GlibFit 4.0 – Deadlifts

by | Jun 12, 2022 | GlibFit | 223 comments

Deadlifts are the exercise that offers something for everyone. Stay tuned in Glibchicks, I definitely have you in mind. At first glance, deadlifts look like you are just bending at the hips, picking a weighted bar off the ground. But there is so much more to it.

I’ll leave technique to the pros. Here is Jeff Cavaliere showing you how to setup for deadlifts and how to avoid mistakes during your deadlift. Got it? Good.

This is why deadlifts are awesome:

1. Activate your hip extensors

Deadlifts are among the best exercises for training your hip extensors. Your hip extensors include the gluteus maximus and hamstring complex. In other words, your ass and the back of your upper leg. This is important for their functional use.

Research suggests that deadlifts are superior to squats when it comes to training these muscles. (Forgive me Warty.) Deadlifts also work your quadriceps (the front of your leg). If you have screwed up knees, you likely can still deadlift even if you can’t squat.

2. Reduce lower back pain

While there are many causes of lower back pain that require differing treatments, research suggests that for mild mechanical low back pain, deadlifts can be an effective tool for reducing or reversing this ailment. I’ll also note strengthening your lower back is a great way to avoid back pain.

3. Improve jump performance

Jumping is a key skill for a variety of sports. Plus, the increased power reflected in the ability to jump transfers to other maximal power activities like sprinting.

4. Improve bone mineral density

Loss of bone mineral density is a common effect of aging and a major health issue facing older adults. Advanced loss of bone mineral density results in osteoporosis, which greatly increases the risk of fractures among older adults. Fractures can lead to a cascade of ongoing physical health problems related to loss of mobility.

Fortunately, a large body of research supports the use of resistance training to slow or even reverse age-related loss of bone mineral density. This includes the use of exercises such as the deadlift.

The key to increased bone mineral density is performing weight-bearing exercises that load the whole body with external resistance. The location of increased bone density is directly related to the area of the body being trained. Specifically, the area of the muscles that work to perform the given movement will experience the most improved bone mineral density.

Given that the deadlift targets your legs and hips, performing deadlifts in conjunction with other resistance exercises can be an effective way to reduce or reverse age-related loss in bone mineral density.

Not sorry to gender anyone, ladies this means you. I have seen what osteoporosis does to some older family members. Do what you can to avoid it.

5. Activate your core

Deadlifts are an effective way to activate and strengthen the muscles that stabilize your spine, such as the external oblique, rectus abdominis, and erector spinae.

6. Boost your metabolism

When it comes to effectively increasing your metabolism through movement, studies suggest that resistance training with exercises like the deadlift may be among the most efficient methods to increase calorie burn. Additionally, the muscle growth you’ll experience over time will help you burn more calories at rest throughout the day.

7. Carry less risk during failed repetitions

Deadlifts allow you to lift large amounts of weight without positioning the weight on top of you. In the event of a failed repetition, you can usually safely drop the weight without risking major injury. If you typically work out alone, deadlifts are a good way to safely train to failure.

Good timing – I deadlifted 190 for 9 reps this morning.

Tomorrow I start a rest week.

    • Tundra

      Woot! You are cranking!

The one thing I really liked about your program is that max reps last set. When you say rest week, do you mean de-load?

      • EvilSheldon

Yeah, de-load. I just hate using that word.

It’s amazing how quickly the weight piles on with 5/3/1.

  2. Drake

I’m at the gym right now. Sunday has become my deadlift day because it’s less crowded. Probably work up to 275 if I’m feeling good.

    • Chafed

      That’s impressive.

      • Drake

        Bah. Used pull 5 at 315. Today I did I at 285.

  3. Gender Traitor

Not sorry to gender anyone, ladies this means you. I have seen what osteoporosis does to some older family members. Do what you can to avoid it.

I believe I’ve read that as a small-framed white chick, I’m particularly at risk. (Taking a calcium supplement daily, natch.) We have some free weights, but only dumbbell bars, not full-length. (Also a couple of pairs of fixed-weight dumbbells – three- and five-pounders.) Have you done a column on exercises with those? Or could you direct me to some info? Possibly complicating things is the fact that I’ve recently started having some pain in my right wrist – don’t know yet whether it’s some short-term injury or something chronic like carpal tunnel. A wrist wrap seems to be helping, but lifting heavy things with that hand – like full coffee pots or emotionally needy cats – is becoming…problematic. ???‍♀️

    • Chafed

Hi GT. What sort of info are you looking for?

