Saturday evening links of flavor

by | Jun 4, 2022 | Daily Links | 229 comments

Let’s see if we can’t spice things up a bit.

Hey, kids! For some reason, Spud couldn’t sleep last night. So you get evening links posted from the patio, on a hungover, sleep deprived, rainy Saturday.

I doubt you’ll be able to tell from other Saturdays. Links?!?

There’s no way you can dal this one up. Dumbass.

What are we samosa to make of this? I hope she didn’t bite his dick off.

We’ll have naan of that.

Raita?

It’s time to byrani these links. Swiss will pop a vessel if I keep this up.

Thali we meet again. Yeah, this works for today.

Wait. WTF? It rained in Florida? GTFO!

    • Shpip

I was hoping for some rainphaal in Big College Town, but apparently it was all south of Orlando.

      • TARDis

We did not enjoy our drive from St. Augustine to Miami today. I made her drive for the thrill of it.

When she said her and my son wanted a south Florida vacation, I went along with it; On the the condition she plan it all. And by all, I mean ALL. Now, after a fun drive, I’m 3/4 drunk in a tiny $860K house in Little Havana.

The streets were flooded in the area and we had to drive around about a half-mile out of the way and come in from the opposite direction to get to the house.

      • R.J.

Man, I hate that drive. I sympathize.

      • TARDis

The lanes on the interstate get pretty narrow in Florida. “You’re drifting!” :bump bump bump:

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        Uhhh, sláinte? ?

      • TARDis

        Thank, Irish wench.

      • slumbrew

        Ah, Ciara.

        *sigh*

      • MikeS

Well. I am now in love with Ciara.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends universal indoor masking when a county enters the high COVID-19 community level, the worst in a three-tier system.

Entering the high COVID-19 community level means that new weekly rates of hospitalizations, or hospital capacity, are being affected by coronavirus-positive patients to such an extent that the hospital systems may grow strained.

A completely random made-up number, in other words.

    • Nephilium

Local news helpfully told me that my county is in the red zone. I spent my day going to a meadery, a winery/brewery, and a bar. I saw not a single mask.

      • DEG

Unfortunately, here in southern NH I saw masks at the gym and at Ye Olde Brewpub where I had dinner.

      • Animal

We proceeded hither to the Sheep Creek Lodge for a late lunch today. A fair number of tourists but not a single mask.

  3. Sean

    Swiss hates pun jobs.

    • Nephilium

      Stop trying to curry favor.

    • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

Oh, come on! Spud was really Kush-ing it.

      • juris imprudent

What massaman do to satisify his cravings? I had steak, mushrooms, onion rings and broccoli – but now I’m hungry for Thai.

  4. The Late P Brooks

Of all the COVID-19 restrictions that have been issued over the years, a mask order is among the least onerous to the public, said UC San Francisco epidemiologist and infectious-diseases expert Dr. George Rutherford.

Kiss my ass, you cargo cult witch doctor.

    • rhywun

Yeah, he can eat a bag of dicks. I’m never wearing the fucking thing again.

    • Chafed

The dear doctor must be studiously ignoring the effect on young children.

      • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

They ignore the effects on children just as studiously as they ignore any dissenting voices.

    Sorry for an early OT:

My cancer surgery has been rescheduled from tomorrow to Jun 15th. All incoming thoughts, hopes, and prayers accepted.

Thank you. Now back to your regularly scheduled snark.

Sorry the recovery has been prolonged.

I know two men who’ve had it and are still well. Hope you are one too.

    • Tundra

Good luck, Hobbit. Praying for success and fast recovery!

    • Old Man With Candy

I’m not allowed to lose anyone else. Got it?

      • Toxteth O'Grady

I admire how you and WD keep powering through. I surmise that you’ve got to.

      • DEG

        I also.

      • Nephilium

That’s the girlfriend’s thoughts after the past couple of years as well.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

        Aye, aye, sir!

Thank you to all for your replies.

      • Fourscore

We fully expect to see you and the missus Sept 18. Mn Glibs with a little Iowa, NoDak and maybe WI thrown in. We’ll have a good time then. Probably some unexpecteds too .

Good luck for a week from Wednesday.

    • Draw Me Like One of Your Tulpae, Jack

    • R.J.

Sorry. I was hoping for a quick surgery. May your resolution be swift with your rescheduled surgery.

    • Chafed

Good luck Hobbit. Here is hoping everything goes well.

    • rhywun

      Incoming.

    • SandMan

      Good luck!

    • MikeS

Can we glean a glimmer of hope by assuming they wouldn’t put it off it time was of the essence?

      Thoughts and prayers are inbound.

    • TARDis

May your hairy toes be blessed.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

Signing off now but a sincere thanks to all. Unexplored Country and all that, and I appreciate the encouragement.

