GlibFit 4.0 – Mother’s Day Edition

Happy Birthing People’s Day! Wait… what? It’s a libertarian website? Oh… Happy Mother’s Day! I hope everyone is doing or saying something nice to their mother today (assuming she is still with us.) Remember, she put with you when you were a teenager.

Since we are talking about women today, I thought I would outshine our newest Supreme Court justice by defining a woman. It’s an adult human female. An ovary bearer. A person who lactates when pregnant and often for a time afterward. You know, a lady.

There really is a difference between men and women. Viva la difference! You aren’t better or worse for being one or the other. But you have certain advantages depending on the sport.

Male athletes have longer and larger bones, which provide a clear mechanical advantage over female athletes. The increased articular surface and larger structure of male bones provide them with a greater leverage and a wider frame on which to support muscle. Similarly, the ligaments of female athletes are generally laxer and more fragile than those of their male counterparts. This gives male athletes an advantage in sports that involve throwing, kicking, and hitting, and explains the higher incidence of musculoskeletal injuries among female athletes. On the other hand, female athletes have a wider pelvis and a lower center of gravity, which provides excellent balance. There is a reason no man, including a trans man, can compete in women’s gymnastics. Think about the parallel bars, floor exercises, and balance beam. No dude, or former dude, is going to outcompete a woman.

Male athletes have a higher ratio of muscle mass to body weight, which allows for greater speed and acceleration. This explains why female speed records in running and swimming are consistently 10 percent slower than men’s, and why, on average, they have two thirds of the strength of men. I wonder how this plays out in the real world?

Endurance is largely determined by a body’s efficiency when converting calories into energy. Female athletes are more efficient than male athletes at converting glycogen to energy. Glycogen is a secondary source of fuel you use when glucose levels drop. This is why female athletes excel in ultra-long-distance sports and rarely hit the wall during long races. It also explains why ultra-running, which includes races longer than a marathon, is one of the few sports where elite female and male athletes regularly compete together, and in which female athletes sometimes win.

This week’s music is tough to choose because there are so many hard rock and metal songs about mothers. We will start with one in the spirit of the holiday. Next is one with some good parenting advice. Finally, a jaunty number outside my usual oeuvre.

Happy Mother’s Day! (You’re welcome, Tonio.)

My favorite song for Mother’s Day. It came out not that long before my mom passed and I had more than a few tearful listens.

  3. Nephilium

On the fitness side, weight has been stable. No rides this week, although I could have ridden today I decided to slack. Looks like I’ll be able to get some rides in through the week to make up for it though.

I hope everyone is doing or saying something nice to their mother today (assuming she is still with us.)

That’s next on my list of things to do.

Remember, she put with you when you were a teenager.

Lots of people put up with me when I was a teenager. I’m not calling them.

Weight is going up again. I figured last weekend’s beer festival and the sweets some relatives pushed on me would hurt me, but not that much. I need to make some dietary tweaks if I’m going to get my weight down. I’d like to be below the weight I was at before I left for last year’s FreedomFest road trip before I leave for this year’s FreedomFest road trip. If I can do that and not get sick on this year’s road trip, that will be good.

I deadlifted 225lbs for five reps on my last set of deadlifts earlier this week. I felt solid until my last rep.

    • Ted S.

So the lesson is not to drink beer?

Marginally on-topic: My favorite Mother’s Day song.

More generally on-topic, I’m having to occasionally rearrange my gym days when we have baseball tickets (for games which usually get rained out.) I’ve discovered I don’t care for Mondays & Wednesdays at the Y as much as Tuesdays & Thursdays – little kids’ swim lessons fill the ladies’ locker room with overstimulated and soggy kids.

Unabashed off-topic: I concluded that it was probably – and FINALLY – safe to put some flowers in the stump of my dearly departed tulip tree.

I concluded that it was probably – and FINALLY – safe to put some flowers in the stump of my dearly departed tulip tree.

      Looks good.

    • Ted S.

Nice flowers, unfortunately followed by Imgur promoting tediously right-on politics.

  6. Mojeaux

    Female = XX
    Male = XY

This is the proper test to determine whether a person can compete in XX sports or not.

    • TARDis

Bigot! That’s not science. That’s just your feels.

    • Don escaped Texas

I don’t have a political ax to grind here, but in the interest of better understanding something that seems simple I’d encourage you to research two things: a) how many people are neither XX or XY, and b) how the appearance of certain genetic markers such as we understand them does not necessarily correlate to manifestation.

For example, I’ll bet you a steak that a freakish number of NFL athletes are XYY (as are criminals, I’m guessing). And we just don’t know how genetic markers “express” themselves or why: some genes are associated with certain outcomes, but many people with those genes still don’t seem to manifest the expected expressions….lots of women with BRC2 defects are never diagnosed with breast cancer.

I’ll leave it to those who know a lot more about this than I do to mop up this topic; I’m just saying it will never be as easy as XX vs XY. I’m not in favor of trannies in chick sports, but, once that is solved legally/socially, there’s still no simple filter on what to say about the kind of people who will still be overrepresented amongst successful athletes in women’s sports.

      • Mojeaux

I could probably wave this off as being half-joking and/or glib, but I really didn’t know the anomalies were as widespread as all that. (Also to Gustav below.)

    • Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

      This is the scientific answer.

  7. Tulip

Nice GT! My peonies should be gorgeous and huge this year.

On topic, men often have trouble with hula hoops while women don’t

    • Gender Traitor

      Thanks, Tulip!

I found an old hula hoop in the basement of my office – probably from some long-forgotten event – and brought it home. Turned out to be too small for me to keep turning, but it IS tempting to find a full-sized one. That would probably be great for toning my middle just where I need it!

  8. Not Adahn

    Ok,

Actually on topic question (eventually): This morning’s hike was Sleeping Beauty Mountain known for being an easy five miles with a spectacular view at the top. On the way down, there was a branch of the trail that lead to a lake that was supposed to be very pretty and not too far away.

That loop added seven decidedly NOT easy miles.

So, why is it that I’m fast/enduring on level ground, and on uphill, to a point. At a certain grade my stamina drops to “take three steps, rest.” The physics indicates that it’s a matter of power, so maybe the bikers know how to increase that? My half-my-age cohikers say that because my legs aren’t giving out, that it’s a cardio issue.