RE your wrists, that may not be a problem for deadlifts. Your wrists aren’t really involved in the movement.

      • Gender Traitor

Dumbbell exercises that would be good for helping prevent osteoporosis for at least the upper body?

      • Chafed

The key is to “load.” That doesn’t mean it has to be superheavy. It does mean it should require some effort. I don’t know, literally, if the weights you have are sufficient. Overhead presses, lateral raises, curls, dumbbell kickbacks, and bent over lateral raises should fit the bill.

      • Chafed

Went to range yesterday with a rifle I have shot in 20 years (fuck you NJ). I used to be great with iron sights out to long distances.

It had been so long I treated it like a zeroing session. First time shooting iron sights at distance with progressive lenses sucked. I really struggled focusing on the front sight post. I eventually got a decent group on the bullseye at 50 yards and went home.

I think I going to do the lasik surgery. If I still need readers, that’s fine.

    • Drake

have NOT shot is 20 years…

      • l0b0t

I haven’t shot any of mine, because they sank to the bottom of Jamaica Bay as soon as I moved here, in 17 years. I’m so excited to exit NYC. Although, I’ve never shot with glasses and am apprehensive about doing so.

    • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

I have been wearing bifocals since I was 19, and only use scopes on two rifles that are specifically for hunting. Everything else is opens, and mostly diopter sights. Sighting through the small disc is wonderful for sharpening the front ring, which centers the target.

      • l0b0t

I got my first bifocals last week after a few years of progressively stronger readers (I absolutely bombed the eye test for my DL renewal 2 weeks ago). I’m really nervous about shooting with glasses.

      • juris imprudent

My brother was told when he was in the military that “snipers don’t wear glasses” and he proceeded to demonstrate that it was perfectly feasible.

      • CPRM

But what if the glasses were damaged in the field? I would think that is more the concern.

      • Drake

I always shot with glasses. My younger eyes could still focus on the front sight. Not anymore. This getting old stuff is bs.

      • hayeksplosives

My husband is getting cataract surgery on the 28th. He used to be an expert marksman but hasn’t been able to shoot for at least 5 years.

The surgeon gave him a choice: long range vision without glasses, glasses for reading, computing, OR glasses for distance and no glasses for up close.

He picked glasses for reading. He’s itching to get back on the gun range. I bought a pile of target ammo from the VFW swap meet yesterday.

      • westernsloper

Cataract surgery is life changing. I have had both eyes done. It was awesome. Later I found out if someone had just told me to stop eating the shit that had made me undiagnosed diabetic I would have never had to have the surgery. Insulin resistance fucks up all kinds of things including our eyes.

        Good luck to your husband.

      • Fourscore

I had cataract surgery about 15 years ago. No noticeably improvement. In fact made night vision worse with reflections, halos, etc. Since I started wearing glasses about 40 years ago I switched to ‘scopes, made old eyes young again and fooled the deer. I wear tri-focals, I had trouble from 18 inches to 6 feet.

Now I’m finding a lot of problems seeing distance clearly, I’ll not see an occasional deer along the road or not read a sign until I get closer. I don’t drive much at night anymore.

      • Gustave Lytton

        I usually use bullets myself.

      • Nephilium

        Why not both?

      • rhywun

I’m not sure what ‘readers’ even are. Is that for far-sighted weirdos? I read just fine without my glasses. It’s with ’em I can’t read – and the ‘progressive’ lenses I got a couple years ago didn’t help. They just made everything uncomfortable, especially doing computer work which is like 75% of my awake time. What a shame I left them at the office a year ago.

      • Gustave Lytton

Yes, for close up. Near sighted and last visit I got prescription reading glasses. I can and do use my regular glasses but those reduce the strain. I’ve become one of those people that pulls up their glasses in the store to be able to read the small print on drug labels.

      • rhywun

Yeah, I have to push my glasses down to the end of my nose and then stick my face five inches in front the shelf to read the damn prices. That’s getting old.

      • MikeS

I’m very nearsighted. When I wear my glasses, I just take them off to read up close. However, when I wear my contacts, I need readers for up close. The amount of ambient light is a huge factor in this whole dance. If there is ample light, I’m less likely to need to put on my readers.

      • slumbrew

Same – close-up is fine, I don’t wear my glasses while I’m working. I need them to drive.

