¡Martes por la tarde, enlaces mexicanos!

Got something pressing this morning, so I’m going to jump right to it.

Rafael Quintero, the infamous drug kingpin with a $20 million bounty for the murder of a DEA agent in 1985…finally captured by Mexican authorities!  He will probably die before he is extradited.

Hahahahahahaha.

But sitting in the Oval Office on Tuesday, President Biden seemed a bit out of practice. During a meeting with Mexico’s Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Biden at turns smirked, grimaced, fidgeted, and took notes as the Mexican president launched into remarks that went on for more than half an hour.

So…Mexico might actually pay for it?

I know how to fix this, but the wrong people might get rich.

At this point, a rock band with a hot chick singing has become cliché.  This may as well be a country song.  I leave it to you to decide if they’re any good.

  2. Count Potato

“Since he took office, there has been a record influx of migrants crossing into the US from its southern border with Mexico, with more than 2.8 million arrests made during his presidency.”

That’s some graph. Also some graft.

    • Count Potato

“President López Obrador in turn called on Mr Biden to allow more migrant workers to enter the US. “It’s essential that we… give certainty to migrants who for years have lived and worked in an honest way in this great nation,” he told Mr Biden. ”

That doesn’t make sense. If they’ve worked here for years, they already entered.

      • R C Dean

He’s asking for an amnesty. He said “honestly”, not “legally”.

      • Count Potato

But how is that calling to allow more migrant workers to enter if they are already here?

      • WTF

It creates an incentive for more illegal entries.

      • Count Potato

        “Allow” would mean legal entries.

It’s not a quote though. So it could be a non-sequitur from the writer — that he asked for both separately.

    • juris imprudent

Pretty sure those aren’t Mexicans either making that border crossing – funny how harsh Mexico is on THEIR Southern border (unless they are assured we’re just passing through).

    • hayeksplosives

If he means “migrant” literally, then he’s talking about people who come up and work during crop planting, growing, and harvesting (or just harvesting) and then return to Mexico in the off-season. They are true migrant workers.

If they move in and stay, they are immigrants.

One thing I don’t get about rock videos — what’s with all the abandoned warehouses with chains just hanging from the ceiling for no reason? Weird….

    • Compelled Speechless

Seems weird to say, but this style of music video (as in lifted directly out of the 80s) actually benefitted from the low-res graininess of old CRT TV’s. Seeing this in HD kills the mystique and just makes it look corny as hell.

      • Lord Humungus

Watching an old episode of Kojak – he enters a dirty magazine store to question someone; and, thanks to DVD and upsampling, etc, you can clearly see all the magazine covers and nudity.

“While we’re waiting for prices or gasoline to go down in the United States,” López Obrador said at one point, “we have decided that it was necessary for us to allow Americans who live close to the border … to go and get their gasoline on the Mexican side at lower prices.”

    Zing!

    Wait… wasn’t this always allowed?

    • grrizzly

Biden also touted cooperation between the two nations on targeting drugs — specifically fentanyl — as well as on tackling the root causes that lead people to migrate from Central and South America to Mexico and the United States.

Promising free shit and having an open border probably didn’t come up.

    • SDF-7

Seems to me that somewhere ought to really ban abortion just so these LARP’ers can incorporate a bit of reality into their play.

King Walz is running around trying to convince us Minnesodans that he is the only thing stopping the evil GOP patriarchy from snatching away abortions.

Democrats in recent weeks have raised the possibility of a statewide referendum in 2024 on abortion, saying Republicans are likely to try such a maneuver if they control the Minnesota House and Senate after the fall elections.
“An anti-choice governor like Scott Jensen could use the platform to advocate for and manipulate the additional constitutional amendment to ban abortion in all circumstances,” Walz said during a June news conference, referring to his presumptive Republican opponent in the governor’s race.

Prominent Republicans have not talked this year about a constitutional amendment to restrict abortion. Jensen, in fact, told MPR News last week he wouldn’t push a vote on one if elected.