    • Not Adahn

Also, the hiking pack was increased to six dogs with the addition of Daisy. She loves water even more than Lily, and is (I must admit) a better swimmer. Not as fast as Freya though.

      • Not Adahn

A “high peak” in NY means >4000 feet. I have run into elevation issues when I hiked in New Mexico, that was weird and kind of terrifying.

      • UnCivilServant

I was distressed during my stay in Cripple Creek Colorado because short walks started leaving me winded.

Then I realized I was at over 9,400 ft elevation and I understood the problem, which allowed me to deal with it.

      • Not Adahn

The Boy Scouts have a hiking are in the Sangre de Christo mountains. They make you arrive two days before you set out to get acclimated. After six days and ~75 miles on the trail we had a day where we didn’t break camp but did a side hike of Mt. Baldy (12,441′) . We thought it would be easy since we were ditching 45# of pack beforehand, and it was… until the final ascent.

      • hayeksplosives

I remember being at the National Park Visitor Center in the Colorado Rockies.

They had a weather station showing temperature, wind speed, humidity, etc.

First time I’d ever seen air pressure of 16 inches of Mercury. I had only been exposed to 28-30 previous to that. That made me feel better about getting winded on the short hikes at over 12000 ft.

    • Ted S.

The only time I’ve hit that wall was the last mile of an 11-mile in-and-out, where that first/last mile was an undulating rocky trail. On the way up the mountain it’s no big deal, but but after being out on the trails for 4-1/2 hours, it’s a bitch.

    • Nephilium

No reason to limit it to just cyclists, but to increase power, you have to increase leg strength. There’s also a difference between average sustained power, max power output, and power/weight ratio.

    • Tundra

      Lift.

My cardio is a fraction of what I had when I was a runner, bit I can climb some really gnarly hills.

Weight work, Zone 2 cardio and some decent HIIT once or twice a week seems to do the trick.

    • deadhead

After my sleep apnea surgery, I got into hiking. I found that if I hiked every week (back then my exercise was basically at most one day of hiking a week), I got better at hiking. If I skipped a week, I didn’t degrade, but if I skipped two weeks, I lost ground. So, I chose to hike pretty much every week (at least until I got into some trouble on a winter day).

I had a goal in mind, which was to be able to hike the entire Crest Trail in one go. It took a while, but eventually I got there. That was before I started running.

These days I can do that hike while carrying a 50 pound pack.

If you want to get better at hiking, consider spending more time hiking.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

My late buddy Tad mention that it was the only marathon-length hike in the country over 10kft. Don’t know if that’s true or not. We used to hike the Sandias as kids and later as Boy Scouts. We would often hike to the top using the Cole Springs Trail or the Canyoncito Trail and have Mom meet us at the top to drive us home. Better still was the reverse: Mom would drive us to the Crest and we would be home for dinner.

      • deadhead

I used the tram quite a bit when I first started hiking. Finding the Sandia Mountain Hiking Guide was a godsend. I could take the tram up and hike down or vice-versa.

  9. hayeksplosives

I got a Happy Mother’s Day text message from my eldest stepson. ?

That was nice. I viewed my “job” as stepmom to be teaching them how to become functional adults. I wasn’t the most affectionate person, but I was generous with my time and was always there when needed. I wasn’t cold, but I didn’t want to make them feel like they had to hug me or something.

It’s different being a stepmom if the biological mom has passed away vs. if the biological mom has shared custody and is still undoubtedly the Mom.

I think I did OK. Both sons are happily matched with nice, bright girls (they’re in their 20s now).

    • Tundra

Sounds like you are simply a mom, not stepmom.

You knocked it out of the park. Happy Mother’s Day!

      • hayeksplosives

        Thanks, dude.

I think the best gift I gave the stepsons was bargaining with their father that we would live on just my salary so that he could quit being a bartender/restaurant manager. If you are a dad who pretty much works the night shift, you can’t be around for your sons, and they needed him.

We sucked it up and belt tightened so he could pay child support out of my salary.

        Worth every penny.

      • Lackadaisical

Way to go. Not an easy thing to do.

    • Gustave Lytton

Thanks for reminding me I need to call my stepmom. She did the same.

      • hayeksplosives

        But of course! ?

    • Scruffy Nerfherder

      Good on you

      • hayeksplosives

        ?

    • Chafed

Good work HS. You did something right since stepson thought to text you.

      • hayeksplosives

        Thanks.

The youngest stepson keeps gently pestering me to compile a cookbook and send it to him. I “got” the kids at age 8 and 10, and neither one knew a damned thing about cooking. That changed as they watched me in the kitchen and got their culinary horizons expanded. I did have to lay down the “try the new dish or make a PB&J” law, but they learned the new dish was usually wonderful.

To me, getting kids to try a new dish lays the groundwork for them to try other new things in life.

    • Fourscore

Because of the difficulties my ex was not a very good mother. Getting divorced and custody when my kids were fairly young, (6 and 10) I became the Mom and Dad by default.

They were not close to their stepmom but as they got older they bonded better. As adults they both still turn to me for advice/affirmation, as required.

      • Fourscore

The grand children only know Mrs F as Grandma and that has worked pretty well.

      • hayeksplosives

Now that we live in Nevada and the kids (and grandkids) live in Minnesota and Texas, we don’t see them often.

However, I set up custodial IRAs for the grandlittles (monthly automatic withdrawal from my account) so I’m still trying to help them in concrete ways.

We can give advice and even a leg up, but they have to make their own mistakes.

      • Ted S.

Yeah, Dad’s mom died in February 1964; Dad got married in June 1964, and Grandpa remarried in September 1964. (It was one of those deals where both were widowed and New Wife had done a lot of helping out around the house when First Wife was dying, all three of them being part of the German immigrant community.) So we only new New Wife as Grandma S. Her mother lived well into her 90s and was still around when I was born, but she was known to us as “Mama K*****” and not necessarily Great-Grandma.

On the other side of the family we had several “aunts” that I always thought were Grandma’s sisters but were apparently her cousins.

    • Mojeaux

      Awesome.

My son has been on the outs with us for quite a while, but he needs things (e.g., rides to work) and we do/get them anyway no matter how mad we are. Anyway, he got me flowers. He said he didn’t know what my favorite flower was but he did know my favorite color is yellow (depending on the day), so he got me a yellow bouquet. I told him it was perfect.