Dusk is just brutal for me – full dark is way easier

      • C. Anacreon

TIL a new word for poor vision in dim light:

        “nyctalopia”

      • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

I have a second pair of glasses for close in work: computers, my lathe, cooking, things like that. I can’t see the TV across the room to clearly, but oh well. When I am out of the house ie driving, I have my bifocals on. If I am reading a book, bifocals. In that case, it comes down to the angle I am looking at things from.

      • DEG

I have reading glasses and computer glasses.

I gave progressives a try with my current pair of glasses. It’s supposed to have distance, computer, and reading all in one. I don’t like them. I constantly have to adjust them to focus properly on something, and the field of view isn’t great. I still use my reading and computer glasses.

    • Tundra

I did it in my late 40s and have no regrets. Between hockey and outdoor stuff it is much nicer having that distance vision. I’m really close to needing cheaters, especially for tying on tiny flies, but IDGAF.

      • Tres Cool

Since I was off this past week, Tres Ver 2.0 and I went fishing a couple times. He wanted to learn to fly-fish, so I took him to one of our local rivers.
I learned from Tres Sr. Tres Sr. has WAY more patience than I do after I cut the line out of the trees for the 3rd or 4th time.

      • Tundra

Shit. I still fuck up on my back casts.

Good on you for teaching the boy!

    • EvilSheldon

There’s no shame in using optics, especially if you’re shooting for something serious, like to defend your life. A modern red dot optic does literally everything better than iron sights, and I do mean everything.

      • Tundra

I have a nice Ruger American .22 that I’ve been shooting with the FO sights. I have a scope that I could put on it, but do you think a red dot would be better?

      • EvilSheldon

Yup. I have inexpensive Primary Arms red dots on all my .22s (except for my ridiculous Kidd 10/22, which has an equally ridiculous 3-18x Vortex scope.)

      • Tundra

        Thanks!

      • kinnath

I am far sighted. Even with glasses on, seeing the iron sights or even a red dots at arms length can be a challenge.

I put a laser on all of my carry pistols. Even without glasses, I can put that green dot in the center of mass and hit quite accurately.

      • Drake

The next rifle will get a LPVO. The old battle rifle will be my son’s eventually.

      • DEG

If you have an astigmatism, try out the red dot before you buy it.

      • EvilSheldon

If you have co-witnessed iron sights with your RDO, flip up the rear sight and look through it at the dot. It’ll make the dot much sharper.

      • DEG

I’ve given up on red dots. Every one I’ve tried has not played well with my astigmatism. The best of them I have to squint to the point of eye strain to make them usable.

I tried a prismatic optic from Vortex for my AR build. That optic is wonderful.

  5. Nephilium

Weight has been stable for the past two weeks (trying to do maintenance for a bit to reset both mood and metabolism). Planning on starting to start counting calories to drop weight again tomorrow.

In the meantime, here’s an album for you Chafed.

    • deadhead

Work got in my way of running yesterday, so my legs were a little fresher today than on most Sundays.

    • Tres Cool

Aqua Bats? You need Cancer Bats.

    • Chafed

Thanks Neph. I think AFI and Deisel Boy did it best on that album.

  6. Sean

Ladybugs check. Yup first batch still at work.

  7. trshmnstr the terrible

My Adkins-ish low carb thing is at day 22 of 60. I’ve been less strict this week by eating a bit of rice and even a couple breaded shrimp, but I’ll tighten that back up next week. I’m also taking 2.5ish mile walks every day and I walked a 5k yesterday with trash kiddo #2 strapped to my back. Energy levels and clothes fit suggest that I am seeing results.

I was at 275.4 today, which was the lowest I’ve been so far. I started at 281, but that was after being sick and not eating for a few days, so I was probably “actually” at 284 or 285. If I get a good couple weeks in, I expect to be flirting with 270, which has been a pipe dream for almost a decade.

The biggest variable is clearly hydration. When I drink enough, I do well with my restrictions. When I don’t, I start eating a lot.

    • Drake

Excellent. The low/no carbs thing works. A few years ago I hit 230 and didn’t like it. No carbs and exercise had me back around 200 in about 3 months.

    • Tundra

      Nice!

Don’t forget electrolyte supplementation. Your kidneys are cranking on a low carb diet, so it’s easy to get low. LMNT is a terrific product, or just add sodium, potassium and magnesium to you water bottle.

    • Tres Cool

Don’t weight yourself every day. You’re looking for a trend over time, after all.

