling what they have in Ukraine freedom is a bit of an overstatement”
Exactly, if anyting they are just as bad if not worse than Russia. No reason for us to defend them.
Really? Maybe you can name a couple of Ukrainian political prisoners. Or a political opponent killed on orders from the Ukrainian president. Or any country Ukraine invaded.
It’s definitely corrupt. Let’s remember this is a former Soviet state that only gained its independence in 1991. Also remember the Ukrainian people toppled their own president when there was a rigged election. They are a long way from perfect, but they are trying. IMO, that matters. I support them.
Finally got my new hydro unit set up and ready to go, except adding water to the reservoir, I’ll do that tomorrow.
I have some complaints for Aerogarden. First of all, for the main vertical supports on both sides, the holes are very sloppy drilled and misaligned. I mean it’s an ovious machining error, and they did not catch it. I just took a corundum/diamond bit that is made for enlgarging holes and made it work, but damn guys, that’s bullshit.
The unit iteself is oviously high quality and sturdy.
The 2nd prob is that the WiFi app just does not work, like I cannot even login, so no cell phone control at all. WTF? I gotta talk to them tomorrow.
Operators are standing by.
Yeah, I’m sure. I did hear that their customer service is top notch. Their quality control however is not. And WTF is with an app you cannot even log into? And the reviews on Google Apps like the last 20 of them saying the same thing. Not that anyone needs that, but it’s a selling point.
They wouldn’t be the first company to have a working app that gets screwed up by their latest iteration of it.
Sure, I get that, but you cannot even log in. That and the quality control issue in one day just pushed my button I guess.
Understandably. I would be angry too.
I received in change today my first example of the exceptional American women quarters. Overall, I was not impressed. The Maya Angelou reverse was okay but not exceptional. The obverse is substandard. Since 1932 Washington faced to the left and had a good amount of detail in the hair and face. Now he faces to the right and his hair and face have little detail, much less than on the reverse. Given a short period of time the obverse will become as smooth as a coin that has been in circulation for multiple decades. It is like they want to erase Wahington.
Over the next four years 20 American women will be on the reverses. The first two released were Maya Angelou and a few days ago, Sally Ride.
Since the law demands that a person be dead before they are on US currency there are no Carter, Clinton, GW Bush, Obama, or Trump dollars and HRC is not one of the 20 selected women on the 2-bit piece.
Hadn’t heard of a third round of shoehorning women onto currency (well, fourth counting the theoretical Tubman $20). The Sacajawea dollar reminds me of your avatar.
Coin shortage? Remember how the state quarters were supposed to encourage coin collecting? ?
My avatar is the reverse of the Type 1 $20 Double Eagle. FDR made it and all other gold coinage illegal in 1933.
Suzy B was a stupidly designed coin and because of that failed in circulation. A smaller dollar coin was smart, making it almost the exact same size as a quarter was a deal breaker with merchants and the public. When the Sacajawea was released in 2000 they solved the problem, decades too late. By then the vending machine companies had made an efficient mechanism to accept dollar bills. I think the original Sacajawea is a very attractive coin. Since 2009 the flying eagle was replaced with a new design each year with a native american theme. The visual results are mixed. Most never circulate.
The mint counts on collectors and hoarders to remove coins from circulation. It is called seigniorage and makes the government a prophet. A dollar costs around 6 cents to mint. If a collector buys it for $1 and removes it from circulation the government makes (theoretically) 90 cents. This is a bookkeeping thing since many current “collected” coins eventually return to circulation for their face value. Pro-tip: Nickels will probably be in short supply and almost disappear from circulation. Their current metal content is worth 9 cents and most of our nickel came from Russia. The industrial nickel requirements are expected to drive prices higher which means the coin value will continue to drop in relation to the actual value. Since Roman times this has been a sure way to drive coin shortages. See 1964 for a recent US example when we lost silver coinage.
read profit and 9 cents for a “golden” dollar
I knew much of what you mention, but I defer to your thorough numismatic knowledge! My coin collection is mostly Victorian pennies and such.