My daughter initiated a hug and said “I love you,” which is rare, so that was also a lovely gift.

      • DEG

        This is good.

      • Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

        Two thumbs up!

      • hayeksplosives

        Yellow flower day!

As my mother’s memory declines, we kids have figured out that she gets a lot of joy from fresh flowers. So I’m trying to coordinate with siblings so I send flowers on days when she wouldn’t be getting them from another sibling or grandkid.

So I didn’t send today but will likely do so next week.

    • DEG

      You did good work.

      • hayeksplosives

        Thanks, DEG.

Re: biological differences in men and women,

I know only one intersex person (that I know of). Her parents had to make the decision when she was a baby to have her surgically altered to be more “male” or more “female”. They chose female, and I believe that was the right choice.

She is lovely with decidedly female features, facial structure, figure, etc. She does take hormones and is sterile. She’s pretty Zen about the whole thing but it definitely occupies a place in her mind that most of us don’t need to reserve.

Perhaps coincidentally, she’s very practical and went into engineering, much to her artist mother’s dismay.

I do wonder if her bone structure and such would have been different if her parents had chosen the “male” option and put the child on male hormones. Would a future archaeologist be able to determine her gender based on her skeleton?

    • Mojeaux

I am thoroughly convinced that we each have something that takes up our brain space every bit as much as her intersexness does hers. Why should some people deserve more attention for their cross to bear as anyone else?

    • Chafed

I have only sympathy for everyone involved. There is no perfect choice.

      • hayeksplosives

Yeah, that’s a tough one all around. Parents having to make the choice, kid learning that something as fundamental as gender was a toss-up their parents made for them.

The girl herself has turned out great; her biggest problem is that her mom is a drama queen who makes it about herself. Bitch.

    • Sean

I sleep well knowing I didn’t get poisoned.

    • DEG

Shit. I keep calling him “Robert”, his name is Peter.

      • DEG

And Steve Kirsch likes to hear himself talk.

      • db

It’s, sadly, one of the reasons people don’t listen to him. It’s, in my opinion, a symptom of a very bright mind that is terribly disorganized. He has a very hard time getting to the point in speaking or writing, and has an annoying habit of talking over others, in the videos I’ve seen.

  11. rhywun

a trans man […] compete in women’s gymnastics

    Somebody make this happen.

      • rhywun

        OMG so problematic

  12. Brochettaward

It is fitting that I, the First man, The First Of All Firsters, will ultimately become The First Mom. For it is known that men surpass women in every task, even those that are traditionally in the female domain. I have the unique role in history of being both the virgin mother and the son. It is all destiny.

  13. Tundra

    Chafed!

No way I was gonna miss two weeks in a row.

Interestingly, I have a better relationship with my mom since I left Minne. We had a perfectly lovely conversation this morning that seemed to rarely happen for the last few years.

    I’ll take it.

GlibFit-wise, I’m a couple weeks into a little experiment. This article got me thinking about goals and priorities. I suspect I was sabotaging my lifting progress by eating too few calories. I was in this weird place of eating too little to stay “lean”, but trying to get my lifts up. Kind of retarded in hindsight. I really want to get a 2x bodyweight squat and and a 2.5x deadlift. I’m not so worried about bench and press, as my 54 yo shoulders may never be awesome again!

I’ve upped my calories, added some clean carbs – still nowhere close to high – and have felt pretty damn good. I will report back in a couple weeks.

Great song choices, especially the first one. Anyone who doesn’t dig pre-treatment Aerosmith is just wrong.

    Have a great week Glibfitters!

    • DEG

Anyone who doesn’t dig pre-treatment Aerosmith is just wrong.

I liked them until I moved to New England. Then…. Aerosmith all the fucking time on the radio.

I can’t listen to them anymore.

      • Chafed

        I cast thee out!

Tundra is mostly right. Their pretreatment catalog is great. Post-treatment Done With Mirrors, Permanent Vacation, and Pump are all worthy (h/t Wayne and Garth). Everything else is forgettable.

    • Chafed

It’s amazing how some distance from our parents can improve the relationship.

      • Tundra

        Isn’t it?

My mom used to give me the “we miss seeing you” bullshit when we lived there. Even though they were retired and had nothing going on. Used to drive me nuts.

        Relationships are bizarre.

      • Chafed

JFC I get that all the time. Another favorite is lamenting the visit wasn’t longer. As though you can nag someone into wanting to see you.

      • Tundra

        It’s hilarious, isn’t it?

Both my kids are coming over tonight. If they didn’t, I wouldn’t say a fucking word.

        That’s the secret.

      • Chafed

Please share it with my mother.

      • TARDis

My daughter came over for dinner tonight. It was nice. When it was time for her to go, I told her I miss her, and got a, “I miss you too.” Good enough for me, and I went back to washing the dishes.

      • Fourscore

Distance from the kids works out OK, too. My kids don’t come often, my son hasn’t been here for 3-4 years, maybe longer. Anyway, after they are here for a few days I don’t object if they start taking day trips. After a week it’s nice to say good bye. The internet connects us on a daily basis.

My parents are buried near here, only a couple miles away. I visit the graves about 2X a year. I don’t think any of the grandchildren ever visit, my 2 brothers never visited. My wife and I have elected no funerals and donate our bodies to science. No much left in useful body parts but if someone learns something from old people it’ll be worth it. Otherwise put me in the aborted pile.

  15. Scruffy Nerfherder

In classic autistic teenager fashion, my eldest has not only forgotten to wish his mother a happy Mother’s Day, but also managed to make her cry by being an asshole.

Living with the mentality ill is exhausting.

On the bright side, his little sisters picked up on their mother’s emotional state and came to comfort her.

    • Tundra

      Sorry, Scruffy.

He’s gonna figure it out, but in the meantime the girls will pick up his slack.

Families are complicated and messy. I’m convinced that there is no perfect family, just some that weather the storms better than others. Weather this.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

        Thanks Tundra

I think the St John’s Wort is having some effect on me, because normally I would have taken his head off, but I remained relatively calm this time.

      • TARDis

Good on you. Hope it gets better.

      • Tundra

There is literally no point. He doesn’t see things like we do.

      • TARDis

Well said, Tundra. Sometimes your kids’ issues just wear you out. But if it’s not physical, but emotional/verbal, you just have to accept it.