I think most GOPers have figured out that a total ban is a losing issue. Not that the Dems aren’t desperately trying to pretend that the GOP is hell bent on it.

About 35 years ago, a metalworker friend made me a one-hitter out of a 3″ piece of copper tubing (quarter-inch I think) and a 90 degree brass fitting. The kind of stuff used in hydraulics and such. Works like a charm.

    Nein wood for you.

As natural gas and oil for heating skyrockets, many Germans are now turning to firewood as a way to keep warm this coming winter. But now firewood is getting rare too, and prices are skyrocketing. The German online Merkur reports of “exploding demand”.

According to firewood dealer Konrad Kötterl. “Some people are panicking about not being able to get any more wood.” As a result, they’re stockpiling. Normally, he has three to four orders a day in the summer. “Right now, it’s 20 to 30.”

Personally, I called a local firewood dealer earlier in the week. They told me they have none left and that they could put me down on a waiting list.

    • The Other Kevin

For a high school project I interviewed my uncle about his experience in the Great Depression. He said they used to break up a box car and use it for firewood. Maybe they can do the same to Klaus Schwab’s private jet.

I know Nuke plants take time to get back online, but couldn’t these idiots starting working on that right now? They turned 4 of them off earlier this year right? Even if it takes 4 months, the nuke plants would be back online by mid-November. Are the pols in Germany this fucking stupid?

So my local is doing hot dog specials for the All-Star Game tonight. I heartily approve, and suggested these additions for next year:

Gigante (Houston) – w/chili, cheese, chopped pickled jalapenos
Mr. Tiger (Detroit) – w/chili, mustard, chopped onion
The Kid (Seattle) – split dog on grilled bun w/ cream cheese and grilled onion

What regional / stadium special hot dogs do you guys like? Looking forward to a frank discussion.

I remember this issue coming up in Con Law. Technically, it’s an open question whether a treaty can supersede the Constitution.

This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding

      • Compelled Speechless

That’s horrifying. I’m frankly shocked that this little loophole doesn’t get exploited more often.

      • Don escaped Texas

        IANAL

I think the catch is that most treaties aren’t treaties: they aren’t ratified by 2/3 of the Senate. There are executive orders, congressional proclamations, and even duly-passed bills signed into law on simple majority that are spoken of in the tone of treaty that aren’t treaty.

How a treaty works example: consider all the migratory bird treaties (with the UK and Mexico and cetera). Arkansas can’t create a season or limit or allow harvesting techniques that are forbidden by those treaties even if federal law were otherwise silent. The treaties are supreme the same way federal laws are.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

The open question is whether an international treaty (duly entered into by the US) that, say, forbade online hate speech or banned civilian ownership of semiautomatic firearms would be trumped by the 1A or 2A respectively.

      • Don escaped Texas

        of course: twas understood

there’s inconsistency in the constitution without looking to treaty: 9A and 10A are so vague that the people can claim rights that the states insist they can regulate with their powers; immovable rock and irresistible force

hell, I’m sure there were several FF who were part of writing and ratifying the Aliens and Sedition Act

people are messy: telling other people what they can’t do is walking tightrope

      • juris imprudent

Holmes of course for the court.

It is said that a treaty cannot be valid if it infringes the Constitution, that there are limits, therefore, to the treaty-making power, and that one such limit is that what an act of Congress could not do unaided, in derogation of the powers reserved to the States, a treaty cannot do. An earlier act of Congress that attempted by itself and not in pursuance of a treaty to regulate the killing of migratory birds within the States had been held bad in the District Court. United States v. Shauver, 214 Fed.Rep. 154. United States v. McCullagh, 221 Fed.Rep. 288. Those decisions were supported by arguments that migratory birds were owned by the States in their sovereign capacity for the benefit of their people, and that, under cases like Geer v. Connecticut, 161 U. S. 519, this control was one that Congress had no power to displace. The same argument is supposed to apply now with equal force.

