IFLA: the “At the Gym” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of April 17

by | Apr 17, 2022 | IFLA | 57 comments

Sorry, I’m using the freeweights now.

The skies are oddly noncommittal this week.  Really the only thing worth noting is on Thursday we get Mercury-Sol-Mar meaning “News (or change) about the war.”  Which seems rather important.  So instead of doing my usual bit of looking at the week as a whole, let’s take a look at what else is going on that day, astrologicallywise speaking.  On that day, the moon is in Sagittarius which doesn’t tell us a whole lot in re: military conflicts.  For those actively involved in it is does indicate a new piece of intelligence, but I’m not sure how that comes through.  The other thing is the sun moving to join Mercury in Taurus.  Taurus isn’t typically known for any connection to change or dynamism, so instead we should look at its meanings of strength, irresistible force, etc.  The most likely interpretation?  Big tank battle that day.  Mars being in Pisces indicates that it could be referring to warships, which is bolstered by Saturn being in Aquarius, but the role of Taurus in most of the planets makes it more likely this is a land-based event.

    Woohoo! Doggy pictures!

    • Not Adahn

I’m just glad she didn’t use them to club anyone. I don’t think she’s figured out armed combat. She’s used a monster tree branch to clubs a couple of dogs, but I’m pretty sure that was coincidence.

      • Fourscore

She learned it from you, Dad

      • Tulip

There was a dog at the dog park that always went for the opponent’s harness. He had grabbing the harness and throwing the other dog to the ground down.

      • Tres Cool

That was my 2 shepherds. I was forever replacing collars cause the cheap plastic clasp would break.

      • Not Adahn

Yup, she absolutely will use the harnesses to get a better hold.

    • juris imprudent

      More doggy pictures.

That’s the old couch that came to us with the house (down in SW Virginia), with Becca, Hank (my one time avatar) and our newest addition – Mickey.

“The Hierophant reversed – Society, good understanding, concord, overkindness, weakness.”

    *shrug*

I’m picking up a new pistol tomorrow.

    • Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

That’s a pretty plate. Do you have the set?

      • Sean

I have more crazy daisy stuff than the butterfly. Mostly just plates in the butterfly pattern.

    • Fourscore

Now that’s what I call rare.

    • UnCivilServant

I protected my lunchtime steak by eating it before anyone knew it was there.

    • westernsloper

Nice! I nabbed a couple smaller ribeyes on sale today. $5 bucks apiece. They are going on the grill in a bit along with a pork tenderloin. RE your question last post, I am doing great during the week. Not so great on weekends when I want to have drinks. Drinks kind of huck you out of ketosis.

    • Ted S.

      Is she hot?

      • MikeS

        She’s cute. But nuts.

Former stripper running for Congress says ‘climate emergency’ partially prompted decision to get an abortion

She also lists the reasons she thought the world was not in a state for her to raise a child. “My generation faces a lack of jobs, a lack of living wage, a housing crisis, an affordable housing crisis, a student debt crisis, the climate emergency, the prison-industrial complex, and the list goes on and on. And I wanted to offer my child better.”

        So, I killed it.

      • Sean

Those are more flattering photos than I posted.

        *shrug*

      • Chafed

I completely disagree with her politics but I love the balls out attitude.

      • Fourscore

Suppose there was a climate crisis and nobody came? Then what?

    • Hank

You mean that a politician is becoming some sort of prostitute? That will drag down the reputation of the profession.

      Guess which profession.

  3. MikeS

Pisces: Page of Coins reversed – Prodigality, dissipation, liberality, luxury, unfavorable news.

The unfavorable news is that I can’t afford to do all those other things.

  4. Not Adahn

Just got back from a new set of trails. It’s got a big enough reservoir for Lily to jump in. Apparently she doesn’t like swimming, just bounding along in water where she can still touch.

Too much marshland around here. Today it was fine, but soon it’ll be mosquito territory.

    • UnCivilServant

The whole state is a swamp that just happens to have mountains in it.

      • Not Adahn

Fortunately where my house is built is on sandy soil and sufficiently higher than the Kayaderosseras that the only time I see standing water is when it rains on frozen ground.

  5. Not Adahn

Someone suggested this cabbage technique, and it seems to be working great:

Chop up cabbage. Place in slow cooker (or instapot on “slow cooker” setting) with a stick of butter and wait six hours.

I’m going to use some of it to make colcannon potatoes to go with the roast.

    • Tundra

      Rib roast?

  6. Not Adahn

    Oh, and still snowing.

  7. Tonio

My apologies to Not Adahn, and everyone who was Jonesing for their IFLA/Lily fix. I completely spaced out about my editorial duties today, even though Easter not a holiday for me.

Thanks to Riven for editing and scheduling this week’s IFLA.

GlibFit will appear at its normal time.

  8. juris imprudent

Once again it looks like a better week for the wife than for myself.

  9. Chafed

It’s good to see Lily working out.