      • Fourscore

Do the best you can, at some point your kids will come back and Thank You for your patience and teaching them about life. My kids are in their middle late 50s and a week doesn’t go by with out them asking for advice or thanking me. They are probably better than I was at that age.

      • TARDis

That’s how it was between my mother and me. I was the POS because I was just like her, stubborn and I refused to back down when I thought I was right. My brother got away with all kinds of crap because he would just lie and pretend to do what he was told. He was the one running with a gang and doing drugs, not me. Lying, stealing, drugs, and all that goes with that. It wasn’t until after I left home my mom figured out I was not the POS she thought I was. I’m so sad she never got to enjoy her grand-kids.

    • DEG

      Sorry.

    • Rat on a train

My daughter gave my wife a handmade card and a gift. I don’t think my son is aware that today is anything special. At least he didn’t make my wife cry.

Which doesn’t help as much as you would think since the word was “fluff”…. Well, it was still the first one I got.

    • kinnath

Fluffy didn’t kill me. Yesterday I got down to rodeo or order. I guessed wrong.

      • Ted S.

  17. Not Adahn

Mike Myers has a new show on Netflix. The first episode was not good.

    • UnCivilServant

It takes me a moment whenever that name comes up because my first thought is a former coworker by that name, then the fictional killer. If it’s neither of those two, I recall there might be some actor by that name too.

      • Not Adahn

He made some funny shows in the past, that’s what makes this so disappointing.

      • Chafed

Was it just not funny or did he go woke?

      • Ownbestenemy

        Yes

    • Ownbestenemy

We watched it all…had moments and it was basically drawing back to Wayne’s World type humor.

I’m watching “The Pollinators” on Prime. Interesting documentary on the problem of bee deaths.

  19. Annoyed Nomad

I’ve lost enough weight that I’m seeing a bit of loose skin around my stomach area. Does this tighten up eventually?

    • Tundra

Kind of. How old are you? Are you strength training? Building muscle will absolutely help.

      But mostly: nice fucking job!

      • Chafed

        That too.

    • Chafed

I’m assuming you were never on My 600 lb Life. If so, then it should tighten up.

      • Annoyed Nomad

Yes, I’m lifting weights. Over the past 3 months I’ve been very consistent, doing 4 weight-lifting workouts and one Tabata (HIIT) workout a week. Have also been consistent with diet. As a result, I’ve lost about 10 lbs and an inch off my stomach. And getting stronger

      • Annoyed Nomad

Oh, and I’m 60 years old.

      • DEG

Age will make it harder because your skin loses elasticity. But, I don’t think it makes it impossible.

      • hayeksplosives

        Viva la Spanx!

      • Annoyed Nomad

I thought I’d heard that before – older skin isn’t as elastic.

      • UnCivilServant

just keep doing what you’re doing and see what results you get. There’s not really any other options.

      • Chafed

        Great job! That’s impressive

      • Tundra

        Perfect.

It’s official. I’ve been shunned my my immediate blood relatives. I have no family. In particular my mother and sister. The only two that I honestly gave a shit about. Guess I’m finally free to open my veins.

    • DEG

      Sorry.

Guess I’m finally free to open my veins.

Please think carefully before you do something that can’t be undone.

    • Tundra

      Nope.

Family isn’t the end all and you know it. I’ve never met most of you and I can say for sure I am closer to you than a lot of my family.

Take care of mom the best you can and get busy with the rest. I can say honestly I would miss having you here.

      • DEG

I can say honestly I would miss having you here.

        Same.

      • Surly Knott

        Likewise.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

I’m torn because I have a great family and recently (over the past year or so) I have ditched most of the friends that I had.

Everyone has their stories about the drama of Thanksgiving and one uncle spewing politics and another uncle drinking until he was just spewing. I always loved Thanksgiving because I love my family. Not only the immediate folks but many of the second cousins scattered across the country. Politics was seldom mentioned. Once my brother and I realized that we were on opposite sides of the AGCW issue, the matter was dropped. I had a nice visit with Mom yesterday and always look forward to spending time with family.

The majority of my friends were the guys that I played poker with on Thursday nights. After years of TDS, followed by covididiocy, I chose to skip the frustration on my part and the teeth-gnashing, mouth foaming on their part and dropped TNT from my schedule. I’m sleeping much better, particularly on Thursday nights, than I was.

Outside of family and the few meat-space friends I have left, you island of misfit toys are my only relief from madness.

      • UnCivilServant

I have no meatspace friends who are not also Glibs.

I have coworkers hwo I know are lefties and with whom I have no wish to discuss politics. I have family scattered to the nine winds, but I’ve never been too close with most of them. I’m just that guy who occassionally wanders past.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

I guess I’m down to three meat-space friends:

One guy I have known since fifth grade. We communicate sporadically by email, mostly complaining about government overreach.

One guy I met at my first job after college. We have kept close contact and occasionally will do things like go shooting together. A fellow gun nut.

My latest best friend is a guy I met at work. He and I instantly connected as he was as well-read as I and we could discuss common themes in books. Our cow-orkers didn’t understand our jokes. I used to say, “We’re are communicating in 19th Century Celtic puns” which tended to satisfy them. He calls me his “brother from another mother” and we manage to get together every month or so to share beers and 19th Century Celtic puns. I think that he is a lurker (“Hi, Jake!”).

      • rhywun

I still have a college buddy I would probably communicate more with if it wasn’t for his crazy wife.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

I have a few “old friends”. A buddy I’ve known since second grade. A friend from law school. A friend from when I interned at my company. A couple husbands of my wife’s friends from back in NoVa. A couple of guys from an old church singles group. Guys that I keep up with a few times a year. If we were ever in the same place at the same time, it would take 5 minutes to go back to exactly how it was last time we were together.

I have a few friend-ish acquaintances who are husbands of my wife’s friends. It wouldn’t be weird to call them up and do something with them, but none of us ever actually do it.

I have a ton of acquaintances who are friendly with me, but do not interact with me outside of the specific context we know one another (church, work, kid’s soccer, etc.)

Then I have my internet friends, as my wife calls you. She’s a bit jealous at times of the amount of time I spend here, but it’s because I don’t really have that group of guys to do Thursday night cards and drinking with.