Which Holmes immediately and trivially decides isn’t relevant. The man had a unique capacity to insult the Founder’s structures.

      • juris imprudent

The upshot being Congress was granted the power to act BY THE TREATY, whereas previously it had no power to do so. Fucking OWHIII.

Silver Line Needs Additional $250M For Completion, Airports Authority Says

The project is an 11.5 mile extension from Wiehle-Reston East station to Ashburn with six new stations, including Washington Dulles International Airport. The current budget for the second phase of Silver Line construction is about $2.8 billion. If approved, additional funding would push it to more than $3 billion.
Originally, the Silver Line was expected to be completed in 2016.

Any suggestions for a good wireless headset for work from home?

    • mexican sharpshooter

I use Bose, and while they’re pricey they do allow me to get up and take a piss during meetings.

    • Rat on a train

I have a Steelseries Arctis 9. The sound is so much better than my old wired headset and way better than the wired headset corporate issued. The wireless range is decent. I can go from the basement office up to the kitchen only losing connection on the stairs (2.4 doesn’t go through concrete and clay so well). The adjustable and retractable microphone is nice. The volume and mute on the headset are easy to feel while wearing. The driver automatically reverts to speakers when the headset goes to sleep. I wish it had wireless charging, but I only plug it in at the end of the day.

    • trshmnstr the terrible

I like the over-the-ear headsets, so I have a wired Jabra Evolve 80.

Theres a couple wireless alternatives from Jabra (Evolve2 85, and I can’t remember the other), but they’re expensive new. I paid much less grabbing a used one off eBay.

      • hayeksplosives

I have the same Jabra. It’s good, but I would like the option of being untethered. However my workplace won’t permit wireless accessories (mouse, keyboard, headset).

      • db

Yeah, dying at work is really bad, but dying at work of autoasphyxiation is worse.

      • kinnath

Not exactly the concern. I get the wire wrapped around the arm of the chair. Then, when I push back, I pull headset off the table when I am not wearing. And one time, I pulled my laptop halfway across the table before I figure out I was caught on my chair. Fuck wires.

      • db

got it; just messing with you

    Hello!

Alive and well. The annual Peru, IN circus is this week. It’s been a good time. I have prep that I can do, and am in my own way, but I really just have to wait until mid August before my work officially begins. Still much to juggle, but I’m quietly confident. I’m expecting the road bumps that I know are hiding for now.

Dad had a relatively minor urological surgery today. He was done in an hour. Has been (understandably) complaining for week. Now he has to put in the catheter again for weeeeeks….uuuuuuuugh….he asked for more pain pills of mine. I told him I would but I’m out. My dad is a huuuuuge anti-drug guy. You know the kind of drugs. But I offered an edible…and he accepted. Told him what was what and gave him a 2.5mg gummy.

He went out for a walk…and he’s still out…this is marvelous. If what I think is happening really is, and I’m fairly confident, then this is a fantastic development. I hope it worked the way that we all know it does.

    • Ted S.

If what I think is happening really is, and I’m fairly confident, then this is a fantastic development.

      He’s seeing a hooker?

      • Evan from Evansville

I think he’s getting high for possibly the first time ever….Mom says that he tried once or something but I’m guessing bullshit. He HATES drugs, but he especially hates smoking cuz of his parents.

His walk has been at least an hour now. Before this new treatment strategy, this has not been in any realm possible. This might be revelatory for him and us.

      • db

“I learned from you, all right?!? I LEARNED IT FROM WATCHING YOU, SON!”

      • Evan from Evansville

Ho hum. Well. He was out walking for quite a while. Now he’s back and hasn’t said anything. But he hasn’t complained about anything either. Seems like he does feel much better. His commentary during the All Star game is a bit more cheerful and lively than normal. Nothing too extreme, just like the dosage prescribed, but a noticeably upward tic in his spirit.

        Dr Evan…flies again.