      • Nephilium

I find that I prefer the weighing in every day, because that provides more information to build a trend line. But I don’t sweat the bouncing up and down over the trend line, as long as the line is pointing in the preferred direction.

    • DEG

I was at 275.4 today, which was the lowest I’ve been so far.

      Good!

    • Chafed

      Good job Trashy.

    • R.J.

Good job! I need to do the same.

  8. Tundra

    Chafed!

Terrific subject and you covered it beautifully.

DLs are my absolute favorite. It’s the one exercise that keeps me strength training, as it’s the one I can load up with a decent amount of weight and succeed. Also, it’s a stupidly practical exercise. After my buddy was doing them for a few months he commented at how easy it was to unload salt bags from the trunk of his car.

And the back pain thing is real. If you have lower back issues (not fucked up discs), you approach a 100% success rate by deadlifting. Pretty much anyone can do it and the payoff is fast and profound.

I still am in the Warty camp regarding squats. Even with tricky knees there are ways to strengthen your posterior chan. So many oldsters fall and die, or get stuck on the toilet, etc. Weakness is deadly. I nag my parents all the time about getting stronger and, if nothing else, practicing deep bodyweight squats is important.

Bone density is another huge thing. Supplements for women are completely and utterly useless. Big Pharma can’t fix it, but Big Barbell can.

OK GlibFit week this week. I got a couple of good strength sessions in, but picked up some bug or something toward the end of the week. On Friday I did my squat warm up sets and then unloaded the bar and went back upstairs. Just nothing in the tank. Nice six mile hike in the mountains yesterday, so things are already looking up! I’ll just repeat my Friday workout tomorrow and get back at it. Never miss two workouts in a row!

One interesting thing I’ve been doing lately is counting reps down instead of up. Some trainer dude recommended it so I gave it a shot. Damned if it doesn’t work.

    Have a great week GlibFitters!

  9. Annoyed Nomad

I do Romanian deadlifts on my lower-body days. At my last lower body workout I did 2 sets of 13 with 205 lbs; will be increasing to 215 lbs for the next workout.

I learned to focus on three things while doing the RDLs: 1) Keep the bar close to your legs on the way up and down, 2) Lift up your toes – this helps to make sure your heels are pressing down, 3) Focus on using your butt muscles.

I also use Versa Gripps to hold onto the bar.

    • Gender Traitor

I did 2 sets of 13 with 205 lbs; will be increasing to 215 lbs for the next workout.

Is that one large Romanian or two small ones?

      • Annoyed Nomad

Lol. Now I’m going to imagine a couple midgets hanging onto each end of the barbell.

      • Tres Cool

        Thats like 30 Evans.
        Wait…age or weight?

  10. juris imprudent

    Sure, you keep believing this.

As Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee executive director Tim Persico told Politico last August, as his party’s polling numbers were starting to slip, “Everything we are doing and everything we’ve talked about doing is incredibly popular.”

Honestly, what makes anyone think that any political effort can deliver “the good life”? I’m not just making fun of Democrats here (deserving of it they are), but the same goes for “public good” conservatism. You keep defining what’s important to you, asshole, not to me.

    • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

Everything is popular, providing it works as you said. And, looking at the economy, it clearly isn’t. You want clean energy? Great, keep gas prices down in the meantime. Clean environment? Keep groceries cheap. You want a GBI? Sure, just don’t make me wait in line at Arby’s!

Oh, I might have to make some sacrifices? Fuck you! I don’t see you making any sacrifices!

    • Chafed

They are drinking their own kool-aid if they believe it. I suspect it’s a different conversation behind closed doors.

      • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

I am not so sure about that. One thing I have noticed is that the left has removed any and all dissenting voices, either threw ridicule or derision. Think of how FOX has been marginalized on the left for a good example, or how anyone (like Taibbi) who speaks out on various issues is immediately called “right wing” and ignored. No, they think all reports of people unhappy are right wing agitprop.

      • Chafed

        You may be right.

      • Ted S.

        Chafed may be crazy?

      • TARDis

But, he’s not the lunatic we’re looking for.

      • Gender Traitor

        Hey! No Jedi mind tricks!

  11. juris imprudent

Research suggests that deadlifts are superior to squats

And here I thought deep-dish foreskin pizza with pineapple was sacrilege.

    • Tundra

Not sure about superior, but I know you can do them for a lot longer in life. I have a friend who is in his 70s and still crushing it. He set a bunch of DL records in his late 60s (600lbs+) and still pulls ridiculous weights. He does light bench and moderate squats, but the DLs are still manly AF.

