Of all the things that happened this week, thereβs just too much to ignore and focus on something mostly irrelevant.
Nah.
This is my review of Tsingtao:
As some of you may be aware, there is a show on Netflix called Stranger Things. Β Its rather popular and predictably it is made by a troupe of virtue signaling morons. Β The part that might throw you for a loop is that itβs actually really good for a modern show. Β Although I use the word modern loosely.
For those unaware, the show is set in the 80βs and it includes plot lines involving government experiments gone terribly awry, otherworldly monsters, Soviet conspiracies, nerd culture, and Winona Ryder. Stuff this crowd might actually like. Β Personally, I didnβt know they freed Winona from prison after that shoplifting thing.
Part of the fun of the show is the nostalgia is integral to the plot, so you can turn the random cultural references into a drinking game. Β Well into the current season however, something odd happened. Β Millennials discovered Kate Bush. Β I had heard a cover of the song before, from some Emo band whoβs name I canβt remember but struck me they wished they were Depeche Mode, so I recognized it fairly quickly. Β They played the song in the background of a rather important scene. Hereβs a clip.
The song when it was initially released had some middling success but the show drew enough interest it is suddenly in the top 10 in the charts in both the US and UK. Β I also didnβt realize the charts were still a thing. Β Why the interest now? Β One theory I came across is her music was just way ahead of her time. Β Which doesnβt make sense to me because she has the fluffy hair, and the 80βs dance hottie thing that I am certain you are paying more attention to that what I am presently writing. Β Yoβ¦ OVER HERE. Β The video to the song also has the 80βs interpretive, electronic dance erotica thing going for it too, as well as regular British weirdness passed off as artistic. Β Iβm afraid its totally 80βs.
I think the reason goes back to the theory that I subscribe to that we are stuck in a cultural rut, because millennials are incapable of creating culture, so they just borrow it from somewhere else.
So I continue the cheap beer thing thinking what can be cheaper than one imported from China? Β Well its not that cheap and since it was founded by dirty Western foreigners itβs not that bad either. Β I had it before in bottles. Β For some reason this had a slight metallic aftertaste I assume from the can. Β Was a bit disappointing so next time Iβll stick to bottles with this one. Β Tsingtao: Β 2.1/5
Any time I get (free) access to XM it’s straight to New Wave and 80s nostalgia. Kate Bush was ahead of her time but that song got a fair amount of radio play in the 80s and rotation on New Wave radio stations since then.
Sorry if I am repeating myself for the hundredth time, but these guys put out 100% free (itβs voluntary donation based) and commercial free 24/7 music. I listen to other stations of theirs but this is their New Wave station.

Cool
Tsingtao was a staple at Chinese restaurants in NYC.
Same on this coast. That was the one beer that was always on the menu. I can’t remember the last time I saw it in a restaurant. Probably one of the fake Japanese brands now, in addition to the actual domestics.
It’s fairly common here at Chinese restaurants.
In the Japanese brand beer news, Sapporo brewing just acquired Stone Brewing, making it the second California brewery that they’ve acquired.
Same in Houston.
There’s a place called [redacted] that stays open after “last call” so bar and restaurant workers have a place to go. If you order “special tea” they pour Tsingtao into a teapot and bring it (and the opaque teacups) to your table.
Most Chinese places I go to are for take out, but the βhigher classβ ones still carry it.
That slightly metallic aftertaste is from the tiny transmitters you ingested.
/tin foil hat off
Cans suck, particularly modern Kleenex walled ones. Beer, particularly so called craft beer, has gone to shit over the past twenty years.
The Mrs. and I will not drink beer from cans. We can’t get past the metallic taste.
Fun fact, on one of those History channel shows we learned that bottled beer was invented by Anheiser Busch. They first distributed beer in barrels, but bars were watering down the beer and giving them a bad reputation. So bottles allowed them to keep the quality consistent, and it allowed them to have a cleaner product using pasteurization.
Only cans I’ve had recently are all the locals or microbrews/indies – who do their own canning/crowlers – seem to be fine.
If I want more than a 4 pack or specialty thing, I just get a case of bottles.
Modern cans should have liners in them to prevent the metallic taste.
They do and it does.
But it still has the taste of beer.
Proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.
Don’t worry Ted, beer is an acquired taste. My wife never drank any beer until about 6-7 years ago. Mead was her gateway. She’s still stuck on American fruity IPAs, but now she is willing to taste stouts, Pilseners, and plain old lagers.
Yeah, metallic taste was an issue sometimes when microbrews first started showing up in cans (Anderson Valley Hop Ottin, I’m looking at you), but I haven’t run into that problem in years.
Yeah, I’ve never noticed any metal.
I prefer cans because they’re easier to lug around.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who can’t get past the metallic taste. Even when I pour it in a glass, I swear I can taste it. Though I admit that may all be in my head.
Modern cans are better then bottles. You’re not supposed to drink from the can, you’re supposed to pour it into a glass. There’s less breakage, UV exposure, and oxygen exposure in cans versus bottles. On the cost side, cans are cheaper to ship, and fill (at least last time I priced it out). The downside is that a canning line will run more then a bottling line. To remedy this, mobile canning companies have sprung up (and made a killing in the past couple of years).
Laverne and Shirley hardest hit.
Yes but a broken bottle makes for a convenient makeshift weapon.
If you havenβt seen this one you would likely enjoy it. Bring back the corks!