Go fuck a goat, Biden. Feel free to let the blue cities give this a try. Oh wait; that’s where all the problem is.

Suck it, NJAG.
I don’t speak lawyer.
Judges are often oblique in castigating lawyers, it often comes off as weaksauce obfuscation.
Weaksauce Obfuscation. Sounds like the name for a failed punk band.
NjAG tried to transfer the case to a more favorable court. Judge struck down the transfer request because there’s nothing wrong with the current court.
Clearly, the judge is a right-wing lunatic.
Morning. ☕
Mawnin, Sam.
Morning, Tox.
Good morning, Sean, TO’G, U, TARDy, and OBE (if you’re still awake.)
And a good morning to you, GT and those others mentioned
Good morning, 4(20)! I hope you’re starting to get some signs of Spring up nort’. It’s in short supply here in SW OH. The magnificent magnolia’s blooms are wrecked again this year. ?
Good Happy Monday New Month Morning:
Hope we all get that routine work done routinely.
Good morning, ‘bodru!
I’ll get a bit of a reprieve from the pressure to get month-end reports done quickly – boss & boss’s boss will be off to a conference for a couple of days. I’m planning to be a rebel and wear something other than a corporate logo shirt with my jeans while they’re gone! ?
Sorry about your magnolias, GT. My 10′ viburnum will be blooming profusely for the first time. Been sitting there for years producing no flowers. Turns out I did not read the fine print : “blooms on old wood” (drink!). Stopped pruning it every year, and voila!
UCS, I finally got to the cabin, 4 W drive up the hill. Anyway, I didn’t find the piece of railroad but maybe something even better.
There’s a chunk of I-Beam, industrial size, about a foot long that would work for an anvil. I’ll go back over in a few days, get some pix and email them. I lost your email address but wait ’til I get the pictures. I’m not saying the railroad piece isn’t there, only that I didn’t see it where I looked.
Understood.
I’m conflicted.
I’ve been annoyed with some of the stuff GW’s been doing, but they’ve gone and unsquatted the squats with a less absurd name.
It doesn’t help that they timed the reveal trailer to be on April 1st.
For those of you who have no clue what that random blather means – Back when Games Workshop created 40k by dumpin warhammer fantasy into a box of scifi cliches, they gave the dwarf faction the unfortunate name of Squats. The space dwarfs got dropped from the line under the excuse that the space bugs ate them They’ve been at times quite vehement about not wanting people to bring that faction up.
And now they’re bringing them back.
I was just thinking that “unsquatted the squats” sounded rather AntiGlibFit.
Within the fan community “squatting” became a term for removal from canon because it was the highest profile incident of it happening.
SQUEAL!!!! And now I’ll be tumescent for the remainder of the day. My Guild/Techmarine exploration force is coming back baby! Squat trikes with multi-meltas, Vincent Black Shadows with sidecar mounted multi-meltas, thud guns and mole mortars as far as the eye can see. Thanks UCS, this really brightened my day. Now if they bring back my IG Beastmen, and Zoats, all will be right in the 41st millennium.
They only have the one example model, and I like how it looks, but they did change the apparance relative to the classic line.
Mornin’, reprobates. And UCS. Damn, you all get up early.
Workday has already started. I have to do a status report that was due friday.
Why do they want weekly status reports? Only one thing happened.
One more thing?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vYgUPD2khtw
Not quite.
At least it made it fast to put in the status report. I finished that just now. Shoulda done it friday when I was supposed to.
Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man… pissy and whiny.
Started work at 0430.
I took today off. I wish I could have slept in a couple more hours but it seems I don’t work that way any more.
A bit of wet snow again, not much but the trees are beautiful, be gone in a couple hours. Rain starting tomorrow, will get rid of a lot of the remaining snow.
Looks like someone here didn’t get the word about global warming. I don’t understand, we’re the wokiest wokesters in Wokesville, at least the TC is. Podunkville folks are a little slow to get all woke up.