    • Chafed

Superior as posterior chain exercise. It’s not a general statement.

  12. Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

So, exercises are on hold for the next week as I am scheduled for another back surgery on Tuesday. Which is great, assuming that this really is the root of all evil (in my body, at least) Not sure I mentioned it, but I have a disc (L4-5) that is squished down to half thickness, and parts are bulging out and impinging on a nerve. This nerve is the one that controls movement in my left foot, resulting in pretty severe drop-foot at this point. It has been kind of a run around with both getting it properly diagnosed, and reaching treatment. Insurance wants to make sure all avenues have been followed before they shell out the requisite moneys. And, as we have gone through two rounds of injections, Physical Therapy, etc., well, here we are. I really can’t wait to start going on longer and longer walks.

    • Tundra

      Good luck, Zwak.

The injections are fine, but if your disc is fucked it’s never gonna magically heal.

      • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

Exactly. It’s outpatient (?!) so I should be able to let everyone know how it went pretty quickly.

      • Tundra

Isn’t that amazing? My dad had back surgery back in the 70s and was in traction for like two weeks!!

I’m happy you will be back in the game. Deadlift asap!

      • DEG

        The injections worked for me.

        They don’t work for everyone.

    • westernsloper

      What did you eat today?

    • DEG

      Best wishes!

    • Chafed

      Good luck Zwak.

  13. westernsloper

Additionally, the muscle growth you’ll experience over time will help you burn more calories at rest throughout the day.

    Yep.

I don’t dead lift because I don’t do gyms. I am anti social. (but am really considering trying to get over that) I did only one 100 pushup day last week because I am weak minded and frail like a flower. A really angry flower.

    • Tundra

I bought a sweet setup off of FB marketplace. Buy a fucking barbell and some plates. Then you will be an angry flower with a strong back!

      • westernsloper

My back is good. It makes me chuckle, I had a barbell a buddy gave me and I gave it away to a kid I work with. There are other ways to strengthen a back than with a barbell. Some of us call it work office boy.

      • Tundra

Very true, but progressive overload is tough to manage in the “real” world, beast-man!

      • Annoyed Nomad

I work out at home. I currently use a “standard” set of weights, but am reaching the limits for the standard barbell. I’m planning to go on FB marketplace to buy an Olympic set. What are good prices for a bar and for weights?

      • Tundra

Are you looking for a rack/bench, etc?

Cast iron new is around $2 a pound. Check this out before you buy. It will give you an idea.

It’s fucking spendy, of course, but I don’t regret setting up a governor-proof gym.

      • Annoyed Nomad

I already have a power cage that can handle Olympic bars/weights; also have a couple benches. I also have a set of IronMaster adjustable dumbbells. All I would need is an Olympic barbell and some weights to put on it – starting at about 200 lbs since the bar is about 45 lbs.

If cast iron new is about $2/lb, would $1/lb be reasonable for used?

      • Tundra

Absolutely. a buck per pound is a great deal.

I have been watching CL/FB to look for additional weights. I can’t decide if I’m going to buy bumper plates or not. I have some serious mats on the floor and I don’t drop anything.

      • westernsloper

I would have no idea. I have a set of dumbbell plates and bars and an incline bench from 20+ years ago. I have not lifted a long bar in a long time. Amazingly my thighs have not collapsed but I walk 6+ miles a day. Idiot string levels of leg work on the DeadHead scale but it is what I am confronted with. For back strength I have an ab wheel. That and picking and hucking things at work.

      • juris imprudent

Are you a PA Glib? If so, you might consider stopping in York at the outlet for York Barbell.

  14. Nephilium

    Somewhat relevant XKCD for Glibfit.

    • Timeloose

Neph, I’m seeing the aqua bats with the Queers headlining on Wednesday.

      • Timeloose

Correction the Whisky Bats not Aqua bats.

      • Nephilium

Good deal. I’m catching Flogging Molly, The Interrupters, (fucking) Tiger Army (sigh), and the Skints next Sunday. July 8th, I’m catching the Cleveland Punk in Drublic show. The participating brewery list online looks good, and I don’t believe it’s complete. I stopped at a brewery today that leans heavily into the 90’s/00’s ska-punk aesthetic, and asked one of the brewers if they were going to be pouring at the fest, and they said yes (but they aren’t on the brewery list).