One of the best FM stations in the country is WXRT in Chicago. (Fight me). They play rock/alternative, and will regularly play songs from all the years they’ve been around (since the 60’s). So I regularly hear songs from my high school days, including this Kate Bush song. That being said, I never was a fan of the song π .
and the 80βs dance hottie thing that I am certain you are paying more attention to that what I am presently writing.
Hey! I can pay attention to both!
millennials are incapable of creating culture, so they just borrow it from somewhere else.
We can go ahead and shut down the patent office. Everything has been invented.
Wellβ¦IP is bullshit.

War-gaming the future? Who does that?
Even Exxon Mobil thinks electric vehicles are the future.
The oil giant is predicting that by 2040, every new passenger car sold in the world will be electric, CEO Darren Woods told CNBCβs David Faber in an interview. In 2021, just 9% of all passenger car sales were electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, according to market research company Canalys. That number is up 109% from 2020 says Canalys.
In light of its modeling, Woods said Exxon Mobil is evaluating how the decline in gasoline sales could impact its business. Exxon Mobil is one of the largest publicly traded international gas companies and a leader in the industry. Its website boasts that it is the largest βrefiner and marketer of petroleum products,β as well as a chemicals company.
Woods, who spent a part of his career on the chemical side of the companyβs operations, says chemicals will be key to keeping the company profitable during the clean energy transition. The plastics that Exxon Mobil produces can be used in the manufacturing of electric vehicles.
Petrochemicals will still be in demand? You don’t say. And used internal combustion engined cars will be extremely expensive.
“The plastics that Exxon Mobil produces can be used in the manufacturing of electric vehicles.”
Well, as long as they do it in India, China, or someplace with no environmental laws.
In 2021, just 9% of all passenger car sales were electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, according to market research company Canalys. That number is up 109% from 2020 says Canalys.
How long until 110% of passenger car sales are electric vehicles?
I’m sure they stick a sign in the shop window supporting the regime, too.
Ridiculous.
Its a weird world we live in where Exxon-Mobile wants to virtue signal.
Bush.

NSFW.
I remember those days.
Growing up in the 80s I do too.
I still require a pubic thatch like a boston fern. Something I can lose my truck keys in.
That an actual adult woman. Would we have few pedos and groomers around these days if women didn’t groom themselves to look like prepubescent girls?
Iβll admit I donβt prefer the βsmooth as a turtle shellβ look.
I have a terrible gag reflex, so reducing the chance a hair gets caught n the back of my throat is a good thing.
So youβre saying youβre *not* a cocksucker?
I have wondered the same thing.
Pretty sure the women that go with the prepubescent look do so because they believe thatβs what men want. But I find it creepy.
Takes all kinds, I guess.
In the Arab world, it’s a hygiene thing.
I suppose I should be surprised at this, but for some reason I’m not. Maybe Mex is on to something.
There’s something to be said about the internet breaking local subcultures and making fashion/music/trends spread much faster.
Coming back to the house today I needed to stop at the mailbox. I had some guy in a giant 4×4 diesel pickup hanging on my ass so I made sure to put the left turn signal on a little early to ensure that he saw it. Just as I was starting the turn I saw him in the corner of my eye starting to pass me. On the left. I quickly aborted my turn and he whipped on around, yelling and flipping me off. I guess there are still people who don’t understand the flashy-light thing.
I’m still shaking.
Better cage than bike.
Wasn’t me. I don’t have a pickup.
Wow, that’s messed up. Sounds like the guy was pretty bent about something. Glad it didn’t go worse.
What a dick move. Putting on your blinker to signal him to pass on your left and then you try to cut him off! You should be ashamed.
How is the guy behind to know the difference between, “I’m turning left” and, “It’s okay to pass me on the left.”? Seems like the universal signal for the latter is turning on the right hand signal meaning, “I’m pulling over to the right to give you more room to pass on the left.”
I think your sarcasm detector may be broken.
(slaps sarco-meter)
Figured so but I have seen that “left signal to pass on left” before and never understood it.
So my sarcasm can’t beat the actual stupidity of people, I thought I was making that up. Where is that meteor?
Got a dashcam? I should get one.
What a fricking meat whistler. I donβt always follow the advice myself but often the best thing to do in those situations is smile and wave. Itβs disarming (and sometimes it ends up pissing them off even more).