My family is also hit or miss. I talk with my parents frequently. Not so much my brothers. Not out of dislike, but simply out of dissimilarity. They’re both in their mid-20s and I’m in my mid-30s, so there’s not much commonality. We text here and there, but that’s it. Extended family is generally distant, but not dysfunctional. Divorces tend to do that. The relationship with my mom’s side never quite healed from the 1-2-3 punch of them being shitheads during mom’s divorce + them milking her medicine induced insanity for all the disability they could get + them never telling my that my favorite great aunt died. I have buried the hatchet, but the closeness of the relationships are permanently gone.

      • Ted S.

My dad and our uncles (his brothers-in-law) discussed politics at Thanksgiving, but they generally agreed; being the 80s, it was also stuff that was less of a lightning rod like how the Japanese were buying up everything (everyone was blue-collar).

Dad didn’t like Trump’s perceived lack of class, but also doesn’t care for any of the Democrats.

Yes blanched and then cut into 1/2 inch bites and worked in with the parmasean.

    • hayeksplosives

      Asparagus risotto!

That’s an intriguing one… I fell in love with mushroom risotto, but asparagus would be a whole new twist.

  25. Annoyed Nomad

I can’t remember if it was Mojeaux or hayeksplosives, whose husband developed an allergic reaction to the Lisinopril he was taking. I recently had an allergic reaction – nothing serious, just a rash around my eyes. Went to the Dr and he’s switching medications for me.

    • Mojeaux

      Not mine.

    • Annoyed Nomad

If I hadn’t seen that post, I wouldn’t have suspected the medication. In fact I originally thought I was having an allergic reaction to sunscreen.

    • Mustang

Interesting. I’m on Lisinopril. What was the reaction?

      • Annoyed Nomad

In my case, my right eyelid got red/inflamed like a rash, then turned dry and flaky. It then progressed to my left eyelid, then to the skin under my left eye. My daughter-in-law jokingly asked my wife if she hit me (my response: “Sometimes I don’t listen and have to be told twice.”). The affected areas would get really itchy. I took an antihistamine and applied a skin cream to reduce the itch before I finally went to the Dr.

      • Ted S.

        Hawt.

      • Mustang

Damn. That sucks. I haven’t had a reaction and seems to be working so far. Hopefully you’re able to find something that works for you.

      • Annoyed Nomad

I actually haven’t gotten the new meds yet (Amazon Pharmacy, which has been great in the past, has had delays), so I used a pill splitter on my Lisinopril and only taking a half dose. The allergic reaction has significantly reduced, almost cleared completely. I wonder if my recent weight loss (see earlier posts above) reduced my need for the Lisinopril.

      • hayeksplosives

        It was my post.

My husband was on Lisinopril for about 10 years. One day I got home from work and he said he thought his uvula was swollen. As we chatted in just the first 5 minutes after I got home, I could easily detect that his voice was changing, almost comically. I recognized it as early anaphylactic shock and marched him to the car and off to the ER.

Doctor asked us all kinds of questions (he couldn’t talk at that point), and when I said he takes Lisinopril, doc goes “Ah yes. How long? 10 years? That’s about right. A lot of people develop an allergy to Lisinopril at 10 years.”

You’d thing they’d tell ya something like that when prescribing it.

      • Annoyed Nomad

Thanks for the clarification. I probably have also been taking it for about 10 years. I’m lucky I didn’t have as serious of a reaction as your husband’s. As I think I said in reaction to your original post, I’m hoping to get in good enough shape not to need any BP meds.

  26. Mustang

Late to comment but my GlibFit the past few weeks has been rucking. My goal has been to ruck four days a week and do some HIIT and core work on two of them. I’m only doing 2-3 slow miles at a time right now to build up the strength. I’ll start increasing the mileage in the next two weeks. We’ve got a Yellowstone trip coming up and I’ll be the one carrying the kiddo around in a sweet used Osprey backpack/carrier the wife found. I’ve always “enjoyed” rucking and have a dedicated pack. I usually use a couple 25 pound sandbags to distribute the load evenly. I think I need some better boots though. I have some North Face boots that don’t have any ankle support and don’t quite fit right. My work boots are great, I just don’t like wearing them around town…

    • Mustang

I also like to try different diets to see what happens. The past few weeks I’ve been getting all my carbs from fruit, which I don’t normally eat a lot of, and upping my protein intake with extra meat and fish at meals. I haven’t been good at sticking to it though so for these experiments to work I need some extra discipline for the next month.

I did a pescatarian diet for two months a while back and I felt phenomenal. Wife did it with me and we were both impressed with the results, but it’s hard to stick to here (it was easy in Japan where fish is the main course most of the time).

    • deadhead

If you don’t already have and train with them, I strongly suggest you get some decent trekking poles and start using them ASAP. I used to hike a bit and I had a Kelty kid carrier. I carried my son around in it for years. Fairly early into doing that someone suggested I get trekking poles because they can make the difference between a fall that injures your child and no fall at all. That made sense to me and I did indeed get a pair and use them. I know they have saved me from falling when I was carrying my kids.

BTW, a couple years after my son was born, my twin daughters were born and for a while I could carry my son in the Kelty, one of the daughters in a Baby Bjorne and the other daughter on my shoulders. It was fun for all involved. Good times!

Oh, and that’s kind of what got me prepared for the Bataan Memorial Death March.

      • Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

A friend of mine who does fairly heavy duty ultra-light backpacking swears by trekker poles. I tried them once, and didn’t like the feel of using them. It might just take time to get used to.

      • deadhead

They do take a while to get used to, which is why I recommend starting now.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

The poor original bastards had to do it as a forced march. No sun protection, few rest stops, little water. And if you fell down next to the trail, so sad, too bad, bang and you’re dead.

I have tremendous respect for the original captives and I totally respect Deadhead and the rest of the representatives for commemorating this event.

      • Mustang

Excellent suggestion, I’d have never thought of that! Thank you!

I did the Bataan Memorial March about 14-15 years ago. Man that was brutal. I don’t think I’ll do that again if I have the choice.

  27. Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

Moving things around in my shop, not a total rearrangement, but a lot of shuffling to get things as I want them now, is a pretty serious workout. For me at least. Tomorrow I have a surgical consult about my back; it looks like the two discs I blew out in an accident are coming back to haunt me. Well, we will see. I will call my mother tomorrow, as I hate this Hallmark BS. She wont answer though, as it takes a couple days for her to realize someone called.

    • Gender Traitor

Doesn’t sound like the ideal time to be moving things around. ?