      • Timeloose

Great. We have a bunch of shows coming up this year. Possibly Fishbone in September.

      • PudPaisley

I don’t care much for punk music, but I’ve always loved the Punk in Drublic album. I still listen to it a couple times a year.

  15. DEG

deadlifts can be an effective tool for reducing or reversing this ailment.

Though if you have say an impinged nerve from a disc herniation, get that taken care of first.

The last week was a bit of a de-load week for me, though I did push myself with a few things.

I tried maxing out one of the cable machines at the gym for triceps pushdowns. I’ve noticed the weight I’m using going up, and getting closer to the maximum weight for the cable machine. I tried the whole stack (97.5 lbs according to the label, usual cable machine caveats apply). I managed two reps.

For bench press, my last work set was eight reps of 195 lbs. I thought I could do nine, but since this was a de-load and I again didn’t have a spotter, I didn’t do more.

I think last week I posted about doing kettlebell swings with a 88 lb kettlebell. I did that again this week, but for more reps and better reps.

I returned today from PA. I was in Pennsylvania for the Oaks Gun Show. It was a good show. Lots of people of both sexes, all colors, and shapes and sizes were buying and selling guns. Unfortunately, I could not find a Tavor 7. I also could not find “India’s Enfields”. I did spend a lot of money on other stuff. It was a good show.

Earlier today I attended a campaign event for someone running for US House in NH. He said some of the right things like “Inflation is a monetary phenomena. We need to stop spending.” Some of his campaign staff are familiar with Rothbard. I kicked in a little money for him. I talked with the head of the Town Republican Committee for my town. I told her that I’m one of those “evil libertarians infesting the Republican Party that Sununu hates.” She loved it and told me she wants more people like me in the Republican party.

    • westernsloper

She loved it and told me she wants more people like me in the Republican party.

And that would change what? (ok that sounded dickish)

      You lift big Deg. Respect.

No comment on the gun show. Guns are the devil.

      • DEG

And that would change what? (ok that sounded dickish)

Libertarians are slowly taking over the NH Republican party. More means it happens faster.

        You lift big Deg. Respect.

Thanks. But to put it in perspective, I’m average at best for my gym.

        Guns are the devil.

Which is why I like them.

      • westernsloper

Libertarians are slowly taking over the NH Republican party. More means it happens faster.

What happens faster? They all give in to the Bushes and Romneys?

      • Tundra

You seem to be in a contrary mood today.

      • westernsloper

Ya, the sun came up today so I went there. I have issues because I paid attention a few times.

      • DEG

        He is.

Given how much these folks hate the Bushes, Romneys, and Sununus, I don’t see them caving to those folks any time soon.

      • westernsloper

        ?

      • westernsloper

Sorry about the contrary. I honestly try to curb that here but I fail. You guys have a great weekend! I am going to go big carb tonight and cook some corn tortillas for some carne asada tacos.

      • DEG

cook some corn tortillas for some carne asada tacos.

        That sounds delicious.

        Enjoy!

      • Tundra

        Never apologize!

I’m going big carb tonight, too!.

      • Tulip

        Ooh, I want video.

      • Sean

        Hawt.

Strips & filets today. Weather cooperated for grilling. ?

      • Tundra

        Filets are cooking now.

Kinda windy, but temps are coming up nicely.

      • Grumbletarian

Libertarians are slowly taking over the NH Republican party. More means it happens faster.

Are we talking the Mises Caucus libertarians, or the ones leaving the LPNH because of the MC people?

      • DEG

Definitely not the latter. This has been going on for a long time.

A significant number gave up on the LP a long time ago or never were affiliated with the LP (small l libertarians).

      • Zwak, who counted all his blessings, and counted only one.

In my eyes, this is what we should be doing; moving the conversation to a more libertarian friendly area. And we do this by influencing the major parties. I mean, lets be honest, there are more of them than there are of us, both liberals and conservatives. We are not going to win any major elections, only nibble away at local stuff. While that is not a bad thing per se, it isn’t going to get us to a position were we want the country to be. And if we sit back and do nothing other than bitch about how things are going downhill, we aren’t doing a good job of advocating for what we believe in, liberty.

        Fuck that.

      • DEG

Also note the Republicans have much easier ballot access.

The libertarians taking over the NH Republican party have made common cause with small government conservatives. There are some in the NH Republican party.