HELL YEAH!!! I love Roger Mosely. If y’all haven’t seen it, he’s in a great movie called Darktown Strutters AKA Get Down and Boogie. It’s about black bikers, Klan bikers, and a Col. Sanders like villain who is making clones of black leaders to take over the nation.

      • Chafed

Sounds like that should be on Glibs movie night.

      • R.J.

If I can find it in the open, I shall do so.

      • l0b0t

The YouTube has it, but it’s not a great print.

  6. The Late P Brooks

On Friday, facing intense backlash from party leaders, a potential primary from the state party chairman and a forceful dressing down from Donald Trump Jr., Mr. Jacobs announced that he would abandon his re-election campaign.

“We have a problem in our country in terms of both our major parties. If you stray from a party position, you are annihilated,” Mr. Jacobs said. “For the Republicans, it became pretty apparent to me over the last week that that issue is gun control. Any gun control.”

The trouble with DEMOCRACY! is that politicians don’t always get voters worthy of them.

    • rhywun

How DARE they stand firm on a right that is supposed to be protected from infringement in one of those amendment thingies.

    • EvilSheldon

      Well… Bye.

Good. Fuck him for embracing gun grabbing.

Suddenly, California officials are moving toward new indoor mask rules as coronavirus cases enter the danger zone in many parts of the state.

    Fuck off slavers.

Responding to posts on the now-dead thread:

LCDR_Fish: Nephilium points the way: We have a TTRPG thread in the forums. Speaking of which, I should post there about this stuff arriving…. Having said that, I had very little experience with gaming (and with life for that matter given how young I was) when I started DMing. I wouldn’t say I did a good job, but you gotta start somewhere. If you find players, be honest about your experience level DMing and if they are interested, jump on in!

Tulip: I wasn’t traumatized by on-line dating. Probably because I went in with low expectations. But despite not being traumatized, I stand by calling on-line dating a sewer.

Toxteth: You said, “Bettie Page bangs”. Yes. Yes.

dbleagle has good advice: “Once you achieve a goal you should always have a new goal.” I admit that I am sometimes lazy about this, but it is a good bit of advice.

Mojeaux said about a thread on r/AmITheAsshole: “Well, shit, I wouldn’t be generous, either, if the government were taking half my paycheck to give to somebody else.” This was something that came up in Jacques Delacroix’s memoir “I Used to be French”. He picked up on American’s generosity when he came to America. Generosity that didn’t exist in France. By the way, Delacroix used to write for Liberty when it was a print magazine.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

      Well, I’m deep like that.

    • Tulip

You didn’t have men saying “wanna fud” over and over. That’s if they weren’t proposing because you responded to their greeting.

      • Nephilium

On the side of the men, online dating is the difficult experience of getting women to respond. When I was dealing with it, I had at least one person show up, explain they were dating someone else, and just offered to meet me for coffee for the off chance I was better.

      • Tulip

I believe it is horrible for men.

      • Plinker762

It’s horrible for everyone. Just the mode of horribleness varies from user to user.

      • DEG

That’s because I wasn’t looking for men. I’d expect that if I was looking for men. Which doesn’t make it right, just that I’d expect it.

The two memorable shitty responses from women were in response to messages where I asked about things in their profile. One was a variation of “Just fucking Google it” and the other was a variation of “You missed the fucking point.”

    • Raven Nation

“Once you achieve a goal you should always have a new goal”

When I was on the (academic) job market, I was told to always have an answer to “what is your next project” (i.e. the one after the one that your interview was based on.

“I stand by calling on-line dating a sewer.”

My wife and I respectfully disagree.

      • Mojeaux

Mr. Mojeaux and I met in an LDS singles chatroom. Almost 20 years for us.

    • Mojeaux

Currently my goal is to get XY to the age of 18 and out of the house with minimal drama.

    • LCDR_Fish

Thanks Deg. I’ve got the TTRPG thread open – but didn’t see a lot of additional details (I’ll check the first page ;p ).

Man…walked 2 miles home and I’m still buzzed (after 3 beers of 5-8% ABV). Time for a shower.

    • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

A friend of mine was on… whatever the straight version of Grindr is after his second divorce. Now, he was in his forties and wasn’t looking for anything other than casual relations. But, according to him (so this is hearsay) the women who would come over immediately started to act as if it was the start of a serious relationship. He left the platform quickly, and started dating his junior high/high school girlfriend. Who now says they are married and won’t put up with his bullshit.

      It’s a good thing.

      • slumbrew

        Tindr.

It always stuck me as crazy that a gay hook-up app successfully transitioned to be a hetero dating app.

        Totally different dynamic.

      • Animal

Pretty much, yeah. I still read Jack O’Connor’s work with awe and admiration, so this would be great.

If I bought it, though, Mrs. Animal would be shopping divorce lawyers.