      • Zwak,The Baddest Johnny on the Apple Cart

    • The Bearded Hobbit

      I hate this Hallmark BS

      That’s it, right there.

Dad never gave a hoot about Father’s Day and I am indifferent. Mom seems to enjoy Mother’s Day so I try to accommodate.

      • Ted S.

I get my dad a Bota Box of wine for Christmas, his birthday, and Father’s Day. That seems to be enough for him. It’s also something that he can use and won’t clutter up the house.

  28. Evan from Evansville

    Folk around?

Sorry. It’s 9:30am on Monday. Hard to navigate the time zones and have folk still be here.

    • Gender Traitor

      No, we’re not here.

    • Ted S.

      Nope. Nobody else is here.

    • UnCivilServant

I’m touching up the cape on a Space Marine Terminator Chaplain model. The details I’m fixing require magnification, so I’m not looking at the screen too much. The initial problem was that the cape was painted a solid color covered with a ‘contrast’. The thin pigment of the contrast creates a natural pattern following the contours of the plastic that ass character to the cloth. Problem is, when I bumped the cape with a bit of silver on the edge, I couldn’t then touch up the original color. So I’m painting a bronze-colored border on the dark red cape. It pops and looks like I meant it, even with the feathered edge on the verticals.

      • UnCivilServant

        *bleep**bleep**bleep**bleep**bleep**bleep*

I’ve found an unpainted patch of cape behind the right arm where the primer is showing. At least it’s always in shadow and you can only see if it you’re taking a painstaking look at the details (as I was). It might be possible to paint it in the same manner as the rest of the cape, but it’s close to a lot of details that would be in danger if I slipped.

I’ve put so much work into this guy that it’s frustrating to find a mistake that I can’t figure out how to fix.

      • UnCivilServant

If anyone cares, I’m working on This guy. I know he looks finished in that photograph, but there are little bits left, and with so much already done, I can’t leave them.

      • Evan from Evansville

DAMN. I can drum and I can write, but I have ZERO visual artistic skills. I can barely write my own name with a pencil. Huge embarrassing truth: I’ve had MANY Korean students, CHILDREN, whose English handwriting is better than mine.

I’m always impressed by people who can put a visual idea to life. And yours just looks fucking badass. A Galactic Pirate, I’d call him. Me likey.

      • UnCivilServant

I only did the coloring, GamesWorkshop made the plastic mini.

      • Evan from Evansville

Oh, I didn’t think you got it out of your kiln or anything. The coloring is what got me. It’s striking. My fingers literally cannot hold a pencil/pen/brush/etc and color things that small while still making them all distinct. Again, I can barely write my own name. Hilariously, my handwriting is actually BETTER than my dad’s, which is…even for me…fucked. It’s absolute garbage. Mostly shorthand from being a columnist/interviewer for 50 years and how he has to scribble out his notes. It’s shockingly bad. But hey, HE can read it. I can read mine.

I can make badly-drawn stick figures. That, I can do.

      • UnCivilServant

In that case, thank you. I just didn’t want to inadvertantly take credit for more than I did.

      • UnCivilServant

Oh, the most brutal part? Including the base, the whole mini is 1.75 inches tall. Those bones in the mini reliquaries have a submilimeter width.

      • Evan from Evansville

“Oh, the most brutal part? Including the base, the whole mini is 1.75 inches tall. Those bones in the mini reliquaries have a submilimeter width.”

You seem to be speaking some in some sort of language of possibility. *Looks at fingers* This world does not exist in EvLand. How in the motherfuck does someone use that small of a (I assume) brush to paint things about the size of a fucking eyelash?

I….am going to practice my handwriting.

*Sets off in determination. A need that requires a solution. Rolls up sleeves and cleans the desk for writing practice to begin. Writes name once.*

I can read it! It’s GREAT! My work here is done! Let’s grab a bite!

      • UnCivilServant

Well, it requires magification, and a headlight. I can only work on it for an hour or so before the eye strain makes me stop for the day. I brace my hands against each other, with one hand holding the brush and the other holding the mini. This reduces the effect of overall body motions, so that only the relative movement of the fingers matters.

      • Gender Traitor

I still think a free-standing lighted magnifier (maybe like this one if there’s room to hold the piece beneath it, or better yet, a gooseneck tabletop magnifier, if it provided sufficient magnification) would cause less eyestrain and allow you to work longer if you wanted. You could save the jeweler’s-style head-worn magnifier for the finest detail work.

      • DEG

        a free-standing lighted magnifier

I have one for work on my guns as my eyes have gone downhill. It works. No eye strain and I can see fine details.

    • Plinker762

      Dave isn’t here man

    • Evan from Evansville

      *Squints*

It’s 10 in the morning on Monday. No coffee nor waking up Lady.

Kitty keeps licking Lady’s face as she’s sleeping. I wish that were a euphemism. I can have fun with that one. *Looks down* Eh, I already have. Kitty is pretty much my job for the day, but I also have to go across the street and stay in that Love Motel again. I am actually excited to do so. That place is a minute walk away, has everything I need, and I get to further my vacation. I should do some writing, and finally get my Cambodia tale/pics down. I think Ksuellington (sp?) and I are the only ones to have ever been there. It’s fucked in every good and bad way you can imagine.

This odd scene in my Hollywood existence continues. I’m taking it in stride, as best I can. It’s actually quite nice, in its own anxious way. As I said before about Bridge of Spies, there’s no point in panicking. “Would it help?”

      *Squint furthers*

      • KSuellington

Yup, good memory Evan, that was indeed me. I only spent 8 days in Cambodia, but even though it was 20 years ago, man, every detail of that journey is etched into my mind. It was like a frigging acid trip, that place is insane. Hey, have you ever read the book “Off the Rails in Phenom Penh”? It really gets to the heart of the madness of that place.

I should have gotten a 14. This is funny. I got so excited, I ignored the fact an ‘e’ was not in the LR word and should have remembered that! And the word was… HASTY. How appropriate.
My seed word was SPEAK. As in, my wife who was away all week, wouldn’t stop. I love that woman. I hope I die before her so I don’t have to live without her. Happy Mother’s Day.

Now watching “That Sugar Film”. Interesting.

  31. MikeS

I hope as many as possible of you had a fun and love-filled day. Moms are precious.