My snarky comment about Sununu and libertarians taking over the Republican party is based in fact. A leaked recording of him giving what he thought was a private speech to some Republican big-wigs included him talking about how much he hates libertarians and thinks there is no place for them in the Republican party. We’ve done something good in pissing him off.

    • Sean

” Lots of people of both sexes, all colors, and shapes and sizes were buying and selling guns. ”

Fact. It’s very noticeable even over just a couple years ago.

It’s a shame Naptown Bill isn’t here to discuss kettlebell exercises.

  16. Scruffy Nerfherder

23 road miles today. Not as painful as the last ride but my butt is still not saddle ready. Going to start increasing frequency to try and get past that.

    • Nephilium

Weather has been shit the past week. Even the days it wasn’t supposed to rain wound up having heavy clouds and rainstorms blow through. Today was supposed to be thunderstorms, and there was heavy cloud cover, so I did other things. No rain today.

There are other ways to strengthen a back than with a barbell.

A wheelbarrow and a pile of big rocks.

  18. creech

Grandpa Creech needs to stay away from grandkids’ sporting events. I went to the youngest’s baseball game today and they lost 10-8 and were eliminated from the tourney.
It was only their thrid loss of the year. Youngest was called out three times on pitches over his head. Coaches try to teach the kids the strike zone and then some bumbling umpire undoes the whole thing, so the kids start flailing at every pitch. By the way, I attend at least one game every year that the four grandkids participate in. I kid you not – I’ve never seen their teams win even a single game! I’ve seen a 42-3 softball blowout where half the team is sobbing on the field until the 3 inning mercy rule is called. I’ve seen a game losing “grand slam” on a ball hit to the pitcher. Maybe next year will be better??

I tweaked my left hip/lower back. Not sure when, yesterday weeding or today hauling the vacuum up and down the step stool. Trying to stretch it out.

Anyway, made a gar!ic goat cheese tart and paired it with a beet, walnut and lettuce salad. Yum!

I am way, way too old now to go run around in 105 degree weather. Did some more gardening like a twat and now I need gatoraide badly. Having Chinese fast food.

    • DEG

I tweaked my left hip/lower back. Not sure when, yesterday weeding or today hauling the vacuum up and down the step stool. Trying to stretch it out.

      Sorry.

Moving it/stretching it is a good idea.

  22. TARDis

It wasn’t my intention, but I got a great work-out yesterday. Most everything is sore; Back, glutes, thighs, triceps, shoulders, and even ribs. What did I do? About 40 minutes on a Jet-ski. Too bad my weak girly hands gave out on me. Today was a travel back home day, and I’m exhausted. Tomorrow will hopefully be a day of rest.

  23. R C Dean

Sundays are usually my deadlift day, but not today. This week was fishing, so I’m still in catch-up mode for not working out at all for a week.

Mrs. Dean is very strict on my form. I could get more off the ground, but not with good form. I’ve been at around 195 (two sets of of five) for my heaviest. The usual drill is 10 x 115 to get everything moving, then 10 x 145, 10 x 165, 10 x 185 (maybe in two sets of five), then 195, and back down the ladder with 5x sets. I think I can skip the 145 sets now and start to “save” some lifts for heavier weights.

    Deadlifts are my favorite lift.

I think some of you people need to show greater appreciation for my artistry, skill, and dedication.

      • straffinrun

I show the proper amount of appreciation. No more, no less.

      • Brochettaward

I’m the only one here who encourages you to be the real you queer you, straf. Just want you to be happy and stop living in the closet. I mean, you’ll never be First, but you can be the most second version of yourself that you will ever be with the man of your dreams.

I heard someone say today that they thought the black actress from Obi Wan was just plain bad, but that they felt bad for saying so because of the racism backlash. Wanted to say that YOU are the reason Disney accused their own fans of being racist. Not any, you know, actual racists.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

She just comes from a long and distinguished line of bad Star Wars actresses. I’m looking at you Natalie (who was nice to look at but, holy shit, the acting was poorer than piss poor).

      • rhywun

I only know her from Beautiful Girls, and she was pretty good in that.

      • C. Anacreon

She won the Best Actress Oscar for Black Swan. I think her acting improved over time. otoh, maybe she won the Oscar because of her neklid lesbian sex scene with Mila Kunis in that film.

      • CPRM

        neklid

Now I’m seeing a Sugar Free monstrosity with eyes on it’s neck.

      • CPRM

If they ain’t got a coke nail they ain’t gonna be a good Star Wars actress.