    • Not Adahn

We’ve done about five miles today so far. She still has an intermittent limp, but it hasn’t stopped her from demanding to go on hikes.

  10. Shpip

Pisces: Page of Coins reversed – Prodigality, dissipation, liberality, luxury,

Well, I did buy a GT4 last week.

    unfavorable news.

The Bosslady and I meet with our CPA tomorrow to discuss my 2021 federal tax bill.

  11. Tundra

    Freya took a dive.

    Love these pics, NA!

Leo: The Tower reversed – … just … no… AIEEEEEE!

    Oh well.

  12. cyto

I just heard the dumbest thing of the week.

The Skeptics Guide to the Universe brought a study about healthy democracy and public media.

The authors say that public funding of media correlates with healthy democracy based on their measures.

Healthy democracies (like england) spend 100x more based on GDP. So we need to spend 100x more on public broadcasting.

    What
    The
    Fuck?

They literally argue that in order to have a functioning democracy, the state has to provide public media…

“Every time someone studies it, PBS is the most neutral and objective news source”

Nobody even bothered to mention Russia, China, North Korea, Cuba… you know, places where 100% of the media is funded by the state.

    They literally cannot see it.

They think that state funding NPR is an independent media.

    It is astonishingly stupid.

Worse, they spent some time earlier expressing support for the first amendment …… while pointing out that it comes with limits and it doesn’t count if it is corporations… in other words, censorship is fine of it is things they don’t like.

Holy crap, lefties are just horrible.

    • Semi-Spartan Dad

      They literally cannot see it.

They think that state funding NPR is an independent media.

      It is astonishingly stupid.

Of course they see it. This is just more propaganda to advance the power of the State. Seeing as how successful the Cathedral has been of late, I would say it’s pretty far from a stupid tactic.

      • cyto

The “scientists” might. But Dr. Novella and crew don’t. They are the true believers.

Which is even more scary, because they spend all of their time trying to be objective and rational.

    • UnCivilServant

No nation with publically funded media can be called civilized or free.

      • cyto

They also compared the limitations on the first amendment to limitations on the second amendment…

Talking about the “dangers” of the internet… . “Like how they only had muskets when they wrote the second amendment and nobody envisioned the weapons we have today.”

So they totally support the first amendment and it is super important…. but, you know, we have to control things people can hear… let’s not go crazy.

    • Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

Yeah, and I bet they think the BBC is above board too.

      • cyto

        That was their gold standard.

        Literally.

Except they say we have to spend the same percentage of GDP on state media to be a democracy.

    • Hank

“doesn’t count if it is corporations”

Like the Corporation for Public Broadcasting?

  13. MikeS

FYI: I just learned that the digital WSJ has a “spring sale” going on. $4/month for 12 months. Nice price. Now, for one year, I can actually read the article when someone links to them.

    • Tundra

I let my subscription drop. They have some interesting stuff, but they still are largely regime media.

      • Semi-Spartan Dad

^Yep. The “news” section has lately rivaled the New York Times or Washington Post in its lurch to left.

The editorial section ostensibly still leans right, but more like the McCain and Romney right. Their stance on the 2nd A lately has called for reasonable restrictions, the constitution, isn’t a suicide pact, etc.

      • MikeS

I didn’t realize they were moving that far left. Well, they said I can cancel at any time, so we’ll see.

  14. grrizzly

Tomorrow Australia stops being a prison for its sane citizens who despite all stayed away from an experimental gene therapy.

From 18 April 2022, unvaccinated Australian citizens and permanent residents will be able to leave Australia without an individual travel exemption, but you may still be asked about your vaccination status.

The Australian Government recommends passengers departing Australia be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and travel with proof of vaccination status documentation. Unvaccinated Australian citizens and permanent residents are strongly discouraged from international travel due to the health risks.

    • Sean

Oh noes!!! Bodies in the streets!

  15. Tulip

Garden report: peas are soon in need of a trellis; green beans are up, as well as lettuce, radishes, beets and mint; tomatoes graduated to the little pots; peppers need a little longer.

  16. Hank

I hate to ask, but is there a consensus here on astrology? Do these things apply to 1/12 segments of the population, or some subset?

    • Lackadaisical

I don’t believe in it. I always took this section as an amusement.

      • Not Adahn

Surely you’re not saying Nancy Reagan was wrong.

    • Tulip

It’s called “I Fucking Love Astrology”. I always thought it was making fun of the I Fucking Love Science people.

      • Hank

Ah, yes. I thought IFLA was some kind of sports league.

    • cyto

This has been done. The “horoscope” is a vague set of statements that most people would say describes them.

The classic version has a professor handing out individualized reading to each student. He asks them to read it and then raise their hand if they think it is pretty accurate. Everyone raises their hand.

He says, “now we are going to do an experiment. We are going to evaluate whether the reading really is accurate. I am going to have you read your classmate paper and see if an independent party agrees that it is accurate. So please pass your papers back and read your neighbors paper.

After they pass the papers, giggling begins to spread throughout the class as they realize they were all given the identical reading.