For those of us who had a sad day, I just want to say, you are not alone. This is my first Mother’s Day without my mom and it hurts. A lot. Remember the good times. For those of you have have/had strained, or no, relationship with your mom, I feel for you, too. I hope you have, or can find, peace.

Tomorrow is just Monday. A new day. We shall keep moving forward.

    • Tulip

Mike, my dad passed away a few years ago. It does get a little easier, and now around Father’s Day I am more focused on remembering good things rather than feeling the loss. It’s still there, just less prominent.

    • straffinrun

Heard that, Mike. For me, the problems my mom and may have had seem ridiculous now that she’s gone. Humans are weird creatures.

I’ve slacked a little with the rowing – the occasional skipped day – but had a good 1 hous/10km row today (yay, F1). I should do a Seinfeld Calendar to increase my motivation.

We’re off to Saint Martin in about 40 days, so it’s probably a good time to be a bit more disciplined with my diet – I’m too willing to give myself cheat days and eat all the delicious carbs.

Didn’t help that my neighbor came running out to give me a croissant today – he and his wife had just taken a baking class and had 19 croissants they had to deal with (it was an excellent croissant)

    • MikeS

Quite a different vibe than Judith. (lyrics-wise)

  35. Mojeaux

    Friends.

Lost my last one when she decided to be “fun aunt” to XX and she undermined my parenting. Things are … tense. She has one bone to pick with me and I’m not really interested in hearing it since I’ve apologized for it endlessly and she can’t let it go (she never got an invitation to my wedding reception, but I am sure I sent one).

Anyway, other than her, I don’t have IRL friends. To have a friend you have to BE one and I can’t commit to someone not married to or related to me.

I have jack shit that I need to do today. I go across the street and go to the Friday Motel, about $40/night. That is all. This is kinda fun. I should DO something, but I am not yet sure if I will. Hrm. Quandrous. It might just be healthy to escape away from everything inside my mind. Just have a play day indoors. I should go out for at least a walk.

    “I. Am. High.”

    “Nice to meet you!”

Just tested out a new showerhead that Amazon was kind enough to leave for me today. I am in awe at the not leaking and the different sprays that actually work. I’ve never had one of these hand-held jobs before.

    • Evan from Evansville

“I’ve never had one of these hand-held jobs before.”

WTF have you been doing your entire life? Sometimes switch up the hand or get some lube, or fuck, a sock. I refuse to believe you’ve never had a hand-held job before. If not…well. I’m sorry. You’re missing out.

Happy Mother’s Day. Kid completely forgot and I didn’t even notice. I saw absolutely nothing to remind me of it. I cooked dinner and the wife is like, “Where’s dessert?” Oh shit. Kid and I rush out and all the neighborhood cake shops are closed. I find a small shop that sells castella cake (?). What a mess. Angry mother. They go to bed and I’m feeling like a complete jerk and then realize, “Wait, she’s not my mom!” *Shrug* I’ll stop by her office on the way home and give her a bouquet of flowers.

    • Grumbletarian

In all fairness, Mother’s Day was earlier in the month than usual.

    • Gustave Lytton

The plot for a rebooted Tora-san movie! Reminds me that the restaurant we ate at on Friday had one of movie posters hanging on the wall. Brought a chuckle to my lips.

Here are some super cool “Kamon” or family crests. Love these things. They perfectly encapsulate Japanese society: you must stay strictly within the circle, but within the circle you are free to do what you want.

    https://doyouknowjapan.com/symbols/

    • MikeS

That is a really cool site. Neat that the Mitsubishi logo came from one.

Thanks for sharing! Get’s some thoughts going of doing one for myself.

I already have one, even if it’s a bit busy.

      • MikeS

Can’t be as busy as some in that link.

I’d be interested to see if it if you felt like sharing.

      • MikeS

I like that. What is it for? A family? Looks like it could be the Japanese Bat-Signal.

      • MikeS

I tried translating the page…sounds like it’s a family crest that the author has been studying. It really is a cool Kamon. I need to spend some more time looking at these…tomorrow.

        ‘Night, all.

    • Not Adahn

      So, the Glibs logo?

  42. Gender Traitor

To circle back (Ha! I make joke!) to an earlier, GlibFit-oriented discussion, I was inspired to go looking for a hula hoop to use for exercise. Found one at my perilously-close neighborhood Joann Fabric/Crafts/Whatever of all places! (Joann is a dangerous place for an addictive craft supply hoarder like me.) It was even made in the US! ? If I started it with enough force, I could keep it going…for a few seconds. Practice, practice, practice!

And of course, because it was Joann, I had to go see if they had any irresistible yarn. They did, but of the kind I wanted, they only had two small skeins of different colors – not enough to make the included pattern (which I like very much.) Thought I was being so strong…but I looked online and found enough to make the pattern at the store across town closer to my office, and I ordered it for pickup. I really didn’t need more yarn…

    • straffinrun

Irresistible yarn is my favorite Robert Palmer song.

    • UnCivilServant

Ugh. It’s supposed to hit the 80s by the end of the week.

      • Festus

It matters little to me what mother nature does. I rarely go outside anymore unless I need to work.

      • UnCivilServant

I haven’t yet opened my windows. It was recently freezing during the overnight. I don’t want to go directly to miserable nights sleep.

      • rhywun

It’s not going to rain today. ?

  43. Festus

Good Mornin, Starshine! I hope that TH and Mike are having a better morning. I don’t miss my Mother one little bit. In fact it’s been rather a relief to not beat myself up because I didn’t call her regularly. Same with Dad. Judi had a delightful day with the local Daughters and found a tent for her eldest Son’s abode. She gave him a bike on Saturday but I’m sure it has either been stolen or hawked for drugs yesterday at the latest.

    • Festus

I should explain poor Mom’s situation. When she had me (her second boy) she was still 16. She missed out on all that fun late 60’s stuff. No wonder she was such a bitter old lady toward the end. Dad too, but he was old enough to know better.

      • Festus

When we were tiny she used to get mistaken for our older sister. That must have stung.

  44. Sean

Mornin UCS & Festus & the rest of ya.

      • Sean

I’m trying to not freak out over the employee leaving. ?

Monday’s suck in general, and this one is starting out bad.

        How’s things up north?

      • UnCivilServant

I may end up with no valid candidates from the interviews. I didn’t get my firewall request in last week, which means it may miss the implementation deadline, and I am going to be pestered over the status report I also didn’t get in last week.