    • The Bearded Hobbit

My father loved the 7×57 because of its inherent accuracy and low recoil. My brother and I bought surplus Argentine Mausers from Sears by mail order and Dad built us custom sporterized rifles. His Model 95 was the most beautiful gun I’ve ever seen and, after he died, I passed it along to my son-in-law. Alas, both my brother’s and my rifles we stolen in separate home burglaries. My replacement Ruger M77 is the oldest gun in my collection.

Sadly the 7×57 has been outclassed over the years and I’m not sure if any of the major manufacturers are selling them anymore.

      • DEG

Argentina used 7.65mm for its Mausers, not 7mm Mauser.

7.65 is a good cartridge though.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

I guess I’m mis-remembering the origin. It remains, however, that my brother and I bought 7×57 rifles from Sears for $29.95 and had them delivered to our house by mail. Pre-1968, obviously.

      • DEG

Chilean maybe? Chile used 7×57 for a while. Eventually they switched to 7.62 NATO. They converted some of their 7×57 Mausers to 7.62 NATO. I’ve heard the conversions are… not reliable.

had them delivered to our house by mail

        🙂

I get a glimpse of that world thanks to my C&R license. But you didn’t need that license back then.

      • DEG

Oh… and the other glimpse is when I buy something made before 1898 (or is 1899? can’t remember the magic day when firearms stopped being antique).

      • LCDR_Fish

Well, every year it’s +1 right?

      • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

        Small-ring Mexican Mausers?

      • Animal

There was a small-ring 98 Mauser, the Model 1910. They’ve got the reinforcing web and safety lug of the large ring 98s, which makes them suitable for higher-pressure rounds than the pre-98 small-ring Mausers. I had a .308 on the M1910 action, 18″ barrel. Weighed about 6 1/2 pounds. Easy to carry but not much fun to shoot. I sold that one, too, and that’s a sale I don’t regret.

      • LJW

        I have a Spanish Civil War 1893 Mauser it’s 7mm

      • LJW

        I stand corrected it’s 7.92 but apparently many Spanish Mausers we’re 7mm

      • DEG

Yes. I think Spain was the first to adopt 7×57 for military use.

      • Animal

I had an 1891 Argentine Mauser that had been rebarreled in the 7x57mm (I handloaded for it and kept loads mild.) It had already had a Redfield peep mounted, so I put a nice little blonde walnut stock on it, slim fore-end with a Schnabel and a low cheekpiece. Jeweled the bolt and had a butterknife bolt handle put on. It was a neat little Euro-style stalking rifle. I killed a few deer and one javelina with it, then, for some insane reason, I sold it.

        Dammit.

      • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

Speaking of stalking rifles, I inherited a Thomas Bland and sons Martini stalking rifle.

Here is one from a different maker:
        http://www.hallowellco.com/dickson%20martini%20303%20sporter.htm
That one has nicer wood, but similar engraving. I have never had a rifle come up as well as that. Truly a work of art.

Heemeyer’s bulldozer was a modified Komatsu D355A,[7] which he referred to as the “MK Tank” in audio recordings, fitted with makeshift armor plating covering the cabin, engine, and parts of the tracks. In places, this armor was over 1 foot (30 cm) thick, consisting of 5,000 psi (34 MPa) Quikrete concrete mix sandwiched between sheets of tool steel (acquired from an automotive dealer in Denver), to make ad-hoc composite armor. This made the machine impervious to small arms fire and resistant to explosives. Three external explosions and more than 200 rounds of ammunition fired at the bulldozer had no effect on it.[1]

For visibility, the bulldozer was fitted with several video cameras linked to two monitors mounted on the vehicle’s dashboard. The cameras were protected on the outside by 3-inch (76 mm) shields of clear bulletproof lexan.[1] Compressed-air nozzles were fitted to blow dust away from the video cameras.[1]

Onboard fans and an air conditioner were used to keep Heemeyer cool while driving. He had made three gun-ports, fitted for a .50 caliber rifle, a .308 semi-automatic rifle, and a .22LR rifle, all fitted with a one-half-inch-thick (1.3 cm) steel plate. Heemeyer apparently had no intention of leaving the cabin once he entered it.[1]

But still impressive. He took a year-and-a-half to build it. People saw him building it, and didn’t give it two thoughts. It makes the building of the Mark I in “Iron Man” a little more believable.

      • MikeS

Yeah, I’m the same as you. Very impressed. I wish he hadn’t done all that cool work for revenge, but I get his frustration.

      • cavalier973

He had a billion dollar idea that he literally drove into the ground.

      • Brochettaward

At what point does violence against a corrupt system become justified?

      • MikeS

That’s a valid question. I don’t have a good answer, other than to say I think Heemeyer went to far.