Seems like they require their patients to be adults. Good for them.
It doesnβt actually say that, you know. As far as I can tell, theyβll chop off a minorβs dick with a consent written in crayon on a Big Chief tablet.
Not clicking.
+1
They created a hole under a dick. It’s surely easier to get used to anal.
At first I thought this was a reply to the bush whacking thread above and was really confused.
Carry on.
I prefer some of the earlier Kate Bush. The Dreaming is my favorite album of hers, with Night of the Swallow favorite song.

Krakens, but a lil small. There’s much larger unripe pods on the plant now.
Gorgeous
One of them ended up in salsa.
Two years ago I made a salsa with habanero, jalapeno, and cayenne. I expected it to be hot (for me sean, not you). First bite, which included peppers, not hot. Second bit, with peppers, not hot. Good flavor, but disappointing heat. Third bite, HOT!!!!! To the point my inner ears HURT!
Really good flavor and the heat settled down. I’ve tried to recreate. Maybe this year.
The other day when mowing I noticed my dogwood’s leaves are turning prematurely yellow.
Urgh.
I’m realizing that I may have to go to war with the chipmunks in my yard. All searches are just finding “humane” ways to deal with them including trap and release, which just passes the problems on to someone else.

I’ll mail you the Beeman. It’s humane and quick.
This works a treat.

Good luck with the Jan 6 sideshow after Roe v Wade circus. I’m sure they’ll be going after those insurrectionists and the ones repeating lies about the case, right?
A mob tried to break into the AZ Capitol last night while the Senate was on session. No word yet on arrests.
I’ll be surprised if there are any arrests.
That mob was pretty tame based on the few videos Andy Ngo put out. Iβll give them a few days to really get going.

Iβm going to compile a list of the stupidest things Biden has said without being challenged by the MSM, and the lung blowout thing is one of them.
I have to set some limits or it will take a lifetime, so I think Iβll stick with things heβs said as VP or President, and cap the list at 15 things.

A very happy day was had.
Ten humans and eleven dogs hiked Prospect mountain, then eight of the humans and ten of the dogs went here for lunch where the staff treated us very well. It was the first time I’ve taken Lily to a restaurant, and she was better behaved than I expected. Not “curl up on the floor under the table and chill out” good, but she didn’t interfere with my meal too much and didn’t embarrass me.
But seriously though, this place takes “dog friendly” to a new level. Not only did they bring out (and refill) water bowls, they brought out two bags of artisan dog treats.
*calls health department*
If you don’t call the health department, you and the GF can use my place as a place to stay if you guys go to the memorial.
The day after it, there’s a pistol shoot at the gun club across the street from me that I’ll be attending. It’s extremely beginner-friendly.
π
Ok, I won’t call.
The two of you are right-handed, correct?
I don’t have any right-handed holsters. I have a 1911A1 clone and plenty of mags, and I can swap the mag release on the Beretta so you both can shoot.
We are.
I don’t know if we’ll be going though. Lots of chaos between now and then.
π
*shrug*
Things happen.
Off to get some takeout bbq.
I am happy to see more and more American restaurants allowing dogs in.
Back in the 90s, I was shocked to see dogs under tables in restaurants in Paris. But they were all very well behaved, so I had to question my βdogs shouldnβt be in a fooood place!!11!β knee-jerk reaction.
The COVID hysteria helped in some sense in that restaurants were forced to become sidewalk shanty towns, and dogs were welcome.
Iβm sure your frequent excursions with Lily, where she got to meet many new dogs, many new people, many new situations, have equipped her well to keep an even keel in all situations.
Youβre a good Doggy Dad.
Around here, dogs are allowed on outdoor patios. When I was in England dogs are allowed in the pub, but not the restaurant.
Same here. Dogs are also allowed in bars/pubs (at the discretion of staff/ownership) that don’t serve food. This has caused some heartbreak for fans of one brewery that recently added a kitchen, so dogs could no longer be allowed inside.
I’d take dogs as more sanitary than some of the people I see in the grocery store and their behaviors.
I go to Facebook for my cross stitch group. I am snoozing people (whom I don’t know why I followed in the first place) (oh, right; I used to be a writer) left and right.
Mr. Mojeaux: “Mostly left.”
Button sewn, shirt fixed, and bath drain dranoed.
Whew, I need a break.
It’s always the little things piling up.
Yup.
I woke up feeling shit. I skipped PorcFest. I have done very little today beyond laundry and watch the other “Barbie and Kendra” movies RJ linked to in last Thursday’s GlibFlick.
Feeling like shit.
So sorry to hear it! Hope it passes ASAP!
Thanks!
Nice save.

Clutch under pressure.
I was just reminiscing the other day in the AM lynx about how much I miss the ’80s and Swissy teased your article. Fantastic, as usual!
I was a Kate Bush fan then and I think it’s fantastic that the Millennials have found her. I saw the first season of ST, but haven’t watched it since. Worth going back?
The second and third seasons are about as good. They hit on a lot of relationship changes as kids grow up. The cGI seemed to get worse as the seasons progressed.