Oh, and a quarter of my team just landed in India for a month (I only have four direct reports right now) so he won’t be able to contribute to work until he gets back (official policy says we can’t let them work remotely from outside the US)

      • Sean

Why is he hanging out in India for a month?

      • UnCivilServant

His nephew’s getting married, and there’s a variety of in-country items to take care of before returning to the US. Something to do with his family and real estate over there.

      • Sean

        Seems excessive.

        *shrug*

      • UnCivilServant

It’s fairly standard given the length of the flight each way, and the years in between visits for most of the consultants.

      • Gender Traitor

Heck, the wedding alone may last several days, assuming they’re Hindu and if that’s still the tradition.

      • UnCivilServant

That’s still the tradition, judging from the discussion of prior relatives’ marriages (and the photographs thereof)

      • rhywun

We had a guy come back after six months in India. With a bride.

I was happy because he was the best worker we ever had. Unfortunately he went back there for good a couple years later. That I could not figure out.

      • DEG

Indians I used to work with would routinely take off four weeks for a trip to India. They didn’t do it very often.

      • DEG

Oh… I had one Indian former coworker leave for India once on an emergency trip. He sent an e-mail to our boss a few days after he arrived in India that he wouldn’t be coming back due to “family issues”. We never found out what happened. We eventually got his laptop back. He was an excellent worker and a good guy.

      • Festus

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, Sean, U, Fes, & HE!

Payroll processing today, plus three new hires to be entered into the payroll system…if they all show up. That should keep me out of trouble…for a while.

      • Festus

Sometimes tippy-tapping days are the best days.

      • Grosspatzer

Three new hires! People going back to work? Good news!

Local Lidl is hiring – starting salary $17/hr. Still having trouble finding workers hereabouts.

      • Gender Traitor

Whenever there are job openings further up the food chain, they’re usually filled by our own tellers. That leaves our poor VP of Branch Ops as the manager almost always stuck with finding new bodies from outside.

  45. Sean

TH should move to the East and come work with me.

    Dude, you got my #.

Bonus, you’re in the right place when the zombie apocalypse goes down.

“Welcome to NJ, you’ll want have to get high to stay here.”

      FTFY.

      • DEG

        Yep.

I’m always amused that you have to pay to get out of Jersey. It’s worth it.

Yes, I know there are ways to leave Jersey without paying (the old New Hope Bridge, the Riegelsville Bridge, and I-287 come to mind). But even if I had to pay to leave Jersey on those routes,

      • Sean

        Easton, Milford, and Frenchtown too.

      • DEG

Easton? The I-78 bridge is toll. Is there another bridge in Easton?

      • Sean
  46. Festus

I get tomorrow night off because fasting is required for early Tuesday scans. How many Courics will my liver weigh? I’m guessing 14.

    • Festus

Oh no. What have you done?

      • Festus

If John Lennon had written that song 50 years ago it would be a classic now. That’s how stupid people have become.

      • Festus

H.E. That was sweet of your step-boy to do that! I’m in the same boat so I figure 3 out of 4 ain’t bad. The girls always call and gift on special days even though I’d rather they not. They are good girls and I love them as best as I can.

I mean really, Man. That voice is worse than Axl Rose and that’s saying something. Nearly as bad as Springsteen!

    Morning all,

Spring has sprung, sort of. We got bees installed but nothing outside for them to eat, rain yesterday and today so they’ll be hunkered down with their Momma,
    although she’s really their step-momma.

Trees are starting to bud out, seems late this year by a week or two. Need to go to town and get my glasses adjusted, even that requires an appointment (and masks). Will the BS never end?. Medical oriented people should be the greatest skeptics….but Dr Fauci said…

    • Gender Traitor

I wish you happy bees this season, 4(20)!

      • Festus

        This X Two!

    • Festus

Same up here. Trees are just starting to bud and the bears are about three weeks behind. I suppose we’d best get the hummingbird feeders out right quick. Robins were here before the snow melted.

      • Fourscore

Bears are out and about, I haven’t seen any but the neighbors have. I took down my bird feeders a month ago, I keep my garbage cleverly hidden behind the garage where I can’t see the critters. By the time it goes out there is very little consumables left so no reason to hang around the Cheapskates, waiting.

The ‘lectric fence is a deterrent at the bee parlor.

    • Grosspatzer

Mornin’, 4×20. Weird “spring” this year, for sure. Driving home from NE PA Saturday, 37° with a rain/snow mix. Not typical May weather.

“Medical oriented people should be the greatest skeptics”

Their livelihoods depend on a lack of skepticism. That is a powerful incentive.

      • Festus

Strange, that. I used to mostly trust what they said.

      • db

When politicians co-opt a trusted institution on which people rely for basic needs in the name of power, everyone loses eventually. The institution and politicians lose the trust of the public as the cynical manipulation becomes clear, the public as a whole fractures between the ones who still trust and those who see the lies, and the individuals within the public lose the benefits of impartial and competent treatment by the institution.

The fact that this has been done with one of our most personal institutions is terribly concerning.

      • Festus

        ^^^ This happened.

    • DEG

Spring is finally coming to New England. Trees are getting leaf buds. More flowers are starting to bloom. I expect my lilacs and some of my tree peonies will look fabulous this year. One tree peony won’t bloom this year. I planted it two Falls ago to replace one that died. It bloomed last year, which surprised me.

I switched eye doctors over the face diaper bullshit. My new eye doctor’s office does not require it.

Yes, Dr. Fauci said. From what I’ve heard through Reopen NH contacts, the CDC/NIH has been leaning on state medical boards to enforce the party line. State medical boards, especially NH’s, have been happy to do so. Up above I posted the PA State Senate’s medical freedom round table. Some talk there of the same happening in PA.

      • Scruffy Nerfherder

The licensing boards need to be nuked.

They’ve ceased protecting the consumer in any way or fashion and have just become regime enforcers.

      • db

I was going to post this in the morning thread (and I still will), but this is fairly appropriate:

We are plagued by a corrupt polity which promotes unlawful and/or immoral behavior. Public interest has no practical significance in everyday behavior among the ruling factions. The real problems of our world are not being confronted by those in power. In the guise of public service, they use whatever comes to hand for personal gain. They are insane with and for power.

        –Frank Herbert, The Dosadi Experiment
