Tonight I’m going to do server maintenance as we have maxed out the resources. Maintenance will begin at 8pm ET, and is expected to take several hours. I will update this post when the maintenance is complete.
Update 8pm ET: Database backup in progress. Feel free to keep commenting. Will update in a couple hours once I start the fiddly bits.
Update 12:20am ET 6.16.22: We are in the middle of migration at the moment, but we are mostly back online. 101 GIGS of content has been moved over to our new server so far. The site will likely be in various stages of intermittent functionality as everything finishes propagating over the next 20 hours, but we should be in pretty good shape. It’s already loading sooooo much faster, and the front page caching issue is no longer an issue. I’m going to let the site settle out over the next 72 hours before upgrading WordPress because it is a huge upgrade.
Thank you so much!
*cues up*
I think I have a Glibs addiction. A few site glitches does indeed induce reeeeeeeeing.
Oh, that will be me REEEEEE’ing right along with everyone else, friend.
Everyone will be on zoom anyway
I won’t.
Which is why I timed it this way. 😉
If it wasn’t for Glibs I’d have no friends.
I happen to know that is not true.

~$ echo “Ow! Tortilla!”
~$ echo “Owwwwww! *whimper*”
Thanks, WebDom!
Rhee. Rhee, indeed. WebDom is just doing the needful but it is a nut-punch to shut-ins like me ;-).
Rhee, Payola, and Kennedy.

8pm?
*Shrugs*
That’s when I go to save the Commonwealth anyway.
Weird euphemism, but okay.
What are the resource problems? Is it a function of what the data center provides? Is it on the database backend or the WP code? Apache/nginx/something else?
Not enough bites in the long term Ram storage is causing the parallel print drivers to hang.
Also need more dedotated wam to server.
There’s several problems.
First big problem is the resources allocated to MySQL on the virtual private server are continually maxed out. Second, we are on dedicated WordPress hosting, which just simply isn’t cut out for the amount of updates and traffic we are seeing now. It was great before, but it’s no longer adequate as the community has grown. Third, we are a major version behind in PHP. Fourth, we are behind on WordPress updates. And, fifth, the theme is deprecated and no longer fully supported.
Tonight I’m doing the resource allocation for the MySQL server. Then migrating from WordPress dedicated to a large VPS (which should also result in a PHP upgrade at the same time), and then updating WordPress.
Hopefully all these will give us enough stability that I don’t have to throw together a new design, and we can nurse this one along until I have time in August to fully debug a new design.
THEORETICALLY, tonight’s work should be straight forward and seamless (thanks to redundancies), and there should be minimal downtime, but you never know, which is why I’m allocating my night to this project.
Thank you for all the work.
We’re a rowdy and ill-spoken bunch, but we do appreciate it.

And, fifth, the theme is deprecated and no longer fully supported.
?
Why does that always happen with the good themes and UI? It’s as if UI is progressing towards unusable.
Yes. I’m looking forward to the future where some 40″ monitor has the effective resolution of the CGA one I had on my PC XT.
Huh. Doesn’t display emojis at the moment.
Thank you webdom for this buttload of work and everything else. Much appreciated from a grumpy a-hole.
The theme we’re using is the unwanted bastard child for the theme company who created it, and not updated concurrently with WordPress updates.
Luckily, I have been a web designer since the 90s, so I can recreate this theme in an afternoon. I just need an uninterrupted afternoon in which to do that, and that’s not going to happen until August.
Also, we expect you to livestream the update process via the Zoom!
Ah, I now understand your comment when I popped on lol
Right on, thanks WebDom. I will be camping ? then. Just in fabulous Bishop, CA picking up some sandwiches and enjoying the rodeo crowd in this local place.
Headed up to Kings Canyon?
Yay!
Also, is that rabbi Barbie?
The American Petroleum Institute, which is the premier organization for engineering standards for the US (and global) oil industry, has issued a response letter to Joe Biden following his moronic and despotic threats against the oil industry to reduce their prices. It contains concrete policy actions that the President could take to contribute to solving the problems his own administration has created.
The administration doesn’t want solutions, they want to blame the oil industry
Yes, but what engineers do is offer solutions. We don’t take blame, we fix the problem. We don’t like to commiserate, either, without corrective action.
Thank you!!!
Thank you for your service!
Thank you for this! Thank you! Thank you! Thank You!
You’re welcome! Sorry it conflicted with your post.
342am: we are still up and still seem to be mostly stable. Woohoo!
. 101 GIGS of content has been moved over to our new server so far.
People with porn collections would say that’s nothing.