      • The Hyperbole

The Wiki article is sparse on the details of the dispute but I’d say being fined 2500$ doesn’t justify tearing down the system. It could lead to it but in and of itself that is not enough.

      • MikeS

        …but I’ve been wrong before.

      • MikeS

Hype’, the fine was a tiny part of it. From what I’ve seen he was abused pretty badly by people in positions of authority. They destroyed his business. Check out LCDR’s link below.

      • The Hyperbole

I’m not listening to some limey with distracting facial piercings for fifteen minutes, got a condensed version?

      • Grumbletarian

The origin of his grievances was self inflicted. He upped the price of the land the concrete company wanted to buy until it was four times his original asking price. They eventually told him to fuck off, and arranged with the city to buy the land next to him, which cut off his only road access. Hard to feel sympathetic. When you’re a dick to someone and they’re a dick back, it’s a little too late to claim victim status.

        Cool ass rig though.

    • Brochettaward

Page deleted? I’m guessing someone at Wikipedia saw it as dangerous.

We need common sense bulldozer control.

      • The Hyperbole

Nah cav973 had an extra ” on the end of Heemeyer fucking up his link.

      • cavalier973

Dang it!” I don’t know why that keeps happening.”

can you feel The First in the air tonight? Oh lord, oh lord

Don’t look at my link above then. You’ll lose your first.

This feels like a great song for a TV show, set in Florida, in the 80’s.

  20. Lackadaisical

Just finished moving in. Broke out the Champaign!

    • TARDis

      You moved to Illinois?

      • Lackadaisical

Hah, I lived in Urbana for a year actually.

    • MikeS

      Congrats! Long day*.

*not a stalker, I just remember seeing your post about getting up early before the move.

      • Lackadaisical

Yeah, I suppose so. Didn’t seem like it at the time but we got a lot done.

        Exciting times.

Back from our sail. Nice day on the water with good friends. One kewl thing happened to share. After we anchored at the sandbar six sea turtles kept circling our boats for almost two hours. Most were huge and very old by the barnacles on their shells. They kept coming by even when we got in the water. One even brushed my leg with his fin.

Our friend is bummed out he returns to Georgia this week. His wife got promoted in her industry and so he followed since as a data scientist he can get jobs almost anywhere. They hope to return soon for good. (I don’t know why.)

    • Sean

“One even brushed my leg with his fin.”

      Hawt.

  22. Trigger Hippie

‘Speaking from his suburban Buffalo district a week ago, about 10 miles from the grocery store where 10 Black residents were slaughtered, Mr. Jacobs framed his risky break from bedrock Republican orthodoxy as bigger than politics: “I can’t in good conscience sit back and say I didn’t try to do something,” he said.’

    Know your constituents, I guess.

    • MikeS

      He must do SOMETHING!

      • one true athena

You’d think after covid, some of these people would figure out “do something” isn’t always the beneficial choice.

      • MikeS

Instead, they just want to “do something” harder.

    • rhywun

Now apply such reverent tones to the lonely pro-choice Democrat(s).

  26. Sean

    Mornin y’all.

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, Sean, Lack, ‘bodru, rhy, Ted’S, and all you quordlers!

FINALLY getting in some Tranquility Base time! Wasn’t able to do so yesterday morning, nor Friday when I took the day off work. I was too busy attending to our little corner of a neighborhood (and apparently many other neighborhoods far and wide) garage/yard/driveway sale. Sold, pitched, or put back into active service a bunch of stuff that has sat unused for 17 years or more, and cleared about $80 while barely scratching the surface of what we COULD have put out. Now that we’ve done it once, I have more confidence that we could do so again until our hoard is much more reduced and under control.

Reminds me of new York, ‘even’ the Republicans suck.

I will say the Dems at least decriminalized pot, but that’s way down on my list of priorities.
      Thus the move!

      Where you end up?

      • Sean

On the better side of the river – PA.

      • Lackadaisical

I know someone who moved there in the past year, he seemed really happy with the move, but now it’s wondering if he shouldn’t have done further south. But Penn is definitely an improvement over her neighbors.

      • Sean

There’s certainly pros and cons. If we don’t get our broken election system under control, those lists could change.

Lots of good parts to the state. Stay away from Philly.

    • Lackadaisical

‘New Jersey had more than 6.5 million registered voters as of June, nearly 100,000 fewer compared to last year.’

      Some good news.

    • rhywun

LOL even Hudson is losing Dems.

      “I did this!”

    • Lackadaisical

Alaska woman has more testosterone than locals, that doesn’t surprise.

    • Sean

      I’m not surprised.

        Cynicism increasing.

Checked bee hives, all 4 looked good, brimming with bees. No honey yet but weather has been cool, we’ll check again in 2 weeks, get a better handle on the season. Last year we had just started the drought and still ended up OK. Lots more snow and rain this year so far.