      • rhywun

Oh wow. Except it should be the pinkie. Or so I’ve heard.

      • CPRM

To be fair, even the good actors that were in the prequals didn’t give good performances.

      • Plinker762

That wasn’t a neklid lesbian sex scene.

  28. CPRM

I grabbed the oldest nephew this afternoon. He didn’t have any interest in learning to drive the lawn mower (my mission this summer is to train him to mow lawn), but he pumped up the tires and helped me take the trash out. After I got done mowing the lawn we played some Civ VI. He was having so much fun both of us forgot I hadn’t fed him dinner until almost 8pm when I asked if he was hungry, then he had some hot pockets before I took him home.

    • Chafed

Deadlift sounds easier that jumping exercises at this point, Chafed. Thx.

    • Chafed

Not that you will get it all back, but have you tried any plyometric jumping exercises? And you are right, they will kick your ass.

      • straffinrun

Some of the guys on the team did band jumping trying. Blew their knees out by their 30’s. ?‍♂️

      • straffinrun

        Trying? Ugh. Exercises.

  30. Ownbestenemy

Pork, chicken and ribs all work nice on the pellet smoker. Wasn’t a fan of the brisket, though still came out good. It just doesn’t develop that good bark.

Before the Super Bowl I shared that I had heard an interview with NBC NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya where she didn’t sound like the typical leftie media person and then I looked her up she claimed to be a libertarian. She retired from sports casting after the Super Bowl and in my youtube feed I got suggested her new podcast. I don’t know who Dave Rubin is, but many of you seem to like him, and she interviewed him.

Time for the gym. Mornin’ All!

  37. Grosspatzer

    Mornin’, reprobates.

  38. Gender Traitor

Good morning, ‘patzie, DEG, Stinky, Teh Hype, Tulip, & Sean!

Little Black Cat acquired a new obsession this morning. After following me into the bathroom, he became intrigued by one of the cabinet doors in the vanity and began to paw at it, trying to get it open. (It’s held shut by a weak magnet.) I made the mistake of opening it, thinking that would show him there was nothing of interest in there. He remained after I shut the cabinet door and left the room, trying to get it back open – which would invariably have led to THUMP THUMP as he pulled at it and the magnet pulled it back shut. I tried to distract him by carrying him to the window by my craft table…but he marched right back to the bathroom. I had to shut and latch the bathroom door to keep him out.

    • Grosspatzer

Mornin’, GT. What could be in that vanity that LBC finds so intriguing? Hopefully not multi-legged creatures.

      • Gender Traitor

Oh, no – not as far as I can see. Who the heck knows what’s going on in the mind of a cat that’s too clever by half? Maybe he smelled some soap or lotion.

      • Gender Traitor

I should add he’s also intrigued by the kitchen cabinets. I frequently go into the kitchen and find one or more of the lower cabinet doors hanging open. (No tiny critters in there, either.)

      • UnCivilServant

(No tiny critters in there, either.)

        Just the capybera.

      • Gender Traitor

        +1 R.O.U.S.

The cat probably thinks he can take it. He’s certainly thinks he’s a match for the Big Cat that’s close to twice his size (and he is, because LBC is sneakier.)

  39. Grosspatzer

Sean, how did you miss this one?

    https://www.nj.com/news/2022/06/why-are-people-boycotting-martins-potato-rolls.html

Those tasty Martin’s potato rolls that have been a staple of every sandwich, especially at Shake Shack, are now part of a political firestorm.

The reason: Members of the Martin’s family have financially supported Trump-backed Pennsylvania Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano.

Followed by a laundry list of Mastriano’s indiscretions. This one is my favorite:

Meanwhile, Insider reported that he has suggested that Pfizer and Moderna’s mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are not true vaccines.

Narrator: They are not true vaccines.

So I rewatched Megaforce yesterday. It was a childhood favorite, I saw it in the theater and spent the remainder of the year imagining my BMX bike was equipped with rockets and machineguns. Sadly, the movie does not hold well to adult viewing.

    • Sean

      I sorta remember that movie.

I spent yesterday afternoon half watching Puppetmaster and Puppetmaster 2 on Comet.

  43. Fourscore

Yesterday my middle granddaughter visited. Kids all grew up to be successful hardworking and well rounded individuals. We had adult conversations and she confessed to being libertarian. That’s 3 out of 3. None are really in depth libs but all understand that the government is the problem. This one switched high schools as a sophomore and went to a charter school.
